The aims of this study were to determine the wood chemical composition of 25 species of Cactaceae and to relate the composition to their anatomical diversity. The hypothesis was that wood chemical components differ in relationship to their wood features. The results showed significant differences in wood chemical compounds across species and genera (< 0.05). Pereskia had the highest percentage of lignin, whereas species of Coryphantha had the lowest; extractive compounds in water were highest for Echinocereus, Mammillaria, and Opuntia. Principal component analysis showed that lignin proportion separated the fibrous, dimorphic, and non‐fibrous groups; additionally, the differences within each type of wood occurred because of the lignification of the vascular tissue and the type of wall thickening. Compared with other groups of species, the Cactaceae species with fibrous and dimorphic wood had a higher lignin percentage than did gymnosperms and Acer species. Lignin may confer special rigidity to tracheary elements to withstand desiccation without damage during adverse climatic conditions.  相似文献

DNA Isolation and Amplification from Cacti   总被引:2,自引:1,他引:1
The cacti family is a morphologically heterogeneous group comprising 100 genera and about 1500 species (Hernandez and Barcenas, 1996). With the exception of one genus, all members of this family are native to America (Hernandez and Barcenas, 1996). There are three subfamilies, Opuntioideae, Cactoideae, and Pereskioideae (Gibson and Nobel, 1986). DNA isolation from cacti is notoriously difficult because they contain high amounts of polysaccharides and secondary metabolites which form insoluble complexes with nucleic acids during extraction (Guillemaut and Marechal-Drouard, 1992). Like in other groups of plants, the secondary metabolites and polysaccharides in cacti inhibit enzyme action (Porebski et al., 1997). The polysaccharides are visually evident by their viscous, glue-like texture and they make the DNA unmanageable when pipeting and hard to amplify by the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) (Poresbski et al., 1997). We report an easy and inexpensive protocol to isolate DNA from cacti. We used this method to isolate DNA from 85 species (170 individuals) of 39 genera of the subfamilies Pereskioideae, Opuntioidea, and Cactoideae. This procedure is a modification of a protocol described by De la Cruz et al. (1995) for the Cacti family. It requires only a few grams of tissue and does not require destruction of the whole plant to produce high molecular weight genomic DNA. The DNA from this procedure can be amplified consistently by PCR and used for RAPD analysis.  相似文献

The historical definition of adaptations has come into wide use as comparative biologists have applied methods of phylogenetic analysis to a variety of evolutionary problems. Here we point out a number of difficulties in applying historical methods to the study of adaptation, especially in cases where a trait has arisen but once. In particular, the potential complexity of the genetic correlations among phenotypic traits, performance variables and fitness makes inferring past patterns of selection from comparative data difficult. A given pattern of character distribution may support many alternative hypotheses of mechanism. While phylogenetic data are limited in their ability to reveal evolutionary mechanisms, they have always been an important source of adaptive hypotheses and will continue to be so.  相似文献

Mistletoes represent the best example of specialization in seed dispersal, with a reduced assemblage of dispersal agents. Specific dispersal requirements mediated by the specificity of seed deposition site have apparently led to the evolution of such close relationships between mistletoes and certain frugivores. Here, we provide evidences for another case of specialization involving epiphytic cacti in the genus Rhipsalis, and small Neotropical passerines Euphonia spp., which also act as the main seed dispersers of mistletoes in the family Viscaceae. With field observations, literature search, and observations on captive birds, we demonstrated that Rhipsalis have specific establishment requirements, and euphonias are the most effective dispersers of Rhipsalis seeds in both quantitative and qualitative aspects, potentially depositing seeds onto branches of host plants. We interpret the similar dispersal systems of Rhipsalis and Viscaceae mistletoes, which involve the same dispersal agents, similar fruit morphologies, and fruit chemistry as convergent adaptive strategies that enable seeds of both groups to reach adequate microsites for establishment in host branches.  相似文献

