Competition among pollen grains for the chance to fertilize ovules typically involves two stages: arrival times on stigmas and/or the growth of pollen tubes through styles. In a previous study of Hibiscus moscheutos, we found that individual pollen donors often differed in pollen tube competitive ability. Here we determined whether short delays in pollen arrival time altered the average success of "fast" and "slow" pollen donors when both types of pollen experienced the same delays. Hand-pollination experiments were carried out using four pairs of pollen donors that differed in competitive ability. We allowed delays of 15 or 30 min between the first and second pollen donor and then determined seed paternity using allozyme markers. The second donor typically sired fewer seeds than pollen that arrived earlier, but, contrary to expectation, "faster" pollen did not always sire significantly more seeds than "slower" pollen when each was applied after delays of the same duration. In two of the four pairs of donors, differences that were seen following simultaneous pollinations disappeared when each type of pollen was applied following identical delays of 15 or 30 min. This unexpected response suggests that the dynamics of pollen tube competition are more complex than anticipated.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE--To evaluate the impact of a fast track triage system for patients with acute myocardial infarction. DESIGN--Comparison of delays in admission to hospital and in receiving thrombolytic treatment before and after introducing fast track system with delays recorded in 1987-8. Patients fulfilling clinical and electrocardiographic criteria for myocardial infarction were selected for rapid access to the cardiac care team, bypassing evaluation by the medical registrar. SETTING--Major accident and emergency, cardiac and trauma centre. SUBJECTS--359 patients admitted to the cardiac care unit during 1 February to 31 July 1990 with suspected acute infarction. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES--Accuracy of diagnosis and delay from arrival at hospital to thrombolytic treatment. RESULTS--248 of the 359 patients had myocardial infarction confirmed, of whom 127 received thrombolytic treatment. The fast track system correctly identified 79 out of 127 (62%) patients who subsequently required thrombolytic treatment. 95% (79/83) of patients treated with thrombolysis after fast track admission had the diagnosis confirmed by electrocardiography and enzyme analysis. The median delay from hospital admission to thrombolytic treatment fell from 93 minutes in 1987-8 to 49 minutes in fast track patients (p less than 0.001). Delay in admission to the cardiac care unit was reduced by 47% for fast tract patients (median 60 minutes in 1987-8 v 32 minutes in 1990, p less than 0.001) and by 25% for all patients (60 minutes v 45 minutes, p less than 0.001). CONCLUSION--This fast track system requires no additional staff or equipment, and it halves inhospital delay to thrombolytic treatment without affecting the accuracy of diagnosis among patients requiring thrombolysis.  相似文献

Forty-three million Americans are uninsured. This article explores the difficulties people experience in seeking health care through the health care "safety net," which provides most of the health care that uninsured people receive, and critiques the gaps, inconsistencies, and failures of such care. In research with 176 African Americans and Latinos who had no health insurance, it was found that they delay seeking care because of cost, do without medications, have negative views of safety net health care, and experience discrimination. As a consequence of dissatisfaction with safety net care, avoidance of the health care system was commonplace. It is concluded that safety net health care facilitates the development of unhealthy practices, such as delays in seeking care. The inadequacy of safety net health care is thus injurious to people's health.  相似文献

How stable synchrony in neuronal networks is sustained in the presence of conduction delays is an open question. The Dynamic Clamp was used to measure phase resetting curves (PRCs) for entorhinal cortical cells, and then to construct networks of two such neurons. PRCs were in general Type I (all advances or all delays) or weakly type II with a small region at early phases with the opposite type of resetting. We used previously developed theoretical methods based on PRCs under the assumption of pulsatile coupling to predict the delays that synchronize these hybrid circuits. For excitatory coupling, synchrony was predicted and observed only with no delay and for delays greater than half a network period that cause each neuron to receive an input late in its firing cycle and almost immediately fire an action potential. Synchronization for these long delays was surprisingly tight and robust to the noise and heterogeneity inherent in a biological system. In contrast to excitatory coupling, inhibitory coupling led to antiphase for no delay, very short delays and delays close to a network period, but to near-synchrony for a wide range of relatively short delays. PRC-based methods show that conduction delays can stabilize synchrony in several ways, including neutralizing a discontinuity introduced by strong inhibition, favoring synchrony in the case of noisy bistability, and avoiding an initial destabilizing region of a weakly type II PRC. PRCs can identify optimal conduction delays favoring synchronization at a given frequency, and also predict robustness to noise and heterogeneity.  相似文献

