Abstract

Salicylic acid (SA) treatment reduces the damaging action by water deficit on growth and accelerates a restoration of growth processes. The aim of the present work was to study the physiological and biochemical alteration induced by SA in lemongrass plants under stress conditions. Therefore, a pot culture experiment was conducted to test whether SA application at concentration of (10?5 M) through foliar spray could protect lemongrass (Cymbopogon flexuosus Steud. Wats.) varieties (Neema and Krishna), subjected to drought stress on the basis of growth parameters and biochemical constituents, proline metabolism and quality attributes including citral content. The treatments were as follows: (i) 100% FC + 0 SA; (ii) 75% FC + 0 SA; (iii) 50% FC + 0 SA; (iv) 75% FC + 10?5 M SA; and (v) 50% FC + 10?5 M SA. The growth parameters were significantly reduced under the applied water stress levels; however, foliar application of salicylic acid (10?5 M) improved the growth parameters in stress-affected plants. The plants under water stress exhibited a significant increase in activities of nitrate reductase and carbonic anhydrase, and electrolyte leakage, proline content, free amino acid and in PEP carboxylase activity. Content and yield of essential oil also significantly decreased in plants that faced water stress. Thus, it was concluded that variety Neema is the more tolerant variety as compared to Krishna on the basis of content and oil yield and well adapted to drought stress conditions.  相似文献

This study was planned to enhance the growth and productivity of common bean plants (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) grown under different water stress level by using different microorganisms as bio-fertilizer agents. Water stress is a international problem that effects on morphological, functional and chemical processes of plants occasioning in altering growth, yield and water relations of economic plants like common bean plants. The interaction effect between water stress (WW as recommended irrigation after 6 days, WS1 after 12 days and WS2 after 18 days) and inoculation with different microorganisms [AMF (Glomus mosseae) and endophytic bacteria, (Bacillus amyloliquefaciens)] used alone or in mixed was examined on the development and productivity of common bean plants. Mutual application of AMF and endophytic bacteria significantly increased the average values of most of growth, water relations (photosynthetic rate, transpiration rate and stomatal conductance) and yield parameters of common bean plants grown at WS1 and WS2 comparing with non-colonized plants. In this connection, colonization with AMF and endophytic bacteria with WS1 are the greater pods number, pod length, pods weight, 100 seeds weight, Yield by ton /Fed and water-use efficiency (WUE) by ton/ m3 than other treatments. Common bean yielded seeds had significantly increased nutrients content (nitrogen, potassium, phosphorus, magnesium and calcium), vitamin B1, Folic acid, crude protein and crude fibers at AMF + endophytic bacteria under second water stress (WS1) when compared to other treatments.  相似文献

Salicylic acid (SA) and polyamines (PA) are widely used to overcome various abiotic stresses including salt (NaCl) stress in plants. In the present investigation, co-application efficacies of SA and PA on the salt stress (200 mM NaCl) were evaluated in Lycopersicon esculentum. After transplantation, at 10-d stage, seedlings were exposed to NaCl through soil and then allowed to grow till 30-d stage. At 31-d stage of growth, plants were sprayed with double distilled water (control) or spermidine (1.0 mM) and/or SA (10–5 M). The salt stress significantly reduced the growth, gas-exchange parameters, but increased antioxidant enzymes and proline content in the leaves. Moreover, the loss caused by salt stress was successfully restored by the following treatment of spermidine and SA.  相似文献

