1. Under laboratory conditions Limulus from 20 to 60 mm. in diameter are positively phototropic, and execute circus movements towards the normal side, when the median and the opposite lateral eyes are removed or covered. 2. The phototropism of Limulus may be modified or obliterated by (a) fright, (b) hunger, (c) stereotropism, (d) photokinesis, and (e) unknown stimuli. 3. Quantitative measurements of the paths of animals doing circus movements demonstrate that the amount of turning varies directly with the light intensity as follows: for 8,000 candle meters the degrees turned per centimeter were 6.73; for 2,000 candle meters, 5.23; and for 900 candle meters, 4.78. In other words, the diameter of the circle varies inversely with the light intensity. 4. The rate of locomotion per minute also varies directly with the light intensity, being 178 cm. for 8,000 candle meters, 167 for 2,000, and 157 for 900. 5. These reactions are satisfactorily explained by the tropism theory.  相似文献

1. The theory of animal phototropism requires for particular instances a knowledge of the action of light as exerted through each of two bilaterally located receptors functioning singly. The measurement of "circus movements" which this involves must be concerned with such aspects of the reaction as are demonstrably dependent upon the effect of light. 2. The negatively phototropic slug Limax maximus exhibits very definite and continuous circus movement under vertical illumination when one eye-tentacle has been removed. The amplitude of the circling movement, measured in degrees deflection per cm. of path as an index of maintained differential tonus, is intimately related to the concurrent velocity of creeping. Analysis of the orienting mechanism is facilitated by the fact that in gasteropods such as Limax the animal creeps by means of the pedal organ, but orients (turns) by a totally distinct set of muscles in the dorsal and lateral regions of the body wall. 3. The expression of the phototropic orienting tendency, with illumination constant, is greatly influenced by the temperature. Above a zone centering at 15°, the amplitude of turning (degrees per cm. of path) is determined by the temperature in accurate agreement with Arrhenius'' equation for chemical reaction velocity, with the critical increment µ = 16,820; and the rate of creeping is progressively less as the temperature rises, µ for its reciprocal being 10,900. Below 15°, the velocity of creeping becomes less the the lower the temperature, µ being again 16,800; while the amplitude of orientation is limited merely by the velocity of creeping, its reciprocal being directly proportional thereto. 4. Measurements of Limax circus movements in terms of turning deflection as function of light intensity must therefore be carried out at a temperature well above 15°. 5. The analysis provides a gross physical model of how an end-result may be influenced by temperature according to the effect of temperature upon each of several interconnected processes when the "temperature vs. effect" curves for these processes dynamically intersect. 6. It is pointed out that a certain type of unpredictability (quantative variability) in animal behavior under "normal" natural conditions probably results from dynamic equilibrium there obtaining between diverse mechanisms competing for effector control (in the present case, the creeping mechanism and that for turning, in the range 14–16°C.). It follows that the unraveling of the elements of conduct necessitates experimentation under diverse abnormal conditions favoring individual mechanism of response.  相似文献

What is the relationship between film viewers’ eye movements and their film comprehension? Typical Hollywood movies induce strong attentional synchrony—most viewers look at the same things at the same time. Thus, we asked whether film viewers’ eye movements would differ based on their understanding—the mental model hypothesis—or whether any such differences would be overwhelmed by viewers’ attentional synchrony—the tyranny of film hypothesis. To investigate this question, we manipulated the presence/absence of prior film context and measured resulting differences in film comprehension and eye movements. Viewers watched a 12-second James Bond movie clip, ending just as a critical predictive inference should be drawn that Bond’s nemesis, “Jaws,” would fall from the sky onto a circus tent. The No-context condition saw only the 12-second clip, but the Context condition also saw the preceding 2.5 minutes of the movie before seeing the critical 12-second portion. Importantly, the Context condition viewers were more likely to draw the critical inference and were more likely to perceive coherence across the entire 6 shot sequence (as shown by event segmentation), indicating greater comprehension. Viewers’ eye movements showed strong attentional synchrony in both conditions as compared to a chance level baseline, but smaller differences between conditions. Specifically, the Context condition viewers showed slightly, but significantly, greater attentional synchrony and lower cognitive load (as shown by fixation probability) during the critical first circus tent shot. Thus, overall, the results were more consistent with the tyranny of film hypothesis than the mental model hypothesis. These results suggest the need for a theory that encompasses processes from the perception to the comprehension of film.  相似文献

