In temperate climates, tree growth dormancy usually ensures the annual nature of tree rings, but in tropical environments, determination of annual periodicity can be more complex. The purposes of the work are as follows: (1) to generate a reliable tree‐ring width chronology for Prioria copaifera Griseb. (Leguminoceae), a tropical tree species dwelling in the Atrato River floodplains, Colombia; (2) to assess the climate signal recorded by the tree‐ring records; and (3) to validate the annual periodicity of the tree rings using independent methods. We used standard dendrochronological procedures to generate the P. copaifera tree‐ring chronology. We used Pearson correlations to evaluate the relationship of the chronology with the meteorological records, climate regional indices, and gridded precipitation/sea surface temperature products. We also evaluated 24 high‐precision 14C measurements spread over a range of preselected tree rings, with assigned calendar years by dendrochronological techniques, before and after the bomb spike in order to validate the annual nature of the tree rings. The tree‐ring width chronology was statistically reliable, and it correlated significantly with local records of annual and October–December (OND) streamflow and precipitation across the upper river watershed (positive), and OND temperature (negative). It was also significantly related to the Oceanic Niño Index, Pacific Decadal Oscillation, and the Southern Oscillation Index, as well as sea surface temperatures over the Caribbean and the Pacific region. However, 14C high‐precision measurements over the tree rings demonstrated offsets of up to 40 years that indicate that P. copaifera can produce more than one ring in certain years. Results derived from the strongest climate–growth relationship during the most recent years of the record suggest that the climatic signal reported may be due to the presence of annual rings in some of those trees in recent years. Our study alerts about the risk of applying dendrochronology in species with challenging anatomical features defining tree rings, commonly found in the tropics, without an independent validation of annual periodicity of tree rings. High‐precision 14C measurements in multiple trees are a useful method to validate the identification of annual tree rings.

Given the scarcity of instrumental climatic data in the South American tropics, it is valuable to explore the dendrochronological potential of the numerous tree species growing in the region. In this paper, we assessed for the first time the dendrochronological characteristics of Schinopsis brasiliensis, an arboreal species from the dry-tropical Cerrado and Chaco forests in Bolivia and adjacent countries. Similar to most woody species in the Cerrado and Chaco regions, growth rings of S. brasiliensis are delimited by the presence of thin but continuous lines of marginal parenchyma. Based on 22 samples from 15 trees, we present the first ring-width chronology for this species covering the period 1812–2011 (200 years). Additionally, a 106-year floating chronology from S. brasiliensis was developed using cores from four columns from the church of San Miguel, Santa Cruz, built in the period 1720–1740. Standard dendrochronological statistics indicate an important common signal in the radial growth of S. brasiliensis. The comparison of variations in regional climate and ring widths shows that tree growth is directly related to spring-summer rainfall and inversely related to temperature. Following the winter dry season, rainfall in late spring and early summer increases soil water supply, which activates tree growth. In contrast, above-average temperatures during the same period increase evapotranspiration, intensify the water deficit and reduce radial growth. The dependence of S. brasiliensis growth on water supply is evidence of its dendrochronological potential for reconstructing past precipitation variations in the extensive tropical Cerrado and Chaco forest formations in South America. Using wood from historical buildings opens the possibility of extending the chronologies of S. brasiliensis over the past 400–500 years.

The aim of this study was to compare the climatic responses of three tree rings proxies: tree ring width (TRW), maximum latewood density (MXD), and blue intensity (BI). For this study, 20 cores of Pinus sylvestris covering the period 1886–2015 were extracted from living non-damaged trees from the Eastern Carpathian Mountains (Romania). Each chronology was compared to monthly and daily climate data. All tree ring proxies had a stronger correlation with the daily climate data compared to monthly data. The highest correlation coefficient was obtained between the MXD chronology and daily maximum temperature over the period beginning with the end of July and ending in the middle of September (r = 0.64). The optimal intervals for the temperature signature were 01 Aug – 24 Sept for the MXD chronology, 05 Aug – 25 Aug for the BI chronology, and both 16 Nov of the previous year – 16 March of the current year and 15 Apr – 05 May for the TRW chronology. The results from our study indicate that MXD can be used as a proxy indicator for summer maximum temperature, while TRW can be used as a proxy indicator for just March maximum temperature. The weak and unstable relationship between BI and maximum temperature indicates that BI is not a good proxy indicator for climate reconstructions over the analysed region.

