The body wall muscles of sanguivorous leeches power mechanically diverse behaviours: suction feeding, crawling and swimming. These require longitudinal muscle to exert force over an extremely large length range, from 145 to 46 per cent of the mean segmental swimming length. Previous data, however, suggest that leech body wall muscle has limited capacity for force production when elongated. Serotonin (5-HT) alters the passive properties of the body wall and stimulates feeding. We hypothesized that 5-HT may also have a role in allowing force production in elongated muscle by changing the shape of the length-tension relationship (LTR). LTRs were measured from longitudinal muscle strips in vitro in physiological saline with and without the presence of 10 μM 5-HT. The LTR was much broader than previously measured for leech muscle. Rather than shifting the LTR, 5-HT reduced passive muscle tonus and increased active stress at all lengths. In addition to modulating leech behaviour and passive mechanical properties, 5-HT probably enhances muscle force and work production during locomotion and feeding.  相似文献

Modification of leech behavior following foraging for artificial blood   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
In this study we examined whether the foraging for artificial blood affected the behavioral responsiveness of leeches to electrical stimulation of the body wall. After foraging for artificial blood, electrical stimulation of the posterior end of the leech significantly increased the percentage of stimulation trials that elicited locomotory activity—swimming and crawling—compared to the behaviors elicited when leeches did not forage or foraged for normal saline. On the other hand, shortening always dominated the behavioral profile of the leech to anterior stimulation even after foraging for artificial blood. In intact anterior end-isolated nerve cord preparations, we also found that application of artificial blood to the intact anterior end was sufficient to modify motor responsiveness to DP nerve stimulation. Full strength artificial blood had an overall negative effect on the likelihood of DP nerve stimulation initiating swimming and on the average length of elicited swim episodes compared to when pond water surrounded the anterior end. Application of a 10% solution of artificial blood to the anterior end led to an increase in the likelihood of DP nerve stimulation eliciting swimming.  相似文献

100 g reserpine, suspended in sunflower oil, was injected into the crop of six leeches (Hirudo medicinalis). Five leeches were injected with oil alone. The efficacy of delivering reserpine in this manner was assessed by measuring swimming bout duration. Four days after injection, swimming bouts were significantly longer in reserpine-treated leeches than in oil-treated or normal leeches. The amplitude of excitatory potentials elicited in velocity sensitive skin mechanoreceptors (T cells) by action potentials in mechanosensory cells which respond to sustained deformation of the skin (P cells) was no different in reserpine-treated leeches than in untreated leeches. The amplitude of inhibitory potentials in these T cells, produced by interneurons excited by P cells, was significantly larger in reserpine-treated leeches. Depletion of monoamines enhances inhibition in T cells. This is consistent with the established roles played by monoamines in promoting leech swimming and feeding behaviour.  相似文献

The rapidity with which the kidney alters sodium excretion (ENa) in response to changes in dietary Na was studied in Merino sheep by analyzing hourly ENa for three control days, and then for three days after a change in Na intake. On a control diet of 117 mmol Na, sheep had a pre-feeding ENa of 3.5 mmol/hr., a striking post-feeding natriuresis that began 2 hours after feeding (less than 0.01), peaked at 4 hrs. and then declined to pre-feeding levels 7 hrs. after feeding. When in balance on a high Na diet the feeding of a low Na meal resulted in marked depression of ENa within 4 hours after feeding. On a low Na diet, a 100 mmol Na meal resulted in an increase in ENa within 4 hours but a 50 mmol Na meal did not. Thus, the sensitivity of post-feeding natriuresis is between 50 and 100 mmols Na. As post feeding natriuresis is a naturally occurring physiological event it should provide a useful paradigm for the investigation of mechanisms controlling Na balance.  相似文献

The feeding behaviour of the freshwater leech Erpobdella octoculata was analysed by exposing potential invertebrate and vertebrate prey organisms (alive, wounded or dead) to leech attack in dishes, in the laboratory. The fact that E. octoculata is a macrophagous feeder that swallows living prey organisms whole (preferentially Chironomus larvae) is documented. However, it was repeatedly observed that adult leeches sucked the body fluids from wounded larvae. Likewise, cut pieces of earthworms, dead crustaceans and crushed water snails were attacked and the soft parts sucked in with the aid of the unarmed pharynx. Adult leeches sucked the body fluids from dead, decaying bodies of vertebrates (fish, newt larvae). Newly hatched young are blood suckers that rapidly attacked the wounded regions of Chironomus larvae and other invertebrates such as crushed water snails. It is concluded that the common leech E. octoculata is not only a predator, but also a fluid sucker and a scavenger. The ecological implications of this finding are discussed.  相似文献

