A new hypothesis of the origin of the plague microbe in the Mongolian bobak (Marmota sibirica Radde, 1862) populations in Central Asia during the Pleistocene is based on the ideas of its relative phylogenetic recency. The Late Pleistocene cooling, which induced a deep freezing of the grounds in southern Siberia, Mongolia, and Manchuria, is considered as an inducer of speciation. The main ecological factors of the plague microbe evolution include the species specific behavior of the Mongolian bobak as it prepared to hibernate related to its occurrence in arid petrophytic landscapes and the larval parasitism of the flea Oropsylla silantiewi Wagn., 1898 in winter. Genesis of the plague foci is divided into two periods: natural-historical and biosocial. During the first period, the primary natural foci in Eurasia were formed and, during the second period, synanthropic (rat) and secondary natural foci appeared with the participation of humans in Africa, The New World, and on some tropical islands.  相似文献

The theory of natural focality of human diseases, basically formulated by Academician E.N. Pavlovsky in 1939, invigorated research on plague, the disease whose epidemics had taken millions of lives in the past. Numerous studies in Russia and abroad have provided a great amount of data on the pathogen, its carriers, and vectors, specific features of infection spread and dynamics of activity of natural plague foci. Over a long period, plague was considered to be an obligate transmissible zoonosis. However, recent laboratory experiments and direct observations in natural foci of this infection indicate that plague is probably a zoophilous sapronosis.  相似文献

Information on the epizootic situation in plague in the natural foci of North Caucasus and on the influence of a number of anthropogenic and natural factors on this situation is presented. The data given in this work indicate that under the conditions of the anthropogenic transformation of landscapes the character of the epizootic manifestations of plague is changed and new factors, capable of aggravating epidemiological situation, appear. In addition, some other factors must be considered, such as the insufficient financing of reliable field surveys at present, the impossibility of making reliable epizootological studies due to causes of the social character (armed conflicts), thus making it impossible to evaluate, with a sufficient degree of reliability, the real epizootic state of a number of territories and, therefore, the risk of human infection. In this connection the necessity to carefully plan prophylactic measures and measures aimed at the localization and liquidation of the probable foci of infection arises.  相似文献

To maintain continuous circulation of plague pathogen in natural foci, the pathogen should be capable of invading host organism, resisting the bactericide protective systems of rodent, and reproducing itself to maintain the content of bacteria at a level sufficient for further transmission by fleas to a new host. Each of these stages of the Yersinia pestis circulation is determined by a variety of factors of plague pathogen, which may act either individually or in combination. Each of the factors itself may be involved in the pathological process at different stages of its development or in pathogen transmission. However, it is only the aggregate of the factors (regardless of significant or insignificant individual contribution to the sum effect) that provides persistence of plague pathogen in natural foci. The plague pathogen factors providing its transmission from one host organism to the next as well as correlation of individual factors of pathogensis and expression of various household genes with plague pathogensis virulence are considered in the second communication. This review was compiled on the basis of not only well-known works but also some sources of limited availability, particularly, for English-speaking audience.  相似文献

The analysis of morbidity in infections with natural foci in Russia for the period of 1999-2000 indicates that a rise in the number of cases of hemorrhagic fever with the renal syndrome, tick-borne encephalitis, Crimean hemorrhagic fever and West Nile fever with a high proportion of urban population among the patients is registered annually. An increase in the epizootic activity of the natural foci of plague is noted in the absence of morbidity among humans. The appearance of the outbreaks of tularemia is linked nor only with the increased activity of the natural foci, but also with the reduced coverage of the population with prophylactic immunization in endemic regions. This analysis infers that morbidity prognosis in infections with natural foci for 2001 remains unfavorable. The growth of morbidity in these infections is mainly due to the reduction of measures for controlling their vectors both is open nature and in settlements, as well as to low coverage with prophylactic immunization. Urgent complex measures which may ensure effective antiepidemic and prophylactic work for controlling infections with natural foci are presented.  相似文献

Background

Rhombomys opimus (great gerbil) is a reservoir of Yersinia pestis in the natural plague foci of Central Asia. Great gerbils are highly resistant to Y. pestis infection. The coevolution of great gerbils and Y. pestis is believed to play an important role in the plague epidemics in Central Asia plague foci. However, the dynamics of Y. pestis infection and the corresponding antibody response in great gerbils have not been evaluated. In this report, animal experiments were employed to investigate the bacterial load in both the liver and spleen of infected great gerbils. The dynamics of the antibody response to the F1 capsule antigen of Y. pestis was also determined.

