The distribution of 5 types of sensilla was statistically analysed on the 4–10th antennal segments of the male click beetle Agriotes obscurus (Coleoptera : Elateridae). The distribution pattern of the trichoid pheromone receptors (T2 sensilla) and the olfactory basiconic B1B2 sensilla on the antennae of male A. obscurus differs significantly from the distribution pattern of the contact chemoreceptors (T1 sensilla) and probably the non-olfactory B7 and D sensilla. A significant peculiarity of the distribution of olfactory sensilla is their location on the antennal segments as 2 separate (dorsal and ventral) fields of sensilla. The numbers of T2 and B1B2 sensilla on dorsal fields of sensilla of the 4–10th segments increase towards the apex of the antenna nearly linearly. On ventral fields of sensilla of the 4–10th antennal segments, the number of B1B2 sensilla is nearly uniform; the number of T2 sensilla in the proximal part of the antenna increases towards the apex, but on distal segments of the antenna their number stabilizes. It is characteristic of both the T2 and to B1B2 sensilla that their numbers are slightly greater on anterior than posterior sides of dorsal sensillar fields, and also greater on posterior than anterior sides of ventral sensillar fields of all antennal segments investigated. We assume that the number of olfactory sensilla on the antennae of male beetles coincides with the distribution of strength of olfactory signal on the antennae of beetles orientating in an odour plume. The distribution patterns of T2 and B1B2 sensilla of the male A. obscurus can be related to some behavioural peculiarities of olfactory orientation (walking or flying and vibrating of the antennae).  相似文献

There is a considerable contrast between the various functions assigned to Broca''s region and its relatively simple subdivision into two cytoarchitectonic areas (44 and 45). Since the regional distribution of transmitter receptors in the cerebral cortex has been proven a powerful indicator of functional diversity, the subdivision of Broca''s region was analyzed here using a multireceptor approach. The distribution patterns of six receptor types using in vitro receptor autoradiography revealed previously unknown areas: a ventral precentral transitional cortex 6r1, dorsal and ventral areas 44d and 44v, anterior and posterior areas 45a and 45p, and areas op8 and op9 in the frontal operculum. A significant lateralization of receptors was demonstrated with respect to the cholinergic M2 receptor, particularly in area 44v+d. We propose a new concept of the anterior language region, which elucidates the relation between premotor cortex, prefrontal cortex, and Broca''s region. It offers human brain homologues to the recently described subdivision of area 45, and the segregation of the ventral premotor cortex in macaque brains. The results provide a novel structural basis of the organization of language regions in the brain.  相似文献

A comparative SEM study of the sensilla of larval Delia radicum, D. floralis and D. antiqua (Diptera : Anthomyiidae) was undertaken. All had a dorsal organ and an anterior organ. These may contain olfactory receptors, contact chemo- and mechanoreceptors. Delia radicum and D. floralis also possessed a ventral organ, which is a possible chemo- and mechanoreceptor. Campaniform (mechanoreceptor) and hair sensilla, which may be humidity receptors, were present on the body segments.  相似文献

It is well known that parts of earthworms can survive if they are cut off. Our aim was to link the regeneration capacity of an earthworm, Eisenia fetida (Oligochaeta, Annelida) with the site of the amputation, so we amputated earthworms at different body segment locations along the length of the body to examine the different survival rates and regeneration lengths of the anterior, posterior, and medial sections.
The greatest survival rates occurred for earthworms with the most body segments remaining after amputation. The anterior regeneration lengths were of two types. The lengths of regeneration of amputated from body segment 6/7 to further down the body posteriorly increased gradually (Type LI). However, the regeneration lengths of earthworm which were amputated behind the 23rd segment, with less than a quarter of the total segments remaining, did not increase until the blastema and tail bud formation (Type LII). These treatments were not completely regeneration. There were significant differences in both survival rates and lengths of regeneration lengths between immature earthworms and clitellate adult earthworms during the early stages of regeneration, but not at later stages of regeneration. The immature earthworms had a greater regeneration potential than clitellate adults amputated at the same segment. The survival rates of earthworms were correlated significantly with the number of body segments remaining after amputation, but not with the position of the amputation. The relationships between the survival rates and the numbers of remaining segments could be described by linear regressions. The anterior regeneration lengths were correlated with the position of the amputation, but not with the number of remaining segments; the posterior regeneration lengths, were not correlated with the number of segments remaining nor the amputation position. The anterior regeneration length was not related to the survival rates for all earthworm amputations after 30 days but was related in this way after 60 days.  相似文献

