Color mutations occur frequently among rodents. Here we describe a blond coat color mutation in the meadow vole (Microtus pennsylvanicus) that arose in a captive breeding colony established from wild-caught animals from southern Illinois. The blond coat coloration results from changes in the color and distribution of pigments in the hair. The mutation is monogenic autosomal recessive.  相似文献

The Chinese scrub vole (Neodon irene) belongs to the subfamily Arvicolinae, which is restricted to mountain areas at high altitudes (2800-4000). In this study, we sequenced the complete mitochondrial genome of N. irene. It was determined to be 16,367 bases. The nucleotide sequence data of 12 heavy-strand protein-coding genes of N. irene and other 22 rodents were used for phylogenetic analysis. Bayesian inference (BI) and maximum likelihood (ML) were used. Both the BI and ML trees demonstrated that Microtus rossiaemeridionalis and Microtus kikuchii did not cluster together with each other. On the contrary, M. rossiaemeridionalis showed close relationship with N. irene. In the present study, only one sequence from Neodon and two sequences from Microtus were included in the phylogenetic analysis which should contribute to the unusual relationship. Therefore, in order to better understand the phylogenetic relationship within Rodentia, more rodents' complete mitochondrial genomes are required.  相似文献

The Chinese oriental vole (Eothenomys chinensis) belongs to subfamily Arvicolinae, which is endemic to the mountains in southwest China. E. chinensis and other Arvicoline species display a number of features that make them ideal for evolutionary studies of speciation and the role of Quaternary glacial cycles on diversification. In this study, the complete mitochondrial genome of E. chinensis was sequenced. It was determined to be 16,362 bases. The nucleotide sequence data of 12 heavy-strand protein-coding genes of E. chinensis and other 19 rodents were used for phylogenetic analyses. Trees constructed using three different phylogenetic methods (Bayesian, maximum parsimony, and maximum likelihood) showed a similar topology demonstrating that E. chinensis was clustered in subfamily arvicolinae--formed a solid monophyletic group being sister to the subfamily Cricetinae. And the trees also suggested that E. chinensis is a sister to the genus Microtus and Proedromys.  相似文献

Animals that feed on forest tree seeds, such as Apodemus mice, increase in number after a mast year. At high latitudes, there is a similar delayed response by Myodes voles to high seed crops of bilberry (Vaccinium myrtillus), but here the mechanism is hypothesised to be increased forage quality, caused by a trade-off between reproduction and defence in the plants. Both Apodemus mice and Myodes voles eat berries, but only the latter feed on bilberry plants. Hence, only Myodes voles are predicted to respond to bilberry peak years. A second prediction is that the effect should last longer than any possible direct impacts of bilberries, because the plants would not be able to rebuild their defence until the succeeding summer. During a 21-year snap-trapping study of small rodents in Southern Norway, the spring population of bank vole (Myodes glareolus) was positively related to a bilberry seed index of the previous year, indicating increased winter survival, whereas the wood mouse (Apodemus sylvaticus) was not affected. Also the succeeding autumn population index of the bank vole was positively related to the bilberry index of the previous year, even when controlling for spring population levels. The wood mouse population responded to mast years of sessile oak (Quercus petraea), whereas seeds of Norway spruce (Picea abies) seemed to have some impact on both species. It is concluded that these rodents are mainly limited from below, but by different mechanisms for the granivorous and the herbivorous species.  相似文献