Abstract

Trace metal contamination of soil is an increasing problem. Organic acid application can restore trace metal elements such as cadmium (Cd) in contaminated soil. Changbai larch (Larix olgensis A. Henry) is an economically important forestry species in northeast China; however, growth is inhibited by severe Cd contamination. We investigated the effects of different concentrations of exogenous succinic acid (SA) on Cd tolerance and physiological and morphological toxicity in L. olgensis seedlings. Seedlings were planted in pots containing Cd-contaminated or uncontaminated Haplic Cambisol. Seedlings in Cd-contaminated soil were treated daily with SA solution at 0, 0.04, 0.2, 1.0, and 2.0?mmol kg?1 of soil for 10, 20 or 30?days. Cd treatment induced seedling damage and significantly increased the relative conductivity and malondialdehyde content of the leaves, inhibiting soluble protein and proline contents, superoxide dismutase and peroxidase activity, chlorophyl fluorescence and pigment content. Decreases in the length, surface area, volume of roots and leaves, and specific root length were also observed. Effects increased in control plants with time. SA treatment also reduced the Cd content of the fine roots and leaves and Mg, K, and Ca contents. Moreover, plant growth was significantly promoted and damage was reversed, especially at 5.0 and 10.0?mmol?L?1 SA for 30?days. SA therefore alleviated Cd-induced injury, improving tolerance to Cd stress. SA application combined with afforestation could therefore help restore Cd-contaminated soil in northeast China. Further studies aimed at determining the detoxification mechanism of L. olgensis seedlings are now required.  相似文献

Elevated [CO2] is suggested to mitigate the negative effects of water stress in plants; however responses vary among species. Fructans are recognised as protective compounds against drought and other stresses, as well as having a role as reserve carbohydrates. We analysed the combined effects of elevated [CO2] and water deficit on fructan metabolism in the Cerrado species Viguiera discolor Baker. Plants were cultivated for 18 days in open‐top chambers (OTC) under ambient (~380 ppm), and high (~760 ppm) [CO2]. In each OTC, plants were submitted to three treatments: (i) daily watering (control), (ii) withholding water (WS) for 18 days and (iii) re‐watering (RW) on day 11. Analyses were performed at time 0 and days 5, 8, 11, 15 and 18. High [CO2] increased photosynthesis in control plants and increased water use efficiency in WS plants. The decline in soil water content was more distinct in WS 760 (WS under 760 ppm), although the leaf and tuberous root water status was similar to WS 380 plants (WS under 380 ppm). Regarding fructan active enzymes, 1‐SST activity decreased in WS plants in both CO2 concentrations, a result consistent with the decline in photosynthesis and, consequently, in substrate availability. Under WS and both [CO2] treatments, 1‐FFT and 1‐FEH seemed to act in combination to generate osmotically active compounds and thus overcome water deficit. The proportion of hexoses to sucrose, 1‐kestose and nystose (SKN) was higher in WS plants. In WS 760, this increase was higher than in WS 380, and was not accompanied by decreases in SKN at the beginning of the treatment, as observed in WS 380 plants. These results suggest that the higher [CO2] in the atmosphere contributed to maintain, for a longer period, the pool of hexoses and of low DP fructans, favouring the maintenance of the water status and plant survival under drought.  相似文献

Genotype differences in gas exchange during ontogeny and water stress responses at the vegetative and pollination stages were evaluated in four lines of Phaseolus vulgaris L. In the cultivar Carioca, net photosynthetic rate ( A ) and stomatal conductance ( g s) were lower at the vegetative stage (20 days after sowing [DAS]) and maximum at the pollination stage (39 DAS), followed by a decrease at the flowering stage (46 DAS) and a dramatic fall at the grain-filling stage (60 DAS). Among the lines studied, the stomata of A320 closed faster than those of the other lines when water stress occurred at 20 or 39 DAS. The cultivar SC-90298823 had greater stomatal conductance at 39 DAS and a higher photosynthetic level than the other lines. Stomata of Ouro negro remained partially open during the water stress at the pollination stage (39 DAS) and supported a positive net photosynthetic rate ( A ). Differences were also found between lines in intrinsic water use efficiency (IWUE) at 39 DAS, but not at 20 DAS. The possibility of using IWUE at the pollination stage is discussed, in view of its use as one of the parameters for a drought tolerance breeding program in bean lines.  相似文献

