Ossicles of Holothuria (Metriatyla) scabra Jaeger 1833 vary mainly in early juveniles between 0.9 and 15mm long. While ossicles were not observed in auricularia and doliolaria larvae, which instead possessed elastic balls, ossicles were present in late pentactulae. Specimens 0.9–1.5mm long have tables with tall spire (4–5 cross beams), no buttons, and large irregular perforated plates. Specimens 5–6mm long have tables with moderate spire (2–4 cross beams) and a few smooth buttons. Specimens 9–16mm long have tables with low spire (1–2 cross beams) and knobbed buttons. From 30mm, ossicle are similar to those of adults, with more buttons and fewer tables. Several features of the ossicles of early juveniles, including their size, shape and prevalence, are unique to the species. Comparison with holothurian juveniles of other species indicates that presence of tables with tall spire and absence of buttons are plesiomorph characters in the evolution of the Holothuriidae.  相似文献

From 2 years of age, children enjoy trying to button and unbutton their jacket. The clothing of the children at this stage should have the form which fits their motor skills so as to develop their interest in buttons and to help their study in manipulating buttons. We observed processes of dressing and actions of buttoning and unbuttoning at the nursery school, for children in the 3.3-5.9 year range. Also, we experimented about dressing mainly for children in 2 year range to observe the process of manipulating buttons. As factors of experiment, we took two buttonhole directions (vertical and across) and three sizes of buttons (1, 2, 3 cm). The direction of buttonholes was significant at the 5% level. We recognized that buttonholes in the vertical direction were easier for children to button. We came to the following conclusion: for an open front of children's clothing, buttons having a 2 cm diameter and buttonholes in the vertical direction were the best.  相似文献

Human corneas usually are not available for research, as they are used for transplantation only. At the same time, scientific studies on cultured human endothelial cells can produce misleading results due to inevitable dedifferentiation. Therefore, an organ-culture model of porcine corneas—displaying endothelial cell death rates comparable to those of cultured human corneas—would be very desirable. Fresh pig eyes were prepared under sterile conditions to obtain corneoscleral buttons, corneal buttons and so called “split corneal buttons” (new preparation method) and cultivated for 15 days. Morphology of the endothelial cell layer was observed by light microscopy on day 1, 8 and 15. On day 15 staining with trypan blue and alizarin red S was performed. Photographs were evaluated in a randomized, blinded manner. Here, the morphology of the corneal endothelium and the number of endothelial cells per mm2 were analyzed. After 15 days of cultivation the endothelial cell layer was maintained only in corneal buttons and split corneal buttons. Alizarin red S stained areas and the existence of polymorphisms like rosette figures and reformation figures were significantly less frequent in split corneal buttons than in corneal buttons. Loss of endothelial cells was significantly greater in corneal buttons [575 ± 25/250 cells/mm2 (median ± 25%/75%-quantile); 14.8%] than in split corneal buttons [417 ± 138/179 cells/mm2 (median ± 25%/75%-quantile); 10.2%]. The new preparation method of split corneal buttons allows the cultivation of porcine corneas for 2 weeks with cell death rates comparable to those of the corresponding human tissue in cornea banks without the need to add de-swelling additives to the media. This is therefore a simple and highly reliable method model to be applied in intervention studies on corneal endothelial cells in their natural compound.  相似文献

The occurrence of dipterous larvae in the axillary buds (buttons) of Brussels sprouts was investigated at Wellesbourne in 1963–66. The most severe infestations occurred on early crops harvested in August, in which up to 10% of the buttons were damaged by cabbage root fly larvae. Most of the damaged buttons were on the lower part of the stem and were present on only a small proportion of the plants. Laboratory and field tests of insecticides showed that trichlorphon gave up to 88 % control. The principles involved in an insecticidal control method are discussed.  相似文献

