Enteroviruses survived for up to 38 days without diminishing in numbers in extended-aeration sludges maintained at 5 degrees C. In oxidation ditch sludges similarly maintained, enteroviruses survived for up to 17 days without diminishing in numbers. The pHs of the sludges in this study were well inside the pH 6 to 8 corridor in which destruction of enteroviruses by the detergents and ammonia present in sludges reportedly does not occur. Unexplained, however, was the survival of large numbers of enteroviruses in sludges at pH 3.5, a pH at which some anionic detergents commonly present in sewage are rapidly virucidal. The long survival of enteroviruses in these sludges at 5 degrees C indicates that such sludges can probably be stored under refrigeration in the laboratory for extended periods while awaiting processing without suffering significant losses in enterovirus numbers.  相似文献

The population biology of bacterial viruses: why be temperate   总被引:7,自引:0,他引:7  
A model of the interactions between populations of temperate and virulent bacteriophage with sensitive, lysogenic, and resistant bacteria is presented. In the analysis of the properties of this model, particular consideration is given to the conditions under which temperate bacteriophage can become established and will be maintained in bacterial populations. The effects of the presence of resistant bacteria and virulent phage on these "existence" conditions for temperate viruses are considered. It is demonstrated that under broad conditions temperate phage will be maintained in bacterial populations and will coexist with virulent phage. Extrapolating from this formal consideration of the population biology of temperate bacteriophage, a number of hypotheses for the conditions under which temperate, rather than virulent, modes of phage reproduction are to be anticipated and the nature of the selective pressures leading to the evolution and persistence of this "benign" type of bacterial virus are reviewed and critically evaluated. Two hypotheses for the "advantages of temperance" are championed: (1) As a consequence of the allelopathic effects of diffusing phage, in physically structured habitats, lysogenic colonies are able to sequester resources and, in that way, have an advantage when competing with sensitive nonlysogens. (2) Lysogeny is an adaptation for phage to maintain their populations in "hard times," when the host bacterial density oscillates below that necessary for phage to be maintained by lytic infection alone.  相似文献

Mean activity coefficients of different potassium salts KX (X = F-, Cl-, Br-, I-, NO3-, SCN-) have been measured in concentrated isoionic bovine serum albumin (BSA) solutions, by use of the EMF method with ion-exchange membrane electrodes. These solutions may be regarded as simple model systems for the cytoplasm of living cells as far as the influence of the macromolecular component on the activity coefficients of the salts is concerned. Two series of measurements have been carried out: (a) varying the amount of salt from 0.01 to 0.5 molal and maintaining the BSA concentration constant at 20 wt% and (b) varying the protein concentration up to 25 wt% and keeping the salt concentration constant at 0.1 molal. For all salts studied, the mean activity coefficients in the protein-salt solutions increase as the salt concentration rises, when the protein concentration is maintained constant. In the series of measurements (b) the activity coefficients of all salts change linearly with the protein concentration. Marked qualitative differences, however, were observed depending on the anion species, which could be interpreted in terms of specific ion binding of X- to the protein molecule. By taking into account BSA-bound 'non-solvent' water, the results were analyzed in terms of numbers of anions bound per BSA molecule. Comparison with the results of Scatchard, obtained at low protein concentrations, showed only a very small electrostatic effect of the BSA-(X-)v polyions on the activity coefficient of the salts at higher protein and salt concentrations.  相似文献

Cultivation of Staphylococcus 209-P and Micrococcus lysodeikticus cells on media containing new antibacterial preparations--iodide and trifluoroacetate derivatives of benzohydrothiochromylium resulted in a remarkable lesion of the membrane respiratory apparatus, i.e. the amounts of membrane polypeptides, the specific concentration of cytochromes, the activities of reductases and oxidases--NADH, malate and lactate decreased.
