Clonal propagation is an important life history trait for many sessile organisms, and often leads to the formation of monoclonal aggregations. In the marine environment, sea anemones have been model species for testing theory regarding the evolution of sex and understanding the contribution of sexual versus asexual reproduction to the population structure in facultatively clonal animals. However, little attention has been paid to tropical actiniarians. The corkscrew anemone Bartholomea annulata is common in tropical marine habitats in the western Atlantic and Caribbean; it forms small aggregations (2–4 anemones) on coral reefs and larger aggregations (>10 anemones) in mangrove habitats. We used field surveys and molecular analyses to investigate patterns of distribution, abundance, and genetic structure of aggregations formed by B. annulata on a reef in the US Virgin Islands and in a unique mangrove habitat in the Florida Keys. Abundance was greatest at the abandoned rock quarry mangrove habitat in the Florida Keys, where anemones formed continuously distributed aggregations carpeting the exposed limestone walls. Genetic diversity assessed via intersimple sequence repeats (ISSRs) and six microsatellite loci revealed that asexual reproduction plays only a minor role in the formation of both small and large anemone aggregations. Specifically, ISSR analyses showed that only ~10% of anemone aggregations were clonal in the US Virgin Islands, while microsatellite genotyping identified clonality in only 1 of 35 aggregations. In the Florida Keys, only four clonal genotypes were recovered within aggregations, but eight clones, representing 33% of the total surveyed population, had individuals in multiple aggregations. Thus, population structure of B. annulata appears to rely primarily on sexual reproduction, although asexual reproduction may play a nontrivial role in some environments. Mechanisms that drive the formation of genotypically diverse aggregations remain unknown, but may include attraction toward conspecifics, shared use of preferred habitats, or the local retention of larvae in partially enclosed habitats.  相似文献

Regeneration in polychaetes is an important process because of its role in recovery after injury and in asexual reproduction via architomy. This study examined architomy and regeneration in the spionid worm, Polydora colonia (Moore 1907) a symbiont of sponges. Based on collections of P. colonia from Long Island, New York, prevalence of architomy was 24% (188 out of 780 worms) with the highest prevalence recorded during the summer and early fall and the lowest prevalence during late fall and winter. Morphogenesis during regeneration of P. colonia was studied with light and scanning electron microscopy at two different temperatures. Worms regenerated faster under high temperatures (24°C), whereas it took more than twice as long to regenerate under low temperatures (14°C). Morphogenesis during anterior regeneration included the formation of a blastema from which a maximum of eight anterior segments regenerated. At high temperatures, palp buds and initial segments were observed to form by day 2 and 1–2 major spines were observed in the fifth segment by day 8. This is the first report of asexual reproduction in the field for the genus Polydora and the results indicate that temperature plays a role in regeneration.  相似文献

This study attempts to predict and verify possible spawning aggregation sites and times in the Los Roques Archipelago National Park, Venezuela, based on physical reef characteristics and the knowledge of experienced local fishermen. Three possible aggregation sites were selected for monitoring based on satellite images, low‐cost bathymetric mapping and interviews with experienced local fishermen. Abundances and sizes of 18 species that are known to form reproductive aggregations were monitored at these sites using underwater visual census for 7 days after each full moon from February to August, 2007. While spawning events were not observed, possible indirect evidence of spawning aggregations was found for Lutjanus analis at Cayo Sal and Boca de Sebastopol, Lutjanus apodus at Cayo Sal, Lutjanus cyanopterus at Cayo Sal and Piedra La Guasa and Epinephelus guttatus at Bajo California and Cayo de Agua. Additionally, indirect evidence was identified for the past existence of a spawning aggregation of Epinephelus striatus in the northern part of the archipelago, which may have been eliminated by overfishing c.15 years ago. Bathymetric mapping showed that the shelf edge at sites monitored in this study was shallower than at spawning aggregation sites in other parts of the Caribbean, and that sites were not proximal to deep water. While this study does not prove the existence or locations of spawning aggregations of reef fishes in the archipelago, it does add insight to a growing understanding of generalities in the relationship between seafloor characteristics and the locations of transient reef‐fish spawning aggregations in the Caribbean.  相似文献