Digestive performance, gut morphology and rate of digesta passage were measured in Brandt's voles (Microtus brandti) offered pelleted diets of low (25% neutral-detergent fibre) and high (38%) fibre content. Digestion coefficients of dry matter, crude fat, crude protein, energy and fibre were all significantly lower on the higher fibre diet. Although not significantly higher, dry matter intakes were more than maintained when extra cellulose was included in the diet, so that intakes of digestible energy were only 22% lower on the higher fibre diet. Total length and total gut tissue weight increased significantly, and the length and tissue weight of the caecum, proximal colon, and distal colon were significantly greater on the higher fibre diet as well. Total tract mean retention time (MRT) of a solute marker (Co-EDTA) was significantly greater than that of a particle marker (Cr-cell walls) on the lower fibre diet, and in the same direction on the higher fibre diet. The ratio of solute to particle MRTs (the solute/particle differential retention ratio) was 1.45 on the lower fibre diet and 1.19 on the higher fibre diet. There were no significant differences in marker MRTs between diets. Examination of marker concentrations in the stomach, small intestine, caecum and colon of voles killed at 0.5-h intervals after a pulse dose of Co-EDTA indicated that the marker was recycled to the stomach by coprophagy. Thus, as in other microtine rodents, an increase in gut capacity, selective digesta retention and recycling of digesta via coprophagy enables Brandt's voles to utilise diets of higher fibre content than may be expected for such a small (45 g) mammalian herbivore.  相似文献

放牧活动对小型啮齿动物种群数量的影响是草原生态系统研究中的热点问题,确定绵羊和小型啮齿动物的营养生态位关系对于草原生态系统的管理具有重要的作用。运用粪便显微分析法分析了内蒙古草原动物生态研究站大型野外围栏内布氏田鼠和绵羊在6—9月份的食谱组成,确定两种草食动物食性选择和营养生态位的变化,从食物利用途径揭示放牧活动对布氏田鼠种群数量的影响方式及二者之间的竞争与共存关系。研究结果表明:围栏中共有23种植物,其中糙隐子草、克氏针茅、羊草和刺藜是围栏中的优势植物;布氏田鼠共取食10种植物,绵羊共取食8种植物,禾本植物为两种动物的主要采食植物。布氏田鼠和绵羊的喜食植物种类都存在季节性变化;除7月外,两种动物的食物多样性与围栏植物多样性有显著的正相关关系,表明动物的食性选择受植物资源变化的影响。布氏田鼠和绵羊具有很高的营养生态位重叠度,除8月(0.691)外,6、7、9月份的营养生态位重叠度均高于0.9,表明二者之间存在激烈的食物竞争;放牧活动极显著地降低了禾本科植物的地上生物量,导致布氏田鼠的食物数量减少;放牧处理下布氏田鼠的喜食植物的物种数和营养生态位宽度(除9月)增加,导致布氏田鼠的食物质量...  相似文献

Seasonal changes of thermoregulation were studied in mole voles (Ellobius talpinus Pall.) from southern Siberia. Spontaneous fluctuations of body temperature were significantly higher in summer than in autumn. Standard deviations from average daily temperature of individuals were 0.95 (N=212) in summer and 0.57 (N=248) in autumn. Thermoregulatory response to cold exposure and to norepinephrine injection varied in different seasons of the year. In cold seasons, mole voles are able to maintain temperature homeostasis in a wide range of environmental conditions. This ability declined only in summer. Hence, the mole vole's adaptation to the continental climate is based on distinct seasonal variations of thermoregulation. In summer, thermoregulatory mechanisms are similar to those of desert eusocial fossorial species, but in spring and autumn, mole voles share the thermoregulatory strategies of boreal terrestrial rodents.  相似文献

A direct approach to identify the cellular source of P450 aromatase in the bank vole testes (seasonally breeding rodents) is the use of immunohistochemistry with a specific antibody that recognizes this enzyme. To confirm the presence of functional aromatase, its activity was measured in microsomal preparations of whole testes and of seminiferous tubules by means of biochemical assay with tritiated androstenedione. The assay was validated using increasing concentrations of both microsomal preparations. Immunoreactive aromatase was found in Leydig cells, Sertoli cells, and germ cells, especially in spermatocytes and spermatids. The aromatase activity was present in microsomal fractions of whole testis and seminiferous tubules. The immunolocalization of P450 aromatase and aromatase activity have been found as photoperiod-dependent.  相似文献

