Summary In the ant Camponotus mus the eclosion of imagines from the cocoons was shown to be controlled by nurse workers, which broke the cocoons and assisted the callows to energe. Short-term colony prey deprivation modified the eclosion-help behavior resulting in a delay in cocoon opening times. During long-term prey deprivation, no new cocoons were spun; the starved larvae grew and pupated when prey was again available. These findings as a colony strategy adapted to the changing condition of prey availabitity in a temperate habitat are discussed.  相似文献

Once inseminated, ant queens rapidly shed their wings and start to lay eggs. Here we test whether there is a causal link between dealation and oviposition in the ant Lasius niger. We show that artificially dealated virgin queens start to lay eggs shortly after wing removal, whereas winged virgin queens hardly ever lay eggs. Dealate virgins do, however, produce fewer eggs than mated queens. These findings indicate that dealation does induce egg-laying, and that other factors, such as mating and/or insemination, further stimulate oviposition under natural conditions. The chemical composition and behavioural activities of the secretions of the Dufour glands of Myrmica rugulosa and M. schencki have been studied, as part of an extended study on Myrmica ants. Chemically, the Dufour gland of M. rugulosa is filled with a mixture of hydrocarbons dominated by straight chain alkanes and alkenes with 13 to 19 carbon atoms, as found in M. rubra. Significant quantities of (Z,E)-α-farnesene and its homologues, homofarnesene and bishomofarnesene, are also present. In M. schencki, the major compounds present are homofarnesene and bishomofarnesene. In both species, the very volatile portion of the Dufour gland secretion is identical to that analysed in M. rubra. From an ethological point of view, this very volatile part is efficient in attracting workers at a distance (6 to 8 cm) and in decreasing their wandering movements. No specificity was observed when performing cross-tests with Dufour glands freshly isolated from workers of other Myrmica species, but obvious specificities were detected when testing the less volatile part of the Dufour glands' contents, known to be used for marking newly discovered areas.  相似文献

The taxonomy of Cataglyphis ants has many unsolved problems and chemotaxonomy can provide additional insight for their resolution. We describe here the chemical content of the postpharyngeal and Dufour glands of three Cataglyphis ant species: C. viaticus, C. mauritanicus from Morocco and for the first time a Sub-Saharan Cataglyphis, C. sp. (BF) from Burkina Faso. These three species are very distinct chemically with respect to both the postpharyngeal and Dufour glands. Methyl-alkenes, rare in ants, are characteristic of C. sp. (BF) postpharyngeal glands. A comparison with C. bicolor from Tunisia indicated that C. sp. (BF) can be included into the bicolor group with C. viaticus. We suggest that the content of the Dufour gland is a better phylogenetic indicator than the content of the postpharyngeal gland.  相似文献

Summary Phylogenetic analysis based on sequence data of the mitochondrial COI gene confirms the species status of the recently described Lasius austriacus. The five haplotypes of L. austriacus do not cluster according to their geographic origin, indicating a recent gene flow among the populations. The molecular data corroborate the morphology based hypothesis that L. austriacus belongs to the Lasius (Lasius s.str.) brunneus group. The invasive species Lasius neglectus forms a sister taxon with L. turcicus, both next related to L. austriacus. Other phylogenetic relationships within the genus Lasius are in accordance with morphological data.First data on the bionomics of L. austriacus are discussed in context with its phylogenetic position. Based on gyne and male morphology, excavations of nests, pitfall trapping and observations in formicaries, we hypothesize that L. austriacus is a mainly hypogaeic, monogynous species with nuptial flight. These are characters of the Lasius brunneus group in general, except the polygynous-polycalic, intranidally copulating L. neglectus. Aggression tests, however, revealed non-aggressive behaviour (antennation) between separated L. austriacus populations, but pronounced interspecific aggression against L. neglectus. This confirms the species status of L. austriacus and indicates a reduced level of intraspecific aggression, similar to L. neglectus. The status of L. austriacus as a native species in Central Europe is confirmed.Received 10 February 2003; revised 24 June 2003; accepted 23 July 2003.  相似文献

