Metacercariae of Fascioloides magna were inoculated per os into selected nonruminant animals to evaluate them as laboratory hosts for this trematode. Immature F. magna were recovered from 36 of 52 guinea pigs, 6 of 15 mice, 2 of 3 rabbits, and 16 of 25 domestic swine. The parasite was not recovered from two beavers (Castor canadensis), two ferrets (Mustela putorius), one red fox (Vulpes fulva), one Shetland pony (Equus caballus) and two Rhesus monkeys (Macaca mulatta). Mortality in guinea pigs inoculated with 10 metacercariae each, occurred 56 to 116 (mean of 80) days after inoculation. Trematodes were in the liver up to 69 days after inoculation and usually free in the peritoneal cavity after 69 days after inoculation. Swine 2 weeks of age when inoculated were more susceptible to infection (5.6% trematode recovery rate) than were those inoculated at 4 weeks of age (1.9% trematode recovery rate) or 10 weeks of age (0.4% trematode recovery rate), indicating an age resistance to infection.  相似文献

The infro- and component community dynamics of digenetic trematodes in a freshwater gastropod community were examined over a 33-month period. The gastropod and trematode communities were composed of 17 and 10 species respectively. A total of 9,831 snails was collected; among them, 192 belonging to 14 species were infected by larval trematodes. The size of infected snails was significantly greater than that of healthy ones, and the increase of prevalence with size/age was interpreted as related to the increased probability of ultimately becoming parasitized. The trematode community was rich in allogenic species, but the most frequent trematode (cercariaeum) was autogenic and generalist (a range of 12 snail host species). There was a significantly positive relationship between the frequency of trematode species in the community and the number of first intermediate host species. A great temporal heterogeneity occurred in the prevalence of the snails, mainly attributed to the great temporal fluctuations of snail host populations and the variability of freshwater ecological conditions. The data on the occurrence of larval trematodes in 14 host species over the 33-month study allowed indicate a significant negative correlation between the abundance of gastropods and the prevalence of trematodes.  相似文献

Ten polymorphic loci were isolated and characterized from the intertidal New Zealand trematode Gymnophallus sp., a common parasite of the abundant local bivalve Austrovenus stutchburyi. Observed heterozygosities ranged from 0.17 to 0.96, and three to 23 alleles were detected in 24 trematode metacercariae. These loci are currently being used to investigate the molecular ecology of this species within the bivalve host.  相似文献

A long-term study of a molluscan–trematode community in the Basingstoke Canal, UK, was undertaken over the period 1970–2003 which coincided with a significant restoration program involving substantial anthropogenic changes to the canal’s ecosystem. The aim of this study was to correlate these changes with alterations in the molluscan–trematode community, focusing on fluctuations in the prevalence and species richness of the trematode population as a good indicator, in terms of biodiversity, of ecosystem health. Molluscs were sampled at four time periods (1970, 1982, 1983, 2003) and examined for trematode parasites. The molluscan population over the sampling period demonstrated a limited stability with few species being present during all time periods. During 1982 and 1983, when restoration of the sampling site was being undertaken, Lymnaea stagnalis dominated the molluscan fauna, possibly because it was best able to take advantage of the disturbed conditions, while other species such as Bithynia tentaculata were absent. In the trematode population, the prevalence and diversity of both cercarial and metacercarial infections was high in 1970 prior to the period of restoration work. However, during 1982 and 1983, the trematode community was significantly reduced with cercarial prevalence declining to less than 1%. By 2003, more than 12 years after restoration had been completed, the trematode population had shown only a modest recovery. Trematodes use a wide range of different host species for completing their life-cycles and may be used as bioindicators of ecosystem diversity and health. An interpretation of the structure of the molluscan–trematode community over the sampling period suggests that the restoration project had an initial negative effect on ecosystem health, in terms of biodiversity, but this has subsequently only shown modest signs of recovery suggesting continuing problems in ecological functioning and stability.  相似文献

