This study investigated aerenchyma formation and function in adventitious roots of wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) when only a part of the root system was exposed to O2 deficiency. Two experimental systems were used: (1) plants in soil waterlogged at 200 mm below the surface; or (2) a nutrient solution system with only the apical region of a single root exposed to deoxygenated stagnant agar solution with the remainder of the root system in aerated nutrient solution. Porosity increased two‐ to three‐fold along the entire length of the adventitious roots that grew into the water‐saturated zone 200 mm below the soil surface, and also increased in roots that grew in the aerobic soil above the water‐saturated zone. Likewise, adventitious roots with only the tips growing into deoxygenated stagnant agar solution developed aerenchyma along the entire main axis. Measurements of radial O2 loss (ROL), taken using root‐sleeving O2 electrodes, showed this aerenchyma was functional in conducting O2. The ROL measured near tips of intact roots in deoxygenated stagnant agar solution, while the basal part of the root remained in aerated solution, was sustained when the atmosphere around the shoot was replaced by N2. This illustrates the importance of O2 diffusion into the basal regions of roots within an aerobic zone, and the subsequent longitudinal movement of O2 within the aerenchyma, to supply O2 to the tip growing in an O2 deficient zone.  相似文献

The possible involvement of ethylene in in vitrorooting of faba bean (Vicia faba L.) shootsregenerated on medium containing thidiazuron wasinvestigated. The effects of the ethylene precursor1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylic acid (ACC) and threeethylene inhibitors, silver nitrate (AgNO3),acetyl salicylic acid (ASA) and cobalt chloride(CoCl2) on root formation were tested in vitrousing TDZ-induced shoots of faba bean accession 760.ACC inhibited root formation. In contrast, ethyleneinhibitors promoted root formation, AgNO3 at theappropriate concentrations enhanced root emergence andincreased root number per shoot, root growth rate, androot length. Both CoCl2 and ASA at theappropriate concentrations increased rootingefficiency. These promotive effects may result from areduction in ethylene concentration or inhibition ofethylene action. The results offer a new approach toimprove the rooting efficiency of TDZ-induced shootsof faba bean and possibly of other plant species.  相似文献

The relationship between ethylene production, 1-aminocyclopropane-l-carboxylic acid (ACC) concentration and aerenchyma formation (ethylene-promoted cavitation of the cortex) was studied using nodal roots of maize (Zea mays L. cv. LG11) subjected to various O2 treatments. Ethylene evolution was 7–8 fold faster in roots grown at 3 kPa O2 than in those from aerated solution (21 kPa O2), and transferring roots from aerated solution to 3 kPa O2 enhanced ethylene synthesis within less than 2 h. Ethylene production and ACC accumulation were closely correlated in different zones of hypoxic roots, regardless of whether O2 was furnished to the roots through aerenchyma or external solution. Both ethylene production and ACC concentrations (fresh weight basis) were more than 10-fold greater in the distal 0–10 mm than in the fully expanded zone of roots at 3 kPa O2. Aerenchyma formation occurred in the apical 20 mm of these roots. Roots transferred from air to anoxia accumulated less than 0. 1 nmol ACC (mg protein)-1 for the first 1.75 h; no ethylene was produced in this time. The subsequent rise in ACC levels shows that ACC can reach high concentrations even in the absence of O2, presumably due to a de-repression of ACC synthase. The hypothesis was therefore tested that anoxia in the apical region of the root caused enhanced synthesis of ACC, which was transported to more mature regions (10–20 mm behind the apex), where ethylene could be produced and aerenchyma formation stimulated. Surprisingly, exposure of intact root tips to anoxia inhibited aerenchyma formation in the mature root axis. High osmotic pressures around the growing region or excision of apices had the same effect, demonstrating that a growing apex is required for high rates of aerenchyma formation in the adjacent tissue.  相似文献