Abstract

The genus Verbascum L. (Scrophulariaceae) includes medicinal plants, which have several bioactive compounds especially saponins. The possible recovery ability of Verbascum sinuatum from drought stress conditions was assessed by using salicylic acid (SA), methyl jasmonate (MJA) and titanium dioxide nanoparticles (TiO2NPs) as plant growth regulators (PGRs) in liquid culture media. Thirty days-old plants were exposed to different concentrations of polyethylene glycol (PEG-6000) for creating artificial drought conditions (0, ?0.3, and ?0.6?MPa osmotic potential) and also treated with 200?µM methyl jasmonate (MJA), 100?µM salicylic acid (SA) and 20?ppm TiO2 nanoparticles (TiO2NPs). Results showed that the growth parameters and the content of photosynthetic pigments decreased at higher drought level (?0.6?MPa). However, SA and TiO2NPs alleviated the adverse effects of drought stress by increasing water stress tolerance through promotion of enzymatic and nonenzymatic antioxidant defense systems. MJA negatively affected the growth parameters and increased the content of malondialdehyde (MDA), hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and total saponin and also the activity of peroxidase (POD) and polyphenol oxidase (PPO). Based on the results obtained from this study, the recovery treatments mainly affected the defense-related metabolism in Verbasum sinuatum plants.  相似文献

The roles of plant growth regulators (PGRs) in plants are well documented. However, there is a little information regarding their roles in alleviating salt stress in plants, particularly peppermint. This necessitated the evaluation of the efficiency of three selected PGRs in counteracting the ill effect of salt stress by conducting a pot experiment on peppermint (Lamiaceae). Three uniform size suckers were transplanted in each pot containing proper nutrients. Thirty day old plants were subjected to 4 levels of salinity, viz. 0, 50, 100 or 150 mM NaCl. Salt stress was given at 30 days after their transplantation (DAT). Plants were sprayed twice, i.e., at 60 and 75 DAT with 10?6 M each of gibberellic acid (GA3), salicylic acid (SA) or triacontanol (Tria). The sampling was made at 100 DAT and harvesting at 120 DAT. The graded levels of salinity decreased growth, photosynthesis, carbonic anhydrase (CA) activity, NPK content, peltate glandular trichome (PGT) density, essential oil (EO) and menthol content and herb, EO and menthol yield, but increased catalase (CAT), peroxidase (POX) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) activities and proline content linearly. Spray of PGRs particularly SA improved all parameters under both salt and salt free conditions. The maximum values for yields of herb, EO and menthol were noted with 0 mM NaCl?×?SA. However, antioxidants, proline content, PGT density and EO content were found to be maximum with 150 mM NaCl?×?SA.  相似文献

Abiotic stress causes extensive loss to agricultural yield production worldwide. Salt stress is one of them crucial factor which leads to decreased the agricultural production through detrimental effect on growth and development of crops. In our study, we examined the effect of a defense growth substance, salicylic acid (SA 1 mM) on mature vegetative (60 Days after sowing) and flowering (80 DAS) stage of Pusa Sadabahar (PS) variety of Capsicum annuum L. plants gown under different concentrations of NaCl (25, 50, 75, 100 and 150 mM) and maintained in identical sets in pots during the whole experiment. Physiological studies indicated that increase in root & shoot length, fresh & dry weight, number of branches per plant, and yield (number of fruits per plant) under salt + SA treatment. Biochemical studies, enzymatic antioxidants like CAT, POX, and non-enzymatic antioxidant such as ascorbic acid (AsA content), carotenoids, phenolics, besides other defense compounds like proline, protein, chlorophyll contents were studied at 10 days after treatment at the mature vegetative and flowering stage. The addition of SA led to lowering of in general, all studied parameters in the mature vegetative stage but increased the same during the flowering stage, especially in the presence of NaCl; although the control I (without SA and NaCl) remained lower in value than control II (with SA, without NaCl). Interestingly, total phenolics were higher in control I (without SA or NaCl) whereas chlorophylls were higher in treatments with SA and NaCl. Thus, physiological concentration of SA (1 mM) appears to be significantly effective against salt stress during the flowering stage. In addition, during the mature vegetative stage, however, proline accumulates in SA treated sets, to help in developing NaCl-induced drought stress tolerance.  相似文献

