Changes in the spring arrival dates of migrant birds have been reported from a range of locations and many authors have focused on long-term trends and their relationship to temperature and other climatic events. Perhaps more importantly, changed arrival dates may have consequences for the breeding dates of birds which strongly influence breeding success. In this paper we take the opportunity provided by a monitoring scheme of the white stork (Ciconia ciconia) to examine several features of the timing of arrival and breeding in relation to chick production in Slovakia during the period 1978–2002. First arrival dates ranged from 5th March to 30th April, and hatching dates varied between 26th April and 8th July. Generally, early arriving pairs started breeding earlier and a shorter interval between the arrival of the first partner and breeding, expressed here as hatching date, resulted in higher breeding success.  相似文献

In contrast to the attention attracted by temporal trends of phenology, the spatial patterns of arrivals, departures or stays of trans-Saharan birds are still nowadays largely unknown in most of their European breeding areas. In the case of the white stork (Ciconia ciconia), some studies have attempted to describe its migratory patterns throughout some European countries but, to our knowledge, no one has related these patterns to some kind of explanatory variable which offers an ecologically-based explanation for the heterogeneous phenology observable among populations. Here, arrivals, departures and stays of this species, recorded in hundreds of Spanish localities, were related to a set of environmental, geographical, biological and spatial predictors, and modeled by multiple regression. The best model for arrival dates accounted for up to 34% of variability of data and pointed towards an earlier arrival in those populations located in south-western Iberia and with higher population densities. This last relationship is probably due to the competition for nest-site fidelity maintenance. However, no variable was able to explain properly the blurred spatial pattern recorded for departure dates. Departure decisions are strongly influenced by social behavior in this species and depend on collective decisions influenced by peculiar local environmental conditions of each year rather than macrogeographical gradients. Environmental, geographical or spatial variables also did not capture much of the observed variability in the length of the stays among populations. However, this variable was strongly related to the arrival and departure dates of populations. White storks stay longer in localities with earlier arrivals and, especially, later departures.  相似文献

During satellite-tracking investigations of 140 white storks (Ciconia ciconia), one individual, the long-term world record holder among birds, was followed along 12 migratory journeys over a period of 10 years. This long-term study confirms what previous several-year tracking studies of white storks had indicated: there can be great variability from year to year in the choice of winter quarters as well as in the routes and times of migration, intermediate destinations and stop-over periods, but constancy of winter quarters and migration routes is also possible. The variability may well be caused by external factors, of which food supply is probably predominant.Communicated by F. Bairlein  相似文献

We surveyed the Mesostigmatid mite fauna of nests of the black stork Ciconia nigra, to determine the role of these mites in the biology of their hosts. We present preliminary results obtained on the basis of material collected from 31 nests. A total of 1,615 mite specimens was recorded, belonging to 39 species. The most abundant species were Dendrolaelaps strenzkei, Apionoseius infirmus, Macrocheles merdarius and Macrocheles ancyleus, which constituted more than 65% of all the specimens recorded. The presence of large numbers of predatory mites could be beneficial to the birds, if they feed on the eggs and larvae of the bird’s parasites. It is likely that many of the mite species found in these nests were carried there by phoresy on insects, mainly Coleoptera.  相似文献

