Over the past 20 yr, recurrent late-summer mortality of dabbling ducks in southern Québec has been attributed to the digenean parasite Cyathocotyle bushiensis. This study attempted to determine whether this parasite was still implicated in the epizootics, and examined aspects of the ecology of the parasite in the definitive host. Comparison of prevalence and mean intensity of infection of all species of Digenea between salvaged carcasses and hunter-shot ducks revealed that C. bushiensis and a second digenean Sphaeridiotrema globulus were both significantly more prevalent in salvaged ducks. Mean intensity of infection was consistently higher for S. globulus in the salvaged carcasses than in hunter-shot ducks. These data provide strong circumstantial support for the hypothesis that C. bushiensis continues to contribute to the annual mortality, but also strongly suggest that S. globulus may be involved. Comparison of the relative numbers of each species of duck between the salvaged carcass sample and the hunter-shot sample revealed that blue-winged teal (Anas discors) occurred significantly more frequently in the salvaged carcass sample whereas wood ducks (Aix sponsa) were common in the hunter-shot sample but were never found in the salvaged carcass sample. A comparison of susceptibility to experimental infection with C. bushiensis revealed that mallards (Anas platyrhynchos), black ducks (Anas rubripes), blue-winged teal, pintail (Anas acuta) and lesser scaup (Aythya affinis) had similar susceptibilities but that wood ducks were significantly less susceptible to infection. Experimental infections also showed that age of mallards significantly influenced the number of parasites obtained 7 days postinfection; ducklings were most heavily infected. Significant differences were detected in the gross pathology caused by C. bushiensis among duck species. Data obtained from sentinel ducks placed in the field for 24 hr revealed that transmission of both C. bushiensis and S. globulus occurs at least between mid-May and mid-September and that large, potentially lethal, infections can be acquired in as little as 24 hr. Finally evidence is presented to suggest that ducks acquire resistance to challenge infections of C. bushiensis.  相似文献

Recent repeated isolation of H14 hemagglutinin subtype influenza A viruses (IAVs) in the New World waterfowl provides evidence to suggest that host and/or geographic ranges for viruses of this subtype may be expanding. In this study, we used genomic analyses to gain inference on the origin and evolution of H14 viruses in New World waterfowl and conducted an experimental challenge study in mallards (Anas platyrhynchos) to evaluate pathogenicity, viral replication, and transmissibility of a representative viral strain in a natural host species. Genomic characterization of H14 subtype IAVs isolated from New World waterfowl, including three isolates sequenced specifically for this study, revealed high nucleotide identity among individual gene segments (e.g. ≥95% shared identity among H14 HA gene segments). In contrast, lower shared identity was observed among internal gene segments. Furthermore, multiple neuraminidase subtypes were observed for H14 IAVs isolated in the New World. Gene segments of H14 viruses isolated after 2010 shared ancestral genetic lineages with IAVs isolated from wild birds throughout North America. Thus, genomic characterization provided evidence for viral evolution in New World waterfowl through genetic drift and genetic shift since purported introduction from Eurasia. In the challenge study, no clinical disease or lesions were observed among mallards experimentally inoculated with A/blue-winged teal/Texas/AI13-1028/2013(H14N5) or exposed via contact with infected birds. Titers of viral shedding for mallards challenged with the H14N5 IAV were highest at two days post-inoculation (DPI); however shedding was detected up to nine DPI using cloacal swabs. The distribution of viral antigen among mallards infected with H14N5 IAV was largely restricted to enterocytes lining the villi in the lower intestinal tract and in the epithelium of the bursa of Fabricius. Characterization of the infectivity of A/blue-winged teal/Texas/AI13-1028/2013(H14N5) in mallards provides support for similarities in viral replication and shedding as compared to previously described waterfowl-adapted, low pathogenic IAV strains in ducks.  相似文献

Four-week-old gnotobiotic and conventional ducks were inoculated orally with duck plague virus. Both groups of ducks died on the third and fourth day after inoculation. Gross and microscopic lesions of duck plague were similar in gnotobiotic and conventional ducks, indicating the synergistic action of species of Salmonella and Pasteurella was not essential for development of lesions.  相似文献

Duck plague was diagnosed on the basis of pathology and virus isolation in a wild female mallard Anas platyrhynchos found dead near Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. Day-old Pekin ducklings and one of two adult mallards died with lesions typical of duck plague following inoculation of tissue from the wild bird. This is believed to be the only reported case of duck plague in a wild bird since a major outbreak occurred in South Dakota in 1973, and the fourth such report in North America.  相似文献

