Fecundity ofChironomus cucini increased linearly across a three-fold range of female pupal biomass. Females from a lake producing small pupae (Crystal Lake) had an average of 303 primary follicles, while larger pupae from Trout Lake had an average fecundity of 582. Pupae produced in Crystal Lake from larvae that received experimental food supplements were intermediate in size and fecundity. Pupal biomass explained 76% of the variation in fecundity. No difference in egg size was detected between pupae from the two lakes, and an average value of 2.1 g egg–1 was used to calculate the total biomass allocated to eggs in each of 79 females dissected. This measure of reproductive effort scaled isometrically with pupal mass. On average, females allocated 48% of their biomass to eggs and 52% to somatic tissues. A comparison of average male biomass to female somatic biomass across 12 populations indicated that the biomass difference between the sexes is a biased predictor of fecundity.  相似文献

Abstract.
  • 1 Juveniles of the Australian lycaenid butterfly, Jalmenus evagorus (Donovan), secrete to ants a solution of sugars and amino acids, primarily serine. The attendant ants protect the larvae and pupae from parasites and predators.
  • 2 The effect of caterpillar nutrition on the defence provided by ants was investigated. Potted food plants of Acacia decurrens were either given water containing nitrogenous fertilizer or were given water alone. Fertilized plants had a higher nitrogen content than unfertilized plants.
  • 3 Fifth instar larvae of J.evagoras feeding on fertilized plants attracted a larger ant guard than those feeding on unfertilized plants. In the absence of caterpillars, ants were not differentially attracted to fertilized and unfertilized plants.
  • 4 In the presence of ants, over a 10-day period, larvae on fertilized plants survived better than larvae on unfertilized plants. In the absence of ants larvae survived equally on fertilized and unfertilized plants. It is concluded that larvae on fertilized plants attracted a larger ant guard, and thereby survived better, than larvae on unfertilized plants.

Exposure of early fourth-instar larvae of Aedes aegypti to the juvenile hormone analogue Altosid ZR15® (methoprene) significantly increased the concentration of carbohydrates in the haemolymph of late fourth-instar larvae and reduced the haemolymph carbohydrate concentration of 24-h-old pupae relative to controls. Such treatment also effected a decline in haemolymph amino nitrogen levels of the pupal stage and a depletion of haemolymph proteins in late fourth-instar larvae as well as pupae. Two of nine protein fractions in the haemolymph of larvae were significantly depleted following methoprene treatment. Fourteen soluble protein fractions were present in the haemolymph of control pupae; two of these were missing from the pupae which were treated as larvae with methoprene. A further protein fraction, common to the haemolymph of both treated and control pupae, was significantly reduced in concentration as a consequence of exposure to methoprene. The juvenile hormone analogue impaired the capacity of the fat bodies of late fourth-instar larvae and pupae to synthesise proteins, resulting in a lowered concentration of fat body proteins. Glycogen levels in the fat bodies of treated larvae were significantly lower than in controls and glycogenolysis was suppressed due to an overall depletion of glycogen phosphorylase and, in pupae, a lowered ratio of active: inactive enzyme. The data are consistent with the proposition that the juvenile hormone analogue elicits neuroendocrinological changes in the target insect.  相似文献

We conducted a whole year research on the ecology of Mansonia indubitans and Ma. titillans in Macáes Pond, Costanera Sur Reserve, Buenos Aires, Argentina. The usage of different floating plants by immature instars and their overwintering was analyzed. The percentage of usage of the available floating macrophytes (Pistia, Limnobium, and Salvinia) by the larvae and pupae was studied. Also, we defined positivity (P+) as the percentage of plants with immature instars for each plant genus on a monthly basis. Ma. immature instars were captured throughout the year and Pistia was the resource most commonly exploited by the mosquitoes. The percentage of fourth-instar larvae and pupae on Pistia roots with respect to total immature instars captured was assessed on a monthly and seasonal basis. The proportion of fourth-instar larvae and pupae from both species of Mansonia on water lettuce roots, showed significant differences between months and seasons. Our results suggest that the populations of Ma. indubitans and Ma. titillans in Macáes Pond, survive during winter mainly as fourth-instar larvae.  相似文献