Nine species from the tribe Triticeae – three crop, three pasture and three ‘wild’ wetland species – were evaluated for tolerance to growth in stagnant deoxygenated nutrient solution and also for traits that enhance longitudinal O2 movement within the roots. Critesion marinum (syn. Hordeum marinum) was the only species evaluated that had a strong barrier to radial O2 loss (ROL) in the basal regions of its adventitious roots. Barriers to ROL have previously been documented in roots of several wetland species, although not in any close relatives of dryland crop species. Moreover, the porosity in adventitious roots of C. marinum was relatively high: 14% and 25% in plants grown in aerated and stagnant solutions, respectively. The porosity of C. marinum roots in the aerated solution was 1·8–5·4‐fold greater, and in the stagnant solution 1·2–2·8‐fold greater, than in the eight other species when grown under the same conditions. These traits presumably contributed to C. marinum having a 1·4–3 times greater adventitious root length than the other species when grown in deoxygenated stagnant nutrient solution or in waterlogged soil. The length of the adventitious roots and ROL profiles of C. marinum grown in waterlogged soil were comparable to those of the extremely waterlogging‐tolerant species Echinochloa crus‐galli L. (P. Beauv.). The superior tolerance of C. marinum, as compared to Hordeum vulgare (the closest cultivated relative), was confirmed in pots of soil waterlogged for 21 d; H. vulgare suffered severe reductions in shoot and adventitious root dry mass (81% and 67%, respectively), whereas C. marinum shoot mass was only reduced by 38% and adventitious root mass was not affected.  相似文献

Ethylene is produced by cultured radish roots in amounts large enough to be physiologically important. When roots were grown in controlled atmospheres, applied ethylene was generally inhibitory to elongation, lateral root initiation, and cambial activity. 1% CO2 similarly affected roots not given ethylene. In contrast, elongation and lateral root production of ethylene-treated roots were stimulated by 1% CO2. The results suggest that the often-observed stimulation of root growth by CO2 is due to an interaction with endogenous ethylene.  相似文献

Ethylene production by primary roots of 72–h-old intact seedlings of Zea mays L. cv. LG11 was studied under ambient and sub-ambient oxygen partial pressures (pO2) using a gas flow-through system linked to a photoacoustic laser detector. Despite precautions to minimize physical perturbation to seedlings while setting-up, ethylene production in air was faster during the first 6h than later, in association with a small temporary swelling of the roots. When roots were switched from air (20–8kPa O2) to 3 or 5kPa O2 after 6h, ethylene production increased within 2—3 h. When, the roots were returned to air 16 h later, ethylene production decreased within 2—3 h. The presence of 10kPa CO2 did not interfere with the effect of 3kPa O2. Transferring roots from air to 12–5kPa did not change ethylene production, while a reduction to 1 kPa O2 induced a small increase. The extra ethylene formed in 3 and 5 kPa O2 was associated with plagiotropism, swelling, root hair production, and after 72 h, increased amounts of intercellular space (aerenchyma) in the root cortex. Root extension was also slowed down, but the pattern of response to oxygen shortage did not always match that of ethylene production. On return to air, subsequent growth patterns became normal within a few hours. In the complete absence of oxygen, no ethylene production was detected, even when anaerobic roots were returned to air after 16 h.  相似文献

Summary Ethylene inhibits hook opening in the bean hypocotyl and at high concentrations induces closure of the hook. Indoleacetic acid and 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid, whose inhibitory effect on hook opening resembles that of ethylene, stimulate ethylene production from the hook tissue, and this ethylene production is physiologically active in inhibiting hook opening. It is concluded that the inhibition of opening by auxin is due at least in a major part to auxin-induced ethylene production by the hook tissue.Carbon dioxide promotes hook opening, apparently by antagonizing the action of endogenous ethylene. The concentration of respiratory CO2 in the internal gas space of the hook tissue is high enough to play a role in the regulation of hook opening.Red light causes a decrease in ethylene production and an increase in CO2 evolution from the hook tissue. These effects are partially reversible by far-red light. It is concluded that both ethylene and CO2 serve as natural growth regulators which mediate the hypocotyl hook-opening response to light in bean seedlings.  相似文献

Background and aims

Roots have morphological plasticity to adapt to heterogeneous nutrient distribution in soil, but little is known about crop differences in root plasticity. The objective of this study was to evaluate root morphological strategies of four crop species in response to soil zones enriched with different nutrients.