The surface receptors in Branchiobdella pentodonta consist of “sense buttons” prevalent on the prostomium, isolated sense cells all along the body of the animal, and free nerve endings. The “sense buttons” are uni- and multiciliated neurosensitive elements and supporting cells together with mucus glandular processes and muscle fibers. In the neurosensitive elements the cilia are always surrounded by cytoplasmic extroversion. The cytoplasm of the apical zone has abundant small dense granules, mitochondria, bands of tonofilaments, and microtubules. The cilium of uniciliated elements originates from three short roots. The highly vacuolated support cells surround the neurosensitive elements, separating them from each other. The “sense buttons” appear to be mechanoreceptors and chemoreceptors, and the isolated sense cells tactile mechanoreceptors, as are the free nerve endings. The surface receptors are compared with those of other Oligochaeta and Hirudinea.  相似文献

The connection of reaction time (RT) with spatial-temporal motor parameters was studied in humans. Duration of the motor act was set by experimenter. In response to the signal the tested person pressed one or two buttons according to instruction. The interval between these pressings corresponded to the time of performing the movement. It is shown, that RT significantly depends on the regime of work, duration of movement, and distance between buttons: with greater distances such dependence becomes significant. It is suggested that dependence of RT upon various motor act parameters is determined by differences in the levels of brain structures activation and in spatial-temporal organization of the movement.  相似文献

The mouth apparatus in Branchiobdella pentodonta was studied by electron microscopy. The opening is situated dorsal to the adhesive disk of the anterior sucker and is surrounded by a ring of 16 papillae. The papillae have mono-layered epithelium, muscle fibers, glandular processes, and taste and olfactory organs like “sensitive buttons.” The oral cavity contains jaws with horny teeth and “sensitive buttons,” and is surrounded by a ring of circular muscle fibers that connect to the muscle fiber of the papillae. This apparatus shows some analogies to that of Hirudinea, such as the presence of sucker and jaws with horny teeth.  相似文献

The earthworm somatic muscle contains myoneural synapses forming clusters of “synaptic buttons” in which the proteins syntaxin 1, synaptotagmin 1, and alpha 1B subunit of the Ca2+ channel of the N-type were identified. It is supposed that “synaptic buttons” contain a limited number of active zones, which is due to their small size (1–2 μm) and the pattern of distribution of proteins of the exoendocytotic cycle. The postsynaptic membrane of cholinergic synapses contains nicotinic acetylcholine receptors able to bind alpha-bungarotoxin. The area of the position of receptors on postsynaptic membrane is strongly restricted to the synaptic contact region.  相似文献

Buttons made of vegetable ivory were once in great demand in industrial parts of the world. Vegetable ivory is the hard white seed endosperm from palms of the genusPhytelephas (Arecaceae). After World War II, ivory nuts were largely replaced by plastics. Recently the authors visited a factory on the coast of Ecuador that was founded in 1926 and still produces buttons of vegetable ivory on a large scale. Eighty employees produce about 5000 lb of buttons a month; these are exported to Japan, West Germany, and Italy. The production is described step by step and the future of vegetable ivory is discussed briefly.  相似文献

BackgroundWe have been developing the Self-Propelling Capsule Endoscope (SPCE) that allows for controllability from outside of the body and real-time observation. What kind of capsule endoscope (CE) is suitable for a controllable SPCE is unclear and a very critical point for clinical application. We compared observing ability of three kinds of SPCEs with different viewing angles and frame rates.MethodsEleven buttons were sewed in an excised porcine stomach. Four examiners controlled the SPCE using PillCamSB2, -ESO2, and -COLON2 (Given Imaging Ltd., Israel), for 10 minutes each with the aim of detecting as many buttons and examining them as closely as possible. The ability to find lesions was assessed based on the number of detected buttons. The SPCE-performance score (SPS) was used to evaluate the ability to examine the lesions in detail.ResultsThe SPCE-ESO2, -COLON2, and -SB2 detected 11 [interquartile range (IQR): 0], 10.5 (IQR, 0.5), and 8 (IQR, 1.0) buttons, respectively. The SPCE-ESO2 and -COLON2 had a significantly better ability to detect lesions than the -SB2 (p < 0.05). The SPCE-ESO2, -COLON2, and -SB2 had significantly different SPS values of 22 (IQR, 0), 16.5 (IQR, 1.5), and 14 (IQR, 1.0), respectively (p < 0.05 for all comparisons; SPCE-SB2 vs. -ESO2, -SB2 vs. -COLON2, and -ESO2 vs. -COLON2).ConclusionsPillCamESO2 is most suitable in different three CEs for SPCE for examining lesions in detail of the stomach.  相似文献

