BackgroundOnychocryptosis (ingrown toenail) and onychomycosis are common pathologies of the toenail and affecting many people. Since levels of trace elements have been shown to vary in certain diseases, in the presented work, chromium (Cr), copper (Cu), iron (Fe), magnesium (Mg), manganese (Mn), selenium (Se), and zinc (Zn) levels of toenail and serum samples of healthy individuals and patients with onychocryptosis and onychomycosis were compared.MethodsSerum and toenail samples of 88 voluntary subjects (healthy n = 24; onychomycosis n = 24; onychocryptosis n = 40) aged between 19–80 years were collected. Levels of trace elements in the samples were analyzed by using an inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectrophotometer (ICP-OES Thermo iCAP - 6000). The differences in medians between the groups for elements were evaluated with Kruskal -Wallis H test with post hoc for pairwise comparisons in SPSS 18.ResultsMg (p < 0.001) and Mn (p = 0.002) levels were significantly increased whereas Zn (p = 0.011) level was decreased in toenails of patients with onychomycosis compared to healthy subjects. Although Mg and Mn levels were higher in female subjects with onychomycosis (p = 0.001; p = 0.019), Mn was only increased in male subjects (p = 0.015). Mg was the only trace element found to be independent of sex, age, and smoking status in patients with onychomycosis. However, no significant difference has been found in serum trace element levels neither between any groups nor toenail trace element levels of patients with onychocryptosis and healthy subjects.ConclusionAs a response of the human body to pathogens like fungi in toenails, Mg, Mn and Zn levels vary. Especially the role of Mg ions in onychomycosis needs to be investigated more specifically.  相似文献

The interactions of the S100 protein (S100) with metal cations such as Ca2+, Mg2+, Zn2+ and K+ were studied by the metal n.m.r. spectroscopy. The line widths of 43Ca, 25Mg, 67Zn and 39K n.m.r. markedly increased by adding all S100s. A broad 43Ca n.m.r. band of Ca(2+)-S100a solution was not affected by Zn2+ and K+, while it was greatly decreased by adding Mg2+. The 43Ca n.m.r. spectra of Ca(2+)-S100a0 and -S100b solutions consisted of two slow-exchangeable signals which corresponded to Ca2+ bound to two environmentally different sites of the S100a0. These two 43Ca n.m.r. signals were not affected by Zn2+ and K+. The line width of broad 25Mg n.m.r. band of the Mg(2+)-S100 solution greatly decreased by adding Ca2+, while it did not change by adding Zn2+ and K+. Further, the addition of Ca2+, Mg2+ and K+ did not affect the line width of the 67Zn n.m.r. of the Zn(2+)-S100 solutions. These findings suggest that: (1) Mg2+ binds to all S100s, and at least one of the Mg2+ binding sites of S100 molecule is the same as the Ca2+ binding site; (2) Zn2+ binds to S100s, although the binding site(s) is/are different from Ca(2+)- or Mg(2+)-binding site(s), and the environment of Zn2+ nuclei will not change even though Ca2+ binds to S100s.  相似文献

