In this study, we estimated the extent of asexual reproduction and genotypic diversity at the intra- and interspecific levels in sponges of the genus Chondrilla in the Caribbean and along the coast of Brazil. Allozymes were used to identify the genotypes of specimens of Chondrilla in each location. The four species studied displayed a large variation in the extent of clonal reproduction and genotypic diversity, with the two species from the Bahamas having a greater proportion of asexually produced individuals than those along the coast of Brazil. Conspecific Brazilian populations of Chondrilla sp. had large differences in clonality: the population from a heterogeneous environment and under the influence of a strong upwelling had little clonality (7%), whereas the population located 350 km south along the coast, in a more homogeneous and temporally stable environment, had a five-fold larger (39%) proportion of asexually derived individuals. Finally, we were able to confirm that, besides fission, the genus Chondrilla displays a second mode of asexual reproduction, by fragmentation of teardrop shaped individuals.  相似文献

The Brazilian coast, the Caribbean and the tropical South Atlantic oceanic islands reef ichthyofauna separated into two major clusters: (1) the western Atlantic continental margin and Bermuda, further divided into (1a) the western North Atlantic, and (1b) the Brazilian coast; and (2) the South Atlantic oceanic islands, also divided in (2a) the Brazilian offshore islands, and (2b) Ascension and St Helena. Species geographic ranges suggest the recognition of only two western Atlantic zoogeographic provinces for tropical marine shore fishes. A Brazilian Province, including the offshore localities of Atol das Rocas, Fernando de Noronha, Trindade and St Paul's Rocks, and an expanded West Indian Province that includes Bermuda. Ascension and St Helena should be regarded as a separated Central Atlantic Province.  相似文献

Most of the known wintering areas of Piping Plovers (Charadrius melodus) are along the Atlantic and Gulf coasts of the United States and into Mexico, and in the Caribbean. However, 1066 threatened/endangered Piping Plovers were recently found wintering in The Bahamas, an area not previously known to be important for the species. Although representing about 27% of the birds counted during the 2011 International Piping Plover Winter Census, the location of their breeding site(s) was unknown. Thus, our objectives were to determine the location(s) of their breeding site(s) using molecular markers and by tracking banded individuals, identify spring and fall staging sites, and examine site fidelity and survival. We captured and color‐banded 57 birds in January and February 2010 in The Bahamas. Blood samples were also collected for genetic evaluation of the likely subspecies wintering in The Bahamas. Band re‐sightings and DNA analysis revealed that at least 95% of the Piping Plovers wintering in The Bahamas originated on the Atlantic coast of the United States and Canada. Re‐sightings of birds banded in The Bahamas spanned the breeding distribution of the species along the Atlantic coast from Newfoundland to North Carolina. Site fidelity to breeding and wintering sites was high (88–100%). Spring and fall staging sites were located along the Atlantic coast of the United States, with marked birds concentrating in the Carolinas. Our estimate of true survival for the marked birds was 0.71 (95% CI: 0.61–0.80). Our results indicate that more than one third of the Piping Plover population that breeds along the Atlantic coast winters in The Bahamas. By determining the importance of The Bahamas to the Atlantic subspecies of Piping Plovers, future conservation efforts for these populations can be better focused on where they are most needed.  相似文献

Among Atlantic scleractinian corals, species diversity is highest in the Caribbean, but low diversity and high endemism are observed in various peripheral populations in central and eastern Atlantic islands and along the coasts of Brazil and West Africa. The degree of connectivity between these distantly separated populations is of interest because it provides insight into processes at both evolutionary and ecological time scales, such as speciation, recruitment dynamics and the persistence of coral populations. To assess connectivity in broadly distributed coral species of the Atlantic, DNA sequence data from two nuclear markers were obtained for six coral species spanning their distributional ranges. At basin-wide scales, significant differentiation was generally observed among populations in the Caribbean, Brazil and West Africa. Concordance of patterns in connectivity among co-distributed taxa indicates that extrinsic barriers, such as the Amazon freshwater plume or long stretches of open ocean, restrict dispersal of coral larvae from region to region. Within regions, dispersal ability appears to be influenced by aspects of reproduction and life history. Two broadcasting species, Siderastrea siderea and Montastraea cavernosa, were able to maintain gene flow among populations separated by as much as 1,200 km along the coast of Brazil. In contrast, brooding species, such as Favia gravida and Siderastrea radians, had more restricted gene flow along the Brazilian coast.