Abstract

The identity, origin, use and relationship of Peyote or Peyote buttons and mescal, mescal buttons, mescalbeans or mescaline continue to be confused. This paper examines the history of the confusion and uses ethnohistorical data to clarify the situation. Although Peyote, Lophophora williamsii and mescalbean, Sophora secundiflora, share the same general growth area, mostly in Mexico, the Spanish and Mexican reports on Peyote use are ancient and numerous, while nothing has been written about the use of mescalbeans south of the border. The use of the term mescalbean to refer to the red seed of Sophora secundiflora did not appear in print until 1914. A recent study shows that the greatest use of mescalbeans has been as beads. The paper concludes that theorists have inflated the importance of the relationship between mescalbeans and Peyote.  相似文献

We have studied cytoskeletal architectures of isolated mitotic apparatus from sea urchin eggs using quick-freeze, deep-etch electron microscopy. This method revealed the existence of an extensive three- dimensional network of straight and branching crossbridges between spindle microtubules. The surface of the spindle microtubules was almost entirely covered with hexagonally packed, small, round button- like structures which were very uniform in shape and size (approximately 8 nm in diameter), and these microtubule buttons frequently provided bases for crossbridges between adjacent microtubules. These structures were removed from the surface of microtubules by high salt (0.6 M NaCl) extraction. Microtubule- associated proteins (MAPs) and microtubules isolated from mitotic spindles which were mainly composed of a large amount of 75-kD protein and some high molecular mass (250 kD, 245 kD) proteins were polymerized in vitro and examined by quick-freeze, deep-etch electron microscopy. The surfaces of microtubules were entirely covered with the same hexagonally packed round buttons, the arrangement of which is intimately related to that of tubulin dimers. Short crossbridges and some longer crossbridges were also observed. High salt treatment (0.6 M NaCl) extracted both 75-kD protein and high molecular weight proteins and removed microtubule buttons and most of crossbridges from the surface of microtubules. Considering the relatively high amount of 75- kD protein among MAPs isolated from mitotic spindles, it is concluded that these microtubule buttons probably consist of 75-kD MAP and that some of the crossbridges in vivo could belong to MAPs. Another kind of granule, larger in size (11-26 nm in diameter), was also on occasion associated with the surface of microtubules of mitotic spindles. A fine sidearm sometimes connected the larger granule to adjacent microtubules. Localization of cytoplasmic dynein ATPase in the mitotic spindle was investigated by electron microscopic immunocytochemistry with a monoclonal antibody (D57) against sea urchin sperm flagellar 21S dynein and colloidal gold-labeled second antibody. Immunogold particles were closely associated with spindle microtubules. 76% of these were within 50 nm and 55% were within 20 nm from the surface of the microtubules. These gold particles were sporadically found on both polar and kinetochore microtubules of half-spindles at both metaphase and anaphase. They localized also on the microtubules between sister chromatids in late anaphase. These data indicate that cytoplasmic dynein is attached to the microtubules in sea urchin mitotic spindles.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 400 WORDS)  相似文献

The belly button is one of the habitats closest to us, and yet it remains relatively unexplored. We analyzed bacteria and arachaea from the belly buttons of humans from two different populations sampled within a nation-wide citizen science project. We examined bacterial and archaeal phylotypes present and their diversity using multiplex pyrosequencing of 16S rDNA libraries. We then tested the oligarchy hypothesis borrowed from tropical macroecology, namely that the frequency of phylotypes in one sample of humans predicts its frequency in another independent sample. We also tested the predictions that frequent phylotypes (the oligarchs) tend to be common when present, and tend to be more phylogenetically clustered than rare phylotypes. Once rarefied to four hundred reads per sample, bacterial communities from belly buttons proved to be at least as diverse as communities known from other skin studies (on average 67 bacterial phylotypes per belly button). However, the belly button communities were strongly dominated by a few taxa: only 6 phylotypes occurred on >80% humans. While these frequent bacterial phylotypes (the archaea were all rare) are a tiny part of the total diversity of bacteria in human navels (<0.3% of phylotypes), they constitute a major portion of individual reads (∼1/3), and are predictable among independent samples of humans, in terms of both the occurrence and evolutionary relatedness (more closely related than randomly drawn equal sets of phylotypes). Thus, the hypothesis that “oligarchs” dominate diverse assemblages appears to be supported by human-associated bacteria. Although it remains difficult to predict which species of bacteria might be found on a particular human, predicting which species are most frequent (or rare) seems more straightforward, at least for those species living in belly buttons.  相似文献

