Whole body content of androgen (testosterone + 5 alpha-dihydrotestosterone) was invariably higher in male than in female rat pups killed 1 or 3 h after natural delivery, whereas androgen content was equivalent in males and females killed immediately or 6, 12, and 24 h after birth. Testicular content of androgen was significantly elevated in males killed 1 and 24 h after birth, compared with levels in males killed immediately, or 3, 6, and 12 h after birth. Thus, heightened testicular androgen content was only initially associated with increased systemic levels of androgen in males during the immediate postpartum period. A second study assessed the possibility that the body's clearance (i.e., metabolism plus excretion) of testosterone is lower in newborn rats upon separation from the placental circulation than in slightly older pups. Rats of both sexes killed 1 and 3 h after s.c. injection of [3H] testosterone had significantly higher plasma concentrations of [3H] testosterone as well as several 5 alpha-reduced androgens (5 alpha-dihydrotestosterone, 3 alpha-androstanediol, and androsterone) when injections were given within minutes as opposed to 24 h after birth. This suggests that in both sexes the clearance of testosterone is slower immediately after birth than at later ages. This phenomenon together with a brief postnatal elevation in the testicular synthesis and secretion of testosterone may explain the temporary rise in circulating androgen concentrations that occurs in the newborn male rat.  相似文献

Male and female gray short-tailed opossums were gonadectomized (GDX), or treated with the estrogen receptor antagonist tamoxifen citrate (TX), or corn oil (OIL) (control) during the 5th postnatal week, a time period equivalent to the 3rd postnatal week in rats and associated with high levels of circulating gonadal hormones and neural aromatase activity in this marsupial species. In adulthood following gonadectomy (for animals not previously gonadectomized) and replacement therapy with estradiol or testosterone, GDX males showed less male-typical scent marking and had shorter phalluses than OIL and TX males. Following replacement therapy with estradiol, GDX females were more likely to fight with and less likely to mate with stimulus males than TX females; OIL females were intermediate in these measures. Along with previous findings, these results suggest that gonadal hormones act over an extended postnatal period to organize sexually dimorphic behavior and morphology in male gray opossums and may have some effect on the organization of aggressive behavior in females of this species.  相似文献

Three experiments were performed to analyze the time course of demasculinization in the Japanese quail and to test the activating and organizing effects of estradiol (E2) in adult sexually active birds. In Experiment 1, males and females were castrated at the age of 1 day or 1, 2, 4, and 6 weeks and treated as adults with testosterone (T). The age of castration had no effect on behavior and morphology in males. Plasma gonadotrophins (LH and FSH) were, however, higher in males castrated at or before than in those castrated after 2 weeks of age. This suggests that postnatal testicular secretions have organizing effects on the pituitary activity. Females which were castrated before 1 week of age were less sensitive to the activating effects of T than males, but were not fully demasculinized. The demasculinization of different reproductive characteristics such as male sexual behavior, cloacal gland size, and weight of the syringeal muscles is achieved in females at different times posthatching. In Experiment 2, castration of male and female quail at the ages of 4 days or 4 weeks confirmed that postnatal ovarian secretions contribute to the full behavioral and morphological demasculinization of females. It is easier to elicit mounting in T-treated females when they are tested in their home cage instead of a test arena. This difference was not observed in males. During Experiment 3, it was impossible to demasculinize sexually active adult males or females by treatment with Silastic implants of E2. E2 did not maintain sexual behavior in ovariectomized females showing male sexual behavior when treated with T but maintained the behavior in males.  相似文献

Morphological and behavioural traits which improve agonistic power are subject to intrasexual selection and, at the proximate level, are influenced by circulating androgens. Because intrasexual selection in mammals is more intense among males, they typically dominate females. Female social dominance is therefore unexpected and, indeed, rare. Ring-tailed lemurs (Lemur catta) are sexually monomorphic primates in which all adult females dominate all males. The goal of our study was to test the prediction that female dominance in this species is associated with high androgen levels. Using two captive groups, we collected data on agonistic behaviour and non-invasively assessed their androgen concentrations in faeces and saliva by enzyme immunoassay. We found that adult female L. catta do not have higher androgen levels than males. However, during the mating season there was a twofold increase in both the androgen levels and conflict rates among females. This seasonal increase in their androgen levels was probably not due to a general increase in ovarian hormone production because those females showing the strongest signs of follicular development tended to have low androgen concentrations. At the individual level neither the individual aggression rates nor the proportion of same-sexed individuals dominated were correlated with their androgen levels. We conclude that female dominance in ring-tailed lemurs is neither based on physical superiority nor on high androgen levels and that it is equally important to study male subordination and prenatal brain priming effects for a complete understanding of this phenomenon.  相似文献

