In offspring production, with whom are the maternally derived (madumnal), paternally derived (padumnal), and maternal genes in conflict? I developed a model, in which those genes independently regulate resource absorption of developing offspring, and offspring with a high realized resource absorption rate may become large, but may suffer abortion due to overgrowth. I analyzed two cases: maternal control is weak (maternal genes cannot completely inhibit the resource demand by the madumnal or the padumnal genes) and is strong (maternal genes can completely inhibit it). I found that, under weak maternal control, the maternal genes inhibit resource absorption, but the madumnal and padumnal genes enhance it if the abortion cost of overgrowth is low. The maternal and madumnal genes inhibit resource absorption, but the padumnal genes enhance it if the cost is high. Under strong maternal control, the maternal genes inhibit resource absorption, but the madumnal and padumnal genes enhance it irrespective of the degree of abortion cost. I also found that the effects of offspring abortion on an ESS size and number of offspring when independent are large under weak maternal control, but are moderated under strong maternal control.  相似文献

Two recent studies provide provocative experimental findings about the potential influence of kin recognition and cooperation on the level of sexual conflict in Drosophila melanogaster. In both studies, male fruit flies apparently curbed their mate-harming behaviours in the presence of a few familiar or related males, suggesting some form of cooperation mediated by kin selection. In one study, the reduction in agonistic behaviour by brothers apparently rendered them vulnerable to dramatic loss of paternity share when competing with an unrelated male. If these results are robust and generalizable, fruit flies could be a major new focus for the experimental study of kin selection and social evolution. In our opinion, however, the restrictive conditions required for male cooperation to be adaptive in this species make it unlikely to evolve. We investigated these phenomena in two different populations of D. melanogaster using protocols very similar to those in the two previous studies. Our experiments show no evidence for a reduction in mate harm based upon either relatedness or familiarity between males, and no reduction in male reproductive success when two brothers are in the presence of an unfamiliar, unrelated, ‘foreign’ male. Thus, the reduction of sexual conflict owing to male cooperation does not appear to be a general feature of the species, at least under domestication, and these contrasting results call for further investigation: in new populations, in the field and in the laboratory populations in which these phenomena have been reported.  相似文献

Twenty-eight men were given morning and afternoon oral glucose tolerance tests in 1969 and again in 1975. According to British Diabetic Association criteria all 28 had normal morning values in 1969 but seven had "afternoon diabetes". Four men had diabetic values in the morning in 1975 but only two of these had had afternoon diabetes in 1969. Better prediction of subsequent diabetes was obtained by calculating the area under the morning glucose tolerance curve in 1969. All four men who progressed to diabetes had areas exceeding 1000 units, which distinguished them absolutely from the other 24. They also tended to be more obese, but this was less predictive of subsequent diabetes.  相似文献

The diversity of reproductive strategies in nature is shaped by a plethora of factors including energy availability. For example, both low temperatures and limited food availability could increase larval exposure to predation by slowing development, selecting against pelagic and/or feeding larvae. The frequency of hermaphroditism could increase under low food availability as population density (and hence mate availability) decreases. We examine the relationship between reproductive/life-history traits and energy availability for 189 marine gastropod families. Only larval type was related to energy availability with the odds of having planktotrophic larvae versus direct development decreasing by 1% with every one-unit increase in the square root of carbon flux. Simultaneous hermaphroditism also potentially increases with carbon flux, but this effect disappears when accounting for evolutionary relationships among taxa. Our findings are in contrast to some theory and empirical work demonstrating that hermaphroditism should increase and planktotrophic development should decrease with decreasing productivity. Instead, they suggest that some reproductive strategies are too energetically expensive at low food availabilities, or arise only when energy is available, and others serve to capitalize on opportunities for aggregation or increased energy availability.  相似文献

Why warning patterns are so diverse is an enduring evolutionary puzzle. Because predators associate particular patterns with unpleasant experiences, an individual's predation risk should decrease as the local density of its warning pattern increases, promoting pattern monomorphism. Distasteful Heliconius butterflies are known for their diversity of warning patterns. Here, we explore whether interlocus sexual conflict can contribute to their diversification. Male Heliconius use warning patterns as mating cues, but mated females may suffer costs if this leads to disturbance, favouring novel patterns. Using simulations, we show that under our model conditions drift alone is unlikely to cause pattern diversification, but that sexual conflict can assist such a process. We also find that genetic architecture influences the evolution of male preferences, which track changes in warning pattern due to sexual selection. When male attraction imposes costs on females, this affects the speed at which novel pattern alleles increase. In two experiments, females laid fewer eggs with males present. However, although males in one experiment showed less interest in females with manipulated patterns, we found no evidence that female colouration mitigates sex-specific costs. Overall, male attraction to conspecific warning patterns may impose an unrecognized cost on Heliconius females, but further work is required to determine this experimentally.  相似文献

