Both habitat heterogeneity and disturbance can profoundly influence ecological systems at many levels of biological and ecological
organization. However, the joint influences of heterogeneity and disturbance on temporal variability in communities have received
little attention despite the intense homogenizing influence of human activity. I performed a field manipulation of substrate
heterogeneity in a small New England stream, and measured changes in benthic macroinvertebrate communities for 100 days—a
period that included both a severe drought and a flood. Generally, community variability decreased with increasing substrate
heterogeneity. However, within sampling intervals, this relationship tended to fluctuate through time, apparently tracking
changes in hydrology. At the beginning of the experiment, community temporal variability clearly decreased along a gradient
of increasing substrate heterogeneity—a result consistent with an observational study performed the previous year. During
the subsequent weeks, droughts and flooding created exceptionally high variability in both hydrology and benthic macroinvertebrate
community structure resulting in the disappearance of this relationship. However, during the last weeks of the experiment
when hydrologic conditions were relatively more stable, the negatively sloped relationship between community temporal variability
and habitat heterogeneity reemerged and mimicked relationships observed both early in the experiment and in the previous year’s
study. High habitat heterogeneity may promote temporal stability through several mechanisms including stabilization of resources
and increased refugia from minor disturbances or predation. However, the results of this experiment suggest that severe disturbance
events can create large-scale environmental variability that effectively swamps the influence of habitat heterogeneity, illustrating
that a thorough understanding of community temporal variability in natural systems will necessarily consider sources of environmental
variability at multiple spatial and temporal scales.

1. The effects of riffles as barriers to movement of stream fish was investigated in a set of eight large outdoor artificial streams. Pools were 183 cm in diameter and 45 cm deep; riffles were 183 cm long and 43 cm wide. Rates of movement of three species of minnows (Cyprinidae) (Campostoma anomalum, Cyprinella venusta and Notropis boops) among pools were measured at four riffle current velocities (0, 15, 30 and 45 cm s–1), three thalweg depths (10, 50 and 100 mm), two riffle lengths (183 and 549 cm), and with and without the threat of predation. Visual observation and video cameras were used to quantify movement rate. 2. Mean movement rate (percentage of fish crossing a riffle each 30 min) was 18.1% at 0 cm s–1 and only 1.8 at 45 cm s–1. Movement rate was 7.2% with no predators present and 20.2% with caged predators in pools. Notropis boops had a lower rate of movement than C. venusta or C. anomalum across all trials. The mean group size (number of individuals crossing a riffle together) was 1.2 fish overall, indicating most movement was by individuals and not groups. Group size was significantly greater only with shallow riffles or under the threat of predation. 3. Overall biotic and abiotic factors in these artificial streams do influence movement rates and may affect movement among pools in natural streams. 相似文献

Spatial and temporal heterogeneity of the bacterial communities in stream epilithic biofilms 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The spatial and temporal variability in bacterial communities within freshwater systems is poorly understood. The bacterial composition of stream epilithic biofilms across a range of different spatial and temporal scales both within and between streams and across the profile of individual stream rocks was characterised using a community DNA-fingerprinting technique (Automated Ribosomal Intergenic Spacer Analysis, ARISA). The differences in bacterial community structure between two different streams were found to be greater than the spatial variability within each stream site, and were larger than the weekly temporal variation measured over a 10-week study period. Greater variations in bacterial community profiles were detected on different faces of individual stream rocks than between whole rocks sampled within a 9-m stream section. Stream temperature was found to be the most important determinant of bacterial community variability using distance-based redundancy analysis (dbRDA) of ARISA data, which may have broad implications for riparian zone management and ecological change as a consequence of global warming. The combination of ARISA with multivariate statistical methods and ordination, such as multidimensional scaling (MDS), permutational manova and RDA, provided rapid and effective methods for quantifying and visualising variation in bacterial community structure, and to identify potential drivers of ecological change. 相似文献

