Flax seed containing up to 10% of moisture was disinfected with a proprietary dry fungicide containing tetramethylthiuram disulphide (Nomersan) at the rate of 12 oz./cwt. of seed, and stored for periods of up to 18 months, without its germination being impaired.
Experiments were made with samples of seed the moisture content of which, before treatment, varied within the range of 5-8-13-2% and which were kept in a commercial store after disinfection. Treatments were carried out with an 8% solution of a soluble organo-mercurial (Ceresan U. 564) at the rates of 0-67 and 0-9 gal./cwt. applied by the short wet method, and with an organo-mercurial powder (Ceresan UT. 1875 A) at the rate of 12 oz./cwt. applied by the fixation method using 0-9 gal. of separated milk per cwt. The results obtained show that treatment by either method has the effect of lowering the percentage of viable seeds during subsequent storage and that the higher the moisture content of the seed before treatment the earlier this effect becomes apparent. It is suggested that seed to be treated by the short wet method on a commercial scale should be dried to contain about 5% of moisture, that not more than 0-67 gal./cwt. of liquid be applied and that the seed should not be stored for longer than 3 months after treatment. Following upon these suggestions, 10-ton lots of seed were treated commercially by the short wet method using a Kontramix machine and no ill effects on the crop were observed.  相似文献

Suitable organo-mercury preparations applied by the short wet method of seed treatment and organo-mercury powders, of the type used for treating cereal seeds, fixed to the seed with water by the fixation method of treatment, gave as satisfactory control of seedling blight and better control of stem break and browning than a proprietary dry fungicide containing tetra-methyl thiuram disulphide (Nomersan) applied at the rate of 12 oz./cwt. of seed.
Treatment of seed heavily infected with Polyspora Lint using an efficient fungicide resulted in highly significant increases in crop and fibre yields, while in the case of seed heavily infected with Colletotrichum Lini similar treatments significantly increased the yield of fibre but not the crop yield. Some treatments significantly increased the crop and fibre yields even when the seed used was only slightly contaminated with P. Lini and C. Lini. The results presented support the suggestion that effective treatment of the seed may produce an increase of fibre not directly attributable to the prevention of seedling blight or stem break and browning but which may be explained by a general beneficial effect due to seed disinfection.
The results obtained suggest that no treatment consistently affected crop establishment in the field.  相似文献

In a replicated field experiment mean yields of wheat from plots that, in the preceding 2 years, had carried oats, beans or potatoes were 39.2 and 42.6 cwt. per acre in 1954 for Holdfast and Cappelle, respectively; 42.8 and 55.8 in 1955 and 34.9 and 49.6 in 1956. Previous wheat crops had more effect than any other treatment in increasing the incidence of eyespot, take-all and weeds and in decreasing the number of ears per unit area and the yield of grain. In 1956 on plots carrying the first, second and third successive wheat crops the percentages of straws with eyespot were respectively 12, 54 and 42 and with take-all 0.1, 1 and 16. Cappelle was less severely infected by eyespot than Holdfast. The second and third successive wheat crops yielded an average of 23.3 cwt./acre less than the first wheat crop. Cappelle consistently yielded more than Holdfast, the mean difference being 13.8 cwt./acre after potatoes but only 3.8 cwt./acre after two wheat crops. The higher seed-rate gave an average increase in grain yield of 3.3 cwt./acre; but where eyespot and take-all were both severe the lower seed-rate yielded as much total and more dressed grain than the higher. Wheat given a spring top dressing of 6 cwt./acre Nitro-Chalk yielded an average of 4 cwt./acre more grain than wheat given 3 cwt./acre.  相似文献

1. When using the seedling-emergence method to analyse a soil seed bank the greenhouse conditions should match the germination requirements of the species involved. Although the seedling-emergence method is common practice in ecological studies, the germination characteristics of many species are not known, or are only partly known.
2. Before carrying out a large-scale seed-bank study in a wet dune slack, we tested the water requirements of the species in the seed bank, comparing a waterlogged soil with a moist soil. Four species germinated in significantly larger numbers in a waterlogged soil, seven species in a moist soil and 11 species showed no significant difference. When a species was present in low densities, it was often missed using the less appropriate treatment.
3. These results emphasize the need for a preliminary study before carrying out a seed-bank analysis and show the danger of using a 'standard' method to analyse soil samples from different habitats.  相似文献