Summary Here we present a systematic application of magnetic resonance imaging (in the following called MRI) and magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) to the White Stork. The main aim was to demonstrate the annual cycle of fat deposition in the same individuals for comparison to wild conspecifics, to clarify the energy metabolism of this migratory species. To obtain sharp, high-contrast images of the interior of the body, the birds were kept still by enclosing them in simple plastic tubes with additional fixation of legs and head, avoiding the problematic sedation with drugs. Altogether 12 test birds (young storks) were monitored systematically for 15 months, to follow seasonal changes in the internal organs (mainly breast muscles) and tissues (mainly fat depots). At each examination 22 high-contrast pixel images representing serial dorsoventral sections through the body were generated with the computer program MatLab, after which the pixels per section image were converted to tissue components in cm2 and the distances between consecutive sections used to calculate the tissue volumes in cm3. To measure the fat in the breast muscle spectroscopy was used to determine the fat : water ratio, from which changes in fat content could be derived. The study revealed pronounced seasonal changes in the visceral and cutaneous/subcutaneous fat depots, which precisely paralleled the annual variation in body weight of the birds (see also the preceding paper, Berthold et al. 2001). The breast muscles exhibited the prolonged growth typical of the juveniles of large species but no conspicuous change at the migration periods. In this project MRI and MRS proved to be successful methods that show great promise.
Magnet-Resonanz-Tomographie und -Spektroskopie der jahreszeitlichen Muster der Körperzusammensetzung: Eine methodische Pilotstudie am Weißstorch (Ciconia ciconia)
Zusammenfassung In der vorliegenden Arbeit stellen wir eine systematische Anwendung der Magnet-Resonanz-Tomographie (Kernspin-Tomographie, im Folgenden MRT) und der Magnet-Resonanz-Spektroskopie (im Folgenden MRS) am Weißstorch vor. Hauptaufgabe war es, die Jahresperiodik der Fettdeposition an denselben Individuen zu ermitteln, um Aufschluss über den Energiehaushalt dieser Zugvogelart durch Vergleiche mit freilebenden Vögeln zu bekommen. Die erforderliche Ruhigstellung der Vögel zum Erreichen scharfer kontrastreicher Bilder des Körperinneren war in einfachen Plastikröhren mit zusätzlicher Fixierung von Beinen und Kopf möglich, so dass auf die problematische Sedierung mit Narkotika verzichtet werden konnte. Insgesamt 12 Versuchsvögel (Jungstörche) wurden 15 Monate lang systematisch auf jahresperiodische Veränderungen von inneren Organen (v. a. Brustmuskeln) und Geweben (v. a. Fettdepots) untersucht. Aus je 22 seriellen kontrastreichen dorsoventralen Schnittbildern durch den Vogelkörper ließen sich mit dem Computerprogramm MatLab Pixelbilder erstellen und dann die Pixel pro Schnittbild in Gewebeanteile in cm2 umrechnen und anschließend aus den aufeinander folgenden Schnittbildern die Gewebevolumina in cm3 ermitteln. Für die Fettbestimmung im Brustmuskel wurde durch Spektroskopie das Verhältnis von Fett: Wasser bestimmt, aus dem Veränderungen des Fettgehalts abgeleitet wurden. Die Studie ergab ausgeprägte jahresperiodische Änderungen der viszeralen und kutanen/subkutanen Fettdepots, die genau parallel zum Jahresgang des Körpergewichts der Vögel verliefen (s. auch die vorangehende Arbeit, Berthold et al. 2001). Für die Brustmuskeln ergab sich ein für Jungvögel großer Arten typisches lang anhaltendes Wachstum, aber keine auffallende Veränderung zu den Zugperioden. MRT und MRS erwiesen sich in dieser Arbeit als erfolgreich und vielversprechend.

The purpose of this study was to find out whether a set of habitat characteristics, derived from the National Corine Land Cover (CLC) database of habitat types, could indicate the occurrence of white stork nests in a settlement. The analyses were performed for the settlements closer than 35 km from the Drava River (northern Croatia). Sixteen habitat characteristics were determined around 257 settlements occupied with white stork nests and 152 control sites without white stork nests within the same geographic region. We performed multivariate inspection of the data and a non-metric multidimensional preference analysis. The best variables for stork habitat selection were: distance to the nearest grassland habitat (P < 0.0001), distance to three nearest grassland habitats (P < 0.0001), altitude of the settlements above the sea level (P < 0.001), sum of distances to the three nearest agricultural mosaic habitats (P < 0.005) and standardized area proportion of forests (P < 0.05). The explanatory capacity of the model was 81.1%. We conclude that it is possible to define a small number of habitat characteristics derived from CLC database which can indicate the occurrence of white stork nests.  相似文献