Several aspects of the population biology and the population genetic structure of Ctenomys porteousi were studied. Chromosomal and allozyme polymorphisms in two local populations separated by 10 km were used to infer genetic structure. Heterochromatic addition/deletion rearrangements for six autosomal pairs were employed as genetic markers. Allozyme variants were analysed by the study of thirty-one presumptive loci. Thirteen loci (43%) were polymorphic, average observed heterozygosity per locus was 10%, and mean number of alleles per locus was 1.57. Chromosomal and allozyme frequencies were homogeneous across populations. The estimated Fst values were very low, 0.009 and 0.022 for chromosomal and allozyme data respectively. Gene flow was indirectly estimated by the method of Wright, Nm values (mean number of migrants per generation per deme) was very high (27.2 and 11.3 for chromosomal and allozyme data respectively). The Fis values suggest a significant defect of heterozygotes that could be explained by the Wahlund effect. The ecological data indicate the occurrence of sharp changes in density and in distribution pattern in short time. The genetic and ecological data suggest that the population structure of C. porteousi differs from that found in other species of Ctenomys affected by chromosomal mechanisms of speciation.  相似文献

Some excavating sponges of the genus Cliona compete with live reef corals, often killing and bioeroding entire colonies. Important aspects affecting distribution of these species, such as dispersal capability and population structure, remain largely unknown. Thus, the aim of this study was to determine levels of genetic connectivity and dispersal of Cliona delitrix across the Greater Caribbean (Caribbean Sea, Bahamas and Florida), to understand current patterns and possible future trends in their distribution and effects on coral reefs. Using ten species‐specific microsatellite markers, we found high levels of genetic differentiation between six genetically distinct populations: one in the Atlantic (Florida‐Bahamas), one specific to Florida and four in the South Caribbean Sea. In Florida, two independent breeding populations are likely separated by depth. Gene flow and ecological dispersal occur among other populations in the Florida reef tract, and between some Florida locations and the Bahamas. Similarly, gene flow occurs between populations in the South Caribbean Sea, but appears restricted between the Caribbean Sea and the Atlantic (Florida‐Bahamas). Dispersal of C. delitrix was farther than expected for a marine sponge and favoured in areas where currents are strong enough to transport sponge eggs or larvae over longer distances. Our results support the influence of ocean current patterns on genetic connectivity, and constitute a baseline to monitor future C. delitrix trends under climate change.  相似文献

DNA microsatellite markers were used to characterize the population genetic structure of the lemon shark, Negaprion brevirostris, in the western Atlantic. This study demonstrates for the first time the usefulness of microsatellites to study population genetic structure and mating systems in the Chondricthyes. Lemon sharks (mostly juveniles) were sampled non-destructively from four locations, Gullivan Bay and Marquesas Key in Florida, Bimini, Bahamas, and Atol das Rocas, Brazil. At least 545 individuals were genotyped at each of four dinucleotide loci. The number of alleles per locus ranged from 19 to 43, and expected heterozygosities ranged from 0.69 to 0.90. Relatively little genetic structure was found in the western Atlantic, with small but significant values for estimators of F(ST) and R(ST) among populations, theta (0.016) and rho (0.026), respectively. No sharp discontinuities were found between the Caribbean sites and Brazil, and most alleles were found at all four sites, indicating that gene flow occurs throughout the western Atlantic with no evidence for distinct stocks.  相似文献