Demethylation of DNA promotes flowering in plants from the vernalization-responsive ecotype C24 of Arabidopsis thaliana (L.) Heynh., but delays flowering in the ecotype Landsberg erecta which is not responsive to vernalization. To investigate these contrasting effects of low methylation we have monitored flowering times and expression of two repressors of flowering, FLC and FWA, in low-methylation plants from three late-flowering mutants in the ecotype Landsberg erecta. Demethylation of DNA decreased FLC expression in the vernalization-responsive mutants, but was not associated with a promotion of flowering; rather, in some lines, demethylation delayed flowering. The opposing effects of demethylation could be explained by its differential effect on the expression of two repressors of flowering. FLC was down-regulated in plants with low methylation, promoting flowering, while FWA was activated in response to demethylation, which probably delays the transition to flowering. Expression of the FWA gene did not delay flowering in plants of ecotype C24; our data suggest that the FWA protein of C24 may be non-functional.  相似文献

Concanavalin A (Con A) has been shown to induce delays in oral regeneration in the ciliate Stentor coeruleus. Associated with the delayed oral regeneration is a shedding of the cell's extracellular pellicle with the loss of some pigment granules. It is shown that the delays in oral regeneration are not the result of the pigment shedding. The delays are localized in the earliest stages of oral regeneration prior to stage 4. The delays caused by Con A are completely reversible by the addition of 2 mg/ml alpha-D-methyl mannoside either at the time of Con A exposure or 5 min later. Con A clearly binds to the cell surface as shown by the binding of FITC-Con A and its reversal by alpha-methyl mannoside. Crosslinking of Con A receptor molecules may be responsible for the effects of Con A since succinyl Con A, which does not crosslink these receptors, has no effect on oral regeneration even at double the Con A concentration. Calcium ions are also implicated in the action of Con A because an excess of extracellular calcium (10 mM) completely eliminates the Con A delays when added simultaneously with Con A. Examination of the minimum extracellular calcium concentration required for this effect showed that 2 mM calcium can reverse most of the delays but that 5 mM is necessary to completely reverse the delays caused by Con A. If the addition of calcium is delayed for various times after Con A addition, the extracellular calcium is progressively less effective in reversing the Con A delays.  相似文献

The collection and handling of colony resources such as food, water, and nest-construction material is often divided into subtasks in which the material is passed from one worker to another. This is known as task partitioning. If tasks are partitioned with direct transfer of material between foragers and receivers, queueing delays can occur as individuals search or wait for a transfer partner. Changes in environmental conditions and relative number of foragers and receivers affect these delays as well as colony ergonomic efficiency. These delays are used in recruitment in both honeybees and Polybia wasps. This study investigates the distribution of queueing delays and the information content and quality of those delays using a stochastic-simulation model. Information quality increases with colony size. When the relative proportions of foragers and receivers are suboptimal, the group in excess has better information. Individuals can increase information quality of delays by two mechanisms: averaging over consecutive trips and averaging over multiple transfers within a trip where direct transfer occurs. We suggest that multiple transfer occurs in the honeybee in order to improve information quality.  相似文献

Neuronal synchronization is often associated with small time delays, and these delays can change as a function of stimulus properties. Investigation of time delays can be cumbersome if the activity of a large number of neurons is recorded simultaneously and neuronal synchronization is measured in a pairwise manner (such as the cross-correlation histograms) because the number of pairwise measurements increases quadratically. Here, a non-parametric statistical test is proposed with which one can investigate (i) the consistency of the delays across a large number of pairwise measurements and (ii) the consistency of the changes in the time delays as a function of experimental conditions. The test can be classified as non-parametric because it takes into account only the directions of the delays and thus, does not make assumptions about the distributions and the variances of the measurement errors.  相似文献

Numerous mammalian taxa exhibit reproductive delays, pauses in reproduction that occur between mating and fertilization, between fertilization and implantation of the embryo, or after an embryo has implanted. Of the 27 mammalian orders, 9 are known to exhibit reproductive delays, including Diptrotodontia, Dasyuromorphia, Eulipotyphyta, Cingulata, Carnivora, Rodentia, Chiroptera, Lagomorpha and Cetartiodactyla. Most researchers interested in delays have focused on their evolutionary origins. However, the consequences of these delays have not been considered fully. Given the lengthening of the period over which reproduction occurs, it is possible that this unique aspect of reproduction facilitates post‐copulatory sexual selection. When considered in the context of sexual selection, delays may allow sperm competition and female manipulation of fertilization (cryptic female choice) as well as other post‐copulatory processes. We investigate the potential for reproductive delays to facilitate post‐copulatory sexual selection and suggest avenues for research that may further our knowledge of sexual selection. We also provide a general review of reproductive delays in mammals.  相似文献