Cloacal swabs were collected from teal (Anas crecca, Anas cyanoptera, Anas discors), mottled duck (Anas fulvigula) and northern pintail (Anas acuta) in Brazoria County, Texas, USA, during February 2001, mottled ducks during August 2001, and blue-winged teal (A. discors) during February 2002. Prevalence of avian influenza virus (AIV) infections during each sampling period were 11, 0, and 15%, respectively. The hemagglutinin (H) subtypes H2 and H7 were detected in both years, while the H8 subtype was detected in 2001 and the H1 subtype was detected in 2002. Avian paramyxovirus type 1 (APMV-1) was isolated from 13% of mottled ducks sampled in August 2001 and 30.7% of teal in February 2002. The season of isolation of both viruses and the majority of the AIV subtypes detected in this study are not typical based on previous reports of these viruses from North American ducks.  相似文献

Competition between large-bodied fish and waterbirds for aquatic invertebrates is well documented in oligotrophic lakes. Recent evidence suggests that small-bodied fish that colonize eutrophic, hypoxia-prone wetlands such as prairie potholes can also reduce aquatic invertebrates, but the effects of these reductions on breeding waterbirds have so far not been directly documented. We added brook stickleback (Culaea inconstans) and fathead minnow (Pimephales promelas) to a fishless wetland in Aspen Parkland potholes in central Alberta, Canada. We monitored invertebrate biomasses and the foraging effort of blue-winged teal (Anas discors) and red-necked grebe (Podiceps grisegena) before and after the addition, relative to reference wetlands with and without fish. Fish reduced the biomass of gastropod prey of blue-winged teal, and teals increased foraging effort when fish were added. When the fish failed to overwinter due to hypoxic conditions, gastropod biomass increased, but teal foraging effort did not return to pre-treatment levels. Amphipods and chironomids increased following fish addition, possibly due to indirect positive effects of fish. Red-necked grebes did not exhibit any changes in foraging effort as a result of the fish addition or the subsequent fish extirpation. Grebes in Aspen Parkland appear to treat fish and invertebrates as equivalent prey. This study suggests that small-bodied fish in eutrophic systems can reduce some important invertebrate prey and change foraging behaviour of blue-winged teal and other waterbirds that rely on those invertebrates. Land-use practices that encourage survival of colonizing fish through drought years in Aspen Parkland wetlands, such as wetland consolidation, should not be encouraged.  相似文献

Twenty-four 10-day-old, artificially reared, coccidia-free goslings (Anser cygnoides var. domestica) were inoculated orally with 1.0x10(5)-1.0x10(6) sporulated oocysts of Eimeria nocens, and killed at intervals from 30 to 336 hr postinoculation (PI). Parts of the visceral organs, including intestines, kidney, liver, gallbladder, and spleen from inoculated goslings, were fixed and sectioned. The life cycle of E. nocens and histologic changes during infection were examined microscopically. The results showed that at least 3 generations of meronts developed in the endogenous stage of the life cycle of E. nocens. Two types of meronts were found. The first completed maturation at 54 to 78 hr PI. These meronts were the first generation, with each forming about 12 merozoites. The second completed maturation at 102 to 240 hr PI. These meronts were the second or third generations, with each meront forming about 24 merozoites. Development of gamonts began at about 198 hr after infection. The prepatent period was 9 days and discharge of oocysts continued for 4 days. Sporulation of oocysts occurred in 60-72 hr at 25 C. Eimeria nocens invaded the posterior jejunum, ileum, caecum, rectum, and cloaca. Developmental stages were localized within the epithelial cells of villi and crypts, and in lamina propria. Marked histological changes, including desquamation and necrosis of intestinal epithelium, submucosal edema, hemorrhages, infiltration of inflammatory cells, and villous atrophy, were seen during the periods of late merogony, gamogony, and oocyst shedding. They were most pronounced in the ileum and the regions nearby. The infected goslings showed severe diarrhea, bloody feces, anorexia, emaciation, and even death, suggesting that E. nocens is highly pathogenic for goslings.  相似文献

