Hypertrophy is an adaptive mechanism of the heart subjected to pressure overload. Ultrastructural, electrophysiological and mechanical changes occur during this adaptation. A decrease in the inotropic responsiveness of the hypertrophied heart has often been observed as compared to the normal heart. Four sarcolemmal mechanisms that could account for this modification have been described. The mechanism of action of each system (calcium channel, alpha-and beta-adrenergic systems, (Na+,K+)-ATPase) of the hypertrophied heart has been compared to that of the normal heart. In spite of the paucity of results available relating to the calcium channel, the lengthening of the action potential in every case of compensatory hypertrophy could be explained by an altered functioning of the calcium channel. alpha- and beta-adrenergic systems in the hypertrophied heart could be modified at the receptor level itself, or at another level in the cascade of events under their control. For example, two different models of hypertrophy showed a decreased inotropic responsiveness correlated to a defect in the GS regulatory protein. The modification of the ouabain-receptor (Na+,K+)-ATPase mediates a decrease and a prolongation of the inotropic response. According to the modifications of each system, a direct relationship does not seem to exist between the stimulated membrane system and the inotropic responsiveness of the hypertrophied heart. 相似文献

Can early wilting of old leaves account for much of the ABA accumulation in flooded pea plants? 总被引:3,自引:2,他引:3
When pea plants (Pisum sativum L.) were subjected to flooding,abscisic acid (ABA) content in shoots and roots increased upto 8-fold in the following days and stomatal conductance significantlydecreased. Although young leaves of flooded plants had a slightlyhigher water potential than those of the unflooded plants, oldleaves had lower water potential and lost turgor at the timewhen a substantial ABA increase was detected. In plants wherethe old leaves were clipped off, flooding did not cause anyABA increase during 7 d of the experimental period, except underconditions of higher transpiration demand, when the increasein ABA content was both delayed and small in scale (only I-fold).When intact plants were flooded and ABA was assayed separatelyin both old and young leaves, the ABA increase in old leavespreceded that in young leaves. Evidence here suggests that theflooding-induced ABA increase mainly results from the wiltingof old leaves. This suggests that young leaves may be protectedfrom wilting by ABA originating in old leaves under unfavourableenvironmental conditions. A growing number of studies in multicellular organisms highlight low or moderate frequencies of paternal transmission of cytoplasmic organelles, including both mitochondria and chloroplasts. It is well established that strict maternal inheritance is selectively blind to cytoplasmic elements that are deleterious to males – ’mother's curse’. But it is not known how sensitive this conclusion is to slight levels of paternal cytoplasmic leakage. We assess the scope for polymorphism when individuals bear multiple cytoplasmic alleles in the presence of paternal leakage, bottlenecks and recurrent mutation. When fitness interactions among cytoplasmic elements within an individual are additive, we find that sexually antagonistic polymorphism is restricted to cases of strong selection on males. However, when fitness interactions among cytoplasmic elements are nonlinear, much more extensive polymorphism can be supported in the cytoplasm. In particular, mitochondrial mutants that have strong beneficial fitness effects in males and weak deleterious fitness effects in females when rare (i.e. ’reverse dominance’) are strongly favoured under paternal leakage. We discuss how such epistasis could arise through preferential segregation of mitochondria in sex‐specific somatic tissues. Our analysis shows how paternal leakage can dampen the evolution of deleterious male effects associated with predominant maternal inheritance of cytoplasm, potentially explaining why ’mother's curse’ is less pervasive than predicted by earlier work. 相似文献