Numerous studies demonstrate how sessile marine organisms utilize chemical, structural, and nutritional deterrents to persist in predator-rich environments. Little is known, however, about how mobile, more behaviorally complex species minimize predation by integrating avoidance and deterrence strategies. We investigated this using sabellid polychaete worms from the Caribbean and temperate western Atlantic. Sabellids extend their feather-like radioles beyond their protective tubes for feeding and respiration; the body remains inside the tube and the radioles retract when threatened. We used co-occurring consumers to determine the palatability of radioles and bodies for each of the eight species tested. In addition, we examined chemical or structural traits affecting palatability and evaluated predator escape traits, such as tube strength, speed of radiole retraction, completeness of retraction, and sensitivity to a nearby disturbance. All species had unpalatable radioles that were chemically or structurally defended, but only two species had unpalatable bodies. Thus, most species allocated defenses to tissues that were most exposed to predation. The two species with chemically defended bodies, Bispira brunnea and Bispira variegata, relied less on behavioral escapes than the other species. Their tubes were weak, they did not retract until disturbances were very close, and B. brunnea retracted slowly and incompletely even when touched. Other species generally had stronger tubes and/or retracted when disturbances were farther away. This trade-off of deterrence versus escape even occurred within a single species when populations differed in palatability. Populations of B.variegata from North Carolina and Georgia were chemically deterrent to both temperate and tropical consumers, while populations from Panama and Florida were palatable. The more palatable Panama population retracted in response to distant movement, while the unpalatable North Carolina population did not retract until nearly touched. Thus, most species utilize a combination of predator avoidance and deterrence strategies, but more deterrent populations of species utilized avoidance less.  相似文献

Coral reef restoration aims to help threatened coral ecosystems recover from recent severe declines. Here we address whether coral fragments should be out‐planted individually or in larger aggregations. Theory suggests alternative possible outcomes: whereas out‐plants within aggregations might suffer from heightened negative interactions with neighbors (e.g. competition for space), they may alternatively benefit from positive interactions with neighbors (e.g. buffering wave disturbances). On a degraded reef in the Caribbean (St. Croix, USVI), using out‐plants of the critically endangered staghorn coral Acropora cervicornis, we experimentally tested how aggregation density (1–20 out‐planted coral fragments spaced at approximately 5 cm) influenced initial coral growth (over 3 months). Coral growth declined as a function of aggregation size, and out‐plants within larger aggregations had fewer and shorter secondary branches on average, indicative of horizontal competition for space. Our results therefore suggest that wide spacing of individuals will maximize the initial growth of out‐planted branching corals.  相似文献

This study compares the sperm morphology of 2 hermaphroditic (Diploria strigosa, Montastrea annularis) and 2 gonochoric (Siderastrea siderea, Dendrogyra cylindrus) Caribbean reef corals. The spermatozoa of the gonochoric species are morphologically more specialized than those of the hermaphrodites. The cytological differences are apparent in the formation of a Spitzenkörper and pro-acrosomal vesicles, a mitochondrial mass (Nebenkern) and a large lipid vesicle in the gonochorists studied. Harrison (1985) first demonstrated that sperm morphology is correlated with sexual reproductive pattern and systematic position in scleractinian corals, and this is supported by the results of this study. The possible functional and phylogenetic bases of sperm morphology are discussed and a brief outline is given of further studies required.  相似文献

The tube-dwelling polychaete Pseudopotamilla reniformis (Sabellidae) forms dense and complex aggregations of flexible tubes on hard substrates in the subtidal zone of the White Sea. No sexual reproduction was observed in this study and recruitment appeared to be due to asexual reproduction by architomy in winter, from October to March. The posterior part of the abdomen undergoes spontaneous fission into from 2 to 4 fragments and depending on their position, the fragments regenerate their anterior ends or both anterior and posterior ends. Regeneration in P. reniformis takes place via a combination of epimorphosis (replacement of missing parts by cell proliferation and the growth of new tissue) and morphallaxis (the remodelling of pre-existing structures without cell proliferation). The morphogenetic events during regenerative restoration include de novo formation of branchial crown, formation of thoracic segments and restoration of the posterior end. Asexual reproduction appears to play a crucial role for formation of P. reniformis aggregations and is very important for the population in the White Sea, at the margin of the species’ range.  相似文献