We describe the case of an unusually large capercaillie Tetrao urogallus clutch consisting of 12 eggs, of which four chicks hatched. Eight eggs died in an early stage of development. Genetic analyses revealed that the putative mother of the chicks was different from the one laying the unhatched eggs. We compare our results with reports from clutches elsewhere and conclude that nest site adoption is a likely explanation for joint clutches in grouse.This revised version was published online in December 2004. In recent years, human activities appear to present the greatest threat to the Chinese white dolphin (Sousa chinensis). Increasing death records of this species in Xiamen have already become a focus of attention among the local government, the public, and the media. A comprehensive understanding about the status of Xiamen population is important not only to evaluate the conservation measures taken previously, but to design adaptive measures appropriate to this population. In this study, a survey using line-transect methodology was carried out to cover an area of about 700 km2 in Xiamen waters. A total of 102 separate sightings were made on 6157 km of transect line. The abundance estimate ranged from 67 (CV=41.6%) to 93 (CV=26.34%), with an average of 86 (CV=20.16%). Overall, Xigang (West harbor) and Jiyu represented the major area of distribution in Xiamen. Significant seasonal changes in distribution were found. In spring, significant numbers of dolphins occurred in Xigang and few in other areas, while in other seasons, the sighting rate in Xigang decreased relatively with sightings in Jiyu, Dapan, and Dadeng increasing obviously, suggesting an outward movement pattern of Chinese white dolphins from the inside harbor to outside waters after spring. Some suggestions for redesigning the Xiamen Nature Reserve and other management measures are put forward.  相似文献

Species of the genus Macrolophus (Hemiptera: Miridae) are thought to be effective predators in reducing the numbers of several pests in vegetable crops. These predators are omnivorous as in addition to prey they also utilize plant sap for growth and development. Populations of these predators build in non-crop host plants and provide inoculum that augments natural control of insect pests in adjacent crops. However, to enhance their effectiveness in crops requires knowledge of their trophic relationships with host plants. In this study, the ecological relationships between the predator Macrolophus melanotoma (Costa) ( =  M. caliginosus Wagner) and its most important natural host plant Dittrichia viscosa L. (W. Greuter) (Asteraceae) were investigated in the laboratory and in field studies. A 2-year field study of M. melanotoma populations on D. viscosa was made using the percentage of plants infested by C. inulae as a measure of aphid prey abundance. The field studies revealed that M. melanotoma populations were present throughout the year on D. viscosa reaching highest numbers in June and July despite very low levels of aphid infested plants. Laboratory life table studies were used to compare the survival and reproduction of the predator on D. viscosa leaves alone and leaves plus aphid prey (Capitophorus inulae (Passerini)). Predators reared on D. viscosa leaves plus aphid prey had an average developmental time of 16.73 days, fecundity was 69.55 eggs/female and the intrinsic rate of population increase was 0.0614/day. When fed only leaves, the developmental time was 21.13 days, fecundity was 10.80 eggs/female and the intrinsic rate of population increase was 0.0229/day. The results of the two studies suggest an important role for D. viscosa in conserving and augmenting M. melanotoma in agro ecosystems, and in the development of natural control augmentation strategies in vegetable crops.  相似文献

Herbivore population dynamics are governed both by bottom-up (plant-mediated) and by top-down (natural enemy-mediated) processes, with the potential for interaction between them. Pear psylla (Cacopsylla pyricola Foërster) is a phytophagous pest in pear orchards. Pear psylla is commonly attacked by several different natural enemies, but it may escape control, especially if fertilizer additions and new shoot production are not carefully managed. We tested the hypothesis that plant quality mediates the efficacy of an important natural enemy of pear psylla, Anthocoris nemoralis. One year-old caged Bartlett pear trees were fertilized at either low (5 mM N) or high (20 mM N) levels of nitrogen, then either psylla or psylla and Anthocoris were added to each tree. We measured plant growth, psylla population size, and Anthocoris establishment to determine effects of fertilizer and predation on psylla population dynamics. Trees receiving more N were taller, had longer total branches, a greater total number of leaves, and higher leaf nitrogen content. Psylla populations were also larger in the high N treatment. Anthocoris establishment and reproduction was positively related to the density of psylla at the time predators were added. And although psylla densities were, over-all, lower on trees where Anthocoris was present, the level to which Anthocoris suppressed psylla was not significantly affected by fertilizer level. These results indicate that the efficacy of this predator is not strongly mediated by plant quality, at least at the local (i.e. tree) scale. Minimizing fertilizer additions to the minimum level required for proper fruit set is likely to be an important feature of successful pear psylla biocontrol programs.  相似文献