1. The ontogenetic development of anadromous salmonids includes downstream emigration of immature individuals from freshwater towards the marine environment. Although this migration of juvenile salmonids (smolts) may be associated with severe mortalities, only limited attention has been paid to the spatial positioning of smolts in small streams. 2. Using a novel approach, this study examined the vertical and horizontal positioning of brown trout and Atlantic salmon smolts while performing downstream migration in a small lowland stream. 3. Pre‐smolts of indigenous and hatchery‐reared (F1) brown trout (Salmo trutta), and two different populations of Atlantic salmon (S. salar), were tagged with passive integrated transponder (PIT) tags and subsequently released upstream of an antenna array consisting of five circular swim‐through PIT antennas. Antennas were positioned in order to determine whether the migrating smolts were bottom or surface oriented, and if they were oriented towards the mid‐channel or the stream bank. 4. During the smolt emigration period, data describing both the detection of the migrating fish and the amount of water passing through the antennas were collected. This was accomplished in order to determine if the fish were performing active positioning behaviour independently of the vertical and horizontal discharge distributions in the stream. 5. The results showed that the smolts migrated in a non‐random spatial pattern independently of the stream discharge distributions. Vertically, the indigenous brown trout and the Atlantic salmon demonstrated a preference for the bottom orientated positions. In contrast, the distribution of the F1 brown trout was not different from the discharge distribution. The latter observation suggests random vertical positioning, which may be indicative of inferior migratory performance. Horizontally, all tested smolt populations strongly preferred the mid‐channel positions. 6. The discharge‐corrected preferences for certain spatial positions suggest that smolt emigration is not entirely a matter of passive displacement in lowland streams. 7. Anthropogenically altered channels may inhibit or delay downstream emigration of smolts resulting in increased mortalities. Given that the smolts in this study actively selected spatial positions in the mid‐channel and near the bottom, it is suggested that deep, mid‐channel furrows may be used to help guide migrating smolts past adverse habitats in lowland streams. 相似文献

Environmental heterogeneity can affect the behavior of organisms, but the consequences of patchiness for organismal energetics (e.g., growth, fitness) are not well understood. This study demonstrates that spatial heterogeneity can affect the growth of aquatic stream insects in laboratory streams, and reveals the behavioral mechanisms for these effects. In a 2×2 factorial design, I experimentally manipulated resource distribution (homogeneous vs. patchy, with the same overall resource levels) and current velocity (fast vs. slow) to investigate the direct and interactive effects of these factors on the drift behavior and growth of two mobile stream grazers, the mayflies Baetis bicaudatis and Epeorus deceptivus. B. bicaudatis nymphs grew larger in environments with homogeneously distributed resources than in patchy environments, and both species grew larger in fast than slow current environments. Patterns of drift behavior over the course of the study corresponded to observed differences in growth. Both species grew to larger body size in treatments where they drifted more successfully among substrates (fast-current treatments) and where they entered the drift less frequently (fast current for both species, and homogeneous treatments for B. bicaudatis). Overall, these results demonstrate that patchiness can significantly influence both the behavior of aquatic insects and the size to which these insects grow. In the light of previously published relationships between nymphal mayfly body mass and fecundity, these results suggest that patchiness in streams may have important consequences for mayfly populations. 相似文献

In the Argentine Pampa fertile soils were originally covered by grasslands, but at present are intensively cultivated. We assessed the specific composition of the fish assemblage of El Pescado stream and compared it with that recorded in 1991–1993, when land use in the watershed consisted in natural pastures. The persistence of the fish assemblage between the two studies was rather high: 0.76. Abundance, biomass and species richness were higher during drought periods. Connectivity with the huge Río de la Plata hydrographic system seems the most important contribution to the high and stable species richness of El Pescado stream. 相似文献