The relative susceptibilities of C57BL/6NCR and BALB/cANNCR mice, F344/NCR rats, 2/NCR guineapigs and CR:RGH Syrian hamsters to Bacillus piliformis infection were determined by orally inoculating 20 weanling females from each species with suspensions of B. piliformis spores. Animals from each group were sequentially necropsied over 2 week periods to document the lesions produced. No significant gross or microscopic lesions were observed in the BALB mice or the Fischer rats. Gross and microscopic lesions were observed in the livers and intestines of many guineapigs and hamsters killed 3-14 days after inoculation. A large lesion was observed in the left cardiac ventricle of one C57BL mouse 10 days after inoculation. Warthin-Starry silver-stained tissue sections revealed clusters of B. piliformis within the cytoplasm of intestinal epithelial cells, smooth muscle cells, hepatocytes and myocytes bordering foci of necrosis in the intestines, liver and heart.  相似文献

Beans inoculated with tobacco necrosis virus were kept in the dark at different temperatures for 1 hr. before and 1 hr. after inoculation; in this experiment the number of lesions increased with temperature over the range 55–82° F.
The effect of 30 min. periods of darkness before or after inoculation depended on the time of day, the number of local lesions usually being decreased. Prolonging the night period before inoculation sometimes increased the number of lesions.
Light appeared to be more important than temperature in controlling the daily variation in susceptibility. However, in a test over a 30 hr. period this variation continued even when plants were placed under constant conditions before and after inoculation.
When plants that had been kept in the dark were exposed to light of about 800 f.c. intensity for 1 min. immediately before inoculation the number of local lesions was doubled.  相似文献

Waterfowl and limnological data were monitored on Waterfowl Production Area (WPA) wetlands in northwestern Wisconsin over a 6-yr period (1983–88) to determine the impact of macroinvertebrates and macrophytes on waterfowl utilization. Interrelationships between limnological conditions and Waterfowl Breeding Pair Densities (BPDs reported as pairs/ha water surface) were analyzed using correlation and general linear model analysis techniques.Annual changes in waterfowl BPDs differed between wetlands according to differences in the structure of macrophyte communities and basin morphometry. The strength of associations differed between the two dominant waterfowl species. In a wetland dominated by dense stands of submersed vegetation, annual fluctuations in blue-winged teal (Anas discors) BPDs corresponded directly with changes in macrophyte biomass, but not with changes in macroinvertebrate density. In a nearby less densely vegetated wetland of similar water chemistry and trophic status, fluctuations in teal BPDs corresponded directly with changes in macroinvertebrate density, but not with changes in macrophyte biomass. These associations occurred despite a significant positive correlation between macroinvertebrates and macrophyte biomass in the latter habitat. Annual fluctuations in mallard (Anas platyrhynchos) BPDs were not correlated significantly with either macrophyte biomass or macroinvertebrate density in either wetland.  相似文献

Cloacal and tracheal swabs were collected from 1,409 hunter-killed ducks in Cameron Parish, Louisiana, during the 1986 and 1987 waterfowl seasons. Thirty avian paramyxoviruses (PMV's) were isolated from 605 blue-winged teal (Anas discors), 75 mottled ducks (A. fulvigula), 375 gadwalls (A. strepera), 334 green-winged teal (A. crecca), and 20 mallards (A. platyrhynchos). Prevalence of PMV decreased (P = 0.042) from September (4%) through November (2%) to December and January (1%). Juveniles had a higher prevalence of PMV (P less than 0.0001) than adults. An isolate from resident mottled ducks documents transmission of PMV's on the coastal wintering areas of Louisiana. The four serotypes isolated, PMV-1, PMV-4, PMV-6, and PMV-8, were typical of PMV's commonly associated with free-living waterfowl.  相似文献

Germ-free (GF)-ICR mice were shown to be less susceptible to oral inoculation with a pathogenic strain of Escherichia coli (E. coli 0115a, c: K(B)) than GF-CF#1 mice. In GF-CF#1 mice a large number of organisms were recovered from the intestinal wall from the cecum to the rectum 3 to 7 days after inoculation. Unlike those in GF-CF#1 mice, lesions in GF-ICR mice were localized in a part of the cecum and organisms were recovered only from the cecal wall and rarely from organs other than those of the alimentary tract. In both strains of mice, however, organisms were recovered in large number from the intestinal contents. Histopathology and immunofluorescence revealed organisms closely attached to the surface of the cecum, colon and rectal epithelia in GF-CF#1 mice but only in a part of the cecal epithelium in GF-ICR mice. After being in contact with conventional CF#1 mice for 21 days and then inoculated orally with the pathogenic E. coli, ex-GF-CF#1 mice died within 14 days with severe intestinal lesions, but ex-GF-ICR mice survived without lesions.  相似文献

