House mice (Mus musculus) are a widespread introduced species with major but often overlooked impacts on ecosystems, proportionally greater when they are the only introduced mammal present. Studies conducted on the ecology of mice on Antipodes Island, where they are the only introduced mammal, are presented and compared to previous work over the past four decades. Mice live-trapped on grids were more abundant in dense coastal tussock (147 mice/ha) compared to inland plateau grasslands (59 mice/ha), with a significant effect of age, but not sex, on both capture probability and range size. Body-size of mice has not changed over four decades, providing no evidence of gigantism, which on other Southern Ocean islands has been speculated to increase the predation risk to birds. Over 2,405 invertebrates from fourteen Orders were identified from pitfall traps and litter samples across five sites. Differences in invertebrate communities and taxonomic units attributable to habitat and altitude were detected among sites in both pitfall and litter samples on Antipodes Island. Differences in invertebrate communities were detected from litter samples on a neighbouring mouse-free island, with significantly greater abundance of large Amphipods and Collembola, but fewer Spiders. These data on introduced mouse ecology and invertebrate distribution on Antipodes Island contribute to the body of knowledge on Southern Ocean islands. 相似文献

Alien species are brought into countries world wide on a massive scale for agricultural production, ex situ conservation, landscape aesthetics, gardens, and ecosystem restoration. Unfortunately, some of these species have escaped and adversely impacted on regional as well as global biodiversity conservation and agricultural production. To reduce such risks, it is necessary to implement specific and effective measures. Since various government departments and institutions are involved in the management of alien species, it is difficult to prevent native and agroecosystems from being invaded by invited species. We propose the establishment of a supervision and inspection continuum over intentional species introduction, similar to that which exists in some countries over unintentional species introductions. Namely, a justification of the necessity to import, a risk assessment, assurances as to provision of an adequate containment facility assessment, and a damage-limitation protocol should that need to be invoked. These requirements should be satisfied before an alien species is knowingly imported, and the necessary follow-up supervision is important post- importation. 相似文献

Microbial processes have a central role in the global fluxes of the key biogenic greenhouse gases (carbon dioxide, methane and nitrous oxide) and are likely to respond rapidly to climate change. Whether changes in microbial processes lead to a net positive or negative feedback for greenhouse gas emissions is unclear. To improve the prediction of climate models, it is important to understand the mechanisms by which microorganisms regulate terrestrial greenhouse gas flux. This involves consideration of the complex interactions that occur between microorganisms and other biotic and abiotic factors. The potential to mitigate climate change by reducing greenhouse gas emissions through managing terrestrial microbial processes is a tantalizing prospect for the future. 相似文献

During the last few years the subject of metallothioneins (MTs) in terrestrial invertebrates has gained increasing attention. One reason for this may be that terrestrial invertebrates provide new insights into the biological diversity of MTs, with the potential of discovering alternative models of structural and functional relationships. Four groups of terrestrial invertebrates have been studied in detail, namely nematodes, insects, snails and earthworms, with the present article focusing on MTs from the latter two groups. Snails are interesting because they possess distinct MT isoforms involved in different metal-specific tasks. In the Roman snail (Helix pomatia), for example, one isoform is predominantly expressed in the midgut gland, accounting for the accumulation, binding and detoxification of cadmium. The second isoform, which is present in the snail's mantle, is substantially different regarding its primary structure. Furthermore, it binds nearly exclusively copper, and thus is probably involved in the homeostatic regulation of essential trace elements. Earthworm MTs merit our attention because of another peculiarity: they seem to be much more unstable than snail MTs, particularly under conventional conditions of preparation. The cDNA of the brandling worm (Eisenia foetida), for instance, codes for a putative MT, which is about twice the size of the actual protein. The isolated MT peptide binds four Cd2+ ions and represents a one-domain MT entity that is stable and functional in vitro. This strongly suggests that earthworm MTs are either posttranslationally modified, or subjected to enzymatic cleavage during preparation. Both snail and earthworm MTs are inducible by metal exposure, especially by cadmium, thus supporting the idea of using them as potential biomarkers for environmental metal pollution. Whilst snail MTs have already been tested in this respect with some success, the use of earthworm MTs as biomarkers still remains to be evaluated, especially in the light of the unknown significance of their posttranslational instability. 相似文献