Salicylic acid (SA) is one of the important signal molecules modulating plant responses to environmental stress. In this study, the effects of exogenous SA on leaf rolling, one of drought avoidance mechanisms, and antioxidant system were investigated in Ctenanthe setosa during long term drought stress. The plants were subjected to 38-day drought period and they were treated with or without SA (10−6 M) on the 25th, 27th and 29th days of the period. Leaf samples were harvested on the 30th, 34th and 38th days. Some antioxidant enzyme activities (superoxide dismutase, catalase, ascorbate peroxidase, dehydroascorbate reductase, monodehydroascorbate reductase, glutathione reductase), reactive oxygen species (hydrogen peroxide and superoxide) and lipid peroxidation were determined during the drought period. Treatment with SA prevented water loss and delayed leaf rolling in comparison with control leaves. Exogenous SA induced all antioxidant enzyme activities more than control leaves during the drought. Ascorbate and glutathione, α-tocopherol, carotenoid and endogenous SA level were induced by the SA treatment. Levels of reactive oxygen species were higher in SA treated plants than control ones on the 34th day. Their levels on the 38th day, however, fastly decreased in SA treated plants. SA treatment prevented lipid peroxidation while the peroxidation increased in control plants. The results showed that exogenous SA can alleviate the damaging effect of long term drought stress by decreasing water loss and inducing the antioxidant system in the plant having leaf rolling, alternative protection mechanism to drought.  相似文献

This study was conducted to investigate the influence of salicylic acid (SA) on the growth and changes of nucleic acids, protein, photosynthetic pigments, sugar content and photosynthesis levels in the green alga Chlorella vulgaris Beijerinck (Chlorophyceae). The most significant changes in the content of nucleic acids and proteins was observed at the concentration 10−4 M SA between 8 and 12 day of cultivation. This concentration of SA increased the number of cells (about 40 %) and content of proteins (about 60 %) and its secretion to the medium. The slight stimulation of protein secretion occurred on the 12th day of cultivation at concentration 10−4 M, while in the range of 10−5 M to 10−6 M the protein secretion was inhibited. SA also stimulated the content of nucleic acids, especially RNA by 20–60 %, compared with the control. The most stimulating influence upon the contents of chlorophylls a and b (50–70 %), total carotenoids (25–57 %), sugar (27–41 %) and intensity of net photosynthesis (18–33 %) was found at 10−4 M of SA. At the concentration of 10−6 M SA the slight inhibition of growth and biochemical activity of the algae was recorded at the first days of cultivation.  相似文献

Effect of salinity (15, 25, 35, 45, and 55‰) on growth, biochemical composition, and lipid productivity of Nannochloropsis oculata CS 179 was investigated under controlled cultivation in a 19‐day study. The results demonstrate that the dry biomass of N. oculata was the highest at a salinity of 25‰ among the treatments in the first 10‐day cultivation (P<0.05). During days 14–19 (stage III), the dry biomass productivity was the highest at a salinity of 35‰ (P<0.05). The algae had the highest chlorophyll a content (26.47 mg g?1) at 25‰ in stage I, and it decreased continuously at stage III. Protein content (as% of dry biomass) of algae reached the highest value of 42.25 ± 2.10% at 15‰, and the lipid content was the highest of 32.11 ± 1.30% of dry biomass at 25‰. However, the lipid productivity of these algae was the highest at 35‰ (64.71 mg L?1 d?1; P<0.001). C16 series content was the highest among the total fatty acid methyl esters (FAME), and eicosapentaenoic acid C20:5n‐3 (EPA) content was high at the low salinity. Fatty acid profiles of N. oculata varied significantly under different salinities.  相似文献

Gibberellic acid improves water deficit tolerance in maize plants   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The combination effects of water stress and gibberellic acid (GA3) on physiological attributes and nutritional status of maize (Zea mays L. cv., DK 647 F1) were studied in a pot experiment. Maize plants were grown in the control (well watered WW) and water stress subjected to treated both water stress and two concentrations of gibberellic acid (GA3 25 mg L−1, 50 mg L−1). WS was imposed by maintaining the moisture level equivalent to 50 % pot capacity whereas the WW pots were maintained at full pot capacity. Water stress reduced the total dry weight, chlorophyll concentration, and leaf relative water content (RWC), but it increased proline accumulation and electrolyte leakage in maize plants and appears to affect shoots more than roots. Both concentrations of GA3 (25 and 50 mg L−1) largely enhanced the above physiological parameters to levels similar to control. WS reduced leaf Ca2+ and K+ concentrations, but exogenous application of GA3 increased those nutrient levels similar or close to control. Exogenous application of GA3 improved the water stress tolerance in maize plants by maintaining membrane permeability, enhancing chlorophyll concentration, leaf relative water content (LRWC) and some macro-nutrient concentrations in leaves.  相似文献