Within 48 h of exposure of nodulated soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr. cv. Harosoy 63 x Bradyrhizobium japonicum USDA 16] to 10 mM NO3, significant decreases were observed in nodule-specific nitrogenase (EC 1.7.99.2) activity and CO2 evolution and in the proportion of [14C]-labeled photosynthate partitioned to nodule biomass and respiration. These trends continued over the subsequent 3 days of the study period. Concomitant with these events was an 137% increase in the relative growth rate of the whole plant and a cessation in nodule growth. Although the concentration of total soluble sugar in nodules was not affected by NO3 treatment, the concentration of starch declined to 13% of the control level after 2 days exposure to NO3?. In contrast to the effects of NO3?, nodules in which nitrogenase activity was partially inhibited by a 30 min exposure to 100% O2, showed a 52% increase over control in the starch pool over a 72 h period. The results were compared with recent studies of NO3? inhibition of nitrogenase activity in legumes, and in contrast to these studies it was concluded that the inhibitory effects of NO3? could be accounted for by alterations in photosynthate partitioning to nodules. A hypothesis is proposed which attempts to account for the recent observation (J. K. Vessey, K. B. Walsh, and D. B. Layzell 1988. Physiol. Plant. 73: 113–121) that nitrogenase activity in phloem-limited and nitrate-inhibited nodules is limited by O2 diffusion. This hypothesis separates the concepts of photosynthate partitioning and phloem supply from that of carbohydrate deprivation and related effects on the size of the carbohydrate pools in nodules. 相似文献

Genetic benefits from mating with multiple males are thought to favour the evolution of polyandry. However, recent evidence suggests that non-genetic paternal effects via seminal fluid might contribute to the observed effects of polyandry on offspring performance. Here, we test this hypothesis using the field cricket Teleogryllus oceanicus. Using interference RNA, we first show that at least one seminal fluid protein is essential for embryo survival. We then show that polyandrous females mated to three different males produced embryos with higher pre-hatching viability than did monandrous females mated with the same male three times. Pseudo-polyandrous females that obtained sperm and seminal fluid from a single male and seminal fluid from two additional males had embryos with viabilities intermediate between monandrous and polyandrous females. Our results suggest either that ejaculate mediated paternal effects on embryo viability have both genetic and non-genetic components, or that seminal fluids transferred by castrated males provide only a subset of proteins contained within the normal ejaculate, and are unable to exert their full effect on embryo viability. 相似文献

The aim of this work was to investigate the poorly understood effects of co-culturing of two white rot fungi on the production of lignin-degrading enzyme activities. Four species, Ceriporiopsis subvermispora, Physisporinus rivulosus, Phanerochaete chrysosporium and Pleurotus ostreatus were cultured in pairs to study the degradation of aspen wood and the production of lignin-degrading enzymes. Potential of co-culturing for biopulping was evaluated. Chemical analysis of decayed aspen wood blocks showed that co-culturing of C. subvermispora with P. ostreatus could significantly stimulate wood decay, when compared to monocultures. Based on the fungi tested here, however, this effect is species-specific. Other combinations of fungi were slightly stimulating or not stimulatory. The pattern of lignin degradation was altered towards the acid insoluble part of lignin especially in co-cultures where P. ostreatus was included as a partner. The use of agar plates containing the polymeric dye Poly R-478 showed elevated dye decolourization at the confrontation zone between mycelia. Laccase was significantly stimulated only in the co-culture of P. ostreatus with C. subvermispora. Manganese peroxidase activity was stimulated in co-cultures of P. ostreatus with C. subvermispora or with P. rivulosus. Immunoblotting indicated changes in lignin-degrading enzymes and/or their isoform composition in response to co-culturing. This is the first report on the effects of co-culturing of potential biopulping fungi on wood degradation, and gives basic knowledge on fungal interactions during wood decay that can be utilized in practical applications. 相似文献

Host recognition and use in female parasitoids strongly relies on host fidelity, a plastic behavior which can significantly restrict the host preferences of parasitoids, thus reducing the gene flow between parasitoid populations attacking different insect hosts. However, the effect of migrant males on the genetic differentiation of populations has been frequently ignored in parasitoids, despite its known impact on gene flow between populations. Hence, we studied the extent of gene flow mediated by female and male parasitoids by assessing sibship relationships among parasitoids within and between populations, and its impact on geographic and host‐associated differentiation in the aphid parasitoid Aphidius ervi. We report evidences of a high gene flow among parasitoid populations on different aphid hosts and geographic locations. The high gene flow among parasitoid populations was found to be largely male mediated, suggested by significant differences in the distribution of full‐sib and paternal half‐sib dyads of parasitoid populations. 相似文献