BackgroundEssential trace elements and minerals play a significant role in neurodevelopment. Although certain studies demonstrated impaired essential trace element and mineral status in children with ADHD, the existing data are insufficient. The objective of the present study was to assess serum trace element and mineral levels in children with ADHD.MethodsSerum trace element and mineral levels in 68 children with ADHD and 68 neurotypical controls were assessed using ICP-MS at NexION 300D (PerkinElmer Inc., USA) equipped with ESI SC-2 DX4 autosampler (Elemental Scientific Inc., USA).ResultsSerum Cr, Mg, and Zn levels in children with ADHD were 21 % (p = 0.010), 4 % (p = 0.005), and 7 % (p = 0. 001) lower as compared to the healthy controls, respectively. In turn, serum Cu/Zn values were 11 % higher than those in the control group. Age and gender had a significant impact on serum element levels in ADHD. Particularly, preschool children were characterized by significantly increased Cu (+8 %; p = 0.034), and Cu/Zn (+19 %; p < 0.001) values, whereas serum Zn (-9 %; p = 0.004) level was decreased. In primary school-aged children only 6 % (p = 0.007) lower Mg levels were observed. Both boys and girls with ADHD were characterized by 8 % (p = 0.016) lower serum Zn levels and 10 % (p = 0.049) higher Cu/Zn values when compared to neurotypical girls. Boys with ADHD also had significantly higher Cu/Zn, exceeding the respective control values by 12 % (p = 0.021), predominantly due to a 7 % (p = 0.035) decrease in serum Zn. Serum Mg levels were also found to be significantly lower than those in neurotypical children by 5 % (p = 0.007). In adjusted regression models serum Cr (β=-0.234; p = 0.009) and Cu/Zn (β = 0.245; p = 0.029) values were significantly associated with ADHD, respectively. Two-way ANOVA revealed a significant impact of ADHD on Cr, Mg, Zn, and Cu/Zn, whereas age was associated with Cu, I, Mg, Mo, and Cu/Zn, whereas gender accounted only for variability in serum Mn levels. Principal component analysis (PCA) also revealed significant contributions of Mg, Zn, and Cu/Zn values to ADHD variability.ConclusionsHypothetically, the observed decrease of essential trace elements, namely Mg and Zn, and elevation of Cu/Zn may significantly contribute to the risk of ADHD or its severity and/or comorbidity.  相似文献

BackgroundType 1 diabetes (T1D) exhibited sex-specific metabolic status including oxidative stress with dynamic change of trace elements, which emphasized the importance of the evaluation of trace elements according to sex. Besides, the most significant characteristic, insulin auto-antibodies, could not be found in all T1D patients, which needed the auxiliary prediction of clinical parameters. And it would benefit the early detection and treatment if some high-risk groups of T1D could predict and prevent the occurrence of disease through common clinical parameters. Hence, there was an urgent need to construct more effective and scientific statistical prediction models to serve clinic better. This study aimed to evaluate the sex-specific levels of trace elements and the relationship between trace elements and clinical parameters in T1D, and construct sex-specific auxiliary prediction model combined with trace elements and clinical parameters.MethodsA total of 105 T1D patients with negative insulin auto-antibodies and 105 age/sex-matched healthy individuals were enrolled in First Hospital of Jilin University. Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry was performed for the measurement of calcium (Ca), magnesium (Mg), zinc (Zn), copper (Cu), iron (Fe), selenium (Se) in the serum, and the data of clinical parameters were received from medical record system. The lambda-mu-sigma method was used to evaluate the relationship between abnormal clinical parameters and trace elements. Training set and validation set were divided for the construction of predictable models in males and females: clinical parameters model, trace element model and the combined model (clinical parameters and trace elements). Goodness fit test, decision curve analysis and other related statistical methods were used to perform data analysis.ResultsLower levels of Mg, Ca, Fe in the serum were found in T1D population in females compared with healthy population, while levels of Fe, Zn and Cu of serum in T1D individuals were higher than those of healthy population in males. Levels of serum Mg, Fe and Cu in T1D group were found with significant sex difference for (P < 0.05), and the levels of Fe and Cu in serum of males were higher than those of females, level of serum Mg in males was lower than those of females. Levels of serum Mg and Zn showed fluctuation trend with increased numbers of abnormal clinical parameters (NACP) in males. Serum Zn in females showed consistent elevated trend with NACP; serum Se increased first and then decreased with NACP in males and females. The auxiliary prediction model (Triglyceride, Total protein, serum Mg) was found with the highest predicted efficiency in males (AUC=0.993), while the model in females (Apolipoprotein A, Creatinine, Fe, Se, Zn/Cu ratio) showed the best predicted efficiency (AUC=0.951). The models had passed the verification in validation set, and Chi-square goodness-of-fit test, DCA results both confirmed their satisfactory clinical applicability.ConclusionSex-specific difference were found in serum Mg, Fe and Cu in T1D. The combination of triglyceride, total protein and serum Mg for males, and apolipoprotein A, creatinine, Fe, Se, Zn/Cu ratio for females could effectively predict T1D in patients with negative anti-bodies, which would provide alarm for the population with high-risk of T1D and serve the T1D prediction in patients with negative anti-bodies.  相似文献

