Invasive plants have wide-ranging impacts on native systems including reducing native plant richness and altering soil chemistry, microbes, and nutrient cycling. Increasingly, these effects are found to linger long after removal of the invader. We examined how soil chemistry, bacterial communities, and litter decomposition varied with cover of Euonymus fortunei, an invasive evergreen liana, in two central Kentucky deciduous forests. In one forest, E. fortunei invaded in the late 1990s but invasion remained patchy and we paired invaded and uninvaded plots to examine the associations between E. fortunei cover and our response variables. In the second forest, E. fortunei had completely invaded the forest by 2005; areas where it had been selectively removed by 2010 were paired with an adjacent invaded plot. Where E. fortunei had patchily invaded, E. fortunei patches had up to 3.5× nitrogen, 2.7× carbon, and 1.9× more labile glomalin in soils than uninvaded plots, whereas there were no differences in soil characteristics between invaded and removal plots. In the patchily invaded forest, bacterial community composition varied among invaded and non-invaded plots, whereas bacterial communities did not vary among invaded and removal plots. Finally, E. fortunei leaf litter decomposed faster (k = 4.91 year?1) than the native liana (k = 3.77 year?1), Vitis vulpina; decomposition of both E. fortunei and V. vulpina was faster in invaded (k = 7.10 year?1) than removal plots (k = 4.77 year?1). Our findings suggest that E. fortunei invasion increases the rate of leaf litter decomposition via high-quality litter, alters the decomposition environment, and shifts in the soil biotic communities associated with a dense mat of wintercreeper. Land managers with limited resources should target the densest mats for the greatest restoration potential and remove wintercreeper patches before they establish dense mats.  相似文献

The invasive species Eupatorium adenophorum is known to influence stand structure and wildfire the hazard in forests. In the current work, we quantitatively examined fire effects in invaded and uninvaded plots in southwestern Sichuan Province, China, with five different forest sites that had different types of dominant species: Pinus yunnanensis, P. yunnanensisQuercus spp., Keteleeria fortunei, K. fortuneiQuercus spp., and Eucalyptus robusta. We compared the fuel chemistry (moisture, ash, heat value, and ignition point) and fire severity (flame length, fire intensity) under three burning conditions between the invaded and uninvaded plots in each forest sites, and then analyzed the results using multivariate response permutation procedures (MRPP). The burning conditions included: low (fine fuel moisture of 15 % and 5 km/h windspeed), moderate (fine fuel moisture of 10 % and 15 km/h windspeed), and extreme (fine fuel moisture of 5 % and 30 km/h windspeed). With all five sites, the fire severity and fuel loads were clearly significantly higher at the invaded sites. Fire severity was also intensified in the invaded coniferous sites compared to their mixed forest sites. These results indicate that biological invasions may increase the surface fire severity, perhaps through an increase in the heat value, and fuel loads, while reducing the moisture, ash, and ignition point of the understory herbaceous.  相似文献

Forests understories in Europe are known to generally resist invasion, though some alien plants do invade woodland communities. Here we focused on the impact of the widespread invasive annual Impatiens glandulifera, common along watercourses, but recently spreading in forests up to timberline. We investigated its impact on plant–soil feedback and ecosystem functioning. We recorded >40 variables focusing on: soil characteristics, including micro- and macro-nutrients; characteristics of litter layer and enzyme activity in litter; and richness and species composition of the forest understory. Three treatments were followed for 3 years: plots invaded by I. glandulifera; adjacent invader removal plots within the invaded area; and spatially separated uninvaded plots outside the invaded area. The effect of year-to-year variation was generally greater than that of the treatments, especially in soil and litter characteristics. Copper and boron were higher in invaded than invader removal and uninvaded plots, though in quantities that are unlikely to harm other plants. We found no effect of I. glandulifera on litter characteristics or enzyme activity. Despite almost 80% cover of I. glandulifera, we did not detect any difference in species richness and total vegetation cover between invaded and uninvaded plots. The floristic composition differed among the uninvaded, invader removal and invaded plots across 3 years. Our results indicate that the effect of I. glandulifera on the forest community studied was minor, and largely resulted from its increased shading to other plant species. In conclusion, we show how misleading the evaluation of impacts can be if based on a single season.  相似文献