This research examined the hypothesis that as cacti evolve tothe leafless condition, the stem epidermis and cortex becomemore leaflike and more compatible with a photosynthetic role. All cacti in the relict genus Pereskia have non-succulent stemsand broad, thin leaves. All members of the derived subfamilyCactoideae are ‘leafless’, having an expanded cortexthat is the plant's only photosynthetic tissue. In Pereskia, leaves have a high stomatal density (mean: 50.7 stomata mm–2in the lower epidermis, 38.1 mm–2 in the upper epidermis),but stems have low stomatal densities (mean: 11.3 mm 2, threeof the species have none). Stems of Cactoideae have a high stomataldensity (mean: 31.1 mm–2, all species have stomata). Theouter cortex cells of stems of Cactoideae occur in columns, forming a palisade cortex similar to a leaf palisade parenchyma. In this palisade cortex, the fraction of tissue volume availablefor gas diffusion has a mean volume of 12.9%, which is identicalto that of Pereskia leaf palisade parenchyma. Pereskia stemcortex is much less aerenchymatous (mean: 5.3% of cortex volume).Cactoideae palisade cortex has a high internal surface density(0.0207 cm2 cm–2 which is higher than in Pereskia stemcortex (0.0150 cm2 cm–3) but not as high as Pereskia leafpalisade parenchyma (0.0396 cm2 cm–3). Pereskia stem cortexhas no cortical bundles, but Cactoideae cortexes have extensivenetworks of collateral vascular bundles that resemble leaf veins. The cactus family is unusual among tropical plants. Cacti, known for their minimum water requirement, have been grown extensively in arid lands, for food, feeds and medicinal and therapeutic uses.Several food products have cacti as a main ingredient. Cacti biochemical analysis substantiate the high nutritive value of this plant family. Tissue cultures, including micropropagation, callus, and cell suspension cultures have been established for numerous cacti species. Genetic engineering has opened opportunities for gene isolation and integration of genes from other sources for cacti improvement. Cacti might be a store house of stress tolerant genes for other crops. Since cacti can be cultivated easily with minimum agriculture inputs, they hold great potential for cultivation and farming on degraded lands and for at least partial remediation of degraded lands. The present review outlines some of the older and more recent research on the properties and applications for Opuntia and other cacti especially as they might apply towards agricultural sustainability.  相似文献

Cortical Bundles in the Persistent, Photosynthetic Stems of Cacti   总被引:2,自引:2,他引:0
We examined 62 species in 45 genera of the cactus subfamilyCactoideae; all had collateral cortical bundles that permeatedthe broad, water-storing inner cortex and extended to the baseof the outer, photosynthetic palisade cortex. Mean distancebetween cortical bundles was 0.75 mm, similar to the mean spacing(0.74 mm) of veins in leaves of Pereskia, a genus of relictleaf-bearing cacti. In 16 species, both young and extremelyold stem cortex was available for study: in all of these, olderbundles had larger amounts of phloem than did younger bundles, indicating that phloem had been produced for many years. Inten species, older bundles also had more xylem than youngerbundles. In two genera (Rhipsalis and Selenicereus) there werecaps of primary phloem fibres, and in a single species (Pilosocereusmortensenii) cortical bundle xylem contained libriform fibres. All cortical bundle tracheary elements were narrow (radius range,0.91–8.2 µm; mode, 1.8–2.7 µm), similarto Pereskia leaf vein elements (radius range, 1.8–2.7µm); this was much narrower than stem wood vessels (radiusrange, 10–42 um; mode, 23–28 µm). Longitudinalconduction of water and nutrients probably occurs predominantlyin stem wood, with cortical bundles maintaining the broad, voluminouscortex, the outer part of which is the plant's photosynthetictissue and the inner part of which stores water and starch. The cortex of the Cactordeae contains numerous leaflike characters;homeotic genes may be involved in its morphogenesis. Respiratory Adaptations in Marine Mammals   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
This paper is a discussion of some of the possible structuraland functional modifications of the lung which represent adaptationsin mammals living in the sea. Lung capacities of marine mammalsseem to be larger than terrestrial mammals especially if theyare compared on a lean weight basis. It is proposed that atleast in some this represents an important increase in buoyancywhich enables these mammals to rest at sea. The importance ofthe lung as an O2 store during dives is considered, and it seemsthat it would be important only to those species that have alow breath-hold tolerance. In their case the O2 present in thefully inflated lung is from four times to equal that in theblood. In those species with a large breath-hold tolerance thelung O2 store is a small fraction of blood stores. Several experimentsare discussed which indicate that during dives to depth gasexchange between the blood and lungs is low. One of the reasonssuggested is compression collapse of the alveoli. This occursbecause of the apparent rigidity of the airways which even inthe terminal segments possess an unusual amount of muscularor cartilaginous support. The reinforcement insures that duringcompression the airways will not occlude and trap gas in thealveoli. In fact, in some species, especially otariids and cetaceans, the airways seem overly strong and an additional function issuggested. Studies of mechanical properties of sea lion andwhale lungs show that they may be capable of high expiratoryflow rates at low volumes. This feature of the lung would makepossible an exchange of a large gas volume in very short periods.Such an ability is consistent with the ventilatory behaviorof many marine mammals.  相似文献

A field study of baboon behavior as it relates to crop-raiding was conducted on the Kenya Coast. The results proved useful for quantifying the distribution, movement, and other factors of their behavior. Such variables as troop organization, crop season, and the behavior of the farmers influence raiding behavior. Apparently diversionary activities of crop-raiding baboons result from troop distribution along habitat margins between farms and forest and from baboon vigilance behavior.  相似文献