Resolving the paradox of sex, with its twofold cost to genic transmission, remains one of the major unresolved questions in evolutionary biology. Counting this genetic cost has now gone genomic. In this issue of Molecular Ecology, Kraaijeveld et al. (2012) describe the first genome‐scale comparative study of related sexual and asexual animal lineages, to test the hypothesis that asexuals bear heavier loads of deleterious transposable elements. A much higher density of such parasites might be expected, due to the inability of asexual lineages to purge transposons via mechanisms exclusive to sexual reproduction. They find that the answer is yes—and no—depending upon the family of transposons considered. Like many such advances in testing theory, more questions are raised by this study than answered, but a door has been opened to molecular evolutionary analyses of how responses to selection from intragenomic parasites might mediate the costs of sex.  相似文献

Food sharing and (to a lesser extent) labor sharing play central roles in the evolution of cooperation literature. One popular explanation for sharing beyond the family is that it reduces the likelihood of shortages by pooling risk across households. However, the frequency and scope of sharing have never been systematically documented across nonindustrial societies, and the literature is driven by theoretical models, experimental games, and case studies among a few extensively-studied populations. Here we explore the cross-cultural context, frequency, and scope of food and labor sharing customs in relation to resource stress. Using ethnographic data from a worldwide sample of 98 societies in the Standard Cross-Cultural Sample (SCCS), we test the following hypotheses: 1) customary sharing of food and labor beyond the household are cultural universals, 2) societies subject to more resource stress (including unpredictable food-destroying natural hazards) will share more frequently, and 3) the more frequent the resource stress, the broader the geographic and social scope of sharing customs. Hypotheses 1 and 2 are generally supported and are consistent with the theory that extensive beyond-household sharing is adaptive in societies that are subject to more resource stress. Hypothesis 3 was not supported and, contrary to our predictions, there is suggestive evidence that sharing beyond-relatives may be attenuated when resource stress is high. In light of these findings, we consider how resource stress may constitute an important selection pressure for maintaining extensive cooperation and help to explain the ubiquity of beyond-household sharing.  相似文献

Atopy is an IgE-mediated condition known to aggregate in families and is a major risk factor for asthma. As part of the Collaborative Study on the Genetics of Asthma (CSGA), a genome-wide scan for atopy, defined by skin sensitivity to one or more common environmental allergens, was conducted in 287 CSGA families (115 African American, 138 Caucasian and 34 Hispanic). Using a nonparametric genetic analysis approach, two regions were observed in the sample of all families that yielded multipoint lod scores >1.5 (chromosome 11q, lod=1.55 between D11S1986 and D11S1998; chromosome 20p between D20S473 and D20S604, lod=1.54). Modeling that included multiple genomic positions simultaneously indicated that four chromosomal regions accounted for the majority of evidence for linkage in the combined families. These four regions are on chromosomes 10p near D10S1412 (lod=0.94), 11q near D11S1986 (lod=1.76), 17q near D17S784 (lod=0.97) and 20p near D20S473 (lod=1.74). In the subset of pedigrees giving positive evidence for linkage on chromosome 11q, the evidence for linkage increased by lod scores greater than one in four other chromosomal regions: 5q (D5S1480, lod=1.65), 8p (D8S1113, lod=1.60), 12p (D12S372, lod=1.54) and 14q (D14S749, lod=1.70). These results suggest that several regions may harbor genes contributing to the risk for atopy and these may interact with one another in a complex manner.This work is published on behalf of the NHLBI Collaborative Study on the Genetics of Asthma  相似文献

A colonial lifestyle necessitates communication between colony members to coordinate functions and enable resource sharing through physiological integration. Colonial integration is predicted to increase with both the size of the colony and the level of specialization (polymorphism). In modular colonies, although integration might be reflected in structural characteristics such as module spacing or branching patterns, physiological integration is fundamentally dependent on the level of connectedness between modules. In cheilostome bryozoans, funicular tissue links adjacent zooids through pores within zooid walls and is the most likely means of nutrient transport within colonies. We sought to determine whether the relative numbers of pores (septulae) and pore plates (septal chambers) per zooid differed across colony regions in a monomorphic species, Watersipora subtorquata, and one showing some polymorphism, Mucropetraliella ellerii. Within each species, the morphology of pore plates corresponded to functional predictions based on their position within the zooid, and connection numbers per zooid increased with colony size. Contrary to expectations, however, the more complex species, M. ellerii, had significantly fewer porous connections per zooid than W. subtorquata. Physiological connectedness was therefore not predicted by simple assessment of polymorphism in these species and may not be sufficient to infer colonial integration in related taxa.  相似文献

Background

The number of births attended by individual family physicians who practice intrapartum care varies. We wanted to determine if the practice–volume relations that have been shown in other fields of medical practice also exist in maternity care practice by family doctors.

