A long-standing goal of speciation research is to describe how reproductive isolating barriers develop, when they arise along the ‘speciation continuum’, and to measure the strength with which they restrict gene flow. Drosophila arizonae and D. mojavensis are a recently diverged sister species pair distributed from the southwestern United States through southern Mexico. While incipient speciation in D. mojavensis has been studied for decades, relatively little attention has been directed toward D. arizonae, despite the fact that previous studies have revealed evidence for significant genetic differentiation among populations separated by geographic barriers. Here, we examine the potential for both pre- and post-mating reproductive isolation in D. arizonae from geographically isolated parts of North America. We find evidence for strong premating isolation between flies from northern mainland Mexico and southern mainland Mexico, but no evidence for postmating isolation in any cross. This study highlights the utility of the D. arizonae system for further investigation into the early evolution of premating isolation, and reinforces the potential of the D. arizonae/D. mojavensis system as a whole for studying the evolution of reproductive isolation at a range of divergence times.  相似文献

Microbial symbionts have come to be recognized as agents in the speciation of their eukaryote hosts. In this study, we asked if bacterial symbionts are, or were in the past, involved in the speciation of the gall-inducing aphid Slavum wertheimae (Hemiptera: Aphididae). This aphid is specific to the tree Pistacia atlantica, which has a fragmented distribution among mesic and xeric habitats, leading to corresponding fragmentation of the aphid population. Previous studies revealed genetic differentiation among populations of the gall-inducing aphid, suggesting cryptic allopatric speciation. Pistacia atlantica trees show no such variation. By means of diagnostic PCR, we screened several populations of S. wertheimae from mesic and xeric sites in Israel for the presence of nine known aphid symbionts: Arsenophonus, Hamiltonella, Regiella, Rickettsia, Rickettsiella, Serratia, Spiroplasma, Wolbachia, and X-type, as well as Cardinium, known to be a reproductive manipulator. Only one symbiont, Wolbachia, was detected in S. wertheimae. Wolbachia was found in all the aphids of the mesic populations, compared to 26% in the aphids from the xeric populations. Multilocus Sequence typing of Wolbachia revealed new haplotypes in the fbpA and coxA genes in both the mesic and xeric populations. Phylogenetic analysis showed that Wolbachia of S. wertheimae is closely related to Wolbachia strains from assorted hosts, mostly lepidopterans, but only distantly related to Wolbachia strains from other aphid species. We conclude that the cryptic speciation of mesic and xeric populations of S. wertheimae was likely driven by geographical isolation rather than by Wolbachia.  相似文献

Background

The evolution of reproductive traits, such as hybrid incompatibility (postzygotic isolation) and species recognition (prezygotic isolation), have shown their key role in speciation. Theoretical modeling has recently predicted that close linkage between genes controlling pre- and postzygotic reproductive isolation could accelerate the conditions for speciation. Postzygotic isolation could develop during the sympatric speciation process contributing to the divergence of populations. Using hybrid fitness as a measure of postzygotic reproductive isolation, we empirically studied population divergence in perch (Perca fluviatilis L.) from two genetically divergent populations within a lake.

Results

During spawning time of perch we artificially created parental offspring and F1 hybrids of the two populations and studied fertilization rate and hatching success under laboratory conditions. The combined fitness measure (product of fertilization rate and hatching success) of F1 hybrids was significantly reduced compared to offspring from within population crosses.

Conclusion

Our results suggest intrinsic genetic incompatibility between the two populations and indicate that population divergence between two populations of perch inhabiting the same lake may indeed be promoted by postzygotic isolation.  相似文献

Understanding the relative importance of various reproductive barriers to the early stages of speciation is an essential question in evolutionary biology. The closely related killifishes Fundulus heteroclitus and F. grandis occasionally hybridize in a small region in coastal Northeastern Florida showing that while barriers to reproduction exist, they are incomplete. The objective of this study was to elucidate barriers to reproduction between F. heteroclitus and F. grandis in the lab, as well as to quantify their strengths and relative contributions to reproductive isolation. Pre-zygotic (mating and fertilization) and post-zygotic (hatching) barriers were investigated by performing a variety of choice and no-choice laboratory mating experiments. Under no-choice conditions, barriers to mating had the greatest influence on hybrid production in F. grandis, whereas hatching barriers contributed to the majority of reproductive isolation in F. heteroclitus. Under choice conditions, however, pre-zygotic barriers had the greatest influence on hybrid production in both species. The total reproductive isolation that was observed in females of each species was stronger in F. heteroclitus than in F. grandis, and was nearly complete in F. heteroclitus females under choice conditions and was of moderate strength in F. grandis females. These results reveal an asymmetry in the potential gene flow between these two species, with F. grandis being more likely to hybridize than F. heteroclitus in the absence of environmental influences. No-choice backcrosses were also conducted and showed that at least some F1 hybrids are fertile. The observation that pre-zygotic barriers tend to be stronger than post-zygotic barriers in the early stages of speciation is consistent with similar studies in other organisms.  相似文献

