Facultative diapause, a strategy that allows insects to initiate additional generations when conditions are favorable or to enter diapause when they are not, has a profound effect on the ecology and evolution of species. Most previous studies have concentrated on the role of photoperiod and temperature in inducing facultative diapause in insects. In contrast, here we studied pupal diapause mediated by larval host plants in the cotton bollworm Helicoverpa armigera, and confirmed that pupal weight is a critical factor. Two groups of third instar H. armigera larvae, kept at 25 °C with L:D = 8:16 and 20 °C with photoperiod of L:D = 8:16, respectively, were fed on six host plants and on artificial diet (as a control) to determine how larval host plants affect diapause incidence and related traits (such as pupal weight and developmental duration). The data showed larval host plants affected diapause incidence significantly and the effects could be masked by low temperature. Further analysis showed that pupal size, not the length of the sensitive stage, affected the decision to enter diapause. In a further experiment, third-instar to final-stage larvae deprived of artificial diet for 2 days demonstrated a direct relationship between pupal weight and diapause incidence. These results suggest that larval host plants, by affecting pupal size, may influence diapause occurrence in H. armigera. This has important adaptive significance for both over-wintering survival and the possibility for completing an additional generation.

The effect of temperature, photoperiod, artificial diet and water on the termination of diapause by larvae of the stem borer, Chilo partellus (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae), was studied in the laboratory. Termination of diapause as indicated by pupation was affected mainly by a combination of high temperature and a long day photoperiod. Total darkness did not prevent termination of diapause and pupation occurred also in larvae which were never exposed to water. Long days accelerated pupation, but, under 16 h daylength, termination of diapause was faster than under constant illumination. Provision of artificial diet had no effect or slowed down pupation but water decreased the time to pupation. Under 28°C, 16 h daylength and availability of water, C. partellus diapausing larvae terminated diapause and pupated in about 9 days.

Diet quality influences organismal fitness within and across generations. For herbivorous insects, the transgenerational effecets of diet remain relatively underexplored.Usinga3×3×2 factorial experiment,we evaluated how N enrichment in parental diets of Neolemd abbreviata(Larcordaire)(C oleoptera:Chrysomelidae),a biological control agent for Tradescantia fluminensis Vell.(Commelinaceae),may influence life history and performance of Fi and F2 offspring under reciprocal experiments. We found limited transgenerational effects of foliar nitrogen variability among life-history traits in both larvae and adults.Larval weight gain and mortality were responsive to parental diet contrary to feeding damage, pupal weight and duration taken to pupate. There were significant parental diet x test interactions in larval feeding damage, weight gain, pupal weight and time to pupation.Generally, offspring from parents under high N plants performed better even under low N test plants.Adult traits including oviposition selection, feeding weight and longevity did not respond to the efects of parental diet nor its interaction with test diet as was the case in the larval stage. However, the main efects of test diet were more important in determining adult performance in both generations suggesting limited sensitivity to parental diet in the adult stage. Our results show conflicting responses to parental diet between larvae and adults ofthe same generation among an insec species with both actively feeding larual and adult life stagee These tranegeneratinonal efferte,or lack thereof, may have implications on the field performance of N.abbrevita under heterogencous nutritional landscapes.

Twenty years ago, scientists began to recognize that parental effects are one of the most important influences on progeny phenotype. Consequently, it was postulated that herbivorous insects could produce progeny that are acclimatized to the host plant experienced by the parents to improve progeny fitness, because host plants vary greatly in quality and quantity, and can thus provide important cues about the resources encountered by the next generation. However, despite the possible profound implications for our understanding of host-use evolution of herbivores, host-race formation and sympatric speciation, intense research has been unable to verify transgenerational acclimatization in herbivore–host plant relationships. We reared Coenonympha pamphilus larvae in the parental generation (P) on high- and low-quality host plants, and reared the offspring (F1) of both treatments again on high- and low-quality plants. We tested not only for maternal effects, as most previous studies, but also for paternal effects. Our results show that parents experiencing predictive cues on their host plant can indeed adjust progeny''s phenotype to anticipated host plant quality. Maternal effects affected female and male offspring, whereas paternal effects affected only male progeny. We here verify, for the first time to our knowledge, the long postulated transgenerational acclimatization in an herbivore–host plant interaction.