The emergence or increased prevalence of various parasites may be linked to alterations in host-parasite interactions caused by environmental changes. We investigated prevalence of trematode infections in grey tree frog (Hyla versicolor) tadpoles from ponds in nonagricultural settings versus ponds adjacent to cornfields in southern Ontario. We found that agricultural activity was a significant factor in determining the percentage of tadpoles infected by 1 or more trematodes from 1 or more species (combined trematode infection). However, we found no associations between combined trematode infection and forest cover; pond size; road density; and measures of water quality, such as nitrate level and the presence of the herbicide atrazine. Although combined trematode prevalence was associated only with agricultural activity, prevalence of Alaria species showed a positive association with forest cover. This latter result probably reflects the importance of habitat suitability for the canid definitive hosts of this trematode species.  相似文献

We assessed how spatial and temporal heterogeneity and competition structure larval trematode communities in the pulmonate snail Lymnaea stagnalis . To postulate a dominance hierarchy, mark-release-recapture was used to monitor replacements of trematode species within snails over time. In addition, we sampled the trematode community in snails in different ponds in 3 consecutive years. A total of 7,623 snails (10,382 capture events) was sampled in 7 fishponds in the Jind?ich?v Hradec and T?eboň areas in South Bohemia (Czech Republic) from August 2006 to October 2008. Overall, 39% of snails were infected by a community of 14 trematode species; 7% of snails were infected with more than 1 trematode species (constituting 16 double- and 4 triple-species combinations). Results of the null-model analyses suggested that spatial heterogeneity in recruitment among ponds isolated trematode species from each other, whereas seasonal pulses in recruitment increased species interactions in some ponds. Competitive exclusion among trematodes led to a rarity of multiple infections compared to null-model expectations. Competitive relationships among trematode species were hypothesized as a dominance hierarchy based on direct evidence of replacement and invasion and on indirect evidence. Seven top dominant species with putatively similar competitive abilities (6 rediae and 1 sporocyst species) reduced the prevalence of the other trematode species developing in sporocysts only.  相似文献

Co-evolution between parasites and their hosts may lead to changes in the life-history traits of the host that promote sustainability of their populations despite parasite pressure. Such changes are expected to be especially pronounced in the host-parasite systems where parasites cause complete castration of their hosts. We have studied populations of the rough periwinkle, Littorina saxatilis, infested by castrating trematode species, in order to determine whether high infestation levels are associated with a compensatory increase in host fecundity. To test this hypothesis, we determined female fecundity in populations with trematode prevalence spanning from <1% to 30-75%, and followed long-term changes in female fecundity and trematode infestation in two heavily infested populations of L. saxatilis. The broad-scale geographic analysis of populations with different trematode burdens showed that fecundity of uninfected females is significantly higher in highly infested L. saxatilis populations than in those with low trematode burdens. This is also supported by a comparison of fecundity in two pairs of geographically adjacent populations with contrasting trematode levels, revealing higher fecundity of uninfected females in heavily infested populations. Higher fecundity could be explained by the larger size of uninfected females in some heavily infested populations but not in others. Long-term (15-20 years) intra-population analysis performed in two heavily infested L. saxatilis populations showed that female fecundity increased in parallel with a long-term increase in trematode prevalence from 20% to >75% in one population, but remained high and relatively stable in the second population, reflecting its consistently high trematode prevalence (40-65%). These data support the hypothesis that an increase in female fecundity may be a population compensation mechanism in response to heavy trematode infestation in L. saxatilis and suggest the possible involvement of both natural selection and fast (physiological) regulation mechanisms.  相似文献