Observations of moray eel (Muraenidae) distribution made on a Caribbean coral reef are discussed in the context of long term population trends. Observations of eel distribution made using SCUBA during 1978, 1979–1980, and 1984 are compared and related to the occurrence of a hurricane in 1979. An estimate of the mean standing stock of moray eels is presented. The degree of site attachment is discussed for spotted morays (Gymnothorax moringa) and goldentail morays (Muraena miliaris). The repeated non-aggressive association of moray eels with large aggregations of potential prey fishes is detailed.  相似文献

Early gonadal development of the protogynous epinepheline, Cephalopholis boenak, was examined histologically in 289 specimens with standard length (LS) of 42–130 mm, collected from May 2000 to April 2002 in Hong Kong waters, to determine male developmental pathways and establish its sexual pattern. All juvenile gonads developed an ovarian lumen with primary‐growth stage oocytes and scattered spermatogenic tissue prior to sexual differentiation and first sexual maturation. From this bisexual phase containing both female and male tissues, some gonads differentiated as ovaries with further oocyte growth to cortical‐alveolus and vitellogenic stages, the rest differentiated as testes with the proliferation of spermatogenic tissue and the formation of a sperm sinus. All testes retained the lumen and primary‐growth stage oocytes, and sperm sinuses ran within the gonad wall. Unlike most protogynous species, among functional males it was impossible to distinguish those resulting from juveniles through sexual differentiation (i.e. primary male) from those resulting from functional females through sex change (i.e. secondary male) based solely on testicular morphology. A proportion‐spermatogenic‐tissue index (IST) was, therefore, developed and determined to be a reliable quantitative indicator for distinguishing differentiating, primary males before a sperm sinus was evident, from differentiating females during sexual differentiation. Since sexually transitional specimens with the concominant appearance of degenerating vitellogenic, or later, stage oocytes and spermatogenic tissue in the gonads were previously noted from Hong Kong, diandric, protogynous hermaphroditism is confirmed in C. boenak. For species, such as this and other epinephelines, in which all males have the same testicular morphology, a complete analysis of a wide range of body sizes from juveniles to adults is necessary for understanding male developmental pathways, and determining sexual pattern.  相似文献

Spawning aggregations of red hind Epinephelus guttatus, tiger grouper Mycteroperca tigris and yellowfin grouper Mycteroperca venenosa were identified at two coral‐reef systems: Arrecife Alacranes (emergent bank reef) and Bajos del Norte (submerged bank reef) on the continental shelf of the Yucatan Peninsula (Campeche Bank), Mexico. At both reefs, E. guttatus forms large spawning aggregations between February and March. At Bajos del Norte, M. tigris reproduces in a small, low‐density aggregation in May, while M. venenosa aggregates at high densities for spawning between March and May. Multi‐species use of an aggregation site by E. guttatus and M. venenosa was observed at Bajos del Norte. The identified spawning aggregations are apparently stable in location over time, and all three species were commonly observed to spawn within 1 week following the full moon. Development and survival of the larvae spawned in these aggregations are probably aided by a seasonal (spring–summer) upwelling in the north‐east Campeche Bank. A permanent area closure at Bajos del Norte, currently outside any specific fisheries management area or regulations, would provide protection needed for the spawning aggregations of these three species.  相似文献

