Female parent-offspring phenotypic data on color morph frequencies in the red-backed salamander, Plethodon cinereus, were obtained from two Virginia localities (164 broods from Greene County and 97 broods from Giles County). The color morph data indicate that the striped morph is genetically dominant in Giles County and recessive in Greene County. It is suggested that epistatic interaction of two or more loci is responsible for the difference between the localities.  相似文献

The amino acid sequence of human pancreatic secretory trypsin inhibitor [Pubols, M. H., Bartelt, D. C., and Greene, L. J. (1974) J. Biol. Chem., 249, 2235–2242] was determined by a combination of selective trypsin and chymotrypsin hydrolysis reactions on the S-2-aminoethylcysteinyl inhibitor and conventional methods (subtractive Edman degradation and exopeptidase hydrolysis) for sequence determination of small peptides. The peptides were ordered on the basis of the identification of the amino- and carboxyterminal residues of the products at each stage of the degradation procedure. The sequence determination was carried out on a mixture of chromatographic forms present in both tissue and pancreatic juice which are identical in amino acid composition, aminoterminal residues, molecular weight, and specific activity, but differ only in asparagine content and susceptibility to enzymatic hydrolysis. The amino acid sequence of the human inhibitor corresponding to chromatographic form A3 has been shown to be NH2

The chemical composition of the essential oils obtained by hydrodistillation from leaves, branches and female cones of Cupressus arizonica Greene cultivated in Tunisia was determined by GC and GC/MS analysis. Significant differences were found between the constituent percentages of the different oils. Among the 87 identified components α-pinene (60.5% in female cones), umbellulone (18.4% in leaves), δ-3-carene (15.6% in branches) and cis-muurola-4(14),5-diene (9.4% in leaves) were found to be the major ones.Composition of essential oils extracted from different organs of C. arizonica Greene growing in Tunisia showed remarkable differences from the same species cultivated in Algeria, Argentina, Iran, Italy, France and Texas based on a comparison with published results. The in vitro antibacterial activity of the essential oils samples was evaluated against some Gram positive and negative bacteria.  相似文献

TheAntennaria rosea species complex is circumscribed to contain four subspecific taxa. A complete synonymy and key to the subspecies ofA. rosea is presented. The following new combinations are proposed:Antennaria rosea subsp.arida (E. Nels.) R. Bayer,A. rosea subsp. confinis (Greene) R. Bayer, andA. rosea subsp. pulvinata (Greene) R. Bayer. The kaurene synthetase from immature seeds of Marah macrocarpus (Greene) Greene was partially purified from cell-free homogenates of endosperm by a combination of QAE-Sephadex A-25 chromatography and hydroxyapatite chromatography and freed of contaminating phosphatase activity. The two catalytic activities associated with kaurene synthetase, the cyclization of geranylgeranyl-pyrophosphate to copalyl-pyrophosphate (activity A) and the cyclization of copalyl-pyrophosphate to ent-kaurene (activity B), were not even partially resolved from one another during these procedures. Both activities had identical elution profiles from a calibrated Sepharose 4B column corresponding to a molecular weight less than that of ovalbumin (45,000).  相似文献

A new species,Erigeron astranthioides, apparently endemic to the Sierra Madre of central Durango, is described and illustrated. It is contrasted withE. forreri (Greene) Greene andAstranthium, both of which are similar, though apparently through convergence. The new species is part of a lineage that includes six other primarily epapposeErigeron species mostly from the western Sierra Madre; within this group its closest relative appears to beE. mimus (S. Thirteen species of blue-eyed grasses had been described for the Pacific Northwest prior to this study. Contemporary taxonomic treatments vary; some authors recognize several of the taxa as valid species, others recognize only one highly variable, widely distributed species. Work has been directed to achieve an understanding of the biological integrity of all previously described species within the northwest. Living plants from natural populations were utilized in controlled artificial hybridization experiments, analysis of breeding systems, and cytological investigations. Hybrids of intraand interspecific crosses were examined for pollen fertility, and investigated cytologically for meiotic behavior. Eight genetically compatible groups are indicated from these experiments. Additional information gained from cytological analysis, breeding systems, ecology, distribution, and morphological studies substantiates the recognition of each genetically compatible group at the specific level, including the new species,S. hitchcockii, from southern Oregon. The following taxa are recognized for the Pacific Northwest: tetraploids (n = 16)S. bellum S. Wats.,S. halophilum Greene,S. septentrionale E. P. Bicknell; octoploids (n = 32)S. idahoense E. P. Bicknell (including the vars.segetum,macounii, andoccidentale), andS. hitchcockii D. Henderson; duodecaploids (n = 48)S. idahoense E. P. The N-terminal segment of human interleukin-2 (hIL-2) appears to mediate binding of the beta hIL-2 receptor (R. Robb, C. Rusk, J. Yodoi, and W. Greene, Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. USA 84:2002-2006, 1987). An affinity-purified antibody prepared against this peptide segment (p81) is shown here to cross-react with a homologous region of the human T-cell leukemia virus type I (HTLV-I) envelope glycoprotein, raising the interesting possibility that the envelope glycoprotein of HTLV-I can interact with the beta hIL-2 receptor.  相似文献

