Floral sex ratios and gynomonoecy in Solidago (Asteraceae)
Gynomonoecy is the sexual system in which individual plants bear both female and bisexual flowers. Little attention has been paid to the adaptive significance of this sexual system, which is particularly prevalent in the Asteraceae. We investigated one hypothesized advantage of having two flower types, namely that this arrangement permits flexibility in allocation of resources to male and female reproductive functions. We examined six species of goldenrod ( Solidago ), a genus of gynomonoecious, perennial herbs. In greenhouse experiments, we varied one or more of three environmental variables – light, nutrients and water – and/or examined heads in different positions on the plants. Most variables had little or no effect on the proportion of ray flowers. Significant effects were found for light in 0 of 5 experiments, for nutrients in 4 of 9 experiments and for water in 0 of 3 experiments. Heads in different positions in the inflorescence differed in the proportion of ray flowers in half of the experiments, though the differences were small. We also monitored temporal patterns in four species and found that the proportion of ray flowers increased significantly over the blooming period and the number of flowers per head declined. Because of the small number of significant effects and their modest magnitude, we conclude that the presence of two flower types in goldenrods is probably not advantageous in allowing flexibility in sex expression. It seems likely that this sexual system has been more important either in increasing pollinator attraction or in reducing pollen–pistil interference. The small observed changes in floral ratios were generally accompanied by changes in disc size in a manner consistent with an explanation based on allometry.  © 2002 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2002, 77 , 413–422.

Gynodioecious populations (i.e. populations with female and hermaphrodite individuals) often contain a third phenotype with an intermediate sex expression. In Silene italica , this phenotype is characterized by a mixture of pistillate and perfect flowers and is thus gynomonoecious. To characterize sexual functions of these gynomonoecious individuals and their potential influence in the maintenance of gynodioecy, reproductive characters of the three sexual phenotypes were compared over 2 years in several families of S. italica produced by crossing. We found that gynomonoecious individuals were intermediate for flower production and female fertility characters, although they did not always significantly differ from female individuals. Perfect flowers of gynomonoecious and hermaphrodite plants were similar in size and pollen production. Gynomonoecious individuals were thus intermediate in female and in male functions. Family effects were found for most of the characters. The female advantage (i.e. the fertility of females compared to the female fertility of pollen producing plants) was not dramatically different when gynomonoecious plants were taken into account.  © 2006 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2006, 87 , 583–591.

Some gynodioecious species have intermediate individuals that bear both female and hermaphroditic flowers. This phenomenon is known as a gynodioecious–gynomonoecious sexual system. Gender expression in such species has received little attention in the past, and the phenologies of male and female functions have also yet to be explored. In this study, we examined variations in gender patterns, their effects on female reproductive success and sex expression in depth throughout the flowering period in two populations. The studied populations of Silene littorea contained mostly gynomonoecious plants and the number of pure females was very low. The gynomonoecious plants showed high variability in the total proportion of female flowers. In addition, the proportion of female flowers in each plant varied widely across the flowering season. Although there was a trend towards maleness, our measures of functional gender suggested that most plants transmit their genes via both pollen and ovules. Fruit set and seed set were not significantly different among populations; in contrast, flower production significantly varied between the two populations – and among plants – with consequent variation in total seed production. Conversely, gender and sex expression were similar in both populations. Plants with higher phenotypic femaleness did not have higher fruit set, seed set or total female fecundity. The mating environment fluctuated little across the flowering period, but fluctuations were higher in the population with low flower production. We therefore conclude that the high proportion of gynomonoecious individuals in our studied populations of S. littorea may be advantageous for the species, providing the benefits of both hermaphroditic and female flowers.

