Novel data on the biometry, size distribution and parasitesof Aequorea aequorea and Chrysaora hysoscella are provided frominvestigations conducted during summer and winter in the northernBenguela ecosystem. The relationship between mass and diameterof C. hysoscella did not change on a seasonal basis, and thispossibly reflects the aseasonal nature of the food environment. The changes in the size structure of C. hysoscella across theshelf and with depth agree with postulated population maintenancestrategies in the region. Aequorea aequorea was not stronglyparasitized, butC. hysoscella was subject to occasional parasitismby Hyperia medusarum, especially in winter when C. hysoscellais thought to reproduce. Parasites were distributed in a typical,negative-binomial manner on their hosts, but load was independentof host size. As medusae increased in diameter so H. medusarumtended to move from other tissues to the gonads. 相似文献

Heat shock proteins (hsp) in Aurelia identified by one-dimensional SDS-PAGE are of sizes 93,83,70,68,45, and 39 kD, the most rapidly labeled being hsp 70 in all developmental stages. Labeled hsp in the polyp are found mostly in the epidermis; gastrodermal nuclei are also labeled. The minimum temperature for induction of the proteins is about the same (27 degrees to 28 degrees C), regardless of whether polyps have been cultured at 15 degrees or 24 degrees C. Adults and planulae taken from natural water at 28 degrees C do not show accumulation of hsp 70. Induction of strobilation by raising polyps from 15 degrees to 25 degrees C is not associated with appreciable labeling of hsp. Polyps transferred to higher or lower salinity have decreased protein synthesis but do not synthesize stress proteins. 相似文献

The life cycle of Chrysaora lactea Eschscholtz, 1829, a common species on the Brazilian coast, is described. Mature medusae were collected and isolated in a
planktonkreisel, whereupon planulae appeared after 1–2 days. These planulae settled and metamorphosed into polyps. Fully developed scyphistomae
typically possessed 16 tentacles, and on strobilation produced from 2 to 10 ephyrae. The ephyrae were transparent and had
characteristic nematocyst warts on the exumbrella. Tentacles first appeared near the margin on the subumbrella. Ephyrae and
young medusae were maintained in laboratory conditions up to 7 months. 相似文献

Life cycle of Phacellophora camtschatica (Cnidaria: Scyphozoa) 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Chad L. Widmer 《Invertebrate Biology》2006,125(2):83-90
Abstract. Gelatinous zooplankton play important roles in marine ecosystems and at times can have significant impacts on human activities. Many scyphozoans have enigmatic life cycles and the specific habitat for benthic life history stages is unknown. This is especially true for many of the large surface-cruising scyphomedusae of the northeast Pacific Ocean. Phacellophora camtschatica belongs to the family Ulmaridae and is known to have scyphistomae in the life history. However, the life cycle of P. camtschatica has not been formally described. Here the life cycle of members of P. camtschatica is described based on laboratory observations and compared with early life history stages in the scyphomedusa Aurelia labiata . 相似文献

Sixty-two specimens of the sea nettle,Chrysaora quinquecirrha, were caught in the lower Chesapeake Bay, homogenized, and samples plated on a yeast extract-Bay water agar. Bacterial colonies were selected randomly, purified, and tested for 180 characteristics. Computer analysis permitted clustering of the 208 isolates into 15 groups (comprised of 133 strains) plus 75 nongrouped strains which failed to associate with any group at the 70% similarity level. The majority of the isolates (68.8%) wereVibrio species. These included 110 of the grouped strains (forming 12 of the 15 groups) and 33 of the nongrouped strains. The remainder of the isolates were distributed as follows:Pseudomonas (11.6%),Bacillus (8.2%),Flavobacterium (2.4%),Acinetobacter (2.4%),Moraxella (1.9%),Cytophaga (1.9%), Gram-positive cocci (1.4%), and miscellaneous (1.4%). All theBacillus were isolated from a group of moribund nettles and reflect an abnormal condition.Vibrio species predominated in the five catches of healthy nettles, but were distinctly different for each catch. 相似文献