Global patterns show that estuaries are more invaded than open coasts and artificial habitats are more invaded than natural ones. The contention that artificial habitats in estuaries are more invasible than other habitats may result from variation in propagule supply, however, as artificial habitats are closely linked to vectors of non-native propagules, such as ships and boats. True comparisons of habitat invasibility require manipulations of propagule pressure, which has been historically difficult in marine systems. Using in-situ larval dosing, we delivered propagules of the widespread invasive ascidian Botrylloides violaceus into field mesocosms and assessed how habitat type (floating dock vs. benthic rock), resource availability (occupied vs. unoccupied plates), and propagule number (5, 25 and 50 larvae 225 cm?2) affected settlement (survival after 24 h) and recruitment (survival after 56 days) success. In-situ larval dosing was successful, and after eight weeks there were significant differences in recruitment due to initial dose-size, habitat type, and space availability. At the habitat scale, despite equal propagule delivery, PVC plates in natural benthic rock were not equally invasible and few propagules survived to recruitment. At the organism scale, increased habitat complexity, through facilitation by established fouling species, rather than freedom from space competitors, appears to be more important for B. violaceus to establish. Our results offer greater mechanistic understanding of broader invasion patterns between artificial and natural habitats. This work extends the possibilities for further research to counteract the confounding issue of unknown and unknowable propagule delivery when attempting to explain variation in invasion success.  相似文献

Harmonia axyridis (Pallas) is a coccinellid of Asian origin that has recently invaded substantial parts of Europe and is suspected to affect native coccinellid populations through intraguild predation and competition for food. Previous work has shown that two species from the Calvia genus appeared to be well protected against H. axyridis predation. To deepen our understanding on chemical protection of Calvia spp. and the predation risk by H. axyridis, we tested for susceptibility and palatability of Calvia spp. and H. axyridis eggs against predation by H. axyridis neonate larvae. Results show that eggs of C. quatuordecimguttata were mostly not eaten by H. axyridis, while eggs of the congeneric C. decemguttata were found to be largely unprotected against predation by the invasive coccinellid. We also observed that H. axyridis first instars successfully cannibalized on conspecific eggs. Removing the surface chemicals from C. quatuordecimguttata eggs resulted in significantly reduced protection from being preyed upon by H. axyridis, while applying these extracts onto C. decemguttata and H. axyridis eggs resulted in increased protection against H. axyridis larvae. The importance of surface chemicals in the interactions between H. axyridis and native coccinellids was confirmed by GC–MS analysis, showing a high diversity of hydrocarbons located on the surface of C. quatuordecimguttata eggs, i.e. more than twice as many when compared to C. decemguttata. Survival of H. axyridis larvae feeding on eggs of C. quatuordecimguttata, C. decemguttata or conspecific eggs, from which surface chemicals were removed by washing them with hexane, was not different from survival on unwashed eggs.  相似文献

We assessed drivers of ecological success along resource availability gradients for three invasive woody species: Prunus serotina Ehrh., Quercus rubra L. and Robinia pseudoacacia L. We aimed to check how much of invasion success, measured by invader biomass, is explained by propagule pressure and plant community invasibility. Using 3 years of observations from 372 study plots (100 m2 each) in temperate forests of Wielkopolski National Park (Poland) we investigated the hierarchy of predictors and partial dependencies using the random forest method. Our study indicated that propagule pressure explained more variance in success of invaders than invasibility—describing availability of resources and competitors in understory vegetation. We also found different responses of seedlings and saplings, connected with dependence on stored carbohydrates, which decreased seedling responses to resource availability gradients. However, resource availability (light and leaf litter predictors) had greater influence than predictors describing understory vegetation. Based on importance and response strength the species studied may be arranged by decreasing requirements for soil fertility and acidity: P. serotina?<?Q. rubra?<?R. pseudoacacia, whereas for light requirements and competition vulnerability the order is: P. serotina?>?Q. rubra?>?R. pseudoacacia. However, low light requirements of R. pseudoacacia may be biased by high proportion of sprouts supplied by parental trees. Results provide guidelines for effective management of invasive woody species in forest ecosystems and describe complex interactions between factors studied on ecological success of invaders.  相似文献