The cabbage root fly, Delia radicum L. (Diptera: Anthomyiidae), has a life cycle with spatially separated components: adults live and oviposit above ground, whereas larvae feed and pupate below ground. Oviposition choice is affected by shoot glucosinolates. However, little is known about below‐ground plant defence against D. radicum. Here, we investigate the effect of glucosinolates on oviposition preference and performance of D. radicum, using two naturally occurring heritable chemotypes of Barbarea vulgaris R. Br. (Brassicaceae) with different glucosinolate profiles: BAR‐type plants (the most common and genetically dominant glucosinolate profile, dominated by glucobarbarin) and NAS‐type plants (the recessive phenotype, dominated by gluconasturtiin). Performance was studied by applying 10 neonate D. radicum larvae per plant and measuring pupal biomass after 18 days. There was no difference in retrieval, but pupae had a higher biomass after development on BAR‐type plants. On average, BAR‐type plants received 1.8 times more eggs than NAS types, but this difference was not statistically significant. In a separate experiment, we compared the physiological response of both chemotypes to D. radicum feeding. Infestation reduced root and shoot biomass, root sugar and amino acid levels, and shoot sugar levels. Except for shoot sugar levels, these responses did not differ between the two chemotypes. Shoot or root glucosinolate profiles did not change on infestation. As glucosinolate profiles were the only consistent difference between the chemotypes, it is likely that this difference caused the reduced biomass of D. radicum pupae on NAS‐type plants. In an experimental garden, plants were heavily infested by root flies, but we found no differences in the percentage of fallen‐over flower stalks between the chemotypes. Overall, we found more pupae in the soil near BAR‐type plants, but this was not statistically significant. The results of the performance experiment suggest that BAR‐type plants may be more suitable hosts than NAS‐type plants.  相似文献

Abstract 1 The effects of feeding by larvae of the rice water weevil, Lissorhoptrus oryzophilus Kuschel, on the growth and yield components of rice, Oryza sativa, were evaluated using four varieties of rice, ‘Cocodrie’, ‘Cypress’, ‘Bengal’ and ‘XP1003’, over 2 years. 2 Both adults and larvae of L. oryzophilus feed on rice plants, but it is feeding by the larval stage that causes economic losses. Feeding by L. oryzophilus larvae resulted in extensive damage to root systems. Pruning of root systems resulted in a decrease in tiller number and shoot biomass of rice plants in the vegetative stage of growth. 3 Yield losses were due to a combination of decreases in panicle densities, numbers of grains per panicle, and grain weights. Decreases in panicle densities were a direct result of the reductions in tiller numbers. Reductions in numbers of grains per panicle and grain weights probably resulted from decreases in shoot biomass. 4 Injury by rice water weevil larvae is chronic. The tillering stage of rice suffered the majority of weevil damage, but the growth effects were not manifested until later.  相似文献

A list of macroinvertebrate species recorded in the zoobenthos in Lake Sevan in 2007 and 2010 is presented. The list includes 38 species, 14 of which have been found in the lake for the first time. Chironomid larvae and pupae are the most diverse (27 species) in the macrozoobenthos of the lake. In Bolshoi Sevan, the maximum biomass of macrozoobenthos (24.82 g/m2) was recorded in the sublittoral; in Malyi Sevan the maximum biomass (14.31 g/m2) was recorded in the profundal. In 2010 chironomids dominated by biomass in the sublittoral (48.9 and 60.3%, respectively). The benthos in the littoral was dominated by oligochaetes (50.2%).  相似文献

Nitrogen (N) is one of the most critical chemical elements for plant and animal growth, exerting a variety of bottom‐up effects. Development and oviposition of the beet armyworm, Spodoptera exigua (Hübner) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), were studied in relation to varying N fertilization levels (42, 112, 196, and 280 p.p.m.) in cotton [Gossypium hirsutum L. (Malvaceae)]. Low N fertilization of cotton plants led to reduced plant biomass and a lower percentage of N in leaf blades and in leaf petioles. Development of S. exigua larvae fed with plants with reduced N applications (42 and 112 p.p.m.) was prolonged relative to treatments receiving higher N fertilization. Almost all larvae reared on artificial diets underwent only five instars before pupation. However, most larvae reared on cotton plants, irrespective of N levels, experienced a supernumerary sixth larval instar. Furthermore, significantly more larvae reared on lower N cotton plants underwent supernumerary development compared to larvae reared on higher N cotton plants. Life‐time feeding damage per larva ranged from 55 to 65 cm2, depending on the nutritional quality of the food plant, although the differences were not statistically significant. Larvae distinguished between cotton plants with various nutritional qualities and fed preferentially on higher N plants. Female moth oviposition choice was also affected by host plant nutritional quality: cotton plants with higher N levels were preferentially chosen by S. exigua females for oviposition. The mechanisms of these effects are unclear, but they can have important implications for population dynamics and pest status of beet armyworms in the field.  相似文献