Different architectural arrangements may represent contrasting morphological solutions to different environmental pressures. This work aims to elucidate whether the crown architecture of Lychnophora ericoides (Asteraceae) modifies in response to harsh soil conditions (nutrient poor and heavy metal rich) and how its crown architecture affects its reproduction. One hundred and sixty L. ericoides individuals were randomly sampled from eight populations, four on quartzite and four on iron canga rocky complexes in the Iron Quadrangle, southeastern Brazil. We performed soil analyses to characterize edaphic differences and used eight morphometric parameters to describe the crown architecture of the plants. We calculated the population density and reproductive potential to verify the relationship between habitat, architecture, and fitness. Canga soils were more nutrient rich than quartzite soils and plants were architecturally distinct in each habitat. Plants established on canga soils were shorter, had a thinner main branch, and a smaller leaf than those established on quartzite soils. Moreover, plants on canga soils had a larger crown diameter and a greater number of branches and inflorescences. There was no difference in population density but the reproductive potential varied among populations and habitats. The crown architecture of L. ericoides closely relates to reproductive potential and may favor the reproduction of more architectonically complex plants, regardless of habitat.  相似文献

Reproductive interference occurs when fitness of females of one species decreases because of misdirected courtship behaviors by males of another species. Reproductive interference strongly excludes either species in the interaction but it does not persist for long on an evolutionary time scale. Therefore, reproductive interference between a pair of co-evolved native species is difficult to observe because exclusion ends the interaction even if even the potential for reproductive interference still exists. However, anthropogenic environmental changes can bring about secondary contact between two species and trigger reproductive interference, leading to local species extinction. We demonstrated this phenomenon with two native spined loaches: Cobitis magnostriata (Cmag) and C. minamorii oumiensis (Cmio). In 2015 and 2016, we investigated the spatiotemporal dynamics of adults and juveniles of both species to estimate the effects of the relative abundance of adults on reproductive success. Additionally, we surveyed the distribution of juveniles and investigated the proportion of gravid females which failed to reproduce at the end of the spawning season. In 2016, Cmio juveniles were fewer than in 2015, although the abundances of Cmio adults were similarly low in both years and the Cmag adults were more abundant in 2016 than in 2015. The juveniles of the two species exhibited similar spatiotemporal dynamics. At the end of the spawning season, Cmag males were abundant and most Cmio females failed to reproduce. These results suggest that the two species share spawning habitats and seasons and that Cmag males exert reproductive interference on Cmio females. This report is the first of a study suggesting that anthropogenic environmental changes triggered reproductive interference between native species in the field.  相似文献

An ecological scenario of the origin of the plague microbe that is interpreted in the light of modern Darwinism (synthetic theory of evolution) is presented. It is shown that the plague microbe emerged from a clone of the psychrophilic saprozoonotic pseudotuberculosis microbe Yersinia pseudotuberculosis O:1b in the mountain steppe landscapes of Central Asia in the Sartan time, 22000–15000 years ago, in the monohostal Mongolian marmot (Marmota sibirica)–flea (Oropsylla silantiewi) host–parasite system. It was noted that the evolutionary process described corresponds to the sympatric form of speciation by transition of the clone of migrant founders to a new, already-existing ecological niche. It was established that monohostal specialization of the plague microbe was made possible due to heterothermia (5–37°C) of marmots in the hibernation period. The factors of the speciation process—isolation, the struggle for existence, and natural selection—were analyzed.  相似文献

Ranges of different species of medicinal leeches (Hirudo spp.) are nearly mutually exclusive with very few areas of overlapping. This biogeographical pattern suggests different ecological requirements for the two species. However, two habitats in Hungary and Ukraine where populations of H. verbana and H. medicinalis coexist were found. The aim of this research was to reveal differences in size structures and phenologies between the two species in a steppe pond with two populations. The study was conducted from March to September in 2009 and 2010 in Horila Dolyna, Kharkiv Region. Leeches were collected several times during the season, weighed and released. The abundance of H. verbana was always higher. The Mann-Whitney U-test and the Wilcoxon test were applied. Significant differences between sequential samples within the species were found. The large weight classes of H. verbana emerged by the end of summer and caused a higher variance in contrast to H. medicinalis. This suggests the higher growth rate and the more r-strategic biology of H. verbana in comparison with the largely K-strategic H. medicinalis.  相似文献