Twenty-five species of helminths, recovered from the gastrointestinal tracts of 129 Mexican ducks from Mexico and the United States, were all new host records. The species included: Echinoparyphium recurvatum, Echinostoma revolutum, Hypoderaeum conoideum, Notocotylus attenuatus, Prosthogonimus cuneatus, Zygocotyle lunata, Anomotaenia ciliata, Cloacotaenia megalops, Diorchis bulbodes, Diorchis sp., Drepanidotaenia lanceolata, Echinocotyle rosseteri, Fimbriaria fasciolaris, Fimbriarioides sp., Hymenolepis sp. 1, Hymenolepis sp. 2, Sobolevicanthus gracilis. Corynosoma constrictum, Polymorphus minutus, Amidostomum acutum, Echinuria sp., Epomidiostomum crami, Hystrichis varispinosus, Rusguniella arctica, and Tetrameres sp. Fimbriarioides sp. occurred predominantly in ducks from south-central Chihuahua, Mexico. The distributions for the other 24 species of the helminths were not significantly different among the four collecting areas. The helminth fauna for the 32 complete specimens and 97 intestinal tracts was distributed relatively evenly among the hosts with a calculated mean evenness of 0.77 +/- 0.15 and 0.89 +/- 0.03 respectively. The parasite fauna was more similar to those of the black duck Anas rubripes Brewster of eastern North America (53%), the mallard, Anas platyrhynchos (L.) (49%), and the mottled duck, Anas fulvigula Ridgway, from Florida (45%), than to the green-winged teal, Anas crecca (L.) (36%), the gadwall, Anas strepera (L.) (30%), and the American wigeon, Anas americana Gmelin (26%), collected in the Southwest.  相似文献

Assumptions about breeding site fidelity (i.e., fidelity) in blue-winged teal (Spatula discors) are based on limited recapture data and analytic techniques. We banded female blue-winged teal (n = 12,543) from 2003 to 2014 in a 3,800-ha sample area in north-central South Dakota, USA, and used a Bayesian hierarchical modeling approach combining live recapture and dead recovery data to predict probabilities of fidelity, survival, recapture, and reporting. We explored sources of variation including time, annual wet area on the landscape, age, and nest survival, and compared our results to other dabbling ducks that nest in the Prairie Pothole Region, a critically important breeding area for waterfowl in central North America. We found annual estimates of fidelity ranging from 0.20 to 0.91, with mean values of 0.62 and 0.67 for hatch year birds and after hatch year birds, respectively. Our findings indicate that environmental factors may cause blue-winged teal to return to breeding sites more frequently than previously assumed. © The Wildlife Society, 2019  相似文献

Highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) is an extremely infectious, systemic viral disease of birds that produces high mortality and morbidity. HPAI was diagnosed in the three dead magpies (Pica pica sericea) submitted to the National Veterinary Research and Quarantine Service. At necropsy, the prominent lesions were multifocal or coalescing necrosis of the pancreas with enlargement of the livers and spleens. Microscopically, there were severely necrotizing pancreatitis and lymphocytic meningoencephalitis. Influenza viral antigen was also detected in areas closely associated with histologic lesions. Avian influenza virus was isolated from cecal tonsils and feces of the magpies. The isolated virus was identified as a highly pathogenic H5N1, with hemagglutinin proteolytic cleavage site deduced amino acid sequence of QREKRKKR/GLFGAIAG. To determine the pathogenicity of the isolate, eight 6-wk-old specific-pathogen-free chickens were inoculated intravenously with the virus, and all birds died within 24 hr after inoculation. This is the first report of HPAI in magpies.  相似文献