On stimulation of the head, the caudal 20-30 segments of intact earthworms exhibit a marked dorso-ventral flattening reflex which is an element of the escape response. When the tail is removed this reflex is reconstituted gradually in segments anterior to the amputation level without regeneration of new tail segments. It takes longer to reestablish the flattening if larger parts of the body are cut off, but after 60 days p.o. all animals regained the full response independent of the number of segments amputated. Extirpation of three consecutive ganglia from the ventral nerve cord also suffices to develop flattening anterior to the operated segments, but the reaction is less pronounced and appears later than after tail amputation. Moreover, it vanishes at the same time the normal tail flattening is observed again, presumably after regeneration across the gap in the cord. In different regions of the body, area and perimeter distributions of transversely sectioned axons in the three pairs of segmental nerves (SN I-III) of the cord were measured. Characteristic changes along the length of the animal were found for SN I and SN III. In tail segments the axonal size distributions are more variable than "typical" segments. The flattening reflex is mediated by axons in SN III (Pallas and Drewes, 1981). In body segments having reconstituted behavioral characteristics of the lost tail segments, the area of the largest axons and the general size distribution in SN III approximate those found in normal tail segments.  相似文献

The leech whole-body shortening reflex consists of a rapid contraction of the body elicited by a mechanical stimulus to the anterior of the animal. We used a variety of reduced preparations — semi-intact, body wall, and isolated nerve cord — to begin to elucidate the neural basis of this reflex in the medicinal leech Hirudo medicinalis. The motor pattern of the reflex involved an activation of excitatory motor neurons innervating dorsal and ventral longitudinal muscles (dorsal excitors and ventral excitors respectively), as well as the L cell, a motor neuron innervating both dorsal and ventral longitudinal muscles. The sensory input for the reflex was provided primarily by the T (touch) and P (pressure) types of identified mechanosensory neuron. The S cell network, a set of electrically-coupled interneurons which makes up a fast conducting pathway in the leech nerve cord, was active during shortening and accounted for the shortest-latency excitation of the L cells. Other, parallel, interneuronal pathways contributed to shortening as well. The failure of Aedes aegypti females to engage in host-seeking behaviour following a replete blood meal was investigated. Abdominal distention appears to be responsible for this immediate inhibition after feeding. Large enemas of saline had the same effect as blood in terminating host-seeking; this was not due merely to the presence of large amounts of fluid, but rather to the distention produced by these liquids. Since transection of the ventral nerve cord anterior to the 2nd abdominal ganglion did not release the inhibition in blood-fed females, we restricted the degree of distention of abdominal segments with wax. Distention of the abdomen anteriorly by a blood meal more effectively inhibited host-seeking than did distention posteriorly, suggesting that stretch receptors in the anterior portion of the abdomen regulate the response towards a host.  相似文献

Summary The oxygen-consumption of anterior segments (prostomium plus the first six segments) of earthworms, Lumbricus terrestris L., was measured around midday and in the evening on 25 days of late winter and early spring. The preparations were cut from animals which had lived in complete darkness for at least several days prior to their being studied. Data for 1) anterior pieces with intact suprapharyngeal ganglia (brain), for 2) pieces from which those ganglia had been removed about an hour before the segments were placed in the respirometers, for 3) pieces in which the circumpharyngeal connectives had been severed approximately an hour before measurements were made and for 4) pieces from which the ganglia had been removed 42 hours before recording, are presented in Tables 1 and 2.The average oxygen-consumption of preparations of the first three groups was 22 to 25% greater (p<0.05) in the evening than at noon, i. e., the circadian variation was found whether or not the central nervous system had been manipulated shortly before respiratory rates were determined. However, for the preparations of type 4), the differences between midday and evening rates were less, averaged only 16%, and were not statistically significant. Those findings may indicate that the longterm maintenance of the circadian variation in oxygen-consumption does depend upon nervous mediation or synchronization.  相似文献