Boxwood is a very important component of the natural forests of the eastern Pyrenees. In the low altitudes of these forests, the invasive species Cydalima perspectalis (Walker) causes considerable damage, and there is concern that it will migrate towards the natural forests at higher altitudes. To determine the biological parameters of the local pest population, a semiartificial diet with lyophilized powdered Buxus sempervirens L. leaves was developed. The results obtained indicate that the studied population of C. perspectalis is very similar to the native Japanese population in terms of the number of larval instars to complete development, the development rate and the critical photoperiod for the induction of diapause. It has also been demonstrated that long photoperiods can shorten the duration of larval development. The diapause induction response was classified as type I, and diapause termination was classified as type III. At the two studied temperatures, 25º and 15ºC, the larvae seemed to require a similar number of days in diapause, approximately 3 months, to spontaneously resume development; temperatures can also prompt larvae to resume development. The critical photoperiod in the study area occurs during the second half of August, varying somewhat according to temperature. The greatest defoliation is caused by the offspring of the first generation, while the majority of the larval offspring of the second generation will enter diapause. The survival of natural boxwood in this area will depend on its ability to regrow one or two years after extensive defoliation and on the adaptation of several indigenous natural enemies in the region to feed on C. perspectalis.

The cabbage beetle, Colaphellus bowringi Baly (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae), which is widely distributed in China, undergoes an imaginal diapause in the soil. In this study, we investigated the influences of parental geographic origin, host plant, and rearing density on the diapause incidence of progeny in this beetle. In studies conducted at 25 °C and L12:D12 photoperiod, the proportions of adults entering diapause were significantly different among latitudes from which the parents had been collected. The incidence of diapause increased with increasing latitude. Reciprocal cross tests between post‐diapause adults from different latitudes showed that there were significant differences in diapause incidence between pure‐bred and hybrid adults, suggesting that diapause incidence among progeny was determined by both the female and male, although the female appeared to have a stronger effect than the male. These results revealed that parental origin has an important influence on progeny diapause. Parental host plant species not only affected diapause incidence of the current generation, but also affected the incidence of diapause in the progeny produced by the non‐diapause parents; yet, the parental host plant had no influence on the incidence of diapause in the progeny produced by the post‐diapause parents. Rearing density of the parental generation had no significant effect on the incidence of diapause in the progeny.

Diapause in fully grown larvae of Ephestia elutella and Plodia inferpunctella was induced by low temperature and short photoperiods. Light intensities below 1 lx affected the induction of diapause in both species. At 20 and 25d?C, the critical photo-period for E.elutella was c. 14 h, and for P.interpunctella c. 13 h. The sensitive phase in both species occurred at about the time of the fourth larval moult. In E.elutella about seven short photoperiods were required for larvae to enter diapause. In P.interpunctella high population density during larval development increased the proportion of larvae entering diapause. The conditions inducing diapause in laboratory stocks, and in stocks collected from the field, were different. Laboratory stocks of both species did not enter diapause at 25d?C and required short photoperiods for diapause at 20d?C. Some larvae of the field stock of E.elutella entered diapause in constant darkness at 30d?C, the number being increased at low R.H., and almost all did in short photoperiods at 25°C. At 20T, most larvae of this stock entered diapause regardless of photoperiod, and at 15°C all did. In P.interpunctella up to one-third of larvae of the field stock entered diapause in short photoperiods at 25d?C, and all did if transferred to short photoperiods at 20d?C. In unheated premises, falling temperatures normally induce diapause in E.elutella each autumn, photoperiod only being important if temperatures are high. In P.interpunctella, photoperiod is a more important factor because it can override the effect of falling temperature to a greater extent than in E.elutella. In both species, however, different field populations may respond in different ways.

The induction of diapause can be adaptive for egg survival during unfavorable conditions, while direct development can be advantageous under favorable conditions by allowing additional generations to exploit abundant resources. Therefore, the physiological capability of a female to respond to environmental cues indicative of habitat quality by producing eggs of the appropriate developmental phenotype should be under strong selection. Additionally, developing embryos may alter the developmental trajectory initiated by the female in response to changing environmental conditions. In this study, we used a cross-fostering approach to isolate the maternal effects of parental diapause history (not previously studied) and egg-laying temperature from the influence of the incubation environment experienced by the developing embryo on the proportion of diapause eggs produced by the striped ground cricket, Allonemobius socius. We found that an interaction between egg-incubation temperature and parental diapause history strongly affected the proportion of diapause eggs produced and the proportion of eggs that hatched within a 16–18 day incubation period, while egg-laying temperature and all other interactions did not. These novel results indicate that embryos can respond directly to the environmental conditions they experience during development, but that their ability to do so is influenced by maternal effects such as parental diapause history. The results of this study not only provide evidence, for the first time, of parental diapause history affecting diapause proportions, but also raise additional questions about the mechanism by which environmental information is transmitted from parent to offspring and how offspring are able to respond to conditions experienced during their own development.