The laminin composition (LMalpha1-alpha5, beta1-beta3, gamma1 and gamma2 chains) of normal corneas and corneal buttons from keratoconus, bullous keratopathy (BKP), Fuchs' dystrophy + BKP, Fuchs' dystrophy without BKP and scar after deep lamellar keratoplasty (DLKP) was investigated with immunohistochemistry. The epithelial basement membranes (BMs) of both normal and diseased corneas contained LMalpha3, alpha5, beta1, beta3, gamma1 and gamma2 chains. The epithelial BM morphology was altered in the different diseases. Scarring was associated with irregular BM and ectopic stromal localization of different laminin chains. The Descemet's membrane (DM) contained LMalpha5, beta1 and gamma1 chains in all cases and additionally LMbeta3 and gamma2 chains in the majority of keratoconus corneas. The interface in the DLKP cornea had patches of LMalpha3, alpha4, alpha5, beta1 and beta2 chains, and an extra BM-like structure under the Bowman's membrane. These results suggest that laminin chains participate in the process of corneal scarring and in the pathogenesis of some corneal diseases. The novel finding of LMalpha3, beta3 and gamma2 in the DM of keratoconus buttons indicates that this membrane is also involved in the disease and that some cases of keratoconus may have a congenital origin, without normal downregulation of the LMbeta3 chain.  相似文献

Our purpose was to elucidate the pathways of apoptosis of corneas with Fuchs' dystrophy and pseudophakic bullous keratopathy. Sixteen corneal buttons (14 patients, median age 73 years) with Fuchs' dystrophy, 13 with pseudophakic bullous keratopathy (PBK) (13 patients, median age 69 years) and 8 buttons (8 patients, median age 59 years) from enucleated eyes with chorioideal melanoma (controls) were analysed histologically. Immunohistochemical analysis was performed to investigate the expression of p21, p27, p63, survivin, CD95, cathepsin, bax, bcl-2 and Ki67. Positive immunohistochemical reactions were detected in epithelial cells of the corneas, but keratocytes and endothelial cells were not positive in any of the groups or stainings. The number of p27 and survivin positive epithelial cells was significantly lower (p=0.048 and 0.041) and the number of cathepsin positive epithelial cells was significantly higher (p=0.004) in Fuchs' dystrophy corneas compared to controls. In pseudophakic bullous keratopathy, p21 and p27 positive epithelial cells were present in a significantly lower (p=0.02 and 0.005) number than in controls. We conclude that genetically programmed cell death is related to the p27, cathepsin and survivin pathways in Fuchs' dystrophy and to the p21 and p27 pathways in pseudophakic bullous keratopathy.  相似文献

Thirteen ivory objects found associated to two Gravettian burials in the Barma Grande (burial II and III) are housed at present in the Balzi Rossi Museum. They are represented by nine claviform pendants and by four buttons formerly defined as “double-olive pendants”. Their decoration is composed of sets of grooves. The micromorphology of their surface will be described in this paper and some technological implications will be discussed.  相似文献

During a five-and-one-half-year period, cell buttons were prepared from 393 (29%) of 1,375 fine needle aspirates. Of these, 237 were diagnostically helpful and confirmatory in conjunction with the smears. In 103 (7% of all cases), the tissue fragments in the cell button allowed a definite diagnosis or classification of the tumor that otherwise would not have been possible. The architecture that is often preserved in these minibiopsies is identical to that seen in larger tissue samples. The specimens lend themselves well to special histochemical and electron microscopic studies. Wider use of this established and simple procedure is encouraged.  相似文献