Methodology

Captured great gerbils that tested negative for both anti-F1 antibodies and bacterial isolation were infected subcutaneously with different doses (105 to 1011 CFU) of a Y. pestis strain isolated from a live great gerbil during routine plague surveillance in the Junggar Basin, Xinjiang, China. The clinical manifestations, changes in body weight, anal temperature, and gross anatomy of the infected animals were observed. The blood cell count, bacterial load, and anti-F1 antibody titers were determined at different time points after infection using a blood analyzer, plate counts, and an indirect hemagglutination assay, respectively.

Conclusions/Significance

The dynamics of bacterial load and the anti-F1 antibody concentration in great gerbils are highly variable among individuals. The Y. pestis infection in great gerbils could persist as long as 15 days. They act as an appropriate reservoir for plague in the Junggar Basin, which is part of the natural plague foci in Central Asia. The dynamics of the Y. pestis susceptibility of great gerbil will improve the understanding of its variable resistance, which would facilitate the development of more effective countermeasures for controlling plague epidemics in this focus.  相似文献

The work deals with the results of the study of the viability of Y. pestis strains, isolated from voles in different natural foci of plague, in human normal serum (HNS) and its dependence on the assimilation of ions of exogenic iron. The cultures isolated at the Transcaucasian mountain focus of infection and having no small plasmid pYP were found highly sensitive to HNS. The introduction of the sources of iron, such as hemoglobin or ferritin, into the serum decreased its bactericidal effect.  相似文献

Forty strains of tularemia and 619 of plague microbes were isolated in 1974 in bacteriological examination of natural plague and tularemia foci from a great number of small mammals and their ectoparasites. At the same time in serological examination (in the antibody neutralization test) of bird pellets, 52 mummified cadavers, and 34 excretion samples of mammalian beasts of prey collected in Armenia (its central and North-Western part) in 1973 the antigen of tularemia microbe was revealed in 73, 8, and 3, and of plagye--in 42, 5, and 1 cases, respectively. In one of the sites examined the number of positive findings failed to exceed 10--17%, this indicating a low intensity of the epizootic in the majority of the places. Judging by the mean titres of the serological test, which varied from 1:12 to 1:1428 in examination for tularemia and from 1:12 to 1428 in examination for plague, it was possible to detect both epizootics coursing during the examination, and those which occurred several monts ago. Tularemia and plague foci were not infrequently present at the same territories, and these diseases could involve the same individual animals of Microtus arvalis (Pall.). The data obtained pointed to the greater effectiveness of examination of bird's pellets and excretions of mammalian beasts of prey for the reconnaisance investigation of the natural foci of plague and tularemia in comparison with the bacteriological methods applied usually.  相似文献

A total of 257 foci of meningococcal infection in groups of servicemen were selectively examined in 1982-2002. From these groups 353 patients with generalized forms of the disease underwent hospitalization. Most of the foci had a single infection, the proportion of foci with 10-40 patients was 82.6%. The meningococcal infection rate among humans in the foci was 25-37%, group A meningococci playing the leading role. In the structure of meningococcal infection generalized forms of infection constituted 16%, localized forms constituted 25% and inapparent forms (carriers)--59%. The formation of the morbidity structure was influenced by the type of the focus (with a single or multiple infection) and the character of morbidity for many years (during epidemic or at the period between epidemics). No absolute dependence of the level of meningococcal carrier state in the groups of servicemen on the appearance of the generalized forms of meningococcal infection was noted. Thus, both during epidemic and at the period between epidemics the population of meningococci, heterogeneous in its serological structure and differing in its clinical and epidemiological importance, constantly circulated with the leading role played by group A meningococci.  相似文献

Results of serological examination of 81,853 mammals from the Muyunkum and 26,303 from the Eastern Kyzylkum deserts were compared with results of a corresponding bacteriological examination for plague. In both foci and in all phases throughout the epizootic of plague, the serological method made it possible to detect infected animals 6-10 times more frequently in comparison with the bacteriological method. The big meriones mice, i.e., the basic carriers of plague in natural foci, were found to be infected considerably more (in percentage) frequently than the meridian meriones. Differences in the reactivity of meriones to the invasion of plague microbe were observed in both foci (the indices of titres in the antigen neutralization reaction were considerably higher in the Eastern Kyzylkums). The serological method of investigation is highly informative in evaluating both the present state of epizootic activity of a plague focus and its activity in the past.  相似文献