To investigate geographic adaptation of the migratory locust Locusta migratoria in China, locusts were collected from six localities, ranging from 47.4°N to 19.2°N. Using offspring from the various populations, we compared embryonic diapause, reproductive traits, cold‐hardiness and adult body size. The incidence of embryonic diapause was influenced by the genetic makeup, parental photoperiod, and incubation temperature of the eggs. The northern strain (47.4°N) produced diapause eggs under all photoperiodic conditions, whereas the other strains produced a higher proportion of diapause eggs when exposed to a short photoperiod. The incubation temperature greatly influenced diapause induction. At a low temperature, all eggs entered diapause, even some of those from a tropical strain (19.2°N) in which no diapause was induced at high temperatures. Photoperiodic changes during the parental generation affected the incidence of embryonic diapause. Diapause intensity decreased with decreasing original latitude. Cold hardiness was compared by exposing eggs in diapause to either ?10 or ?20°C for various periods; the northern strain was more cold‐hardy than the southern strain, although some eggs in the tropical strain were probably not in a state of diapause. Adult body size and head width showed a complicated pattern of variation along the latitudinal gradient, whereas egg pod size (egg pod width and egg number) and hatchling weight tended to decrease with decreasing latitude. These results reveal that L. migratoria has adapted to local environments and that the latitudinal gradient appears to play an important role in shaping L. migratoria life cycle and development.

The role of photoperiod and temperature in the induction of overwintering diapause inPhyllonorycter blancardella (F.) (Lepidoptera: Gracillariidae) was examined in the laboratory and field using leafminers from commercial apple orchards in Ontario, Canada.P. blancardella exhibited a long-day response to photoperiod: long daylengths resulted in uninterrupted development whereas short daylengths induced diapause. The estimated critical photoperiod for diapause induction was L14.25∶D9.75. The larvae of leafminers destined to enter diapause took ca. 3× longer to complete development than the larvae of non-diapausing leafminers. The development prolonging effect of photoperiod decreased with decreasing daylength. Temperature modified the diapause inducing effect of photoperiod. At L14.25∶D9.75, diapause incidence was similar at 15 and 20°C but was lower at 25°C. Photoperiod also altered the normal relationship between development rate and temperature. At L14.25∶D9.75, the duration of larval development of diapausing leafminers was similar at 15, 20 and 25°C. Temperature alone is unlikely to have a role in the induction of diapause because leafminers exposed to natural late summer and fall temperature regimes and L16∶D8 did not enter diapause.

Larvae of the bean blister beetle Epicauta gorhami Marseul (Coleoptera: Meloidae) feed on grasshopper eggs in soil and undergo hypermetamorphosis. This beetle undergoes larval diapause in the fifth instar as a pseudopupa, a form characteristic of hypermetamorphosis in meloid beetles. The effects of temperature, photoperiod and soil humidity on larval development of E. gorhami are examined in a population in Miyazaki, Japan, using egg pods of Locusta migratoria L. as food. At lower temperatures (20 and 22.5 °C), all larvae become pseudopupae, regardless of the photoperiod. By contrast, at higher temperatures (27.5 and 30 °C), almost all larvae pupate at the end of the fourth instar, again regardless of the photoperiod. A long‐day photoperiodic response occurs only at an intermediate temperature (25 °C): under an LD 12 : 12 h photocycle, all larvae enter diapause, although the diapause incidence tends to decrease as the day length becomes longer. Pseudopupae are immobile and remain in diapause for ≥120 days when they are kept under the same conditions, except that diapause terminates within a relatively short time at 30 °C. Although lower soil humidity retards post‐feeding development, soil humidity has no effect on the diapause incidence. On the basis of the short developmental period and diapause avoidance under summer conditions, it is suggested that this beetle partially produces two generations a year in southwestern Japan.

Abstract Mummified pistachios containing fully grown diapause larvae of Eurytoma plotnikovi Nikol'skaya (Hym., Eurytomidae) were collected in early August and late September in coastal northern Greece and subjected to various photoperiod and temperature treatments, then maintained at 19 or 26°C and a long-day (LD 16:8 h), a changing, or a short-day (LD 10:14 h) photoperiod until pupation. In larvae of early August (beginning of diapause) subjected for 20 weeks to 19°C under a long, a changing, or a short photophase, followed by 19°C and a long photophase, 50% of the larvae pupated after 24, 18 and 13 weeks respectively. After exposure for 20 or even 12 weeks to a short photophase and low temperatures (10 or 4°C), pupation occurred after only 7–8 weeks and was more synchronous. The ranges of temperature for diapause development and post-diapause morphogenesis overlap. After exposure for 12 weeks to short days and low temperature, larvae of late September pupated much sooner under long days than under short days and sooner at 26° than at 19°C. E.plotnikovi depends on both temperature and photoperiod for diapause development, low temperature having a strong favourable effect on the earlier part and long day on the later part of diapause. In a few larvae of another pistachio seed wasp, Megastigmus pistaciae Walker, after a long enough period of low temperatures, diapause was terminated normally at 26°C and long days, or at 19°C and long or short days.

