This paper aims to achieve insight into various ecological theories in the Netherlands which have different, and sometimes opposing, views on the conservation of nature. Interviews, publications and archival research brought to light four separate theories: vitalistic/holistic, dynamic, cybernetic and chaos. Diversity is reached through stability according to vitalistic/holistic and cybernetic theories, but through change and instablility according to the dynamic and chaos theories. These two groups are working apart, and continue to have their own ideas. Prediction of the future is only possible with the vitalistic/holistic and cybernetic theories. Ecologists who adhere to these theories feel responsible and able in different ways to change ecological nature towards desirable end goals. The other two theories, dynamic and chaos, appear to be less activist.  相似文献

Mesophyll protoplasts were produced from clones of two cultivars of Medicago sativa, Rangelander and Regen S. Protoplasts from the Regen S clone generally gave rise to calli while those from the Rangelander clone would undergo direct embryogenesis. Effects of plant growth conditions, donor tissue pretreatment and protoplast culture conditions on mesophyll protoplast production and subsequent development patterns were investigated. The major factor determining whether or not mesophyll protoplasts would be produced from either of the clones was the pretreatment in water of shoots excised from the donor plants. Pretreatment in water containing growth regulators did not alter protoplast production or development in the Regen S clone. Pretreatment of the Rangelander clone shoots with abscisic acid or naphthaleneacetic acid was slightly beneficial to embryo production while pretreatment with benzylaminopurine was detrimental. Altered leaf morphology induced by growth condition changes did not affect mesophyll protoplast production or subsequent development patterns when shoots were pretreated in water. Culture of protoplasts in liquid droplets or solid agar medium increased low density protoplast survival and subsequent embryo production in the Rangelander clone.  相似文献

As initial step in the transfer of dwarf bunt resistance from barley into wheat, the two cereal crops were hybridized. Using the wheat cultivars Fukuhokomugi and Chinese Spring (AABBDD genomes) as female parents and barley cultivar Luther (II genome) as male, we synthesized 9 euploid hybrids (2n = 4x = 28; ABDI genomes). The hybrids were vigorous, but highly sterile. Meiotic analyses of seven hybrids showed considerable variation in chromosome pairing. Of the hybrids involving Fukuhokomugi 3 had high pairing with a mean of 5.08–6.72 chiasmata per cell, while others had 2.16–3.52 chiasmata per cell. As many as 12 bivalents in some pollen mother cells would suggest at least some pairing between wheat and barley chromosomes. This level of homoeologous pairing, coupled with some, albeit low, female fertility of the F1 hybrids, could offer an opportunity for intergeneric gene transfers from barley into wheat and vice versa.  相似文献

The bean-pod weevil (BPW), Apion godmani Wagner, often causes heavy losses in crops of common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.). Farmers need resistant bean cultivars to minimize losses, cut production costs, stabilize seed yield, and reduce pesticide use and consequent health hazards. To design effective breeding methods, breeders need new and better sources of resistance and increased knowledge of their modes of inheritance. We therefore: (1) compared sources of resistance to BPW, (2) studied the inheritance of resistance, and (3) determined whether the sources possess similar or different genes for BPW resistance. The following sources of resistance, originating from the Mexican highlands, were evaluated for 3 years at INIFAP-Santa Lucía de Prias, Texcoco, Mexico: Amarillo 153, Amarillo 169, Hidalgo 58, J 117, Pinto Texcoco, Pinto 168, and Puebla 36. All except Puebla 36 were crossed with the susceptible cultivar Jamapa. Amarillo 153 and Puebla 36 were crossed with another susceptible cultivar, Bayo Mex. The parents, F1 hybrids, and F2 populations were evaluated for BPW damage in 1992. Backcrosses of the F1 of Jamapa/Pinto 168 to the respective susceptible and resistant parents were also evaluated in 1992. All seven resistant accessions were crossed in all possible combinations, excluding reciprocals. The resulting 21 F1 hybrids and 21 F2 populations were evaluated for BPW damage in 1994. J 117 had the highest level of resistance to BPW. Pinto Texcoco and Puebla 36 had the highest mean damage score of all seven sources of resistance. The F1 hybrids between susceptible parents and resistant sources were generally intermediate. Two genes segregating independently controlled the BPW resistance in each accession. One gene, Agm, has no effect when present alone, whereas the other gene, Agr, alone conferred intermediate resistance. When both genes were present, resistance to BPW was higher. Based on mean BPW damage scores, all 21 F1 hybrids and their F2 populations, derived from crosses among seven resistant accessions, were resistant. However, data from individual plant damage scores in F2 populations of Amarillo 169/Pinto 168 and Pinto Texcoco/Pinto 168 suggested that at least one gene in each of the three accessions was non-allelic. Data also indicated that Amarillo 169 had a dominant gene that conferred high levels of BPW resistance, irrespective of the alleles at the other locus; and that Pinto Texcoco and Pinto 168 possessed two different genes for intermediate resistance.  相似文献

