Halogenating activities detected in Antarctic macroalgae   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
 Halogenating activities were determined in samples of 18 cultivated species of brown, red and green macroalgae from the Antarctic. Activities for the halogenating organic compounds with bromide, iodide and chloride were found. Investigated red algae (rhodophytes) showed higher brominating and iodinating activities compared to brown (phaeophytes) and green (chlorophytes) algae. The highest brominating and iodinating activities were measured in the red algae Plocamium cartilagineum (1.11±0.01 U g-1 wet algal weight and 0.18 U g-1 wet algal weight, respectively) and Myriogramme mangini (3.62±0.17 U g-1 wet algal weight and 4.5 U g-1 wet algal weight, respectively). A method is described for the isolation of photosynthetically active chloroplasts from four species of brown algae: Fucus vesiculosis, Nereocystis luetkeana, Laminaria saccharina, and Macrocystis integrifolia. When compared to lettuce and spinach chloroplasts, the algal chloroplasts all showed lower activities for both photosystems II and I. Chloroplasts from all the plants produced H2O2, with photosystem I functioning as the O2 reductant in the light. In contrast to the green plants, however, brown algal chloroplasts strongly reduced O2 under conditions where both photosystems II and I remain active. Relative variable fluorescence values were lower both in intact plants and chloroplasts of the brown algae than for either spinach or lettuce. It is suggested that although light harvesting activities appear similar in all the plants, details of electron transport in brown algae may differ from those of green plants.  相似文献

Antioxidant activities of red versus green leaves in Elatostema rugosum   总被引:11,自引:2,他引:9  
Anthocyanin biosynthesis in leaves increases under stresses which also generate reactive oxygen species (ROS). In the present study the hypothesis that red leaves are better equipped to scavenge ROS than green leaves was tested. Antioxidants in leaf extracts from red and green morphs of Elatostema rugosum were identified, and activities quantified using enzymatic and α,α‐diphenyl‐β‐picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) assays and cyclic voltammetry. Red leaves from E. rugosum held greater amounts of superoxide dismutase, catalase, anthocyanins, and hydroxycinnamic acids, were significantly more effective at scavenging DPPH radicals, and produced higher voltammetric currents than green leaves. Anthocyanins contributed to the antioxidant pool more than all other constituent phenolics. Anthocyanin concentrations, and antioxidant activities declined with leaf age. Purified anthocyanin fractions displayed oxidative activities at both pH 7·0 and pH 5·5. Implications of the antioxidant potential of anthocyanin in its cytoplasmic and vacuolar locations are discussed.  相似文献

Powdered tissue from 46 species of air-dried marine algae (four green, 21 brown and 21 red algae) were screened for antitumor activity. Significant activity against Ehrlich carcinoma was found in the brown algae Scytosiphon lomentaria (69.8% inhibition), Lessonia nigrescens (60.0%), Laminaria japonica (57.6%), Sargassum ringgoldianum (46.5%), the red algae Porphyra yezoensis (53.2%) and Eucheuma gelatinae (52.1%) and the green alga Enteromorpha prolifera (51.7%). Five brown and four red algae showed appreciable antitumor activity against Meth-A fibrosarcoma. To identify specific molecules with antitumor activity, 15 kinds of polysaccharide preparations of seaweed origin and 24 kinds of lipid fractions extracted from various seaweeds were tested. Appreciable inhibition of Ehrlich carcinoma was found for fucoidan preparations from Undaria pinnatifida and Sargassum ringgoldianum, for carrageenans and for porphyran. Several glycolipid and phospholipid fractions from brown and red algae were effective against Meth-A fibrosarcoma.  相似文献

Abstract Among the brown algae, species of the Fucaceae (Pelvetia, Fucus and Ascophyllum) were found to have a ‘photosynthetic buffering’ system, allowing the algae to carry out oxygen production without a concomitant uptake of inorganic carbon. This system was not found in other brown algae examined (e.g. Halidrys, Laminaria and Desmarestia) nor in 16 examined species of red and green algae. Pelvetia, Fucus and Ascophyllum belong to the littoral algae which are periodically emersed. In the Fucaceae, the meristodermal cells were found to have a special organization of organelles. Towards the outer cell wall there was a prominent layer of mitochondria while the chloroplasts were concentrated towards the inner and side walls. Between the mitochondria and the chloroplasts there was a large number of physodes. This arrangement of organelles was not found in the other brown algae examined nor in red or green algae. The significance of this organization of the mitochondria is discussed in connection with the function of the ‘photosynthetic buffering’ system.  相似文献