Summary A short survey of different problems connected with the aseptic cultivation of higher plants is given.Accounts have been given of experiments in which antibiotics and fungicides have been used, as well separately as in combination, as surface-sterilizing agents.The use of chlorine as a sterilizing agent for the surface-sterilization of pea seed has been investigated and an account given of the importance of damage to the skin of the seed in the procedure.Procedures for the surface sterilization of oats and barley, and for pea seed, have been developed.Various arrangements in which the aseptic cultivation of higher plants may be carried out are described.  相似文献

Observations in Worcestershire have shown that heavy losses of salad onions due to white rot may occur on sites which have not been known to carry a previous susceptible crop. Reasons for this are discussed. During five seasons a good control of the disease has been obtained by treating the seed with pure calomel applied with a resin-alcohol sticker. The treatment also gave some control of damping off of seedlings due to Corticium solani. Broadcasting 4 % calomel dust at 2½-3 cwt. per acre was less satisfactory in controlling white rot. In one season promising results were obtained with seed treatment of bulb onions.  相似文献

In a replicated field experiment on light sandy loam at Woburn, where winter wheat is a very uncertain crop, Cappelle and Holdfast, grown after potatoes with dung, yielded 50 and 41 cwt./acre of grain, respectively, when given 6 cwt./acre of Nitro-Chalk in April, compared with 19 and 20 cwt./acre when unfertilized. The same fertilized plots yielded 29 and 19 cwt., respectively, in the second, and 25 and 17 cwt./acre, respectively, in the third year on the same land, whereas unfertilized plots of both varieties yielded only 9 and 5 cwt./acre. The decrease in mean yield from 27 cwt. in the first, to 15 and 10 cwt./acre in the second and third crops was associated with a decrease in ear number from 16.7 to 14.6 and 12.2, respectively, and with a striking decrease in weight of grain per ear, caused partly by a large increase in the proportion of small grains. Eyespot ( Cercosporella herpotrichoides Fron.) although present each year did not become prevalent; an increase in the percentage straws affected by take-all ( Ophiobolus graminis Sacc.) from 9 to 15 and 26%, respectively, and a severe increase in weed infestation ( Agrostis gigantea ) appeared to be the main factors reducing yield.
Nitro-Chalk applied in April yielded most grain every year, and wheat fertilized at this time had less eyespot and take-all than that fertilized in March. Fertilizer applied in May increased weed growth, failed to decrease take-all and yielded fewer ears, less grain, and a higher proportion of tailcorn than did earlier applications.  相似文献

Four rice cultivars, susceptible or partially resistant to Pyricularia grisea were evaluated for their apparent infection rates (r) and for terminal severity values in seedlings grown in seedbeds. Susceptibility of partially resistant cultivars decreased when seeded in wet seedbed compared to those grown in raised or upland seedbed. The degree of blast reduction due to flooding varied with rice genotype, seeding rate, and environmental conditions. Flooding was effective in managing seedling blast of partially resistant cultivars but not of susceptible cultivar. Use of a lower seed rate in comparison to a higher seed rate also led to reductions in r-values and terminal disease severities. However, in case of the susceptible cultivar IR50, effect of seed rate was more pronounced, when low amount and short duration of rainfall occurred. Flooding of wet beds with low seed rate further reduced the blast incidence. Results of this study suggest that with appropriate use of water, seed rate, and partial host resistance there are prospects for effective control of leaf blast in the tropics.  相似文献