The mountain forest steppe and taiga in northern Mongolia have experienced a forest decline in area and quality since the end of the last century. Changes in land use, climate, fire frequency and pest occurrence are considered to be the main drivers of this vegetation shift and desertification. Because this region is the source for major rivers, is home to a unique flora and fauna and represents an important source of timber for Mongolia, the ability of different tree species to respond to these changes and regenerate is of increasing interest. Our contribution focuses on the climate-growth relationship of old and young birch trees from two valleys in the Mongolian province of Selenge Aimag. The research site Bugant, located in the Western Khentey Mountains, was the most important logging centre in Mongolia during socialist times. Today, the vegetation is dominated by succession forests of light taiga. The research site Altansumber, on the border of the Sant and Khushat soum, is dominated by light taiga and mountain forest steppe. Traditional nomads who depend on these forests for different reasons inhabit this area.Wood cores were sampled and chronologies of young and old birch trees at Bugant and Altansumber were created. Climate data were obtained from the Eroo station, which is known in the region for its long and reliable climate record. We analysed the climate-growth relationships of the chronologies from 1962 to 2009. At both sites and in both age classes, correlations with temperature were predominantly negative, particularly in April (Bugant, south- and east-facing slopes) and May (Altansumber, north-facing slopes). Precipitation of the late summer of the previous year (August/September) positively correlated with the growth of birch at Altansumber. We assume that the significant negative correlation between winter precipitation (December/January) and the growth of old birches at both sites is due to positive effects of snow cover on the survival rate of herbivorous insect populations. Our results indicate that during the early vegetation period, younger birch trees are more dependent on water availability than older ones. Negative pointer years were characterized by below-average precipitation during the current summer period and above-average spring temperatures. For the old trees, positive pointer years were characterized by above-average summer precipitation. We conclude that water availability is the most crucial factor for the growth of white birch in northern Mongolia.

The Azores Archipelago, located in the North Atlantic Ridge, experiences heavy rainfall and mild temperatures with weak seasonal differences due to oceanic influence. To our knowledge, there have been no dendrochronological studies in the Azores. The aim of this study is to explore the dendrochronological potential of Pinus pinaster Ait. growing in this archipelago and to determine what limiting factor is regulating tree growth. To do so, we have sampled adult maritime pine trees growing in a plantation, in the Pico island of the Azores.Tree ring boundaries were not always easily distinguished, suggesting that in some years cambial activity did not stop during winter. Despite this, it was possible to successfully crossdate the tree-ring series and to establish a tree-ring width chronology with a strong common signal. Climatic correlations revealed a positive response to spring precipitation but no temperature signal in the tree-ring width chronology. Tree-ring width was also negatively correlated with the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) and the sea level pressure (SLP) in May − June.Intra-annual density fluctuations (IADFs), which are anatomical features formed in response to variations in environmental conditions during the growing season, were present in 85% of the tree rings. IADFs were identified based on its position within the ring: type E+, characterized as a transition wood from early- to latewood; type L, the most frequent, characterized as earlywood-like cells within latewood; and type L+, characterized as earlywood-like cells between latewood and earlywood of the next tree ring. Each IADF type presented a unique climatic signal: type E+ was positively correlated with early summer precipitation and early spring temperature; type L was positively correlated with early autumn precipitation and temperature; and type L+ was positively correlated with late autumn precipitation. In conclusion, the tree-ring width chronology established for maritime pine growing in the Pico Island of Azores contains a clear climatic signal for spring precipitation, whereas IADFs frequency correlated better with precipitation later in the growing season. For this reason, we suggest that IADFs should be included in future dendrochronological studies in the Macaronesia Biogeographical region since they can improve the climatic signal present in tree-ring width chronologies.