SUMMARY.
- 1 Benthic microflora (bacteria and algae) and macro invertebrates on two types of introduced substrates, unglazed clay tiles and sterilized rocks, were compared quantitatively with natural rocks in a third-order stream. Big Sulphur Creek, California, U.S.A.
- 2 Exposure periods ranging from 28 to 153 days for introduced substrates indicated that tiles accurately represented bacterial density, chlorophyll a, and macro invertebrate density and species composition of natural rocks within 28 days; phaeophytin and total organic material (as ash-free dry weight) were accurately represented within 63 days. In contrast. sterilized rocks required a 63 day exposure to simulate most of the above natural-rock features.
- 3 Tiles reduced sampling variability (i.e. increased precision) when compared with either natural or sterilized rocks, especially the variability associated with algal measurements. In benthic studies where a sufficiently long exposure period is possible (1-2 months), introduced substrates can reduce the effort and cost of benthic sampling while minimizing habitat disruption.

A modular assessment scheme for assisting the risk management of introduced fishes is described, with its recent application
to England and Wales demonstrated. The initial module prioritises the introduced fishes in the risk assessment area according
to their potential invasiveness and current distribution. The second module then assesses populations of the prioritised species
in relation to the character of their receiving waters and the potential risks posed by their population in that circumstance;
the output is a suggested management action for each population. The third module evaluates the suggested management action
in relation to its potential impacts in the environment and how these impacts may be mitigated. The final module assesses
the estimated cumulative cost of the selected management action relative to an alternative action. To demonstrate its potential
value for managing extant populations of introduced fish, three eradication case-studies from England were assessed retrospectively
using the scheme. This revealed eradication of two topmouth gudgeon Pseudorasbora parva populations was commensurate with their levels of ecological risk in the environment. By contrast, initial assessment of
the eradication of a feral population of fathead minnow Pimephales promelas suggested control and containment was the commensurate management action due to a relatively low risk of natural dispersal.
Application of the scheme elsewhere in the world and to other faunal groups should enable more objective decision-making in

Terrestrial invertebrate distribution was surveyed over 12 km2 of the ice-free area at Cape Bird, Ross Island, Antarctica. Gomphiocephalus hodgsoni (Collembola: Hypogastruridae), Stereotydeus mollis and Nanorchestes antarcticus (Acari: Prostigmata), Panagrolaimus davidi, Plectus sp. and Scottnema lindsayae (Nematoda), Tardigrada, Rotifera and Protozoa were all recorded. Invertebrates were found at 47 of 103 locations sampled. Logistic regression analysis suggested that the presence of mites and Collembola was strongly related to chlorophyll-a content of soil; but only Stereotydeus mollis and N. antarcticus were related to the presence of macroscopic vegetation, suggesting that current methods of assessing areas for protection may not adequately allow for invertebrate communities. Invertebrate communities were not dependent on ornithogenic carbon input. A better understanding of dispersal mechanisms is necessary to understand distributions of invertebrates in ice-free areas, particularly in light of potential habitat changes as a result of climate change. 相似文献

New techniques have identified a wide range of organisms with the capacity to carry out biological nitrogen fixation (BNF)—greatly expanding our appreciation of the diversity and ubiquity of N fixers—but our understanding of the rates and controls of BNF at ecosystem and global scales has not advanced at the same pace. Nevertheless, determining rates and controls of BNF is crucial to placing anthropogenic changes to the N cycle in context, and to understanding, predicting and managing many aspects of global environmental change. Here, we estimate terrestrial BNF for a pre-industrial world by combining information on N fluxes with 15N relative abundance data for terrestrial ecosystems. Our estimate is that pre-industrial N fixation was 58 (range of 40–100) Tg N fixed yr−1; adding conservative assumptions for geological N reduces our best estimate to 44 Tg N yr−1. This approach yields substantially lower estimates than most recent calculations; it suggests that the magnitude of human alternation of the N cycle is substantially larger than has been assumed. 相似文献