Aim We investigated the relationship between host and parasite diversity as well as latitudinal gradients in parasite diversity on a continental scale in European freshwater trematodes. Location European freshwaters. Methods We extracted distributional data for 564 freshwater trematodes across 25 biogeographical regions in Europe from the Limnofauna Europaea and used multiple regression analyses to test for correlations between the diversity of definitive (vertebrates) or first intermediate (gastropods) hosts and that of trematodes, and for latitudinal gradients in trematode diversity. In particular, we investigated patterns in beta diversity among latitudinal bands and between trematode species that parasitize host groups with low (autogenic) and high (allogenic) dispersal capacity. We also tested for a latitudinal gradient in the proportional representation of these two trematode groups within regional faunas. Results Latitude or first intermediate host richness had no effect on trematode richness, but definitive host richness was a strong predictor of trematode richness, among both allogenic and autogenic parasites. We found that beta diversity of trematode faunas within latitudinal bands decreased to the north, with similar values for allogenic and autogenic trematodes. Finally, we observed an increasing proportion of autogenic species toward the north of Europe. Main conclusions The richness of definitive hosts appears to be the driver of trematode diversity at a continental scale. The latitudinal gradient in beta diversity reflects patterns observed in free‐living species and probably results from recolonization in the aftermath of the ice ages. The similar beta‐diversity patterns of allogenic and autogenic trematodes and the increasing proportion of autogenic trematodes with increasing latitude are surprising. We suggest that the geographical scale of our analysis or confounding factors such as differences in habitat utilization and specialization may partly explain these patterns.  相似文献

The results of investigation of leukocyte morphology and leukocyte contents of blood and caecum depending on the trematode Quinqueserialis quinqueserialis invasion rate in muskrats from natural population are given. At low trematode invasion rates, there was observed systemic activation of lymphopoiesis and neutrophil granulocytopoiesis with a decrease in the monocyte-macrophage response in caecum (trematode localization organ). At the same time, under high invasion rates, there was detected induction of T cell suppressor activity and the absence of a granulocyte response in the tissues under study. Intensification of B lymphocyte blast transformation in caecum tissues as well as the appearance of blast cells in the blood of infected muskrats was observed.  相似文献

The genetic diversity of trematodes within second intermediate hosts has important implications for the evolution of trematode populations as these hosts are utilized after the parasites reproduce asexually within first intermediate hosts and before sexual reproduction within definitive hosts. We characterised the genetic clonal diversity of the marine trematode Maritrema novaezealandensis within amphipod (Paracalliope novizealandiae) second intermediate hosts using four to six microsatellite loci to determine if multiple copies of identical trematode clones existed within naturally infected amphipods. To determine the relative timing of infections by identical clones within hosts, trematode metacercariae were assigned to six developmental stages and the stages of identical clones were compared. The genotypes of 306 trematodes were determined from 44 amphipods each containing more than one trematode. Six pairs of identical trematode clones were recovered in total (representing five amphipods: 11% of amphipods with greater than one trematode) and all pairs of clones belonged to the same developmental stage. This suggests that identical clone infections are effectively synchronous. A general decrease in the number of metacercariae recovered, prevalence, and mean intensity of infection for each subsequent developmental stage coupled with large numbers of metacercariae (>9) only being recovered from recent infections, supports the occurrence of post-infection amphipod mortality and/or within-host trematode mortality. Taken together, our results indicate that natural infections are characterised by high genetic diversity, but that amphipods also periodically encounter "batches" of genetically identical clones, potentially setting the stage for interactions within and between clonal groups inside the host.  相似文献

The component community of larval trematodes in the freshwater snail Semisulcospira nakasekoae (Caenogastropoda: Sorbeoconcha: Pleuroceridae) was surveyed over 13 months from April 1996 to April 1997 inclusive. Temporal and spatial fluctuation of trematode prevalence, the frequency of multiple infections, and the duration of cercarial shedding were examined as factors that might affect trematode community structure. The spatial prevalence of some species varied significantly, but the dynamics were too small to allow an explanation of the overall pattern. The prevalence of sanguinicolids fluctuated temporally, despite a stable size distribution in the host populations (> 6.0 mm shell width), suggesting the life-cycle phenology of this species. Some pairs of species had statistically positive associations, but no pairs had negative associations. This shows the importance of positive association possibly as a result of suppression of the host defensive response on trematode community structures in molluscan hosts. The length of the patent period, which is part of the persistent period, varied among trematode species, suggesting it to be one of the factors determining prevalence in the host population.  相似文献

