Genetics of Life History in DROSOPHILA MELANOGASTER. I. Sib Analysis of Adult Females

A sib analysis of adult life-history characters was performed on about twelve hundred females from a laboratory Drosophila melanogaster population that had been sampled from nature and cultured so as to preserve its genetic variability. The following results were found. There was no detectable trend with age in additive or dominance genetic variances for age-specific fecundity. Environmental variance for age-specific fecundity increased with age. The genetic variance for fecundity characters was primarily additive. The genetic variance for longevity was primarily dominance variance. There were negative genetic correlations between early fecundity and lifespan, as well as between mean egg-laying rate and longevity.

Abstract

Sanionia orthothecioides (Lindb.) Loeske (Drepanocladus orthothecioides (Lindb.) Roth) is reported from three Scottish islands, Hirta (St Kilda), Mainland of Shetland and Fair Isle, new to the British Isles. It is described and illustrated and the differences with the closely related S. uncinata (Hedw.) Loeske discussed.

And it lodged th e concept of comparative genetics:the science that studies gene content and gene orders. Now comparative genetics has been used to facilitate the isolation of g ene, and it indicates a new field of evolution. This review discuses the develop ment of comparative genetics.In the future, comparative genetics and comparative genomics would be probably syncretize to be a new science, and it will deepen t he understanding of genomes.?     

The Genetics of CAENORHABDITIS ELEGANS

Methods are described for the isolation, complementation and mapping of mutants of Caenorhabditis elegans, a small free-living nematode worm. About 300 EMS-induced mutants affecting behavior and morphology have been characterized and about one hundred genes have been defined. Mutations in 77 of these alter the movement of the animal. Estimates of the induced mutation frequency of both the visible mutants and X chromosome lethals suggests that, just as in Drosophila, the genetic units in C. elegans are large.
