Bonnet (Macaca radiata) and rhesus (Macaca mulatta) macaque females were observed during the breeding season to evaluate differences in mating strategies between females without infants and females with dependent offspring. Rhesus nonmothers participated in consortships earlier in the breeding season and initiated and received more approaches with adult males than rhesus mothers did. Bonnet nonmothers entered estrus earlier, began copulating earlier, and approached and presented to adult males more often than bonnet mothers did. Interacting with males frequently and early in in the breeding season may improve nonmothers' chances of conceiving and bringing offspring to term, with little competition from mother peers.  相似文献

Performance of major components of maternal care was evaluated quantitatively in several test situations for various groups of rats. Maternal behavior of concaveated ovaríectomized virgin females and castrated males was inferior on a variety of measures to that of concaveated intact virgin females. However, concaveated intact virgin females were markedly inferior to natural mothers on measures of nest building and responsiveness to an intruder. Thus, it was found that test situations other than the standard homecage test revealed previously undetected group differences and that the occurrence of pup retrieval is not a valid predictor of the performance of some major components of maternal care. In addition, it was concluded that gonadal hormones partially determine the quality of maternal responsiveness displayed by virgin females, but that gonadal hormones characteristic of the cycling female are not sufficient to increase maternal responsiveness to the level seen with natural mothers. Possible relationships between pup-induced maternal behavior and that of natural mothers are discussed.  相似文献

Infant and juvenile rhesus macaques exhibit many sexually dimorphic behaviors, including rough and tumble play, mounting, and time spent with nonmother females. This study investigated sex differences in infant rhesus monkey separation-rejection vocalizations (SRVs), and the effects of altering the prenatal hormone environment on these differences. Pregnant females received exogenous androgen (testosterone enanthate), an androgen antagonist (flutamide), or vehicle injections for 30 or 35 days during the second (early) or third (late) trimester of pregnancy. Control females used a greater percentage of coos and arched screams than did control males. In contrast, males used a greater percentage of geckers and noisy screams than did females. Females also had longer SRV bouts, used more calls, and used more types of vocalizations than did males. Mothers were more likely to respond to the SRVs of male infants than to the SRVs of female infants. Prenatal flutamide treatment early in gestation reduced the likelihood that mothers would respond to their male offspring, but prenatal androgen treatment had no effect on response rates of mothers to female offspring. Early, but not late, androgen treatment produced females who vocalized in a male-typical manner. Similarly, early flutamide treatment produced males who displayed more female-typical SRVs. Late flutamide treatments of females produced as much masculinization of SRVs as did early androgen treatment in females. These results demonstrate sex differences in highly emotional vocalizations in infant rhesus macaques and provide evidence that the timing and form of prenatal hormonal exposure influence such vocalizations.  相似文献

Subjective assessment of rhesus monkeys over four successive years   总被引:6,自引:0,他引:6
Using behaviourally-defined adjectives and a 7-point scale, observers rated all individuals over a year old in a colony of rhesus monkeys every November for four years. Principal component analyses of the ratings provided a basis for the following scores each year: CONFIDENT, EXCITABLE, and SOCIABLE. Two- and three-year old females had higher EXCITABLE scores than males, and adult males were more CONFIDENT than adult females. At all ages, CONFIDENT scores were stable from year to year, whereas EXCITABLE and SOCIABLE scores were not stable until adulthood. However for primiparous females, only their EXCITABLE scores were stable from the ante-natal to post-natal year. One-year males who had had adverse experience in their first eight months were more EXCITABLE, but no less CONFIDENT or SOCIABLE than control males. Finally, correlations between scores of mothers and their yearlings showed that CONFIDENT mothers had CONFIDENT infants and SOCIABLE mothers had SOCIABLE infants, but EXCITABLE mothers had infants who were not CONFIDENT. Scores of mothers and their 1-year olds were also significantly correlated with some measures of their social behaviour taken when the infants were 8, 16, and 52 weeks old.  相似文献