Global patterns of root turnover for terrestrial ecosystems 总被引:42,自引:1,他引:42
Root turnover is a critical component of ecosystem nutrient dynamics and carbon sequestration and is also an important sink for plant primary productivity. We tested global controls on root turnover across climatic gradients and for plant functional groups by using a database of 190 published studies. Root turnover rates increased exponentially with mean annual temperature for fine roots of grasslands ( r 2 = 0.48) and forests ( r 2 = 0.17) and for total root biomass in shrublands ( r 2 = 0.55). On the basis of the best-fit exponential model, the Q 10 for root turnover was 1.4 for forest small diameter roots (5 mm or less), 1.6 for grassland fine roots, and 1.9 for shrublands. Surprisingly, after accounting for temperature, there was no such global relationship between precipitation and root turnover. The slowest average turnover rates were observed for entire tree root systems (10% annually), followed by 34% for shrubland total roots, 53% for grassland fine roots, 55% for wetland fine roots, and 56% for forest fine roots. Root turnover decreased from tropical to high-latitude systems for all plant functional groups. To test whether global relationships can be used to predict interannual variability in root turnover, we evaluated 14 yr of published root turnover data from a shortgrass steppe site in northeastern Colorado, USA. At this site there was no correlation between interannual variability in mean annual temperature and root turnover. Rather, turnover was positively correlated with the ratio of growing season precipitation and maximum monthly temperature ( r 2 = 0.61). We conclude that there are global patterns in rates of root turnover between plant groups and across climatic gradients but that these patterns cannot always be used for the successful prediction of the relationship of root turnover to climate change at a particular site. 相似文献

Grouse moor management: habitat and conservation implications for invertebrates in southern Scotland
The distribution of ground beetle, rove beetle, spider and plant bug species assemblages, and the occurrence of other beetle species, was investigated in a five-year survey of a grouse moor in the Scottish borders, some of which was managed by burning, cutting and herbicide application. Multivariate analyses were used to assess the relationship between assemblage distribution and a number of environmental variables. The management of dry Calluna moor had a positive effect on the habitat diversity for ground beetles and plant bugs but had little effect on rove beetles and spiders. A total of 39 nationally rare and scarce species (38 beetle, 1 plant bug) was recorded in the survey. The most important habitat present was on streamside sites, especially sediment. A number of these rarer species were restricted to sites managed by burning and cutting but other species were only found on unmanaged wet Calluna moor. Molinia-dominated moor was generally of poorer quality than Calluna sites, with fewer rare and scarce species and lower site rarity values based on the ground beetle species recorded. The highest median site rarity scores were for dry, open, managed Calluna sites. In order to maximise both habitat diversity and the incidence of rare and scarce species on grouse moor, a mosaic of both managed and undisturbed patches differing in soil characteristics, plant composition and vegetation structure appears to be required. 相似文献

In analyses that attempt to estimate the costs of species invasions, it has been typical to report the costs of management and/or to multiply per-unit costs by the number affected to arrive at a total. These estimates are of limited value for most policy questions. We start our discussion by recognizing that biological pollutants such as aquatic invasive species are like conventional pollutants in important ways and appeal to the well-developed literature on conventional pollution to guide our thinking into how best to conceptualize the problem. We use a standard pollution control framework to identify the margins over which costs and benefits should be estimated to guide wise decision-making. We then use examples from the literature to illustrate how transactions in related markets can be used to estimate the benefits of management. The roles of adaptation, mitigation, and species population growth have particular relevance and are highlighted. In the final section of the paper, we think through the conditions under which investing in genetic biocontrol methods would be economically justified. 相似文献