Application of the methods developed by the author to the plague causative agent isolated in six natural plague foci provided detection of its ability to synthesize a factor inhibiting the growth of the producing strain and cultures isolated from the same focus. In the strains isolated from these foci the inhibitor presence was stable on the agar consisting of fermentative casein hydrolysate and 0.6 per cent of lithium chloride when the indicator strains were incubated under definite temperature conditions. The results of the present study and previous studies of the author, as well as the literature data suggested that the ability to synthesize the inhibitor is a stable feature of the plague causative agent.  相似文献

This work presents the data on the complex evaluation of the population of group A streptococci, studied at each of four phases (reservation, epidemic transformation, epidemic spread, reservational transformation) of the course of the epidemic process of streptococcal infection of the respiratory tracts (tonsillitis) in an organized group of adults. The characterization of the phases of the infective agent in accordance with the level of the carrier state, the size of streptococcal foci and the virulence of streptococci is given. Thus, the study shows that the heterogeneity of group A streptococci with respect to their virulence reaches its maximum level at the phases of reservation and epidemic spread and its minimum level at the phases of epidemic and reservational transformation. The size of streptococcal foci in carriers and the virulence of streptococci isolated from them are the inter-related unidirectional signs of the population of the infective agent and, at the same time, the main factors responsible for the phase character of the epidemic process and the morbidity level in tonsillitis.  相似文献

Plague, a zoonosis caused by Yersinia pestis, is still found in Africa, Asia, and the Americas. Madagascar reports almost one third of the cases worldwide. Y. pestis can be encountered in three very different types of foci: urban, rural, and sylvatic. Flea vector and wild rodent host population dynamics are tightly correlated with modulation of climatic conditions, an association that could be crucial for both the maintenance of foci and human plague epidemics. The black rat Rattus rattus, the main host of Y. pestis in Madagascar, is found to exhibit high resistance to plague in endemic areas, opposing the concept of high mortality rates among rats exposed to the infection. Also, endemic fleas could play an essential role in maintenance of the foci. This review discusses recent advances in the understanding of the role of these factors as well as human behavior in the persistence of plague in Madagascar.  相似文献

The comparative evaluation of the epidemiological danger of alcohol-addicted persons with pulmonary tuberculosis who evaded treatment (the test group of 133 persons) and that of tuberculosis patients receiving adequate treatment under hospital conditions (the control group of 162 patients) was made. The morbidity level among relations having contacts with the patients evading treatment exceeded the morbidity level in the families of tuberculosis patients undergoing adequate treatment 4.5-fold for adults and 3.4-fold for children and adolescents, the contamination level in the latter group being twice as high. Although no cases of the disease were registered in the foci of infection where sick persons evading treatment had low bacterial discharge, still the elevated level of infection among children and adolescents in these foci as compared with the foci where tuberculosis patients did not evade treatment (35.0% and 21.7% respectively) indicated that the foci of infection where such aggravating factors as alcohol addiction in the source of infection was present were rightly considered to be epidemiologically most dangerous. Persons suffering with both tuberculosis and alcoholism should be subjected to compulsory hospitalization as early as possible.  相似文献

The summarized results of original studies, carried out in 1988-2003 by scientists of the Gamaleya Research Institute of Epidemiology and Microbiology, are discussed. The part dealing with the regularity and mechanisms of the circulation of pathogenic bacteria in the biocenosis of soil and water reservoirs includes the following subjects: population and intracellular interactions with protozoa; the evaluation of different representatives of hydrobios as hosts and the transmission along trophic biocenotic chains; the effect of algae and their metabolic products on bacterial populations; the possibility of the colonization of higher plants from the soil and the subsequent infection of rodents; the variability and clonal structure of bacterial population in its interaction with protozoa and plants; the chain of Yersinia circulation in agrocenosis. The part dealing with the mechanisms of the prolonged reservation of causative agents includes such subjects as the reversible transition of bacteria into the latent (uncultivable) state in soils and water reservoirs, as well as the biological inductors of this process; the prolonged preservation of latent bacteria in the cysts of protozoa and blue-green algae; the indication of causative agents in the natural foci of plague and pseudotuberculosis. On the basis of the original investigations and the data of literature new theoretical review in the field of the natural foci and the epidemiology of sapronotic infections have been formulated.  相似文献

Comparative analysis of vector activity of fleas in the Siberian natural plague foci was carried out during two long-term periods of experimental studies: 1967–1980 and 1983–2007. The data on block formation frequency in adult fleas infected with Yersinia pestis were analyzed for 127 experiments with 15 flea species and subspecies. The vector activity of fleas in all the Siberian plague foci (Altai, Tuva, and Transbaikalia) has increased over a rather short time period of 30–40 years. The frequencies of flea blocking were significantly different (P < 0.001) between the analyzed periods in all the three plague foci.
