A. density- and frequency-dependent model for the evolution and maintenance of pseudogamous females is developed and analyzed. Ecological as well as evolutionary aspects of pseudogamy are discussed. Criteria are described for the stable coexistence of sexual females and pseudogamous females under natural conditions. The conditions for invasion of a normal bisexual population by pseudogamous females are less stringent than the conditions for stable coexistence. Hence, we expect that some populations will be characterized by unstable sex ratios over time (with the resulting local extinction due to lack of males) while other populations will be characterized by stable sex ratios over time. If high population sex ratios (i.e., many females to few males) are to be stable, the net population growth rate must be large, and there can be no successful male preference for sexual females.  相似文献

The variability of marine diatom Si:C and Si:N composition ratios was examined to assess their utility as ecological conversion factors. Twenty-seven diatom species grown under an 18:6 h LD cycle and sampled at the end of the light period gave mean ratios, by atoms, of 0.13 ± 0.04 and 1.12 ± 0.33 for Si:C and Si:N ratios, respectively (95% C.I. reported). The mean ratios for 18 species grown under continuous illumination were 0.12 ± 0.03 for Si:C and 0.95 ± 0.23 for Si:N. The mean ratios of the clones grown under constant light were not statistically different from those calculated for the same species grown under an 18:6 h LD photoperiod. The overall mean Si:C and Si:N ratios for the 18:6 h LD and continuous light experiments taken together, weighted by the number of species in each experiment, are 0.13 and 1.05, respectively. The average ratios for the nine nanoplankton species (<20 μm) examined were 0.09 ± 0.03 for Si:C and 0.80 ± 0.35 for Si:N. The eighteen netplankton species (>20 μm) had higher mean ratios, Si:C = 0.15 ± 0.04 and Si:N = 1.20 ± 0.37. Time course sampling throughout a 24 h period revealed twofold variations in both ratios for individual species grown on a 14:10 h LD cycle. Changes in irradiance can also produce factor of two variations, both ratios being higher under low light. Comparisons of these data with those from the literature regarding the effects of temperature and nutrient limitation on diatom elemental composition suggest that use of these ratios to convert field estimates of biogenic silica into nitrogen or carbon units, or to estimate silica production from 14C data, should yield results accurate to within a factor of three under most circumstances.  相似文献

With a method based on probability of phenotypic ratios being produced by crosses involving two pairs of interacting genes, data from genetic studies of Impatiens Sultana Hook. f. (Balsaminaceae) were analysed. Nine genes postulated to control floral color are: P, purple; I and W, white; R, red; O, orange; F, fuchsia; D, red; E, red; S, salmon. The thirty-two possible genic crosses involving two pairs of nonlinked genes were simulated. The anticipated progeny of each cross was analyzed according to each of the seven basic types of epistatic action. A key was devised to facilitate the recognition of genic action since most phenotypic progeny ratios are produced exclusively either by phenotypically similar parents or phenotypically dissimilar parents. Basalar and tibial extensor muscle fibers of Achalarus lyciades were examined with light and electron microscopes. Basalar muscle fibers are 100–150 µ in diameter. T-system membranes and sarcoplasmic reticulum make triadic contacts midway between Z lines and the middle of each sarcomere. The sarcoplasmic reticulum is characterized by a transverse element situated among myofilaments halfway between Z lines in every sarcomere. The morphology of Z lines, hexagonal packing of thin and thick myofilaments, and thin/thick myofilament ratios are similar to those of fast-acting insect muscles. Tibial extensor muscle fibers are 50–100 µ in diameter. Except for a lack of the transverse element, the T system and sarcoplasmic reticulum are similar to those of basalar muscle. Wavy Z lines, lack of a hexagonal packing of myofilaments, and larger thin/thick myofilament ratios are similar to those of other postural muscles of insects. The morphology of basalar and tibial extensor muscle is compared to that of other insect muscle with known functions, and reference is made to the possible contribution of the transverse element of sarcoplasmic reticulum in basalar flight muscle to speed and synchrony in this muscle.  相似文献

