Background, Aim and Scope The objective of this life cycle assessment (LCA) study is to develop LCA models for energy systems in order to assess the potential environmental impacts that might result from meeting energy demands in buildings. The scope of the study includes LCA models of the average electricity generation mix in the USA, a natural gas combined cycle (NGCC) power plant, a solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) cogeneration system; a microturbine (MT) cogeneration system; an internal combustion engine (ICE) cogeneration system; and a gas boiler. Methods LCA is used to model energy systems and obtain the life cycle environmental indicators that might result when these systems are used to generate a unit energy output. The intended use of the LCA analysis is to investigate the operational characteristics of these systems while considering their potential environmental impacts to improve building design using a mixed integer linear programming (MILP) optimization model. Results The environmental impact categories chosen to assess the performance of the energy systems are global warming potential (GWP), acidification potential (AP), tropospheric ozone precursor potential (TOPP), and primary energy consumption (PE). These factors are obtained for the average electricity generation mix, the NGCC, the gas boiler, as well as for the cogeneration systems at different part load operation. The contribution of the major emissions to the emission factors is discussed. Discussion The analysis of the life cycle impact categories indicates that the electrical to thermal energy production ratio has a direct influence on the value of the life cycle PE consumption factors. Energy systems with high electrical to thermal ratios (such as the SOFC cogeneration systems and the NGCC power plant) have low PE consumption factors, whereas those with low electrical to thermal ratios (such as the MT cogeneration system) have high PE consumption factors. In the case of GWP, the values of the life cycle GWP obtained from the energy systems do not only depend on the efficiencies of the systems but also on the origins of emissions contributing to GWP. When evaluating the life cycle AP and TOPP, the types of fuel as well as the combustion characteristics of the energy systems are the main factors that influence the values of AP and TOPP. Conclusions An LCA study is performed to eraluate the life cycle emission factors of energy systems that can be used to meet the energy demand of buildings. Cogeneration systems produce utilizable thermal energy when used to meet a certain electrical demand which can make them an attractive alternative to conventional systems. The life cycle GWP, AP, TOPP and PE consumption factors are obtained for utility systems as well as cogeneration systems at different part load operation levels for the production of one kWh of energy output. Recommendations and Perspectives Although the emission factors vary for the different energy systems, they are not the only factors that influence the selection of the optimal system for building operations. The total efficiencies of the system play a significant part in the selection of the desirable technology. Other factors, such as the demand characteristics of a particular building, influence the selection of energy systems. The emission factors obtained from this LCA study are used as coefficients of decision variables in the formulation of an MILP to optimize the selection of energy systems based on environmental criteria by taking into consideration the system efficiencies, emission characteristics, part load operation, and building energy demands. Therefore, the emission factors should not be regarded as the only criteria for choosing the technology that could result in lower environmental impacts, but rather one of several factors that determine the selection of the optimum energy system. Vibrios are Gram-negative curved bacilli that occur naturally in marine, estuarine, and freshwater systems. Some species include human and animal pathogens, and some vibrios are necessary for natural systems, including the carbon cycle and osmoregulation. Countless in vivo and in vitro studies have examined the interactions between vibrios and their environment, including molecules, cells, whole animals, and abiotic substrates. Many studies have characterized virulence factors, attachment factors, regulatory factors, and antimicrobial resistance factors, and most of these factors impact the organism's fitness regardless of its external environment. This review aims to identify common attributes among factors that increase fitness in various environments, regardless of whether the environment is an oyster, a rabbit, a flask of immortalized mammalian cells, or a planktonic chitin particle. This review aims to summarize findings published thus far to encapsulate some of the basic similarities among the many vibrio fitness factors and how they frame our understanding of vibrio ecology. Factors representing these similarities include hemolysins, capsular polysaccharides, flagella, proteases, attachment factors, type III secretion systems, chitin binding proteins, iron acquisition systems, and colonization factors.  相似文献

The development of biocompatible, controlled release systems for macromolecules has provided the opportunity for researchers and clinicians to target and deliver, on site, biologically active factors. This advance has also facilitated the purification and characterization of a number of important biomolecules. These systems include controlled release delivery systems which release proteins through porous polymer matrices, degradable polymeric delivery systems, and modulated polymer release systems. These areas of research will be reviewed with regards to their design, release kinetics, and biocompatibilities. The utilization of these systems to release such biologically important polypeptides as growth factors (e.g., fibroblast growth factor, epidermal growth factor, transforming growth factor-B) as well as a number of important inhibitory factors (e.g., nitrosoureas, angiogenesis inhibitors) in both in vivo and in vitro studies will be discussed.  相似文献