The use of nitrogen‐to‐protein conversion factors (N‐Prot factors) is the most practical way of determining protein content. The accuracy of protein determination by this method depends on the establishment of N‐Prot factors specific to individual species. Experimental data are needed to allow the use of this methodology with seaweeds. The present study was designed to characterize the amino acid composition and to establish specific N‐Prot factors for six green, four brown and nine red marine algae. Mean values for individual amino acids tended to be similar among the three groups, but some differences were found. Green algae tended to show lower percentages of both aspartic acid and glutamic acid than the other two groups of algae. The percentages of both lysine and arginine were higher in red algae, while brown algae tended to show more methionine than green and red algae. The actual protein content of the species, based on the sum of amino acid residues, varied from 10.8% (Chnoospora minima, brown algae) to 23.1% (Aglaothamnion uru‐guayense, red algae) of the dry weight. Nitrogen‐to‐protein conversion factors were established for the species studied, based on the ratio of amino acid residues to total nitrogen, with values ranging from 3.75 (Cryptonemia seminervis, red algae) to 5.72 (Padina gymnospora, brown algae). The relative importance of non‐protein nitrogen is greater in red algae, and consequently lower N‐Prot factors were calculated for these species (average value 4.59). Conversely, protein nitrogen content in both green and brown algae tends to be higher, and average N‐Prot factors were 5.13 and 5.38, respectively. An overall average N‐Prot factor for all species studied of 4.92 ± 0.59 (n = 57) was established. This study confirms that the use of the traditional factor 6.25 is unsuitable for seaweeds, and the use of the N‐Prot factors proposed here is recommended.  相似文献

Foredunes, white-, grey- and brown dunes have an important function in coastal protection. Although a close syngenetic connection exists between these neighbouring ecosystems, they are considerably differentiated phytosociologically and ecologically. Whilst on foredunes and white dunes the predominating plant species are characteristic of Ammophiletea, on the grey dunes, species characteristic of the Festuco-Brometea and the Sedo-Scleranthetea are found, and on the brown dunes species of the Nardo-Callunetea.Going through the white-, grey- and brown dunes, the salt and lime content and the pH are decreasing. In grey- and brown dunes the formation of humus starts and a lower pH develops. On the grey dunes, which are sparsely vegetated, the air temperature, soil moisture, air moisture and evaporation are extremely fluctuating daily. The climate values in the brown dunes are relatively constant. Human activities, including overfishing and species introductions, have had a dramatic impact on benthic communities in the Gulf of Maine within the past two decades. Prior to the 1970s, the climax community in the shallow subtidal was composed of Laminaria spp. kelp beds with an understory of arborescent red algae. In the 1980s, a population explosion of the green sea urchin, Strongylocentrotus droebachiensis, created an alternate community state, urchin barrens. Recently, a new community has been observed in former urchin barrens and kelp beds. This assemblage is principally composed of the introduced species: Codium fragile subsp. tomentosoides (green alga), Membranipora membranacea (bryozoan), Diplosoma listerianum (tunicate), Bonnemaisonia hamifera (red alga) and the opportunistic species Mytilus edulis (mussel) and Desmarestia aculeata (brown alga). In addition to changes in relative abundance, many of these species have greatly expanded their distribution and habitat selection. A model detailing mechanisms for the transition of the traditional kelp bed and urchin barren communities to others is presented and implications for this new community are discussed. The use of different seaweeds such as Sargassum sp., Turbinaria conoides, and Ulva sp. in removing mercury(II) from aqueous solutions were investigated. The initial experimental runs, conducted at different equilibrium pH conditions, demonstrated that brown seaweeds outperformed green seaweed in Hg(II) biosorption at all pH conditions. In particular, at pH 5, maximum biosorption capacities of 170.3 and 145.8 mg/g were recorded for the brown seaweeds T. conoides and Sargassum sp., respectively, compared with 138.4 mg/g for the green seaweed Ulva sp. Isotherm data were modeled and interpreted using the Langmuir, Freundlich, Redlich-Peterson, and Toth models, with the latter described the Hg(II) isotherms with high correlation coefficients and low % error values. The kinetic data indicate the rapidity of the biosorption process, with the equilibrium achieved within 90 min. Several models, including the Elovich, pseudo-first-order, and pseudo-second-order models, were examined for their suitability with the present data; the correlation coefficient and % error values, along with better prediction of equilibrium uptake values, favored the pseudo-first-order model. The desorption experiments were highly successful for T. conoides biomass with 0.05 M HCl, whereas for the other two seaweeds, 0.05 M HCl resulted in high biomass weight loss. Reusing T. conoides biomass in three successive sorption-desorption cycles resulted in only 8.8% reduction in Hg(II) biosorption capacity compared with its original uptake.  相似文献