The Lesser White-fronted Goose [Anser erythropus (Linnaeus, 1758)] is one of the most threatened Palearctic goose species, with the Fennoscandinavian subpopulation in particular having seen a drastic decline over the last century. In the 1990s, captive-bred Lesser White-fronted Geese were used successfully for reintroduction and restocking in Sweden and Finland. The discovery of Greater White-fronted Goose [Anser albifrons (Scopoli, 1769)] mtDNA haplotypes in some of these captive-bred birds (Ruokonen et al. 2000) suggested that hybridisation had occurred during captive propagation and led to the discontinuation of the release of captive goslings. Here we report two hybrids of Lesser×Greater White-fronted Geese that were collected on their wintering grounds in England in 1936 and Holland in 1966. Birds from western Russia normally do not migrate south to Western Europe. Hence, these birds most likely originated from the Fennoscandinavian subpopulation and were collected prior to the commencement of the captive-breeding programmes. Both specimens show a heterogeneous set of morphological characters, some of which shared with the putative parent species and others being intermediate between the two White-fronted Goose species. A Canonical Discriminant Function analysis positions both specimens between the two putative parent species, making their hybrid status likely. We show, thus, that hybridisation between Greater and Lesser White-fronted Geese does occur naturally, albeit perhaps infrequently, and argue that the presence of Greater White-fronted Goose mtDNA haplotypes in Lesser White-fronted Goose may be the result of this naturally occurring hybridisation. Our data provide additional information on the debate whether the restocking programmes were halted for the right reasons and whether it is desirable to re-commence with the reintroduction programme.  相似文献

The rock shag (Phalacrocorax magellanicus) is an endemic species from southern Argentina and Chile. In Argentina, the population is distributed along the Patagonian coast in 143 small colonies (5–377 pairs). We studied colony and nest site fidelity of rock shags at Punta Loma, Patagonia, Argentina. We banded 37 adults from December 2001 to June 2003, during two breeding and two non-breeding seasons. Nest site fidelity was extremely high during consecutive breeding and also non-breeding seasons. The high percentage of banded birds residing in the colony in consecutive seasons suggests that rock shags are highly faithful to breeding sites and supports the idea of low post-breeding dispersion.  相似文献

Estimate the richness of a community with accuracy despite differences in sampling effort is a key aspect to monitoring high diverse ecosystems. We compiled a worldwide multitaxa database, comprising 185 communities, in order to study the relationship between the percentage of species represented by one individual (singletons) and the intensity of sampling (number of individuals divided by the number of species sampled). The database was used to empirically adjust a correction factor to improve the performance of non-parametrical estimators under conditions of low sampling effort. The correction factor was tested on seven estimators (Chao1, Chao2, Jack1, Jack2, ACE, ICE and Bootstrap). The correction factor was able to reduce the bias of all estimators tested under conditions of undersampling, while converging to the original uncorrected values at higher intensities. Our findings led us to recommend the threshold of 20 individuals/species, or less than 21% of singletons, as a minimum sampling effort to produce reliable richness estimates of high diverse ecosystems using corrected non-parametric estimators. This threshold rise for 50 individuals/species if non-corrected estimators are used which implies in an economy of 60% of sampling effort if the correction factor is used.  相似文献

This paper examines a cryptic species complex comprising three nominal bee species: Colletes halophilus, Colletes hederae, and Colletes succinctus. Multiple individuals of each were sequenced for four gene fragments: mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase 1 (CO-1), internal transcribed spacer 2 (ITS-2) and flanking regions, elongation factor 1 alpha (EF-1α), and 28S. In addition, the distribution patterns and phenology of all species were examined. Fixed substitutions distinguishing the three species are present in EF-1α and ITS-2. Their distribution patterns differ clearly: Colletes halophilus is endemic to coastal habitats of the southern North Sea and the English Channel; Colletes hederae occurs from Slovenia in the southeast to southern England in the northwest; the range of Colletes succinctus covers most of Europe and reaches western Kazakhstan. Where the three species occur jointly in western Europe, their flight activities differ significantly. The genetic distinctions and the differences in distribution, phenology and flower specialisation clearly support their status as distinct species.  相似文献