Computerization of the Edward Lee Greene Herbarium at Notre Dame is described. Reasons for the justification of such a project and the steps involved in data accumulation and data processing are presented. Results are or will be available in two forms: 1) formal publications containing summary information, including information on the more than 4400 taxa that Greene named; and 2) a computerized data bank that today can provide answers to questions from individual systematists about the 65,000 specimens. Problems in automation are discussed, as are the relation of this project to similar ones. Finally, an invitation is extended to readers to query the data bank without cost.  相似文献

Four forms of pancreatic secretory trypsin inhibitor (PSTI; A1, A2, B, and C) were purified from human pancreatic juice. According to sequence results, the primary structure of B was different from that reported earlier (Greene, L.J., et al. (1976) Method Enzymol. 45, 813-825) at two positions, i.e. Asn21----Asp21, Asp29----Asn29. A1 and A2 were deamidated forms of B judging from peptide mappings with Staphylococcus aureus V8 protease. Gln45 in B was replaced by Glu in A1 and Gln51 in B was replaced by Glu in A2. C was an inhibitor lacking five amino acid residues from the amino terminal of B. B and C inhibited human cationic trypsin activity stoichiometrically with similar dissociation constants, but A1 and A2 showed poorer trypsin inhibitory activity than B and C.  相似文献

The monomer fluorescence of N-(1-pyrenyl)maleimide-labeled tropomyosin bound to F-actin (PTm-actin) increases when myosin subfragment 1 (S1) binds to actin and is half complete when only approximately 1 S1 is bound to 7 actin subunits [Ishii, Y., & Lehrer, S. S. (1985) Biochemistry 24, 6631-6638]. Similar studies of the binding of S1 and S1-ADP to fully reconstituted thin filaments [PTm-actin-troponin (Tn)] are now reported. The pyrene monomer fluorescence change was half complete when approximately 0.5 S1/7 actin subunits and approximately 1.5 S1/7 actin subunits were bound in the presence and absence of Ca2+, respectively. In the presence of Mg2+-ADP, when S1 binding is weakened, the S1 binding profiles and fluorescence changes were sigmoidal, with the cooperative transitions occurring at lower [S1] in the presence of Ca2+ as first shown by Greene and Eisenberg for S1 binding [Greene, L., & Eisenberg, E. (1980) Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. U.S.A. 77, 2616-2620]. It was possible to fit both the binding and fluorescence data with the same parameters of a two-state (weak and strong S1 binding) cooperative binding model [Hill, T., Eisenberg, E., & Greene, L. (1980) Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. U.S.A. 77, 3186-3190] for each Ca2+ situation if the fluorescence change is interpreted as the fraction of tropomyosin (Tm) units in the strong S1 binding state. These data indicate that the fluorescence change is a direct measure of the S1-induced change of state of Tm in the fully reconstituted thin filament.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

Ernst Mayr's historical writings began in 1935 with his essay Bernard Altum and the territory theory and have continued up through his monumentalGrowth of Biological Thought (1982) and hisOne Long Argument: Charles Darwin and the Genesis of Modern Evolutionary Thought (1991). Sweeping in their scope, forceful in their interpretation, enlisted on behalf of the clarification of modern concepts and of a broad view of biology, these writings provide both insights and challenges for the historian of biology. Mayr's general intellectual formation was guided by the GermanBildung ideal, with its emphasis on synthetic and comprehensive knowledge. His understanding of how to write history was inspired further by the example of the historian of ideas Arthur Lovejoy. Some strengths and limitations of this approach are explored here through attention to Mayr's treatment of the French biologist J.-B. Lamarck. It is contended that Mayr's contributions to the history of biology are not restricted to his own very substantial historical writings but also include his encouragement of other scholars, his development of an invaluable archive of scientific correspondence, and his insistence that historians who write about evolution and related subjects acquire an adequate understanding of the principles of Darwinian biology.This paper was originally delivered at the biennial meeting of the International Society for the History, Philosophy, and Social Studies of Biology, held in Brandeis in July 1993, in the special session organized by John Greene on Ernst Mayr's contributions to systematics, evolutionary theory, and the history and philosophy of biology. The paper is presented here with only slight modifications of the original, oral presentation. As indicated in the text, a full assessment of Mayr's historical work, including situating that work in the context of Mayr's other work and contemporary developments in the history of science, would require a much more extensive study than I have been able to undertake here.  相似文献

In order effectively to list and comment on the results of cytological investigations inAster in a companion paper, a scheme of infrageneric classification is presented which utilizes the basic chromosome number as a pivotal diagnostic character. Reasons are stated as to why, with the exception ofUnamia Greene which is transferred toSolidago, and the commonly recognized generaLeucelene Greene,Machaeranthera Nees andXylorhiza Nutt., none of the segregate genera previously proposed or recorded in the literature is upheld. Instead, these taxa are being given subgeneric or sectional rank. Two additional subgenera are established to accommodate the species groups traditionally placed in “Aster proper,” which are characterized by having basic chromosome numbers ofx = 5 andx = 8, respectively. Altogether ten subgenera of the genusAster, five of them subdivided further into a total of 24 sections, are recognized as having representative species in the New World. All basionyms and type species are listed, and a number of new combinations and status changes are validated in accordance with the International Rules of Botanical Nomenclature. Where known (from literature and personal research), chromosome numbers are recorded for the species.  相似文献