Carbonic anhydrase (CA) induction has been studied in three marine green algae under acidic (pH 4.5) or alkaline (pH 8.0) conditions. An inhibition of the induction of the external CA in acidic conditions, similar to that observed in some freshwater green algae, could be observed in only Chlorella saccharophila. In the two other species, Chlorococcum littorale and Stichococcus bacillaris, no significant difference in CA induction was found under two pH conditions. The exact function of the external CA of C. saccharophila remains unclear, since cells grown under acidic conditions (under which this enzyme is repressed) possess the same abilities to use inorganic carbon (Ci) as alkaline‐grown cells. Internal pH values were not modified by the pH of the medium used to cultivate C. saccharophila. Regardless of the growth conditions, activities related to carbon fixation, that is, photosynthetic oxygen evolution, Ci uptake and assimilation were enhanced when the measurements were performed at acidic pH. This indicates that this marine alga is able to use CO2 more efficiently than HCO3?. No evidence could be found for a specific Ci uptake and assimilation system in the acid‐grown cells.  相似文献

Abstract 1. Polymorphism has been described for a number of herbivorous insects, but little is known about whether differences in body colour cause fitness differences. In Chorthippus parallelus, three main colour morphs occur, namely brown, green, and dorsally striped. 2. The present study examined colour morph abundances and morph‐related differences in body size, oviposition rate, and offspring numbers in females of C. parallelus collected in 15 montane grasslands. The study also examined the effect of plant species richness, composition, community productivity, and solar radiation on colour morph frequency and fitness. 3. The relative frequencies of the three colour morphs was 31.7% (brown), 33.1% (green), and 35.2% (dorsally striped), but the morphs were not evenly distributed across the 15 sites. 4. There was no effect of the habitat variables on the distribution of the green and the striped morph in the study sites, however 80% of the variation in the abundances of the brown morph was explained by plant species richness and composition. 5. Grasshopper size was equal among the morphs. Brown females laid significantly more egg pods than the green and dorsally striped morphs. There were no significant differences in offspring numbers among the colour morphs. 6. Body colour in C. parallelus seems to be a fitness‐relevant trait, raising the question of the evolutionary maintenance of polymorphism.  相似文献

To improve the production of Kappaphycus plantlets in tissue culture, optimum media concentrations of an Ascophyllum nodosum extract (Acadian Marine Plant Extract Powder, AMPEP), plant growth regulators (PGR), pH–temperature combinations, and explant density were determined. Kappaphycus alvarezii var. tambalang purple (PUR), kapilaran brown (KAP), vanguard brown (VAN), adik-adik (AA), tungawan green (TGR), and K. striatum var. sacol green (GS) were used as explants. Based on the shortest period for shoot emergence and the economical use of AMPEP, the optimum enriched media was 3.0 mg L−1 AMPEP and 0.1 mg L−1 AMPEP + PGR 1 mg L−1 each phenylacetic acid (PAA) and zeatin for PUR, 1.0 mg L−1 AMPEP + PGR for KAP and GS, 0.1 mg L−1 AMPEP + PGR for VAN, and 3.0 mg L−1 AMPEP and 0.001 mg L−1 AMPEP + PGR for AA and TGR. Results showed that the addition of PGR to low concentrations of AMPEP hastened shoot formation. pH–temperature combinations for the most rapid shoot formation were determined for the brown (KAP) and purple (PUR) color morphotypes of K. alvarezii var. tambalang and the green morphotype of K. striatum var. sacol (GS) cultured in 1.0 mg L−1 AMPEP + PGR. The brown morphotype produced the most number of shoots at pH 7.7 at 20°C after as little as 20 days. Purple K. alvarezii showed an increased shoot formation at pH 6.7 at 25°C and the green K. striatum morphotype at pH 8.7 at 25°C. The optimum number of explants added to the culture media was also determined for tungawan green (TGR), brown (KAP), and tambalang purple (PUR) varieties of K. alvarezii in 1.0 mg L−1 AMPEP + PGR. The number of explants and the volume of the culture media combination were also tested. The highest average number of shoots formed occurred in two explants:1 mL culture media (2:1) for KAP and PUR (35.00% and 16.67%, respectively) and 1 explant: 2 mL culture media for the TGR (100.00%) with a range of 0.5–3.0 mm shoot length after 40 days in culture. The earliest shoot formation was observed after 21 days for the brown and 9 days for both the green and purple color morphotypes of Kappaphycus, in all densities investigated. This indicated that within the range tested, the density of explants did not have a significant effect on the rate of shoot formation but did influence the average number generated from the culture. The rate of production of new and improved Kappaphycus explants for a commercial nursery stock was improved through the use of AMPEP with optimized culture media pH, temperature, and density conditions.  相似文献