The effective restoration of wetland habitats requires understanding the establishment requirements, growth responses, and expansion dynamics of targeted plant species. This is particularly true when restoring areas that have been previously managed for other activities, such as agriculture, which can have legacy effects on the local environment. We investigated environmental factors (specifically hydrology and soil physicochemical conditions) that may influence the establishment, growth and expansion of Schoenoplectus californicus in a tidal freshwater marsh restoration site in the Sacramento–San Joaquin Delta, California, USA. This study site was previously leveed, drained, and utilized for agricultural production. A 1997 levee breach restored tidal connectivity and wetland vegetation has re-established in portions of the area. Our approach coupled an intensively-sampled transect study in S. californicus-dominated marshes with a spatially-extensive survey of S. californicus lateral expansion rates and elevation. Lateral expansion of S. californicus marsh edge was significantly less in lower elevation areas (0.61 ± 0.04 m NAVD88), whereas the marsh edge at higher elevations (0.84 ± 0.03 m NAVD88) exhibited greater expansion, often at rates greater than 1.0 m year?1. These elevation means correspond to percentages of time that the marsh surface was flooded of 100 and 94 %, respectively. Although marsh edge expansion was influenced by elevation and the resultant hydrology, other factors, such as physical exposure of marsh shorelines and compacted agricultural soils also appear to be important. However, once established, S. californicus appears to be able to ameliorate high soil bulk densities over time as the advancing marsh platform develops.  相似文献

The cotton mealybug Phenacoccus solenopsis (Tinsley) and Cotton leaf curl Multan virus (CLCuMV), serious threats to economic crops and garden plants, have invaded southern China and widely infected Hibiscus rosa-sinensis. Whether an inter-species connection has facilitated the invasion process is unclear. In this study the interaction between P. solenopsis and H. rosa-sinensis infected with CLCuMV was investigated in the laboratory. We observed that 1st and 2nd instar nymphs of P. solenopsis preferred to feed on healthy H. rosa-sinensis leaves, whereas 3rd instar nymphs and female adults had no preference between healthy and virus-infected H. rosa-sinensis leaves. The developmental time of each P. solenopsis developmental stage increased significantly after feeding on infected H. rosa-sinensis leaves (p < 0.05). In particular, the development time for 2nd instar female and male nymphs and 3rd instar female nymphs increased by approximately twofold. The generation time of female mealybugs increased from 25.84 d on healthy H. rosa-sinensis to 32.12 d when feeding on CLCuMV-infected H. rosa-sinensis, and the survival rate decreased from 71.04 % on healthy H. rosa-sinensis to 5.80 % on infected plants. Nymph survival was most affected by feeding on infected plants. Additionally, the fecundity of female mealybugs feeding on infected H. rosa-sinensis decreased by 47.8 %. Thus, feeding on CLCuMV-infected H. rosa-sinensis significantly decreased the biological fitness and invading and colonizing abilities of P. solenopsis.  相似文献

Nothofagus obliqua, N. dombeyi, N. alpina and N. antarctica are characteristic tree species of the temperate forests on the western slopes of the Andes with centres of distribution that differ in their temperature and moisture regimes. We tested branch wood from co-occurring specimens of these species for the inherent differences in xylem anatomy and theoretical hydraulic conductance to evaluate their resistance to drought or frost. The hydraulic conductivity of the xylem was calculated using a modified Hagen–Poiseuille equation and related to wood density. Conduit dimensions were used to predict the water potential that would cause 50 % loss of hydraulic conductivity (Ψ 50). Nothofagus alpina, which mainly grows at sites with low frost frequency, exhibited the largest conduits and the highest mean values for conduit area, fraction of conduit area in the cross-section and hydraulic conductivity, but the lowest wood density. Opposite relationships were found in the plastic N. antarctica, whose xylem seems to be least vulnerable to freezing-induced, but also to drought-induced embolism. Calculated Ψ 50 was highest (least negative) in N. alpina, indicating a relatively high susceptibility to cavitation. The xylem of the thermophilic N. obliqua and of N. dombeyi, which mainly occurs under oceanic climate, but can also survive at sporadically dry and warm sites, is not particularly adapted to periods of drought stress. Across all species, wood density was negatively correlated with the calculated hydraulic conductance. The xylem traits of N. alpina might contribute to its relatively high growth rate and facilitate its spread into forest gaps.  相似文献