We report the oldest fossil evidence of osteophagia by terrestrial invertebrates on both the Asian and African continents. Bones attributable to the Middle Jurassic dinosaur Chuanjiesaurus (Dinosauria: Sauropoda) were found with post-mortem insect modification in the Chuanjie Formation, Yunnan Province, China. The morphology of the borings closely matches the ichnogenus Cubiculum. Based on the lack of bioglyphs observed in Cubiculum ornatus, a new ichnospecies is proposed here. The new trace fossil, Cubiculum inornatus isp. nov., is interpreted to have been constructed for pupation by an unknown taxon of insect. Additionally, we report even older borings from Early Jurassic dinosaur bones of the Elliott Formation in the Karoo Basin, which represent the second oldest occurrence of insect traces in bone from continental settings. Both trace fossils sites have palaeogeographic implications for the origins and dispersal of osteophagia amongst terrestrial invertebrates during the Mesozoic. These discoveries push back the antiquity of pupation in animal bones by more than 100 million years to the Middle Jurassic, indicating that this behaviour, and osteophagy more generally, originated early in the Mesozoic, roughly comparable with the origination of insect pupation in woody substrates (Late Triassic). 相似文献

Summary Although it has been shown that invertebrates recolonize reflooded temporary streams from permanent refuges, e.g., the hyporheic zone, it has not been shown that they actively move into these refuges as streams dry. Substrate filled cages and drift nets were used to monitor invertebrate movement in two temporary streams and a permanent stream prior to and during drying to determine whether invertebrates leave drying riffles and enter flooded riffles. Invertebrate movement was essentially unidirectional in the permanent stream with downstream drift and with-in-substrate downstream movement dominating. In the temporary stream, movement vertically downward toward the hyporheic zone and upstream movement substantially contributed to a departure from a unidirectional pattern. In addition, prior to stream drying the relative colonization rate was higher and drift rate was lower in the temporary streams than in the permanent stream. During drying of the temporary stream, upstream movement continued to dominate but hyporheic movement was unimportant. Further, the upstream movement did not occur at the end of the riffle where it would lead to migration into non-drying riffles. Thus, even though movement patterns were different in permanent and temporary streams the pattern observed during stream drying would result in the concentration and subsequent death of invertebrates in drying riffles. This observation demonstrates that movement patterns of stream invertebrates do not necessarily result in behavioral avoidance of a dry period of temporary fiffles. 相似文献

We review progress toward developing a data-analysis system using invertebrate species lists in wetland evaluation procedures. Species lists for Mollusca, Carabidae (Coleoptera), Empidoidea and Syrphidae (Diptera), derived from samples collected at six stations along a transect established at a site on the floodplain of the River Loire (France) provide the raw data. An initial analysis using a traditional ordination method (Correspondence Analysis) is carried out. A data base was established for the 118 mollusc, carabid and syrphid species recorded, and each species was then treated not as a simple integer, but as an amalgam of digitised attributes deemed responsive to wetland conditions, in a correspondence analysis on instrumental variables. Despite the generalized nature of the attributes as defined for this example, the approach demonstrates a marked increase in interpretability of the output of analysis, in respect of the relation between the species and the floodplain environment. It also highlights the value of use of data pertaining to more than one taxonomic group and of selecting these taxonomic groups on the basis of complementarity of their bioindicator potential.Corresponding Editor: J.T.A. It is, however, also important to understand previous stages in the introduction-naturalization-invasion continuum ('the continuum'), especially the factors that mediate naturalization. The emphasis on invasiveness is partly because most invasions are only recognized once species occupy large adventive ranges or start to spread. Also, many studies lump all alien species, and fail to separate introduced, naturalized and invasive populations and species. These biases impede our ability to elucidate the full suite of drivers of invasion and to predict invasion dynamics, because different factors mediate progression along different sections of the continuum. A better understanding of the determinants of naturalization is important because all naturalized species are potential invaders. Processes leading to naturalization act differently in different regions and global biogeographical patterns of plant invasions result from the interaction of population-biological, macroecological and human-induced factors. We explore what is known about how determinants of naturalization in plants interact at various scales, and how their importance varies along the continuum. Research that is explicitly linked to particular stages of the continuum can generate new information that is appropriate for improving the management of biological invasions if, for example, potentially invasive species are identified before they exert an impact. 相似文献