Methods

Four crop species that are common in intercropping systems [maize (Zea mays L.), wheat (Triticum aestivum L.), faba bean (Vicia faba L.), and chickpea (Cicer arietinum L.)] and have contrasting root morphological traits were grown for 45 days under uniform or localized nitrogen and phosphorus supply.

Results

For each species tested, the nutrient supply patterns had no effect on shoot biomass and specific root length. However, localized supply of ammonium plus phosphorus induced maize and wheat root proliferation in the nutrient-rich zone. Localized supply of ammonium alone suppressed the whole root growth of chickpea and maize, whereas localized phosphorus plus ammonium reversed (maize and chickpea ) the negative effect of ammonium. The localized root proliferation of chickpea in a nutrient-rich zone did not increase the whole root length and root surface area. Faba bean had no significant response to localized nutrient supply.

Conclusions

The root morphological plasticity is influenced by nutrient-specific and species-specific responses, with the greater plasticity in graminaceous (eg. maize) than leguminous species (eg. faba bean and chickpea).  相似文献

The association of the level of ACC and the ethylene concentration in ripening apple fruit (Malus sylvestris Mill, var. Ben Davis) was studied. Preclimacteric apple contained small amounts of ACC and ethylene. With the onset of the climacteric and a concomitant decrease in flesh firmness, the level of ACC and ethylene concentration both increased markedly. During the postclimacteric period, ethylene concentration started to decline, but the level of ACC continued to increase. Ethylene production and loss of flesh firmness of fruits during ripening were greatly suppressed by treatments with low O2 (O2 1–3%, CO2 O%) or high CO2 (CO2 20–30%, O2 15–20%) at the preclimacteric stage. However, after 4 weeks an accumulation of ACC was observed in treated fruits when control fruit was at the postclimacteric stage. Treatment of fruit with either low O2 or high CO2 at the climacteric stage resulted in a decrease of ethylene production. However, the ACC level in fruit treated with low O2 was much higher than both control and high CO2 treated fruit; it appears that low O2 inhibits only the conversion of ACC to ethylene, resulting in an accumulation of ACC. Since CO2 inhibits ethylene production but does not result in an accumulation of ACC, it appears that high CO2 inhibits both the conversion of ACC to ethylene and the formation of ACC.  相似文献

Cicer arietinum L. (chickpea) and Vicia faba L. (faba bean, broad bean or horse bean) were found in late 10th millennium b.p. levels at Tell el-Kerkh, in north-west Syria. They are the earliest well preserved archaeobotanical finds of these two species. Over a hundred C. arietinum specimens were recovered which showed a wide morphological diversity varying from C. arietinum ssp. reticulatum to the more rounded shape as seen in cultivated varieties. For Vicia faba, 29 complete and 119 half seeds, as well as many fragments were recovered. Tell el-Kerkh is one of the few early PPNB Near Eastern sites situated in the Mediterranean zone which could have been the habitat of the unknown wild progenitor of the faba bean. The wild progenitor of chickpea, C. a. reticulatum, is found in a limited area of southeast Turkey, at a considerable distance from Tell el-Kerkh. These finds suggest that the use and domestication of these pulses is perhaps earlier than was previously supposed.  相似文献

Heterotrimeric G proteins function as key players in hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) production in plant cells, but whether G proteins mediate ethylene‐induced H2O2 production and stomatal closure are not clear. Here, evidences are provided to show the Gα subunit GPA1 as a missing link between ethylene and H2O2 in guard cell ethylene signalling. In wild‐type leaves, ethylene‐triggered H2O2 synthesis and stomatal closure were dependent on activation of Gα. GPA1 mutants showed the defect of ethylene‐induced H2O2 production and stomatal closure, whereas wGα and cGα overexpression lines showed faster stomatal closure and H2O2 production in response to ethylene. Ethylene‐triggered H2O2 generation and stomatal closure were impaired in RAN1, ETR1, ERS1 and EIN4 mutants but not impaired in ETR2 and ERS2 mutants. Gα activator and H2O2 rescued the defect of RAN1 and EIN4 mutants or etr1‐3 in ethylene‐induced H2O2 production and stomatal closure, but only rescued the defect of ERS1 mutants or etr1‐1 and etr1‐9 in ethylene‐induced H2O2 production. Stomata of CTR1 mutants showed constitutive H2O2 production and stomatal closure, but which could be abolished by Gα inhibitor. Stomata of EIN2, EIN3 and ARR2 mutants did not close in responses to ethylene, Gα activator or H2O2, but do generate H2O2 following challenge of ethylene or Gα activator. The data indicate that Gα mediates ethylene‐induced stomatal closure via H2O2 production, and acts downstream of RAN1, ETR1, ERS1, EIN4 and CTR1 and upstream of EIN2, EIN3 and ARR2. The data also show that ETR1 and ERS1 mediate both ethylene and H2O2 signalling in guard cells.  相似文献