选用全国人口普查时登报的 1 989年 1月 1日至 1 2月 31日期间中国育龄妇女 ( 1 5— 49岁 )的生产记录 ,用 Weinberg差别法进行双生子卵性分类 ,分析了中国总体、DZ和 MZ双生子出生率与母亲年龄之间的关系以及双生子的出生性别比。结果表明 ,中国总体、 DZ和 MZ双生子的出生率分别为 0 .787± 0 .0 0 2 % ,0 .573± 0 .0 0 2 %和 0 .2 1 4± 0 .0 0 1 % ,DZ双生子出生率在 33岁前随母亲年龄增高单调上升 ,随后下降 ,但在 46岁后又随龄上升 ,MZ双生子出生率在 34岁前相对恒定 ,随后随龄上升。中国双生子出生性别比显著性低于同期群体出生性别比 ,1 5— 1 9岁和 45— 49岁年龄组出生的双生子性别比低于其它年龄组出生的双生子性别比 ,1 5— 1 9岁和 45— 49岁年龄组出生的双生子性别比较低可能是较低的 MZ双生子出生性别比造成的。  相似文献

1. It has previously been shown by the author and many others that growth, in animals and plants, is an autocatalysed process. In animals it is usual to find that growth occurs in several superimposed autocatalytic cycles. In many cases, in plants and animals, especially if the cycle is one which occupies a large proportion of the growing period, it is found that the velocity-constant of the autocatalysed monomolecular formula falls off as growth proceeds, at first rapidly and later more slowly. 2. It has previously been shown by the author that the fall of the velocity-constant of growth, in the white mouse, is directly proportional to the fall of the nucleo-cytoplasmic ratio, determined by the chemical method of Le Breton and Schaeffer. If we assume this relationship to be generally applicable to the growth of animals and plants, then the following additional conclusions may be deduced, without calling in the aid of any other assumption:— 3. The increase of cytoplasm in any given cycle of growth is proportional to the concurrent increase of nuclear material. 4. The growth of cytoplasm takes place in accordance with a monomolecular formula in which the velocity-constant varies directly as the mass of the nucleus. If we superadd to these facts and deductions the hypothesis that each growth-cycle represents the growth of a separate group of cells within the animal, then the additional conclusions follow:— 5. That the cells which participate in the growth composing any cycle have initially lower nucleo-cytoplasmic ratios than the cells which participated in the preceding cycles. 6. That cells of large nucleo-cytoplasmic ratios in a multicellular animal inhibit the growth of cells which possess smaller ratios. 7. These conclusions collectively imply that the nucleus plays a predominant role in determining the development of the cell in which it resides.  相似文献

A method is described for fitting a 'fraction labelled mitoses'curve to a set of data points and for estimating the values of the best fitting parameters of the cell cycle. Estimates of the SE of the parameters are obtained. The method depends on the fact that when gamma distributions are used to describe the durations of the phases of the cell cycle, the Laplace transform of a FLM curve can be described by simple analytic functions enabling a least squares fit to be made to a set of Laplace transforms of the experimental data. A statistical examination of the available data on the ratio of antibody to antigen in specific precipitates made at or near the optimum shows a definite correlation between the ratio and the molecular weight of antigen (regression coefficient = –0.529 (±0.014)). The authors'' assumption that at this point the antigen molecules are just about covered by a layer of antibody behaving as contiguous spherical ("Svedberg") units of weight 35,200 leads to predicted ratios that in general agree well with those found, though individual experimental determinations may deviate considerably.  相似文献

Geographically separated populations of the intertidal copepod Tigriopus californicus are sharply differentiated at several enzyme-encoding gene loci. Two studies were performed to investigate the extent to which the gene pools of local populations are organized into harmoniously interacting (or “coadapted”) gene complexes. In the first, the effects of interpopulation hybridization on development time were assessed. Results showed that while F1 hybrids did not differ from parental lines, mean F2 developmental times were as much as 50% longer. The second study used two unlinked enzyme polymorphisms as genetic markers to determine the genotypic specificity of F2 hybrid breakdown. For two sets of parental populations, the relative viabilities of the different two-locus genotypes were determined from segregation ratios among the F2 progeny. Sharp deviations from Mendelian ratios were observed; in the extreme, a block of genes marked by the MeF allozyme from the LJ (La Jolla) population was found to be nearly lethal when homozygous in the F2 of LJ × AB (Los Angeles) crosses. This same block of genes had a tenfold higher viability in crosses between LJ and SC (Santa Cruz). In the AB × LJ crosses, the two marker loci had independent (multiplicative) effects on viability. In the SC × LJ crosses, deviations from the multiplicative model were observed; the data indicate that parental homozygous genotypes have higher viability than predicted by independence, while nonparental homozygotes have lower than predicted viability. These results suggest that substantial integration of the genome has occurred within natural T. californicus populations.  相似文献