In this work we have analyzed results of the long-term investigations of the helminthes distribution in the various demography groups of the water vole population (Arvicola terrestris L.) in North Baraba (Novosibirsk region). The data on the dominant parasites of these rodents: trematodes Notocotylus noyeri (Joyeux, 1922), cestodes Limnolepis transfuga Spassky et Merkuscheva, 1967, nematodes Capillaria wioletti Ruchljadeva, 1950, Longistriata minuta (Dujarden, 1845) and Heligmosomum costellatum (Dujarden, 1845) have shown that the number of parasites in biocenosis are connected with different factors, such as the demographic structure of the host population, the alternation of hosts number and conditions of the environment (dry and damp phases of the climatic cycle). In the dry phase the main parasitize load N. noyeri, L. transfuga and C. wioletti connects with the breeding group; in the damp period - with immature rodents. Independently of the phase climatic cycle and the density of the water vole population the great bulk of nematodes L. minuta and H. costellatum was uncovered of the immature individuals. In any case the number of helminthes changed synchronously with such of the its host.  相似文献

A new geographical gradient in the dynamics of small rodents is demonstrated by analysing 29 time series of density indices of the common vole (Microtus arvalis) from Poland, the Czech Republic and the Slovak Republic. This gradient extends from more stable northerly populations in coastal Poland to more variable and cyclic populations in the southernmost parts of the Slovak Republic, and is hence a reversal of the Fennoscandian gradient. All studied variables (such as mean density, cycle amplitude, density variability and the coefficients in a second-order autoregressive model) exhibit consistent latitudinal variation. Possible underlying factors are discussed. In particular, we suggest that seasonality may be a key element in explaining the observed new gradient.  相似文献

After intraperitoneal inoculation ofE. crescens to nine species of wild small mammals, six species of rodents (Apodemus flavicollis, A. sylvaticus, Clethrionomys glareolus, Microtus agrestis, M. arvalis, Mus musculus) developed generalized adiaspiromycosis. The course of experimental infection corresponded to the infections of laboratory animals provoked in the same manner of inoculation. The authors studied the affliction of individual organs, the dynamics of growth of adiaspores in the organs of the abdominal cavity and in the lungs and followed up morphological changes in the adiaspores. In fresh cover glass preparations, the presence of manifestations was demonstrated justifying considerations on the capacity of multiplication of the adiaspiromycosis agent in the host organism.  相似文献

A new dicrocoeliid trematode, Brachylecithum glareoli n. sp., is described from the biliary ducts of the bank vole, Clethrionomys glareolus, in southwest Poland. This is the first dicrocoeliid species described in rodents from Poland. It is characterized mainly by the maximum body width at the level of the vitellaria; large, longitudinally oval testes; round, or transversely oval, ovary that is smaller than the testes; vitellaria located in the midbody; cirrus sac dorsally overlapping ventral sucker, but never reaching beyond half of its length; and large, distinctly elongated eggs.  相似文献

Summary This study examines the hypothesis that mammalian species with wide fluctuations in population size will have greater metabolic rates than species with smaller population fluctuations. We tested this hypothesis using two microtine rodents — the beach vole (Microtus breweri) and the meadow vole (M. pennsylvanicus). Although these species experience similar climatic regimes, eat similar foods, and have a very close phylogenetic relationship, they show marked differences in demography. Microtus pennsylvanicus is prone to large supraannual fluctuations in population size, while M. breweri is essentially acyclical. Metabolic rate (oxygen consumption) of each species was measured using open-flow respirometry at ambient temperatures ranging from 2 to 34° C. Basal metabolic rate of M. pennsylvanicus (1.81 ml O2 g–1 h–1) was significantly greater than that of M. breweri (1.39 ml O2 g–1 h–1). The lower critical temperature, estimated by continuous two-phase regression, was 28.9° C for M. pennsylvanicus and 29.8° C for M. breweri. Regression lines below thermoneutrality did not differ in slope, but the elevation for M. pennsylvanicus was significantly higher. Thus, M. pennsylvanicus has a higher metabolic rate at all temperatures examined. These results support the hypothesis that metabolic rate is positively correlated with the extent of population fluctuation. We suggest that further evidence for, or against, this hypothesis should be found by comparing closely matched species pairs, rather than resorting to confounded allometric comparisons of ecologically and phylogenetically diverse taxa.  相似文献