Can improvement in photosynthesis increase crop yields? 总被引:22,自引:0,他引:22
The yield potential (Yp) of a grain crop is the seed mass per unit ground area obtained under optimum growing conditions without weeds, pests and diseases. It is determined by the product of the available light energy and by the genetically determined properties: efficiency of light capture (?i), the efficiency of conversion of the intercepted light into biomass (?c) and the proportion of biomass partitioned into grain (η). Plant breeding brings η and ?i close to their theoretical maxima, leaving ?c, primarily determined by photosynthesis, as the only remaining major prospect for improving Yp. Leaf photosynthetic rate, however, is poorly correlated with yield when different genotypes of a crop species are compared. This led to the viewpoint that improvement of leaf photosynthesis has little value for improving Yp. By contrast, the many recent experiments that compare the growth of a genotype in current and future projected elevated [CO2] environments show that increase in leaf photosynthesis is closely associated with similar increases in yield. Are there opportunities to achieve similar increases by genetic manipulation? Six potential routes of increasing ?c by improving photosynthetic efficiency were explored, ranging from altered canopy architecture to improved regeneration of the acceptor molecule for CO2. Collectively, these changes could improve ?c and, therefore, Yp by c. 50%. Because some changes could be achieved by transgenic technology, the time of the development of commercial cultivars could be considerably less than by conventional breeding and potentially, within 10–15 years. 相似文献

Summary Male and female burying beetles (Nicrophorus orbicollis) bury and preserve small carcasses which become food for their young. Typically, females remain with the brood until after larval development is complete, but males leave about 3 days after larvae hatch. In the absence of competitors, the effect of male presence throughout larval development is to reduce the size and weight of the brood on small carcasses, but not on larger ones. However, male assistance greatly reduces the probability that a conspecific competitor will usurp the carcass and kill the brood. A dynamic optimization model of the duration of paternal care is developed and the daily probabilities of discovery by conspecific competitors and of finding a new reproductive opportunity are varied. The model predicts that the duration of care should not be very sensitive to either the intensity of competition or the probability of finding another carcass. For a given probability of discovery by an intruder, the probability of finding a new carcass affects the duration of care in a stepwise fashion such that males should either provide no care or remain 10 days on large carcasses and 9 days on small ones (3 days after larvae hatch, in each case). The model also suggests that by providing an average of 9.5 days of care in nature, males act as if there is a negligible chance of having another brood, i.e. they are maximizing their reproductive success with their current brood. 相似文献

Radiation-induced (RI) tissue injuries can be caused by radiation therapy, nuclear accidents or radiological terrorism. Notwithstanding the complexity of RI pathophysiology, there are some effective approaches to treatment of both acute and chronic radiation damages. Cytokine therapy is the main strategy capable of preventing or reducing the acute radiation syndrome (ARS), and hematopoietic growth factors (GF) are particularly effective in mitigating bone marrow (BM) aplasia and stimulating hematopoietic recovery. However, first, as a consequence of RI stem and progenitor cell death, use of cytokines should be restricted to a range of intermediate radiation doses (3 to 7 Gy total body irradiation). Second, ARS is a global illness that requires treatment of damages to other tissues (epithelial, endothelial, glial, etc.), which could be achieved using pleiotropic or tissue-specific cytokines. Stem cell therapy (SCT) is a promising approach developed in the laboratory that could expand the ability to treat severe radiation injuries. Allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (BM, mobilized peripheral blood and cord blood) transplantation has been used in radiation casualties with variable success due to limiting toxicity related to the degree of graft histocompatibility and combined injuries. Ex vivo expansion should be used to augment cord blood graft size and/or promote very immature stem cells. Autologous SCT might also be applied to radiation casualties from residual hematopoietic stem and progenitor cells (HSPC). Stem cell plasticity of different tissues such as liver or skeletal muscle, may also be used as a source of hematopoietic stem cells. Finally, other types of stem cells such as mesenchymal, endothelial stem cells or other tissue committed stem cells (TCSC), could be used for treating damages to nonhematopoietic organs. 相似文献