Several aspects of breeding-season relationships with mature females are described for free-ranging immature male rhesus monkeys (Macaca mulatta)on Cayo Santiago. At puberty, immature males are still groomed by mature females, as they were as infants, but no longer receive active protection from females other than their mothers. A further, potentially beneficial, aspect of their associations with females lies in the opportunities to observe closely the tactical social and sexual interactions of receptive females with adult males. However, immature males themselves rarely copulate with females. Developmental constraints may explain the finding that most females observed by immature males were relatives but that high-ranking males showed a particular preference for adolescent relatives, whereas the preference of low-ranking males was for adult relatives. A further finding was that while there was a tendency for immature males to devote a greater proportion of their total observation time to females that ranked above their mothers than to those of inferior rank, these were also the females from which males received the most aggression, while most of the females with which the males groomed or copulated were lower ranking than the males’ mothers. Of three hypotheses concerning three possible types of social constraint which might account for such a finding, the data supported only one—that particular levels of aggression within these relationships are compatible only with certain other elements (observations), and not with others (grooming, copulation).  相似文献

This report outlines a comparison of renal weight and volume and selected skeletal parameters to sex in 22 adult male and 156 adult female rhesus macaques. Means and standard deviations for kidney weight and volume, body weight, and radiographic measurements for both males and females are reported. Ninety-five percent confidence intervals and P-values for the mean differences between the sexes for these parameters were also compiled. Male monkeys were larger, but had kidneys of similar size to those of the females. Joint distributions of the radiographic measurements of the first lumbar vertebra and the skull showed that males were larger in both measurements. The distributions of these parameters were clearly separate in males and females, while joint distributions of kidney weight and volume for males and females overlapped almost completely. We found that, regardless of age, sex, weight, or skeletal size, all normal adult rhesus monkeys generally have similar-sized kidneys.  相似文献

Gonadally intact pseudohermaphroditic female and normal female and neonatally castrated male rhesus monkeys were given estrogen treatment as adults and evaluated for attractivity, proceptivity, and receptivity during tests with a tethered stud male. Pseudohermaphrodites were produced by injecting their mothers during pregnancy with either testosterone propionate (TP) or dihydrotestosterone propionate (DHTP). Castrated males had reliably lower attractivity than normal females on all indicator responses shown by the tethered males. Additionally, castrated males showed reliably fewer proceptive responses on 4 of 5 measures than normal females. Receptivity could not be assessed in this situation for castrated males, because tethered males never contacted them unless the castrated males were displaying presentation. No reliable differences were observed between pseudohermaphrodites produced by prenatal treatments with TP or DHTP. Pseudohermaphrodites generally showed reliably less attractivity and proceptivity than normal females and reliably more of these traits than castrated males. Attractivity scores for pseudohermaphrodites were not different from those for normal females until proximity to the tethered male was established. Receptivity was not different in pseudohermaphrodites compared with normal females. Results indicate prenatal androgenization and its developmental sequelae lead to a defeminization in adulthood which, in this testing situation, was principally manifested by a deficiency in the performance of proceptive behaviors. Additionally, defeminization in rhesus monkeys, unlike that demonstrated in rodents, does not depend upon actions of an aromatizable androgen.  相似文献

The co-feeding relationships of immature Japanese monkeys in the provisioned situation were studied. The most frequent co-feeders for immature females were diversified as compared to those for immature males. The number of immature females who showed strong co-feeding relationships with their mothers gradually decreased with age in both high- and middle/low-ranking matrilines, but the percent decrease was greater for middle/low-ranking immatures. Almost all immature females who displayed strong co-feeding relationships with adult males were from middle/low-ranking matrilines. Strong co-feeding relationships with mothers among immature males from high-ranking matrilines remained until 4 years of age. In contrast, strong co-feeding relationships with mothers among middle/low-ranking immature males decreased rapidly in the first year of life, and most 1- to 4-year-olds showed no strong co-feeding relationships with other group members. It is considered that middle/low-ranking mothers may not provide their immatures with a secure base for obtaining food in the provisioned situation.  相似文献