Studies on the effect of a juvenoid, DPE-28 (2,4-dinitrophenyl-2',6'-di-tertiarybutyl phenyl ether) on biology and behaviour of Cx. quinquefasciatus showed that the developmental duration, sex ratio, mating success and blood feeding were considerably affected by the exposure of larvae and pupae to the compound. Exposure of fourth instar larvae to 0.007 (EI90) and 0.0019 (EI50) ppm of DPE-28 prolonged the duration of pupation by 58.6 and 52.4 hr and delayed the adult emergence by 35.4 and 17.7 hr in males and 36.8 and 21.1 hr in females respectively. Exposure of freshly ecdysed pupae to 10 and 5 ppm delayed the adult emergence with respect to the control by 54.3 and 32.4 hr in males and 55.2 and 33.2 hr in females respectively. The sex ratio of the adults emerged from treated larvae and pupae was also affected. The female mosquitoes that survived from the exposed fourth instar larvae and pupae exhibited a low blood engorgement ratio. This depression in blood feeding was more pronounced in adults emerged from treated pupae than that of treated fourth instar larvae. A significant proportion of adults emerged from treated larvae and pupae were able to feed only partially. Mating success of the treated populations declined considerably when crosses were made between the males and females emerged from treated fourth instar larvae and pupae. The adults emerged from treated larvae and pupae showed a significant reduction in the oviposition.  相似文献

The present study investigated the development and dispersal of bagworm larvae, Thyridopteryx ephemeraeformis (Haworth) (Lepidoptera: Psychidae), on three hosts: arborvitae, Thuja occidentalis, blue spruce, Picea pungens, and juniper, Juniperus virginiana. The biomass of larvae was recorded at repeated intervals at 21 field sites. The relative quality of plants varied during larval development: early in the season, larvae were heavier on juniper and arborvitae than on blue spruce; late in the season, in contrast, larvae and pupae were lighter on juniper than on the two other plants. Larvae on blue spruce pupated later than those on arborvitae. In the laboratory, feeding rate and larval growth were not influenced by the density of larvae on the foliage of arborvitae up to a range which greatly exceeded that observed at any of our experimental sites. The incidence of dispersal among neonates emerging on arborvitae was high, as indicated by the high number of larvae captured on sticky traps, and the relatively low number of early instars on arborvitae foliage in relation to the reproductive output of females in the parental generation. The high rate of dispersal among early instars may be due to potential resource depletion over successive generations of bagworms.  相似文献

This study evaluated the predation by Podisus nigrispinus (Dallas) (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae) at various densities of larvae and pupae of the pest Plutella xylostella (L.) (Lepidoptera: Plutellidae). We tested predator behavior of female P. nigrispinus at six experimental densities (1, 5, 10, 15, 20, or 25 prey items in a 1‐l transparent plastic container, replicated 15 times for each density) of both the fourth instar and pupae of P. xylostella. The number of prey consumed was monitored every 15 min for 12 h and was subsequently monitored at 24 h. Podisus nigrispinus females were weighed before and after the experiments to determine the effect of different densities of prey on their weight gain. Female predators had a Type‐II functional response, with attack rate estimated at 1.387 and 0.260 and a handling time of 0.091 and 0.183 h?1 for larvae and pupae, respectively. Podisus nigrispinus consumed on average 10.9 larvae or 5.5 pupae in 24 h. Despite the similarity of the response type, P. nigrispinus preferred to feed on larvae, rather than on pupae.  相似文献