Circus movements, which involve the circumferential rotation of a hyaline cytoplasmic protrusion, occur in cells obtained by EDTA dissociation of gastrula-stage Xenopus laevis embryos. Only a few dissociated blastula-stage cells show circus movements, more early gastrula-stage cells show them, and nearly all late gastrula-stage cells show them. Circus movements cease in cells prior to mitosis and begin again in daughter cells after mitosis is completed. In early gastrulae, only 17% of prospective endodermal cells show circus movements while 79% of prospective mesodern, archenteric roof, and posterior neural ectoderm do so. Isolated cells as well as groups of cells in vitro are often propelled by circus movements. There is an obvious antagonism between cell contact and circus movements. The morphogenetic significance of circus movements and blebbing locomotion is discussed.  相似文献

Males of Periplaneta americana respond to the sex pheromone secreted by females with increased locomotion and positive chemo-orientation. Both sexes orient toward aggregation pheromone without an increase in locomotion. Immediately following removal of one antenna males exhibit ‘circus’ movements, but after 2 days orient toward pheromones; a bi-modal mechanism of chemo-orientation is proposed. Cockroaches turn away from air currents, but orient toward air currents carrying sex or aggregation pheromone, suggesting the possibility of up-wind orientation. Antennae deflect upward and outward when pheromone is first perceived; the head then moves toward the pheromone source. Following removal of one antenna, the pattern of head and antennal movement changes in a manner which enhances the sweeping of the intact antenna.  相似文献

Despite their often physical connection, neighbouring stormwater drains and urban streams are typically managed quite differently; with drains mostly regarded as poor fish habitat. The goal of this study was to evaluate the interconnectedness of an urban stream (Watts Creek) and adjoining earthen surface stormwater drain (Kizell Drain) from the perspective of fish residency and movements over an entire year. Using a stationary passive integrated transponder (PIT) array, we quantified and compared the direction of movements among Watts Creek, Kizell Drain, and the area downstream of their confluence (herein termed Main) for four common stream fishes. We also determined the residency time (percentage of total time in days) within each of these reaches by combining data from the array and recaptured (with electrofishing and identified with hand-held PIT reader) or portably detected (with mobile PIT reader) fish. While the movements of creek chub (Semotilus atromaculatus) and central mudminnow (Umbra limi) varied across seasons, creek chub resided significantly longer in Watts, while central mudminnow spent more time in Kizell and Main. Longnose dace (Rhinichthys cataractae) moved into and resided most often within Watts. The movements and residency time for white sucker (Catostomus commersonii) did not vary among the reaches. We conclude there is a high degree of connectivity between Watts Creek and Kizell Drain and that, with the exception of longnose dace, the three other species utilize the habitat available in Kizell. This study demonstrates the biological potential of earthen stormwater drains and as a result we recommend these systems be managed as a functional component of urban watersheds.  相似文献

The axostyles of the flagellates Oxymonas, Saccinobaculus, and Notila are large ribbon-shaped structures which undulate actively in the cytoplasm. The form of their movements is described and illustrated. Axostyles consist of regular arrays of longitudinal fibres, the number of which varies between 100 and 5000 in different species. The fibres are about 240 A in diameter, apparently hollow, regularly cross-banded with a periodicity of about 150 A, and connected by delicate cross-links, also at regular intervals of about 150 A. They resemble very closely the central fibres of cilia and flagella. No other structural components are present, except at the anterior end, where the fibres are attached to one or more basal bodies, and at the posterior tip, where they are anchored to the plasma membrane. The relevance of the findings to an understanding of the mechanism of ciliary and flagellar movements is discussed.  相似文献