1. Floods are major disturbances to stream ecosystems that can kill or displace organisms and modify habitats. Many studies have reported changes in fish assemblages after a single flood, but few studies have evaluated the importance of timing and intensity of floods on long‐term fish assemblage dynamics. 2. We used a 10‐year dataset to evaluate the effects of floods on fishes in Kings Creek, an intermittent prairie stream in north‐eastern, Kansas, U.S.A. Samples were collected seasonally at two perennial headwater sites (1995–2005) and one perennial downstream flowing site (1997–2005) allowing us to evaluate the effects of floods at different locations within a watershed. In addition, four surveys during 2003 and 2004 sampled 3–5 km of stream between the long‐term study sites to evaluate the use of intermittent reaches of this stream. 3. Because of higher discharge and bed scouring at the downstream site, we predicted that the fish assemblage would have lowered species richness and abundance following floods. In contrast, we expected increased species richness and abundance at headwater sites because floods increase stream connectivity and create the potential for colonisation from downstream reaches. 4. Akaike Information Criteria (AIC) was used to select among candidate regression models that predicted species richness and abundance based on Julian date, time since floods, season and physical habitat at each site. At the downstream site, AIC weightings suggested Julian date was the best predictor of fish assemblage structure, but no model explained >16% of the variation in species richness or community structure. Variation explained by Julian date was primarily attributed to a long‐term pattern of declining abundance of common species. At the headwater sites, there was not a single candidate model selected to predict total species abundance and assemblage structure. AIC weightings suggested variation in assemblage structure was associated with either Julian date or local habitat characteristics. 5. Fishes rapidly colonised isolated or dry habitats following floods. This was evidenced by the occurrence of fishes in intermittent reaches and the positive association between maximum daily discharge and colonisation events at both headwater sites. 6. Our study suggests floods allow dispersal into intermittent habitats with little or no downstream displacement of fishes. Movement of fishes among habitats during flooding highlights the importance of maintaining connectivity of stream networks of low to medium order prairie streams. 相似文献

Freshwater shrimp dominate the faunal biomass of many headwater tropical streams: however, their role in community organization is unclear. Enclosure/exclosure experiments in a montane Puerto Rican stream examined direct and indirect effects of two dominant taxa of atyid (Atyidae) shrimp, Atya lanipes Holthuis and Xiphocaris elongata Guerin-Meneville. Both shrimp taxa caused significant reductions in sediment cover on rock substrata, reducing sedimentation and enhancing algal biovolume on clay tiles in cages. When tiles incubated in shrimp exclosures for 2 wks were placed outside of cages, atyid shrimp removed 100% of the sediment cover within a 30 min observation period. Atyid shrimp appear to play an important role in stream recovery after high discharge events by rapidly removing sediments and detritus deposited on benthic substrata in pools. We evaluated the mechanism by which A. lanipes influences algae and benthic insects by comparing patterns of algal biomass, taxonomic composition, and insect abundance between shrimp-exclusion and shrimp-presence treatments both with and without manual sediment removal. The shrimp exclusion treatment without manual sediment removal bad significantly lower algal biomass and greater sedimentation than all other treatments. The treatment in which shrimp were excluded but sediment was manually removed, however, accrued almost the same algal biovolume as the shrimp enclosure treatment, supporting the hypothesis that sediment removal enhances the biovolume of understory algal taxa. Algal community composition was similar between stream bottom bedrock exposed to natural densities of shrimp and all experimental treatments for both Atya and Xiphocaris: a diatom community strongly dominated (78–95%) by the adnate taxon, Achnanthes lanceolata Breb ex. Kutz. Atyid shrimp are important in determining the distribution and abundance of benthic insects through both direct and indirect effects. Sessile, retreat-building chironomid larvae (Chironomidae: Diptera) are negatively affected by both A. lanipes and X. elongata, through direct removal by foraging activities and/or indirectly through depression of sediment resources available to larvae for the construction of retreats. In constrast, the mobile grazer, Cloeodes maculipes (Baetidae: Ephemeroptera) was not adversely affected and atyid shrimp have the potential to exert positive indirect effects on this taxon by facilitating its exploitation of algal resources and/or through enhancement of understory algal food resources through sediment removal. 相似文献

Zooplankton samples were collected monthly at three stations in Ogochi Reservoir during 1980, and the temporal and horizontal
variations in the density of dominant taxa were evaluated by a standard 2-way ANOVA with random effects. The analysis revealed
that horizontal is greater than temporal variation in the warm water season (> 18 °C), whereas temporal variation is greater
in the cold water season (< 18 °C). Horizontal heterogeneity of the zooplankton community found in the warm water season seems
to be associated with differences in site-specific conditions. 相似文献