Internal transport of gases is crucial for vascular plants inhabiting aquatic, wetland or flood‐prone environments. Diffusivity of gases in water is approximately 10 000 times slower than in air; thus direct exchange of gases between submerged tissues and the environment is strongly impeded. Aerenchyma provides a low‐resistance internal pathway for gas transport between shoot and root extremities. By this pathway, O2 is supplied to the roots and rhizosphere, while CO2, ethylene, and methane move from the soil to the shoots and atmosphere. Diffusion is the mechanism by which gases move within roots of all plant species, but significant pressurized through‐flow occurs in stems and rhizomes of several emergent and floating‐leaved wetland plants. Through‐flows can raise O2 concentrations in the rhizomes close to ambient levels. In general, rates of flow are determined by plant characteristics such as capacity to generate positive pressures in shoot tissues, and resistance to flow in the aerenchyma, as well as environmental conditions affecting leaf‐to‐air gradients in humidity and temperature. O2 diffusion in roots is influenced by anatomical, morphological and physiological characteristics, and environmental conditions. Roots of many (but not all) wetland species contain large volumes of aerenchyma (e.g. root porosity can reach 55%), while a barrier impermeable to radial O2 loss (ROL) often occurs in basal zones. These traits act synergistically to enhance the amount of O2 diffusing to the root apex and enable the development of an aerobic rhizosphere around the root tip, which enhances root penetration into anaerobic substrates. The barrier to ROL in roots of some species is induced by growth in stagnant conditions, whereas it is constitutive in others. An inducible change in the resistance to O2 across the hypodermis/exodermis is hypothesized to be of adaptive significance to plants inhabiting transiently waterlogged soils. Knowledge on the anatomical basis of the barrier to ROL in various species is scant. Nevertheless, it has been suggested that the barrier may also impede influx of: (i) soil‐derived gases, such as CO2, methane, and ethylene; (ii) potentially toxic substances (e.g. reduced metal ions) often present in waterlogged soils; and (iii) nutrients and water. Lateral roots, that remain permeable to O2, may be the main surface for exchange of substances between the roots and rhizosphere in wetland species. Further work is required to determine whether diversity in structure and function in roots of wetland species can be related to various niche habitats.  相似文献

Orobanche foetida Poir. is a parasitic plant widely distributed in the Western Mediterranean area. It typically parasitizes wild plants but has recently been described as an agricultural problem in legume crops in Tunisia. The pattern of genetic variation within and among O. foetida populations growing on chickpea and faba bean was analyzed by RAPD markers. The UPGMA cluster analysis based on Dice distance matrix showed a clear differentiation among O. foetida samples collected on chickpea and those on faba bean, suggesting a host-differentiation process. Although an AMOVA analysis revealed substantial internal variation among individuals within O. foetida populations (69.8%), there was a significant divergence between parasites on the two hosts considered (30.2%). Moreover, germination of O. foetida seeds collected on chickpea and faba bean in the presence of both host roots was studied. Germination percentages of O. foetida seeds varied depending on the host used both for collecting the seeds and evaluating the trait. According to these results, possible explanations for the origin of this new weedy parasite and the host differentiation process are discussed.  相似文献

Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and nitric oxide (NO) generated by salicylic acid (SA) are considered to be functional links of cross‐tolerance to various stressors. SA‐stimulated pre‐adaptation state was beneficial in the acclimation to subsequent salt stress in tomato (Solanum lycopersicum cv. Rio Fuego). At the whole‐plant level, SA‐induced massive H2O2 accumulation only at high concentrations (10?3–10?2M), which later caused the death of plants. The excess accumulation of H2O2 as compared with plants exposed to 100 mM NaCl was not associated with salt stress response after SA pre‐treatments. In the root tips, 10?3–10?2M SA triggered the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and NO with a concomitant decline in the cell viability. Sublethal concentrations of SA, however, decreased the effect of salt stress on ROS and NO production in the root apex. The attenuation of oxidative stress because of high salinity occurred not only in pre‐adapted plants but also at cell level. When protoplasts prepared from control leaves were exposed to SA in the presence of 100 mM NaCl, the production of NO and ROS was much lower and the viability of the cells was higher than in salt‐treated samples. This suggests that, the cross‐talk of signalling pathways induced by SA and high salinity may occur at the level of ROS and NO production. Abscisic acid (ABA), polyamines and 1‐aminocyclopropane‐1‐carboxylic acid, the compounds accumulating in pre‐treated plants, enhanced the diphenylene iodonium‐sensitive ROS and NO levels, but, in contrast to others, ABA and putrescine preserved the viability of protoplasts.  相似文献

Mediation of a plant response to malformin by ethylene   总被引:6,自引:6,他引:0       下载免费PDF全文
Malformin and ethylene stimulate abscission of the primary leaves of Phaseolus aureus Roxb. in the dark, and abscission stimulation by both compounds is inhibited by indeleacetic acid and CO2. Ethylene production by malformin-treated buds is stimulated within 4 hours. and up to 8 days, after treatment. Malformin-induced growth disturbances in P. vulgaris L. and abscission in P. aureus are considered mediated by ethylene. Although root curvatures of Zea mays L. are induced by both malformin and ethylene, and malformin is inhibited by CO2, ethylene production is not stimulated by malformin. A role of ethylene in root curvatures induced by malformin is neither proposed nor disproved.  相似文献

Ethylene binding to seedling tissue of Vicia faba, Phaseolus vulgaris, Glycine max, and Triticum aestivum was demonstrated by determining transit time required for ethylene to move through a glass tube filled with seedling tissue. Transit time for ethylene was greater than that for methane indicating that these tissues had an affinity for ethylene. However, the following observations suggest that the binding was not physiological. Inhibitors of ethylene action such as Ag+ ions and CO2 did not decrease binding. Mushrooms which have no known sites of ethylene action also demonstrated ethylene binding. The binding of acetylene, propylene, ethylene, propane, and ethane more closely followed their solubility in water than any known physiological activity.  相似文献

The effect of elevated [CO2] on the productivity of spring wheat, winter wheat and faba bean was studied in experiments in climatized crop enclosures in the Wageningen Rhizolab in 1991–93. Simulation models for crop growth were used to explore possible causes for the observed differences in the CO2 response. Measurements of the canopy gas exchange (CO2 and water vapour) were made continuously from emergence until harvest. At an external [CO2] of 700 μmol mol?1 Maximum Canopy CO2 Exchange Rate (CCERmax) at canopy closure was stimulated by 51% for spring wheat and by 71% for faba bean. At the end of the growing season, above ground biomass increase at 700 μmol mol?1 was 58% (faba bean), 35% (spring wheat) and 19% (winter wheat) and the harvest index did not change. For model exploration, weather data sets for the period 1975-88 and 1991–93 were used, assuming adequate water supply and [CO2] at 350 and 700 μmol mol?1. For spring wheat the simulated responses (35–50%) were at the upper end of the experimental results. In agreement with experiments, simulations showed smaller responses for winter wheat and larger responses for faba bean. Further model explorations showed that this differential effect in the CO2 response may not be primarily due to fundamental physiological differences between the crops, but may be at least partly due to differences in the daily air temperatures during comparable stages of growth of these crops. Simulations also showed that variations between years in CO2 response can be largely explained by differences in weather conditions (especially temperature) between growing seasons.  相似文献