Dispersal is a critical process for the persistence and productivity of marine populations. For many reef species, there is increasing evidence that local demography and self‐recruitment have major consequences on their genetic diversity and adaptation to environmental change. Yet empirical data of dispersal patterns in reef‐building species remain scarce. Here, we document the first genetic estimates of self‐recruitment and dispersal distances in a free‐spawning marine invertebrate, the hydrocoral Millepora cf. platyphylla. Using twelve microsatellite markers, we gathered genotypic information from 3,160 georeferenced colonies collected over 27,000 m2 of a single reef in three adjacent habitats in Moorea, French Polynesia; the mid slope, upper slope, and back reef. Although the adult population was predominantly clonal (85% were clones), our parentage analysis revealed a moderate self‐recruitment rate with a minimum of 8% of sexual propagules produced locally. Assigned offspring often settled at <10 m from their parents and dispersal events decrease with increasing geographic distance. There were no discrepancies between the dispersal distances of offspring assigned to parents belonging to clonal versus nonclonal genotypes. Interhabitat dispersal events via cross‐reef transport were also detected for sexual and asexual propagules. Sibship analysis showed that full siblings recruit nearby on the reef (more than 40% settled at <30 m), resulting in sibling aggregations. Our findings highlight the importance of self‐recruitment together with clonality in stabilizing population dynamics, which may ultimately enhance local sustainability and resilience to disturbance.  相似文献

Dinoflagellates in the genus Symbiodinium are among the most abundant and important group of eukaryotic microbes found in coral reef ecosystems. Recent analyses conducted on various host cnidarians indicated that Symbiodinium assemblages in the Caribbean Sea are genetically and ecologically diverse. In order to further characterize this diversity and identify processes important to its origins, samples from six orders of Cnidaria comprising 45 genera were collected from reef habitats around Barbados (eastern Caribbean) and from the Mesoamerican barrier reef off the coast of Belize (western Caribbean). Fingerprinting of the ribosomal internal transcribed spacer 2 identified 62 genetically different Symbiodinium. Additional analyses of clade B Symbiodinium using microsatellite flanker sequences unequivocally characterized divergent lineages, or “species,” within what was previously thought to be a single entity (B1 or B184). In contrast to the Indo-Pacific where host-generalist symbionts dominate many coral communities, partner specificity in the Caribbean is relatively high and is influenced little by the host’s apparent mode of symbiont acquisition. Habitat depth (ambient light) and geographic isolation appeared to influence the bathymetric zonation and regional distribution for most of the Symbiodinium spp. characterized. Approximately 80% of Symbiodinium types were endemic to either the eastern or western Caribbean and 40–50% were distributed to compatible hosts living in shallow, high-irradiance, or deep, low-irradiance environments. These ecologic, geographic, and phylogenetic patterns indicate that most of the present Symbiodinium diversity probably originated from adaptive radiations driven by ecological specialization in separate Caribbean regions during the Pliocene and Pleistocene periods.  相似文献

Recovery of the threatened staghorn coral (Acropora cervicornis) is posited to play a key role in Caribbean reef resilience. At four Caribbean locations (including one restored and three extant populations), we quantified characteristics of contemporary staghorn coral across increasing conspecific densities, and investigated a hypothesis of facilitation between staghorn coral and reef fishes. High staghorn densities in the Dry Tortugas exhibited significantly less partial mortality, higher branch growth, and supported greater fish abundances compared to lower densities within the same population. In contrast, partial mortality, branch growth, and fish community composition did not vary with staghorn density at the three other study locations where staghorn densities were lower overall. This suggests that density-dependent effects between the coral and fish community may only manifest at high staghorn densities. We then evaluated one facilitative mechanism for such density-dependence, whereby abundant fishes sheltering in dense staghorn aggregations deliver nutrients back to the coral, fueling faster coral growth, thereby creating more fish habitat. Indeed, dense staghorn aggregations within the Dry Tortugas exhibited significantly higher growth rates, tissue nitrogen, and zooxanthellae densities than sparse aggregations. Similarly, higher tissue nitrogen was induced in a macroalgae bioassay outplanted into the same dense and sparse aggregations, confirming greater bioavailability of nutrients at high staghorn densities. Our findings inform staghorn restoration efforts, suggesting that the most effective targets may be higher coral densities than previously thought. These coral-dense aggregations may reap the benefits of positive facilitation between the staghorn and fish community, favoring the growth and survivorship of this threatened species.  相似文献