Medicinal leeches (Hirudo medicinalis) are a standard treatment for venous congestion, a complication that can occur after reconstructive surgery. If the cause of venous congestion cannot be surgically corrected, then medicinal leeches are used to temporarily increase perfusion levels and maintain physiologic requirements within the congested tissue. Leeches increase perfusion within congested tissue by actively drawing off blood as a bloodmeal. Furthermore, the leech bite continues to bleed and relieve congestion after detachment because of the anticoagulation effects of leech saliva left behind in the bite. In a porcine model, a 10 x 10 cm cutaneous flank flap was congested by clamping the venae comitantes. Four medicinal leeches were allowed to attach to the congested flap, and parameters of active feeding and passive bleeding after detachment were recorded. The average bloodmeal volume for the medicinal leeches was 2.45 ml. Average passive bleeding for the first 2 and 4 hours after leech detachment totaled 2.21 and 2.50 ml, respectively, with 90 percent of passive bleeding occurring within 5 hours after detachment. Laser Doppler imaging indicated that the spatial arrangement of surface perfusion increases were localized to a 1.6-cm-diameter circle around the leech head (bite) and corresponded well with the visual return of normal skin tones to the same area. This study provides a realistic and quantitative estimate of the spatial and volumetric characteristics of leech feeding and passive bleeding using a clinically relevant model of acute, severe congestion.

The relationship between time of feeding and aggression in a one-male unit of captive hamadryas baboons was studied to determine if feeding once a day, at a designated time and in measured amounts leads to a high level of aggressive behavior. The performance of maintenance behaviors did not differ between pre-feeding and post-feeding periods, however, aggressive behavior significantly decreased after feeding.  相似文献

Parasites have been implicated in mass mortality events and population declines of amphibians around the world. One pathogen associated with mortality events in North America is an Ichthyophonus sp.-like organism that affects red-spotted newts (Notophthalmus viridescens) and several frog species, yet little is known about the distribution of this pathogen in wild populations or the mechanism of transmission. In an effort to identify factors influencing the distribution and abundance of this pathogen, we measured Ichthyophonus sp. prevalence and a series of factors that could contribute to transmission in 16 newt populations during spring 2004. In contrast to our initial hypotheses of trophic transmission, several lines of evidence suggested a role for the amphibian leech (Placobdella picta) in Ichthyophonus sp. transmission. We propose the mechanistic hypothesis that a leech acquires Ichthyophonus sp. infection when inserting its proboscis into the muscles beneath the skin of infected newts and transmits the infection to other newts in subsequent feeding bouts. We also found effects of host sex, body mass, and breeding condition on Ichthyophonus sp. prevalence and the number of attached leeches. The number of leeches attached to newts was strongly related to the proportion of newt habitat containing emergent vegetation, suggesting that anthropogenic eutrophication might lead to more frequent or severe outbreaks of Ichthyophonus sp. infection in amphibians.  相似文献

The effect of predator and prey body size on the feeding success of the British lake-dwelling leeches Glossiphonia complanata and Helobdella stagnalis was examined in the laboratory, and any involvement of size difference between the leeches in allowing coexistence in the field assessed. G. complanata breeds in advance of H. stagnalis and maintains a body size advantage throughout their annual life-cycle. In experiments, conducted at 14 °C and a photoperiod of 16 hrs L: 8 hrs D, three size classes of leeches of each species were each exposed to each of three size classes of each of five prey species, viz. Tubifex sp., Chironomus sp., Asellus aquaticus, Lymnaea peregra and Potamopyrgus jenkinsi. For each prey species, three different types of experiments were performed: one leech exposed to four prey individuals; four leeches of the same species with sixteen prey; and two leeches of each species with sixteen prey. In the first experiment, all sizes of G. complanata were capable of feeding on all sizes of the prey types offered; the same was true for H. stagnalis with exceptions of feeding on large A. aquaticus and large L. peregra. For both species, but especially for G. complanata, there was a trend within each size class of leech for decreasing proportions of fed leeches with increasing prey size, and within each size class of prey for an increasing proportion of fed leeches with increasing leech size; however there were several exceptions to these trends. Both leeches fed extensively on Tubifex sp. but there were significant differences in the proportions feeding on other prey types; G. complanata fed more on A. aquaticus and the two snail species, and less on Chironomus, than H. stagnalis. The effect of increasing the number of leech individuals from one to four individuals, of the same or mixed species, had little effect on the proportion of leeches which had fed. It is concluded that large G. complanata will have access to large individuals of certain prey taxa denied H. stagnalis, which may lessen the intensity of interspecific competition.  相似文献