The abundance of six species of trematodes: Aphanurus stossichi, Bacciger israelensis, Diphterostomum israelense, Plagioporus idoneus, Leprocreadium album and L. pegorchis, parasitic in the digestive tract of marine teleostei (Sparidae) collected near Jounieh (east Mediterranean), was analysed as a function of the host-size. In two parasite/host systems, infections were observed from the lowest size classes of the sample, with a clear tendency to an increase of abundance in older fish. In four others, parasites appear only above a rather high threshold class, young individuals never being infected. In the last three parasite/host systems, host invasion may occur early or late, but infection decreases above a well defined size class, old fishes rarely or never being infected. A given trematode species, when parasitizing several host species, shows similar abundance/host size relationships, e.g., P. idoneus in Diplodus vulgaris and Oblada melanura. When more than one species of trematode infects a single host species, curves can be markedly distinct; for instance, L. pegorchis was collected from Pagellus erythrinus below 15 cm. whereas D. israelense parasitized the same fish approximately above the same size. There is no evidence that such a replacement of one trematode by another in the course of host growth is a result of inter-specific competition.  相似文献

Trematode larvae must generally invade a molluscan intermediate host, usually a gastropod, before they can reach reproductive maturity in another definitive host. The research literature to date has focused almost exclusively on the documented specificity between particular trematode species and particular molluscan hosts; little attention has been paid to gastropod species that do not appear to serve as hosts. We sampled Rhode Island and Massachusetts populations of the marine gastropod Crepidula fornicata to determine whether this widespread species serves as a first intermediate host for trematodes. We also sampled from the same habitat populations of Littorina littorea and Ilyanassa obsoleta, gastropods known to serve as first intermediate hosts for several trematode species. All individuals were examined by dissection for the presence of sporocysts, rediae, or developing cercariae. Although 4-28% of L. littorea (N=112) and I. obsoleta (N=84) were infected by larvae of at least one trematode species, no individuals of C. fornicata sampled from the same locations were so infected (N=136). A survey of the Biological Abstracts computer database indicates that snails in only about 10% of marine gastropod families are known to serve as first intermediate hosts for trematodes. We suggest that more attention be paid to marine gastropods that appear not to be infected by trematode miracidia. Such species may productively serve as new models for understanding trematode host specificity and gastropod resistance to infection.  相似文献

Antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) contribute to the immune defenses of many vertebrates, including amphibians. As larvae, amphibians are often exposed to the infectious stages of trematode parasites, many of which must penetrate the host’s skin, potentially interacting with host AMPs. We tested the effects of the natural AMPs repertoires on both the survival of trematode infectious stages as well as their ability to infect larval amphibians. All five trematode species exhibited decreased survival of cercariae in response to higher concentrations of adult bullfrog AMPs, but no effect when exposed to AMPs from larval bullfrogs. Similarly, the use of norepinephrine to remove AMPs from larval bullfrogs, Pacific chorus frogs, and gray treefrogs had only weak (gray treefrogs) or non-significant (other tested species) effects on infection success by Ribeiroia ondatrae. We nonetheless observed strong differences in parasite infection as a function of both host stage (first- versus second-year bullfrogs) and host species (Pacific chorus frogs versus gray treefrogs) that were apparently unrelated to AMPs. Taken together, our results suggest that AMPs do not play a significant role in defending larval amphibians against trematode cercariae, but that they could be one mechanism helping to prevent infection of post-metamorphic amphibians, particularly for highly aquatic species.  相似文献

The impact of a drought on freshwater snail and trematode communities was investigated in a lake. Before the drought, 15 gastropod species (Valvatidae, Planorbidae, Lymnaeidae, Ancylidae, Physidae) and 10 trematode species (cercariaeum, xiphidiocercariae, echinostome, furcocercariae, notocotyle, lophocercous) were recorded. The rate of parasitism was 5.13% and there were 11 host species. The 2 major consequences of desiccation were the disappearance of snails, except Valvata piscinalis and Lymnaea peregra, and the absence of trematodes infecting the surviving snails. As soon as favourable conditions were restored, the littoral area was recolonized, first by hygrophilic and amphibious species, second by aquatic species. Nine months after the drought, the gastropod community was restored. Recolonization by the trematodes was delayed compared with that of gastropods. During the study, the overall prevalence was equal to 0.36% and only 4 trematode species and 5 host species were recorded. Because of the great variability of freshwater ecosystems, long-term studies are necessary to understand the dynamics of snail and trematode populations and determine the regulatory effect of parasitism in the field.  相似文献