The parameters of the lipid peroxidation regulatory system (the antioxidative and antiperoxidant activities, the peroxide content, the lipid peroxidation intensity) in the tissues and the activities of the antioxidative defence enzymes (the peroxidase activity in blood, the superoxide dismutase activity in the blood erythrocytes) are studied in progeny of tundra vole which are reproduced from parent inhabiting areas with different radioecological environment during a long time. The progeny had the preservation of the changed antioxidant status. The scale of the changing of the investigating parameters depend on the state of radionucleoids contamination of areas where tundra voles are caught, sex of rodents, the content of antioxidants in lipids of tissues of parents.  相似文献

Summary The DNA sequence was determined for the cytochrome c oxidase II (COII), tRNALys, and ATPase 8 genes from the mitochondrial genome of the meadow vole, Microtus pennsylvanicus. When compared to other rodents, three different patterns of evolutionary divergence were found. Nucleotide variation in tRNALys is concentrated in the TC loop. Nucleotide variation in the COII gene in three genera of rodents (Microtus, Mus, Rattus) consists predominantly of transitions in the third base positions of codons. The predicted amino acid sequence in highly conserved (>92% similarity). Analysis of the ATPase 8 gene among four genera (Microtus, Cricetulus, Mus, Rattus) revealed more detectable transversions than transitions, many fixed first and second position mutations, and considerable amino acid divergence. The rate of nucleotide substitution at nonsynonymous sites in the ATPase 8 gene is 10 times the rate in the COII gene. In contrast, the estimated absolute mutation rate as determined by analysis of nucleotide substitutions at fourfold degenerate sites probably is the same for the two genes. The primary sequences of the ATPase 8 and COII peptides are constrained differently, but each peptide is conserved in terms of predicted secondary-level configuration.  相似文献

视觉对动物的生活习性尤其是取食具有重要意义。本文对根田鼠视网膜的胚后发育进行了研究,结果表明:出生3d内根田鼠视网膜分化程度较低,神经节母细胞层尚未分化,占据了视网膜层的一半以上;5日龄时,外网层开始出现;6日龄时,外网层开始清晰,外核层与内核层更加清晰;18日龄时,视网膜结构与成年根田鼠结构相似,各层结构清晰可见。测量了神经节细胞层和外核层的细胞密度以及核层厚度,结果表明:随着个体发育,外核层细胞层厚度及细胞密度不断增加;而神经节细胞层厚度及细胞密度不断减少。与褐家鼠、黑线姬鼠、大仓鼠、棕色田鼠、甘肃鼢鼠、达乌尔黄鼠、岩松鼠视网膜相比,根田鼠视网膜结构介于夜行性与昼行性鼠类之间[动物学报52(2):376-382,2006]。  相似文献

A species-wide phylogeographical study of the root vole (Microtus oeconomus) was performed using the whole 1140 base pair mitochondrial (mt) cytochrome b gene. We examined 83 specimens from 52 localities resulting in 65 unique haplotypes. Our results demonstrate that the root vole is divided into four main mtDNA phylogenetic lineages that seem to have largely allopatric distributions. Net divergence estimates (2.0-3.5%) between phylogroups, as well as relatively high nucleotide diversity estimates within phylogroups, indicate that the distinct phylogeographical structure was initiated by historical events that predated the latest glaciation. European root voles are divided into a Northern and a Central mtDNA phylogroup. The mtDNA data in concert with fossil records imply that root voles remained north of the classical refugial areas in southern Europe during the last glacial period. The currently fragmented populations in central Europe belong to a single mtDNA phylogroup. The Central Asian and the North European lineages are separated by the Ural Mountains, a phylogeographical split also found in collared lemmings (Dicrostonyx) and the common vole (M. arvalis). The Beringian lineage occurs from eastern Russia through Alaska to northwestern Canada. This distribution is congruent with the traditional boundaries of the Beringian refugium and with phylogeographical work on other organisms. In conclusion, similarities between the phylogeographical patterns in the root vole and other rodents, such as Arctic and subarctic lemmings, as well as more temperate vole species, indicate that late Quaternary geological and climatic events played a strong role in structuring northern biotic communities.  相似文献