Mytella guyanensis Lamarck (1819) and Mytella charruana d'Orbigny (1846) are widespread euryhaline bivalves that have become commercially important in Brazil. Despite their importance, however, no genetic information that would be useful to orient governmental policies is available for these species. We analyzed, through allozyme electrophoresis, populations of M. guyanensis and M. charruana along 3,500 km of Brazilian coast. Pairwise comparisons among gene frequencies in M. guyanensis resulted in high levels of pairwise gene identity (I = 0.976 to 0.998). Conversely, significant levels of population structure were found in both M. guyanensis (FST = 0.089) and M. charruana (FST = 0.102). Heterozygosity levels for both species were high (H(e) = 0.090 to 0.134 in M. guyanensis and H(e) = 0.191 to 0.228 in M. charruana). The larger population size of M. charruana could explain, at least partially, the higher levels of genetic variability for this species. These levels of genetic variability yield an effective population size estimate of about 300,000 for M. guyanensis, and 540,000 for M. charruana, based on neutralist expectations. Remarkably, these numbers are much smaller than the estimated actual population sizes. This distortion might be explained by unstable population sizes and it suggests that long-term genetic variability studies are crucial to prevent artifactual viability analysis data for these commercially exploited species.  相似文献

The sea anemone Actinia bermudensis [Proc. Acad. Nat. Sci. Philadelphia 41 (1889) 102] has a widespread distribution over the Western Atlantic, where it has been reported from Bermuda and Bahamas to southern Brazil. Nonetheless, reproductive features of this species, which broods asexually produced offspring, suggest that it has low dispersal capabilities. This raises a question about the specific status of the Brazilian population of A. bermudensis. The aim of this paper was to evaluate the taxonomic status of the Brazilian population, by genetically comparing it with the type locality (Bermuda) population. For this, we used allozyme electrophoresis to analyze samples from both populations. Thirteen enzyme systems (16 loci) yielded interpretable results for all populations. A high differentiation was encountered for the Western Atlantic A. bermudensis population (FST=0.434), partially due to the presence of a diagnostic locus (LAP) between Bermuda and Brazilian populations. This result could be taken as an indication that the Brazilian population should be elevated to a specific status. We do expect some genetic differentiation, however, between natural populations separated over wide geographic distances. Finally, since Mantel and regression analyses did not rule out the isolation by distance model, we have conservatively decided to maintain the specific status of A. bermudensis from Brazil.  相似文献

In this study, we present the first data about putative source populations of the vagrant Subantarctic fur seal, Arctocephalus tropicalis, found on the Brazilian coast, through the comparison of their mitochondrial DNA control sequences to exclusive haplotypes from the main breeding colonies of the species. The results indicated that, despite the majority of the vagrant individuals are from Gough Island (the closest breeding site to the Brazilian coast), they also come from other reproductive colonies, such as Crozet Island, a distance around 16,500 km from the Brazilian coast. Furthermore, the molecular data identified three possible management units: (1) Gough, (2) Amsterdam, and (3) Marion, Macquarie and Crozet. This significant genetic subdivision must be taken into account in any future management plan for the species conservation, including rehabilitation and even reintroduction of vagrant fur seals. Atherinella blackburni is a silverside species whose occurrence on the Brazilian coast was not properly registered until recently. So far, records of its distribution along the Brazilian shore were limited to Itaparica Island, Bahia State, and Porto Inhaúma, Rio de Janeiro State. In a recent survey of the ichthyofauna of Itamambuca Beach, Ubatuba, S?o Paulo State, 100 specimens of this species were collected, yielding a considerable source of information regarding its ecology and a new southern limit of its distribution. A detailed survey of an ichthyological collection revealed lots of this species from regions of the Brazilian Northeast, resulting in a northward expansion of the occurrence of A. blackburni in Brazilian waters. Besides the populations found on the Brazilian coast, the species also occurs discontinuously in the Atlantic coasts of Costa Rica, Panama and Venezuela. Meristic and morphometric analysis showed overlapped values between Brazilian populations and the ones closer to the Caribbean. An ecological study of A. blackburni at Itamambuca Beach revealed that it is a predominantly diurnal species with preference for warm and salty waters, often occurring in sandy-bottom environments. It was more abundant in Summer and Winter, when individuals with smaller values of length and weight also occurred.  相似文献