The Socorro isopod, Thermosphaeroma thermophilum, became the focus of a novel conservation strategy when apparent extirpation of the species from the wild prompted construction of the Socorro Isopod Propagation Facility (SIPF) near the native spring in Socorro, New Mexico, USA. We subjected captive populations to 4 habitat treatments over 2 consecutive 50-month experimental trials. Native populations of T. thermophilum remained significantly more abundant than captive subpopulations during the 100-month study. Population trends among artificial habitats differed slightly between the trials, but the magnitude of this difference was independent of linear flow within either pool series, suggesting that captive isopods responded to habitat quality. Isopod age structure was most heterogeneous in pools with plants suggesting that vertical structural diversity is necessary to maintain long-term viability of T. thermophilum in captivity. Observations of `breeding huddles' in the SIPF pools implied that controlled propagation may affect the social basis of the species' mating system. This could be a behavioral response to selection on body size that may reduce predation risks from larger male cannibals, or to increase fitness of both sexes under spatially altered sex ratios of artificial environments. Our results accentuate the need for continued research on species-specific management practices for geographically restricted invertebrate taxa such as the endangered Socorro isopod. 相似文献

The food resource use of a stream in NW Spain by fish (Salmo trutta L. and Anguilla anguilla L.), birds (Cinclus cinclus L. and Motacilla cinerea L.) and mammals (Galemys pyrenaicus G. and Neomys anomalus C.) was studied. Data on seasonal diets and stream benthos prey were used to determine prey selection patterns.Caddisfly larvae are the main resource for Cinclus and Galemys, but these predators also consumed other benthic prey. Salmo fed on a wide range of benthic invertebrates, emergent pupae and terrestrial prey, whereas Anguilla consumed primarily benthic invertebrates, especially Lumbricids. Neomys fed mainly on terrestrial prey (Gasteropods and Lumbricids), but also consumed aquatic prey. Motacilla captured aquatic insects both in larval and aerial stages, as well as terrestrial prey. Both prey availability and selection led to seasonal differences in the use of food resources. All species showed a marked prey selection of aquatic taxa. Prey size plays an important role in this selection, most species consuming the largest of available prey sizes. In spite of the fact that all species feed upon freshwater invertebrates, substantial resource partitioning was observed in all seasons. This partitioning may be attributable to morpholological and physiological differences. Nevertheless, Anguilla and Galemys, two quite different animals, did feed on the same prey much of the time. 相似文献

Effects of substratum stability on diversity of stream invertebrates during baseflow at two spatial scales 总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5
1. The effects of substratum stability on the diversity of stream invertebrates were assessed at two spatial scales in a Japanese stream during baseflow, from May to June 1998. Deposition and erosion were examined separately as distinct elements of substratum stability by a newly developed method using small steel pins. Stream invertebrates were sampled after 28 days of measurement of substratum stability. We also measured physical environmental variables, current velocity and depth, and food resource parameters including periphyton and particulate organic matter (POM) standing crops.
2. At the scale of the habitat patch, the effects of substratum stability on invertebrates were overwhelmed by those of POM standing crop. Moreover, higher taxon richness at high abundance may simply result from a higher likelihood of more taxa being included in samples. Therefore, this small scale revealed no role for substratum stability in explaining spatial pattern of community diversity.
3. At the reach scale ( n =10), taxon richness and evenness peaked at an intermediate level of deposition, whereas invertebrate abundance did not show any significant relationship. This result, and the pattern of relative abundance of common taxa, implies that the diversity of stream invertebrates was determined by subtle substratum movements and by the habitat preference of each taxon.
4. The difference in the determinant of community parameters between the habitat patch and the reach affirm the importance of a cross-scale analysis to choose an appropriate spatial scale for investigating the community structure of stream invertebrates. Prominent effects of substratum stability, particularly the deposition of substratum particles, during baseflow suggest that subtle and constant movement of small substratum particles can contribute to determine the diversity of stream invertebrates. 相似文献