1. After iso-osmotic salt loading (1% NaCl, 1.25% KCl, 0.75% MgCl2 solutions, each load making up 5% body weight) the water voles excreted 66.2% sodium, 84.4% potassium, 18.8% magnesium over a 4 hr period. The big gerbil excreted 20%, 58.9% and 7.1% respectively over the same period. The volume of the water excreted was greater in the case of the water vole. 2. There were no considerable changes in plasma ion concentration in rodents of the species studied after salt loading. 3. The gerbils and water voles had no significant changes in the renal cortex electrolyte concentrations as a result of isotonic salt loads. The highest sodium cortico-papillar gradient was found in the gerbils when experimenting with the isotonic NaCl loading. It was somewhat lower with the KCl load, and significantly lower with water and MgCl2 loads. 4. Under the same experimental conditions, no major changes in the papilla sodium concentration were found in the water voles. 5. The concentrations of potassium, calcium and magnesium were practically alike in all zones of the renal tissue of both rodent species, ion loads producing no effect. 6. The comparison of the renal volume and ion regulating function in rodents with different urine osmotic concentration systems proves the independent existence of renal functions. The greater rate of renal fluid and ion excretion in the water voles is coupled with less specific ion regulation.  相似文献

Substantial changes in the composition of crops in Central Europe during the last two decades (increasing areas of maize, rape and sunflower fields) have significantly influenced the structure and dynamics of animal communities, though there is a lack of data available for small rodents. In this study, we assessed the importance of these three crops for rodents and compared it with traditional crops (alfalfa, barley, wheat). We observed that herbivorous species (especially the common vole) do not live in crops which do not have green leaves near the ground (e.g. sunflower, maize), while mobile granivorous species can inhabit all types of crop. We confirmed the presumed differences in habitat preferences; however we rejected the hypothesis of a general increase of rodent abundance during the vegetative season in managed fields. We found that (1) maize and sunflower had no importance for common voles, but they were favored habitats for wood mice; (2) numbers of wood mice in rape decreased during the season, while abundances of common voles increased; (3) common vole populations tended to increase during the season in all suitable crops (alfalfa, barley, wheat, tendency in maize and rape); (4) wood mice populations seemed stable in all crops; i.e. without a seasonal increase. It can be concluded that even if the new crop fields are an important part of the agricultural landscape, they are only a temporal habitat for small mammals, especially granivorous species.  相似文献

Natural hybridization between species is not a rare event. In arvicoline rodents, hybridization is known to occur in the wild and/or in captivity. In the Microtus arvalis group, cytogenetic studies revealed that there were two distinct chromosomal forms (2n = 46 but a different fundamental number of autosomes). These forms have been attributed to two cryptic species: the common (arvalis) and Altai (obscurus) voles. Recently, individuals with intermediate karyotypes (F1 and backcrosses) were discovered in central European Russia, and, for this reason, other studies have regarded obscurus and arvalis as conspecific. In the present study, to address the question of the species limits in the Altai vole and to infer its evolutionary history, a phylogeographical analysis combined with multivariate morphometric methods and original chromosome data was performed. Two obscurus lineages were identified: the Sino‐Russian and South Caucasian lineages. Both lineages are characterized by low genetic diversity, resulting, in the former, from a past bottleneck event caused by encroaching periglacial areas and, in the latter, from recent rapid population divergence. Introgressive hybridization between the Altai and common voles appears to be the result of a secondary contact following the Last Glacial Maximum in central European Russia. Despite the fact that speciation is an ongoing process in most arvicoline species, the common and Altai voles are genetically divergent, morphologically and karyologically distinct, and exhibit contrasting evolutionary histories. For all these reasons, they should be ranked as species: M. arvalis and M. obscurus. © 2013 The Linnean Society of London  相似文献