The aetiology of Parkinson's disease (PD) is still unknown, but some hypotheses have focused on the imbalances in body levels of metals as co-factors of risk. To assess whether hair could be a reliable marker of possible changes, calcium (Ca), copper (Cu), iron (Fe), magnesium (Mg), silicon (Si) and zinc (Zn) were determined in hair from 81 patients affected by PD and 17 age-matched controls. Care was taken to eliminate external contamination of the hair by thorough washing. Digestion of the matrix was achieved by an acid-assisted microwave procedure. Quantification of the elements was performed by inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry. Results indicated significantly lower levels of Fe in the hair of patients (p=0.018) compared with controls. Ca and Mg levels were slightly lower while Zn levels were higher in patients, although these differences were not significant; neither were variations in Cu and Si. Ca and Mg were at least 1.5 times higher in females than in males in both controls and patients. In addition, Ca correlated positively with Mg in both groups and in both sexes (p-value always less than 0.03), and negatively with age in patients (p<0.01). Finally, element levels did not correlate with either the duration or the severity of the disease or with anti-Parkinson treatment.  相似文献

Using 31p-NMR (the phosphorus nuclear magnetic resonance) spectroscopy, we measured intracellular free Mg levels in the erythrocytes of untreated (n = 7) and diltiazem-treated spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR) (n = 8), and compared them with age-matched Wistar-Kyoto rats (WKY) (n = 10). The intracellular free Mg levels were significantly (p less than 0.01) decreased in untreated SHR compared with those in control WKY. A successful antihypertensive treatment with diltiazem increased the intracellular free Mg levels compared with untreated SHR (p less than 0.05). Furthermore, an inverse correlation was observed between intracellular free Mg levels and blood pressure levels in all groups (r = -0.48, p less than 0.01, n = 25). These observations suggest that abnormalities of intracellular Mg metabolism may be, in part, related to the development or the maintenance of hypertension in SHR.  相似文献

The effect of magnesium (Mg) deficiency on the prevalence of diabetes and diabetic complications has received a great attention. The present study investigated the association of Mg level in the serum or urine of the patients, lived in the Northeast areas of China, with either pre-diabetes or diabetes with and without complications. From January 2010 to October 2011, patients with type 1 diabetes (T1D, n = 25), type 2 diabetes (T2D, n = 137), impaired fasting glucose (IFG, n = 12) or impaired glucose tolerance (IGT, n = 15), and age/gender matched control (n = 50) were enrolled in the First Hospital of Jilin University. In T2D group, there were 24, 34, and 50 patients with nephropathy, retinopathy or peripheral neuropathy. Serum Mg levels in the patients with IGT, IFG, T2D, and T1D were significantly lower than that of control. The urinary Mg levels were significantly increased only in T2D and T1D patients compared to control. There was no difference for these two changes among T2D with and without complications; In addition, there was a significantly positive correlation of serum Mg levels with serum Ca levels only in T2D patients, and also a significantly positive correlation of urinary Mg levels with urinary Ca levels in control, IGT patients, and T2D patients. Simvastatin treatment in T2D patients selectively reduced serum Ca levels and urinary Mg levels. These results suggest that the potential impact of Mg deficiency on metabolic syndrome, diabetes and diabetic complications needs to be received special attention.  相似文献