The objective of the present study was to investigate the effect of the time of administration of androgen, during the neonatal period, on the development of masculine copulatory behavior in female rats. In addition, the influence of androgen, administered neonatally, on the development of penile reflexes and cytoplasmic androgen receptor levels in the hypothalamic-preoptic area (HPOA) was examined. Female rats were injected with 0.5 mg testosterone propionate (TP) at either 1, 8, or 24 hr after birth and again 24 hr after the first injection. Fifty percent of the females treated with TP at 1 and 8 hr after birth displayed the ejaculatory response when tested in adulthood. In contrast, 93 and 87.5% of oil-treated males and females, respectively, which were androgenized at 24 hr after birth exhibited this response. The results indicate that a considerable amount of masculinization occurs postnatally in the rat. However, none of the androgenized females displayed any penile reflexes even when tested following the display of an ejaculatory response. HPOA androgen receptor levels were somewhat higher in the oil-treated females than in males but were not correlated with the ability to exhibit ejaculation patterns.  相似文献

We measured fecal androgen (T+DHT) and estradiol (E2) levels in female northern muriquis (Brachyteles hypoxanthus) at the Esta??o Biológica de Caratinga/RPPN Feliciano Miguel Abdala, Minas Gerais, Brazil, to evaluate the hormonal bases underlying individual variation in the resumption of cycling and conception. We found that androgen levels were significantly lower in females than in males, and that there were no consistent patterns in female androgen levels across precycling or cycling conditions. Females that resumed cycling earlier in the study (weeks 4-8) had higher precycling E2 levels and correspondingly lower precycling androgen/E2 ratios than females that resumed cycling later (weeks 12-16). There were no differences in female precycling androgen levels, but cycling females that conceived during or immediately after the study period had lower androgen levels and threefold higher E2 peaks than the one cycling female that failed to conceive. These results suggest that minimum E2 thresholds are necessary for both the resumption of ovarian cycling and conception. Individual variation in these components of fertility may be regulated by differences in E2 levels, which affect androgen/E2 ratios, rather than by androgen levels per se. Further research into the relative concentrations of T vs. DHT will be necessary to fully evaluate whether androgens affect cycling and conception in this species.  相似文献

Differentiation of the mammalian gonad is thought to be constitutive, occurring independently of and not significantly altered by gonadal hormones. In this study, estradiol benzoate (EB) and testosterone propionate (TP) were administered to newborn gray opossums (Monodelphis domestica) during the first week after birth. It was found that males and females treated with TP and females treated with EB developed normally. In males treated with EB on both Day 1 and Day 3 of postnatal life, gonads did not differentiate and internal and external genitalia were feminine. These findings are discussed with respect to current theories of mammalian sexual differentiation.  相似文献

The whole-body content of androgen (testosterone + 5 alpha-dihydrotestosterone) was significantly higher on Fetal Days 18 and 19 in male than in female rats; androgen content was equivalent in the two sexes at other fetal ages, including Days 16, 17, 20, and 21, and prior to parturition on Fetal Day 22. These results partially corroborate previous data of Weisz and Ward (Endocrinology 1980; 106:306-316), who measured testosterone in pooled plasma from rat fetuses and suggest that androgens contribute to masculine brain sexual differentiation only briefly during fetal life. No significant differences in whole-body androgen content were observed among groups of females situated in utero between 0, 1, or 2 males on each side (contiguous male model) or among groups of females with 0, 1, or 2 or more males located caudally (on the cervical side) in the same uterine horn, regardless of whether combined data from Fetal Days 17-22 or only Fetal Days 18 and 19 were considered. These results provide no evidence that androgens from males reach female fetuses in the same uterine horn.  相似文献