The antioxidant activity of eight edible species of Malaysian North Borneo seaweeds obtained from Sabah waters (Kudat, Tanjung Aru and Semporna) consisting of three red seaweeds (Eucheuma cottonii, E. spinosum and Halymenia durvillaei), two green seaweeds (Caulerpa lentillifera and C. racemosa) and three brown seaweeds (Dictyota dichotoma, Sargassum polycystum and Padina sp.) were determined. Methanol and diethyl ether were used as extraction solvent. The antioxidant activities were determined by two methods, TEAC (trolox equivalent antioxidant capacity) and FRAP (ferric reducing antioxidant power) assays. The total phenolic content of the extract was determined according to the Folin–Ciocalteu method and results were expressed as phloroglucinol equivalents. The methanolic extracts of green seaweeds, C. lentillifera and C. racemosa, and the brown seaweed, S. polycystum showed better radical-scavenging and reducing power ability, and higher phenolic content than the other seaweeds. The TEAC and FRAP assays showed positive and significantly high correlation (R 2 = 0.89). There was a strong correlation (R 2 = 0.96) between the reducing power and the total phenolic content of the seaweeds methanolic dry extracts. These seaweeds could be potential rich sources of natural antioxidants.  相似文献

  1. Ectothermic animals depend on external heat sources for pursuing their daily activities. However, reaching sufficiently high temperature can be limiting at high altitudes, where nights are cold and seasons short. We focus on the role of a green‐brown color polymorphism in grasshoppers from alpine habitats. The green‐brown polymorphism is phylogenetically and spatially widespread among Orthopterans and the eco‐evolutionary processes that contribute to its maintenance have not yet been identified.
  2. We here test whether green and brown individuals heat up to different temperatures under field conditions. If they do, this would suggest that thermoregulatory capacity might contribute to the maintenance of the green‐brown polymorphism.
  3. We recorded thorax temperatures of individuals sampled and measured under field conditions. Overall, thorax temperatures ranged 1.7–42.1°C. Heat up during morning hours was particularly rapid, and temperatures stabilized between 31 and 36°C during the warm parts of the day. Female body temperatures were significantly higher than body temperatures of males by an average of 2.4°C. We also found that brown morphs were warmer by 1.5°C on average, a pattern that was particularly supported in the polymorphic club‐legged grasshopper Gomphocerus sibiricus and the meadow grasshopper Pseudochorthippus parallelus.
  4. The difference in body temperature between morphs might lead to fitness differences that can contribute to the maintenance of the color polymorphism in combination with other components, such as crypsis, that functionally trade‐off with the ability to heat up. The data may be of more general relevance to the maintenance of a high prevalence polymorphism in Orthopteran insects.