Analysis of the greenbug (Schizaphis graminum Rond.) — sorghum interaction system confirmed the hypothesis that rare insect virulence was related to reduced fitness. Greenbug clones from the Krasnodar population virulent to resistance genes Sgr5 and Sgr6 revealed lower fecundity in comparison with avirulent ones and were replaced in model populations during reproduction on a susceptible sorghum line. The main role of aphid fecundity was shown to provide higher fitness, reducing the frequency of virulent clones in natural populations.  相似文献

The degree of development of the mechanisms of postcopulatory isolation was evaluated on the basis of experimental hybridization of representatives of three subspecies of M. musculus (M. m. musculus, M. m. wagneri, and M. m. gansuensis) and remote populations of the subspecies M. m. musculus. Experimental crosses between the different subspecies and populations indicated the presence of initial stages of postcopulatory reproductive isolation between some forms of house mice. In a number of crosses conducted between different populations and subspecies of M. musculus, asymmetry was observed. In one variant of mating, M. m. musculus (male) × M. m. wagneri (female), a reduced intensity of breeding and nonviability of pups were observed. A decrease in the intensity of reproduction was found in all variants of crosses that used male M. m. musculus from the city of Ishim. These data are assumed to confirm the previous assumption about the hybrid origin of mice inhabiting that city. The results confirm a significant level of divergence of the subspecies M. m. musculus and M. m. wagneri. Thus, initial stages both of post- and precopulatory isolation mechanisms between M. m. wagneri and M. m. musculus were shown.  相似文献

Pollinator species are widely accepted as an important factor in plant reproductive isolation. Although mostly investigated in plants visited by different groups of pollinators (e.g., hummingbirds vs bees), few studies have examined the role of pollinators belonging to the same taxonomic group (e.g., only bees) on plant reproductive isolation. In this study, we investigate this question by evaluating pre- and post-zygotic mechanisms putatively involved in the reproductive isolation of two oil-rewarding sympatric Calceolaria species (i.e., Calceolaria filicaulis and C. arachnoidea) in an Andean ecosystem of Chile. We estimated reproductive isolation values using a combination of field (pollinator visitation rates) and experimental (intra and interspecific manual cross-pollination and seed germination of parents and hybrids) evidence. The two Calceolaria species were preferentially visited by different oil-collecting bee species. Results from hand cross-pollination experiments indicate that intraspecific crossings produced significantly more seeds than interspecific ones. Notwithstanding, seed germination essays did not reveal differences between parental and hybrids. Taken together, these results suggest that pollinator species are responsible for most of the reproductive isolation in the two Calceolaria species studied here. This study is the first assessment of pollinator-mediated reproductive isolation in Calceolaria species and the first to document reproductive barriers in oil-rewarding plants.  相似文献

Ulleung Island is an oceanic volcanic island in Korea, which has never been connected to the adjacent continent. Previous studies highlighted Ulleung Island as an excellent system to study the pattern and process of early stages of flowering plant evolutions on oceanic island. The predominant mode of speciation in flowering plants on Ulleung Island appears to be anagenesis. However, the potentially important role of hybrid speciation among incompletely reproductively isolated lineages cannot be ruled out. Viola woosanensis (Violaceae) is of purportedly hybrid origin between V. ulleungdoensis (i.e., formerly recognized as V. selkirkii in Ulleung Island) and V. chaerophylloides, based on morphology. To examine the origin of V. woosanensis, we sampled a total of 80 accessions, including V. woosanensis and its putative parental species and sequenced nrDNA ITS, and four highly variable chloroplast noncoding regions (trnL-trnF, rpl16 intron, atpF-atpH, and psbA-trnH). Representative species of Viola from Korea were also included in the phylogenetic analyses (maximum parsimony, maximum likelihood, and Bayesian inference). Additive polymorphic sites in the nrDNA ITS regions were confirmed by cloning amplicons from representative species. The molecular data strongly supported the hybrid origin of V. woosanensis, and the maternal and paternal parent were determined to be V. ulleungdoensis and V. chaerophylloides, respectively. The presence of two parental ribotypes in V. woosanensis (with the exception in one population) was confirmed by cloning, suggesting V. woosanensis is primarily the F1 generation. No trace of backcrossing and introgression with its parents was detected due to low fertility of hybrid species. We found a multiple and unidirectional hybrid origin of V. woosanensis. Additional studies are required to determine which factors contribute to asymmetric gene flow of Viola species in Ulleung Island.  相似文献