The positive effects of the tube dwelling polychaete Lanice conchilega for the associated benthic community emphasizes this bio-engineer’s habitat structuring capacity (Rabaut et al. in Estuar Coastal Shelf Sci, 2007). Therefore, L. conchilega aggregations are often referred to as reefs. The reef building capacity of ecosystem engineers is important for marine management as the recognition as reef builder will increase the protected status the concerned species. To classify as reefs however, bio-engineering activities need to significantly alter several habitat characteristics: elevation, sediment consolidation, spatial extent, patchiness, reef builder density, biodiversity, community structure, longevity and stability [guidelines to apply the EU reef-definition by Hendrick and Foster-Smith (J Mar Biol Assoc UK 86:665–677, 2006)]. This study investigates the physical and temporal characteristics of high density aggregations of L. conchilega. Results show that the elevation and sediment consolidation of the biogenic mounds was significantly higher compared to the surrounding unstructured sediment. Areas with L. conchilega aggregations tend to be extensive and patchiness is high (coverage 5–18%). The discussion of present study evaluates whether L. conchilega aggregations can be considered as reefs (discussing physical, biological and temporal characteristics). Individual aggregations were found to persist for several years if yearly renewal of existing aggregations through juvenile settlement occurred. This renewal is enhanced by local hydrodynamic changes and availability of attaching structures (adult tubes). We conclude that the application of the EU definition for reefs provides evidence that all physical and biological characteristics are present to classify L. conchilega as a reef builder. For temporal characteristics, this study shows several mechanisms exist for reefs to persist for a longer period of time. However, a direct evidence of long-lived individual reefs does not exist. As a range of aggregation development exists, ‘reefiness’ is not equal for all aggregations and a scoring table to quantify L. conchilega reefiness is presented.  相似文献

The diversity of tropical marine invertebrates is poorly documented, especially those groups for which collecting adults is difficult. We collected the planktonic tornaria larvae of hemichordates (acorn worms) to assess their hidden diversity in the Neotropics. Larvae were retrieved in plankton tows from waters of the Pacific and Caribbean coasts of Panama, followed by DNA barcoding of mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) and 16S ribosomal DNA to estimate their diversity in the region. With moderate sampling efforts, we discovered six operational taxonomic units (OTUs) in the Bay of Panama on the Pacific coast, in contrast to the single species previously recorded for the entire Tropical Eastern Pacific. We found eight OTUs in Bocas del Toro province on the Caribbean coast, compared to seven species documented from adults in the entire Caribbean. All OTUs differed from each other and from named acorn worm sequences in GenBank by >10% pairwise distance in COI and >2% in 16S. Two of our OTUs matched 16S hemichordate sequences in GenBank: one was an unidentified or unnamed Balanoglossus from the Caribbean of Panama, and the other was an unidentified ptychoderid larva from the Bahamas. The species accumulation curves suggest that nearly all the species have been collected and only one more species might still remain undetected in the Pacific. In contrast, the Caribbean species accumulation curve suggests that further sampling could yield more than 10 additional OTUs. Tornaria from the 14 OTUs exhibited typical planktotrophic morphologies, and, in some cases, may be distinguished by differences in pigmentation and by the number of telotrochal ciliary bands, but in general, few diagnostic differences were detected.  相似文献

The ascidian Trididemnum solidum competes for space on Caribbean reefs and is capable of overgrowing live scleractinian corals. From 2006 to 2009, we monitored over 30,000 coral colonies and quantified competitive interactions with this ascidian at four reef sites along the Mexican Caribbean. The total number of competitive interactions increased in time, but the mean percentage of coral colonies involved in interactions remained lower than 1% in all reefs. Bottom cover by T. solidum was also low (mean < 0.5%) in all reef sites in all sampling years. We conclude that during the temporal scope of our study, the overall potential effect of T. solidum on the dynamics of Mexican Caribbean coral populations was minimal.  相似文献