The present study describes key aspects of the biology of Leipothrix dipsacivagus, an eriophyid mite that is under study as a biological control candidate of Dipsacus fullonum and D. laciniatus (Dipsacaceae). Preliminary host-specificity tests have shown that it can develop and reproduce only on Dipsacus spp. (teasels). Studies were conducted in a laboratory at 26 ± 2oC with 16 h of light per day. Mites for the stock colony were collected from D. laciniatus in Klokotnitsa, Bulgaria and reared on rosettes of D. laciniatus in the laboratory. Unfertilized L. dipsacivagus females reared in isolation from the juvenile stage produced male offspring only, while progeny of fertilized females were of both sexes, suggesting arrhenotokous parthenogenesis with haplodiploid sex determination. Experiments were designed to compare male progeny from fertilized females to males from unfertilized females and to compare males and females from fertilized females. Male progeny of virgin mothers had significantly longer durations of active immature stages and total egg-to-adult period than male progeny of fertilized females. Female progeny had significantly longer durations of egg incubation, active immature stages and egg-to-adult period than male progeny from fertilized mothers. Adult longevity was significantly greater in females than in males. Fertilized females produced significantly more eggs per day and overall than virgin females. The results of this study suggest that fertilization status of L. dipsacivagus females can affect both their own fecundity and the development of their male progeny.  相似文献

When one-year old rhesus monkeys and their mothers were removed from the colony to a strange situation, infants' activity was initially low compared with behaviour six days later. Although absolute values did not differ between males and females, correlations did. That is, three days after return to the colony, correlations with baseline colony behaviour were significantly positive for females, while males had one significantly negative correlation. On the other hand, males had more significant correlations than females when behaviour in the strange situation was correlated with colony scores. Of the six individuals that had adverse early experience, five showed extreme behaviour. The exception was CT, son of a female with a very low ‘excitable’ score. In fact for all males, mothers' colony scores were significantly correlated with sons' behaviour in the strange situation.  相似文献

Although mate preferences are most commonly examined in females, they are often found in both sexes. In the parasitoid wasp Urolepis rufipes, both female and male mating status affected certain aspects of sexual interactions. Female mating status mattered only in the later stages of mating. Males did not discriminate between virgin and mated females in terms of which they contacted or mounted first. However, once mounted, most virgin females were receptive to copulation, whereas very few mated females were. Whether a male’s mating status affected his own sexual response depended on the female’s ability to respond and the stage of mating. Examining male behavior toward dead females allowed elimination of the role of female behavior in how males responded. Virgin and mated males are both attracted to dead females as evidenced by their fanning their wings at such females. However, mated males were quicker than virgin males to contact and to mount in an experiment with dead females, whereas there was no such differential response in an experiment with live females. This difference is consistent with greater female sexual responsiveness to virgin males. Male mating status also affected female receptivity to copulate. Once mounted, live virgin females were less likely to become receptive to copulation by mated males than to virgin males, but only in a choice experiment, not in a no-choice experiment.  相似文献

The influence of mating on the extent to which males are attracted to females in Trigonotylus caelestialium (Heteroptera: Miridae) was examined. No differences in attraction of males to mated and virgin females were observed within 3–5 h of mating, but males became less attracted to females 1 to 2 days after the first mating. The difference in male attraction to mated vs virgin females disappeared at 4 days after mating. These results indicate that reduced attraction of males to mated females occurs after a certain time interval, and persists for a few days. Furthermore, males were less attracted to females that had mated with virgin vs recently mated males, i.e. males that had just mated with another female at 1 and 2 days after mating. The ejaculate expenditure of recently mated males was less than that of virgin males. Hence, the amount of male ejaculate transferred to females during mating, rather than the act of mating, might influence the attraction of males to females. The results demonstrate that mating reduces the attraction of males to females in T. caelestialium on the basis of direct observation of male behavior.  相似文献

