A perceived danger of genetic modification of crops is that crop hybrids may not only become more-pernicious weeds of agriculture but that they may also become invasive of natural communities. New information on the extent of crop hybridization and the characteristics of modified crops is facilitating more-accurate assessments of these risks.  相似文献

Abstract. Most archipelagos are comprised of a nested set of communities, with species on depauperate islands representing proper subsets of those on richer islands. The causality for this common intra-archipelago pattern, however, remains elusive. Here, I present a Monte Carlo approach for investigating whether nestedness results from selective extinctions, selective immigrations, or both. Results for mammal communities of three nearshore archipelagos and two montane forest archipelagos suggested that nestedness may result from both forces. Nestedness was significantly associated with area (extinctions) for all archipelagos studied, and with isolation (immigrations) for islands of Lake Huron and the American Southwest. The degree of nestedness is influenced by the degree of variations among species and islands. In addition, our ability to assess causality of nestedness is influenced by our ability to calculate biologically relevant measures of isolation, and by the potentially confounding effects of selective immigrations and extinctions on community nestedness.  相似文献

The surnames of populations of the municipalities with Cimbro and Mòcheno origins are compared with each other and with other municipalities of the neighbourhood. This study starts from the supposition that a community of surnames shares a common cultural origin, maintained by reciprocal mobility. The analysis has been carried out by using estimates of the similarities between populations, the topological representations obtained by them and the spatial autocorrelation. On the whole, this research shows no evidence of peculiar distinctions between the populations that share Cimbro and Mòcheno origins compared to the neighbouring ones. Moreover, there is not any evident process of undifferentiated diffusion along all the directions. On the contrary, it is emphasized that belonging to the same geographic region and to the same administrative subdivision mostly influences the similarity between populations. The exception is the Cimbro municipality of Luserna, which presents a peculiar structure of surnames different from other municipalities of the same territory.  相似文献

Our closest nonhuman primate relatives, chimpanzees, engage in potentially lethal between‐group conflict; this collective aggressive behavior shows parallels with human warfare. In some communities, chimpanzee males also severely attack and even kill females of the neighboring groups. This is surprising given their system of resource defense polygyny, where males are expected to acquire potential mates. We develop a simple mathematical model based on reproductive skew among primate males to solve this puzzle. The model predicts that it is advantageous for high‐ranking males but not for low‐ranking males to attack females. It also predicts that more males gain a benefit from attacking females as the community's reproductive skew decreases, i.e., as mating success is more evenly distributed. Thus, fatal attacks on females should be concentrated in communities with low reproductive skew. These attacks should also concur with between‐community infanticide. A review of the chimpanzee literature provides enough preliminary support for this prediction to warrant more detailed testing. Simultaneous infection by multiple parasite species is ubiquitous in nature. Interactions among co-infecting parasites may have important consequences for disease severity, transmission and community-level responses to perturbations. However, our current view of parasite interactions in nature comes primarily from observational studies, which may be unreliable at detecting interactions. We performed a perturbation experiment in wild mice, by using an anthelminthic to suppress nematodes, and monitored the consequences for other parasite species. Overall, these parasite communities were remarkably stable to perturbation. Only one non-target parasite species responded to deworming, and this response was temporary: we found strong, but short-lived, increases in the abundance of Eimeria protozoa, which share an infection site with the dominant nematode species, suggesting local, dynamic competition. These results, providing a rare and clear experimental demonstration of interactions between helminths and co-infecting parasites in wild vertebrates, constitute an important step towards understanding the wider consequences of similar drug treatments in humans and animals.  相似文献

The response of natural phytoplankton communities, originating from oligohaline brackish water systems, to salinity changes (3–12 PSU) has been studied in small-scale mesocosms. Simultaneously, their reaction on iron manipulations was tested. The experiments, each lasting 7 days, were repeated three times at different dates. Treatments were evaluated with respect to biomass development (Chl a concentration), photosynthesis behaviour, and rough taxonomic composition. The investigated phytoplankton communities were dominated by cyanobacteria. Salt addition was not effective for overall phytoplankton biomass development. Filamentous cyanobacteria, however, were promoted by NaCl enrichments. Dark yield and non-photochemical quenching of fluorescence (NPQ) analyses revealed differences for treatments in dependence on iron supplements. Iron partially seemed to dampen the effects of salt shocks, and iron addition reduced both, capacity and irradiance dependency of NPQ, irrespective of the NaCl treatment.  相似文献