Summary One hundred and twenty-two varieties, lines and wild accessions of Lycopersicon were screened under three different regimes during the autumn/winter season of 1982–83 and 1983–84 for resistance to tomato leaf curl virus (TLCV). L. hirsutum f. glabratum (B6013) and L. hirsutum f. typicum (A1904) proved to be highly resistant to TLCV in all three environments. Various accessions of L. peruvianum were also highly resistant. L. pimpinellifolium (A1921) exhibited no TLCV symptoms within 90 days. Of the cultivated varieties, Acc 99 exhibited the minimim score for susceptibility; AC 142, Collection No. 2, Kalyanpur Angurlata and HS 101 had a low rating for virus incidence. The inheritance of resistance was studied in the interspecific crosses between a TLCV resistant line of L. pimpinellifolium (A1921) and five (HS 101, HS 102, HS 110, Pusa Ruby and Punjab Chhuhara) susceptible cultivars of L. esculentum. Parents, F1, F2 and backcross progenies were artificially inoculated with local strains of TLCV using vector the viruliferious whitefly, Bemisia tabaci (Genn.). Data indicated that the resistance of L. pimpinellifolium (A 1921) is monogenic and incompletely dominant over susceptibility.  相似文献

Doubled haploid (DH) progeny from a cross between the scald susceptible barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) cultivar Ingrid and the resistant accession CI 11549 (Nigrinudum) was evaluated for resistance in the pathogen Rhynchosporium secalis (Oudem) J.J. Davis. Two linked and incompletely dominant loci confer resistance CI 11549 against isolate 4004. One is an allele at the complex Rrs1 locus on chromosome 3H close to the centromere; the other is located 22 cM distally on the long arm. The latter locus is designated Rrs4. In BC3-lines into Ingrid from CI 2222 (another Nigrinudum) resistance seems governed by one locus close to the telomeric region of chromosome 7H, probably allelic to Rrs2. In neither case did we find any trace of the recessive gene rh8 reported to be present in Nigrinudum. Various resistance donors of Ethiopian origin designated as Nigrinudum, Jet or Abyssinian were identical to a great extent with respect to markers, but differed in resistance to different isolates of scald or in barley yellow dwarf virus (BYDV) resistance. The implications for their use as differentials in scald tests and screening of germplasm collections are discussed.  相似文献

Summary An epidermolytic toxin target was observed in keratohyalin granules of sectioned epidermis by a direct fluorescence procedure using FTC-toxin, but not by an indirect procedure using sequential reaction with toxin, anti-toxin and FTC-secondary antibody. The investigation of the two procedures was extended to keratinocytes. A dispase digestion procedure yielded three fractions which corresponded to basal, spinous and granular cells according to biochemical and morphological criteria. It was shown that the direct and indirect procedures both detected the toxin target in the keratohyalin granules of granular cells, but that the indirect procedure was very insensitive. In control experiments, the profilaggrin of keratohyalin granules was detected readily in cells by a direct procedure using FTC-antiprofilaggrin but only weakly by an indirect double antibody procedure. Insensitivity to indirect procedures thus appears to be a particular property of the keratohyalin granule site. It was shown that the toxin target was readily accessible in permeable (trypsin-isolated) granular cells but inaccessible in impermeable (dispase-isolated) cells.  相似文献