The sponge species Chondrilla nucula has a simple morphology and a very wide geographical distribution. To verify whether the latter might be an artifact of the former, samples of this species were collected across 10,000 km of its range, in the Mediterranean, the Caribbean, and the southwestern atlantic. The classical (spicule morphology) and molecular (allozymes) systematic approaches were compared, to try to define the geographic limits between populations and detect possible cryptic species. We found five distinct genetic forms within C. nucula that sometimes showed morphological homogeneity and other times plasticity. The difference in size of spicules could not be related to the clear-cut genetic differences, suggesting that the use of spicule sizes for sponge systematics should be reappraised. The population of one of the genetic forms along 3000 km of the Brazilian coast was highly structured (FST = 0.21; Nem = 0.96). Our results reject the null hypothesis of cosmopolitanism of C. nucula and indicate that the putative worldwide distribution of some marine sponges, and possibly many other benthic invertebrates, may be the result of overly conservative systematics. Cryptic species appear to be particularly prevalent when genera are well defined but species are characterized by only a few morphological characters.  相似文献

Geographic barriers that limit the movement of individuals between populations may create or maintain phylogenetically discrete lineages. Such barriers are often inferred from geographic surveys of a single mitochondrial marker to identify phylogenetic splits. Mitochondrial DNA, however, has an effective population size one-fourth that of nuclear DNA, which can facilitate the rapid evolution of monophyletic mtDNA lineages in the absence of geographic barriers. The identification of geographic barriers will thus be more robust if barriers are proposed a priori, and tested with multiple independent genetic markers in multiple species. Here, we tested two proposed marine biogeographic breaks located at the Mona Passage in the Caribbean Sea and at the southern end of Exuma Sound in the Bahamas. We sequenced mitochondrial cytochrome b (400 bp) and nuclear rag1 (573 bp) for nine species and colour forms (183 individuals total) within the teleost genus Elacatinus (Gobiidae) that span the proposed breaks. Our results showed that Mona Passage separated mtcyb and rag1 lineages, with no genetic exchange between populations separated by just 23 km. However, the Central Bahamas barrier was only weakly supported by our data. Importantly, neither barrier coincided with deep genetic splits. This suggests that these two barriers did not initially isolate regional populations, but instead disrupt ongoing gene flow between regions. Our inferred relationships further suggested a division of the Caribbean region into northwestern and southeastern regions, a pattern reflected by some freshwater and terrestrial vertebrates. Our results, coupled with genetic and demographic data from other reef fishes and corals, provide robust support for the Mona Passage as a long-term biogeographic barrier for Caribbean animals.  相似文献

Length‐weight and length‐length relationships were determined for nine fish species of Rocas Atoll, Fernando de Noronha and Trindade Island. Samples were conducted in 2014 (Rocas) and 2015 (Noronha and Trindade) in tidepools using anaesthetic clove oil and hand nets to collect fish fauna. Four species (Stegastes rocasensis, Scartella itajobi, Starksia multilepis and Bathygobius brasiliensis) are endemic from the Noronha‐Rocas ridge, two are endemic from the Trindade‐Martin Vaz insular complex (Scartella poiti and Malacoctenus brunoi), and three species have a widespread distribution. All relationships are novel for science.  相似文献

The work attempts to explain the previously discovered phenomenon of excessive taxonomic status of the species and subspecies of Cuban hutias relative to their protein genetic divergence. The reasons underlying the fragmentary distribution of the species belonging to the family Capromyidae over the Antilles and Bahamas is also considered. Samples of four geographically distant hutia (genera Capromys and Mysateles) populations inhabiting different biotypes were assessed according to 32 allozyme loci. It has been demonstrated that the interpopulation and subspecies differentiation in the gene frequencies in these genera is very low. As for the pattern of polymorphism (Shannon’s measure), the populations and subspecies within these genera are well differentiated and adequate to their morphological differentiation. This suggests that the genetic divergence pattern of hutias in post-Pleistoce ne was predominantly determined by selection on the background of a relatively rapid formation of multiple morphotypes. It is assumed that the evolution within the family Capromyidae in the earlier and the later periods was associated with the geomorphological and climatic events in the history of the Earth. This standpoint provides for explaining the phenomena of both the excessive taxonomic status of the Cuban Capromyinae and the fragmentary distribution of these species over the Antilles and Bahamas, amazing at a first glance.  相似文献