A total of 146 East African Zebu, 41 Zebu-Hereford crosses and 24 Ayrshire-Norwegian Red Cattle crosses have been investigated with cattle red cell reagents characterizing blood factors in eleven systems. With a battery of 36 selected reagents the average number of blood factors in Zebu was 20.1 which differs significantly from the average of 12.5 in the Ayrshire crosses. Factor frequencies for the A, C and S systems and gene frequencies for the F, L, M, Z, R' and T' systems are presented. The B system factors in four Zebu bulls could be grouped into eight different phenogroups by utilizing the blood types of dam-offspring pairs.  相似文献

Passive surveillance systems are widely used to monitor diseases occurrence over wide spatial areas due to their cost-effectiveness and integration into broadly distributed healthcare systems. However, such systems are generally associated with imperfect ascertainment of disease cases and with heterogeneous capture probabilities arising from factors such as differential access to care. Augmenting passive surveillance systems with other surveillance efforts provides a way to estimate the true number of incident cases. We develop a hierarchical modeling framework for analyzing data from multiple surveillance systems that allows for individual-level covariate-dependent heterogeneous capture probabilities, and borrows information across surveillance sites to improve estimation of the true number of incident cases. Inference is carried out via a two-stage Bayesian procedure. Simulation studies illustrated superior performance of the proposed approach with respect to bias, root mean square error, and coverage compared to a model that does not borrow information across sites. We applied the proposed model to data from three surveillance systems reporting pulmonary tuberculosis (PTB) cases in a major center of ongoing transmission in China. The analysis yielded bias-corrected estimates of PTB cases from the passive system and led to the identification of risk factors associated with PTB rates, as well as factors influencing the operating characteristics of the implemented surveillance systems.  相似文献

However, several large-scale closed systems have now been built and, for the first time, actual comparisons can be made. There are major operational differences between open and closed photobioreactors and, consequently, the growth physiology of the microalgae is different between the two systems. Several of the factors governing growth can, within certain boundaries, be manipulated while others are specific to the cultivation system. Crucial factors are the optical depth, turbulence, light acclimated state of the organism, nutrient availability and metabolite accumulation. Ungulates exhibit diverse mating systems that range from monogamous pair territories to highly polygynous leks. We review mating systems and behaviors across ungulates and offer a new approach synthesizing how interacting factors may shape those mating systems. Variability exists in mating systems among and within species of ungulates and likely is affected by predation risk, availability of resources (food and mates), habitat structure, and sociality. Ungulate mating systems may be labile as a consequence of the varying strength of those interacting factors. In addition, degree of polygyny and sexual dimorphism in size are associated with the evolution of mating systems. Neither male–male combat nor paternal care, however, can completely explain differences in sexual size dimorphism for ungulates, a necessary component in understanding the development of some mating systems. Whatever the evolutionary pathway, sexual segregation limits paternal care allowing more intense male–male competition. Selection of habitat structure, because it modifies risk of predation, is a major determinant of sociality for ungulates. Likewise, ruggedness and steepness of terrain limit the types of mating systems that can occur because of limitations in group size and cohesiveness, as well as the ability of males to herd even small groups of females effectively. The quality and defensibility of resources affect mating systems, as does the defensibility of females. Population density of females also may be a critical determinant of the types of mating systems that develop. Size of groups likewise constrains the types of mating tactics that males can employ. Our aim was to use those relationships to create a broad conceptual model that predicts how various environmental and social factors interact to structure mating systems in ungulates. This model provides a useful framework for future tests of the roles of both ecological and social conditions in influencing the social systems of ungulates.  相似文献

Over the past two decades, various organizations have promoted cacao agroforestry systems as a tool for biodiversity conservation in the Bribri-Cabécar indigenous territories of Talamanca, Costa Rica. Despite these efforts, cacao production is declining and is being replaced by less diverse systems that have lower biodiversity value. Understanding the factors that influence household land use is essential in order to promote cacao agroforestry systems as a viable livelihood strategy. We incorporate elements of livelihoods analyses and socioeconomic data to examine cacao agroforestry systems as a livelihood strategy compared with other crops in Talamanca. Several factors help to explain the abandonment of cacao agroforestry systems and their conversion to other land uses. These factors include shocks and trends beyond the control of households such as crop disease and population growth and concentration, as well as structures and processes such as the shift from a subsistence to a cash-based economy, relative prices of cacao and other cash crops, and the availability of market and government support for agriculture. We argue that a livelihoods approach provides a useful framework to examine the decline of cacao agroforestry systems and generates insights on how to stem the rate of their conversion to less diverse land uses.  相似文献