The relative allocation of resources to male and female functions may vary among flowers within and among individual plants for many reasons. Several theoretical models of sex allocation in plants predict a positive correlation between the resource status of a flower or individual and the proportion of reproductive resources allocated to female function. These models assume that, independent of resource status, a negative correlation exists between male and female investment. Focusing on the allocation of resources within flowers, we tested these theoretical predictions and this assumption using the annual Clarkia unguiculata (Onagraceae). We also sought preliminary evidence for a genetic component to these relationships. From 116 greenhouse-cultivated plants representing 30 field-collected maternal families, multiple flowers and fruits per plant were sampled for gamete production, pollen?:?ovule ratio, seed number, ovule abortion, seed biomass/fruit, mean individual seed mass, and petal area. If sex allocation changes as predicted, then (1) assuming that flowers produced early have access to more resources than those produced later, basal flowers should exhibit a higher absolute and proportional investment in female function than distal flowers and (2) plants of high resource status (large plants) should produce flowers with a higher proportional investment in female function than those of low resource status. Within plants, variation in floral traits conformed to the first prediction. Among plants and families, no significant effects of plant size (dry stem biomass) on intrafloral proportional sex allocation were observed. We detected no evidence for a negative genetic correlation between male and female investment per flower, even when controlling for plant size.

From an ancestor with bisexual flowers, plants with unisexual flowers, or even unisexual individuals have evolved in different lineages of angiosperms. The Asteraceae tribe Inuleae includes hermaphroditic, monoecious, dioecious, and gynomonoecious species. Gynomonoecy, the sexual system in which female and bisexual flowers occur on the same plant, is prevalent in the Asteraceae. We inferred one large gene phylogeny (ndhF) and two supertrees to investigate whether gynomonoecy was a stage in the evolution from hermaphroditism to monoecy. We identified transitions in sexual system evolution using the stochastic character mapping method. From gynomonoecious ancestors, both hermaphroditic and monoecious descendants have evolved. Gynomonoecy was not restricted to a stage in the evolution toward monoecy because the number of transitions and the rate of change from monoecy to gynomonoecy were much higher than the opposite. We also investigated one hypothesized association among female flowers and the development of a petaloid ray as an explanation of gynomonoecy maintenance in Asteraceae. We found that peripheral female flowers and petaloid rays were phylogenetically correlated. However, empirical evidence shows that a causal relationship between these traits is not clear.

To test the prediction of sex allocation theory that plants or flowers high in resource status emphasize the female function, we explored the variation in both biomass (the number of pollen grains and ovules) and temporal (male and female durations) sex allocation among and within plants of protandrous Lobelia sessilifolia in relation to plant size and flower position within plants. Among plants, the mean number of pollen grains and ovules per flower of a plant increased with plant size, whereas the mean P/O ratio (number of pollen grains/number of ovules ratio) decreased with plant size. The mean male duration, the mean female duration, and the mean ratio of male duration/flower longevity per flower of a plant were not correlated with plant size. Thus, large plants emphasized female function in terms of biomass sex allocation, which is consistent with the prediction of size-dependent sex allocation theory. The results for temporal sex allocation, however were inconsistent with the theory. Within plants, the mean number of pollen grains and ovules per flower at each position decreased from lower to upper flowers (early to late blooming flowers) and that of the P/O ratio increased from lower to upper flowers. The mean male duration and the mean female duration per flower decreased from lower to upper flowers, whereas the mean ratio of male duration/flower longevity increased from lower to upper flowers. The population sex ratio changed from male-biased to female-biased. Thus, later blooming flowers emphasized the male function in terms of both biomass and temporal sex allocation, consistent with the sex allocation theory, regarding the change in the population sex ratio.

Resource allocation trade-offs between sexual functions are predicted, but these are usually measured only at the whole plant level. In some gynodioecious species, individuals with partially restored male fertility exist providing an opportunity to investigate whether the costs associated with male fertility restoration are linked to seed production. In this study, we examined whether there is a relationship between the numbers of stamens and seeds produced both at the flower level and at the plant level in the gynodioecious herb Geranium sylvaticum. We individually marked flowers in plants varying in the degree of male sterility in the field and counted the number of seeds produced. There was no significant correlation between the numbers of stamens and seeds produced at the flower level suggesting an absence of resource trade-off between female and male functions. Furthermore, the numbers of stamens and seeds were positively correlated at the plant level. The lack of trade-offs between the two sexual functions in this species indicates that relative sex allocation was not affected by resources within a single season and/or that the male costs were relatively small.

