The seasonal cycle of Picromerus bidens L. (Heteroptera: Pentatomidae) is usually considered to be univoltine with an obligatory winter egg diapause. Seasonal adaptations of the species were studied in the laboratory and in field experiments. When reared under short-day photoperiodic conditions (L12:D12 and L14:D10), all females began to lay eggs synchronously soon after their emergence. However, in the females reared under long-day conditions (L18:D6 and L20:D4) and outdoors in June–July, oviposition was significantly delayed. This delay in reproduction induced by photoperiodic conditions and then spontaneously terminated was considered to be aestivation. Egg batches laid by females in the laboratory and in the field were kept at 25 °C for two months. From 30.8 to 93.8% of batches contained eggs which hatched without cold treatment between day 14 and 60 after oviposition. The proportion of eggs hatched was 17.7 to 20.9% in the short-day regimes, while it was significantly less (5.7 to 6.0%) under long-day conditions. It is concluded that in some eggs diapause is of low intensity and that if under natural conditions the first batches had been laid at the end of June, nymphs would have hatched at least from some eggs during the same season even without cold treatment. Such untimely hatching would have resulted in the death of nymphs and adults unprepared for overwintering. A photoperiodic response which induces aestivation in the early emerging adults in June–August may prevent early oviposition and occurrence of a second generation and thus maintains univoltinism in P. bidens. 相似文献

Abstract. Eggs laid by adult female Dianemobius nigrofasciatus , reared under long-day (LD 16 : 8 h, 25 °C) or short-day (LD 12 : 12 h, 25 °C) conditions from the nymphal stage, are kept at several constant temperatures. At 22.5–30.0 °C, eggs laid by long-day adults show lower incidences of diapause than those laid by short-day adults. In both eggs laid by adults under long-day conditions and those under short-day conditions, the higher the temperature at which the eggs are kept, the lower the incidence of diapause. When eggs of long-day adults are exposed to a low-temperature pulse (10 °C, 24 h) on the day of deposition (day 0), the incidence of diapause increases. The low-temperature pulse on day 1 does not increase the incidence of diapause. By contrast, when the eggs of short-day adults are exposed to a high-temperature pulse (35 °C, 24 h) on day 0 or day 1, the incidence of diapause decreases. The temperature pulses on day 0 are more effective at diapause prevention. Staining of diapause eggs by the Feulgen–Rossenbeck method shows that the eggs enter diapause at the blastoderm stage, which is on day 1 or day 2 at 25 °C. The exposure of adults to long days and higher temperatures prevents the eggs from entering diapause. In D. nigrofasciatus , embryonic diapause is controlled by maternal effects, adult photoperiod and temperature, and egg temperature before or at diapause. 相似文献

Cyclops kolensis Lill. forms dense populations in different water-bodies of the Upper Volga basin. In spring, when the other planktonic crustaceans have not yet appeared, C. kolensis is an important food object for fishes. Its active reproduction occurs from April to the beginning of June. A rapid accumulation of stage IV copepodids in the plankton occurs in June and at 12–14° they sink into the pelogene in a diapause stage. During the summer stagnation period the diapausing copepodids are distributed evenly over the bottom; their abundance here is 0.7–0.8 million ind. m-2 (Rybinsk reservoir). During storms and autumn active water mixing the copepodids together with detritus are disturbed and brought to the deepest, silt rich, part of the water-bodies. After the ice formation and at the beginning of bottom heating the diapausing copepodids are transported by near bottom currents and are concentrated in depressions; their biomass here reaches 60 g m-3. After the thermo-oxy-cline formation they revive and begin to live actively. Copepodids feed, accumulate adipose matter and in February–March they begin to moult. 相似文献

A mechanism for the upward translocation of phosphorus by flake-forming Aphanizomenon is hypothesized. Aphanizomenon germinates on oxic sediments and rises into the water column, then the flakes diurnally migrate. Observations from Spring Lake, Minnesota, U.S.A., indicate that Aphanizomenon translocates phosphorus to the summertime epilimnion. However, the observations cannot discriminate between which of two mechanisms related to Aphanizomenon flakes, upon germination or with subsequent diurnal migrations, is more important. 相似文献

Daphnia can alter its vertical position in the water column in response to chemical cues from predators. In this study we tested the hypothesis that a Daphnia pulex clone with little evolutionary exposure to cyanobacteria would move away from patches of cyanobacteria (Anabaena affinis and A. flos-aquae) which contain potent endotoxins. Daphnia was censused at 2 h intervals for 6 h in laboratory columns in which there was a steep vertical gradient of cyanobacteria. Data were analyzed by repeated-measures ANOVA. Control (no Anabaena) and experimental columns showed no significant differences in Daphnia distributions. Daphnia in experimental columns frequently moved into areas with dense concentrations of Anabaena and stayed there for long periods of time. Our results show that this D. pulex clone does not exhibit a rapid (within 6 h) avoidance response to toxic Anabaena. 相似文献

