Predation on arboreal mammals is rarely observed in the wild. Here we describe the first confirmed observations of predation on a juvenile wild common marmoset (Callithrix jacchus) and on a neonate wild pale-throated three-toed sloth (Bradypus tridactylus) by the mustelid carnivore Eira barbara, the tayra. We discuss predation on both of the prey species and review the nature of predation by the tayra. 相似文献

Male mammals show rapid behavioral and hormonal responses to signals from sexually receptive females. However, rapid endocrine responses to female signals have not been observed in a nonhuman primate. Here, we tested the behavioral and hormonal response of male common marmosets (Callithrix jacchus) to isolated scent secretions from ovulatory females or to vehicle control scent. Fifteen males were tested in their home cage for behavioral and hormonal responses. These males showed increased investigative and arousal behaviors to the ovulatory scent compared to the vehicle scent. Time sniffing the scent substrate and the duration of erections were significantly elevated in relation to the vehicle scent. Thirty minutes after presentation of ovulatory scent, males showed a significant increase in testosterone compared to the vehicle, but there was no difference in cortisol values. To better control for scent presentation, 15 additional males were tested under a controlled scent exposure. Current social housing condition influenced the male's testosterone response to the ovulatory scent. Single and paired males showed significant increases in testosterone levels with the ovulatory scent but did not increase cortisol levels. Single males also showed the highest change in testosterone with the ovulatory scent, but fathers showed no changes. These results indicate that a rapid hormonal response to sexually arousing cues occurs in marmosets, and the data suggest that a male's social condition influences how he responds to sexually relevant cues. 相似文献

Vocal buffering of the stress response: exposure to conspecific vocalizations moderates urinary cortisol excretion in isolated marmosets 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
For many species, the presence of a significant social partner can lessen the behavioral and physiological responses to stressful stimuli. This study examined whether a single, individually specific, signature vocalization (phee call) could attenuate the physiological stress response that is induced in marmosets by housing them in short-term social isolation. Utilizing a repeated-measures design, adult marmosets (n=10) were temporarily isolated from their long-term pair mate and exposed to three conditions: signature vocalizations from the pair mate, phee calls from an unfamiliar opposite sex individual, or no auditory stimuli. Levels of urinary cortisol were monitored as a physiological indicator of the stress response. Urinary cortisol levels were also monitored, while subjects remained undisturbed in their home cages to provide baseline levels. Temporarily isolated marmosets showed significantly higher levels of urinary cortisol than undisturbed marmosets. However, the nature of the acoustic stimulus experienced during isolation led to differences in the excretion of urinary cortisol. Isolated marmosets exposed to a familiar pair mate's vocalization showed significantly lower levels of urinary cortisol than when exposed to unfamiliar marmoset vocalizations (P <0.04) or to no auditory stimuli (P <0.03). Neither the duration of pairing nor the quality of relationship in the pair (indexed by spatial proximity scores) predicted the magnitude of reduction in cortisol in the familiar vocalization condition. The results presented here provide the first evidence that a single, individually specific communication signal can decrease the magnitude of a physiological stress response in a manner analogous to the physical presence of a social partner, a process we term "vocal buffering." 相似文献

This study investigated the development of maternal recognition of infant calls in rhesus macaques (Macaca mulatta). Fifteen mothers and their offspring, of age ranging from several hours to 28 days, served as subjects of an experiment in which the offspring's distress vocalizations were recorded and then played back to their mothers simultaneously with those of an age-matched control infant. The proportion of time looking at, but not the proportion of orientations to the speaker playing the offspring's vocalizations increased significantly as a function of infant age. Specifically, mothers of infants older than 1 week of age responded longer to the playback of their own infant's calls than did mothers of younger infants. These findings provide the firt evidence that offspring recognition in macaques develops between the first and second week of the infant's life and are consistent with the hypothesis that mothers need to be exposed to their infants' calls in order to learn their acoustic characteristics. 相似文献

Common marmoset monkeys (Callithrix jacchus) live in small groups in which, usually, only a single female breeds and all group members provide infant care. When two females breed concurrently, however, they may commonly kill one another's infants, especially during the peripartum period. To investigate the mechanisms underlying infanticide by breeding females, we characterized responses of multiparous females to infants and determined circulating hormone levels in adult females during early pregnancy, late pregnancy, and the early postpartum period. Additionally, we compared the responses of postpartum females to their own infants and infants of other females (unfamiliar infants). Postpartum females were highly maternal toward both their own and unfamiliar infants, and showed no differences in their behavioral or hormonal responses to the two. During both early and late pregnancy, however, these females exhibited longer latencies to initially approach unfamiliar infants and spent less time carrying unfamiliar infants. Moreover, females spent less time carrying unfamiliar infants during late pregnancy than early pregnancy. Most late pregnant females never carried infants, and those that did rejected them quickly. Prolactin concentrations were higher and progesterone concentrations lower postpartum than in early or late pregnancy, while estradiol concentrations, the estradiol-to-progesterone ratio, and cortisol levels were higher during late pregnancy. Within reproductive conditions, however, maternal behaviors were not correlated with hormone levels. These results suggest that maternal responsiveness in marmosets may be attenuated during pregnancy, especially late pregnancy, and this may contribute to infanticide by breeding females. 相似文献