Results of previous studies have shown that in captive groups of rhesus monkeys (Macaca mulatto)fathers associate more frequently with their own offspring than with those of other males and that mothers are most permissive of physical contact between their own infant and a juvenile when that juvenile shares the same father with her infant. These two observations suggest that the identity of offspring born in captive groups of rhesus monkeys is recognized by at least some adult members of the group. Consistent patterns of mating among mating seasons might explain this apparent recognition of offsprings’ paternity. Fathers, for example, might regularly associate with young who maintain a close relationship with females with whom they have previously mated, and mothers might selectively permit juveniles who maintain a close relationship with males with whom they have previously mated to associate with their infants. This hypothesis is tested in this paper by comparing the observed distribution of 70 maternal sibships, members of which were fathered by the same or by different adult males over a 4-year period in six captive groups of rhesus monkeys, with that distribution expected based on random mating from season to season. Seasonal mating patterns were found to be random. Preparations are now underway to test this hypothesis in several free-ranging groups.  相似文献

The relationships of 42 rhesus monkey mother-infant dyads were examined to investigate the effects of the mothers' parity. Primiparous mothers were found to be younger, more excitable and less confident than the multiparous mothers. They also received more aggression from other adult females living in their social group and were more anxious about their infants, approaching and leaving them more frequently. The primiparous mothers protected their daughters more than the multiparous mothers and their daughters correspondingly spent more time in the ventro-ventral position and more time on the nipple. Their sons however spent less time in contact with their mothers than did the sons of the multiparous mothers. Although the primiparous mothers protected their daughters more than their sons, for the multiparous mothers the converse was true and sons received more maternal protection. It is suggested that the greater protectiveness of the multiparous mothers towards male infants may be a consequence of the interest siblings have in males, whereas the greater protectiveness of primiparous mothers to daughters may stem from their greater vulnerability to attacks from adult females. The importance of mother-mediated sibling influences may explain the lack of strong parity differences in previous studies.  相似文献

Dominance relationships were studied in a rhesus monkey group during five consecutive years. The group consisted of eight stable matriarchies and an adult male class which was replaced at the start, and again at the midpoint, of the study. Immature males were selectively harvested to maintain a sex ratio typical of natural troops. Maximum group size during the study was 77 animals.Dominance relationships were remarkably stable, with only 4.4% of dyads failing to show unidirectional relationships. Despite this stability, a linear ranking of all group members was not possible. Male dominance relationships with other males were among the most stable, following the fighting which ensued on male introductions. Male introductions did not disrupt female dominance relationships.Adult female dominance relationships were also quite stable, but immature females slowly achieved dominance over older sisters and females subordinate to their mothers. Such reversals were the result of processes lasting over many months. Many dominance assertions occurred prior to puberty but a significant number occurred following sexual maturity. Maturing females did not reverse dominance relationships according to any particular hierarchial order and, as a consequence, many were subordinate to animals that were dominated by others that they dominated.Although there was an alpha male that was dominant to all animals in the group, adult females dominated most adult males. Adult males, however, often reciprocated aggression directed at them. They almost invariably threatened or countercharged aggressive immature animals regardless of matriarchial membership. Adult males dominated some adult and most young females, even in families containing matriarchs and adult females to which the adult males always submitted. The dominance relationships of young males were similar to those of their sisters, until puberty. Young males did not necessarily bypass adult males that their mothers outranked, and often failed to win against adult females that their mothers dominated. Adolescent female aggression against females is seldom interfered with by adult males, and females may actively aid one another against males. In contrast, the aggression of young males often elicits interference by adult males, and young males often become the targets of redirected aggression in the group. As a consequence, whereas young females rise in rank to positions adjacent to their mothers, adolescent males often suffer losses to animals that they had dominated as juveniles.  相似文献