Increased serum homocysteine (Hcy) can induce liver diseases and can play a remarkable role in hepatic disorders. The purpose of the present study therefore was to investigate the relationship between serum vitamin B(12), folate, zinc and copper, cysteine, and Hcy level differences between cirrhotic patients and healthy subjects. We studied 32 cirrhotic patients (12 females and 20 males) aged 45 +/- 11 years and 32 control subjects (12 females and 20 males) aged 39 +/- 9 years. There was an inverse correlation between Hcy and vitamin B(12) in controls (r = -0.442, p < 0.011) but not in cirrhotic patients (r = -0.147, not significant). Also, mean plasma folate was decreased in cirrhotic patients compared to controls (p < 0.001). Copper increased whereas zinc decreased significantly in cirrhotic patients. A positive correlation was seen between the Cu/Zn ratio and Cu in controls (r = 0.690, p < 0.01), but the correlation between the Cu/Zn ratio and Cu was not significant in the cirrhotic group. Negative correlations were seen between plasma concentration of zinc and the Cu/Zn ratio in controls and cirrhotic patients (r = -0.618, p < 0.01 and r = -0.670, p < 0.01, respectively). Cirrhotic patients displayed multiple abnormalities, including changes in cysteine metabolism and in zinc and copper levels. Although hyperhomocysteinemia is known as an atherogenic and thrombogenic risk factor for cardiovascular disease, it might also be a risk factor for cirrhotic patients. Plasma Hcy, vitamin B(12), and folic acid measurement may be useful in the evaluation of cirrhotic patients.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to assess the effect of sibutramine on mineral status and selected biochemical parameters in obese women. The study was conducted on 24 patients who received 15?mg daily doses of sibutramine for 12?weeks, and on 20 patients who received placebo. At the baseline, after the sixth and twelfth weeks of treatment, body weight and blood pressure were measured, the BMI was calculated, and samples of blood and of first morning urine were collected. Serum lipid profiles, glucose levels, and nitric oxide levels were determined. The iron (Fe), copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), calcium (Ca), and magnesium (Mg) present in the serum and urine samples were assessed. The erythrocyte hemolysate of the patients was use to assay the activity of glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) and superoxide dismutase (SOD). No changes were observed in BMI, blood pressure, or nitric oxide during the study. After 12?weeks of treatment, a decrease was observed in total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, triglyceride, glucose, and ferritin levels. GSH-Px and SOD activity increased after 12?weeks of sibutramine treatment. The Mg and Cu increases was observed in serum after the sixth and twelfth weeks of treatment. It was found that the Zn level decreased in serum after the twelfth week. The elimination of Ca, Mg, Fe, Zn, and Cu in urine also declined in the twelfth week. No differences were found in the women taking the placebo. In conclusion, we found that sibutramine had a positive effect on lipid and glucose status in obese women. However, the drug disturbed the balance of minerals, especially Zn and Mg, in the subjects.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to examine the status of trace elements (Cu, Zn, and Fe) and minerals (Mg, K, Na, and Cl) and the level of biochemical parameters (urea, creatinine, total protein, albumin, and glucose) in hemodialysis (HD) patients. This study included 30 HD patients (25 men and 5 women) aged 52.12 +/- 3.13 years and 30 healthy subjects (23 men and 7 women) aged 51.64 +/- 2.22 years. This study investigated the status of trace elements and minerals in HD patients. It was found that the total HD patients (before and after dialysis) had statistically lower Zn and albumin in the after-dialysis group K and Cl levels and higher Mg, creatinine, and urea in the before-dialysis group K and in the after-dialysis group glucose levels than those of the controls. It was determined that the results might be helpful in monitoring patients with renal failure in terms of insufficiency or excess of trace elements and minerals. There was positive correlation for Mg-K (r = 0.64; p = 0.001), creatinine-urea (r = 0.59; p = 0.001), K-urea (r = 0.56; p = 0.001), K-creatinine (r = 0.52; p = 0.003), Mg-creatinine (r = 0.47; p = 0.008), Zn-albumin (r = 0.40; p = 0.028), and Zn-creatinine (r = 0.40; p = 0.031) in the before-dialysis session. There was also positive correlation for creatinine-urea (r = 0.56; p = 0.001), K-urea (r = 0.39; p = 0.035), and Mg-creatinine (r = 0.38; p = 0.041) in the after-analysis session. As a result of the analysis of regression between serum levels of albumin and zinc in total HD patients, the use of the level of albumin might be a suitable choice in determining zinc deficiency resulting from the decrease in the level of zinc in parallel to that of albumin. The results also suggest that the relationship between creatinine and K, Mg, and Zn could be ascribed to the loss of renal function.  相似文献