The genus Aurelia is one of the major contributors to jellyfish blooms in coastal waters, possibly due in part to hydroclimatic and anthropogenic causes, as well as their highly adaptive reproductive traits. Despite the wide plasticity of cnidarian life cycles, especially those recognized in certain Hydroza species, the known modifications of Aurelia life history were mostly restricted to its polyp stage. In this study, we document the formation of polyps directly from the ectoderm of degenerating juvenile medusae, cell masses from medusa tissue fragments, and subumbrella of living medusae. This is the first evidence for back-transformation of sexually mature medusae into polyps in Aurelia sp.1. The resulting reconstruction of the schematic life cycle of Aurelia reveals the underestimated potential of life cycle reversal in scyphozoan medusae, with possible implications for biological and ecological studies. 相似文献

Unsettled stoloniferous scyphopolyps ofAurelia aurita Lamarck were offered different substrates for settlement under defined conditions. On addition of different biogenic and abiotic substrates, a pure strain of bacteria, a species of Micrococcaceae, was observed to trigger the settlement of the stolon. The settlement reaction only takes place following direct contact with the bacteria; sterile filtrated culture medium of the same bacterial strain was not able to induce settlement. The bacteria were found to be effective on stolon settlement during the logarithmic growth phase, but not during the stationary phase. 相似文献

The hypothesis that the common eastern North Pacific Aurelia is A. aurita is falsified with morphological analysis. The name Aurelia labiata is resurrected, and the species is redescribed, to refer to medusae differing from A. aurita by a suite of characters related to a broad and elongated manubrium. Specifically, the oral arms are short, separated by and arising from the base of the fleshy manubrium, and the planulae are brooded upon the manubrium itself, rather than on the oral arms. Aurelia aurita possesses no corresponding enlarged structure. Furthermore, the number of radial canals is typically much greater in A. labiata, and thus the canals often appear more anastomosed than in A. aurita. Finally, most A. labiata medusae possess a 16-scalloped bell margin, whereas the margin is 8-scalloped in most A. aurita. Separation of the two forms has previously been noted on the basis of allozyme and isozyme analyses and on the histology of the neuromuscular system. Partial 18S rDNA sequencing corroborates these findings. Three distinct morphotypes of A. labiata, corresponding to separate marine bioprovinces, have been identified among 17 populations from San Diego, California, to Prince William Sound, Alaska. The long-undisputed species A. limbata may be simply a color morph of A. labiata, or a species within a yet-unelaborated A. labiata species complex. The first known introduction of Aurelia cf. aurita into southern California waters is documented. Although traditional jellyfish taxonomy tends to recognize many species as cosmopolitan or nearly so, these results indicate that coastal species, such as A. labiata, may experience rapid divergence among isolated populations, and that the taxonomy of such species should therefore be scrutinized with special care. 相似文献

Aurelia aurita is a cosmopolite species of scyphomedusae. Its anatomy and life cycle are well investigated. This work provides a detailed study on development and structure of A. aurita planula before and during its metamorphosis. Intravital observations and histology study during the settlement and metamorphosis of the planulae demonstrated that the inner manubrium lining of primary polyp (gastroderm) develops from the ectoderm of the planula posterior end. The spatial and temporal dynamics of serotonergic cells from the early embryonic stages until the formation of the primary polyp were studied for the first time. In addition, the distribution of tyrosinated tubulin and neuropeptide RF-amide at different stages of A. aurita development was traced. 相似文献