In seasonal climates, rainfall patterns are highly variable across years, and can control seed bank dependent regeneration. Here we asked how changing the timing and duration of the wet season would affect the germination of the soil seed bank of a 14-year-old seeder-dominated shrubland. Soil samples, subjected or not to a heat shock, simulating fire, were set to germinate in a chamber whose conditions (temperature and photoperiod) were successively changed to simulate autumn, winter, and spring. Irrigation was implemented to produce three wet season treatments, varying its timing and duration: long (14?weeks of irrigation, during autumn, winter, and spring), medium (8?weeks, late autumn to early spring) and short (4?weeks in winter). Wet season treatments significantly affected germination of shrubs and herbs, as well as species richness and diversity, whereby the later and shorter the season, the lower these variables. Dicots were more sensitive to the treatments than monocots. The timing of the wet season was also important, as similar significant differences were found when only the first 4 weeks of each simulated wet season treatment were considered; the later the season, the lower the germination and richness. Heating the soil generally increased germination but few significant effects were found. We document that a change in the timing and/or duration of the wet season can significantly affect soil seed bank germination. We discuss these results in a context of shifting rainfall patterns under climate change.  相似文献

An experiment was made on the fourth, fifth and sixth successive crops of winter wheat to determine the effects of various treatments on the troubles which result from close cereal cropping. Eyespot and lodging were prevalent in the first year (1946); weeds in the second; eyespot, lodging, take-all and weeds in the third.
Spraying with H2SO4 reduced the incidence of eyespot, lodging and weeds, and increased yield of grain on plots which received sulphate of ammonia (by 2.7, 2.2 and 10.0 cwt./acre in successive years).
Sulphate of ammonia increased the incidence at harvest of eyespot and lodging, reduced take-all and consistently increased yield of straw. Eyespot and lodging reduced the effect of the fertilizer on yield of grain, take-all increased it.
Increase in seed rate increased the incidence of severe eyespot and of take-all; it increased lodging except when plants were dwarfed by take-all.
Weight of straw and percentage straws with severe eyespot lesions independently affected lodging, together accounting for 51% of the variance in percentage area lodged at harvest and 64 % of that lodged 33 days earlier.
Mean yields of grain on untreated plots sown with 3.3 1/2 bushels seed/acre fell from 26.0 to 22.5 to 11.7 cwt./acre in successive years, whereas yields of 28.4, 29.9 and 29.1 cwt./acre were obtained on sprayed plots sown with 1 1/2.2 bushels seed/acre which received 4 cwt./acre sulphate of ammonia, showing that high yields were maintained when eyespot, lodging, take-all and weeds were controlled.
By 1948 yields of grain on unsprayed plots had fallen to the level of those on similarly manured plots on the continuous wheat experiment on Broadbalk field. Spraying increased grain by amounts similar to those resulting from one year's fallow on Broadbalk; but fallow had its greatest effects on plots with low nitrogen, spraying on those with high nitrogen.  相似文献

Water absorption by and seedling emergence of barley (Hordeum vulgare) seeds was studied in a two layer drying out system. Seeds were placed 3 cm below surface in sandy loam (Typic Ustochrept) soil having 4 or 7g.100g–1 water underlain by wet (10g.100g–1) layer 2, 4 or 6cm below seed. The study was carried out at 18°, 23°, 28° and 33°C with and without a thin liquid-flow barrier placed on top of the wet layer.Water absorption by seed and coefficient of rate of emergence showed parabalic relation with temperature and strong soil-water × temperature interactions. Liquid-flow barrier considerably reduced the seed water absorption, percent emergence and coefficient of rate of emergence showing thereby that liquid flow was the principal mode of upward water transport from the wet soil to the seed. Influence of both the wet soil and the liquid-flow barrier was detectable up to about 8 cm; shorter the distance greater the effect. It is concluded that in a drying out seed-zone, in addition to wetness of the soil surrounding the seed the wetness of the soil several cm below the seed is also crucial for seedling emergence. Also indicated that the optimum temperatures in drying out seed-zones are different from those in the absence of evaporation.  相似文献