Vegetation dynamics in rangelands and other ecosystems are known to be mediated by topoedaphic properties. Vegetation monitoring programs, however, often do not consider the impact of soils and other sources of landscape heterogeneity on the temporal patterns observed. Ecological sites (ES) comprise a land classification system based on soil, topographic, and climate variations that can be readily applied by land managers to classify topoedaphic properties at monitoring locations. We used a long-term (>40 y) vegetation record from southeastern Arizona, USA to test the utility of an ES classification for refining interpretations of monitoring data in an area of relatively subtle soil differences. We focused on two phenomena important to rangeland management in the southeastern Arizona region: expansion of the native tree velvet mesquite (Prosopis velutina Woot.) and spread of the introduced perennial grass Lehmann lovegrass (Eragrostis lehmanniana Nees). Specifically, we sought to determine if a quantitative, ES-specific analysis of the long-term record would (1) improve detection of changes in plant species having heightened ecological or management importance and (2) further clarify topoedaphic effects on vegetation trajectories. We found that ES class membership was a significant factor explaining spatiotemporal variation in velvet mesquite canopy cover, Lehmann lovegrass basal cover, and Lehmann lovegrass density measurements. In addition, we observed that the potential magnitude of velvet mesquite and Lehmann lovegrass increases varied substantially among ES classes. Our study brings attention to a practical land management tool that might be called upon to increase the effectiveness of vegetation-based indicators of ecosystem change. 相似文献

According to the 'mental time travel hypothesis' animals, unlike humans, cannot mentally travel backwards in time to recollect specific past events (episodic memory) or forwards to anticipate future needs (future planning). Until recently, there was little evidence in animals for either ability. Experiments on memory in food-caching birds, however, question this assumption by showing that western scrub-jays form integrated, flexible, trial-unique memories of what they hid, where and when. Moreover, these birds can adjust their caching behaviour in anticipation of future needs. We suggest that some animals have elements of both episodic-like memory and future planning. 相似文献

When Streptococcus salivarius was grown in batch culture in the presence of various Tween detergents, the fatty acid moiety of the detergent was incorporated into the lipids of its membrane. Tween 80 (containing primarily oleic acid) markedly stimulated the production of extracellular glucosyltransferase and also increased the degree of unsaturation of the membrane lipid fatty acids. The possibility that an increase in membrane unsaturated fatty acids promoted extracellular glucosyltransferase production was examined by growing cells at different temperatures in the presence or absence of Tween 80. The membrane lipids of cells grown at 30 degrees C, 37 degrees C and 40 degrees C without Tween 80 exhibited unsaturated/saturated fatty acid ratios of 2.06, 1.01 and 0.87 respectively. A significant increase in the production of extracellular glucosyltransferase was observed at 30 degrees C compared to cells grown at 40 degrees C. However, cells produced much more exoenzyme at all temperatures when grown with Tween 80. The results indicated that an increase in the unsaturated fatty acid content of the membrane lipids was not by itself sufficient to account for the stimulation of extracellular glucosyltransferase production by Tween 80, but that the surfactant also had to be present. 相似文献

We studied the effect of heat shock and wood-fueled smoke on the emergence of native and exotic plant species in soil samples obtained in an evergreen shrubland of central Chile, located on the eastern foothills of the Coastal Range of Lampa. Immediately after collection samples were dried and stored under laboratory condition. For each two transect, 10 samples were randomly chosen, and one of the following treatments was applied: 1) Heat-shock treatment. 2) Plant-produced smoke treatment. 3) Combined heat-and-smoke treatment. 4) Control, corresponding to samples not subjected to treatment. Twenty-three species, representing 12 families, emerged from the soil samples. The best-represented families were Poaceae and Asteraceae. All of the emerged species were herbs, 21 were annuals, and 14 were exotic to Chile. Fire-related triggers used in this study did not increase the emergence and/or abundance of exotic species with respect to natives in soil samples. Interestingly, this study provides evidence that heat-shock can increase the emergence of native herbs. 相似文献