Water stress induced an increase in endogenous concentrations of ABA in Lavandula stoechas L. plants to 13100 pmol ABA g–1 FW, which may contribute to the maintenance of water relations between the second and the third day of water stress treatment. After the third day, a sharp decrease in ABA levels was observed to 2630 pmol ABA g–1 FW, together with a decrease in water content and water potential and a loss of plant response to water stress. Water deficit did not induce an increase in endogenous ABA concentration, which remained at 514 pmol ABA g–1 FW in Rosmarinus officinalis L., which is more sclerophyllous than L. stoechas. Nevertheless, the relative water content of Rosmarinus officinalis L. after seven days of water stress decreased more than 40% and reached values of –3.2 MPa. R. officinalis showed lower levels of ABA, but significantly higher levels of IAA and ZR than L. stoechas (4 times and 6 times respectively in well watered-plants). The increase in ABA levels is not a common mechanism in these two Mediterranean shrubs which survive under water stress conditions.Abbreviations ABA abscisic acid - d days of water stress treatment - DW dry weight - FW fresh weight - IAA indole-3-acetic acid - RP Reversed Phase - RWC relative water content - TW turgid weight - WC water content - ZR zeatin riboside - water potential  相似文献

Water deficit is a major yield‐limiting factor for many crops, and improving the root system has been proposed as a promising breeding strategy, although not in groundnut (Arachis hypogaea L.). The present work was carried out mainly to assess how root traits are influenced under water stress in groundnut, whether transgenics can alter root traits, and whether putative changes lead to water extraction differences. Several transgenic events, transformed with DREB1A driven by the rd29 promoter, along with wild‐type JL24, were tested in a lysimeter system that mimics field conditions under both water stress (WS) and well‐watered (WW) conditions. The WS treatment increased the maximum rooting depth, although the increase was limited to about 20% in JL24, compared to 50% in RD11. The root dry weight followed a similar trend. Consequently, the root dry weight and length density of transgenics was higher in layers below 100‐cm depth (Exp. 1) and below 30 cm (Exp. 2). The root diameter was unchanged under WS treatment, except a slight increase in the 60–90‐cm layer. The root diameter increased below 60 cm in both treatments. In the WW treatment, total water extraction of RD33 was higher than in JL24 and other transgenic events, and somewhat lower in RD11 than in JL24. In the WS treatment, water extraction of RD2, RD11 and RD33 was higher than in JL24. These water extraction differences were mostly apparent in the initial 21 days after treatment imposition and were well related to root length density in the 30–60‐cm layer (R2 = 0.68), but not to average root length density. In conclusion, water stress promotes rooting growth more strongly in transgenic events than in the wild type, especially in deep soil layers, and this leads to increased water extraction. This opens an avenue for tapping these characteristics toward the improvement of drought adaptation in deep soil conditions, and toward a better understanding of genes involved in rooting in groundnut.

Abstract

Soil salinity is one of the major factors responsible for the low productivity of crop plants and has become an increasing threat for agriculture. In this context, the selection of tolerant genotype/s may be one of the remedies. Keeping this in view, the effect of NaCl (0–120 mM) stress on shoot length (SL) plant?1, area (A) leaf?1, leaf area index (LAI), fresh weight (FW) and dry weight (DW) plant?1, stomatal conductance (gs), net photosynthetic rate (P N), total chlorophyll (Chl) content, malondialdehyde (MDA) content, sensitivity rate index (SRI), leaf- nitrogen (N), potassium (K) and sodium (Na) content, leaf-K/Na ratio, nitrate reductase (NR: EC.1.6.6.1) and ATP-sulphurylase (ATP-S: EC.2.7.7.4) activities and proline (Pro) and glycinebetaine (GB) content of ten genotypes of Brassica juncea L. was studied at 55 and 65 days after sowing (DAS). NaCl treatments decreased all the above parameters, except Pro, GB, MDA, Na and SRI at both stages. Salt stress resulted in accumulation of Pro and GB, in all genotypes. The magnitude of increase in both osmolytes (Pro and GB) was higher in genotype G8 than the other genotypes. Salt stress increased MDA and Na content while it decreased Chl, N and K content and K/Na ratio, Chl content, NR and ATP-S activities in all genotypes. But the magnitude of increase in MDA and Na content and decrease in SL plant?1, A leaf?1, LAI, P N, gs, Chl content and NR and ATP-S activities in genotype G8 was more than that of other genotypes. These results suggest that the salt-tolerant genotype may have better osmotic adjustment and protection from free radicals by increasing the accumulation of Pro and GB content with overproduction of N and K and higher K/Na, NR and ATP-S activities under salinity stress.  相似文献