Question: Which are the success and failure of restoration measures, particularly sod‐cutting and hydrological measures, in small wetlands on mineral soils in The Netherlands. Location: Twente, in the eastern part of The Netherlands. Methods: Success or failure of restoration measures has been assessed by comparing experimental plots with that in reference plots for (1) species richness, (2) re‐establishment of endangered species and (3) species composition, including life forms and Red List species. In total 119 samples were taken in 42 permanent plots in fen meadows, small‐sedge marshes, wet heathlands, and soft‐water pools. Topsoil samples were analysed for pH, Ca, Mg, Na, K and Cation Exchange Capacity. Gradient analysis was carried out by means of Canonical Correspondence Analysis. Results: Sod‐cutting, in combination with re‐wetting measures (infilling of ditches and drains), led to restoration of communities of soft‐water pools and small sedge marshes within five years. This rapid recovery is probably related to the presence of persistent seed banks of the component species of these communities. Complete restoration of fen meadows took longer (10–15 yr). Apparently, many species of fen meadows have short‐lived seed banks. Sod‐cutting of a degraded wet heathland and a soft‐water pool was only successful temporarily, probably as a consequence of low water tables. Conclusions: To prevent depletion of (persistent) soil seed banks, sod‐cutting in nutrient‐poor wetlands is not recommended in areas where the groundwater regime and the base status of the soil can not be restored to levels required by plant communities of wet heathlands.  相似文献

Background and Aims

Alpine plants are considered one of the groups of species most sensitive to the direct and indirect threats to ecosystems caused by land use and climate change. Collecting and banking seeds of plant species is recognized as an effective tool for providing propagating material to re-establish wild plant populations and for habitat repair. However, seeds from cold wet environments have been shown to be relatively short lived in storage, and therefore successful long-term seed conservation for alpine plants may be difficult. Here, the life spans of 69 seed lots representing 63 related species from alpine and lowland locations from northern Italy are compared.

Methods

Seeds were placed into experimental storage at 45 °C and 60 % relative humidity (RH) and regularly sampled for germination. The time taken in storage for viability to fall to 50 % (p50) was determined using probit analysis and used as a measure of relative seed longevity between seed lots.

Key Results

Across species, p50 at 45 °C and 60 % RH varied from 4·7 to 95·5 d. Seed lots from alpine populations/species had significantly lower p50 values compared with those from lowland populations/species; the lowland seed lots showed a slower rate of loss of germinability, higher initial seed viability, or both. Seeds were progressively longer lived with increased temperature and decreased rainfall at the collecting site.

Conclusions

Seeds of alpine plants are short lived in storage compared with those from lowland populations/related taxa. The lower resistance to ageing in seeds of alpine plants may arise from low selection pressure for seed resistance to ageing and/or damage incurred during seed development due to the cool wet conditions of the alpine climate. Long-term seed conservation of several alpine species using conventional seed banking methods will be problematic.  相似文献

Knowledge of propagation mechanisms is important for understanding the invasion ecology and management of invasive plants in order to restore invaded lands. The identification of recruitment pathways is one of the keys to understanding dispersal mechanisms and determining invasive plant control strategies. The objective of this study was to characterize the recruitment processes of Schinus terebenthifolius, one of the most serious plant invaders in Reunion Island’s lowlands. Surprisingly, little attention was given in literature to vegetative propagation by suckering as a dispersal mechanism. Yet, field observations on abandoned farmland and riverbanks combined with germination experiments have shown major differences in recruitment patterns between wet and dry areas. On abandoned dryland farms, seedling emergence is 35 times less than on riverbanks and is replaced by suckering. Birds facilitated seed germination, but their role in seed dispersal (ornithochory) appeared minor and restricted to the formation of satellite invasion foci. Water movement appears to be a more efficient vector than ornithochory because it aids seed transportation (hydrochory), seed germination, and suckering on riverbanks. Control and restoration programs must distinguish the two kinds of recruitment that impact on short‐ and long‐distance dispersal.  相似文献

Seed limitation may prevent successful restoration of native plant communities. Seed addition is a common restoration practice but the role of small mammals in affecting seedling recruitment is not well understood. The purpose of this investigation was to test the relative effect of seed introduction in combination with small mammal and bird exclosures in an Ohio wet meadow. We ask whether the ambient population of Microtus pennsylvanicus (1) alters species composition (e.g. forb/grass/sedge, invasive, non-native); (2) influences plant diversity; and (3) reduces the effect of increasing local plant richness through seed introductions. We established a 2×2 factorial design including a seed addition treatment (0 and 20 seed species added) and an exclosure treatment (open and fenced to exclude all mammalian and bird herbivores and granivores). Seeds from twenty native species were selected to represent a broad range of plant life forms typically found in temperate eastern North American wet meadow communities. All species were obligate or facultative wetland species with forbs, grasses and sedges represented. We found that forb species increased inside exclosures, especially in the seed addition treatment. We also found that relative biomass of invasive species was reduced in exclosures and with seed addition. Species richness increased with seed addition; however, exclosures significantly increased species richness and diversity, particularly of those species that were experimentally introduced by seed. Our results support the seed limitation hypotheses. It is also evident that seed and seedling predation are important factors that can control wet meadow community composition and diversity.  相似文献