通过流式细胞仪测量了兴国红鲤(Cyprinus carpio Var. Singuonensis)、奥利亚罗非鱼(Sarotherodon aurea)、 鳙(Aristichthys nobilis R.)和团头鲂(Megalobrama amblycephala Yin.)红细胞的DNA含量,四种鱼与鸡红细胞DNA含量的比值分别为1·65、0.96、0.91、1·15,以鸡红细胞DNA含量2.3pg/N计算,四种鱼二倍体体细胞的 DNA含量分别为3.80 pg/N, 2. 22pg/N、2. 08pg/N、 2. 66pg/N。另外,四种鱼外周血红细胞分别有26%、 26%、 23%、 24%的细胞处于 DNA合成期(S),DNA合成后期(G2)和分裂期(M),这表明这四种鱼类的外周血红细胞并非失去分裂能力的特化细胞群,它们表现了较强的细胞周期现象。这有可能是这几种硬骨鱼类外周血仍具有造血功能的缘故。  相似文献

Abstract— Data scored for cladistic analyses may be quantitative or qualitative, continuous or discrete, and show overlapping or non-overlapping values between taxa. Quantitative and qualitative are modes of expression of data, while continuous or discrete refer to properties of the set of numbers that express the data; both these pairs of terms have been confused with overlapping and non-overlapping. The degree of overlap of values between taxa is often used to filter characters in cladistic analyses: if a minimum amount of overlap is exceeded, or a minimum amount of disjunction not reached, characters are rejected as "not cladistic". However, this rests on a confusion between features of taxa and features of individual organisms (attributes). Cladistic characters are features of taxa, and comprise frequency distributions of attribute values over individuals of a taxon. Cladistic characters logically cannot overlap, although taxa may have overlapping attribute values. Thus, a priori rejection of characters that have overlapping attribute values is non-sensical. Such data may still be rejected from consideration for cladistic analysis if it could be demonstrated that they contain little recoverable phylogenetic signal. Few published analyses have empirically tested this. An analysis of overlapping morphometric data from three series of Banksia suggests that, at least in these cases, they map phylogeny almost as accurately as more conventional, qualitative morphological data. While more such tests are required, morphometric data should not be rejected a priori from cladistic analyses.  相似文献

1. It has been found that the ratios of the total concentrations of Ca, Mg, K, Zn, inside and outside of gelatin particles do not agree with the ratios calculated according to Donnan''s theory from the hydrogen ion activity ratios. 2. E.M.F. measurements of Zn and Cl electrode potentials in such a system show, however, that the ion activity ratios are correct, so that the discrepancy must be due to a decrease in the ion concentration by the formation of complex ions with the protein. 3. This has been confirmed in the case of Zn by Zn potential measurements in ZnCl2 solutions containing gelatin. It has been found that in 10 per cent gelatin containing 0.01 M ZnCl2 about 60 per cent of the Zn++ is combined with the gelatin. 4. If the activity ratios are correctly expressed by Donnan''s equation, then the amount of any ion combined with a protein can be determined without E.M.F. measurements by determining its distribution in a proper system. If the activity ratio of the hydrogen ion and the activity of the other ion in the aqueous solution are known, then the activity and hence the concentration of the ion in the protein solution can be calculated. The difference between this and the total molar concentration of the ion in the protein represents the amount combined with the protein. 5. It has been shown that in the case of Zn the values obtained in this way agree quite closely with those determined by direct E.M.F. measurements. 6. The combination with Zn is rapidly and completely reversible and hence is probably not a surface effect. 7. Since the protein combines more with Zn than with Cl, the addition of ZnCl2 to isoelectric gelatin should give rise to an unequal ion distribution and hence to an increase in swelling, osmotic pressure, and viscosity. 应用稳定性同位素技术(13C和15N)研究了太湖贡湖湾食物网特征, 结果显示由于食物来源变化多样性影响, 导致贡湖的食物网结构和营养级关系变化较为复杂, 贡湖主要生物类群13C、15N值表现出较大的种间差异。消费者13C值从摇蚊幼虫的-32.3到锯齿米虾的-22.1, 其值大小与营养级的关系没有规律性。消费者平均15N值从褶纹冠蚌的10.3到位于顶端间下鳙的19.0, 随营养级位置而升高。群落中所有种类的15N、13C值之间没有相关性(r=0.1835, P0.05), 表明该食物网是非线性食物网。研究结果验证了杂食性生物有机体普遍存在于富营养化的贡湖水域生态系统中, 且13C结果表明, 浮游植物、固着藻类以及沉水植物为贡湖食物网中大多数生物有机体的主要碳源。贡湖食物链长度为4.44营养级。  相似文献