Natal dispersal, the permanent departure of an individual from its birth site, is sex biased in most mammals, with males dispersing at higher rates or over greater distances than do female conspecifics. Because dispersal movements may be energetically expensive, their occurrence should theoretically be influenced by energy availability. Moreover, the male bias typical of mammalian dispersal suggests that this behavior might be mediated by gonadal androgens. Using free-living Belding's ground squirrels (Spermophilus beldingi) as subjects, we provisioned juveniles with extra food to evaluate energetic influences on male dispersal behavior. Provisioning increased body mass and body fat of juvenile males and caused them to disperse at younger ages, but did not affect blood glucose levels. Dispersing males were fatter than same-aged males that had not yet dispersed. Moreover, body fat of provisioned and unprovisioned males did not differ when evaluated relative to the week during which they dispersed, suggesting that there may be a fat threshold for dispersal. In a second experiment, we measured plasma concentrations of testosterone (T) in provisioned and unprovisioned, free-living juveniles to evaluate the hypothesis that male dispersal behavior is activated by concurrent high levels of T. We observed no increase in plasma T associated with dispersal by juvenile males, no sex differences in circulating T among juveniles, and no effects of food provisioning on juvenile T levels. In a third experiment with free-living S. beldingi, we concurrently altered early androgen exposure by treating females with T at birth and manipulated energy availability by food provisioning. Perinatal T-treatment increased the likelihood of dispersal among juvenile females. Provisioning increased body mass and body fat of juveniles and caused males and T-treated females to disperse at significantly younger ages than either their unprovisioned counterparts or the few provisioned control females that dispersed. These results suggest that early T exposure in this species determines the probability of dispersal, whereas the amount of energy an individual has stored as fat strongly influences the timing of dispersal. Early T exposure also appears to cause the timing of dispersal to respond to energy availability and body fat in a male-typical way, possibly by organizing masculine mass and fat thresholds for dispersal.  相似文献

The present study was conducted to measure the levels of estrogen and androgen receptors (ER and AR, receptively) simultaneously in the anterior pituitary (AP), and various brain regions from adult male and proestrous female hamsters. Medial preoptic area (MPOA), medial basal hypothalamus (MBH), lateral hypothalamus (LH), medial forebrain bundle (MFB), and amygdala (AMG) were identified and removed from 200-microns frozen brain sections by the Palkovits punch-out technique. ER and AR were determined by the in vitro binding assay using [3H]-estradiol and [3H]-methyltrienolone as the binding ligands. In males, high levels of AR were found in the MPOA, MBH, and AP. In females, the MPOA, MBH, LH, and AP contained high levels of ER. The males exhibited significantly higher levels of AR than females in the MPOA, MBH, and LH, whereas the ER levels in these areas were higher in females. In males, ER and AR contents in the AP were higher, but the contents in the AMG were lower as compared to those of females. The calculated ER/AR ratio in MPOA, MBH, and LH were lowest in males. On the contrary, the ratio in these areas were highest in females. These data suggest that sex differences in response to estrogen and androgen may in part be due to sex differences in ER and AR contents in specific brain regions.  相似文献

Though cooperative behavior has long been a focus of evolutionary biology, the proximate hormonal mechanisms underlying cooperative interactions remain poorly understood. Lance-tailed manakins (Chiroxiphia lanceolata) are tropical passerines that form long-term male-male partnerships and cooperate in paired male courtship displays. To elucidate patterns of natural hormonal variation in relation to cooperation and reproductive behavior, we examined circulating androgen levels of male lance-tailed manakins in relation to social status, display behavior, and time of year. We found significantly higher circulating androgen levels in alpha-ranked (breeding) males compared to non-alpha adult males in the population. Beta males, which participated in courtship displays but did not copulate, had androgen levels indistinguishable from those of unpaired adult males that never displayed for females, suggesting that an elevated concentration of plasma testosterone in tropical lekking birds may be associated primarily with copulatory behavior or other status-specific traits, and not the performance of courtship display. Androgens decreased throughout the breeding season for males of all status categories. Interestingly, alphas that displayed for females in the observation session prior to sampling had lower androgen levels than alphas that did not display for females. This pattern may result from female discrimination against alpha males at display areas with high levels of social conflict among males, as social disruption is linked to elevated testosterone in many species. However, recent change of a display partner was not related to alpha androgen levels. We discuss alternative explanations and the possible implications of these results, and generate several testable predictions for future investigations.  相似文献

Exposure to male pheromones is associated with the activation of vaginal estrus in gray short-tailed opossums. The effects of such exposure on peripheral plasma estradiol-17 beta (E) levels in this marsupial species were examined in this study. Mean E levels of 27.8 pg/ml +/- 4.4 in diestrous females living in a room containing only females were similar to those seen in other marsupials. Direct naso/oral exposure to pheromonal cues provided by males resulted in vaginal estrus in 75% of these females within 4 11 days. None of the females exposed to clean cages came into vaginal estrus. Animals that were in estrus at the time of blood sampling or came into estrus over the experimental period had significantly higher E levels (58.1 +/- 12.6 pg/ml) than females in the pheromone-exposed and control groups that did not come into estrus (23.3 +/- 8.2 pg/ml). These findings are discussed with respect to other marsupial and eutherian species.  相似文献