Abstract

The properties of haemoglobin oxygen dissociation curves and the Bohr effect have, been studied in various poikiloterms animals living in different ecological conditions. The position of the curve and the direction and the intensity of the Bohr effect are perfectly correlated with the ecological habit of the organism under examination. Both these parameters are regulated by cofactors modifiyng the properties of the haemoglobin. An increase in the Bohr effect, probably with evolutionary adaptive value has been found in the indian peruvian population living from generation at high altitude. Also in this case the increase in Bohr effect is due to some factor presente in the red cell and different by the organic phosphates.  相似文献

We examined the potential for exploitation competition by differential attractiveness in two sympatric species of columnar cacti on Curaçao, Netherlands Antilles. Stenocereus griseus and Subpiloccreus repandus have temporally overlapping flowering phenologies and share pollinators. We examined nectar volume, energy contents, and sugar ratios for the entire night and at two-hour intervals in both cactus species. Except for a burst in nectar volume and sugar concentration by Subpilocereus repandus during the first two hours of anthesis, nectar secretion patterns, energy contents, and sugar ratios (70% hexose) were similar for the two species. The standing crops of nectar in both species were kept very low by bat pollinators. We suggest that the potential for exploitation competition between Stenocereus griscus and Subpilocereus repandus is currently very low on Curapo.  相似文献

SYNOPSIS: Intertidal rockpools provide a challenging environmentfor rockpool fish with rapid changes taking place in many environmentalparameters over a tidal cycle. Intertidal fish exhibit a numberof behavioural adaptations such as the avoidance of hypoxicsituations or remaining inactive during aerial "stranding."Other species are, however, well adapted to breathe air andexhibit morphological adaptations such as smaller gill areas, specialized buccopharyngeal epithelia and a proliferation ofcutaneous blood vessels in the skin. Oxygen consumption in rockpoolfish is comparable to non-intertidal fish and responds in asimilar manner to temperature changes. The ability to regulateoxygen consumption down to oxygen tensions below 40 Torr is,however, marked in rockpool species. Aerial and aquatic ratesof respiration are similar in those species which are able tobreathe air and the respiratory quotient normally remains between0.7 and 0.9. A number of intertidal fish are well adapted forcutaneous respiration, satisfying over half of their oxygenand carbon dioxide exchange through the skin. Ventilatory responsesto increased temperature, hyperoxia and hypoxia are similarto those of other fish but cardiac responses may differ in thatno change in heart rate is seen under hypoxia or hyperoxia.Ventilatory and cardiac responses to aerial respiration arewell adapted in some species maintaining ventilation and perfusionduring aerial exposure. A marked Bohr effect, low temperaturesensitivity and a temperature dependent Haldane effect havebeen measured in the haemoglobolin of some intertidal fish. These properties may assist oxygen transport and carbon dioxideexchange during cyclical changes in environmental parameterswithin an intertidal rockpool.  相似文献

Physiological characteristics of polar bryophytes are discussed in relation to geographical distribution patterns, current polar climates, and the environmental history of the polar regions. The most significant attributes conferring fitness in contemporary polar environments appear to be phenotypic plasticity, opportunistic responses in CO2, exchange, and poikilohydrous water relations leading to considerable tolerance of desiccation and frost. These features are widely distributed among bryophytes generally, and cannot be regarded as specific adaptations to polar conditions. This conclusion is consistent with the fact that most members of the polar bryophyte floras range widely in boreal forest, and in many cases also temperate regions. They are believed to have evolved under temperate conditions before the advent of polar environments during Tertiary climatic cooling, and they are characterized by an evolutionarily conservative life strategy. However, such species may show inherent, inter-population variation of an apparently adaptive nature in morphological or physiological characters. A small, contrasting assemblage of Arctic-endemic species, so far uninvestigated physiologically, shows high fertility and is suspected as being of more recent, possibly Pleistocene origin.  相似文献

Herbivory in Crabs: Adaptations and Ecological Considerations   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
Plant material is the major source of nutrition for many speciesof crabs in both marine and terrestrial habitats. Physical andchemical characteristics of plants can lead to difficultiesin harvesting and ingestion, to low digestability, unpalatabilityand toxicity, and to deficiencies in specific nutrients, especiallynitrogen, vitamins and fatty acids. We describe the range ofherbivory in crabs, as well as the anatomical, physiologicaland behavioral adaptations that enhance nutrient acquisitionfrom plant material. We assess the impact of herbivory by crabson plant communities, and highlight topics for further research.  相似文献