Summary We investigate how body size of two coexisting Daphnia species varies among 7 lakes that represent a gradient of predation risk. The two species segregate vertically in stratified lakes; D. galeata mendotae is typically smaller and more eplimnetic than D. pulicaria. The extent of vertical habitat partitioning, however, varies seasonally within and among lakes in apparent response to predation intensity by epilimnetic planktivorous fishes. Daphnia pulicaria uses the epilimnion at low levels of fish predation but is restricted to the hypolimnion under high fish predation, whereas D. galaeta mendotae always utilizes the epilimnion. The species display contrasting patterns of genetic variation in neonate size and size at maturity. D. pulicaria is larger in lakes with higher fish and Chaoborus densities whereas D. galeata mendotae is smaller. This contrast in body size in lakes with high predation is associated with greater habitat segregation in those lakes. Our knowledge concerning the mechanisms of cell cycle regulation in organisms belonging to the Trypanosometidae family is limited. Leishmania donovani are parasitic protozoa that cause kala azar, a fatal form of visceral leishmaniasis in humans. Here we provide evidence that the L. donovani genome contains a Cdc20 homologue. Cdc20 is a regulator of the Anaphase Promoting Complex/Cyclosome (APC/C) that mediates ubiquitin-dependent proteasomal degradation of key cell cycle regulators in eukaryotes. We show that L. donovani Cdc20 protein (LdCdc20p) can complement a lack of yeast Cdc20 protein in Saccharomyces cerevisiae cells, validating the functionality of LdCdc20p. Furthermore, we demonstrate cyclic expression of LdCdc20p and that it contains an active RXXL destruction motif, a distinctive feature of proteins targeted for proteasomal degradation by APC/C. Finally, in line with the proteasome mediating LdCdc20p degradation, promastigotes exposed to proteasome inhibitor display elevated LdCdc20p levels. Taken together our data indicate that Leishmania regulate their cell cycle by ubiquitin-dependent proteasomal degradation mediated by the APC/C. 相似文献

The effects of notonectid-induced crests on growth and reproduction, and resource allocation to crest construction, moult losses and eggs of Daphnia carinata were measured. An attempt was made to elucidate the mechanisms of physiological costs of crest induction for this species. The crested morph of d. carinata reached a significantly larger size than the uncrested form. Reproductive output was similar in early instars, but the crested morph produced more eggs in latter broods. Instar duration was longer for the crested morph and age at first reproduction was delayed. Survival was also lower in this form. Crest construction required significant resources (equivalent to 60 eggs over a life time) but evidence is presented that these resources were obtained primarily by re-allocation of available material rather than collection of extra resources. The crested morph allocated significantly more resources to moulting than its uncrested counter-parts. The uncrested morph produced large eggs in early instars and progressively smaller ones in later instars. The crested morph produced only small eggs. The hypothesis is presented that the crest-induction strategy of D. carinata involves at least two separate sets of responses, each with its own costs and trade-offs. The first response is production of the crest. The cost of crest production is an increased cost of moulting. D. carinata off sets this cost by increasing instar duration and thus age at reproduction. The second response is increased size. D. carinata achieves this by reducing the fraction of available resources allocated to reproduction. The cost is lower reproductive output. 相似文献

Summary The present paper describes the construction and properties of a Pt/Ir-semi-microelectrode and its application as a redoxsensitive electrode in intact cells of the giant algaNitella. For compartmental analysis of the stationary redox-state voltage (ERED), a value reflecting the interaction of the dominant redox couples with a Pt/Ir-electrode, the redox-sensitive electrode was inserted into the vacuole of leaf cells or cytoplasm enriched fragments (CEF) fromNitella internodal cells. After correction for the membrane voltage, measured with a second, conventional voltage electrode, ERED values of+237±93mVand+419±51 mV with respect to a normal H+-electrode were obtained for cytoplasm and vacuole, respectively. The redox-state of the cell culture medium was+604 mV. The steady state ERED in the cytoplasm can be perturbed by experimental treatments: indirect acidification of the cytoplasm by an external pH jump from 7.5 to 5.8 and direct acidification, by acid loading with 5 mM butyrate, both resulted in a positive shift of ERED, i.e., to an increase in cytoplasmic oxidation. At the same time the membrane depolarized electrically following the external pH jump, but hyperpolarized in response to acid loading. The data demonstrate the direct dependence of cytoplasmic redox state on intracellular pH, probably due to enhanced oxidation of protonated redox couples favoured by mass action. The electrical membrane voltage changes were not correlated with the shift in cytoplasmic ERED. This demonstrated that redox energy does not determine the electrical membrane voltage. Cytoplasmic ERED was also affected by photosynthesis. When CEFs were transferred from light to dark, or exposed to 10M 3-(3,4-dichlorophenyl)-1,l-dimethylurea (DCMU), ERED shifted negatively (more reduced) by 6.4±4.5mV or 4.2±2mV, respectively. These data compare favourably with biochemical estimates of cytoplasmic pyridin nucleotides which also show an increase in cytoplasmic reduction in the dark. The life cycle and biological characteristics of the nuisance midge, Hydrobaenus kondoi Sæther were studied in 1989–90 at the middle reaches of the Kiso River, Japan. A study of seasonal abundance of both adults and larvae revealed that the Kiso River population was bivoltine. In laboratory cultures, the species required 840.7 degree-days to complete the life cycle. Larvae built a cocoon in the second instar for aestivation during the high temperatures of summer. The cocoons were found attached to sand grains in shallow water near shore. 相似文献