Common walnut (Juglans regia L.) is an economically important temperate tree species valued for both its nut and wood. We investigated the genetic diversity and population structure of J. regia germplasm from 13 locations in China using 10 markers derived from expressed sequences (EST-SSR) and sequence polymorphisms within the phenylalanine ammonia-lyase (PAL) gene. Analysis of the population genetic structure based on EST-SSRs showed distinct populations in northern versus southern China that were not reflected in the spatial distribution of PAL haplotypes. High levels of population differentiation were probably the result of reproductive isolation and in southern China, hybridization with Juglans sigillata. The results indicate the possible presence of distinct evolutionary lineages of J. regia in the Qinling and Daba Mountains of China and in Yunnan province that may require ecological management if they are to be retained as in situ resources.  相似文献

Habrobracon hebetor Say (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) is a cosmopolitan gregarious ectoparasitoid that attacks larvae of several species of Lepidoptera. Although there are two genetically different strains within H. hebetor, distribution of the strains has been poorly understood. In 2010, in Thailand, where H. hebetor has been known as a parasitoid of stored grain pests, it was found that H. hebetor attacked Opisina arenosella Walker (Lepidoptera: Oecophoridae), which is an invasive pest of coconut palm. For correct identification of this H. hebetor, we conducted DNA analysis and cross tests using populations collected from O. arenosella and stored grain pests in Thailand and populations in Japan known as H. hebetor. We obtained 413 bp of mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase I (COI) sequences and 414 bp of 16S rRNA gene sequences, and both indicated that there are two distinct clades within H. hebetor: one contains insects from Thailand, Spain, India, and Barbados; the other contains insects from Japan and the USA. There were no genetic differences or sexual isolation between Thai populations from different hosts. Our results also showed that populations in Thailand were sexually isolated from a H. hebetor population in Japan.  相似文献

Comparative sequence analysis of symbiotic genes (nodA, nodC, nodD, nifH), which are elements of accessory component of the rhizobial genome, demonstrated that the strains of Rhizobium leguminosarum bv. viciae, isolated from the nodules of a relic legume, Vavilovia formosa, the closest relative of hypothetical common ancestor of the tribe Fabeae, represented a group separated from the strains of R. leguminosarum bv. viciae, isolated from other representatives of this tribe (Vicia, Lathyrus, Pisum, Lens). No isolation was observed relative to the genes representing the core component of the rhizobial genome (16S rDNA, ITS, glnII) or relative to host specificity of the rhizobia. The data obtained suggest that sequence divergence of symbiotic genes marks the initial stage of sympatric speciation, which can be classified as the isolation of the relic “vaviloviae” symbiotype, a possible evolutionary precursor of the “viciae” biotype.  相似文献

Harmonia axyridis Pallas (1773) (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) is the well-studied system of invasive insect species. Native and invasive parts of the area of H. axyridis are isolated geographically. We studied the species composition and the distribution of bacterial symbionts Spiroplasma and Rickettsia in seven localities of the native area and six localities of the invasive area of H. axyridis. Rickettsia was detected in H. axyridis populations for the first time. We found that the proportion of beetles infected with Rickettsia in native and invasive populations of H. axyridis is about 0.03. Spiroplasma was found only in native populations of H. axyridis. The proportion of infected individuals with Spiroplasma in native populations of H. axyridis is about 0.08. All studied native populations of H. axyridis are infected with Spiroplasma, while all invasive populations are not. We discuss the possible influence of Spiroplasma and Rickettsia in the formation of invasive populations of H. axyridis.  相似文献

Mexico and Central America are among the most biodiverse regions on Earth, harboring many species with high levels of interpopulation morphological and genetic diversity. The mountainous topography of this region contains isolated sky island habitats that have the potential to promote speciation. This has been studied in vertebrates, yet few studies have examined the phylogeographic and genetic structure of insect species encompassing this region. Here we investigate geographic patterns of genetic and morphological divergence and speciation among widespread populations of the highly polymorphic bumble bee Bombus ephippiatus and its closest relative B. wilmattae. We used DNA sequences from a fragment of cytochrome oxidase I (COI), genotypes for twelve microsatellite markers, and morphometric data from wings to construct a well-supported inference of the divergences among these taxa. We have found complex patterns of genetic isolation and morphological divergence within B. ephippiatus across its geographic range and present evidence that B. ephippiatus comprises multiple independent evolutionary lineages. The pattern of their diversification corresponds to geographic and environmental isolating mechanisms, including the Mexican highlands, the lowlands of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec in southern Mexico, the Nicaraguan Depression, the patchily distributed volcanic ranges in Nuclear Central America and Pleistocene glacial cycles. These results have important implications for the development and distribution of B. ephippiatus as a commercial pollinator in Mexico and Central America.  相似文献