Effects of riparian leaf dynamics on periphyton photosynthesis and light utilisation efficiency 总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
1. Streambed light regimes change dramatically when riparian trees gain leaves in spring and lose them in autumn. This study examined the effect of these changes on periphyton photosynthetic characteristics, primary production, and light utilisation efficiency in two eastern Tennessee streams. 2. Photosynthesis–irradiance responses were measured at intervals covering leaf emergence and abscission in spring and autumn. Photosynthetic efficiency (αchl) increased with declining streambed irradiances during spring leaf emergence, but returned to pre‐emergence values after autumn leaf fall. The onset of photosaturation (Ik) displayed the opposite pattern, decreasing during leaf emergence and increasing after leaf fall. Both αchl and Ik were closely associated (P < 0.01) with daily integrated streambed irradiance, as were periphyton carotenoids. Internal shading by photoprotective carotenoids is hypothesised to account for lower αchl when streambed irradiances are high. 3. An in situ shading experiment confirmed that the temporal changes observed in periphyton photosynthetic characteristics and carotenoids were primarily the result of changing light levels and not other environmental factors (e.g. nutrients, temperature). 4. Daily chlorophyll‐specific primary production (PPchl) was calculated with P–I models and recorded streambed irradiances. In both streams, PPchl was the highest in early spring when trees were leafless, and then declined markedly as leaves emerged, reaching a minimum in summer. PPchl increased after leaf abscission, but was still lower than it was in early spring, when the sun was higher and daylength was longer. A hyperbolic tangent equation fit to PPchl and daily integrated irradiance (r2=0. 85) suggested that primary production was light saturated at 4–8 mol m–2 d–1. 5. Light utilisation efficiency (Ψ) increased 10‐fold during leaf emergence. Photosaturation at high irradiances and photoacclimation at lower irradiances were responsible for a negative hyperbolic relationship between Ψ and daily integrated irradiance. 相似文献

Summary Many rocky shores are subject to periodic inundation by sand, which is often thought to reduce species richness by eliminating
organisms intolerant of sand scour or sand smothering. However, regular disturbance (e.g. inundation) should promote richness
by preventing the development of low diversity climax communities. A study of faunal richness on 10 regularly inundated shores
showed that inundation does promote richness, but by increasing habitat heterogeneity. Some species are excluded from parts
of the shore by sand, but because of the patchiness of sand deposits they are rarely excluded from the entire shore. Other
species are found only on rocks associated with sand, while typically sandy shore animals occur in the sand deposits themselves.
Total richness (281 species) was greater than for local noninundated shores and sandy beaches combined. 相似文献

In this study we investigated the relationship between the distributionpatterns of a number of herbaceous plant species and the isolation and age ofhabitat patches. The study was conducted for a network of ditch banks in anagricultural landscape in The Netherlands. Thirteen plant species were selectedrepresenting contrasting dispersal and seed bank characteristics. Isolation ofhabitat patches was determined by the distance to the nearest occupied patchandby the number of occupied patches in circles of increasing radius around thepatches. Age was the number of years since the creation of the ditches. In amultiple logistic regression model the separate effects of age of the habitatand the spatial variables were analyzed. A number of habitat variables wereusedto correct the effect of habitat quality. We concluded that distributionpatterns of plant species were mainly determined by habitat quality and thepresence of seed sources at short distances (< 25 m). Thisconclusion was independent of the dispersal characteristics of the species.Mostspecies had higher occupation frequencies in older than younger ditch banks.Only species with persistent seeds had comparable occupation probabilities inolder and younger habitat patches, indicating the importance of the soil seedbank as a source of colonization after large-scale disturbances. The effect ofage and management on the occupation probabilities of the species was oftendiminished in the regression model, probably due to correlation between somehabitat variables and the age of the patches. 相似文献

封育对科尔沁沙地小叶锦鸡儿群落植被特征及空间异质性的影响 总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5