Ants are among the most ecologically and economically significant biological invaders and are notoriously difficult to eradicate once established. Invasive ants are typically managed with toxic baits which are often unattractive to the target species, toxic to non-targets, and environmentally persistent. The current study evaluated a novel Trojan horse approach for managing invasive ants in natural habitats based on the use of poisoned prey. Eastern subterranean termites (Reticulitermes flavipes) were topically exposed to fipronil and presented to Asian needle ants (Pachycondyla chinensis) which are a significant invader in natural and disturbed habitats in the eastern United States. In laboratory assays, P. chinensis colonies were offered fipronil-treated termites within experimental arenas. The termites were readily attacked and consumed and results demonstrate that a single termite exposed to 25 ppm fipronil for 1 h is capable of killing 100 P. chinensis workers in 9 h. To evaluate population effects, field studies were conducted in forested areas invaded by P. chinensis. Fipronil-treated termites scattered on the forest floor provided rapid control of P. chinensis and ant densities throughout the treated plots declined by 98 ± 5 % within 28 days. I demonstrate that the poison baiting approach based on fipronil-treated termite prey is highly effective against P. chinensis and may offer an effective alternative to traditional bait treatments against other invasive ants, especially those with predatory and generalist feeding habits. Furthermore, I demonstrate that the poison baiting approach offers environmental benefits by delivering substantially less toxicant to the environment relative to current control methods which rely on commercial bait formulations. In summary, the poison baiting approach evaluated in this study appears highly suitable for controlling invasive ants and should be further tested against other invasive ants.  相似文献

Corridor design is a centripetal conservation tool to facilitate movement between fragmented patches. Increases in anthropogenic activity have caused degradation in forest connectivity, influencing animal movement to a small degree. Laljhadi-Mohana wildlife corridor (LMWC), a corridor between Shuklaphanta National Park (Nepal) and Dudhwa National Park (India) created to be used by Panthera tigris and Elephas maximus in western Nepal, is under pressure of anthropogenic change. Using current knowledge, we analyzed land cover changes (LCC) of LMWC between 2002 and 2012. We used ERDAS IMAGINE 9.2 and Arc GIS 9.2 to process satellite images, and occupancy survey to assess status of corridor. We classified land cover into dense forest, sparse forest, cultivation, water bodies, grassland, expose surfaces, and sand bank as structural attributes of the corridor. Our analysis found dense forest area was reduced by 18.35% in a decade while cultivation and sparse forest increased by 10.15% and 8.89%, respectively. Illegal forest encroachment, resource extraction, grazing pressure, invasive species, and flood were major drivers of forest change. The null occupancy model estimated the highest detection probability of Elephas maximus (0.48 ± 0.08) and the lowest of Axis axis (0.20 ± 0.08). Incorporating site covariates improved occupancy estimates of Sus scrofa (0.82), Axis axis (0.76), Elephas maximus (0.76), Boselaphus tragocamelus (0.66), and Panthera pardus (0.55). Distance to cultivation was the most influential covariate, supported by the expansion of cultivated land in the corridor. LMWC is a functional wildlife corridor despite a decline in forest cover. This decline influenced the number and detection rates of large mammals, instigating crop raiding and conflict. Mitigation measures on LCC drivers, particularly forest encroachment, can improve the functional status of LMWC and raise detection rates of large mammals in future studies.  相似文献

In North America, most Artemisia (Asteraceae) shrub species lack the ability to resprout after disturbances that remove aboveground biomass. We studied the response of one of the few resprouting Artemisia shrubs, Artemisia filifolia (sand sagebrush), to the effects of prescribed fires. We collected data on A. filifolia density and structural characteristics (height, canopy area, and canopy volume) in an A. filifolia shrubland in the southern Great Plains of North America. Our study sites included areas that had not been treated with prescribed fire, areas that had been treated with only one prescribed fire within the previous 5 years, and areas that had been treated with two prescribed fires within the previous 10 years. Our data were collected at time periods ranging from ½ to 5 years after the prescribed fires. Density of A. filifolia was not affected by one or two fires. Structural characteristics, although initially altered by prescribed fire, recovered to levels characteristic of unburned areas in 3–4 years after those fires. In contrast to most non-sprouting North American Artemisia shrub species, our research suggested that the resprouting A. filifolia is highly tolerant to the effects of fire.  相似文献

Although tree-ring chronologies of Cedrela fissilis and Cedrela angustifolia showed a common climatic signal, local conditions influence growth, suggesting that forest guidelines should be appropriate to the species and context.