Commelina benghalensis L. exhibits variability in both foliar and floral features; every plant bears three types of branches and four types of flowers. The branches are negatively geotropic, positively geotropic and diageotropic. The flowers are uni- or bisexual, chasmogamous and cleistogamous. This variability influences the breeding system as well as resource allocation to male and female functions. The plants allocate c. 15% of their total resources to reproduction, the major part of which (68.9%) is devoted to production of aerial branches. The proportion of reproductive effort (RE) allocated to various branch systems is correlated with the availability of resources at the time of their differentiation. The pollen/ovule (P/O) ratio, female : male biomass ratio and reproductive output vary between different flower and branch types; variation is more pronounced in the latter. These variations notwithstanding, the results are in line with Charnov's sex allocation theory. The cleistogamous flowers of aerial branches are, however, an exception, being male- rather than female-biased. The reason behind the deviation is, in all probability, their recent evolution from chasmogamous flowers.  © 2002 The Linnean Society of London, Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society , 2002, 140 , 403−413.

Relative allocation of resources to growth vs. reproduction has long been known to be an important determinant of reproductive success. The importance of variation in allocation to different structures within reproductive allocation is somewhat less clear. This study was designed to elucidate the importance of allocation to vegetative vs. reproductive functions, and allocation within reproductive functions (sex allocation), to realized female success in an andromonoecious plant, Solanum carolinense. Allocation measurements were taken on plants in experimental arrays exposed to natural pollination conditions. These measurements included total flower number, the proportion of flowers that were male, flower size, and vegetative size. Flower number explained the majority of the variation among individuals in their success-that is, there was strong selection for increased flower production. There was also selection to decrease the proportion of flowers that were male, but neither flower size nor vegetative size (a measure of overall resource availability) were direct determinants of female success. After Bonferroni corrections for multiple comparisons, most phenotypic correlations among the traits measured were nonsignificant. Thus, in this andromonoecious species there is not a strong relationship between resource availability (vegetative size) and female success, and female success is instead determined by the relative production of the two different flower types.

Aims Sex allocation in plants is often plastic, enabling individuals to adjust to variable environments. However, the predicted male-biased sex allocation in response to low resource conditions has rarely been experimentally tested in hermaphroditic plants. In particular, it is unknown whether distal flowers in linear inflorescences show a larger shift to male allocation relative to basal flowers when resources are reduced. In this study, we measure position-dependent plasticity of floral sex allocation within racemes of Aconitum gymnandrum in response to reduced resource availability. Methods Using a defoliation treatment in the field applied to potted plants from a nested half-sibling design, we examined the effects of the treatment, flower position, family and their interactions.Important findings Allocation to male function increased with more distal flower position, while female allocation either did not change with position or declined at the most distal flowers. Defoliation significantly reduced the mass of both the androecium and gynoecium, but not anther number or carpel number. Gynoecial mass declined more strongly with defoliation than did androecial mass, resulting in a significant increase in the androecium/gynoecium ratio as predicted by sex allocation theory. Plastic responses of androecium mass and gynoecium mass were affected by flower position, with less mass lost in basal flowers, but similar plastic magnitude in both sexual traits across flower position lead to consistent variation in the androecium/gynoecium ratio along the inflorescence. A significant treatment*paternal family interaction for the androecium/gynoecium ratio is evidence for additive genetic variation for plastic floral sex allocation, which means that further evolution of allocation can occur.

Variation in floral sex allocation in Polygonatum odoratum (Liliaceae)
BACKGROUND AND AIMS: It is well known that resource allocation to male and female functions can be highly variable in hermaphroditic plants. The purpose of this study was to investigate variations in sexual investment at different levels (flower, plant and population) in Polygonatum odoratum, a plant with sequentially opening flowers. METHODS: Pollen and ovule production in base, middle and top flowers of P. odoratum flowering shoots from two natural populations were quantified. Plant measurements of phenotypic and functional gender were calculated in both populations. Total leaf number was used to investigate the relationship between gender assessments and plant size. KEY RESULTS: Pollen and ovule production varied depending on flower position, although the precise pattern differed between both studied populations; only investment in female floral function decreased markedly from base to top flowers in both populations. The frequency distribution of phenotypic gender and their relationship with plant size differed between populations. Phenotypic and functional gender were correlated in both populations. CONCLUSIONS: Sexual investment in P. odoratum has shown a marked variability within plants, among plants, and between populations, which confirms the importance of analysing sex expression in plants of this type. Differences in relative investment in male and female components (phenotypic gender) are reflected in the functional gender and it would be expected that the evolution of sexual specialization in Polygonatum odoratum would be promoted.