Although gender differences exist in cardiovascular endothelial function, it remains unclear whether such differences are also seen in small intestinal endothelial function. To determine this, untreated male, age-matched proestrus female, castrated male, and 17beta-estradiol (E2)-treated noncastrated male rats were studied. Dose response curves to ACh and nitroglycerin (NTG) were determined by measuring changes in perfusion pressure by using an isolated small intestinal perfusion model. Endothelium-derived nitric oxide (NO) production/release was indirectly determined by the ability of intact endothelium to suppress serotonin (10(-5) M)-induced perfusion pressure changes. Intestinal tissue levels of NO were also measured. Moreover, plasma levels of androgen and E2 were determined and correlated with ACh (10(-8) M)-induced perfusion pressure reductions. ACh-induced intestinal perfusion pressure reductions in proestrus females, castrated males, and E2-treated noncastrated males were significantly higher than in untreated males. NTG-induced perfusion pressure reductions were not significantly different among groups. Perfusion pressures after administration of serotonin (10(-5) M) and intestinal tissue levels of NO in proestrus females, castrated males, and E2-treated noncastrated males were also significantly higher than in untreated males. Plasma androgen levels in proestrus females, castrated males, and in E2-treated noncastrated males were significantly lower compared with untreated males. There was a positive correlation between plasma androgen and ACh-reduced perfusion pressure; however, E2 levels did not show a similar relationship. Thus androgens appear to play an inhibitory role in small intestinal endothelial function. These properties in male vessels can be modulated by decreasing the level of circulating androgens or by E2 treatment.  相似文献

The sources of cues necessary for elicitation of androgen surges and sexual behavior in male golden hamsters (Mesocricetus auratus) were investigated. Circulating androgen levels were measured in males after interactions with other males or several types of estrous females: intact females, vaginectomized females, or vaginectomized females scented with vaginal secretions. All groups of males that interacted with estrous females demonstrated significant elevations in androgens whereas those that interacted with other males did not. Thus, the presence of vaginal secretions is not necessary for the elicitation of androgen surges in sexually experienced male hamsters. Individual differences in sexual performance were not correlated with the degree of change in androgen levels, suggesting that such hormonal responses are not graded but are all-or-none. Housing males in isolation from females did not alter either baseline androgen levels or the magnitude of androgen responses caused by interactions with females.  相似文献

To better define the involvement of gonadal hormones in the sex differences observed in experimental visceral pain, we administered antagonists of estrogen receptors (ICI 182,780 [ICI]) or androgen receptors (Flutamide [FLU]) to adult male and female rats suffering from artificial ureteral calculosis. Subjects were divided into groups and treated with one of the substances (ICI, FLU) or sweet almond oil (OIL, vehicle) for 5 days, starting 2 days before surgery. On day 3, animals underwent surgery, with half receiving an artificial calculosis (Stone) and half only a sham procedure. The animals' behavior (number and duration of ureteral crises) and blood hormone levels (estradiol and testosterone) were determined in all groups. In OIL-treated rats the number and duration of crises were higher in females than in males. The administration of ICI or FLU resulted in hormonal effects in males and behavioral effects in females. In males ICI treatment increased estradiol plasma levels and FLU increased testosterone plasma levels; in females ICI and FLU treatments both decreased the number and duration of the ureteral crises. These results, confirming previous findings of higher sensitivity of females than males to urinary tract pain, showed the modulatory effects of estrogen and androgen antagonists on the behavioral responses induced by pain but only in females.  相似文献