Studies on ant communities in agroecosystems have contributed to the knowledge of the effect of agricultural activities on biological communities. The aim of this study is to explain the effect of soil use on ant communities. We tested the hypothesis that there was a decrease in ant species richness and a change in the species composition at habitats with more intense soil use. We collected ants using sardine baits, subterranean traps and direct sampling at four habitats with different soil use (secundary forest, Acacia forestry, initial stage of succession and mixed crops). The ant species richness did not decrease with intensity of soil use. In successional habitat the species numbers collected using sardine baits and subterranean traps were significantly different. Species composition of communities had a pronounced variation, with the epigaeic and hypogaeic ant faunas of the habitat with high intense soil use (mixed crops) had low similarity with ant communities of the three other habitats. The predator species were restricted to habitats with low intensity of soil use. Then, species composition could better reflect the functional changes on ant communities than species richness. Our data can help to choose the component of ant community that better reflect the response of biodiversity to agricultural impacts.  相似文献

Capsule Early stages of the plantation forest cycle have distinct bird communities and bird density was significantly higher in the second rotation than in the first for a given age class.

Aims To characterize the bird communities in Irish second-rotation plantations and to compare them with those of first-rotation plantations.

Methods Point counts were used to survey 20 plantation forests in four age classes (Pre-thicket; Thicket; Mid‐rotation; and Mature) in the breeding season of 2007. distance software was used to generate bird densities. Ordination, indicator species analysis, and glm were used to analyse the bird communities.

Results Bird communities of Pre‐thicket and, to a lesser extent, Thicket age classes were distinct from those of more mature forests. Bird communities of Mid‐rotation and Mature age classes were indistinguishable from each other and were therefore combined into a single age class (Closed canopy). Pre‐thicket held significantly lower total bird density, but significantly higher migrant bird density, than this Closed canopy age class. Bird density was significantly higher in the second rotation in all age classes except for Pre‐thicket, but migrant density was significantly higher in Pre‐thicket in the second rotation. There was no difference in species richness between the first and second rotation.

Conclusions Differences between rotations are probably due to changes in vegetation structure, and the increase in second‐rotation forests in Ireland is likely to be a positive development for bird communities. Especially encouraging is the higher migrant bird density in second‐rotation Pre‐thicket, as some of these species are in decline throughout Europe. However, the largest differences in population density between rotations were exhibited by common species and such species will likely benefit most from future increases in the area of second‐rotation plantation forests.  相似文献

Aims The alpine meadow degradation could have profound effects on the grassland productivity. The aim of our study is to clarify the dynamic response of community productivity and species diversity in the process of alpine meadow degradation. Methods In the Institute of Geographic Sciences and Natural Resources Research, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Northern Tibetan Grassland Ecosystem Research Station (Nagqu station), we conducted stages experiments with multiple degradation levels: control, mild degraded meadow, moderate degraded meadow, severe degraded meadow and serious sandy meadow. Important findings The response of aboveground biomass to alpine meadow degradation showed a linear or nonlinear increased response patterns, but the belowground biomass and total biomass decreased nonlinearly. As observed in measurement of aboveground biomass, Margalef index, Simpson index, Shannon-Wiener index and Pielou evenness index also exhibit a nonlinear increased response to degradation. The results of structural equation models showed that belowground biomass has a positive relationship with soil carbon content (p < 0.05) and volume water content (p < 0.1). However, soil nutrient and soil physical properties had no significant impact on aboveground biomass (p < 0.1). Compared with soil physical properties, soil nutrition is an important factor influencing the diversity index. In our study, the nonlinear responses of productivity and diversity of alpine meadow were described by using the multiple levels of degradation in space. The results suggested that aboveground productivity cannot interpret the degree of degradation of alpine meadow, and by contrast, alpine meadow degradation should be measured by the change of plant functional groups, such as edible grasses and poisonous forbs. © 2018 Editorial Office of Chinese Journal of Plant Ecology. The effects of disturbances on coral reef fishes have been extensively documented but most studies have relied on opportunistic sampling following single events. Few studies have the spatial and temporal extent to directly compare the effects of multiple disturbances over a large geographic scale. Here, benthic communities and butterflyfishes on 47 reefs of the Great Barrier Reef were surveyed annually to examine their responses to physical disturbances (cyclones and storms) and/or biological disturbances (bleaching, outbreaks of crown-of-thorns starfish and white syndrome disease). The effects on benthic and butterflyfish communities varied among reefs depending on the structure and geographical setting of each community, on the size and type of disturbance, and on the disturbance history of that reef. There was considerable variability in the response of butterflyfishes to different disturbances: physical disturbances (occurring with or without biological disturbances) produced substantial declines in abundance, whilst biological disturbances occurring on their own did not. Butterflyfishes with the narrowest feeding preferences, such as obligate corallivores, were always the species most affected. The response of generalist feeders varied with the extent of damage. Wholesale changes to the butterflyfish community were only recorded where structural complexity of reefs was drastically reduced. The observed effects of disturbances on butterflyfishes coupled with predictions of increased frequency and intensity of disturbances sound a dire warning for the future of butterflyfish communities in particular and reef fish communities in general.  相似文献