Olfactory cues can exert priming effects on many mammalian species. Paternally experienced marmosets, Callithrix jacchus, exposed to direct isolated olfactory contact with their own infant's scent show rapid decreases in testosterone levels within 20 min, whereas paternally inexperienced males do not. The following study tests whether there is a differential steroid response to exposure of infant scent from dependent infants (own and novel) and independent infants (own and novel). We examined the serum levels of estradiol, estrone, testosterone, dihydrotestosterone (DHT), and combined estrogens and androgens in eight male marmosets 20 min after exposure to isolated infant scent. Testosterone and androgen levels combined were significantly lower with exposure to own infant scent than a novel infant scent when the infants were at a dependent age but not at an independent age. Estrogen levels elevated significantly in response to own infant scent when the infants were at a dependent age but not at an independent age. These results suggest that marmoset fathers are more responsive to priming cues from related infants and hormonal responses from fathers are greatest when the infant is at a dependent age. 相似文献

We investigated a new method of urine collection in the common marmoset. We entered the cage as soon as the light cycle started
in the breeding room and collected urine from the animal directly without any restraint. We were able to take separate samples
from completely different individuals housed together for behavioral studies in the same cage. Urine and blood samples were
taken from individuals from late pregnancy through postpartum nursing period. Cortisol and prolactin concentrations measured
in urine were compared to those measured in blood to evaluate this collection method. LH/CG level in the urine samples was
also measured. Urine data in females indicated a tendency toward high cortisol values during late pregnancy, a sharp drop
before parturition, and increase after delivery. In females cortisol levels measured in blood closely resembled concentrations
measured in urine. Urine cortisol in males clearly indicated an increase postpartum, but the increase was not indicated in
plasma. Plasma and urine prolactin concentrations in females made a similar increase during lactation. Male's plasma prolactin
clearly indicated an increase directly proportional to strong behavioral contact with the infant. We also confirmed hormonal
changes during pregnancy, and postpartum ovulation and subsequent pregnancies, from urine LH/CG data. We found this method
extremely useful because of the high correlation between cortisol, prolactin and LH/CG data from blood and urine. Additionally,

Social stress is frequently used as a model for studying the neuroendocrine mechanisms underlying stress-induced behavioral inhibition, depression, and fear conditioning. It has previously been shown that social subordination may result in increased glucocorticoid release and changes in brain signaling systems. However, it is still an open question which neuroendocrine and behavioral differences are causes, and which are consequences of social status. Using juvenile rainbow trout of similar size and with no apparent differences in social history, we demonstrate that the ability to win fights for social dominance can be predicted from the duration of a behavioral response to stress, in this case appetite inhibition after transfer to a new environment. Moreover, stress responsiveness in terms of confinement-induced changes in plasma cortisol was negatively correlated to aggressive behavior. Fish that exhibited lower cortisol responses to a standardized confinement test were markedly more aggressive when being placed in a dominant social position later in the study. These findings support the view that distinct behavioral-physiological stress coping styles are present in teleost fish, and these coping characteristics influence both social rank and levels of aggression. 相似文献