Abstract

Cedrela species are highly valued because of the quality of their timber. Understanding the behaviour of each different Cedrela species and their ecology is of importance to ensuring that forest harvesting and management do not endanger the survival of natural populations. These species grow in a wide range of environmental gradients and different types of forests in Bolivia. This study used dendrochronological methods to analyse growth–precipitation relationships of two Cedrela species coming from three locations with different environmental conditions: dry Chiquitano (Concepción), Chiquitano transitional Amazonian (Guarayos), and Bolivian-Tucuman montane forests (Postrervalle). The rainy season in all locations runs from October to April and the dry season runs from May to September. Twelve Cedrela fissilis specimens were sampled from dry Chiquitano, 11 Cedrela fissilis specimens from Chiquitano transitional Amazonian, and 30 Cedrela angustifolia specimens from Bolivian-Tucuman montane forests. The samples were crossdated and exhibited a common signal between trees from three sites, despite tree rings from the Chiquitano transitional Amazonian forest being narrower and displaying blurred bands of parenchyma in the boundaries. Significant inter-series correlation was found for the C. fissilis species series from dry Chiquitano with r = 0.261 (p < 0.01) and Chiquitano transitional Amazonian forests with r = 0.284 (p < 0.01), and for Cedrela angustifolia from Bolivian-Tucuman montane forests with r = 0.374 (p < 0.01). Mean annual growth was 2.07, 1.92, and 2.82 mm year?1 at the three sites, respectively. Cedrela species from dry Chiquitano and Bolivian-Tucuman montane forests were sensitive to precipitation from October to April of the current growth year (wettest season) and to low temperatures from May to July of the current growth year (driest season). Samples from Chiquitano transitional Amazonian were more sensitive to precipitation during late rainy season (March, April, and May of the current growth year) and high temperatures during the rainy months (November–December). Growth differences between sites and species in response to climate variations and local conditions should be taken into account and handled with different forest management guidelines.

The intentionally introduced Pontogammarus robustoides is the most successful amphipod invader of Lithuanian inland waters and has become established in large lakes. Its impact on littoral invertebrate communities was studied by comparing similar habitats across lakes that harbour or are devoid of the invader. In habitats where P. robustoides is well established and numerous, it significantly reduces species richness and community diversity. Moderate pontogammarid density in habitats that can sustain the native gammarid Gammarus lacustris, however, revealed no negative impact on diversity metrics. Among the lakes studied, the benthic biomass did not differ in invaded and uninvaded habitats. The biomass of indigenous invertebrates (excluding chironomids, which exhibited high lake-specific biomass variation) was lower in the places with well-established P. robustoides. A detrimental impact was observed upon the native isopod Asellus aquaticus and a negative correlation with most of the higher taxa of native invertebrates. In the invaded lake habitats that favour P. robustoides, a change in community structure and a decrease in diversity up to twofold or more are to be expected.  相似文献

This study concerns the stand-scale palaeoecological reconstruction of the subsequent stages of late Holocene vegetation development on habitats recently covered by beech-dominated woodland in the southern Baltic region. The data, based on pollen, non-pollen palynomorphs, macrofossil and charcoal analyses from two close-lying sites, demonstrated that each of the subsequent late Holocene shifts in dominating forest communities took place because of human impact coupled with climatic events or episodic human-made disturbances. Shifts from the Tilia dominated forest to the Quercus-Corylus plant community at around 3300 bc was most probably driven by the coupled effect of climate change and human activity. Human impact was the primary driver of the final Corylus decline and concurrent major Carpinus expansion at c. 460 bc, and the Carpinus decline followed by Fagus expansion at c. ad 900. Carpinus had been lingering on the edge of a major expansion in the local forest for at least 2,500 years while Fagus had persisted in a small admixture for no fewer than 1,500 years before becoming important forest constituents. Our data illustrate the role of episodic disturbances as turning points that initiate long-term vegetation changes.  相似文献

Phylogeographic patterns of Ammopiptanthus in northwestern China were examined with internal transcribed spacer (ITS) and three chloroplast intergenic spacers (trnH–psbA, trnL–trnF, and trnS–trnG). Two ITS genotypes (a–b) and 8 chloroplast haplotypes (A–H) were detected. Both ITS genotypes and chloroplast lineages were split in two geographic regions: western Xinjiang and the Alxa Desert. This lineage split was also supported by AMOVA analysis and the Mantel test. AMOVA showed that 89.81 % of variance in Ammopiptanthus occurred between the two geographic regions, and correlation between genetic distances and geographical distances was significant (r = 0.757, p < 0.0001). All populations in western Xinjiang shared haplotype A with high frequency, and range expansion was strongly supported by negative Fu’s FS value, and mismatch distribution analysis, whereas populations in the Alxa Desert had higher genetic diversity and structure. We speculate that the cold and dry climate during the early Quaternary fragmented habitats of the species, limiting gene flow between regions, and interglacial periods most likely led to the range expansion in western Xinjiang. The low genetic diversity of Ammopiptanthus indicate a significant extinction risk, and protective measures should be taken immediately.  相似文献