Six different pH ranges were tested for the hatching rate of Triops cancriformis cysts. Cumulative hatching numbers approach to approximately 50% of cysts. The highest hatching rates, co-occurring with
the shortest hatching times, were recorded in the neutral range. No hatching took place at pH values 9 and above. This corresponds

Detailed zooplankton records from a 26-cm sediment core with a time resolution of approximately 3–10 years were obtained from Lake Biwa, Japan, to examine the historical variations in the zooplankton community during the 20th century. In the sediments, selected zooplankton remains have fluctuated over the years. Daphnia – large zooplankton herbivores – did not occur from 1900 to 1920, and formed a very minor component of the zooplankton community in the following 30 years, while Bosmina – small zooplankton herbivores – were common during this period. In the mid-1960s, however, when eutrophication was noticeable in this lake, Daphnia numbers increased dramatically and became the dominant zooplankton thereafter. In contrast, Difflugia brevicolla and D. biwae, two amoeboid protozoans that live in connection with the lake bottom environment, occurred abundantly until the late 1950s, but gradually decreased after the mid-1960s. In particular, D. biwae, a species peculiar to this lake, was not found in sediment dated after 1980, suggesting its extinction. These results indicate that the zooplankton community structure changed greatly in the 1960s, and suggest that the eutrophication occurring at this time altered the relative strength of top-down and bottom-up forces on the zooplankton community in Lake Biwa. 相似文献

In an analysis of a life table experiment involving positively, intermediately and negatively phototactic Daphnia magna clones, life history traits such as the average duration of the adult instar, neonate and adult body size were found to be correlated with phototactic behaviour. The size of the eggs and neonates was positively correlated with adult body size, and with egg development time. Adult body size was positively correlated with the size of the second and subsequent clutches. I argue that the intrinsic positive correlation between offspring size and egg development time is a key factor structuring the differences in life history patterns observed between the positively and intermediately phototactic Daphnia genotypes, and that the two life history patterns are to be considered alternatives suited for different environmental conditions (e.g. habitats with and without strong predation pressure on adults). 相似文献

Summary Growth and reproduction of twoDaphnia species (Cladocera) from Lake Constance were measured experimentally in a through-flow laboratory system under different food conditions, in order to investigate the effect of food quality on zooplankton populations. The cryptomonadRhodomonas sp. and the diatomStephanodiscus hantzschii were used as food. BothDaphnia species grew well at concentrations of 0.2–2.0 mgC/l ofRhodomonas sp., and 0.4–2.0 mgC/l ofS. hantzschii, whileStephanodiscus concentrations of 0.2 mgC/l did not supportDaphnia growth. Nitrogen content, which was very different in the two algae (C/N ratio = 4.9 forRhodomonas and 10.9 forS. hantzschii), was presumed to be the limiting factor. To test this hypothesis, nitrogen-limitedRhodomonas was offered to the cladocerans and their growth observed: the reduction in algal nitrogen content hindered animals' growth and reproduction. Results suggested that zooplankton production may also be affected by the chemical composition of the food algae, and that nitrogen potentially limits production, even in freshwater environments that are generally not N-limited. 相似文献

Ion-gradient-coupled transport systems in plants are normally electrophoretic and carry inward current. Rapid inward electrical currents elicited by K+, by urea and by lysine in the freshwater acidophilic alga Nitella translucens Agh. are all very strongly dependent on the presence of Na+ or (except in the case of K+) Li+. These results indicate that Na+-coupled solute transport in plants, which had previously been demonstrated only in an alkalophilic species (Chara australis), did not evolve recently as an alternative to H+-coupled transport in high-pH environments, and might therefore be more widely distributed than has hitherto been recognised.We are very grateful to Professor E.A.C. Exposing Daphnia to the presence of a predator at different stages of ontogenesis leads to different reactions. Predator-induced changes of life history parameters related to the first reproduction schedule, as age and size at first reproduction, take place in the stage preceding that one in which vitellogenesis occurs. Determination of the amount of energy allocated to this first reproduction, including offspring number, occurs in the first 24-h of life. In case of parameters related to reproduction schedule, time since induction until the release of the first clutch of offspring is tens of hours; in case of allocation patterns – more than 100. This suggests that Daphnia do not remember the information of a potential threat but, instead, the decisions on future development are undertaken once they have estimated the reigning predation regime. Shortening of the period during which eggs are carried in the brood chamber, thus shortening the time when Daphnia are more easily visible, may be another adaptation to reduce danger from fish predation and so increasing the probability of survival until the first successful reproduction. 相似文献