Polar bears were held in captivity and fasted for an average of 38 d prior to being fed for three days. Blood samples were collected prior to feeding and then at one and three days post-feeding in 1984 and at one, four, and seven days post-feeding in 1985. The ratio of serum urea to serum creatinine varied significantly in 1984, rising from a pre-feeding mean of 11.0 (SE = 2.6) to 32.0 (SE = 3.2) on the first day post-feeding and then dropped to 22.8 (SE =3.2) in the last sample. In 1985, the ratio of serum urea to serum creatinine increased from a pre-feeding mean of 15.8 (SE = 2.3) to 61.2 (SE = 10.6) after three days of feeding and dropped to a mean of 29.2 (SE = 5.1) seven days after feeding ended. Serum urea levels varied over the study period in both years. No significant variation in serum creatinine levels was found in 1984, but in 1985, serum creatinine levels demonstrated significant variation, declining from the pre-feeding mean of 1.83 mg/dl (SE = 0.29) to 0.96 mg/dl (SE = 0.12) in the last sample.
The findings suggest that polar bears can have a low serum urea to serum creatinine ratio, similar to that found in hibernating black bears, or higher ratios after feeding. Polar bears can rapidly return to a fasting serum urea to creatinine ratio after food is withheld. Polar bears may demonstrate urea conservation, similar to that found in black bears, and may be able to move between a fasting and a feeding metabolism based on food availability throughout the year, an adaptation to life on the labile sea ice.  相似文献

Temperature and food availability are two important factors which affect fish growth and therefore are expected to influence habitat choice in fish. In this study, shoals of 16 juvenile roach, Rutilus rutilus , were given a choice between two chambers that differed in temperature by 1·5°C or 3°C whereas food availability was the same in both chambers (ratio 1 : 1) or higher in the colder one (ratio 4 : 1). The number of fish in each chamber was recorded for 10 min each during a pre-feeding, feeding and post-feeding period. Roach generally preferred the warmer over the colder chamber during the pre-feeding periods. Temperature had a significant effect on the distribution of fish during all three time periods whereas food availability was a significant factor only during the feeding period. The important role of temperature was emphasized further by the fact that a relatively small difference in the temperature gradient of 1·5°C had a stronger effect on fish distribution than a four times higher feeding rate during the feeding period. The implications for growth rates of such short-term decision-making of roach are discussed.  相似文献

Abstract During long post-feeding periods, adult tephritid flies (and apparently other non-blood feeding Diptera and even Hymenoptera) engage in behaviour consisting of oral extrusion and aeration of liquid droplets of varying size (‘bubbling’), proboscis pumping, and occasional deposition of regurgitate on the substrate that is followed by subsequent re-ingestion. Unlike evaporative cooling, which occurs in some insects when heat-stressed, these regurgitation behaviours take place regularly at moderate temperatures. To our knowledge, the significance of these behaviours has not been studied. We suggest that through bubbling behaviour, fully gorged Rhagoletis pomonella (Walsh) (Diptera: Tephritidae) flies eliminate excess water by evaporation to concentrate nutrients suspended in dilute solution, and release crop volume to allow resumption of fluid feeding or minimize the water load while foraging for other resources. Fly weights were measured continuously during pre- and post-feeding periods and in relation to occurrence of regurgitation behaviours. Fly weight losses during pre-feeding were an order of magnitude lower than post-feeding weight losses when flies exposed regurgitated liquid crop contents to air. During a bout of droplet extrusions, lasting on average 23 min, weight loss averaged 66% of the weight of liquid ingested by a fly in the preceding meal. Fly weight loss while bubbling was significantly correlated with duration of bubbling, temperature and relative humidity during post-feeding, and initial fly weight (adj. R2 = 0.95). Fly age, volume of liquid ingested and rate of pre-feeding weight loss did not significantly improve predicted weight loss through bubbling. Findings are discussed in relation to other behaviours adopted by fluid-feeding insects to eliminate excess water.  相似文献