Discriminating between group members and strangers is a key feature of social life. Nestmate recognition is very effective in social insects and is manifested by aggression and rejection of alien individuals, which are prohibited to enter the nest. Nestmate recognition is based on the quantitative variation in cuticular hydrocarbons, which can include heritable cues from the workers, as well as acquired cues from the environment or queen-derived cues. We tracked the profile of six colonies of the ant Camponotus aethiops for a year under homogeneous laboratory conditions. We performed chemical and behavioral analyses. We show that nestmate recognition was not impaired by constant environment, even though cuticular hydrocarbon profiles changed over time and were slightly converging among colonies. Linear hydrocarbons increased over time, especially in queenless colonies, but appeared to have weak diagnostic power between colonies. The presence of a queen had little influence on nestmate discrimination abilities. Our results suggest that heritable cues of workers are the dominant factor influencing nestmate discrimination in these carpenter ants and highlight the importance of colony kin structure for the evolution of eusociality.  相似文献

Summary The spatial specialization inLasius fuliginosus was investigated in the field by a mass-marking of foragers with colors. In the spring, summer and autumn, foragers exhibit a high degree of persistence, with coefficients of fidelity between 83 and 96%, in using a particular foraging trail, in visiting a particular tree or shrub housing aphid colonies, and even micro-sites like a particular branch. A high degree of fidelity to particular temporary hunting ground areas has also been shown. Trail and aphid site fidelity persist for at least 1 to 3 months and are preserved through the hibernation period (about 5 months). However, in early spring, a period during which food sources are scarce, trail fidelity is lower (coefficient of fidelity: 57%).Spatial specialization develops quickly in foragers recruited to a new permanent food source. Once acquired, the specialization is not rigid since specialized honeydew collectors can shift from a no more rewarding aphid site to other aphid sites of the same trail on which they develop a secondary specialization. The ecological and behavioral aspects of the spatial specialization inL. fuliginosus are discussed with reference to the resource structure of the habitat.  相似文献

Summary 1) When a thermal gradient (20–40° C) was established along a laboratory nest, Camponotus mus nurse workers showed a photoperiodic circadian rhythm of temperature preferences for brood rearing. Two different temperatures were daily selected to translocate the brood, i.e. 30.8° C selected at the middle of the photophase, and 27.5° C selected during the scotophase, 8 h later. 2) The daily temperature response of nurse workers consisted of paired high and low-temperature translocations, with a 8 hs-interval in between: high-temperature translocation was shown to be entrained by the photophase length, whereas low-temperature translocation was shown to be dependent on the precedent one. 3) Prey deprivation to the colony modified the brood transport behaviors resulting in translocations of only cocoons and large (ripe) larvae, stages in which the pupation processes are triggered. Small larvae and eggs remained located at 27.5° C. 4) Evaluation of pupa developmental time as well as percentage of pupa mortality at different temperature regimes allowed to construct an efficiency index relating pupa survival and cocoon developmental time. In the range of temperatures selected by nurses, the index reached its maximal values. 5) The ecological significance of these results is discussed.  相似文献

Summary Polyethism is a well-known phenomenon in social insects. How this phenomenon influences interactions among individuals, the spatial distribution in the nest is, on the other hand, very rarely documented. Therefore, we conducted experiments on the ant Lasius niger to observe the influence of polyethism on aggregation, by distinguishing two groups of ants: the brood-tenders and the foragers. We show a great difference in their self aggregation level. Brood-tenders are characterized by a rapid and dense gathering in one main stable cluster while foragers gather in several small unstable clusters. We show experimentally and verify with a model that this difference in behaviour is based on a smaller probability of leaving a cluster for the brood-tenders. Aggregation in the mixed case (groups composed of brood-tenders and foragers) is very close to that of the pure forager case, showing a decrease in the level of aggregation of the brood-tenders respecting to the pure group of brood-tenders. Nevertheless, experimental results supported by the results of the model, show that ants do not change their own behaviour when the two groups are together. Therefore, the decrease of the aggregation of brood-tenders in the mixed case can be explained by a difference in the dynamics between brood-tenders and foragers.Received 9 May 2003; revised 26 August 2003; accepted 1 September 2003.  相似文献