Tree-ring inter-annual pattern variation is crucial in dendrochronology, allowing the identification of possible limiting factors on growth. Thus, trees exposed to subtropical or tropical climates without a marked seasonality may show a low degree of interannual variation, impeding a straightforward dendroclimatological approach. Meanwhile, subtropical regions, and areas in transitional climates such as the Azores archipelago, are widely unexplored in terms of dendroclimatology, providing opportunities to work with endemic trees, including the dominant Azorean tree Juniperus brevifolia (Seub.) Antoine. To evaluate the dendrochronological potential of J. brevifolia, we analyzed tree-ring patterns, crossdating capabilities, and correlation with climate parameters. We sampled 48 individual trees from two natural populations (São Miguel and Terceira islands) using an increment borer. Besides, a Trephor tool was used to obtain wood microcores for micro-anatomical analysis. Although the transition between early and latewood was evident, partially indistinct ring boundaries and wedging rings were present in some cases, affecting the crossdating process, but not impeding the establishment of reliable ring-width chronologies. Following detrending, master chronologies were built and correlated with monthly temperature and precipitation data using the treeclim R package. The climate-growth relationships indicated negative correlations with late summer temperature in both populations. Considering our results and the importance of J. brevifolia as a dominant tree in the Azores natural forests, we conclude that it shows an acceptable potential for dendrochronological research. Thus, this study provides baseline information to help fill the knowledge gap regarding the climate-growth relationship of Azorean trees.

We examine the climate significance in tree-ring chronologies retrieved from Sabina tibetica Kom. (Tibetan juniper) at two sites ranging in elevation from 4124 to 4693 m above sea level (a.s.l.) in the Namling region, south Tibet. The study region is under the control of semi-arid plateau temperate climate. The samples were grouped into high- and low-elevation classes and standard ring-width chronologies for both classes were developed. Statistical analysis revealed a decreasing growth rate yet increasing chronology reliability with increasing elevation. Overall, correlation analyses showed that radial growth in S. tibetica at the study sites was controlled by similar climatic factors, regardless of elevation; these factors comprised early winter (November) and early summer (May–June) temperatures as well as annual precipitation (July–June). Slight differences in the correlation between tree growth along the elevation gradient and climate variables were examined. The correlations with early winter temperature varied from significantly positive at the low-elevation site to weakly positive at the high-elevation site, whereas the correlations between radial growth and early summer temperature increased from weakly negative at the low-elevation sites to strongly negative at the high-elevation sites. The abundant precipitation through the year may have masked variations in tree growth on different elevation aspects. Our results will aid future dendroclimatological studies of Namling tree rings in south Tibet and demonstrate the potential of S. tibetica Kom. for improving our understanding of environmental impacts on tree growth.

Euphrates poplar (Populus euphratica) is a key species of Tugai forests in the central Asian deserts and has been the topic of dendrochronological studies in west China since the 1980s. However, little is known about its growth performance at its highest occurrence in the southern Qaidam Basin of the northern Tibetan Plateau. Increment cores of the Euphrates poplar population there did well cross-date and thus showed a high dendrochronological potential. Its growth was persistently positively correlated with temperature from previous September to current August although not significant throughout. The annual precipitation of around 41 mm can not exert any significant effect on Euphrates poplar growth in view of the extremely high annual pan evaporation of 2,150 mm. Water in the nearby Tuolahai River is limited to the period from June–September. The positive correlation of tree growth with spring/early summer temperature indicates that the riparian Euphrates poplar trees may benefit from an increasing river runoff due to an advanced and accelerated snow and glacier melting under warmer conditions. An above-average autumn/early winter temperature in the preceding year may lead to an extended water flow in the river bed and hence to an increased tree growth in the next year. It is crucial to protect this invaluable natural forest from undue human activity.