Abstract The Indian meal moth Plodia interpunctella Hübner (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) diapauses as a last‐instar (fifth) larva. At 30 °C, no larvae enter diapause under any photoperiodic conditions; at 25 °C, the photoperiodic response curve is a long‐day type with a critical length of approximately 13 h light; at 20 °C, diapause is induced moderately even under long days (> 13 h). Cumulative effects of short days or long days on diapause induction are determined by alternate, stepwise and gradually changing regimes of photoperiod at 25 °C. When the larvae are repeatedly exposed to LD 16 : 8 h and LD 12 : 12 h photoperiods every other day, the incidence of diapause is 37%. When the larvae are placed under an LD 16 : 8 h photoperiod for 2 days and then under an LD 12 : 12 h photoperiod for 1 day, it is 38 %. Exposure to an LD 16 : 8 h photoperiod for 1 day and then to an LD 12 : 12 h photoperiod for 2 days induces only 15% diapause. This may indicate that the photoperiodic information is not accumulated in a simple fashion despite the generally accepted hypothesis (i.e. photoperiodic counter). Larvae exposed to an LD 16 : 8 h photoperiod for 5 days after oviposition express a very high incidence of diapause even under short days between an LD 2 : 22 h and LD 12 : 12 h photoperiod. After 10 days exposure to an LD 16 : 8 h photoperiod, however, the short day does not induce diapause strongly. On the other hand, an LD 12 : 12 h photoperiod in the early larval life is highly effective in the induction of diapause. A gradual increase or decrease of photoperiod (2 min day?1) shows that the direction of photoperiodic change does not affect the diapause determination.

The form and variability of temperature-dependent development responses were measured for the braconid parasitoidMeteorus trachynotus (Vier.), developing inChoristoneura fumiferana (Clem.) andC. rosaceana (Harr.). It was found that parasitism reduces the duration and variability of postdiapause development inC. rosaceana larvae, and that the development of the parasitoid does not resume until its host emerges from diapause.M. trachynotus development and entry into diapause are controlled by the host. In large, nondiapausing hosts, the parasitoid can complete one generation in about 348 degree-days above 5.9°C. Male and female adults live an average of 22.0 and 23.8 days at 20°C, and the preoviposition period is 1.7 days. Total fecundity averages 194.2 eggs per female and is reduced considerably by low host density. Under our experimental conditions, femaleM. trachynotus lay a maximum of 14.3 eggs per day, with a maximum of 3.7 eggs per host, on average. Simulations based on degree-day accumulation in 13 locations in eastern Canada showed that the parasitoid was well synchronized with its two alternative hosts, thatM. trachynotus could complete three generations in most locations, and that voltinism was essentially determined by entry ofC. rosaceana larvae into diapause. Overlap between adult parasitoids and larvae of the spruce budworm is incomplete, and inadequate synchrony seems to be an important aspect of the ecological interactions between these two organisms.

Induction of diapause in the larval stage of the oblique-banded leafroller, Choristoneura rosaceana (Harris), was found to be dependent on both photoperiod and temperature. At constant temperatures of 24, 20 and 16°C, short photoperiods induced diapause. The critical photoperiod was between 14–15 h of light per day at 20 and 16°C. At 14 h light: 10 h dark, all larvae expressed diapause. Temperature had a modifying effect, and slightly shifted the larval response to diapause-inducing photoperiods. High constant temperatures of 28°C and above induced diapause in some individuals (< 20%), while fluctuating temperatures of 32 and 16°C in a 12-h cycle resulted in 67% diapause induction, suggesting that diapause could also be induced by fluctuating temperatures, particularly if the higher temperature exceeds 25°C.The first- and the second-instar larvae were the only two stages sensitive to diapause induction. Exposure of adult, egg and third, fourth, and fifth-larval instars to diapause-inducing conditions did not produce diapause. Although diapause was induced in the first or the second instars, it was always expressed in the third or fourth instar.