Serum and temporal gland secretions (TGS) were obtained from mature wild African (Loxodonta africana) and captive Asian elephants (Elephas maximus). Samples were obtained from five cows and eight bulls culled for management purposes in Kruger National Park, South Africa, and from four females and two males residing at the Washington Park Zoo, Portland, Oregon. Our purpose was to describe the levels of the androgens, testosterone (T), and dihydrotestosterone (DHT), and to correlate these observations with sex, species and behavioral status. Male-female differences in serum T were pronounced in the Asian species, whereas male and female concentrations overlapped in the African elephant serum. Serum T concentrations in African females were greater than in Asian females. Serum DHT reflected T levels, except that the striking elevation of testosterone in Asian bulls during musth was not paralleled by equal increases in DHT levels. A species difference observed among males was higher serum T levels in nonmusth Asian bulls (1.84-5.35 ng/ml) compared to the levels in African bulls (0.38-0.68 ng/ml), except for one dominant African bull (6.64 ng/ml). This single African value was still considerably lower than the serum T values of the Asian males during musth. These musth values were the highest serum androgen concentrations: T was between 19 and 40 ng/ml (average 26.10 ng/ml). The TSG values of T and DHT were much higher than serum levels except in the Asian female. T/DHT ratios in TGS were more similar than in serum. One dominant African bull had a T TGS value of 78 ng/ml, which was much higher than the rest of the African males or females, but considerably lower than as Asian bull in musth (547 ng/ml). It seems apparent that a change in androgen status as reflected in serum and TGS levels of T and DHT precedes or is concomitant with overt alteration in behavior in the Asian male. The temporal gland appears to actively concentrate androgens in both African males and females, but in the Asian male the gland secretes only during musth when the greatest concentration of both T and DHT were observed. The apparent difference in the degree of temporal gland secretory activity between the two species suggests a more specific communicative function within the Asian male.  相似文献

Serum levels of luteinizing hormone (LH), testosterone, dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate (DHAS), androstenedione and cortisol were determined in multiple samples from 86 sooty mangabeys of varying ages (0-17 years). Testosterone, androstenedione, DHAS and cortisol were measured by radioimmunoassay; LH was determined by in vitro bioassay. Serum LH concentrations were elevated in neonates (less than 6 months) and in animals older than 72 months of age. The higher LH levels were associated with increased circulating concentrations of testosterone in males but not females. The pubertal rise in serum testosterone at approximately 55-60 months of age in males was coincident with rapid body growth. No pubertal growth spurt was observed in females. Serum levels of androstenedione and DHAS were highest during early postnatal life (less than 6 months) with androstenedione exceeding 600 ng/dl in males and 250 micrograms/dl in females, but declined rapidly in both sexes to a baseline of 150 ng/dl by 19 months of age. Serum androstenedione did not fluctuate significantly in adult animals. The pattern of age-related changes in serum DHAS paralleled those of serum androstenedione, whereas serum cortisol values did not change significantly with age. Developmental changes in serum LH, testosterone and body weight suggest that the sooty mangabey matures substantially later than the rhesus monkey. The pattern of serum gonadal and adrenal steroids during sexual maturation is similar to that seen in the baboon with no evidence of an adrenarche.  相似文献

Differences in erythrocyte distribution on Ficoll-Sodium Metrizoate discontinuous density gradient were evaluated between adult males and females. Testosterone and androstenedione plasma levels were tested in males, oestradiol, progesterone and prolactin in both males and females. Female group showed a much higher proportion of lighter younger erythrocytes than males, while males showed higher proportion of denser older cells. Positive correlation was found between young cell percent and oestradiol level, both in males and females, but no correlation was found with androgen hormones.  相似文献

Sexual differentiation of the brain has traditionally been thought to be driven by gonadal hormones, particularly testosterone (T). Recent studies in songbirds and other species have indicated that non-gonadal sex steroids may also be important. For example, dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) - a sex steroid precursor that can be synthesized in the adrenal glands and/or brain - can be converted into active sex steroids, such as 17β-estradiol (E2), within the brain. Here, we examine plasma DHEA and E2 levels in wild developing European starlings (Sturnus vulgaris), from hatch (P0) to fledging (P20). Blood samples were collected from either the brachial vein (n = 143) or the jugular vein (n = 129). In songbirds, jugular plasma is enriched with neurally-synthesized steroids and, therefore, jugular plasma is an indirect measure of the neural steroidal milieu. Interestingly, brachial DHEA levels were higher in males than females at P4. In contrast, jugular DHEA levels were higher in females than males at P0 and P10. Brachial E2 levels were higher in males than females at P6. Surprisingly, jugular E2 levels were not high and showed no sex differences. Also, we calculated the difference between brachial and jugular steroid levels. At several ages, jugular steroid levels were lower than brachial levels, particularly in males, suggesting greater neural metabolism of circulating DHEA and E2 in males than females. At a few ages, jugular steroid levels were higher than brachial levels, suggesting neural secretion of DHEA or E2 into the general circulation. Taken together, these data suggest that DHEA may play a role in brain sexual differentiation in songbirds.  相似文献
