In recent years there have been many changes to the ways that clinical veterinary science is conducted and nowhere is this more evident than in companion animal practice. Veterinarians working with pet dogs and cats are facing new challenges associated with the emergence and re-emergence of parasitic diseases. Some, such as Neospora caninum, have been recently recognised; others like Giardia and Cryptosporidium have been reported with increasing frequency, in part as a result of laboratory tests with improved sensitivity and specificity. In many regions, the emergence of parasitic diseases has been a consequence of pet travel and exotic diseases pose a unique diagnostic challenge for the veterinarian, as the index of suspicion for these conditions may be absent. The ranges of certain vector-borne diseases such as babesiosis, hepatozoonosis, ehrlichiosis, leishmaniasis and dirofilariasis are extending due to ecological and climatic changes and enhanced by animals with subclinical infection returning home from endemic areas. In companion animal practice, veterinarians have the additional responsibility of providing accurate information about the zoonotic transmission of parasite infections from pets, especially to those most vulnerable such as children, the elderly and the immunocompromised. Effective education is vital to allay public concerns and promote responsible pet ownership.  相似文献

The epidemiology of vector-borne diseases is complex due to the variability in the ecology of the different actors involved, i.e. hosts, parasites and vectors. The transmission of African animal trypanosomosis in the West-African savannah region is an excellent example of this complexity: riverine tsetse flies have an heterogeneous distribution along the rivers, depending of suitable habitats, and transmit pathogenic trypanosomes were they use domestic animal as feeding hosts. Contrasting epidemiological situations may thus occur at the local scale, and a broad view of the overall environment is necessary to quantify the interfaces in time and space between hosts and vectors. Geographical Information Systems (GIS) can provide new insight into the study of such complex epidemiological processes. GIS is a powerful technology that has been used mainly in map-making, and an enormous amount of knowledge can be gained simply by geographical data projection. GIS also allows juxtaposition of different types of information, creation of new variables, testing of theories and correlation, and generating of predictive models. The purpose of the present paper is to exemplify the potential application of GIS using a recent study carried out on animal trypanosomosis in a cattle-raising area of Burkina Faso.  相似文献

An expression signaling victory in agonistic encounters may help to establish status and dominance in a hierarchy. We investigated the possibility that an expression of triumph is such a signal. In Study 1, spontaneous expressions of athletes who had just won a medal at the 2004 Olympic Games were shown to three groups of observers who judged the emotion portrayed. All were given a set of common response alternatives that included Anger, Contempt, Disgust, Fear, Joy, Sadness, Surprise, Neutral, and Other. Group 1 was also given Pride, Group 2 Triumph, and Group 3 both Pride and Triumph. Group 1 labeled some expressions as pride, but Group 2 labeled all the expressions as triumph. For Group 3, some expressions were consistently labeled as triumph, and others as pride. Behavioral coding indicated that the expressions labeled triumph were distinct from other expressions. In Study 2, we replicated this finding with a judgment task involving more positive emotion choices to eliminate the possibility that the previous findings occurred because of a limited number of positive emotion labels. In Study 3, we replicated the findings again in two groups of observers from South Korea using two different judgment tasks. These findings suggest that triumph may have a unique nonverbal expression.  相似文献

Since the early 1980s, visceral leishmaniasis (VL) which is, in general, a rural zoonotic disease, has spread to the urban centers of the north, and now the south and west of Brazil. The principal drivers differ between cities, though human migration, large urban canid populations (animal reservoir), and a decidedly peripatetic and adaptable sand fly vector are the primary forces. The exact number of urban cases remains unclear as a result of challenges with surveillance. However, the number of urban cases registered continues to increase annually. Most control initiatives (e.g. culling infected dogs and household spraying to kill the sand fly) could be effective, but have proven hard to maintain at large scales due to logistical, financial and other reasons. In this article, the urbanization of VL in Brazil is reviewed, touching on these and other topics related to controlling VL within and outside Brazil.  相似文献

The recent advances in the investigation of tumor immunobiology have suggested that cancer chemotherapy, in addition to its well known cytotoxic activity, may play modulatory effects on the endogenous production of cytokines involved in the control of both tumor angiogenesis and antitumor immunity. Cancer chemotherapy constantly acts with inhibitory effects on anti-bacterial, anti-viral and anti- mycotic immune responses, whereas its action on anticancer immunity, which is mainly mediated by lymphocytes, has still to be better investigated and defined. The present study was carried out to evaluate the influence of chemotherapy on lymphocyte count and its relation to the clinical response in cancer patients suffering from the most commonly frequent tumor histotypes, including lung, colorectal, breast and prostate carcinomas. The study included 144 consecutive metastatic solid tumor patients. Lung cancer patients were treated with cisplatin plus gemcitabine, colorectal cancer patients received oxaliplatin plus 5-fluorouracil, while those affected by breast cancer or prostate carcinoma were treated with taxotere alone. An objective tumor regression was achieved in 66 out of 144 (46 percent) patients, whereas the remaining 78 patients had only a stable disease (SD)or a progressive disease. Independently of tumor histotype and chemotherapeutic regimen, a lymphocytosis occurred in patients who achieved an objective tumor regression in response to chemotherapy, and lymphocyte mean count observed at the end of the chemotherapeutic treatment was significantly higher with respect to the values seen before the onset of treatment. On the contrary, lymphocyte mean number decreased on chemotherapy in patients with SD or PD, even though the decline was statistically significant with respect to the pretreatment values in the only patients who had a PD in response to chemotherapy. This study would suggest that chemotherapy itself may paradoxically act, at least in part, as a cancer immunotherapy by inducing lymphocytosis, as well as previously demonstrated for the only immunotherapy with IL-2, probably by modulating the cytokine network and correcting the altered endogenous production of cytokines, responsible for cancer-related immunodeficiency.  相似文献

PEERs in Parasitology (PiP) is a global scientific grassroots organization founded in 2021 to promote equity and inclusion for persons (currently and) historically excluded from science because of ethnicity and/or race. The article details systemic obstacles PEER parasitologists face and current and future strategies of PiP to overcome them.  相似文献