Abstract. Changes in the discontinuous gas exchange cycle of pupal beet armyworm, Spodoptera exigua (Hübner) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), exposed or not to Cry1C Bacillus thuringiensis toxin, are examined against developmental age (1–7 days) and at different temperatures (10–25 °C) using flow through respirometry. Both exposed and nonexposed pupae exhibit discontinuous gas exchange, but only at 10 °C; the frequency of cyclic release of CO2 increases with increasing temperatures. The three phases of the discontinuous gas exchange cycle are distinct for both treatment groups. However, the duration of each phase is significantly greater for pupae exposed previously to toxin. The closed phase is 40 ± 14% longer, the flutter phase 23 ± 19% longer, and the open phase is 28 ± 12% longer when pupae were exposed to toxin. Respiratory water loss is 4.5 ± 1.3% for toxin exposed pupae and 2.1 ± 2.4% for unexposed pupae. Furthermore, the exposed pupae have significantly greater cuticular permeability (26.01 ± 1.9 µg cm−2 h−1 mmHg−1) than the nonexposed pupae (9.64 ± 0.9 µg cm−2 h−1 mmHg−1). However, in both strains, cuticular transpiration (>93%) far exceeds respiratory transpiration. Overall, total water loss is significantly greater in pupae whose larvae are exposed to toxin compared with pupae from nontreated larvae. Toxin exposed pupae have a mean cycle duration of 60 ± 2.5 min whereas that of nonexposed pupae is 42 ± 1.8 min.(ml g−1 h−1) of the open phase is greater earlier in pupal life followed by a minimum at mid-pupal stage and an increase at late-pupal development in both treatment groups. Combining all 7 days, closed, flutter and open phase (ml g−1 h−1), pupae exposed to toxin produce significantly more CO2 during each phase. On average, toxin exposed pupae produce 52 ± 12, 43 ± 10 and 15 ± 37% more CO2 than the untreated pupae during the closed, flutter and open phases, respectively. Therefore, the present study reinforces the need to use insects of similar developmental age in studies of insect respiration patterns and energy metabolism.  相似文献

Host-pathogen relationships were studied between the pink bollworm, Pectinophora gossypiella, and a cytoplasmic polyhedrosis virus (CPV). Results showed that the median effective dose (ED50), the dose that infects half the test subjects, was 1.91 × 102 polyhedral inclusion bodies (PIB)/ml of diet. The median lethal dose (LD50) was 1.72 × 105 PIB/ml. Diagnosis for CPV infection was more reliable in adult pink bollworms than in late-instar larvae. Duration of the larval stage increased with viral dose, but duration of the pupal stage was not affected by CPV. Weights of infected male and female pupae were 23.7 and 24.0% less than those of untreated pupae, respectively. Pupal weights were not significantly influenced by increases in the viral dose. Weights of larvae of a given age decreased as dose increased. The effect of CPV on duration of the immature stages and on pupal weight was not significantly influenced by rearing temperatures between 25.0° and 32.5°C. Pupal weight of infected pink bollworms decreased as the duration of the larval stage increased.  相似文献

Summary Large populations of S. ornatum and S. equinum inhabit Ranunculus plants in the Bere Stream at Bere Heath. A weekly sampling programme obtained both larvae and pupae. The results of weekly sampling indicated four annual generations of S. ornatum and three of S. equinum. Quantitative samples of larvae, obtained at least three times in each generation gave estimates of production ranging from 0.26 g to 2.75 g dry weight m-2 per generation of larvae of S. equinum and 0.15 g to 1.19 g dry weight m-2 per generation of larvae of S. ornatum.Retention times of food by larvae, under field conditions were in the order of twenty to thirty minutes. Following determination of the weight of the gut contents for each size class of larvae, the activity of feeding larvae was calculated to achieve complete theoretical clearance of suspended material in a distance of 0.6 km, at peak population densities in the summer months.Dept. of Applied Biology, Bath University of Technology  相似文献