Background and Aims

Shrubs and dwarf shrubs are wider spread on the Tibetan Plateau than trees and hence offer a unique opportunity to expand the present dendrochronological network into extreme environments beyond the survival limit of trees. Alpine shrublands on the Tibetan Plateau are characterized by rhododendron species. The dendrochronological potential of one alpine rhododendron species and its growth response to the extreme environment on the south-east Tibetan Plateau were investigated.

Methods

Twenty stem discs of the alpine snowy rhododendron (Rhododendron nivale) were collected close to the tongue of the Zuoqiupu Glacier in south-east Tibet, China. The skeleton plot technique was used for inter-comparison between samples to detect the growth pattern of each stem section. The ring-width chronology was developed by fitting a negative exponential function or a straight line of any slope. Bootstrapping correlations were calculated between the standard chronology and monthly climate data.

Key Results

The wood of snowy rhododendron is diffuse-porous with evenly distributed small-diameter vessels. It has well-defined growth rings. Most stem sections can be visually and statistically cross-dated. The resulting 75-year-long standard ring-width chronology is highly correlated with a timberline fir chronology about 200 km apart, providing a high degree of confidence in the cross-dating. The climate/growth association of alpine snowy rhododendron and of this timberline fir is similar, reflecting an impact of monthly mean minimum temperatures in November of the previous year and in July during the year of ring formation.

Conclusions

The alpine snowy rhododendron offers new research directions to investigate the environmental history of the Tibetan Plateau in those regions where up to now there was no chance of applying dendrochronology.Key words: South-east Tibetan Plateau, Rhododendron nivale, alpine shrub, growth ring, cross-dating, dendroclimatological potential, climate/growth association  相似文献

An investigation was made of the effects of tracheid dimensions on variations in the maximum density of Picea glehnii Mast., which were associated with climatic changes. Radial cell diameter and the thickness of the tangential cell walls of the last-formed cells in 90 annual rings of nine trees with different annual ring widths were analyzed by image analysis. Correlations between maximum density and tracheid dimensions indicated that changes in maximum density were due mainly to changes in cell wall thickness of the last-formed cells in annual rings and were not due to changes in radial cell diameter. The effects of climatic factors on tracheid dimensions were examined by application of dendroclimatological techniques. A chronology of cell wall thickness that represented common signals among trees was established. Simple correlation and response function analyses of the chronology revealed that cell wall thickness was influenced positively by summer temperature and negatively by precipitation in August, and these responses were similar to those of maximum density. The study demonstrated that variations in maximum density were due to variations in the cell wall thickness of the last-formed cells, which varied depending on the weather in summer.

In spite of enormous diversity in tree species, dendrochronological records in the tropical Andes are very scarce. Therefore, it is necessary to increase the search for new tree species with high dendrochronological characteristics in the tropical Andes, including the humid Puna of Peru. We present the first tree-ring chronology from Polylepis rodolfo-vasquezii, a recently described tree species in the Central Andes of Peru between 4000 and 4400 m elevation. Fifty trees were sampled in the district of Comas, Peru. After establishing the anatomical characteristics that delimit the annual growth rings, we developed a ring-width chronology by applying conventional dendrochronological techniques. The chronology covers the period 1869–2015 (157 years) and is well replicated from 1920 to present (> 20 samples). The statistics used to evaluate the quality of the chronology indicate that the P. rodolfo-vasquezii has similar values of MS, RBAR and EPS to those shown by other Polylepis spp chronologies. To determine the main climatic factors controlling the growth of P. rodolfo-vasquezii, we compared our chronology with local and regional temperature and precipitation records. Growth season temperature (November to May) seems to be the main climatic factor modulating inter-annual variations in the growth of this species. The sensitivity to inter-annual temperature variations highlights the potential of P. rodolfo-vasquezii to provide climatically sensitive dendrochronological records in the Central Andes. To our knowledge, this is the first tree-ring record in South America displaying significant relationships with temperature over the tropical Atlantic Ocean.