Summary With the aim of dissecting host-parasite interaction processes in the system Lycopersicon aesculentum-Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. lycopersici we have isolated plant cell mutants having single-step alterations in their defense response. A previous analysis of the physiological phenotypes of mutant cell clones suggested that recognition is the crucial event for active defence, and that polysaccharide content, fungal growth inhibition, peroxidase induction in in vitro dual culture and ion leakage induced by cultural filtrates of the pathogen can be markers of resistance. In this paper we present the results of a similar analysis carried out on cell cultures from one susceptible (Red River), one tolerant (UC 105) and three resistant (Davis UC 82, Heinz, UC 90) tomato cultivars. Our data confirm that the differences in the parameters considered are correlated with resistance versus susceptibility in vivo. Therefore, these parameters can be used for early screening in selection programmes. These data, together with those obtained on isolated cell mutants, suggest that the selection in vitro for altered fungal recognition and/or polysaccharide or callose content may lead to in vivo — resistant genotypes. The data are thoroughly discussed with particular attention paid to the importance of polysaccharides in active defense initiation.  相似文献

The number of primary feathers in a birds wing has been used as a systematic character since the first half of the nineteenth century. During the years, though, the definition of which feathers to count as a primary has changed and today the species historically denoted as having only nine primaries are instead said to have, for example, nine functional primaries. In this study, I investigated the borderline between nine-primaried and ten-primaried birds to search for a proper definition of the term nine-primaried. A total of 161 specimens of 104 bird species, mainly passerines, were examined. All species examined had ten primaries although the nine-primaried species had primary ten more or less concealed under primary covert nine. The number of primary coverts has decreased over time, with ten primary coverts as the ancestral state within Passeriformes and nine primary coverts among most oscine species. In conclusion, a proper definition of nine-primaried might be with primary ten concealed by primary covert nine. This definition includes all taxa historically denoted nine-primaried, i.e. systematically it is a definition of a paraphyletic group. The term nine-primaried is thus too inclusive to be of more than very limited systemtic value and, consequently, the New World nine-primaried oscines group might gain from a new denotation.Electronic Supplementary Material Supplementary material is available for this article at  相似文献

As the first step in the transfer of barely yellow dwarf virus resistance and salt tolerance from decaploid tall wheatgrass (Thinopyrum ponticum) into hexaploid bread wheat (Triticum aestivum L.), octoploid intergeneric hybrids (2n = 8x = 56) were synthesized by crossing the tall wheatgrass cultivar Alkar with wheat cvs. Fukuhokomugi (Fuko) and Chinese Spring. (Fuko x Alkar) F1 hybrids were studied in detail. The F1 hybrids were perennial and generally resembled the male wheatgrass parent with regard to morphological features and gliadin profile. Most hybrids were euploid with 56 chromosomes and showed high chromosome pairing. On an average, in 6 hybrids 83.6% of the complement showed chiasmatic association, some between wheat and wheatgrass chromosomes. Such a high homoeologous pairing would be obtained if Ph1, the major homoeologous pairing suppressor in wheat, was somehow inactivated. Some of the Fuko x Alkar hybrids had high pollen fertility (18.5–42.0% with a mean of 31.5%) and high seed fertility (3–29 seeds wtih a mean of 12.3 seeds per spike), offering excellent opportunities for their direct backcrossing onto the wheat parent.  相似文献

As tested progeny have never been obtained, breeding studies on African yams (Dioscorea cayenensisrotundata) are scarce. We report here the first progenies checked by isoenzyme markers. This was made possible by the choice of well-known genitors [one male (cv Zrezrou) and three females (cvs Sopéré, Dahomey and C 20)] and special hybridization conditions. Six enzymatic systems [esterase (EST), isocitrate dehydrogenase (ICD), malate dehydrogenase (MDH), 6-phosphogluconate dehydrogenase (6PGD), shikimate dehydrogenase (SDH), and phosphoglucoisomerase (PGI)] were used to check the progenies and detect outbreeding. Despite the small number of progeny, it was possible to provide information on the genetics of the isoenzymatic systems.  相似文献