Prostate cancer is diagnosed in younger men who want treatment that does not compromise their quality of life, take time away from work, or cause worrisome side effects. Laparoscopic radical prostatectomy, robot-assisted laparoscopic radical prostatectomy, and third-generation cryotherapy are modifications of previously used techniques in the treatment of prostate cancer and are presented in this article. Pheidole megacephala is an exotic ant species that has severely affected native invertebrate biodiversity throughout the tropics. Its impacts
have been documented extensively in relatively depauperate invertebrate communities, but not in species-rich habitats such
as tropical rain forests. Here we describe the local distribution of P. megacephala and its impacts on native invertebrate assemblages in and around a rain forest patch at Howard Springs, in Australia's monsoonal
tropics. P. megacephala was found to be confined to a single area of approximately 25 ha, with its distribution centered on drainage lines and the
rain forest. Significant but weak correlations were found between its abundance and vegetative canopy cover (positive) and
distance from the rain forest (negative). In the most heavily infested area within the rain forest, the abundance of P. megacephala was 37–110 times that of total native ant abundance found within uninfested plots, as measured by pitfall traps. The abundance
and richness of native ants and other invertebrates were significantly reduced in litter samples, pitfall catches and foliage
beats where P. megacephala was present, inversely relative to the abundance of P. megacephala. Only two individuals of a single native ant species were found within the most infested plot, with native ant richness being
reduced to about half in the least infested plot. The most persistent functional groups of native ants in infested plots were
Cryptic species, which forage primarily within soil and leaf litter, and Opportunists, which exhibit highly generalised foraging
behaviour. The highest abundance of P. megacephala corresponded with a 42–85% decrease in the abundance of other native invertebrates. Insect larvae were totally absent from
foliage beats collected at the most heavily infested plot. P. megacephala was found overall to be expanding its range, averaging 12 m range expansion in the dry season and contracting 7 m in the
wet season. It is able to spread into surrounding savanna habitats by occupying relatively sheltered microsites, such as beneath
logs and at the bases of trees. However, it is unlikely to attain high population densities in open savanna habitats because
of its relative intolerance of desiccation, and the prevalence of behaviourally dominant native ant species. Howard Springs
is currently the only rain forest patch in monsoonal Australia known to be infested by P. megacephala, but clearly this ant is a serious potential threat to the region's rain forest invertebrate fauna.

The invasion of alien species is an important cause of biodiversity loss worldwide, and many mammals are considered successful invaders outside their former range, with recognized detrimental effects to native ecosystems. Our aim was to review the current literature on alien mammals that have established feral populations in Brazil and to systematize the existing knowledge. Furthermore, we evaluated the current distributions of all invasion mammals and discuss different management actions, including eradication techniques for island populations. We found 17 species of alien mammals living in the wild in Brazil. Based on the current literature and databases regarding invasive species, Lepus europaeus and Sus scrofa had the largest distributions in the Brazilian territory and seem to continue expanding their geographic distributions. Feral dogs and cats were the main alien predators threatening wildlife conservation, especially in protected areas. Further, we call attention to the invasion of Bubalus bubalis, a large species that currently thrives in isolated populations but seems to be quickly expanding its distribution. In conclusion, alien mammals are widespread in Southern and Southeastern Brazil, but at least four ungulate species (Indian sambar, horse, goat, and axis deer) still have small and isolated populations. Finally, future efforts need to evaluate the impacts of alien mammals in Brazil and techniques for their control. 相似文献