CITRATE AS THE PRECURSOR OF THE ACETYL MOIETY OF ACETYLCHOLINE   总被引:13,自引:12,他引:1  
Abstract— Rat brain cortex slices were incubated with glucose labeled with either 3H or 14C in the 6-position. The 3H/14C ratios and the incorporation of radioactivity into lactate, citrate, malate and acetylcholine were determined. While the 3H/14C ratio of lactate was close to that of glucose, the ratios in the acetyl moiety of acetylcholine and the acetyl (C-4,5) portion of citrate decreased in a similar proportion. This was interpreted as indirect evidence for the participation of citrate as a precursor to the acetyl moiety of acetylcholine. Two inhibitors of the citrate cleavage pathway: n -butylmalonate, an inhibitor of citrate transport and (-)-hydroxycitrate, an inhibitor of ATP-citrate lyase were studied for their effect on acetylcholine synthesis. N -butylmalonate (10 mM) and (-)-hydroxycitrate (7.5 mM) led to a decrease in the per cent of 14C recovered as acetylcholine. In each instance the 3H/14C ratio in acetylcholine was higher in the presence of inhibitor while the corresponding ratios in lactate and citrate (C-4.5) remained unchanged. From the results, it is suggested that citrate is involved in the transport mechanism of acetyl units from its site of synthesis in mitochondria to the site of acetylcholine synthesis in the cytosol.  相似文献

Coordinated swimming movements in Yungia are not dependent upon the presence of the brain. The neuromuscular mechanism necessary for spontaneous movement and swimming is complete in the body of the animal apart from the brain. Normally this mechanism is set in motion by sensory stimulation arriving by way of the brain. The latter is a region of low threshold and acts as an amplifier by sending the impulses into a great number of channels. When the head is cut off these connections with the sensorium are broken, consequently peripheral stimulation does not have its usual effect. If, however, the motor nerves are stimulated directly as by mechanical stimulation of the median anterior region, then swimming movements result. A unique feature of sex in Crassostrea oysters is the coexistence of protandric sex change, dioecy, and hermaphroditism. To determine whether such a system is genetically controlled, we analyzed sex ratios in 86 pair-mated families of the Pacific oyster, Crassostrea gigas Thunberg. The overall female ratios of one-, two-, and three-year-old oysters were 37%, 55%, and 75%, respectively, suggesting that a significant proportion of oysters matured first as males and changed to females in later years. Detailed analysis of sex ratios in factorial and nested crosses revealed significant paternal effects, which corresponded to two types of sires. No major maternal effects on sex were observed. Major genetic control of sex was further indicated by the distribution of family sex ratios in two to four apparently discreet groups. These and other data from the literature are compatible with a single-locus model of primary sex determination with a dominant male allele (M) and a protandric female allele (F), so that MF are true males and FF are protandric females that are capable of sex change. The rate of sex change of FF individuals may be influenced by secondary genes and/or environmental factors. Strong maternal and weak paternal effects on sexual maturation or time of spawning were also suggested.  相似文献

1. Calculations from the Fick diffusion law are shown to predict that membrane equilibria should be established during the course of ultrafiltration. 2. It is shown that the chloride ion is more concentrated and the sodium ion less concentrated in the ultrafiltrate than in the plasma from which the ultrafiltrate was derived. 3. It has been found that by increasing the base bound by protein through a reduction in the bicarbonate content the difference between the plasma concentration and the ultrafiltrate concentration for the several ions studied increases. 4. Calculations from the Donnan equation as to the magnitude of the change in base bound by protein at differing hydrogen ion concentrations are in substantial agreement with the observed values, thus rendering it probable that the membrane equilibrium effect is responsible for the change in distribution ratios observed. 5. It is pointed out that the observed difference in the distribution ratio of cations from that of the chloride anion is probably to be explained by the influence of protein in lowering the activity coefficient of cations when on the alkaline side of the isoelectric point. 6. It is pointed out that account must be taken of these observations in any consideration of the rôle of ultrafiltration in the production of any secretion or body fluid.  相似文献