Antibodies have been raised against a fusion protein containing the 3' region of the coding sequence of the Antennapedia (Antp) gene fused to β-galactosidase. The distribution of the protein on whole mount embryos and imaginal discs of third instar larvae was examined by immunofluorescence. In young embryos, expression of the Antp protein was limited to the thoracic segments in the epidermis, whereas it was found in all neuromeres of head, thorax and abdomen. At the end of embryogenesis, the Antp protein mainly accumulated in the ventral nervous system in certain parts of the thoracic neuromeres, from posterior T1 to anterior T3, with a gap in posterior T2. Comparison of Antp protein distribution in nervous systems from wild-type and Df P9 embryos, lacking the genes of the Bithorax-complex (BX-C), revealed a pattern of expression which indicated that the BX-C represses Antp in the posterior segments with the exception of the last abdominal neuromeres (A8-9) which are regulated independently. The protein pattern in nervous systems from Sex combs reduced(ScrxF9) mutant embryos was indistinguishable from that found in wild-type embryos; thus, neurogenic expression of Antp in T1 and the more anterior segments does not appear to be under the control of Scr+. All imaginal discs derived from the three thoracic segments express Antp protein. The distribution was distinct in each disc; strongest expression was observed in the proximal parts of the discs. In the leg discs the protein distribution seemed to be compartmentally restricted, whereas in the wing disc this was not the case. Antp protein was not detected in the eye-antennal disc. In embryos, as well as in imaginal discs, the protein is localized in the nucleus.  相似文献

The active reaction upon stimulation of the femoral chordotonal organ in stick insects is known to control velocity and endpoint of flexion movements of the femur-tibia joint (Bässler 1988). This article presents evidence that spiking interneurones in the ventral anterior median part of the adjacent ganglion participate in the generation of the active reaction as well as non-spiking interneurones in the dorsal lateral region do. Three different kinds of experiments lead to this conclusion:
–  - Ablation of the ventral anterior median part of the metathoracic ganglion ofExtatosoma did not qualitatively alter the resistance reflex in the inactive animal but abolished the active reaction.
–  - Recordings from spiking interneurones in the same region of the prothoracic ganglion ofCarausius show that some of these neurones responded to a chordotonal organ stimulus in a way, which depended on the behavioural state of the animal.
–  - Some non-spiking interneurones, which mediate the resistance reflex in the inactive animal, respond differently during an active reaction.

Mesophyll chloroplasts of three C4 sub types, Panicum miliaceum (NAD-malic enzyme), Panicum maximum (PCK), and Zea mays (NADP-malic enzyme), were prepared from protoplast extracts and used to study the photoreduction of O2. The processes of O2 uptake and evolution in these preparations, which lack ribulose 1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase, were studied simultaneously using stable isotopes of O2 and mass spectrometry. The responses of O2 uptake to O2 tension and addition of various substrates (3-phosphoglycerate, pyruvate, and oxaloacetate) were studied in detail. The addition of photosynthetic substrates differing in ATP to NADPH demands indicated that photoreduction of O2 in these chloroplast preparations is linked to ATP production and strongly regulated by NADP+ levels. The results clearly indicate that photoreduction of O2 could be of physiological relevance in balancing the ATP to NADPH requirements of C4 mesophyll chloroplasts.  相似文献

Summary This study provides neuroanatomical and electrophysiological evidence that an arrangement of three dorsal giant fibers, functioning as two distinct and dichotomous conduction pathways, has been evolutionarily conserved within the three major orders of aquatic and terrestrial oligochaetes. The medial giant fiber (MGF), activated by afferents of anterior segments, initiates anterior shortening; whereas, the two lateral giant fibers (LGFs), activated in synchrony by afferents of posterior segments, initiate a different response (usually tail withdrawal). Notwithstanding these common features, the design and function of LGF systems differ considerably in aquatic and terrestrial groups. In posterior segments of aquatic species, LGFs are disproportionately larger and conduct faster than MGFs. This contrasts with posterior segments of earthworms in which LGFs are smaller and conduct slower than MGFs.In addition, in aquatic tubificids, a single LGF spike is sufficient to evoke rapid and complete tail withdrawal, whereas a pair of closely-spaced LGF spikes are needed to elicit posterior shortening in earthworms. The graded nature of earthworm escape seems appropriate for worms that burrow in relatively hard substrates and may frequently encounter inanimate stimuli that evoke meaningless giant fiber spiking. On the other hand, the all-or-none nature of the tubificid escape appears advantageous for relatively sedentary worms that are vulnerable to intense predation but reside in aqueous sediments where triggering of giant fiber spikes by non-threatening stimuli is infrequent.Our studies suggest that anatomical and physiological modifications of giant fiber pathways in aquatic and terrestrial worms have occurred during the evolution of oligochaete nervous systems. Conditions for obtaining reproducible light-induced reduction of a b-type cytochrome in membrane fractions from coleoptiles of dark-grown Zea mays L. include a glucose-glucose oxidase system that lowers O2 tension and generates H2O2, substrate amounts of ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid which, in some manner, facilitates photoreduction by both added flavin and the endogenous photoreceptor and a sample temperature below 10 C. Cytochrome reduction could be obtained by photoexcitation of either a tightly bound endogenous receptor, which is probably a flavin, or added riboflavin, flavin mononucleotide, or flavin adenine dinucleotide. The latter flavin was the least effective. The endogenous photoreceptor appears to be rather firmly bound to the membranes, suggesting that this association may also exist in vivo. When any of the above four photoreceptors or methylene blue were used to sensitize the reaction, a cytochrome with a reduced α-band near 560 nanometers and a Soret difference peak near 429 nanometers was the electron acceptor. This cytochrome could be clearly distinguished spectrally from other cytochromes that predominated in the membrane preparations.  相似文献