Summary In ants, aggregation is mainly based on the attraction between individuals. We confirmed the existence of ground marking in Lasius niger and demonstrated its influence on the aggregative behaviour of ants: the place of the gathering is leading by the existence of a ground marking which favours clustering by increasing the rate of the process but does not change the aggregation level. This factor could play a role in the choice of a new nest site and in the spatial distribution of ants inside the nest. This marking, presuming to have a long duration, could represent an external memory which could play an important role in various situations such as the choice of new nest or the reorganisation of ants after a disturbance.Received 23 July 2003; revised 16 December 2003; accepted 19 December 2003.  相似文献

Summary The behaviour of adultHomoeusa acuminata on trails of its hostLasius fuliginosus was investigated both in the field and in the laboratory. The beetles were active from May to September, accurately following the foraging trails of their hosts up to 20 metres from the nest. Most of the time, they were ignored by the ants, but if attacked they raised their abdomen as a possible appeasement or defensive behaviour. On trails the beetles most probably act as food robbers, feeding on prey collected by ants. The following method, called stowaway behaviour, was used by the beetles: when a beetle encountered an ant carrying a prey back to the nest it jumped on the prey, probably feeding on it while being transported.Laboratory experiments on circular artificial trails demonstrated thatH. acuminata follows a water extract of hindguts of the ants, the source of the trail pheromone. Both beetles and ants responded to an artificial trail of 0.03 hindgut equivalent per cm, but the mean distance followed by the beetles was about twelve times higher than that covered by the ants themselves. In contrast, experiments with solutions of the six fatty acids reported as the active components of the trail pheromone showed that the beetles did not respond at all, and that the ants only respond to the fatty acids at a very high concentration.  相似文献

It is well known that ants can use cuticular hydrocarbons (CHCs) as a specific recognition cue. Most previous studies addressed the perception of CHCs occurring on the cuticle. However, the presence of CHCs in the environment (e.g., on the substrate) and the role of these compounds as a signal cue are less clear.  相似文献

Summary The trail following behaviour of the adult myrmecophilous beetleHomoeusa acuminata on the foraging trails on the host antLasius fuliginosus was examined in June and all the observed behaviours were quantified. The beetle appears as a food robber, using the stowaway behaviour which consists of attaching itself to prey transported by ants to the nest. Foraging trails are also used by the beetles as a meeting place for mating. However, the beetle does not enter into the nest and appears as a symbiont poorly integrated in the social life of its host.  相似文献

Summary Larvae and pupae of lycaenid butteflies are often associated with ants: this is usually a mutualism in which ants guard the lycaenids from natural enemies, and the lycaenid larvae and pupae provide sugars and amino acids for the ants. A possible consequence of the interaction is spatially correlated ant and lycaenid distributions, but the phenomenon is poorly documented. We examined the lycaenid Plebejus argus, which is tended by Lasius ants. Within habitat patches, P. argus eggs, larvae and pupae were all spatially associated with Lasius. On a larger scale, the densities of butterflies in different habitat patches and populations, and whether the butterfly was present or not, were correlated with Lasius ant densities. The association of P. argus with Lasius ants is consistent among populations, and occurs at several spatial scales. Other aspects of the ecology of P. argus are more variable.  相似文献