Living in seasonally changing environments requires adaptation to seasonal cycles. Many insects use the change in day length as a reliable cue for upcoming winter and respond to shortened photoperiod through diapause. In this study, we report the clinal variation in photoperiodic diapause induction in populations of the parasitoid wasp Nasonia vitripennis collected along a latitudinal gradient in Europe. In this species, diapause occurs in the larval stage and is maternally induced. Adult Nasonia females were exposed to different photoperiodic cycles and lifetime production of diapausing offspring was scored. Females switched to the production of diapausing offspring after exposure to a threshold number of photoperiodic cycles. A latitudinal cline was found in the proportion of diapausing offspring, the switch point for diapause induction measured as the maternal age at which the female starts to produce diapausing larvae, and the critical photoperiod for diapause induction. Populations at northern latitudes show an earlier switch point, higher proportions of diapausing individuals and longer critical photoperiods. Since the photoperiodic response was measured under the same laboratory conditions, the observed differences between populations most likely reflect genetic differences in sensitivity to photoperiodic cues, resulting from local adaptation to environmental cycles. The observed variability in diapause response combined with the availability of genomic tools for N. vitripennis represent a good opportunity to further investigate the genetic basis of this adaptive trait.

1. Diapause is a term used to describe an arrest in the development of insects as adults, eggs, or embryos, and allows survival during adverse environmental conditions. 2. The influence of maternal age on the proportion of eggs that entered an initial facultative diapause and on fecundity and egg mortality was investigated in the bushcricket Ephippiger ephippiger. 3. In the absence of variable abiotic cues such as temperature and photoperiod, most E. ephippiger females increase the proportion of their eggs that enter diapause as they age, however there are large differences among females, with a minority showing different trends. Fecundity and egg survival decline with female age and also differ among females. 4. The influence of age on the incidence of diapause is likely to be an adaptive reproductive strategy, as those eggs laid later in the season are unlikely to complete egg development before the onset of winter. Females are probably hedging their bets by diversifying the rate of development among their offspring and effectively spreading development over several seasons. The low predictability of future environmental conditions might explain the heterogeneity of female reproductive strategies.

Larvae of wild type (WT) strain of Chymomyza costata Zetterstedt (Diptera: Drosophilidae) enter diapause (stop developing) in response to short‐day signal at a constant 18 °C, whereas larvae of a non‐photoperiodic‐diapause (NPD) strain do not respond to photoperiodic signalling and continue in larval development irrespective of daylength. The present study shows that WT larvae also respond reliably to thermoperiodic signalling (daily cycles of temperature) under constant darkness, whereas the NPD larvae do not, suggesting that the pathways transducing the environmental token stimuli (photoperiod and thermoperiod) onto the diapause developmental programme might merge functionally in the central biological clock system known to be mutated in NPD strain. Temperature and larval population density modify the output of token stimuli signalling. High temperatures (>24 °C) tend to avert, whereas low temperatures (<18 °C), especially in combination with constant darkness, stimulate diapause induction in WT strain. Overcrowding (>200 larvae per 5 g of larval diet) lengthens the duration of larval development and induces a ‘diapause‐like’ developmental arrest of relatively weak intensity in up to 60% of larvae of both strains. At high temperatures (>30 °C), all WT larvae continue direct development but subsequently die during the pupal stage. Low temperature exposure (<12 °C) causes quiescence in the majority of the larvae of both strains. Starvation blocks development and causes mortality when applied in larvae younger than day 3 of the third instar. Older larvae survive starvation and their photoperiodically‐induced developmental pre‐programming is not affected. Collectively, the results show that diapause induction in C. costata is a result of various interacting effects of multiple environmental factors.

Summary We compare the effects of parental age on several offspring life history traits in two milkweed bug populations: a typically univoltine population ofOncopeltus fasciatus from the Sacramento Valley of California and a typically multivoltine population ofO. cingulifer from Monteverde, Costa Rica. Reared under identical conditions (27°C, 12 h light: 12 h dark photoperiod), these bugs exhibit significant differences in the effects of parental age on offspring life history. As they age,O. fasciatus females from Sacramento lay clutches of eggs of decreasing average weight and a decreasing proportion of their eggs produce offspring that survive to adulthood. Those offspring which do survive have a significantly faster developmental rate and females have a larger body size at adult eclosion. AsO. cingulifer from Monteverde age, they also produce lighter eggs, but there is no significant change in the offspring developmental rate, survival or female adult body size. We suggest that these results are largely explicable as the consequence of different parental investment strategies associated with the predictable relationship between parental age and time of season inO. fasciatus but not inO. cingulifer. AsO. fasciatus from Sacramento age, they may be increasing their investment per developing offspring so as to increase the probability that nymphs hatching late in the season will reach a prereproductive adult diapause before the first killing frost.