Starch gel electrophoresis was used to examine the allozyme variation and the genetic relationship between Salix exigua and other North American willows. A total of 149 clonal collections comprising six willow species were analyzed for 26 putative isozyme loci. Genetic distances between species were estimated and used for distance analysis of species relationships. Individual alleles were used as characters for cladistic analysis of phylogenetic inference. Distance analysis indicates that S. exigua has approximately equal divergence to both subgenus Salix and Vetrix. Results of cladistic analysis suggest that S. exigua may be a separate group isolated from all other willows. Based on evidence of allozyme variation, it is suggested that the taxonomic placement of S. exigua within subgenus Salix need to be revised.  相似文献

Aim Lionfish (Pterois volitans and P. miles) are popular ornamental fishes native to the Indo‐Pacific that were introduced into Florida waters and are rapidly spreading and establishing throughout the Western Atlantic (WA). Although unfortunate, this invasion provides an excellent system in which to test hypotheses on conservation biology and marine biogeography. The goals of this study are: (1) to document the geographical extent of P. volitans and P. miles; (2) to determine whether the progression of the lionfish invasion is the result of expansion following the initial introduction event or the consequence of multiple introductions at various WA locations; and (3) to analyse the chronology of the invasion in conjunction with the genetic data in order to provide real‐time assessments of hypotheses of marine biogeography. Location The Greater Caribbean, including the US east coast, Bermuda, the Bahamas and the Caribbean Sea. Methods Mitochondrial control region sequences were obtained from lionfish individuals collected from Bermuda and three Caribbean locations and analysed in conjunction with previously published data from five native and two non‐native locations (US east coast and the Bahamas; a total of six WA locations). Genetic variation within and among groups was quantified, and population structure inferred via spatial analyses of molecular variance, pairwise ΦST, exact tests, Mantel tests and haplotype networks. Results Mitochondrial DNA screening of WA lionfish shows that while P. miles is restricted to the northernmost locations (Bermuda and the US east coast), P. volitans is ubiquitous and much more abundant. Invasive populations of P. miles and P. volitans have significantly lower levels of genetic diversity relative to their native counterparts, confirming that their introduction resulted in a strong founder effect. Despite the relative genetic homogeneity across the six WA locations, population structure analyses of P. volitans indicate significant differentiation between the northern (US east coast, the Bahamas and Bermuda) and the Caribbean populations. Main conclusions Our findings suggest that the ubiquity of WA lionfish is the result of dispersal from a single source of introduction in Florida and not of multiple independent introductions across the range. In addition, the progression of the lionfish invasion (as documented from sightings), integrated with the genetic evidence, provides support for five of six major scenarios of connectivity and phylogeographical breaks previously inferred for Caribbean organisms.  相似文献

The salamander Ensatina eschscholtzii is an example of a ring species in which extant intermediate stages of terminal forms have a nearly continuous range, offering replicated interactions at several stages of divergence. We employ a greatly expanded allozyme database and individual-based analyses to separate the effects of divergence time and gene flow to evaluate how gradual divergence of populations around the ring contributes to the development of reproductive isolation. Despite the high degree of genetic ( D ≤ 0.39) and ecomorphological divergence observed in secondary contacts around the ring, reproductive isolation or rare hybridization is observed only at the terminus of the ring. Instead, in the secondary contacts sampled around the ring, hybrids are common and reproductively successful, enabling genetic leakage between parental genomes and the potential for genetic merger. Nevertheless, genetic admixture is geographically broad (<100 km) only in contacts between ecomorphologically similar populations (within subspecies). When divergence is accompanied by alternative patterns of adaptive divergence (between subspecies), zones of intergradation are narrower and affect populations only locally (>8 km). Diversification and consequent genetic interactions in Ensatina reveal a continuum between populations, ecological races, and species, where polytypic traits and high genetic differentiation are maintained without reproductive isolation.  相似文献