The temporal contingency of feedback is an essential requirement of successful human-computer interactions. The timing of feedback not only affects the behavior of a user but is also accompanied by changes in psychophysiology and neural activity. In three fMRI experiments we systematically studied the impact of delayed feedback on brain activity while subjects performed an auditory categorization task. In the first fMRI experiment, we analyzed the effects of rare and thus unexpected delays of different delay duration on brain activity. In the second experiment, we investigated if users can adapt to frequent delays. Therefore, delays were presented as often as immediate feedback. In a third experiment, the influence of interaction outage was analyzed by measuring the effect of infrequent omissions of feedback on brain activity. The results show that unexpected delays in feedback presentation compared to immediate feedback stronger activate inter alia bilateral the anterior insular cortex, the posterior medial frontal cortex, the left inferior parietal lobule and the right inferior frontal junction. The strength of this activation increases with the duration of the delay. Thus, delays interrupt the course of an interaction and trigger an orienting response that in turn activates brain regions of action control. If delays occur frequently, users can adapt, delays become expectable, and the brain activity in the observed network diminishes over the course of the interaction. However, introducing rare omissions of expected feedback reduces the system’s trustworthiness which leads to an increase in brain activity not only in response to such omissions but also following frequently occurring and thus expected delays.  相似文献

Recently a state-space model with time delays for inferring gene regulatory networks was proposed. It was assumed that each regulation between two internal state variables had multiple time delays. This assumption caused underestimation of the model with many current gene expression datasets. In biological reality, one regulatory relationship may have just a single time delay, and not multiple time delays. This study employs Boolean variables to capture the existence of the time-delayed regulatory relationships in gene regulatory networks in terms of the state-space model. As the solution space of time delayed relationships is too large for an exhaustive search, a genetic algorithm (GA) is proposed to determine the optimal Boolean variables (the optimal time-delayed regulatory relationships). Coupled with the proposed GA, Bayesian information criterion (BIC) and probabilistic principle component analysis (PPCA) are employed to infer gene regulatory networks with time delays. Computational experiments are performed on two real gene expression datasets. The results show that the GA is effective at finding time-delayed regulatory relationships. Moreover, the inferred gene regulatory networks with time delays from the datasets improve the prediction accuracy and possess more of the expected properties of a real network, compared to a gene regulatory network without time delays.  相似文献

In complex networks such as gene networks, traffic systems or brain circuits it is important to understand how long it takes for the different parts of the network to effectively influence one another. In the brain, for example, axonal delays between brain areas can amount to several tens of milliseconds, adding an intrinsic component to any timing-based processing of information. Inferring neural interaction delays is thus needed to interpret the information transfer revealed by any analysis of directed interactions across brain structures. However, a robust estimation of interaction delays from neural activity faces several challenges if modeling assumptions on interaction mechanisms are wrong or cannot be made. Here, we propose a robust estimator for neuronal interaction delays rooted in an information-theoretic framework, which allows a model-free exploration of interactions. In particular, we extend transfer entropy to account for delayed source-target interactions, while crucially retaining the conditioning on the embedded target state at the immediately previous time step. We prove that this particular extension is indeed guaranteed to identify interaction delays between two coupled systems and is the only relevant option in keeping with Wiener’s principle of causality. We demonstrate the performance of our approach in detecting interaction delays on finite data by numerical simulations of stochastic and deterministic processes, as well as on local field potential recordings. We also show the ability of the extended transfer entropy to detect the presence of multiple delays, as well as feedback loops. While evaluated on neuroscience data, we expect the estimator to be useful in other fields dealing with network dynamics.  相似文献

The robust asymptotic stability analysis for uncertain BAM neural networks with both interval time-varying delays and stochastic disturbances is considered. By using the stochastic analysis approach, employing some free-weighting matrices and introducing an appropriate type of Lyapunov functional which takes into account the ranges for delays, some new stability criteria are established to guarantee the delayed BAM neural networks to be robustly asymptotically stable in the mean square. Unlike the most existing mean square stability conditions for BAM neural networks, the supplementary requirements that the time derivatives of time-varying delays must be smaller than 1 are released and the lower bounds of time varying delays are not restricted to be 0. Furthermore, in the proposed scheme, the stability conditions are delay-range-dependent and rate-dependent/independent. As a result, the new criteria are applicable to both fast and slow time-varying delays. Three numerical examples are given to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed criteria.  相似文献

We consider the effect of distributed delays in neural feedback systems. The avian optic tectum is reciprocally connected with the isthmic nuclei. Extracellular stimulation combined with intracellular recordings reveal a range of signal delays from 3 to 9 ms between isthmotectal elements. This observation together with prior mathematical analysis concerning the influence of a delay distribution on system dynamics raises the question whether a broad delay distribution can impact the dynamics of neural feedback loops. For a system of reciprocally connected model neurons, we found that distributed delays enhance system stability in the following sense. With increased distribution of delays, the system converges faster to a fixed point and converges slower toward a limit cycle. Further, the introduction of distributed delays leads to an increased range of the average delay value for which the system's equilibrium point is stable. The system dynamics are determined almost exclusively by the mean and the variance of the delay distribution and show only little dependence on the particular shape of the distribution.  相似文献