Four Old World species of Pheidole ants contain different mixtures of farnesene-type hydrocarbons in their poison apparatus, and the mixture is different between the minor and major workers within a species. A bishomofarnesene (C17H28) provides approximately half of the secretion of the Dufour glands of minor workers of Pheidole pallidula. (Z,E)-α-Farnesene constituted 96% of the Dufour secretion of major workers of P. pallidula, but only 20% of that of minors. The Dufour glands of minor workers of Pheidole sinaitica contain a mixture of farnesene homologues with (Z,E)-α-farnesene and the bishomofarnesene also found in P. pallidula predominant. The mixture in major workers was similar but had, in addition, a small amount of (E)-β-farnesene. The Dufour glands of Pheidole teneriffana minors contain chiefly the same bishomofarnesene found in P. pallidula and P. sinaitica while major workers contain (Z,E)-α-farnesene. Pheidole megacephala minor workers contained small amounts of eight farnesenes, while major workers contained essentially no farnesenes. The poison glands of minor workers of P. pallidula contain 3-ethyl-2,5-dimethylpyrazine. No pyrazine compounds were found in the major workers of P. pallidula or the minor workers of P. sinaitica. The poison glands of the major workers of P. sinaitica contained larger amounts of tetra-substituted pyrazines. No pyrazines were found in the poison reservoirs of major or minor workers of P. teneriffana or P. megacephala.  相似文献

In social insects, interactions among individuals are important in colony organisation because they can be used in decision making. During trophallaxis in ants, antennal and foreleg contacts between both partners are established. It has been suggested that a modulatory communication channel could be involved in such contacts, but it remains undemonstrated. The aim of this work was to find variables plausible to be encoded in such contacts and quantify the consequent changes in the tactile stimulation the food-donor ant receives. We recorded nectar transference between pairs of workers in experimental arenas once one of them had returned from collecting sucrose solution (15 or 40%w/w), with different situations of colony’s sugar deprivation. The frequency of antennal strokes that the food-donor ant received on her head depended on both the colony’s sugar-deprivation and the concentration, the latter showed differences within 3–5 deprivation days. Antennal and foreleg movements of the food-receiver increase with increasing level of colony’s carbohydrate deprivation, as well as with increasing concentration of the transferred food. Not only does this study reopen an interesting question, but it gives evidence that variables related to the appetitive context are indeed encoded in the tactile stimulation during the trophallaxis as well. Consequently, they have the effective potentiality to play a communicational role in the organization of colony activities. Abstract. Ant colonies experience continuous shifts in worker populations, which may affect odour composition in the nest. A major question regarding the dynamics of gestalt formation is that of the speed at which the scent of a new individual will be incorporated into the gestalt. It is predicted from the gestalt model of colony odour that workers have to exchange recognition cues continuously to maintain themselves within the gestalt and become well integrated within their colony. Using radioactive tracers the rates of transfer were measured between a labelled donor ant and one or 10 recipient ants, as a close approximation to the within-nest situation. The labelled hydrocarbons were first transferred to a small number of individuals and progressively to all the individuals of the group so that the distribution of hydrocarbon transfer rate approached a normal distribution. Furthermore, in Camponotus fellah Dalla Torre, which performs trophallaxis, homogeneity was reached more rapidly than in Aphaenogaster senilis Mayr, which does not show this behaviour. In the latter species, the gestalt seems to be maintained mainly by allogrooming. These experiments were accompanied by behavioural observations to ascertain the respective importance of trophallaxis and allogrooming in the behavioural time-budget of the ants. In A. senilis , allogrooming was more frequent than in ants that trophallax, which corroborates the role of allogrooming in the establishment of the gestalt in this species.  相似文献

Using monogynous and polygynous colonies of the fire ant, Solenopsis invicta Buren, we developed methodology to determine which behavioural subcaste of workers was responsible for executing unfamiliar queens that were introduced to them. Separation of subcastes and introduction of queens to each of these separately was partly effective, but more accurate results were obtained by removing workers that were in the act of executing queens, marking them individually, and returning them to the colony. Their subsequent behaviour was then recorded to determine whether they behaved like nurses, reserves, or foragers. The results showed that foragers are dominant in execution behaviour and that all morphological subcastes (minors, medias, and majors) are involved. This methodology may be applied to other social insect species.