Comparison of the locomotor behaviour of normal, unilaterally and bilaterally blinded goldfish (Carassius auratus) demonstrated the roles of perspective vision (depth perception), which requires binocular vision, and of vision provided by only one eye, in the control of locomotion. Because normal and bilaterally blinded fish exhibited similar size and direction of angles of turn, a similar number of consecutive turns in the same direction and the same turning frequency, normal, binocular vision plays no role in the control of turning behaviour. Unilaterally blinded fish exhibited a strong bias in turning behaviour which resulted in their displaying circus movements toward the blinded side, a direction opposite to that reported by others for both invertebrates and vertebrates with unilateral sensory elimination. The mean step length was significantly increased by both uni- and bilateral blinding, and its temporal relationship with turning frequency and distance swum was also changed. Perspective vision (binocular) therefore controls these parameters. The significantly lower velocity of bilaterally blinded fish and the similarity between the other two test groups, indicated that sight by one eye only was sufficient to mediate velocity control.  相似文献

1. Stimulation causes Antedon to swim by means of alternate oral bending and dorsal stroke of the arms. Two arms of a given ray move alternately so that while one is executing the aboral stroke its mate is flexing ventrally. This implies reciprocal inhibition. 2. Recriprocal inhibition between the two arms of an isolated ray can be abolished by the use of either strychnine or nicotine. 3. Coordination between the rays is referable to the conducting properties of the nervous pentagon which connects the five rays. In this system an impulse loses in effectiveness as it passes from the point of origin. 4. When Antedon is made to rest oral face down on the floor of an aquarium, oral flexion of all the rays, swimming movements, and righting result. Antedon is therefore negatively stereotropic with reference to its ventral side. 5. Excitation of the dorsal cirri results in aboral bending of all the rays. Stimulation of the cirri inhibits ventral flexion to the extent of preventing righting movements while on the other hand stimulation of the ventral surface inhibits the grasp reflex of the cirri. Thus oral and aboral sides of Antedon exhibit dynamic symmetry although structurally dissimilar.  相似文献

1. The negative phototropism of certain land isopods was investigated over a large range of intensities, especially low ones. The responses were determined quantitatively by measuring the angle through which an animal turned away from a line perpendicular to the rays of light. 2. In the absence of light the undirected movements set up by obscure stimuli were such as to compensate each other statistically, the average path being a movement in the direction in which the animal was headed. 3. Over a large range of intensities (0.0026 m.c. up) the average turning is maximal, about 55° (Oniscus). This maximal response is due to an anatomical peculiarity, in that the carapace cuts off the light on the eye after the animal has turned 50–60°. This peculiarity probably accounts for specific differences among land isopods. Any light, therefore, which is strong enough to turn an animal through this maximal angle in a radial distance of 10 cm. will give results whose mean will be maximal. 4. Below 0.0026 m.c. the amount of angular deflection becomes less and less, in proportion to the logarithm of the intensity, until at 0.00003 m.c. the movements are the same as in darkness. 5. This proportionality between amount of turning and the logarithm of the intensity indicates the photochemical nature of phototropism on the basis of Hecht''s work with Mya. The spermatozoon of the mealybug Pseudococcus obscurus Essig is a filamentous cell (0.25 µ by 300 µ) which exhibits three-dimensional flagellations throughout most of its length. It has microtubules (200 A diameter) and a threadlike nuclear core (0.07–0.09 µ diameter) which extend almost its entire length, but apparently it has no mitochondria, centrioles, typical flagellum, or acrosome. The microtubules are arranged in two and a half concentric rings and total 56 in the most actively motile region but form two or three concentric rings with totals of 28 or 56 tubules, respectively, in less active regions. The relation of unusual microtubular patterns to the 9 + 2 complex and to flagellar motion is discussed. Mealybug spermatozoa are transmitted to the female in motile bundles which are approximately 1.3 µ by 750 µ and have four regions: (1) an anterior corkscrew region; (2) a region which contains approximately 16 spermatozoa; (3) a region of amorphous content; and (4) an endpiece. Bundle motility originates from the synchronous movements of its spermatozoa which appear to be arranged in two concentric multistranded helices. The spermatozoa provide both forward and gyratory motions of the bundle, and the corkscrew complements bundle propulsion by converting part of the rotation into forward movement.  相似文献