In the present climate of organ shortage, high demand for kidney transplants, and better clinical outcomes from living donors, health care professionals expect and encourage patients to accept offers of living related donor (LRD) kidneys. When patients decide not to adhere to this course of treatment, scholars and policy makers may question why, given that it delays their chances of receiving a transplant. This article reports on patients' decisions to refuse LRD kidney offers. An 18-month study was conducted of treatment decisions by hemodialysis patients (N = 79). Fewer than half of those offered an LRD kidney (N = 64) were willing to accept it, suggesting that sociocultural factors inform decisions. Patients expressed concerns about the potential donors' well-being over their own and about compromising their relationships with the donors. This article concludes that social relations, emotions, and ethnomedical beliefs play an important role in patients' treatment decisions and thus contributes to the anthropology of decision making.  相似文献

The autosomal recessive mutation waltzing (wz), displaying abnormal circling and head-shaking behavior, has previously been reported in the musk shrew (Suncus murinus). Postnatal development of reflexes and locomotor patterns in an open arena were examined in wz/wz mutant shrews. The wz/wz shrews showed extreme developmental delays in surface-righting reflex and negative geotaxis until 10-16 days after birth, but both reflexes eventually recovered to the levels of +/wz normal. Nevertheless, the wz/wz adults exhibited bi-directional circling behavior 59 times, head-tossing behavior 22 times and horizontal head-shaking behavior 6 times more frequent than in the +/wz controls. Although the wz/wz adult shrews were extremely hyperactive with daily spontaneous locomotor activity exceeding 4-7 times control shrew activity, they appeared to have a normal circadian rhythm. This shrew mutant may therefore be useful as a model for hyperactivity syndromes in humans.  相似文献

This article examines the functional and clinical impact of time delays that arise in human physiological systems, especially control systems. An overview of the mathematical and physiological contexts for considering time delays will be illustrated, from the system level to cell level, by examining models that incorporate time delays. This examination will highlight how such delays in combination with other system structures and parameters influence system dynamics. Model analysis that reveals the influence of delays can also reveal related physiological effects which may have medical consequences and clinical applications.  相似文献

The mechanisms and circumstances that affect a plant's ability to tolerate herbivory are subjects of ongoing interest and investigation. Phenological differences, and the timing of flowering with respect to pollinators and pre-dispersal seed predators, may provide one mechanism underlying variable responses of plants to herbivore damage. The subalpine wildflower, Ipomopsis aggregata, grows across a wide range of elevations and, because phenology varies with elevation, phenological delays associated with elevation may affect the ability of I. aggregata to compensate for or tolerate browsing. Thus, we examined the response of I. aggregata to herbivory across an elevation gradient and addressed the interactions among phenological delays imposed by damage, elevation, pre-dispersal seed predation and pollination, on I. aggregata's compensatory response. Among high and low elevation populations in areas near the Rocky Mountain Biological Laboratory (RMBL) in Gothic, Colorado, we compared the responses of naturally browsed, artificially browsed (clipped), and unbrowsed (control) plants of I. aggregata. We compared responses in the date of initiation of flowering, timing of peak bloom, floral display, nectar production and sugar concentration, oviposition and fruit destruction by the pre-dispersal seed predator Hylemya sp. (Anthomyiidae), fruit production, and aboveground biomass production. Clipping had the greatest effect on reproductive success and clipped plants at high elevation exhibited the lowest tolerance for herbivory. The effects of browsing appear to be mediated by flowering phenology, and both browsing and elevation delayed flowering phenology. Time needed for regrowth delays flowering, and thus affects the overlap with seed predators and pollinators. As a result of delayed flowering, naturally browsed and clipped plants incurred lower rates of seed predation. In the absence of seed predation, plants would exhibit a lower tolerance to herbivory since naturally and artificially browsed plants had fewer fruits destroyed by Hylemya larvae. We provide additional evidence that, for populations near the RMBL, clipping and natural browsing do not have the same effect on I. aggregata plants. This may be due to the selection of larger plants by herbivores. Although under some conditions plants may tolerate browsing, in areas where the growing season is short a phenological delay imposed by damage is likely to significantly reduce plant fitness. Identifying the mechanisms that allow plants to tolerate herbivore damage will help to develop a general framework for understanding the role of tolerance in plant population and community dynamics, as well as plant-herbivore interactions.  相似文献