The method described in this communication is sensitive and allows the direct determination in crude tissue extracts of the enzyme that hydrolyzes α-N-benzoyl-dl-arginine p-nitroanilde (Bz-Arg-NPhNO2). It may be useful in determining cathepsin B activity in crude enzyme preparations when the reaction mixture is incubated with an inhibitor of trypsinlike enzymes which are also capable of hydrolyzing Bz-Arg-NPhNO2.  相似文献

Two heparin-related preparations from beef lung and pig mucosa are able to inhibit the enzymic activity of the clotting factor Xa. These preparations were subjected to deaminative cleavage and periodate oxidation-alkaline elimination. The following structural features were observed: (a) N-acetylated and glucuronate-rich regions are short and frequently intercalated between N-sulphated and iduronate-rich segments of deca- to hexadeca-saccharide size; (b) in the latter segments, sulphated iduronate occurs together with non-sulphated iduronate and glucuronate in a random fashion. These characteristics are distinctly different from those of regular heparan sulphate and of archetypal heparin.  相似文献

The chromatophore-containing integument of Austrolestes annulosus always changes from a dark to a blue colour phase in vitro and therefore functions independently of a central control mechanism. In isolated abdominal segments, the reverse colour change occurs independently of the presence of central nervous system. The amount of change decreases with the size of the piece of integument; it varies over different parts of the body of the same intact insect, and it varies both in vitro and in vivo with time of day.A variety of experiments, involving ligation of abdominal segments and ablation of their ganglia, show that the terminal ganglion is primarily responsible for the release of a darkening factor which migrates in an anterior direction. Other ventral ganglia have a similar function but are of less importance.Transplants of terminal ganglia and injection of their extracts fail to restore capacity for colour change in ligature-isolated segments which have had their own ganglia removed. These findings, supported by histological observations, suggest that the darkening factor is a neurosecretion.  相似文献

Electron transfer activity in intact trichomes of Spirulina platensis (Nordst.) Geitl. can be observed with either CO2 or methylviologen as the Hill acceptor. Ferricyanide cannot penetrate the intact trichomes, but photoreduction of this oxidant can be observed when mediated by lipophilic oxidants such as p-phenylenediamine or 2,5-dimethyl-p-benzoquinone. The insensitivity of these reactions to dibromothymoquinone indicates that they are due largely to the activity of photosystem II. Direct photoreduction of ferricyanide can be observed in spheroplasts of Spirulina, indicating that such preparations have altered permeability properties when compared with intact trichomes. Preparation of these spheroplasts, which are osmotically fragile, requires that intact trichomes be washed with KCl and EDTA to induce lysozyme sensitivity and thereby allow digestion of the cell wall. The KCl/EDTA washing procedure used for spheroplast preparation alters the permeability of Spirulina trichomes, as evidenced by the ability of these preparations to photoreduce ferricyanide. This photoreduction reaction is insensitive to dibromothymoquinone, and is stimulated by high concentrations of divalent cations. During assays, the reaction is inhibited by the inclusion of polyethyleneglycol as an osmotic protectant. Photoreduction of methylviologen and NADP+ is also observed in the washed trichomes, along with an endogenously catalyzed photoreduction of O2 to H2O2. Photophosphorylation cannot be observed in the washed preparations, but cyclic photophosphorylation with phenazinemethosulfate is observed after mild sonication. These results indicate that KCl/EDTA-washed trichomes of S. platensis retain the full range of energy transducing capacities associated with thylakoid membranes of the intact trichomes; the washing procedure facilitates spheroplast formation and alters, but does not abolish, permeability barriers in these preparations.  相似文献