Highland ecosystems of western Andes foothills are currently poorly represented by dendrochronological information. The dendroclimatological potential of the Acerillo plant (Adesmia pinifolia), a shrub species well represented at these latitudes, was investigated. We reported the first ring width chronology of A. pinifolia growing at the central semi-arid Andes foothills of Argentina. We collected living and dead wood samples of Acerillo resulting in a chronology covering the period 1609–2020 (412 years) with a well replication from 1655 to present (> 13 samples). Bootstrapping correlation analysis revealed a strong positive relationship between our chronology and monthly precipitation and with the Standardized Precipitation Evapotranspiration Index (SPEI-12 months). For the last 40 years however, strong negative correlations with temperature are evidenced. The dendrochronological record also showed a negative relationship with sea surface temperatures from the Tropical Pacific, suggesting teleconnections with the El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO) phenomenon. The strong hydroclimatic signal recorded in the A. pinifolia chronology represents a high opportunity to produce long-term proxy climate data for the Central Andes foothills, an extensive region devoid of trees but of hydrological relevance for the support of important economic activities.

Up to now, the development of dendrochronological records from tropical regions in South America has been limited to the lowlands with emphasis in the Amazon basin. In this contribution, we present the first chronology of Cedrela nebulosa, a species that develops in the tropical mountainous regions of South America. We collected samples from trees in Monobamba district in Peru, analysed the anatomical features that determine the growth rings, and processed following the methods commonly used in dendrochronology. The 133-years chronology covering the 1883–2015 period, showed large correlation between series. In order to determine the climatic variables that control tree growth, we performed correlation analyses between tree-growth and local and regional precipitation and temperature records. We found that precipitation triggers tree growth at the beginning of the spring season but temperature seems to be the main control in annual growth. Also, C. nebulosa chronology present coherent variations with Multivariate Enso Index (MEI) and Pacific Ocean sea surface temperatures during summer months. This climate-sensitive tree-ring record indicates good potential for dendroclimatic studies and provides an opportunity to reconstruct climatic variations in montane forests of the tropical Andes.

Rhododendron przewalskii is an important dwarf shrub species in alpine environments of western Sichuan that offers a unique opportunity to expand current dendrochronological networks into extreme environments beyond the survival limit of trees. Our objectives in this study are to evaluate the dendroclimatological potentials of R. przewalskii and determine the major limiting climate factor for the species’ growth rings. We sampled 25 cross-sections of R. przewalskii at an elevation of 4050 m, about 150 m above treeline, on Zhegu Mountain of Miyaluo in western Sichuan of southeastern Tibetan Plateau. R. przewalskii has well-defined growth rings such that most stem sections could be cross-dated. The resulting 61-year long standard chronology (A.D. 1949–2009) was derived from 38 series from 19 cross-sections. Response analysis revealed that radial growth of the Zhegu Mountain R. przewalskii is significantly and negatively correlated to late winter temperature (January–February), mainly driven by maximum temperatures. This correlation indicates that colder daytime temperatures during late-winter lead to improved growth the following growing season. Minimum winter temperatures do not appear important for radial growth of this population. R. przewalskii ring widths are also strongly correlated to late-winter maximum temperatures over the southeastern Tibetan Plateau region. April maximum and July minimum temperatures are positively and significantly correlated to radial growth suggesting that warm April days and warm July nights promote current-season radial growth. In contrast, radial growth is only negatively correlated to April precipitation, indicating that wet soil conditions inhibit total radial increment. The main differences of R. przewalskii compared to tree species living at high-altitude nearby regions is that R. przewalskii has a weaker positive growth response to summer temperature and winter minimum temperature, but a much stronger negative response to winter temperature. Due to the strong climatic signal recorded in the growth curves of R. przewalskii, this dwarf shrub should be useful for climate–growth studies in alpine regions where no forests are present.