The T cell receptor alpha chain-deficient (TCR alpha-/-) and TCR beta chain-deficient (TCR beta-/-) mice develop chronic intestinal inflammation that resembles inflammatory bowel disease by 3 to 4 months of age. The objective of the study reported here was to determine the role of infection with the bacterial pathogen Helicobacter hepaticus in the pathogenesis of disease in TCR alphabeta mutant mice. The H. hepaticus-infected TCR alphabeta mutant mice were rederived by use of embryo transfer to produce Helicobacter-free animals. Helicobacter-free TCR alpha-/-, TCR beta-/-, and TCR alpha-/- beta-/- mice were inoculated with H. hepaticus. Experimentally infected mice and uninfected control mice were examined for intestinal lesions at 3, 6, and 9 months after inoculation. The TCR alphabeta mutant mice inoculated with H. hepaticus developed intestinal epithelial cell hyperplasia and mucosal inflammation. By 6 months after inoculation, infected animals had moderate cecal and colonic lesions. Helicobacter-free TCR alpha-/- mice, but not TCR beta-/- or TCR alpha-/- x beta-/- mice, also developed H. hepaticus-independent colitis by 9 months after inoculation. Infection with H. hepaticus is sufficient to cause chronic proliferative intestinal inflammation in TCR alphabeta mutant mice. However, H. hepaticus infection is not necessary for intestinal disease in TCR alpha-/- mice.  相似文献

We studied the response of a guild of three Anas -species, to patch disturbance caused by the beaver Castor canadensis in southern Finland during 1988–1996 Of the three species, the teal Anas crecca increased in beaver ponds during the first two years of beaver occupation compared to the situation before the beaver The mallard Anas platyrhynchos and wigeon Anas penelope did not respond to beaver flooding during the first two years Also dominance relations changed upon inundation The mallard usually was more numerous than the teal before the beaver, but the reverse was the case during beaver occupation The study shows that some animal guilds may benefit from disturbance although species dominance relations may change And, that this change in dominance can be caused by an ecosystem engineer, the beaver  相似文献

Eight sheep were inoculated with Icelandic maedi strain M 88; 2 sheep served as control sheep and were in close contact with the inoculated ones. Four of the sheep were inoculated via the respiratory tract with 7×106 TGID50 of strain M88 and the other 4 intracerebrally with 5×105 TGID50 of the same strain. Maedi M88 strain was isolated from peripheral blood leukocytes of all inoculated sheep. There was a striking difference between the 2 groups in the appearance of demonstrable viremia after inoculation. Viremia could be demonstrated in the intrapulmonarily inoculated sheep within 2–6 months but not until 8–11 months after inoculation in the intracerebrally inoculated ones. This finding is thought most probably to reflect a weak neurotropism of the strain used. After the first demonstration of viremia, maedi virus has been recovered quite reqularly in peripheral leukocytes of all intrapulmonarily inoculated sheep, but less regularly in the intracerebrally inoculated ones. Maedi virus was isolated from 1 of the uninoculated control sheep 15 months after inoculation. The first clinical case with a clinical appearance suggesting combined involvement of maedi and visna was found among the intrapulmonarily inoculated sheep, 8% months after inoculation. Histopathological examination and virus isolation confirmed maedi. The cause of paraplegia could not be confirmed. No histopathological changes were found and no virus isolation was made from the central nervous system of this animal. One of the intracerebrally inoculated sheep died suddenly without any observed clinical signs 11 months after inoculation. Histopathological examination revealed pulmonary lesions of maedi, but no visna lesions in the central nervous system, although maedi virus was isolated from various parts of brain. None of the other experimental sheep displayed clinical signs of maedi or visna during the observation period of 18 months.  相似文献

Poxvirus infection was diagnosed on the basis of gross and microscopic appearance plus the presence of typical inclusion bodies in a juvenile American green-winged teal (Anas crecca carolinensis) in Alaska. This constitutes the first known report of avian pox in migratory ducks and the first report of poxvirus infection in wild birds in Alaska.  相似文献

The pathogenesis of the UT-1 strain, a newly isolated rat virus (RV), in juvenile and newborn rats was examined. Intracerebrally (ic) inoculated newborns developed severe pantropic infections resulting in emaciation, stunted growth, diarrhea, dehydration and icterus, and died 13 to 15 days after the inoculation. Newborns inoculated intraperitoneally (ip) developed similar, but milder diseases. The virus replicated in all the organs tested, which was followed by severe viremia. Histopathologically, diffuse vacuolation and necrosis of the hepatocytes were observed in the liver. Juvenile rats inoculated with the virus showed neither clinical signs nor histopathologic lesions, although viral recovery and antibody production were observed. Thus, we conclude that the UT-1 strain of RV caused asymptomatic infections in juvenile rats, and fatal infections with hepatic lesions in newborn rats.  相似文献