ProjectChronic visceral leishmaniasis (VL) is an increasingly common problem in disease endemic states of India. Identification of prognosis risk factor in patients with VL may lead to preventive actions, toward decreasing its mortality in chronic individuals. Though serum Zinc levels are decreased in patients of VL, limited information is available regarding trace elements status in acute and chronic VL patients. The present study was undertaken to compare serum trace elements concentrations in acute and chronic VL patients.ProcedureAcute (mean age = 28.64 years), chronic (mean age = 23.68 years) VL patients and healthy controls (mean age = 23.05 years) who agreed to provide blood specimens for laboratory investigations participated in this study. Serum zinc (Zn), copper (Cu), iron (Fe), magnesium (Mg) and calcium (Ca) were measured spectrophotometrically using chemistry analyzer.ResultsSerum Zn concentration was comparatively much decreased in chronic VL than to acute ones (p = 0.007) while serum Mg was higher in chronic VL than acute (p = 0.002) ones. There was no statistically significant difference between acute and chronic VL in serum concentrations of Cu, Fe and Ca.ConclusionsSerum Zn levels were much decreased and serum Mg were increased in chronic VL as compared to acute cases. The serum concentrations of Fe and Ca did not show any difference between two groups. The serum Cu was increased in both groups but more in chronic ones. Serum Zn and Mg could be a potential prognosis factor for chronic VL patients. We hypothesize zinc supplementation as a chemo preventive agent for chronic VL cases, particularly in endemic areas.  相似文献

The immunoregulatory mechanisms that determine the high serum IgE antibody levels in disorders such as helminth parasite infections and the hyper-IgE recurrent infection syndrome (HIE) remain poorly understood. To assess whether elevated serum IgE levels result from an increased number of B lymphocytes committed to IgE production, the proportion of IgE-producing B lymphocytes was determined by a filter immunoplaque assay using PBMC from persons with a broad range of serum IgE levels that included normal persons (n = 9) and patients with loiasis (n = 12), tropical pulmonary eosinophilia (TPE) (n = 6), lymphatic filariasis (n = 28), and HIE (n = 8). PBMC from these persons were assessed for production of in vitro IgE. The geometric mean number of IgE-secreting cells in 10(5) B lymphocytes in PBMC was 0.42 (range 0-2.2) in normal persons, 5.6 (range 0.1-35.5) among patients with loiasis, 9.4 (range 0-53.2) among patients with lymphatic filariasis, 52 (range 31.5-115) among patients with TPE, and 218 (range 56-1404) among patients with HIE. When all study subjects were grouped, there were significant correlations with serum IgE levels (r2 = 0.78; p less than 0.0001) and net spontaneous in vitro IgE production (r2 = 0.8; p less than 0.0001). Estimates of the amount of IgE production per B lymphocyte were similar among normal persons, patients with filarial infections, and patients with TPE (geometric means of 134, 96, and 141 pg/ml/cell, respectively); in contrast, for HIE patients, IgE production by individual B cells was significantly lower (geometric mean 28 pg/ml/cell; p less than 0.001). These observations demonstrate that clonal expansion of IgE-producing B lymphocytes is a major mechanism underlying the elevated serum IgE levels seen in persons with hyper-IgE states.  相似文献

Since correct assessment of testicular function and androgenic status in humans requires multiple sampling, a sensitive and accurate radioimmunoassay (RIA) of testosterone (T) was established for male and female saliva samples. This easily collected biological fluid, which contains nonprotein-bound T, may represent an attractive alternative or a complement to total plasma T assays. In saliva samples from 5 normal males, a clear circadian rhythm was observed, and morning concentrations (135 +/- 31 pg/ml) were significantly higher (p less than 0.02) than evening samples (85 +/- 23 pg/ml). In 11 normal females, morning saliva levels were 12.8 +/- 1.8 pg/ml. The levels of T in male saliva, in response to both exogenous T administration (100 mg i.m.) and HCG stimulation (2 X 2,000 IU i.m.), accurately reflected the changes observed in plasma T, and the magnitude of increase in T levels was clearly greater in saliva than in plasma samples during the intramuscular administration of the long-acting T preparation. In males, significant correlations were observed between salivary and plasma T concentrations in morning samples (r = 0.61, p less than 0.01), following HCG stimulation (r = 0.89, p less than 0.05) and during T administration (r = 0.87, p less than 0.05). In women, the correlation at 8 a.m. was also significant (r = 0.82, p less than 0.05).  相似文献