The leeches Whitmania pigra and Hirudo nipponia live in similar environments but have different feeding habits. At present, there are few studies of the foraging mechanism of leeches with different feeding habits. In this study, we first used maze tests to show that these two species of leeches could locate and distinguish their prey through chemosensory activity without mechanical stimulation. However, the two leech species have different foraging behaviors: Individuals of W. pigra move slowly and repeatedly adjust direction through probing and crawling to detect the location of prey (snails), whereas individuals of H. nipponia move quickly, and after determining the location of food (porcine blood), they quickly swim or crawl to the vicinity of their prey. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) revealed that there are two types of sensory cilia and pore structures related to mucus secretion in the heads of both leeches. There are two differently sized types of chemoreceptors on the dorsal lip in W. pigra, which may have different functions during foraging, whereas in H. nipponia there is only one type of chemoreceptor, which is small. We detected the chemical components in the natural food of these two leech species by UHPLC–MS. There were 934 metabolites in the body fluid of snails and 751 metabolites in porcine serum; five metabolites unique to the body fluid of snails and to porcine serum were screened as candidate feeding attractants. Of these metabolites, betaine and arginine effectively attracted individuals of W. pigra and H. nipponia, respectively. In summary, leeches with different feeding habits use chemoreceptors to sense external chemical signals when foraging, and there are significant differences between species in foraging behavior, chemoreceptors, and attractants.  相似文献

It is shown for the first time that during 50 years of the Rybinsk reservoir's existence the abundance of parasite leeches (Piscicolidae) has increased, and the species composition has become richer. In 70 the leech Caspiobdella fadejewi (Epstein) was registered here as a mass species. This species became a real competitor to Piscicola geometra (L.) inhabiting the Volga river in all times. In early '90s the leech Acipenserobdella volgensis (Zykoff) appeared in the Rybinsk reservoir. Till 1987 this species was not found to the north from the Kuibyschev reservoir. An increase in number of fish leeches and an extension of their specific composition occurred not only in the Rybinsk reservoir but in the other reservoirs of the Volga cascade as well.  相似文献

The glossiphoniid leeches Helobdella stagnalis and Glossiphonia complanata co-exist on the stony shores of British lakes. Because both species have a similar life-style and are food limited, the question arises as to how coexistence persists. Laboratory experiments investigated if either leech has a competitive advantage on three foods, viz. oligochaete worms (Tubifex sp.), snails (Lymnaea peregra), and a worm-plus-snail mixture. A variety of densities with a range of ratios of the two leeches, and monospecific controls were used. The level of feeding ensured increasing food shortage with rising leech density. Experiments, conducted at 14° C, lasted 3 months. Regression values for growth against density in the controls indicated the occurrence of intraspecific competition in both leech species. Light mortality occurred at the highest densities. G. complanata gained significantly less weight in mixed leech cultures than in monospecific cultures at some of the highest densities when fed worms, but more weight when fed on snails. The opposite was true for H. stagnalis. When both prey types were provided, no differences at any density were observed for either leech. Differences in bodysize and feeding strategy between the leeches may be implicated in determining their feeding success on the prey types. Because the anti-predatory responses (e.g. shaking) exhibited by L. peregra are less when encountering an inactive than an active leech, the sit-and-wait strategy of G. complanata may aid snail capture. In contrast, the seek-out strategy of H. stagnalis, coupled with its relatively smaller size, may result in fewer successful captures. The active hunting strategy of H. stagnalis may be advantageous for the capture of oligochaetes which are relatively less mobile than snails. Offering both prey types simultaneously would have had an ameliorating influence on interactions between the two leeches. Findings provide support for the hypothesis that long-term co-existence between the two glossiphoniids in British lakes may depend, in part at least, on the occurrence of a snail food refuge for G. complanata.  相似文献

Medicinal leeches (Hirudo medicinalis L.) were maintained in large ponds in a commercial leech farm at Biebertal, Germany. The feeding of hungry adult leeches was performed on representative individuals that were placed on cloth soaked with mammalian blood obtained from a local butchery (pig, Sus scrofa). In a second set of experiments, cane toads (Bufo marinus) were used as host organisms. The leeches rapidly attached to the toads, explored the body and sucked blood. After feeding, the fully engorged leeches were placed into the pond or an aquarium. In this artificial habitat, the satiated leeches were attacked by hungry conspecifics, sucked off, and killed. This observation demonstrates that H. medicinalis must be classified as a cannibalistic annelid.  相似文献