Early detection is the most effective way to mitigate the effects of harmful algal blooms (HAB). Cell counts based on examination of microplankton samples using settling chambers and visual inspection with an inverted microscope are tedious and time consuming, and counting precision is generally poor at low cell densities. The FlowCAM is a continuous imaging flow cytometer designed to characterize particles in the microplankton size range (20–200 μm diameter). In this study we examined the ability of the FlowCAM to improve routine monitoring protocols for HAB species by automatically recording information on size and fluorescence per cell. This will eliminate the need to examine cells outside the ranges of these measurements for our target species, Karenia brevis. We also tested the ability of image comparison software to match images of cells in mixed assemblages to images of the target species. For simple mixtures of cultured dinoflagellates, the ability of the image matching software to discriminate target cells varied greatly depending on how similar the two species were in size and shape. When target cells were added to natural plankton samples, the image recognition software correctly identified 80–90% of the target cells, but misidentified 20–50% of non-target cells in the size range of the target species. We conclude that the FlowCAM is less tedious and time-consuming than microscopy, allowing for examination of more cells for greater counting precision. The cell recognition software helps reduce the numbers of cells that must be screened, but images must still be examined by a trained operator to identify the HAB species of interest.  相似文献

Although water-limited environments are detrimental to cotton growth and productivity worldwide, identification of cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) genotypes that are less sensitive to drought may improve productivity in drought prone areas. The objective of the study was to assess genotypic variation for drought tolerance in cotton varieties using physiological attributes as selection criteria, and to determine the relationship of physiological attributes with productivity traits. The association of target physiological traits for drought tolerance (photosynthetic rate (Pn), stomatal conductance (gs), and transpiration rate (E)) with productivity traits under well-watered (W1) and water-limited (W2) regimes was analyzed using 32 public cotton cultivars/bred lines in two field experiments conducted during the normal cotton growing seasons 2003 and 2004. Seed cotton yield (SCY) and biological yield (BY) were markedly affected under W2 regime in all cultivars except the outstanding performance of CIM-1100 and RH-510 proving their superiority to other cultivars in drought tolerance. Conversely, FH-901, FH-634, and FH-2000 were high yielding under W1 regime; however, exhibited a sharp decline in yield under W2 regime. A positive correlation between SCY and BY under water stress (r=0.44 in 2003; r=0.69 in 2004) indicates that BY is also a primary determinant of SCY under water stress and genetic improvement of BY under water-limited environment may also improve SCY. Pn, gs, and E were significantly reduced by water stress. Substantial genotypic variation for gas exchange attributes existed among the cotton cultivars. A positive association (P<0.01) was observed between gs and E under both regimes in both years indicating the prevalence of stomatal control of transpiration. The positive association (P<0.01) between Pn and gs in both years in W2 regime indicates also a major role of stomatal effects in regulating leaf photosynthesis under water-limited conditions. Pn was significantly correlated with SCY (P<0.01) and BY (P<0.05 in 2003; P<0.01 in 2004) in W2 regime; however, the level of these associations was not significant in W1 regime. These findings demonstrate that association of Pn with productivity is effective under water-limited environment and may be useful as a selection criterion in breeding programs with the objective of improving drought tolerance and SCY under water-limited environments. Moreover, association between SCY and BY under water stress suggests that genetic improvement of BY under water stress may also improve SCY.  相似文献