The life history of an enchytraeid worm, Enchytraeus variatus, was studied under laboratory conditions at 18–22 °C. This species can reproduce simultaneously by asexual (architomy) or sexual reproduction. The number of ova per cocoon varies from 5 to 20 (x = 10.9). The generation period (from cocoon to next cocoon) varies from 14 to 39 days (x = 26.1) according to the period of the year. The number of generations per year is between 7.3 and 26.1 (x = 14). A mature worm can lay between 23.7 and 25.8 cocoons during its life (254 days as maximum observed) at a mean rate of 0.12 cocoon worm–1 day–1. Experimental cultures were carried out to determine the structure, density and biomass of the populations. A maximal density of 1 396 314 worms was recorded after 85 days of culture. Net production reached 21.48 g m–2 day–1 after 26 days in a culture initiated from cocoons.  相似文献

For 15 months, the composition and abundance of drift vegetation were determined from a plantdominated fringing reef at Galeta Point, Caribbean Panama. Five nets located downstream of the reef platform continuously sampled 1.0–1.3 ha of reef flat which included 137–202 m of fore reef. Time series and multiple correlation analysis were done to evaluate the dependence of drift biomass on selected physical and biological factors. Export and import rates and turnover times were derived and compared between the dominant species. Floating leaves, branches, and seeds of higher plants were the major components of imported drift with 52% of the dry weight mass, followed by algae and seagrass each with 19%, the water hyacinth Eichhornia with 2%, and floating tar with 8%. Exported biomass from the reef platform was higher in the dry-season (late November–March) than in the wet-season (April-early November). Within the 1.0–1.3 ha sampling area, export estimates ranged from 37–294 kg mo-1 for the seagrass Thalassia, 3–171 kg mo-1 for the alga Laurencia, and 3–74 kg mo-1 for the alga Acanthophora. Multiple correlation models indicated that meteorological and hydrographic conditions explained between 31 to 65% of the variance in the drift biomass and that the best predictors of exported biomass were tidal elevation and wind speed (3 week lag). Export rates increased with high tides and strong winds and decreased with elevated water temperatures. Autocorrelations of drift biomass were generally highest at 2 week intervals, suggesting that the quantity of drift removed from the platform was, in part, related to spring and neap tide cycles. Export rates were also affected by the morphology of the vegetation, development of uprights, and location on the reef platform. Import rates of terrestrial-plant debris, the hyacinth Eichhornia, the seagrass Syringodium, and the brown alga Sargassum did not exhibit pronounced seasonal patterns in abundance and averaged 60.2, 1.9, 1.1, and 2.7 g d-1m-1, respectively. Wind speed was negatively correlated with Sargassum abundance, suggesting that strong winds depleted it from nearshore waters. Floating tar averaged about 10 g d-1m-1, the highest reported in the Caribbean. The plant-dominated fringing reef at Galeta Point is shown to be a major source, as well as a recipient, of drift vegetation.  相似文献

Synopsis Gulf of California populations of Serranus fasciatus are composed of functional simultaneous hermaphrodites and males. This is the first serranid known to have this sexual pattern which is functionally intermediate between the typical serranid patterns of simultaneous and protogynous hermaphroditism. Males of S. fasciatus are derived from hermaphrodites by resorption of ovarian tissue and proliferation of the extant testicular band. Distinct sexual roles are evident in spawning events. Hermaphrodites gain female function by pair spawning with males (124 and 125 observed spawns) and rarely with other hermaphrodites (1 of 125). Hermaphrodites gain male function by sneak spawning (9 of 125) and rarely by pair spawning with other hermaphrodites. Males exclusively pair spawned with hermaphrodites. Despite its unusual sexual pattern, S. fasciatus appears allied with other Serranus species based on similarities in gonad morphology.  相似文献

Widespread mortality of the black sea urchin Diadema antillarum occurred in the Caribbean in 1983; beginning in Panama in January, and having its major impact at Barbados in September. Mortality on ten reefs surveyed in Barbados was 93.2%, with the highest being 99.9% and the lowest 86.9%. Mortality on each reef was independent of the pre-mortality density on the reef. Urchins with test diameters between 20 and 40 mm were more severely affected than smaller or larger urchins. Populations on reefs exposed to incoming oceanic water suffered heavier mortality than those on protected reefs. Mean size of urchins was smallest on high density reefs. This may indicate a negative effect of density on urchin growth. At post-mortality densities, urchins may grow faster and reach sexual maturity sooner.  相似文献