Sexual selection has often been dichotomized into intersexual and intrasexual components of selection, favoring ornaments and weapons, respectively. Here, we show that a weapon used in male–male combat is sometimes also used in a functionally similar manner for grasping females during mating. The hind legs of adult males of some species of Pristoceuthophilus camel crickets have strongly bent tibia and stout femora with two large conspicuous spines. Here, we show that (1) leg armature is positively allometric, (2) males use these leg modifications when fighting other males, (3) males sometimes use the same leg modifications in the same functional manner for grabbing and holding females for mating, (4) virgin females show more interest in males than do non‐virgin females, and (5) males are more likely to use their leg modifications to grab and hold females when paired with non‐virgin females than when paired with virgin females. We interpret these results as suggesting that males employ an alternative coercive mating strategy when paired with unreceptive females; alternative explanations are also discussed.  相似文献

Determining whether reproductive isolation evolves through mate choice and/or gametic factors that prevent fertilization or through the post‐zygotic mechanisms of hybrid sterility or inviability is fundamental to understanding speciation. Investigation of the pre‐ and post‐zygotic components of reproductive isolation is facilitated in the pseudoscorpion, Cordylochernes scorpioides, by its indirect method of sperm transfer and viviparous embryonic development. Previous research on this species, in which mate discrimination was assessed in virgin females, suggested that female choice played only a minor role in reproductive isolation between populations from French Guiana and Panamá. Here, in a study of three allopatric populations of C. scorpioides from Panamá, we assessed mating‐stage isolation in both virgin and once‐mated females, and found that female discrimination depends critically on mating status. Virgin females were almost invariably receptive, showing no tendency to discriminate against males from allopatric populations. By contrast, non‐virgin females were significantly more likely to reject foreign males than males from their own population. Male sexual motivation could not account for differences in either female sexual receptivity or male success in sperm transfer. Allopatric and sympatric males did not differ in number of spermatophores deposited as either a female’s first or second mate. Nonetheless, allopatric males achieved significantly lower sperm transfer success not only with choosy, non‐virgin females but also with virgin females. Given the lack of behavioral discrimination by virgin females, female receptivity was not the only factor influencing differences in sperm transfer success. Multivariate analysis of spermatophore morphology suggests that the higher failure rate of matings between allopatric males and virgin females resulted from population differences in sperm packet architecture. Overall, our findings indicate that assessment of discrimination against allopatric males that is limited to virgin females may seriously underestimate the contribution of female mate choice to reproductive isolation between populations.  相似文献

Finding mates is frequently problematic for parasitoid wasps. In some parasitoid species, males rely on volatile, airborne sex pheromones for locating mates, while in others they rely on contact, trail sex pheromones. This study sought to shed light on the mate finding mechanism of males of Aphytis melinus. Specifically, the goal was to determine whether A. melinus males use airborne or contact pheromones, or both, for locating mates. The study showed that A. melinus males rely on a contact, trail sex pheromone for locating mates: A. melinus males responded to substrate-borne cues left by virgin females, while they did not respond to airborne cues from virgin females. Specifically, males more frequently encountered virgin females when the females walked across an arena to a fixed encounter point compared to when they were manually placed at the encounter point, and spent greater than expected time on surfaces previously visited by virgin females compared to control surfaces not visited by females. In contrast, males did not respond to airborne cues from virgin females in an airflow olfactometer nor to traps baited with virgin females in the field, and spent similar lengths of time on surfaces visited by newly-mated or 24-h mated females versus control surfaces not visited by females. The main effect of the trail sex pheromone on the behavior of A. melinus males was to direct their search and, so, increase the likelihood of encountering mates. This effect apparently is not preceded by longer-range attraction of males via an airborne female sex pheromone. Overall, the results of this study support a hypothesis in which A. melinus males searching on substrates on which females may be present rely exclusively on a trail sex pheromone to locate mates.  相似文献