The N2-fixing shrub Alnus viridis is currently encroaching on montane grasslands in the Alps as a result of reduced land management and complete abandonment. Alnus introduces large amounts of nitrogen (N) into these formerly N-poor grasslands and restricts the succession to montane forests. We studied pools and fluxes of N and the associated C pools in pastures (controls) and adjacent Alnus shrublands at two elevations (1650 versus 1950 m a.s.l.) in three valleys in the Swiss central Alps. The total N and C pools stored in 50-year-old Alnus shrubland did not exceed those in adjacent pastures with a total of approximately 610 g N m?2 in phytomass plus soil (down to 30 cm) at both elevations. In Alnus stands, reduced soil N pools balanced the gain in phytomass N pools, a likely result of a faster turnover of soil N. The soil solution under Alnus was continuously enriched with nitrate, with a total N leaching of 0.79 g N m?2 season?1 (June–October) under 50-year-old stands at both elevations and the highest flux of 1.76 g N m?2 season?1 in 25-year-old shrubland at low elevation, clearly indicating an excess of available N in Alnus shrubland. In contrast, N leaching across all pastures was close to zero (0.08 g N m?2) throughout the season. At the catchment scale, streamlet water showed increased nitrate concentrations with typical flushing peaks in spring and autumn, provided more than one fifth of the catchment area was covered by Alnus shrubs. We conclude that the expansion of Alnus rapidly converts centuries-old, N-poor grassland into N saturated shrubland, irrespective of elevation, and it reduces the C storage potential of the landscape because the Alnus dominance constrains re-establishment of a natural montane forest.  相似文献

FLOWERING LOCUS T (FT), a major effect gene, regulates flowering time in Arabidopsis. We analyzed evolutionary changes distinguishing two FT homeologous loci in B. rapa, described genetic variation in homologs isolated and reported expression pattern of FT in B. juncea. Synteny analysis confirmed presence of two FT genomic copies in B. rapa ssp. pekinensis and resolved pre-existing anomalies regarding copy number in “AA” genome. Synteny analysis of B. rapa homeologous regions CR1 (129 kb) and CR2 (232 kb) revealed differential gene fractionation and wide-spread re-arrangements. Seven genomic DNA (gDNA) variants (2.1–2.2 kb) and 10 complementary DNA (cDNA) variants (528 bp) were isolated from 6 Brassica species. The gDNA variants shared 72–99 % similarity within Brassica and 58–60 % between Arabidopsis and Brassica. FT cDNA variants shared 92–100 % similarity within Brassica and 87 % between Arabidopsis and Brassica. Phylogenetic analysis of FT gDNA, cDNA and protein sequences revealed two major clades, differentiating homologs derived from species containing shared “BB” and “CC” genomes. Phylogram based on Brassica FT gDNA differentiated homeologs derived from AA-LF (Least fractioned) and AA-MF1 (Moderately fractioned) sub-genomes. Analysis of FT expression pattern in B. juncea revealed increasing levels correlating with attainment of physiological maturity; highest levels were detected in older leaves implying conservation in spatio-temporal expression pattern vis-à-vis Arabidopsis. In conclusion, our study reveals that polyploidy in Brassicas resulted in expansion of FT gene copies with homologs charting independent evolutionary course through accumulation of mutations. However, expression domains of FT remained conserved across Brassicaceae to preserve the critical function of FT in controlling flowering time.  相似文献

Numerous termite species have been introduced outside their native ranges by human transport, and some have become invasive. The dampwood termite Zootermopsis nevadensis (Hagen), which is native to western North America, has been introduced to and become established in Kawanishi City, Hyogo Prefecture, Japan. Zootermopsis nevadensis is subdivided into two subspecies based on cuticular hydrocarbon (CHC) phenotypes: Znevadensis nevadensis and Znevadensis nuttingi (Haverty and Thorne). Here, we identified Znevadensis in Japan as hybrids between the two subspecies. Chemical analysis showed the presence of 7,15-dimethylhenicosane and 5,17-dimethylhenicosane in the CHCs of Znevadensis in Japan, corresponding to the CHC phenotype of Znnevadensis. Conversely, all mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I sequences of Znevadensis in Japan were identical to sequences from Znnuttingi and hybrids between the two subspecies from a native hybrid zone in California, USA. In addition, phylogenetic analysis showed that Znevadensis in Japan formed a clade with Znnuttingi and hybrids between the two subspecies. Our results show discordance between the chemical and genetic features of Znevadensis in Japan, indicating that individuals of Znevadensis in Japan are hybrids between the two subspecies.  相似文献