Methods

For the period April 1997 to August 1998, we analyzed all singleton births at a major maternity teaching hospital for which the family physician was the responsible physician. Physicians were grouped into 3 categories on the basis of the number of births they attended each year: fewer than 12, 12 to 24, and 25 or more. Physicians with a low volume of deliveries (72 physicians, 549 births), those with a medium volume of deliveries (34 physicians, 871 births) and those with a high volume of deliveries (46 physicians, 3024 births) were compared in terms of maternal and newborn outcomes. The main outcome measures were maternal morbidity, 5-minute Apgar score and admission of the baby to the neonatal intensive care unit or special care unit. Secondary outcomes were obstetric procedures and consultation patterns.

Results

There was no difference among the 3 volume cohorts in terms of rates of maternal complications of delivery, 5-minute Apgar scores of less than 7 or admissions to the neonatal intensive care unit or the special care unit, either before or after adjustment for parity, pregnancy-induced hypertension, diabetes, ethnicity, lone parent status, maternal age, gestational age, newborn birth weight and newborn head circumference at birth. High- and medium-volume family physicians consulted with obstetricians less often than low-volume family physicians (adjusted odds ratio [OR] 0.586 [95% confidence interval, CI, 0.479–0.718] and 0.739 [95% CI 0.583–0.935] respectively). High- and medium-volume family physicians transferred the delivery to an obstetrician less often than low-volume family physicians (adjusted OR 0.668 [95% CI 0.542–0.823] and 0.776 [95% CI 0.607–0.992] respectively). Inductions were performed by medium-volume family physicians more often than by low-volume family physicians (adjusted OR 1.437 [95% CI 1.036–1.992].

Interpretation

Family physicians'' delivery volumes were not associated with adverse outcomes for mothers or newborns. Low-volume family physicians referred patients and transferred deliveries to obstetricians more frequently than high- or medium-volume family physicians. Further research is needed to validate these findings in smaller facilities, both urban and rural.More than 20 years ago, Luft and associates1 conducted one of the earliest volume–outcome studies. Since then, many studies addressing the relation between volume of procedures and patient outcomes have been published.2,3 In some of these studies, either the hospital size or the physician procedural volume was used as a surrogate for physician expertise. Among studies analyzing hospital volumes and outcomes, better outcomes have been associated with higher patient volumes in some instances4,5,6,7 but not others.3,8,9 Some studies of individual provider volume have shown a positive relation between volume and outcomes,10,11 whereas others have shown no relation or inconsistent results.3,12 Finally, a few studies analyzing both hospital volume and provider volume have reported a positive volume–outcome relation.13,14Criticism levelled at the methods used in volume–outcome studies have addressed the lack of adjustment for case mix, different cutoff points for volume categories and retrospective design.3 Other factors that have an effect on patient outcomes but that have not been included in previous volume analyses include health maintenance organization status, physician certification and years since graduation, and patient socioeconomic status, age and ethnicity. Furthermore, most of the studies on volume have covered surgical or oncology specialities.The few studies that have been done on volume and outcome in maternity care have shown variable effects. Rural health care is often associated with lower volumes of obstetric procedures. However, no differences in maternal or newborn outcomes have been shown in some comparisons of births in urban and rural locations.15,16,17,18 Other studies have shown poorer maternal and newborn outcomes in low-volume hospitals, neonatal intensive care units (NICUs) and rural locations.19,20,21,22 Conversely, higher volume (hospitals with more than 1000 deliveries per year) has been associated with more maternal lacerations or complications.23When the health care provider has been the unit of analysis, a relation between volume and maternal or newborn outcome has been demonstrated in at least one study24 but not in others.25,26 Low volume has been defined as 20 to 24 deliveries per year.24,26 Hass and colleagues24 reported an adjusted odds ratio (OR) of 1.4 for low birth weight for infants delivered by low-volume non-board-certified physicians relative to high-volume non-board-certified physicians; the adjusted OR was 1.56 for low-volume board-certified physicians relative to high-volume board-certified physicians (98.7% of whom were obstetricians).Possible explanations for the differences among studies include differences in health care delivery systems, insurance coverage, experience and training of providers, maternal risk factors, triage or transfer of high-risk cases, choice of outcome measures, and changes over time in access to care, quality assurance and standard of living. Relations have been reported between maternal or newborn outcomes and smoking, maternal history of low birth weight (for previous pregnancies), pregnancy–induced hypertension, diabetes, prepregnancy weight, gestational weight gain, maternal height and age, multiple gestation, previous vaginal birth after cesarean section, history of previous delivery problems, parity, large-for-date fetus, ethnicity and fetal sex.25,27,28,29 Few studies of the relation between volume of births and obstetric outcome have been able to control for these potentially confounding variables and adjust for maternal risk factors.Our database of detailed accounts of births in one hospital setting allowed us to examine this issue more rigorously. We posed 2 research questions: Is there a relation between the volume of deliveries attended by individual family physicians and maternal and newborn outcomes? The Segregation Distorter (SD) system of Drosophila melanogaster is one the best-characterized meiotic drive complexes known. SD gains an unfair transmission advantage through heterozygous SD/SD(+) males by incapacitating SD(+)-bearing spermatids so that virtually all progeny inherit SD. Segregation distorter (Sd), the primary distorting locus in the SD complex, is a truncated duplication of the RanGAP gene, a major regulator of the small GTPase Ran, which has several functions including the maintenance of the nucleocytoplasmic RanGTP concentration gradient that mediates nuclear transport. The truncated Sd-RanGAP protein is enzymatically active but mislocalizes to the nucleus where it somehow causes distortion. Here I present data consistent with the idea that wild-type RanGAP, and possibly other loci able to influence the RanGTP gradient, has been caught up in an ancient genetic conflict that predates the SD complex. The legacy of this conflict could include the unexpectedly rapid evolution of nuclear transport-related proteins, the accumulation of chromosomal inversions, the recruitment of gene duplications, and the turnover of repetitive sequences in the centric heterochromatin.  相似文献