In this study a biological classification based on diatom communities (a posteriori classification) was used to search for the most appropriate a priori classification in reference conditions, on the basis of 31 reference sites encompassing eight watersheds in the NE Iberian Peninsula. We considered three different a priori systems for comparison: (i) a typological classification (ecotypes and subecotypes) based on geomorphology and water flow; (ii) the watershed as a unit, irrespective of its size; and (iii) a classification based on the geographical distance between sites under the assumption that biological characteristics are increasingly similar in geographically closer sites. Classification in ecotypes and subecotypes was the most robust with minor differences between them. The watershed (hydrological units) classification was significant though weaker than the typological classification and there was a larger environmental variation within watersheds than within ecotypes. Finally, results showed that geographically closer sites were not more biologically similar in terms of diatom community composition. We can conclude that the ecotypological environmental-based classifications developed by the local water agency did adequately describe the biological classification based on epilithic diatoms.  相似文献

The environmental distribution of encrusting bryozoans settling on disarticulated and living bivalve shells has been recorded from five stations in Japan and New Zealand. Some insight into the observed distribution patterns emerges from information on the interaction of bryozoans with microbial mats. Advancing existing classifications, we have subdivided the encrusting bryozoan morphotypes into seven different growth types that largely reflect the biological potentials of bryozoans in competition for space on substrate surfaces. The frequency distribution of these types (s-/c-/m-/z-laminae, runners, spots, bryostromatolites) reveals the influence of microbial mats as a control factor of bryozoan substrate coverage. Microbial mats in turn are correlated with latitudinal gradients in Japan and New Zealand from cool-temperate to subtropical and tropical waters. Unlike erect bryozoans, laminar ones are probably underrated as facies fossils. Accordingly, laminar bryozoan growth types are reconsidered as a tool for paleoecological interpretation of marine hard substrate communities.  相似文献

Allelochemical interactions among aquatic macrophytes and between macrophytes and attached microbial assemblages (epiphyton) influence a number of ecological processes. The ecological importance of these interactions, however, is poorly understood; we hypothesize that paucity has resulted, in part, from (1) a narrow focus on exploration for herbicidal plant products from aquatic macrophytes, (2) the difficulties in distinguishing resource competition from allelopathic interference, and (3) a predominance of approaching aquatic allelopathy from a terrestrial perspective. Based upon recent thorough investigations of allelopathy among aquatic vascular plants, chemical compounds that influence competitive interactions among littoral organisms are amphiphilic compounds that tend to remain near the producing organism (e.g., polyphenolic compounds and volatile fatty acids). Production of these compounds may be influenced by relative availability of nutrients (particularly phosphorus and nitrogen), inorganic carbon, and light. Macrophyte strategies of clonal reproduction, in an effort to persist in these highly productive and competitive habitats, have contributed to reduced reliance upon sexual reproduction that is correlated with allelopathic autotoxicity among several dominant wetland plant species. Although few studies document the importance of allelochemical interactions in the wetland and littoral zones of aquatic ecosystems, abundant evidence supports the potential for significant effects on competition and community structure; effects of altered nutrient ratios and availability on plant chemical composition; and resultant effects on trophic interactions, particularly suppression of herbivory, competitive attached algae and cyanobacteria, and heterotrophic utilization of organic matter by bacteria and fungi.  相似文献