本文研究了升高环境温度对小粉虫(Alphitobiusdiaperinus,鞘翅目拟步行虫总科)末龄幼虫、蛹以及成虫的失水和热敏性(临界热极值,Criticalthermalmaximum,CTmax)的影响。小粉虫成虫和蛹的CTmax值显著低于末龄幼虫(末龄幼虫:CTmax=48.5±0.5℃;蛹:CTmax=48.0±0.9℃;成虫:CTmax=47.8±1.1℃)。此外,成虫的适应性对其CTmax没有显著的影响。在20至60℃连续记录失水值中,三个龄期之间存在显著差异。随着超过临界点温度(约为40℃)的快速升高,末龄幼虫与成虫的失水程度相近。蛹具有明显低的失水速率,即使在温度高于40℃的情况下。当温度升高10℃时(25-35℃),会造成小粉虫蛹和成虫失水增加2.0倍和2.6倍,分别为:Q10=2.05±0.70和2.49±1.31,而幼虫则为3.52±1.27。当高于35-45℃时,幼虫和成虫失水增加甚快(Q10=6.85±1.90和8.51±2.32)。而蛹在高于35-45℃时失水也增加(Q10=3.76±1.83),但低于幼虫和成虫。小粉虫的蛹处于静止和不取食状态,代谢速率较低,其具有特殊结构的气孔能较好地保持关闭状态,且蛹的表皮由脂肪和蛋白质组成,以上诸因素可解释其失水减少的原因  相似文献

ABSTRACT. The spontaneous locomotor activity of the larvae of Culiseta incidens was monitored with acoustic actographs. Individuals, in water resting on the cones of the speakers, displayed an activity rhythm in LD 12:12 with peak activity in the light phase. A similar rhythm occurred in DD following rearing in either LD 12:12 or LL, with free-running periods of 23.5–24 h. No evidence was found of any consistent differences between the periods of the larvae and pupae. The amplitude of the pupal rhythm gradually increased as metamorphosis progressed. It is suggested that rhythmicity might also be found in those behavioural responses of mosquito larvae and pupae which have been the subject of previous studies.  相似文献

为探讨除草剂胁迫对空心莲子草叶甲种群的影响,寻求合理施用除草剂,有效保护叶甲,提高其控草效果的应对策略,利用叶片残留法测试了在草甘膦、农达、水花生净与35%苄·丁可湿粉等除草剂胁迫下空心莲子草叶甲卵孵化率,幼虫、成虫存活率以及蛹羽化率。结果表明被测试的4种除草剂均不同程度地降低空心莲子草叶甲卵孵化率,幼虫与成虫存活率及蛹羽化率,特别是水花生净28.0、35.0 g/L两种浓度处理,35%苄·丁可湿粉4.0 g/L浓度处理显著降低卵孵化率;农达13.4 g/L浓度处理显著降低1龄前期幼虫存活率,农达40.1 g/L与 53.4 g/L两种浓度处理显著降低2龄前期幼虫存活率;水花生净28.0 g/L浓度处理显著降低3龄前期幼虫存活率;草甘膦97.6 g/L与 122.0 g/L浓度处理、农达26.7 g/L与66.8 g/L浓度处理、35%苄·丁可湿粉2.0 g/L浓度处理显著降低后期蛹的羽化率;35%苄·丁可湿粉1.0 g/L浓度处理显著降低羽化后3 d雌虫的存活率。除草剂除直接杀死空心莲子草叶甲,降低其种群数量外,使叶甲失去食物与避护所,快速地引起叶甲种群崩溃。建议合理施药,并在施药时,随机留若干小斑块不施药,保护叶甲,可望提高其田间控草效果。  相似文献

Larval mortality with growth and pupation rates of Himalopsyche acharai were compared between standing and flowing water in a laboratory from June to November 2004. In flowing water, 90% of larvae started pupal case building and 81.5% of them developed to pupae by October. In standing water, 92.6% died before pupation. The larvae reared in flowing water grew significantly faster than those in standing water. These results show why Himalopsyche acharai does not inhabit pools and slowly flowing streams.  相似文献

Several apiaceous and two asteraceous species were tested for their suitability to support larval development of the carrot fly. Plants grown in pots or transplanted from seed beds into pots, were inoculated with a specific number of eggs. Pupae and non-pupated larvae were collected 6–7 wk after inoculation. Both the number and weights of pupae produced varied widely among the species. Cultivated carrots Daucus carota sativus often gave rise to only moderate numbers of pupae, but these invariably attained the highest weights. Pimpinella major was the only apiaceous plant tested that did not yield any carrot flies. The two asteraceous plants Cichorium intybus and Tanacetum vulgare failed to support larval development. Total carrot fly biomass produced per plant was influenced by both the host species and the root weight. Emergence rates of adult flies were positively correlated with pupal weights. Small individuals tended to have a longer total developmental time from egg to adult fly.  相似文献