Do relatively longer limbs result in a lower energetic cost of locomotion? To determine whether or not cost is correlated with limb length in some way other than that due to their respective relationships to body mass, we have removed the effects of size by calculating the residuals of the relationship between each character and body size. We then regressed the pairs of residuals on one another. Because biological variables do not occur in a series of units that have evolved independently, the degree of divergence of two species is likely to be influenced by the length of time since they last shared a common ancestor. We therefore corrected for the phylogenetic relatedness of species. Data on the energetic cost of locomotion of a wide variety of species were taken from published sources. Data on limb lengths were taken from specimens in various museum collections which were similar in body mass (± 12%) to the specimens on which the cost measurements were made. None of the correlations between the residuals of either fore- or hindlimb length and neither of two estimates of the cost of locomotion was significant at P = 0.05. It is concluded that limb length does not importantly influence an animal's locomotor efficiency. These results do not imply the lack of a close relationship between cost and stride length.  相似文献

Sunscreens are designed to protect the skin from sunburn and, by inference, from skin cancer induction. Since immunosuppression by UV irradiation appears to be a prerequisite for skin cancer induction, the immunoprotective potential of sunscreens is of importance. Two experiments were performed to determine the effect of past territoriality and mating success on subsequent dominance and ability to attract females. First, in 14 staged, pair-wise encounters, the development of nuptial coloration and agonistic behaviour was examined in two types of males: previously territorial (PT) and previously non-territorial (PNT) males. Previously territorial males developed a more intense nuptial coloration and won all contests. Second, to test the males' ability to attract females, other factors were controlled that could have affected female mate choice, such as male size, quality of breeding substrate and male-male interactions. In 40 trials, PT males were more active, developed a more intense nuptial coloration, courted females more vigorously, spawned sooner and had a higher mating success than PNT males. Thus, in pupfish, Cyprinodon pecosensis, previous reproductive history is a good indicator of both dominance and mating success. Only males in good physical condition achieve high mating success, and both intra- and inter-sexual selection are important in maintaining the close correlation between expression of nuptial coloration, a second sexual trait, and other male attributes, such as physical condition and vigour, that allow a male to secure and defend a territory against rivals and to attract and spawn with females.  相似文献

Psychophysical experiments suggested a relative importance of a narrow band of spatial frequencies for recognition of face identity in humans. There exists, however, no conclusive evidence of why it is that such frequencies are preferred. To address this question, I examined the amplitude spectra of a large number of face images and observed that face spectra generally fall off more steeply with spatial frequency compared with ordinary natural images. When external face features (such as hair) are suppressed, then whitening of the corresponding mean amplitude spectra revealed higher response amplitudes at those spatial frequencies which are deemed important for processing face identity. The results presented here therefore provide support for that face processing characteristics match corresponding stimulus properties.  相似文献