The genus Eurya is described as strictly dioecious, but rare leaky plants have been found in some species, causing much confusion about the sex expression of the genus. Through field investigations from 2009 to 2011, morphologically hermaphroditic flowers in Eurya obtusifolia were discovered. In order to understand the sex expression of these plants, their stamens, pistils and ovules were carefully observed. Staining methods were used to assess the functional gender. The flowers of the leaky plants can be classified into six types: pistillate, staminate, cryptic pistillate, cryptic staminate, hermaphrodite and infertile. Leaky plants usually exhibit a combination of different kinds of flowers, making them either gynoecious, androecious, gynomonoecious or monoecious. Some individuals have infertile flowers. Bagging experiments verified the bisexual function of E. obtusifolia plants, some of which possess the ability to self‐pollinate. The flower morphology of leaky plants varied more than that of dioecious ones, and the number of ovules were significantly negatively correlated with the number of stamens. These plants show lower fitness than normal dioecious plants. This may owe to allocation tradeoffs or sexual genome conflicts. As leaky dioecy is rarely reported in this genus, E. obtusifolia is an important species to study in order to better understand the ecological adaptations and evolutionary pathways that lead to dioecy in Eurya. Our findings provide some evidence that dioecy of Eurya evolved from hermaphroditism, but further studies are still needed.

In long-lived plants, sexual expression can be highly variable in time and space. The extent to which sexual dimorphism of flowers is expressed in the same or in separate individuals, may have implications for the plants’ dependence on pollen vectors, the compatibility of the pollen received, and the potential for setting fruit. Here, we account for variability in sexual expression in the small tree Acacia caven, which produces hermaphrodite and male flowers on the same or in separate individuals. We focus on whether individual sexual expression influences fruit set, which latter has been reported to be extremely low in this species. Individual sexual expression, estimated as the hermaphrodite: male flowers ratio was variable both within and among plants across two reproductive seasons. Though male flower production could be very high (up to 99% of the flowers), all trees produced both flower types within the same individual, thus confirming andromonoecy in this species. More interestingly, hermaphrodite: male flowers ratio had a negative effect on fruit set. This pattern was consistent across two reproductive seasons and suggests that maleness should favor female function. Similar trends found in other plant species with the same sexual system support the hypothesis that male flowers of andromonoecious species may contribute to reduce self-pollen interference compared with hermaphrodite flowers. By favoring the deposition of compatible pollen grains and increasing fruit set, maleness would then help to maintain andromonoecy in this and other andromonoecious species.

This paper reports the bisexual structure of the flowers of Pterocarya stenoptera. The bisexual flowers are borne at the end of a leafy shoot of the current year in many-flowered terminal pendulous catkins. They have the same structure as the general female ones. Each flower grows in the axil of a bract, with a pair of bracteoles and four small perianths. Each flower has two or three carpels in the centre of the flower, and upon them there are two or three styles with stigmas on the inner face. They differ from the general female ones in that each of them contains 4-6 stamens, forming a single whorl. The stamens alternates with, or is opposite to, the perianth elements. Sometimes they contain 8 (-10) stamens, forming two whorls, with 6 in the outer whorl and 2 (-4) in the inner whorl, and in this case the pistil in the bisexual flower of terminal catkins often becomes a rudiment. It is interesting that we have also found bisexual flowers in another tree, which are borne in lateral male catkins. They have the same structure as general male ones, and the pistils are often represented by a rudiment. Manning (1940) points out that some female flowers of Pterocarya stenoptera and P. fraxinifolia occasionally have stamens ( ? ) opposite the sepals. In P. stenoptera we have found that both the stamens and the stigmas of bisexual flowers are functional. They are capable of producing functional fruits. This is the same case as in Myrica Gale described by Davey and Gibson (1917). Rendle (1952) points out that in the male flowers of Platycarya the pistils often appeared as a rudiment. He considers, however, the male flowers derived from the bisexual flowers with an indefinite number of stamens. The rudimentary pistils of lateral male catkins in P. stenoptera we found are just the same as the ones found in Platycarya by Rendle. The discovery of the bisexual flowers in P. stenoptera may prove that the unisexual flowers of the present-day Juglandaceae are derived from ancestors with bisexual flowers. This tends to support the hypothesis that Cycadicae is the possible ancestor of the angiosperms.