The haemolytic power of isolated nematocysts from the scyphozoan Pelagia noctiluca was studied with attention to the effect of osmotic protectants as carbohydrates at different MW, cations as Mg2+, Ca2+, Ba2+,Cu2+, K+; proteases as collagenase, trypsin, alpha-chymotrypsin, papain; and antioxidants. Crude venom was at first obtained by sonication of holotrichous-isorhiza nematocysts previously isolated from oral arms of P. noctiluca and then haemolytically tested upon human erythrocytes. Osmotic protectants were effective in inhibiting the haemolytic power depending on their molecular weight so that total inhibition of crude venom-induced haemolysis was observed after PEG treatment (polyethyleneglycol 6000Da). Amongst divalent cations only Ba2+ and Cu2+ significantly inhibited the haemolytic power of crude venom. Proteases seem not to alter the haemolytic activity while antioxidant compounds only slightly reduced the haemolytic power. Such findings may suggest a pore-forming mechanism for P. noctiluca crude venom rather than an oxidative damage to the cell membrane. 相似文献

Coronate polyps retract their soft bodies into a protective peridermal tube after mechanical irritation. Sediment may enter the tube of contracted polyps, however, and block the opening [Jarms, G., 1990. Neubeschreibung dreier Arten der Gattung Nausithoe (Coronatae, Scyphozoa) sowie Wiederbeschreibung der Art Nausithoe marginata Kölliker, 1853. Mitt. Hamb. Zool. Mus. Inst. 87, 7-39; Silveira, F.L. da, Jarms, G., Morandini, A.C., 2003. Experiments in nature and laboratory observations with Nausithoe aurea (Scyphozoa: Coronatae) support the concept of perennation by tissue saving and confirm dormancy. Biota Neotropica 2 (2), 1-25]. In the present study, the ability of different coronate species [Nausithoe aurea Silveira and Morandini, 1997, Nausithoe planulophora (Werner, 1971), Thecoscyphus zibrowii Werner, 1984, Linuche unguiculata (Swarts, 1788)] to expel sediment particles from the tube was investigated. In laboratory experiments, sand grains and mussel shell fragments were inserted into the tubes and the responses of polyps were observed. Particles were ingested as polyps extended themselves, and after extension, they were defecated. Ingestion was effected by an aborally directed flagellar beat of the flagellated gastrodermal epithelia that was reversed for defecation. Particles only slightly smaller than the tube opening could be expelled, and extension of the polyp was possible even if grains blocked 2/3 of the tube. However, if particles became stuck in the tube, ingestion was impossible and polyp extension failed. Comparisons among the tested species showed that expulsion success depended on tube shape and polyp morphology. In N. aurea and N. planulophora, less than 5% of tubes were permanently blocked. The cave-dwelling species T. zibrowii was not able to ingest particles due to its particular morphology, and in 25% of experiments with shell fragments tubes were permanently blocked. Thin, elongate tubes of the colonial polyps L. unguiculata were also often permanently blocked by shell fragments (50%), but new polyps were developed from the scyphorhiza to ensure survival of the colony. Solitary polyps were able to survive more than 5 months retracted beneath any blocking particles. After tubes were cut off beneath such particles normal polyps developed. From our observations, we suggest that coronate polyps can exist in habitats with moderate sedimentation, and that they can survive being temporarily buried. 相似文献

Effects of low dissolved oxygen on survival and asexual reproduction of scyphozoan polyps (Chrysaora quinquecirrha) 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Hypoxic conditions are common in many coastal environments such as Chesapeake Bay. While medusae appear to be quite tolerant of low dissolved oxygen (DO) concentrations, the effects of hypoxia on the benthic polyp stages are unknown. Chrysaora quinquecirrha (DeSor) polyps, and were subjected to 5 DO treatments (air-saturated [control], 3.5, 2.5, 1.5 and 0.5 mg l–1) in the laboratory. Polyp survival and development were documented over 24 d. Virtually no mortality occurred in any treatment during the first 5 d. Total polyp mortality after 24 d was 59.3% at the lowest DO concentration, whereas <3% mortality was observed in the air-saturated treatment. Formation of stolons and strobilae occurred in all treatments, however, the proportions of polyps undergoing stolonation and strobilation were significantly greater in all DO concentrations above 0.5 mg l–1. Polyp encystment was not observed in any treatment over the course of the 24 d experiment. These results indicate that polyps can survive and asexually propagate even during prolonged exposure to hypoxic conditions. 相似文献