Serum levels of calcium (Ca), inorganic phosphorus (P), magnesium (Mg), parathyroid (PTH) and calcitonin (CT) hormones of fat-tail Awassi ewes were determined during the last month of pregnancy. The incidence of hypocalcaemia (HCE) was 13.4% of the obstetrical cases examined. Twenty-six (81.3%) of 32 ewes with HCE were 4 yr of age or older. Significant decreases (p less than 0.01) in serum Ca levels from normal values or controls (n = 6; 10.04 +/- 0.22% (w/w)) to pathological values (4.30 +/- 0.35% (w/w)) caused severe clinical manifestations in 75% of affected ewes. This HCE was accompanied by a significant increase in the PTH level (142.6 +/- 9.1 pmol/l in comparison to 99.7 +/- 9.3 pmol/l in controls, p less than 0.05) and significant decrease in serum CT level (98.2 +/- 7.6 pg/ml in comparison to 144.6 +/- 25.7 pg/ml in controls; p less than 0.05). Intravenous administration of Ca borogluconate yielded normal Ca levels which were accompanied by a decrease in serum PTH levels and an increase in CT levels to normal values.  相似文献

To test the effect of monensin on the mineral balance of growing cattle under different environmental temperatures, 24 male steers were assigned in a 2 × 2 factorial arrangement, contrasting 0 and 85 mg monensin/animal per day at 24.3 and 33.2 °C (environmental temperatures). Monensin effect was directly modulated by the environmental temperature: it increased apparent retentions of P (P=0.066), Na (P=0.005) and K (P=0.003), at the higher temperature and decreased these apparent retentions at the lower temperature, as compared with non-supplemented animals. Monensin increased fecal Ca (P=0.037), and urinary P (P=0.002), Na (P=0.003), K (P=0.014), Mg (P=0.051) and Zn (P=0.091), with higher concentrations of these minerals in animals held at 24.3 °C and lower concentrations in those at 33.2 °C, as compared with non-supplemented animals. Monensin decreased serum Mg (P=0.001) and increased serum Zn (P=0.071) in animals at 33.2 °C and increased serum Mg and decreased serum Zn at 24.3 °C. Irrespective of temperature, monensin increased both apparent absorption (P=0.058) and apparent retention (P=0.093) of P, and also urine Cu (P=0.085). Environmental temperature modulated monensin effects on mineral balance. Monensin increased apparent retention of several minerals in animals under heat stress.  相似文献

The effects of simultaneous changes of calcium, magnesium, iron, copper, and zinc concentrations were evaluated in normal human T and B lymphocytes, cultured in cation-depleted media. Optimal concentrations for thymidine incorporation (TI) in both cell populations were Fe and Zn 15 μM and Cu 5 μM; for t cells Ca 2 mM and Mg 4 mM; for B cells Ca 4 mM and Mg 6 mM. TI decreased with increasing molarity of cations and the decrease was particularly apparent with Cu. Minimal amounts of Ca and Mg (0.5 mM) were necessary for growth, even in presence of optimal concentrations of Fe, Cu, and Zn. Fe and Cu showed synergistic stimulatory effects at low concentrations and synergistic inhibitory effects at high concentrations. Antagonism between Fe and Zn, Cu and Zn, and Ca and Zn was also demonstrated. CD4/CD8 increased with PHA stimulation in presence of Zn, and decreased with ConA stimulation in presence of Zn or Fe. The results demonstrate: (1) the relationship and interdependence of Fe, Cu, and Zn concentrations in modulating the growth of normal lymphocytes; (2) the stimulatory effects of Fe on B cells and Zn on CD8 positive cells; (3) the inhibitory effect of Cu at concentrations lower than those of Fe and Zn; (4) the requirement of Ca and Mg in certain concentration and ratio for the action of the other cations; and (5) the Ca and Mg requirement for the growth of B cells higher than T cells.  相似文献

Beta-receptor agonist (terbutalin or isoxsuprin) administration to pregnant women either because of premature labor (therapy group; T; n = 8) or as prophylactic treatment (prophylaxis group; p; n = 8) resulted in a marked drop in serum potassium (p less than 0.001) during the first two hours of infusion in all patients. In five diabetic women in the P group the prolactin was significantly decreased (P less than 0.01) as was serum aldosterone levels (p less than 0.01). These changes were not observed in the T group. The two groups of pregnant women responded with a significant increase in free fatty acids (FFA) and glucose but the magnitude and the time coarse differed. Thus in T women, FFA reached a peak after 30-60 minutes into treatment and then returned to baseline levels. A closer analysis revealed that this pattern was only obtained in patients receiving terbutalin. Among women given prophylactic treatment with terbutalin, a continuous increase in FFA was noted over the initial two hours (p less than 0.001). The increase in serum glucose was continuous in the two patient groups (p less than 0.001). It is suggested that beta-receptor agonists in diabetic women induces a dopaminergic type of response since serum prolactin levels but not TSH concentrations were affected. The possibility that an increased PGE2 synthesis at the expense of PGF2 alpha might mediate this effect of beta-receptor agonists in discussed. It is also suggested that an increased prostaglandin synthesis might interfere with aldosterone secretion. The possibility that falling serum potassium levels may activate dopaminergic systems via PGE2 synthesis is also emphasized.  相似文献