In the sampling plots of grazing and different years enclosure, the species composition of C. mirophylla community all dominated by annual herbaceous plants. The species richness in grazed plot and in the plots enclosed for 6 and 12 years was 22, 19, and 20, respectively, with no significant difference. In the plots enclosed for 6 and 12 years, the plant density was (124.46±5.22) plants·m~(-2) and (203. 05±10. 38) plants·m~(-2), respec- tively, being significantly higher than that in grazed plot, which suggested that enclosure was an effective method to accelerate the vegetation restoration in Sandy Land. The Shannon-Wiener index, Simpson species diversity, and Pielou evenness in enclosed plots were lower than those in grazed plot, and decreased with increasing enclosure duration. The small-scale spatial heteroge-neity of vegetation in enclosed plots was smaller than that in grazed plot. The longer the enclosure duration, the smaller the spatial heterogeneity was. 相似文献

Effects of longitudinal variations in stream habitat structure on fish abundance: an analysis based on subunit-scale habitat classification 总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4
SUMMARY 1. Stream reaches contain assortments of various habitat types that can be defined at different spatial scales, such as channel unit (e.g. pools, riffles) and subunit (patches within channel units). We described longitudinal (upstream–downstream) patterns of stream habitat structure by considering subunits as structural elements, and examined their effects on the abundance of masu salmon ( Oncorhynchus masou ) and rosyface dace ( Leuciscus ezoe ) in a third-order tributary of the Teshio River in northern Hokkaido, Japan.
2. Nine subunit types were determined on the basis of water depth, current velocity and substrate, using 0.5 × 0.5 m grids. Although both masu salmon and rosyface dace used pools as a major habitat, the former preferred a subunit type occurring at pool heads (PH subunit) while the latter preferred a slow-current edge type (SE-2 subunit).
3. Along the course of the stream, slow-edge subunits (SE-1, 2 and 3) increased in frequency downstream while fast-edge subunits (FE-1 and 2) decreased, suggesting a downstream development of slow-current edges. Regression analyses indicated that longitudinal variation in masu salmon abundance was explained by the area of PH, rather than pools. Masu salmon density increased with the area of PH. Rosyface dace abundance was explained by a combination of water depth and the area of SE-2, both effects being positive.
4. Longitudinal variations in the abundance of both species were related to the abundance of their preferred habitat at the subunit scale, rather than channel-unit scale. The results emphasise the importance of fine-scale patchiness when examining stream fish habitats. 相似文献

The addition of nocturnal, Hoplias malabaricus, and diurnal, Crenicichla alta, predatory fishes downstream of barrier waterfalls increases predation threat for a killifish, Rivulus hartii, in Trinidadian streams. We hypothesized that the diel patterning of predation risk would affect prey movement rates, and tested this hypothesis by comparing movement in river sites/zones containing both the nocturnal and diurnal predator with movement in river sites/zones containing only the nocturnal taxon. We evaluated this prediction in the framework of an intermediate threat hypothesis (ITH) that holds that movement will be highest at some intermediate level of threat. We marked prey fish in study sites in two watersheds of a river, each with waterfalls that divided the river into three zones: a predator absent zone (P0), a zone with one nocturnal predator (P1), and a zone with one nocturnal and one diurnal predator (P2), and tested the ITH prediction that movement will be ordered as P0<P1>P2. The single predator promoted longitudinal movement by Rivulus (P0<P1), while zones with the two predators retarded movement for small Rivulus (P1>P2) as predicted by the ITH. However, movement by larger, less vulnerable Rivulus remained elevated (P1=P2 or P2>P1). A displacement experiment in each zone found that threat tended to reduce the probability of a displaced fish reaching home, but the two predator zones did not differ from one another in their effect on this probability. Hence, the prediction that predator activity over the full 24 h diel cycle would retard movement, P2<P1, was not supported with respect to homing. Because habitat and predator communities change predictably from headwater streams to larger rivers in many lotic ecosystems, we present a conceptual model for predicting fish movement behavior along this continuum. The model posits an important role for predation threat, and the size and spacing of refuge patches, suggesting that human alterations of these factors will affect the natural movement of fish in streams. 相似文献
