Aim of this work was to evaluate if long-term dietary supplementation of potassium iodide (KI) to dairy goats can influence metabolic and hormonal parameters. Thirty Sarda crossbred dairy goats were divided into three groups, which were orally administered 0 (control group; CON), 0.45 (low iodine group; LI) or 0.90 (high iodine group; HI) mg of KI/day, respectively. The daily dose of KI (76.5% of iodine) was administered as salt dissolved in water for 8 weeks. Plasma contents of nonesterified fatty acids (NEFA), urea, glucose, insulin, free triiodothyronine (FT3) and thyroxine (FT4) were determined weekly. Iodine supplementation increased significantly the FT3 hormone (P = 0.007) and FT3/FT4 ratio (P = 0.001) and tended to influence the FT4 hormone (P = 0.059). An iodine level × week of sampling interaction for NEFA (P = 0.013) evidenced a temporary concentration increase in supplemented groups. The ‘Revised Quantitative Insulin Sensitivity Check Index’ increased with KI supplementation (P ⩽ 0.01). Blood urea nitrogen (BUN) and insulin were lowered (P ⩽ 0.01) by iodine supplementation (groups LI and HI; P ⩽ 0.01). The glucose concentration evidenced an iodine level × week of sampling interaction (P = 0.025) due to an unexpected and temporary increase of its concentration in the CON group. Glucose concentration was decreased by KI supplementation only in LI group (P < 0.05). In conclusion, the daily supplementation of low doses of KI can improve insulin sensitivity and decrease BUN in dairy goats.  相似文献

The response of runners to arduous triathlon competition   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
As very few of the competitors in a triathlon are truly specialist in more than one of the three disciplines, high levels of physical (and mental) stress may result during the course of the event. We investigated some of the physiological responses occurring in runners participating in an "Iron Man" triathlon consisting of canoeing (20 km), cycling (90 km) and running (42 km), in that sequence. Twenty-one male entrants volunteered as subjects for the study. Prior to the competition, maximal oxygen consumption (VO2max) was determined. Basal venous blood samples were collected on the day prior to the competition and post-exercise venous blood samples were collected within 5 minutes of completion of the race. Serum iron was significantly reduced from a mean basal value of 20.6 mumol X l-1 to a mean value of 8.4 mumol X l-1 after the race. Cortisol levels showed a 3 fold increase after the race. Gross VO2max (l X min-1) and mass standardised VO2max (ml X min-1 X kg-1) were both negatively correlated to cortisol levels after the race (p less than 0.05). Total performance time was not related to gross VO2max (l X min-1) but was well correlated to mass corrected VO2max (ml X min-1 X kg-1). The marked fall in serum iron may have been related to heavy sweating or prelatent iron deficiency. Chronic iron deficiency (without frank anaemia) can impair physical performance, although we were unable to show any significant correlation between serum iron level after the race and time taken to complete the event.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

Short-course 'sprint' triathlons have become popular in recent years, often as a precursor to the longer full-course triathlons. We undertook a study investigating the haematological and biochemical changes that occur in novice triathletes between the start and finish and after each of the three legs of a short sprint triathlon involving swimming, cycling and running. The changes that occurred in the triathlon included a significant (P less than 0.003) decrease in weight from 71.7 kg, SD 7.9 to 70.3 kg, SD 7.6. Throughout the time span of the triathlon, the white blood cell count increased significantly (P less than 0.001), as did the platelet count (P less than 0.005) and plateletcrit (P less than 0.001). There were no significant changes during the period of the race in any of the other haematological variables measured. The biochemical variables measured were glucose, triglycerides, sodium, potassium, calcium, lactate dehydrogenase, creatinine and aspartate aminotransferase. Triglyceride, calcium and potassium values did not change between the pre- and post-race samplings. All other biochemical parameters showed a significant change (P less than 0.05 or better). Changes that occurred in the haematological and biochemical parameters between stages were many and varied. There was also a significant change in plasma volume during the swimming event (P less than 0.001), but this returned to normal during the later stages of the triathlon. In conclusion the changes that occurred during the triathlon were many and were similar to those reported elsewhere in the literature for longer events.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

Substrate competition can be found in many types of biological processes, ranging from gene expression to signal transduction and metabolic pathways. Although several experimental and in silico studies have shown the impact of substrate competition on these processes, it is still often neglected, especially in modelling approaches. Using toy models that exemplify different metabolic pathway scenarios, we show that substrate competition can influence the dynamics and the steady state concentrations of a metabolic pathway. We have additionally derived rate laws for substrate competition in reversible reactions and summarise existing rate laws for substrate competition in irreversible reactions.  相似文献

Estradiol dipropionate increased the amount of cGMP and to less extent that of cAMP in the uterine tissues of ovariectomized rats. The combined effect of estradiol and progesterone promoted rise only in the cAMP level. Surgical and pharmacological denervation of both sympathetic and parasympathetic nerve influences in uterus suppressed the effect of the above hormones. Thus, neuromediator processes play an essential role in realization of cAMP- and cGMP-dependent effects in the general program of the sex hormone action in the above organ.  相似文献

The thermal dehydration test was performed in 12 patients with renal transplant and in 20 healthy subjects. The study was aimed at the evaluation of the effect of volume regulating hormones on electrolyte composition of thermal sweat in patients with renal transplant. Blood plasma renin activity (PRA) as well as plasma concentrations of aldosterone (ALD), vasopressin (AVP) and atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP) were determined before and after thermal dehydration in all the subjects studied. In all the subjects sweat was also collected after 15 and 45 minutes of exposition to heat and the concentrations of sodium, potassium and chloride were determined in all sweat samples. Significantly elevated PRA and ANP concentrations and significantly lowered plasma AVP concentrations but normal ALD levels were found before thermal dehydration test in all the patients with renal transplant. After the exposition to heat lasting 1 hour the direction of changes was similar, their magnitude was, however, different in renal transplant patients than in healthy subjects. In addition, lower concentrations of sodium and chloride in thermal sweat and lower total concentration of sweat solids were found in renal transplant patients than in healthy controls. No significant correlation was found between the plasma concentrations of the hormones determined and the electrolyte concentrations of thermal sweat both in the renal transplant patients and in healthy subjects. The results suggest that the volume regulating hormones have no effect on the electrolyte composition of thermal sweat induced by short exposition to heat both in renal transplant patients and in healthy subjects.  相似文献