Washed (1 M NH4Cl) ribosomes from Pseudomonas bathycetes, Pseudomonas fluorescens, and Escherichia coli were tested for their ability to synthesize protein or polypeptide at high pressure when used as such, when recombined with homologous initiation factors, and when recombined with heterologous initiation factors. The responses of natural messenger ribonucleic acid (MS-2)-directed systems to pressure were independent of the source of initiation factors and paralleled those of the washed ribosomes in polyuridylate-directed systems. In all cases, the responses to pressure were parallel to those obtained when unwashed ribosomes were utilized; therefore, we concluded that the initiation factors were interchangeable among these organisms, and that these factors did not play a critical role in determining the pressure responses of the protein-synthesizing systems. P. bathycetes ribosomal subunits were isolated under a variety of ionic conditions. These were tested for their ability to synthesize protein and polyphenylalanine at a variety of pressures when used in reconstituted P. bathycetes homologous systems and in hybrid systems with ribosomal subunits from E. coli and P. fluorescens. O. bathycetes 30S subunits, isolated in a buffer solution containing 0 mM NaCl and O mM KC] were functional at any pressure; those isolated in the presence of 150 mM NaCl and 0 mM KCl were functional at 1 atmosphere but barosensitive, and those isolated in the presence of O mM NaCl and 150 mM KCl retained the ion-mediated barotolerance characteristic of crude P. bathycetes ribosome preparations. The 50S subunit remained functional regardless of the method of isolation, and it had no effect on pressure sensitivity.  相似文献

1. Cell-free systems prepared from Krebs II ascites cells incubated at 45 degrees C have a much lower endogenous activity than those from cells incubated at 37 degrees C. The endogenous activity is mainly due to completion of polypeptide chains initiated in the intact cell. The low activity of the 45 degrees C system is due to a lesion in initiation in cells incubated at 45 degrees C. 2. Cell-free systems from cells incubated at 45 degrees C can translate efficiently poly (U) at 8 mM Mg2+. However, they initiate poorly on globin mRNA, indicating that these systems reflect the situation in the intact cell. 3. The lesion in globin mRNA translation in 45 degrees C systems can be overcome by addition of reticulocyte initiation factors. At saturation concentrations of factors, the response of a 45 degrees C system is restored to almost normal. 4. 45 degrees C systems from 40-S initiation complexes with methionyl tRNAfmet almost as efficiently as normal, but their ability for form 80-S complexes with globin mRNA is impaired, unless they are supplied with exogenous initiation factors.  相似文献

We propose the use of nematode generic biomasses as weighting factors for calculation of nematode community indices. Three data sets were used to calculate the indices using guild-based weighting (i.e., fixed weighting of nematode guilds) and genus-based weighting (i.e., weighting based on the nematode generic biomasses). The genus-based weighting factors were quadratically correlated with guild-based weighting factors, but the genus-based weighting factors were highly variable within each nematode guild, indicating that important information was likely missing when guild-based weighting was used. Although variation patterns of in the indices in response to management practices and land use were often similar for the two weighting systems, they sometimes differed substantially, and the specific index values frequently differed depending on which weighting system was used. In addition, the absolute values of the indices were frequently found to be different between the two weighting systems. Based on the comparison of indices from the two systems, we found that the genus-based system was complementary rather than superior to the guild-based system. It was suggested that both weighting systems should be used for the calculation of the nematode community indices in a study in order to better distinguish the treatment effects.  相似文献

Chromosomes/chromatids transport to cell division poles (chromosome segregation) and nuclear-cytoplasmic transport give way to each other during cell cycle. Disassembly and reassembly of the nuclear envelope during input or output mitosis are the critical time periods for changing one kind of transport system for the other one. The interest in the problem of relationships between nuclear-cytoplasmic transport and chromosome segregation came into view after revealing some factors involved in both transport systems. Among these factors are GTPase Ran, nuclear transport receptors and associated molecules, kinetochore proteins and proteins of nuclear pore complexes (nucleoprin, for example), spindle microtubules, microtubule motor proteins, and signal molecules. The role of all of these factors in the transport systems is not known. A decision of this problem will make it possible to determine mechanisms of both transport systems and to understand the character of evolutionary relationships between these systems.  相似文献

How bacteria overcome our defence systems Pathogenic bacteria overcome our defence systems by synthesis of virulence factors, among them toxic proteins, aggressive enzymes or deceiving surface structures. Their synthesis requires an additional recruitment of building blocks and energy. Therefore virulence factors are produced only when the target tissue has been reached. This requires collection of information about the environment with the help of specific proteins. In addition the first stages of a successful infection require presence of a sufficient number of attackers, which act like a multi‐cellular organism, producing high amounts of virulence factors that take by surprise the target tissue. The route of infection generally can be divided into: 1. surpassing the first barriers, 2. adhesion at the target tissue, 3.