The rhythm of abdominal respiratory movements in various insects, aquatic and terrestrial, is shown to possess critical increments 11,500± or 16,500± calories (Libellula, Dixippus, Anax). These are characteristic of processes involved in respiration, and definitely differ from the increment 12,200 calories which is found in a number of instances of (non-respiratory) rhythmic neuromuscular activities of insects and other arthropods. With grasshoppers (Melanoplus), normal or freshly decapitated, the critical increment is 7,900, again a value encountered in connection with some phenomena of gaseous exchange and agreeing well with the value obtained for CO2 output in Melanoplus. It is shown that by decapitation the temperature characteristic for abdominal rhythm, in Melanoplus, is changed to 16,500, then to 11,300—depending upon the time since decapitation; intermediate values do not appear. The frequency of the respiratory movements seems to be controlled by a metabolically distinct group of neurones. The bearing of these results upon the theory of functional analysis by means of temperature characteristics is discussed, and it is pointed out that a definite standpoint becomes available from which to attempt the specific control of vital processes.  相似文献

The vacuolar protein sorting (Vps) pathway, in which Vps4 class I AAA-ATPases play a central role, regulates growth factor receptors, immune response, and developmental signaling, and participates in tumor suppression, apoptosis, and retrovirus budding. We present the first atomic structure of the nucleotide-free yeast His6ΔNVps4p dimer and its AMPPNP (5′-adenylyl-β,γ-imidodiphosphate)-bound tetradecamer, derived from a cryo electron microscopy map. Vps4p dimers form two distinct heptameric rings and accommodate AAA cassettes in a head-to-head—not in a head-to-tail—fashion as in class II AAA-ATPases. Our model suggests a mechanism for disassembling ESCRT (endosomal sorting complex required for transport) complexes by movements of substrate-binding domains located at the periphery of the tetradecamer during ATP hydrolysis in one ring, followed by translocation through the central pore and ATP hydrolysis in the second ring.  相似文献

I propose that the enigmatic leaflet movements in elliptical circles every few minutes of the Indian telegraph (semaphore) plant Desmodium motorium ( = D. gyrans = Hedysarum gyrans = Codariocalyx motorius), which has intrigued scientists for centuries, is a new type of butterfly or general winged arthropod mimicry by this plant. Such leaflet movement may deceive a passing butterfly searching for an un-occupied site suitable to deposit its eggs, that the plant is already occupied. It may also attract insectivorous birds, reptiles or arthropods to the plant because it looks as if it is harboring a potential prey and while they patrol there, they can find insects or other invertebrates that indeed attack the plant. The possibility that diurnal mammalian herbivores may also be deterred by these movements should not be dismissed.  相似文献

Chromosome velocity has been studied in living Melanoplus differentialis spermatocytes by phase contrast cinemicrography. Melanoplus chromosomes (and bivalents) differ in length by as much as 1:3.5. As expected, no size-dependent velocity differences were detected in anaphase, and this is also shown to be true for the less predictable movements during prometaphase congression. The size of the X chromosome can change during observation following x-irradiation, but this is equally without influence on velocity. However, an effect of position on velocity is found in both prometaphase and in anaphase: the chromosomes furthest from the central interpolar axis move 25 per cent faster than more central chromosomes. A simple mechanical model relating frictional resistance and mitotic forces to chromosome velocity is discussed in detail. Calculations from the model suggest that a significant difference in the force acting on a large, as compared with a small chromosome is necessary to account for the observed similarity in velocity. Therefore, it is concluded that the mitotic forces are so organized or regulated that velocity is, within limits, independent of load. The implications of velocity-load independence in relation to the molecular origin of mitotic forces are discussed.  相似文献