In the first attempt to re-establish a population of the red-winged grasshopper, Oedipoda germanica (Latr.), threatened with extinction in Germany, 32 adults (19 females, 13 males) were taken from a population in a limestone quarry, individually marked, and translocated to the “Leutratal” nature reserve near Jena, Thuringia, formerly inhabited by the species. A simulation model with two scenarios was run to determine the probability of re-establishment of this small translocated population. One of the two scenarios indicated that populations of 20 females could survive with optimal life history parameters. In 1994, the year of translocation, during seven nights of observation between July and September, 25 adults were re-observed at least once. About 50% of the females and 70% of the males were found in a 20 m radius of the release point, whereas a maximum distance of about 70 m was recorded for a female. Using minimum female life-span and oviposition data from greenhouse experiments, 545 eggs were estimated to have been laid by the initial inoculum in 1994. In the subsequent years 1995 and 1996, only seven and three grasshoppers were observed within 30 m of the release point in 1994. However, the translocated population obviously went extinct in 1997 because no O. germanica could be found in that or following years. By comparing source and release habitat, the possible causes of the failed re-establishment were elucidated. In the year of release a short mean adult life span of 26 days was observed, assumed to be the consequence of high predation, and resulting in a lower reproductive rate. In the following years, low soil temperature of the release habitat probably delayed egg hatching for about 1 week, delaying phenology and thereby reducing the period over which eggs could be laid. A rapid population decline resulted in only three females found in the year before extinction.  相似文献

The estimated population of the Tsushima leopard cat Prionailurus bengalensis euptilura is only 80–110 individuals. However, the cause of the population decline is not clear. We investigated temporal changes in the food habits of the cat and two other species of Carnivora (marten and weasel) inhabiting the Tsushima Islands by measuring δ13C and δ15N values in hair samples. Hair samples of the cat were collected not only from specimens and furs, but also from feces. The gathering of hair from cat feces was most efficient when the feces were collected in the spring. The food habit of male cats seemed to be more diverse and tended to comprise prey of higher trophic levels than the food habits of the females. The δ13C and δ15N measurements suggested that the trophic level of the food sources has been decreasing over the last several decades for the cat and weasel, but not for the marten. Increased consumption of prey from lower trophic levels in the food habit of the cat seems to be related to the decline of the cat population because these phenomena occurred simultaneously.  相似文献

The S-locus glycoprotein gene, SLG, which participates in the pollen-stigma interaction of self-incompatibility, and its unlinked homologue, SLR1, were analyzed in Raphanus sativus and three self-incompatible ornamental plants in the Brassicaceae. Among twenty-nine inbred lines of R. sativus, eighteen S haplotypes were identified on the basis of DNA polymorphisms detected by genomic Southern analysis using Brassica SLG probes. DNA fragments of SLG alleles specifically amplified from eight S haplotypes by PCR with class I SLG-specific primers showed different profiles following polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis, after digestion with a restriction endonuclease. The nucleotide sequences of the DNA fragments of these eight R. sativus SLG alleles were determined. Degrees of similarity of the nucleotide sequences to a Brassica SLG (S  6 SLG) ranged from 85.6% to 91.9%. Amino acid sequences deduced from these had the twelve conserved cysteine residues and the three hypervariable regions characteristic of Brassica SLGs. Phylogenetic analysis of the SLG sequences from Raphanus and Brassica revealed that the Raphanus SLGs did not form an independent cluster, but were dispersed in the tree, clustering together with Brassica SLGs. These results suggest that diversification of the SLG alleles of Raphanus and Brassica occurred before differentiation of these genera. Although SLR1 sequences from Orychophragmus violaceus were shown to be relatively closely related to Brassica and Raphanus SLR1 sequences, DNA fragments that are highly homologous to the Brassica SLG were not detected in this species. Two other ornamental plants in the Brassicaceae, which are related more distantly to Brassica than Orychophragmus, also lacked sequences highly homologous to Brassica SLG genes. The habitat selection and the factors influencing the distribution of the House Sparrow Passer domesticus in the municipality of Valencia (76 km2) were studied during the winter and breeding season. House Sparrows positively selected urban parks and gardens, patches of derelict land and horticultural fields; they avoided the built-up habitat and the orange groves. In the urban landscape, the abundance of sparrows peaked in areas providing intermediate cover of the built-up habitat; it was positively driven by the amount of park land per unit area, and negatively by the size of urban parks. Our results suggest that the conservation and habitat enhancement of even the smallest parks and gardens are likely key factors in addressing the decline of the House Sparrow in many cities.  相似文献