In socially-bonding species, separation from familiar attachment figures is widely known to stimulate a physiological and behavioral stress response. This study investigated the hormonal and vocal responses of adult common marmosets to separation from familiar group members and to 24 hr of cohabitation with an unfamiliar opposite-sex conspecific. All subjects were removed from their home cages and placed into a novel environment for 20 min. In one group, marmosets were exposed to an unfamiliar, opposite-sex partner in the novel environment and remained paired with this partner for the 24 hr test period. In three other groups, marmosets experienced the novel environment alone and subsequently were returned to their original social- or single-housing condition, or kept separate from their social groups for a 24 h period. Blood samples were collected the day before, and at 30 min, 90 min, and at 24 h after separation. Cortisol responses were differentially affected by the length of separation and the presence of unfamiliar conspecifics. Brief separation followed by the return to the social group had minimal effect on plasma cortisol levels. All marmosets produced high levels of separation calls in the novel environment, but there was no apparent relationship between calling and cortisol levels. The lack of a temporal relationship between the production of distress vocalizations and serum cortisol has previously been noted in squirrel monkey and rhesus monkey infant separation studies; the behavioral and physiological responses to separation appear to be similarly dissociated in the marmoset. Adeno-associated virus (AAV) is a non-pathogenic human parvovirus that can infect both non-proliferating and proliferating cells. Owing to its favorable safety profile, AAV is regarded as suitable for clinical purposes such as gene therapy. The target cell types of AAV depend largely on the serotype. In the retina, AAV has been used to introduce exogenous genes into photoreceptors, and photoreceptor-specific enhancers/promoters are used in most cases. Therefore, serotype specificity of AAV in retinal subtypes is unclear, particularly in vitro. We compared its infection profile in mouse and monkey retinas using EGFP under the control of the CAG promoter, which expressed the gene ubiquitously and strongly regardless of cell type. AAV1, 8, and 9 infected the horizontal cells when an embryonic day-17 retina was used as a host. Amacrine cell was also a major target of AAVs, and a small number of rod photoreceptors were infected. When adult retinas were used as a host, the main target of AAV was Müller glia. A small number of rod photoreceptors were also infected. In the adult common marmoset retina, rod and cone photoreceptors were efficiently infected by AAV1, 8, and 9. A portion of the Müller glia and amacrine cells were also infected. In summary, the infection specificity of different AAV serotypes did not differ, but was dependent on the stage of the host retina. In addition, infection specificities differed between mature marmoset retinas and mature mouse retinas. 相似文献

Intramuscular administration of metachlopromide (2.5, 10, and 25 mg) induced increase in serum prolactin levels. Following 10 and 25 mg dose levels, prolactin levels were elevated at least for 8 hr. Single administration of metachlopromide failed to affect the nocturnal rise in circulating levels of testosterone. Daily treatment of metachlopromide (10 mg) for 30 days suppressed the nocturnal elevation of testosterone on day 28 of treatment. However, the hCG-stimulated testosterone production on day 30 was unaffected. The results of the present study demonstrate that metachlopromide-induced hyperprolactinemia in adult male common marmosets affects the hypothalamo-pituitary axis without any effect on testicular response to hCG. 相似文献

A non-invasive assay for measurement of oxytocin (OT) and vasopressin (AVP) in primates would enable researchers to study the relationship between the endocrine system and behavior without disturbing potentially endangered animals in their natural habitats. In order to test whether or not OT specifically would be measurable in the urine of a primate, 10 microCi of tritium-labeled OT were injected into the peripheral blood supply of four adult male common marmosets (Callithrix jacchus), with continuous urinary collection over 48 h. When urine was processed by HPLC separation and beta counting for radioactive clearance, the label was present in all samples in the fraction where OT elutes. Large amounts of OT were also seen in a fraction other than that containing the OT standard, indicating that OT is measurable but that it also undergoes substantial metabolic breakdown. In a second experiment, we isolated six common marmosets for 48 h and then exposed them to social contact to evaluate the effect of changing social stimuli on endogenous urinary measurement of both OT and AVP. Both were measured after HPLC separation to isolate the intact molecule and also to control for cross-reactivity with metabolites in subsequent RIA. Cortisol was also measured to objectively evaluate the stress response. A priori assumptions were that urinary OT and AVP would be lower during a period of isolation and higher during periods of social contact. These assumptions were met, leading us to conclude that peripheral OT and AVP are measurable via urinary assay and that such an assay is a valid means of evaluating social condition in this species. 相似文献

Stress is now recognized as a universal premorbid factor associated with many risk factors of various chronic diseases. Acute stress may induce an individual’s adaptive response to environmental demands. However, chronic, excessive stress causes cumulative negative impacts on health outcomes through “allostatic load”. Thus, monitoring the quantified levels of long-term stress mediators would provide a timely opportunity for prevention or earlier intervention of stressrelated chronic illnesses. Although either acute or chronic stress could be quantified through measurement of changes in physiological parameters such as heart rate, blood pressure, and levels of various metabolic hormones, it is still elusive to interpret whether the changes in circulating levels of stress mediators such as cortisol can reflect the acute, chronic, or diurnal variations. Both serum and salivary cortisol levels reveal acute changes at a single point in time, but the overall long-term systemic cortisol exposure is difficult to evaluate due to circadian variations and its protein-binding capacity. Scalp hair has a fairy predictable growth rate of approximately 1 cm/month, and the most 1 cm segment approximates the last month’s cortisol production as the mean value. Experimental primate embryology has been hampered by limited access to embryos. In addition to surgical techniques, the less stressful non-surgical technique of uterine flushing has been developed but has had only limitedly used in recovering pre-implantation embryos from marmoset monkeys. In this study, we introduce the use of ultrasonography during marmoset non-surgical uterine flushing to make the cannulation easier, to further reduce stress, and to ensure thorough uterine flushing. We were able to cannulate in 99% of the transcervical cannulation attempts, repeat the flushing up to 17 times with the same animal, and recover up to 90% of the ovulation products. We also found that 8-cell or earlier stage embryos could be frequently obtained by non-surgical uterine flushing at 4 or 5 days after ovulation. The easiness and effectiveness of this novel ultrasound-guided technique will enable more research groups to study marmoset embryology and facilitate progress in this field. 相似文献