Native plants that persist in agricultural landscapes can be important for conserving and re-connecting fragmented biological communities, particularly to arthropods that live in and on them. However, their value as habitat may depend upon landscape context, which can differently impact species among trophic levels. We examined the communities of gall-inducing cynipid wasps and their parasitoids associated with a native wild rose, Rosa woodsii, in the Palouse region of southeastern Washington State and adjacent Idaho, to determine how this arthropod community varies with the landscape context of the host plant. Nine species of gall wasps (Diplolepis spp.), 11 species of parasitoids, and the inquiline cynipid, Periclistus sp. were sampled from R. woodsii shrubs throughout the Palouse region. We examined whether any gall-inducing cynipids were absent from R. woodsii in particular landscape contexts. We tested the relationship between community structure and landscape variables including landscape diversity and the proportion of prairie, agriculture, introduced grasslands, and built environments. All gall-inducer species occurred in every landscape context, although some species were more common on roses within prairie remnants. Gall-inducer and parasitoid species richness was positively correlated with the proportion of prairie in the landscape at radii from 100 to 1,500 m, with the scale of this effect differing between the two sample years. Landscape diversity had little or no effect on species richness. These results suggest that although R. woodsii supports diverse arthropod communities throughout a fragmented landscape, its greatest conservation potential will be realized if prairie remnants are conserved as well.  相似文献

In Aotearoa (New Zealand), the government funded studies on communicating biotechnology to different sectors in the community from 2003 to 2006. Subsequently, a researcher covering the Māori sector performed a content analysis of data gathered in the community. Qualitative analysis methods included examining text from participant interviews, focus groups, government documents, newspapers, Internet sites, and current literature. Content was coded by identifying common themes in the English and the Māori language. Words like genetic modification (GM), genetic engineering (GE), and biotechnology were explained to provide a basic understanding between the communities and researcher. The terminology applied in the research was essential to achieve communication between the researcher and the community. The resultant themes represented seven views to interpret the communities association with biotechnology: purist Māori, religious Māori, anti Māori, pro Māori, no Māori, uncertain Māori, and middle Māori views. The themes are taken from the analysis of data compiled after 3 years of completing different stages of a research project. The views indicate that a common understanding can be achieved in the diverse range of Māori tribal communities providing those communicating biotechnology can identify the view and interpretations communities associate with biotechnology. This knowledge is essential for government agencies, researchers, community practitioners, scientist, and businesses that desire to dialogue with Māori communities in the language of biotechnology.  相似文献

The co-occurrence of plant species within a community is influenced by local deterministic or neutral processes as well as historical regional processes. Floral trait distributions of co-flowering species that share pollinators may reflect the impact of pollinator preference and constancy on their assembly within local communities. While pollinator sharing may lead to increased visitation rates for species with similar flowers, the receipt of foreign pollen via interspecific pollinator movements can decrease seed set. We investigated the pattern of community flower colour assembly as perceived by native honeybee pollinators within 24 local assemblages of co-flowering Oxalis species within the Greater Cape Floristic Region, South Africa. To explore the influence of pollinators on trait assembly, we assessed the impact of colour similarity on pollinator choices and the cost of heterospecific pollen receipt. We show that flower colour is significantly clustered within Oxalis communities and that this is not due to historical constraint, as flower colour is evolutionarily labile within Oxalis and communities are randomly structured with respect to phylogeny. Pollinator observations reveal that the likelihood of pollinators switching between co-flowering species is low and increases with flower colour similarity. Interspecific hand pollination significantly reduced seed set in the four Oxalis species we investigated, and all were dependant on pollinators for reproduction. Together these results imply that flower colour similarity carries a potential fitness cost. However, pollinators were highly flower constant, and remained so despite the extreme similarity of flower colour as perceived by honeybees. This suggests that other floral traits facilitate discrimination between similarly coloured species, thereby likely resulting in a low incidence of interspecific pollen transfer (IPT). If colour similarity promotes pollinator attraction at the community level, the observed clustering of flower colour within communities might result from indirect facilitative interactions.  相似文献