Amplification of the EPSPS gene has been previously identified as the glyphosate resistance mechanism in many populations of Amaranthus palmeri, a major weed pest in US agriculture. Here, we evaluate the effects of EPSPS gene amplification on both the level of glyphosate resistance and fitness cost of resistance. A. palmeri individuals resistant to glyphosate by expressing a wide range of EPSPS gene copy numbers were evaluated under competitive conditions in the presence or absence of glyphosate. Survival rates to glyphosate and fitness traits of plants under intra-specific competition were assessed. Plants with higher amplification of the EPSPS gene (53-fold) showed high levels of glyphosate resistance, whereas less amplification of the EPSPS gene (21-fold) endowed a lower level of glyphosate resistance. Without glyphosate but under competitive conditions, plants exhibiting up to 76-fold EPSPS gene amplification exhibited similar height, and biomass allocation to vegetative and reproductive organs, compared to glyphosate susceptible A. palmeri plants with no amplification of the EPSPS gene. Both the additive effects of EPSPS gene amplification on the level of glyphosate resistance and the lack of associated fitness costs are key factors contributing to EPSPS gene amplification as a widespread and important glyphosate resistance mechanism likely to become much more evident in weed plant species.  相似文献

The genus Tettigonia includes 26 species distributed in the Palaearctic region. Though the Green Bush-crickets are widespread in Europe and common in a variety of habitats throughout the Palaearctic ecozone, the genus is still in need of scientific attention due to the presence of a multitude of poorly explored taxa. In the present study, we sought to clarify the evolutionary relationships of Green Bush-crickets and the composition of taxa occurring in the Western Palaearctic. Based on populations from 24 disjunct localities, the phylogeny of the group was estimated using sequences of the cytochrome oxidase subunit I (COI) and the internal transcribed spacers 1 and 2 (ITS1 and ITS2). Morphological and acoustic variation documented for the examined populations and taxa was interpreted in the context of phylogenetic relationships inferred from our genetic analyses. The trees generated in the present study supported the existence of three main lineages: “A”—composed of all sampled populations of Tettigonia viridissima and the Tettigonia vaucheriana complex, “B”—comprising Tettigonia caudata, Tettigonia uvarovi, and the Tettigonia armeniaca complex, and “C”—consisting of Tettigonia cantans. The present study provides the first phylogenetic foundation for reviewing the systematics of Tettigonia (currently classified mostly according to morphological characteristics), proposing seven new synonymies.  相似文献

Ecological speciation has long been noted as a central topic in the field of evolutionary biology, and investigation into the relative importance of ecological and geographical factors is becoming increasingly emphasized. We surveyed genetic variation of 277 samples from 25 populations of nine Rhododendron species within Tsutsusi subgenus in Taiwan using simple sequence repeats of expressed sequence tags. Bayesian clustering revealed four genetic lineages: (1) the Rhododendron simsii, Rhododendron kanehirai, and Rhododendron nakaharae lineage (lineage 1); (2) the Rhododendron longiperulatum, Rhododendron breviperulatum, and Rhododendron noriakianum lineage (lineage 2); (3) the Rhododendron rubropilosum lineage (lineage 3); and (4) the Rhododendron oldhamii lineage (lineage 4). Asymmetric introgressions were found from lineage 3 into lineages 1 and 2 (introgressed lineages). Genetic admixture of non-R. oldhamii species was also revealed by a neighbor-joining tree. Variation partitioning showed that environment explained much larger portions of genetic variation than geography between non-introgressed lineages (i.e., between R. oldhamii and other lineages). However, the Mantel and partial Mantel tests and the multiple matrix regression with randomization found that isolation-by-distance played a more important role than isolation-by-environment (IBE) in contributing to genetic variation in most between lineage comparisons. Nevertheless, strong IBE was found when compared between non-introgressed lineages of R. oldhamii and R. rubropilosum, suggesting post-speciation ecological divergence. Several environmental variables, including annual mean temperature, aspect, isothermality, seasonal precipitation, slope, and soil pH, could be important ecological drivers involved in reproductive isolation between R. oldhamii and non-R. oldhamii species within the Tsutsusi subgenus.  相似文献