To evaluate the effects of thyroid hormones on the concentration of epidermal growth factor (EGF), we determined values for the immunoreactive EGF concentration in the urine (U-irEGF) of newborn infants with congenital hypothyroidism (N = 19), and in urine, saliva and serum of adult patients with hypothyroidism (N = 11) and hyperthyroidism (N = 8). The values were expressed as SD score (SDS), i.e. deviation in SD units from their mean value of healthy subjects of the same age and sex. The SDS of relative U-irEGF (ng/mg creatinine) was lower (P less than 0.01) in newborn infants with congenital hypothyroidism (-0.8 +/- 0.2; mean +/- SEM) than in healthy infants. Their relative U-irEGF correlated with their serum T4 concentrations (r = 0.59, P less than 0.01). The SDS of relative U-irEGF was lower (P less than 0.01) in adult hypothyroid patients (-1.2 +/- 0.5) and higher (P greater than 0.05) in adult hypothyroid patients (0.9 +/- 0.6) than in healthy adult subjects. When subsequently euthyroid, their SDS of relative U-irEGF increased to -0.5 +/- 0.3 (P less than 0.01), and decreased to -0.7 +/- 1.1 (P less than 0.05), respectively. The irEGF concentrations in saliva and serum were not significantly different between the hypothyroid and hyperthyroid patients. Our results indicate that urinary excretion of irEGF in man is dependent on thyroid hormone.  相似文献

1. The role of exogenous parathyroid hormone (PTH) and stimulation or inhibition of endogenous hormone release, on the parotid gland of normal and thyroparathyroidectomized (t.x.p.t.x.) goats was studied. 2. The intravenous infusion of PTH and EDTA produced a transitory rise in saliva flow rate in intact animals. In t.x.p.t.x. goats the flow of saliva decreased transiently throughout the infusion. 3. The calcium levels in parotid saliva was unchanged throughout the infusion of PTH, EDTA, calcium gluconate both alone or with propranolol, in either intact or t.x.p.t.x. animals. 4. The parathyroid hormone infusion caused an increase in salivary phosphate concentration in both intact and operated goats. The effects of PTH upon the salivary flow and concentration of P are discussed.  相似文献

Exogenously administered PGE1 or PGE2, like atropine, markedly decreased both the flow and calcium concentration of parasympathetically evoked rat parotid saliva; PGF2 alpha was less effective. Despite the fact that prostaglandins greatly reduced the Ca concentration of nerve-evoked saliva, they did not change the glandular Ca concentration of either control or parasympathetically stimulated parotid glands. Prostaglandins (20 micrograms/kg, i.a.) decreased the Na or K concentration of nerve-evoked parotid saliva, but at lower doses had no significant effect. PGE1, PGE2, PGF2 alpha or atropine markedly decreased flow rates of similarly evoked rat submandibular saliva. Prostaglandins and atropine, however, decreased the Na concentration and increased the K concentration of parasympathetically evoked submandibular saliva. PGF2 alpha, like atropine, increased the Ca concentration of such saliva. Drug vehicle, ethanol, slightly decreased the flow of both parotid and submandibular saliva but not the ion secretion, Endogenous prostaglandins themselves may not play a role in secretory activities during parasympathetic nerve stimulation of rat salivary glands, since administration of indomethacin, and inhibitor of prostaglandin biosynthesis, prior to or during nerve stimulation did not significantly alter nerve-evoked salivary secretion, The mechanisms by which prostaglandins modulate secretory responses of salivary glands during parasympathetic stimulation are not understood.  相似文献