Abstract. Low temperatures exert a primary constraint on the growth of high arctic vascular plants. However, investigations into the impact of temperature on high arctic plants rarely separate out the role of air and soil temperatures, and few data exist to indicate whether soil temperatures alone can significantly influence the growth of high arctic vascular plants in a manner that might direct community composition. We examined the response of high arctic plants of three functional types (grasses, sedges/rushes and non‐graminoids) to manipulated soil temperature under common air temperature conditions. Target plants, within intact soil cores, were placed in water baths at a range of temperatures between 4.9 and 15.3 °C for one growing season. Grasses responded most rapidly to increased soil temperature, with increased total live plant mass, above‐ground live mass and total below‐ground live mass, with non‐graminoids having the lowest, and sedges/rushes an intermediate degree of response. The ratio of above‐ground live mass to total live mass increased in all growth forms. Grasses, in particular, responded to enhanced soil temperatures by increasing shoot size rather than shoot number. In all growth forms the mass of root tissue beneath the moss layer increased significantly and to a similar extent with increasing soil temperature. These results clearly indicate that different growth forms, although collected from the same plant community, respond differently to changes in soil temperature. As a consequence, factors influencing soil temperature in high arctic ecosystems, such as global climate change or herbivory (which leads to reduced moss depth and increased soil temperatures), may also direct changes in vascular plant community composition.  相似文献

Functional traits reflecting the resource economy and growth strategy of plants vary widely both within and among ecosystems. Theory suggests that trait variation within a community may determine the relative abundance of species, though this idea requires more empirical support. We set up a long-term succession experiment in a nutrient-poor wetland, planting seedlings of twelve fenland species in different relative abundances and absolute densities, thereby creating 24 communities. The biomass of these species and the soil water and nutrient status of the system were monitored over ten years. Using these data, we could relate the changing relative abundance of species to five traits – leaf dry matter content (LDMC), leaf nitrogen concentration (LNC), specific leaf area (SLA), relative growth rate (RGR), and seed mass (SM).The initial communities converged after ten years to a common dominance–diversity structure, with two species accounting for 82% of total biomass. Soil water and nutrient conditions remained largely constant. By the end of the experiment, community trait structure had changed so that species functional traits were significantly related to their relative abundance. The most abundant species had high LDMC and SM, but low RGR and SLA, and varied little in LNC, suggesting that investment in leaf structure and retention of nutrients were most important for species dominance under low nutrient conditions. Our results provide experimental evidence that dominance–subdominance structures in plant communities are governed by functional traits.  相似文献

Background and aims

Shrublands are ecosystems vulnerable to climate changes, with key functions such as carbon storage likely to be affected. In dwarf shrublands dominated by Calluna vulgaris, the aboveground carbon allocation is associated with community age and phase of development. As the Calluna community grows older, a shift to net biomass loss occurs and it was hypothesized this would result in carbon stock increases within the soil.

Methods

The interaction of community age with ecosystem carbon stocks was investigated through a chronosequence study on three Calluna communities, aged 11, 18 and 27 years.

Results

Aboveground Calluna carbon stock increased significantly from the 11 year community (0.73 kg C m?2) to the 18 year community (1.11 kg C m?2) but did not significantly change from 18 to 27 years (1.0 kg C m?2), indicating a net carbon gain that corresponded with the growth phase of the Calluna plants. Moss was also found to be a relatively large contributor to aboveground carbon stock (e.g. 30 % in the Young community). Moss has often been excluded in aboveground assessments on Calluna heathlands which may have led to previous stock underestimation. Belowground carbon stocks to 25 cm were six to nine times greater than in the aboveground pools. For example in the Young community, 8 % of the carbon stock was located aboveground, 35 % in the organic layer and 55 % in the mineral soil.

Conclusions

Increased heathland age resulted in increased aboveground carbon stock until peak production was reached at approximately 18 years of age. However, the proportionally large belowground carbon stock eclipsed any aboveground effect when total carbon stocks were considered. The investigation emphasized both the importance of including the mineral soil in sampling programs and of consider all major species, such as bryophytes, and vegetation age in carbon stock assessments.  相似文献