A new technique is reported for the physical mapping of low copy DNA sequences on plant chromosomes. Individual chromosomes were microisolated and their DNA used as the target for the polymerase chain reaction in order to identify the chromosome carrying a specific gene sequence. The use of defined translocation chromosomes further refined the resolution of the method to a subchromosomal level. To demonstrate the applicability of the procedure genes have been localized coding for vicilin seed storage proteins on the field bean Vicia faba L. in a region which includes the centromere and the proximal parts of the short and the long arms of chromosome II.  相似文献

Menazon, an organophosphorus insecticide (only slightly toxic to mammals), applied to sugar-beet seed, decreased the proportion of seedlings infested with aphids during May and early June and the number of aphids per plant during June and early July to one-third of that in the control plots. It also checked the spread of virus yellows. Of eight field trials in 1965, 1966 and 1967 in which more than 10% of the plants in plots not treated with insecticide had yellows, menazon seed dressing increased sugar yield by about 8 cwt per acre. Spraying with demeton-methyl when ‘a spray warning’ was issued in the area gave a similar increase, and had no further effect on plots sown with menazon-treated seed. Menazon-dressed sugar-beet seed is recommended in regions where yellows is usually prevalent, or where there is reason to expect a large aphid infestation.  相似文献

In experiments with spring and winter wheat at Rothamsted and Woburn during 4 years CCC increased yield at close spacing (4 in) (10 cm) more than at usual spacing (8 in) (20 cm), but there was no interaction between spacing and yield. Some experiments tested up to 2·4 cwt/acre (300 kg/ha) N to see whether yields continued to increase with more than usual amounts of N, when CCC prevented lodging. There was no evidence of this. When a short dry spell occurred at ear emergence, yield of spring wheat was increased by 6 cwt/acre (750 kg/ha) by CCC and 10 cwt (1250 kg) by irrigation. CCC probably improves yield in these conditions because the larger root system it causes enables more ear-bearing shoots to survive. CCC increases yield in two ways, either by increasing ears or grain per ear. In an unlodged crop CCC usually makes the grains smaller, but by preventing lodging it can also increase size. Usually CCC decreases the leaf area per shoot. The flag leaf may be smaller, unchanged or larger than those of untreated plants. There was no obvious connexion between flag-leaf area and grain yield; when CCC decreased flag-leaf area duration by 25 %, grain yield was unchanged. The results suggest that using CCC gives a more than even chance of a profitable yield increase.  相似文献

Standardized inoculations of the potato varieties Catriona and Doon Star over 6 years have shown that shortening the growth period, either by deferring planting or by removing the haulm prematurely, may considerably reduce susceptibility of the tubers to dry rot (Fusarium caeruleum). Although these treatments reduce dry-matter content of the tubers, no direct relationship between this factor and susceptibility was established. High pre-maturity susceptibility was confirmed at the time of flowering; as the haulm matured susceptibility decreased: when the haulm was dead tubers were resistant. Within a fortnight after any time of premature haulm removal, tubers became completely resistant and showed a decrease in sucrose content but not in content of reducing sugars. It is suggested that susceptibility in the immature tuber is closely related to the content of sucrose, which accumulates because of rapid translocation from the vigorously growing haulm. After harvest, tuber susceptibility slowly increased during storage, with an increase mainly in reducing sugars, but these two factors were not directly related. An application of 6 cwt/acre (753 kg/ha) of 12:12:18 NPK fertilizer to Catriona significantly reduced liability to infection. Additional nitrogen (6 cwt/acre ammonium sulphate) raised tuber susceptibility to that in a non-fertilized plot: when sulphate of ammonia was the only treatment given, the tubers were significantly more susceptible than those receiving complete fertilizer.  相似文献