A sexual adult trematode that is considered to be conspecific with the distinctive larval trematode Cercaria praecox Walker, 1971 is reported from the kyphosid fish Scorpis lineolata Kner in Moreton Bay, Queensland, Australia. The sexual adult is consistent with the cercarial body of Cercaria praecox in having a single caecum with an asymmetrical appendix, symmetrical testes immediately posterior to the ventral sucker, and the ovary and vitellarium both well posterior to the testes. This combination of characters is distinct within the Fellodistomidae Nicoll, 1909 and requires the proposal of a new genus, Oceroma n. g. Analysis of 28S rDNA sequences demonstrates that this species forms a clade with Coomera Dove & Cribb, 1995 within the Fellodistomidae. The life-cycle of the species is predicted to require two hosts and to involve the direct ingestion of the cercaria.  相似文献

Trematodes are abundant parasites essential for maintaining stability of marine intertidal ecosystems. Despite the great ecological significance of trematodes, long-term dynamics of their communities remains practically unstudied. This study, based on 12-year-long seasonal monitoring of infection of Littorina and Hydrobia snails with 16 trematode species in the White Sea, aimed to reveal factors determining long-term variation in infection of intertidal snails by trematode parthenitae and larvae. Using the state-of-the-art method of singular spectrum analysis, we revealed trends in this variation and assessed their significance. Interestingly, these trends were not associated with oceanic and climatic parameters but were mostly determined by changes in abundance of the trematode final hosts. Moreover, the prevalence trends turned out to be connected with both large-scale events and local factors at the scale of the intertidal site. The main factors determining the long-term dynamics of the trematode component communities in the study area were the decreasing abundance of birds due to growing anthropogenic disturbance and the increasing abundance of the three-spined stickleback. The analysis of long-term trends of trematode prevalence in intertidal snails may be a sensitive indicator of the abundance dynamics of final hosts in the coastal areas of temperate and northern seas.  相似文献

In November 2007, a 46-year-old male Thai patient presented with chronic abdominal pain for over 3 years. Colonoscopy revealed a small parasite of about 2 × 1 mm in size attached to the cecum mucosa. The worm was removed endoscopically, fixed, and stained for morphological observations. The specimen was identified as Anchitrema sanguineum (Digenea: Anchitrematidae), a trematode first reported in a reptile, Chamaeleo vulgaris, from Egypt, and then sporadically found in the intestines of insectivorous bats and other mammals. The patient was treated with praziquantel but no more worms were found in his stool. His symptoms improved slightly but not cured completely. It remains unclear whether the chronic abdominal pain of the patient was caused by this trematode infection. Whatever is the pathogenicity of this trematode, this is the first human case of A. sanguineum infection in the literature.  相似文献

Background

Since free radical scavengers of parasite origin like glutathione-S-transferase and superoxide dismutase are being explored as prospective vaccine targets, availability of these molecules within the parasite infecting different hosts as well as different sites of infection is of considerable importance. Using Clinostomum complanatum, as a model helminth parasite, we analysed the effects of habitat of in vivo transformation on free radical scavengers of this trematode parasite.

Methods

Using three different animal models for in vivo transformation and markedly different sites of infection, progenetic metacercaria of C. complanatum were transformed to adult ovigerous worms. Whole worm homogenates were used to estimate the levels of lipid peroxidation, a marker of oxidative stress and free radical scavengers.

Results

Site of in vivo transformation was found to drastically affect the levels of free radical scavengers in this model trematode parasite. It was observed that oxygen availability at the site of infection probably influences levels of free radical scavengers in trematode parasites.

Conclusion

This is the first report showing that habitat of in vivo transformation affects levels of free radical scavengers in trematode parasites. Since free radical scavengers are prospective vaccine targets and parasite infection at ectopic sites is common, we propose that infections at different sites, may respond differently to free radical scavenger based vaccines.  相似文献