Remarkable changes were observed in chlorophyll (Chl) (a+b), carotenoids (Car), and protein content of leaves and fluorescence emission, polarisation, excitation energy transfer, lipid peroxidation and DCPIP photoreduction activity in isolated chloroplasts of wheat leaves grown under moderate irradiance (MI, 15 W m−2, control) and subsequently exposed to high irradiance stress (HIS, 250 W m−2), water stress (WS, 5 % aqueous polyethylene glycol-4000 solution) and HIS+WS simultaneously, during mature and senescence phase. In the stress exposed samples the Chl, Car and protein contents and kinetics of Hill activity significantly declined. Decrease in excitation energy transfer and increase in membrane polarisation and accumulation of malondialdehyde (MDA) in chloroplasts were also observed. The effect was more pronounced when the seedlings were treated with HIS+WS simultaneously. These observations suggest additive and a possible synergetic action of HIS and WS causing faster loss of pigments and protein content, intense changes in membrane properties including photochemical function, compared to samples exposed to either of the stresses individually.  相似文献

Improving physio-biochemical traits in wheat under drought stress conditions has received more research attention in recent years for better adaptability and higher yield. In this study, we explored the potential bio-physiological mechanisms underlying improved plant growth and water use efficiency in wheat following soil application of potassium (0 and 100 kg ha?1) and seed primed salicylic acid (SA) (150 mg per L) and SA foliar application (100 mg per L) under drought stresses (100%, 60% and 30% FC). Two years' average data revealed that inducing drought stress resulted in a decrease in plant pigments content, growth traits, and plant water status however, the influence was substantially reduced with the combined application of K and SA under drought stress conditions. The SA foliar spray in combination with K had increased chlorophyll a (174% and 83%), chl b (130% and 192%), chl a + b (156% and 120), carotenoid (22% and 11%), proline contents (24% and 29%) leaf relative water content (24% and 29%) while reduced leaf WSD (17% and 20%), WRC (6% and 7%), and WUC (23% and 28%) under mild and severe drought stresses, respectively. The increase in grain yield by 41% and 37% with enhanced water use efficiency was obtained with combined foliar SA and K under mild and severe drought stress, respectively indicating its vital role in overcoming the deleterious effects of drought via regulation of osmotic and metabolic processes and stabilizes cell components. RDA analysis revealed that the studied traits were completely discriminated under severe stress than mild or no drought stress. A positive and significant association was found between plant pigments with seed yield whereas a negative and significant correlation existed between water leaf traits and plant pigments. It was concluded that both foliar SA and seed primed SA with K fertilization combat the adverse effects of drought and improved plant water status as well as growth and bio-physiological traits of wheat under drought stress conditions.  相似文献

In field experiments, the test black cumin plants were sprayed with either deionized water (control test) or 10−5 M kinetin (KIN) at 40 (vegetative stage) or 60 (flowering) days after sowing (DAS). Spraying with KIN at 40 DAS brought about maximum stimulation of all parameters, whereas spraying at 60 DAS was not much effective. All characteristics recorded at 80 DAS (shoot length, leaf number, leaf area, branch number and dry weight per plant, net photosynthetic rate, stomatal conductance and leaf chlorophyll content), were significantly enhanced by KIN application. Further, at harvest (130 DAS), capsule number per plant, seed yield per plot, and biomass yield per plot, showed a significant increase over the control traits. However, number of seeds per capsule, 1000-seed weight and harvest index remained unaffected. Published in Russian in Fiziologiya Rastenii, 2007, Vol. 54, No. 5, pp. 790–793.
