Hand pollinations experiments with distylous Amsinckia douglasiana A. DC. (Boraginaceae) revealed that legitimate (intermorph) crosses produce more seed than self-pollinations and that self-pollinations yield more seed than illegitimate (intramorph) crosses. We tested the occurrence of cryptic incompatibility in both style-length morphs by pollinating them with a mixture of legitimate and illegitimate pollen, each homozygous for a different electrophoretically distinguishable allele of phosphoglucose isomerase. The success of intramorph pollen was greatly reduced in mixture; only about 4% of the offspring of both pins and thrums were sired by illegitimate pollen. One pin and one thrum had sufficiently high seed set that the results cannot be attributed to selective abortion of embryos. In those individuals, discrimination against illegitimate pollen must have occurred on the stigma or in the style. Based on our findings, it appears that illegitimate matings are rare in natural populations. The progeny of legitimate crosses was biased toward pins, which suggests some regulation of morph ratios independent of the style-length locus. Prezygotic discrimination against the thrum genotype or selective abortion of embryos with the thrum genotype are both possible, but selective mortality of seedlings with the thrum genotype cannot be ruled out for some families.  相似文献

After an ancestral population splits into two allopatric populations, different mutations may fix in each. When pairs of mutations are brought together in a hybrid offspring, epistasis may cause reduced fitness. Such pairs are known as Bateson–Dobzhansky–Muller (BDM) incompatibilities. A well-known model of BDM incompatibility due to Orr suggests that the fitness load on hybrids should initially accelerate, and continue to increase as the number of potentially incompatible substitutions increases (the "snowball effect"). In the gene networks model, which violates a key assumption of Orr's model (independence of fixation probabilities), the snowball effect often does not occur. Instead, we describe three possible dynamics in a constant environment: (1) Stabilizing selection can constrain two allopatric populations to remain near-perfectly compatible. (2) Despite constancy of environment, punctuated evolution may obtain; populations may experience rare adaptations asynchronously, permitting incompatibility. (3) Despite stabilizing selection, developmental system drift may permit genetic change, allowing two populations to drift in and out of compatibility. We reinterpret Orr's model in terms of genetic distance. We extend Orr's model to the finite loci case, which can limit incompatibility. Finally, we suggest that neutral evolution of gene regulation in nature, to the point of speciation, is a distinct possibility.  相似文献

Illus. 1962.—A diallel cross involving 11 self-incompatible and 3 self-compatible species of Solanum was made to study the genetic basis of interspecific incompatibility. Interspecific incompatibility was not limited to crosses in which a self-compatible species was used as the male parent onto a self-incompatible species (unilateral incompatibility). A number of crosses between self-incompatible species were incompatible. In one cross, Q vernei X verrucosum, a self-compatible species was successful as a pollen parent with a self-incompatible species. Unlike other hybrids between self-compatible and self-incompatible species, which are self-incompatible, these F1 hybrids were self-fertile, and cross-fertile among themselves and with both parents. The self-fertile S. polyadenium was cross-incompatible as a female as well as a male parent with all other species. It is suggested that the unilateral incompatibility is a property of the allele SC which originated as a consequence of one kind of breakdown of the SI gene; the SC allele produces “bare” pollen growth substances which are inactivated in an incompatible style. It is proposed that the failure of the principle of unilateral interspecific incompatibility in solanaceous species may be due to the action of alleles at the second incompatibility locus revealed in certain Mexican species. It is assumed that the South American species are selected intraspecifically only for the action of S alleles but that in certain interspecific crosses and rarely in intraspecific crosses the alleles at the second locus may be expressed, thus interfering with the usual action of S alleles. The F1 hybrids Q verrucosum (self-fertile) X simplicifolium (self-sterile) were self-incompatible at the tetraploid as well as the diploid level, and their cross-compatibility behavior was consistent with the expected activity of the SC and SI alleles of the 2 parents respectively.  相似文献

Efforts to introduce Dutch Elm Disease resistance into the American elm (Ulmus americana L.) through breeding with Asian elms has been hampered by sexual incompatibility. Controlled pollinations of Ulmus americana and the Siberian elm (Ulmus pumila L.) were studied in detail to gain insight into the nature of this incompatibility. Microscopic observations revealed that germination and early pollen tube growth were inhibited on the stigmatic surface following both intra- and interspecific incompatible pollinations. Both qualitative and quantitative differences in pollen inhibition on the stigmatic surface indicated that the inhibition may involve the action of an inhibitory substance. Detailed observations on callose deposition indicated that this β-1,3 glucose polymer may implement the inhibition.  相似文献

Gametophytes of Pteridium aquilinum can be maintained in red light as either 1- or 2-dimensional structures. The mode of growth realized in red light is dependent upon the activity of the meristem. An active meristem in a 2-dimensional structure will permit a continued development of that structure. A breakdown in meristematic activity results in filament formation. It is suggested that a group of actively dividing cells in some manner inhibits cell elongation and thus prevents filament formation in red light.  相似文献

Many insects and other arthropods harbor maternally inherited bacteria inducing "cytoplasmic incompatibility" (CI), reduced egg hatch when infected males mate with uninfected females. CI-causing infections produce a frequency-dependent reproductive advantage for infected females. However, many such infections impose fitness costs that lead to unstable equilibrium frequencies below which the infections tend to be eliminated. To understand the unstable equilibria produced by reduced lifespan or lengthened development, overlapping-generation analyses are needed. An idealized model of overlapping generations with age-independent parameters produces a simple expression showing how the unstable point depends on the population growth rate, the intensity of CI, and the infection's effects on development time, longevity, and fecundity. The interpretation of this equilibrium is complicated by age structure. Nevertheless, the unstable equilibrium provides insight into the CI-causing infections found in nature, and it can guide potential manipulations of natural populations, including those that transmit diseases, through the introduction of infections that alter life-table parameters.  相似文献

In ascomycetes vegetative incompatibility can prevent the somatic exchange of genetic material between conspecifics. It must occur frequently in natural populations, since in all species studied many vegetative compatibility groups (VCGs) are found. Using a population-genetic approach, this paper explores two possible selective explanations for the evolution of vegetative incompatibility in asexual fungi: selection by a nuclear parasitic gene, and selection by a harmful cytoplasmic element. In a deterministic model, assuming a random spatial distribution of VCGs in an infinitely sized population, it is found that neither of these forms of frequency-dependent selection can explain the large number of VCGs found in nature. The selective pressure for more VCGs disappears once a limited number of VCGs exist, because the frequency of compatible interactions decreases when the number of VCGs increases. In comparing the two selective explanations, selection by a cytoplasmic element seems a more plausible explanation than selection by a nuclear gene.  相似文献

Hybrid sterility is an important species barrier, especially in plants where hybrids can often form between divergent taxa. Here we explore how life history affects the acquisition of hybrid sterility in two groups in the sunflower family. We analyzed genetic distance and F1 pollen sterility for interspecific crosses in annual and perennial groups. We find that reproductive isolation is acquired in a steady manner and that annual species acquire hybrid sterility barriers faster than perennial species. Potential causes of the observed sterility pattern are discussed.  相似文献