We report on the permanent retirement of chimpanzees from biomedical research and on resocialization after long-term social isolation. Our aim was to investigate to what extent behavioral and endocrine measures of stress in deprived laboratory chimpanzees can be improved by a more species-typical social life style. Personality in terms of novelty responses, social dominance after resocialization and hormonal stress susceptibility were affected by the onset of maternal separation of infant chimpanzees and duration of deprivation. Chimpanzees, who were separated from their mothers at a younger age and kept in isolation for more years appeared to be more timid personalities, less socially active, less dominant and more susceptible to stress, as compared to chimpanzees with a less severe deprivation history. However, permanent retirement from biomedical research in combination with therapeutic resocialization maximizing chimpanzees' situation control resulted in reduced fecal cortisol metabolite levels. Our results indicate that chimpanzees can recover from severe social deprivation, and may experience resocialization as less stressful than solitary housing. 相似文献

Teeth from 18 marmosets, seven months to 5.8 years of age, were studied histologically. A minimum of one dark and one light band comprised one cemental annulation. Age was estimated by counting the number of annulations and adding four months to premolar and eight months to canine teeth for tooth development. Cemental annulations were most consistent near the gingival border on the labial aspect of the tooth. The method will be valuable in estimating the ages of marmosets and other nonhuman primates. 相似文献

A five-year-old female common marmoset (Callithrix jacchus) died after a one-month clinical course of nonspecific signs. Pathologic findings were acute diffuse fibrinonecrotizing enteritis and granulomatous endolymphangitis of intestinal and mesenteric lymphatic vessels. Both lesions were associated with a marked proliferation of Mayer's mucicarmine-positive, 4 to 15 microm yeasts that were surrounded by a wide clear halo. The infection was probably acquired by oral route. Other findings included moderate multifocal granulomatous and necrotizing hepatitis and mesangial nephropathy. Although the immunological status of this marmoset was unknown, cryptococcosis might induce primary lethal intestinal infections in callitrichids. 相似文献

The steroid dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate (DHEA-S) is associated with longevity and adaptation against external stress in humans. The aim of the study was to investigate the acute effect of a 30-min hot spring immersion at 41 °C on insulin resistance measures of 16 male subjects, in relation to DHEA-S level. To elucidate the role of DHEA-S in the coping against the heat stress, all subjects were evenly divided into lower and upper halves according to their baseline DHEA-S concentrations. The levels of glucose, insulin, blood pressure, and stress hormones (growth hormone, testosterone, and cortisol) in both groups were compared before and after hot spring immersion. The result shows that hot spring immersion significantly increased heart rate and reduced diastolic blood pressure, both of which were paralleled with a drop of DHEA-S concentration. Homeostasis model assessment for insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) and area under curve of glucose (GAUC) of oral glucose tolerance test were significantly increased by the hot spring immersion only in the Low DHEA-S group. Likewise, hot spring immersion caused an opposing effect on cortisol changes for the Low and High DHEA-S groups (+95% vs. −33%, p < 0.05), respectively. In conclusion, hot spring bathing induced insulin resistance confined only to those Low DHEA-S individuals. This response may be associated with a stress response such as increased cortisol levels. 相似文献

a conspecific that has recently received a piece of food, opened the other’s mouth forcefully, and picked food pieces out
of it. Tolerated mouth-to-mouth food transfers occurred between animals of both sexes. They were observed when the possessor
was subordinate as well as when it was dominant, and in four dyads they were observed in both directions. We argue that this

Intramuscular administration of metachlopromide (2.5, 5, and 10 mg) induced a dose-dependent increase in plasma prolactin levels. The magnitude and duration of metachlopromide-induced hyperprolactinemia were also dose related. However, metachlopromide treatment (5 mg/day) for 60 days failed to affect ovarian function in the common marmoset as evidenced by ovulatory plasma estradiol and progesterone profiles. During the pretreatment cycle, there was no consistent pattern in plasma prolactin levels depending on the stage of cycle. During lactation, higher levels of plasma prolactin were observed. 相似文献