The photosynthetic performance of macroalgae isolated in Antarctica was studied in the laboratory. Species investigated were the brown algae Himantothallus grandifolius, Desmarestia anceps, Ascoseira mirabilis, the red algae Palmaria decipiens, Iridaea cordata, Gigartina skottsbergii, and the green algae Enteromorpha bulbosa, Acrosiphonia arcta, Ulothrix subflaccida and U. implexa. Unialgal cultures of the brown and red algae were maintained at 0°C, the green algae were cultivated at 10°C. IK values were between 18 and 53 μmol m?2 s?1 characteristic or low light adapted algae. Only the two Ulothrix species showed higher IK values between 70 and 74 μmol m?2 s?1. Photosynthesis compensated dark respiration at very low photon fluence rates between 1.6 and 10.6 μmol m?2 s?1. Values of α were high: between 0.4 and 1.1 μmol O2 g?1 FW h?1 (μmol m?2 s?1)?1 in the brown and red algae and between 2.1 and 4.9 μmol O2 g?1 FW h?1 (μmol m?2 s?1)?1 in the green algal species. At 0°C Pmax values of the brown and red algae ranged from 6.8 to 19.1 μmol O2 g?1 FW h?1 and were similarly high or higher than those of comparable Arctic-cold temperate species. Optimum temperatures for photosynthesis were 5 to 10°C in A. mirabilis, 10°C in H. grandifolius, 15°C in G. skottsbergii and 20°C or higher in D. anceps and I. cordata. P: R ratios strongly decreased in most brown and red algae with increasing temperatures due to different Q10 values for photosynthesis (1.4 to 2.5) and dark respiration (2.5 to 4.1). These features indicate considerable physiological adaptation to the prevailing low light conditions and temperatures of Antarctic waters. In this respect the lower depth distribution limits and the northern distribution boundaries of these species partly depend on the physiological properties described here.  相似文献

Knowledge of the dietary habits of an endangered species is essential to its management and conservation. The brown bear (Ursus arctos) exists in two isolated population in Greece, but only initial management actions have been taken to improve the habitat of this species. To improve our understanding of the ecology and habitat requirements of this species, we examined the dietary habits of the brown bear in the Panagia-Grevena region, of Macedonia, Greece. In total, 360 scats of brown bear were collected between 2002 and 2004 during spring, summer and autumn months. Scats were analyzed by their frequency of occurrence, volumetric and dry weights, and their importance values. Microhistological analysis was applied to estimate the proportion of wild and cultivated plants in the diet. The most important type of food in the spring was green vegetation, while, in the summer, fruits of Pyrus sp., Morus sp., Prunus sp. and Rubus sp. were important food items. In autumn, hard masts, mainly oak (Quercus sp.), were essential foods for the brown bear. The frequency of vertebrates in the diet was higher in the summer and autumn while that of invertebrates was higher in the spring. In summary, the brown bear is an omnivorous species that lives in Greece and adapts its diet according to food availability and human activities in its habitat. For this reason, human activities in the study area must take the needs and requirement of brown bears into consideration.  相似文献

Soil pH was measured at two different spatial scales in coastal dunes on Norderney, North Sea, and in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Baltic Sea, Germany. Relationships between the variability in soil pH, species richness and species diversity are presented. Species richness and diversity were highest in grey dunes, where soil pH was at intermediate levels; both variables were lower in yellow and brown dunes. The variability in pH increased with increasing species diversity and also with scale. Overall, soil pH variability decreased with increasing vegetation cover. The lowest pH heterogeneity was found in heath dominated by Empetrum nigrum L. and grey dunes dominated by Campylopus introflexus (Hedw.) Brid. Increasing abundance of dominant species and decreasing species diversity of vegetation apparently reduces soil heterogeneity. Decreasing species diversity of vegetation is likely to explain decreasing variability in soil pH.  相似文献

The goal of this study was to determine if short‐term exposure of brook trout Salvelinus fontinalis and brown trout Salmo trutta to a lower pH than found in their source stream results in a shift in preference or avoidance pH. The lack of a shift in preference or avoidance pH of adult S. fontinalis and S. trutta suggests that these species can be held at a pH different from the source waterbody for a short period of time without altering preference or avoidance pH behaviour.  相似文献

A series of 14 day experiments was conducted on five common New Zealand fish species (redfin bully Gobiomorphus huttoni, inanga Galaxias maculatus, brown trout Salmo trutta, longfin eel Anguilla dieffenbachii and koaro Galaxias brevipinnis) to assess the effect of pH on survival and changes in body mass. No species survived in water of pH <4 although there was 100% survival of all adults at pH 4·5, G. maculatus larvae were also tested and had high mortality at this pH. Results suggest that adults are tolerant of low‐pH waters; however, successful remediation of anthropogenically acidified streams will require an understanding of the susceptibility to low pH on different life cycle stages.  相似文献