The use of the computer metaphor has led to the proposal of mind architecture (Pylyshyn 1984; Newell 1990) as a model of the organization of the mind. The dualist computational model, however, has, since the earliest days of psychological functionalism, required that the concepts mind architecture and brain architecture be remote from each other. The development of both connectionism and neurocomputational science, has sought to dispense with this dualism and provide general models of consciousness – a uniform cognitive architecture –, which is in general reductionist, but which retains the computer metaphor. This paper examines, in the first place, the concepts of mind architecture and brain architecture, in order to evaluate the syntheses which have recently been offered. It then moves on to show how modifications which have been made to classical functionalist mind architectures, with the aim of making them compatible with brain architectures, are unable to resolve some of the most serious problems of functionalism. Some suggestions are given as to why it is not possible to relate mind structures and brain structures by using neurocomputational approaches, and finally the question is raised of the validity of reductionism in a theory which sets out to unite mind and brain architectures.  相似文献

Summary Leghorn, Cornish and White Rock hens were subjected to starvation. Free amino acids were determined in blood samples taken after 48, 72 and 96 h of starvation. A progressive decrease in concentration of the majority of amino acids was found. Changes in amino acid concentrations during starvation were dependent on the breed of hen.  相似文献

The morphology of the respiratory system of the femaleVarroa jacobsoni (Oudemans, 1904) is described. The mobile, appendage-like, emergent peritreme may be raised to lie against the ventral integument or lowered between the third and fourth pair of legs. It is raised when the mite is submerged in the liquid food of the host's brood chamber, where respiration occurs via an external plastron, formed by an airfilm trapped between the rough cuticle of the ventral integument and the retracted legs. The peritreme is also raised when the mite is outside the hive in sub-saturated air, to reduce water vapour transpiration, and it is lowered in the carbon-dioxide-rich and water-saturated hive atmosphere, where it facilitates rapid removal of carbon dioxide. Thus gaseous exchange in the female mites may be adjusted by the position of the peritreme.Key to captions a ascending limb of peritrematic groove - c hollow (haemocoel) core of peritreme - d descending limb of peritrematic groove - e endocuticle - f flange of the inner stigmatic orifice - g peritrematic groove - i funnel of inner stigmatic orifice - k circum-spiracular pocket at base of peritreme - 1 peritrematic slit - m micropapillae - n fringe of marginal setae - o outer stigmatic orifice (=stigma) - p emergent peritreme - r rough integument at bases of leg coxae - s stigmatic atrium - t tracheal atrium - u outer lip of outr stigmatic orifice - v inner lip of outer stigmatic orifice - x tracheal trunks - z thick cuticle of peritrematic groove - 1,2,3,4 numbers of legs or leg coxae  相似文献

Summary Using disomic chromosome substitution lines based on the susceptible wheat cultivar Chinese Spring, loose smut resistance of wheat cultivars Hope and Thatcher was shown to be conferred in each case by a single dominant major gene carried on chromosome 7 A (Hope) or 7 B (Thatcher). Partial resistance was determined by genes on an additional eight Hope or seven Thatcher chromosomes, and similarities were evident between the partial resistance genotypes ofHope and Thatcher. Chinese Spring exhibited a mean infection value of approximately 50%, indicating a significant level of partial resistance, which was found to be due, in part, to genes on the homoeologous chromosome arms 1 As, 1 Es and 1 Ds, and to cytoplasmic genes. Substitution of the Chinese Spring nucleus into the cytoplasm of Aegilops squarrosa, Ae. variabilis or Ae. mutica resulted in increased susceptibility to Ustilago tritici. Several alloplasmic lines of the resistant wheat cultivars Selkirk and Chris exhibited race-specific susceptibility to U. tritici.  相似文献

Summary Two winter wheat genotypes (Diószegi 200 and Mv 15) were compared for their in vitro androgenic capacity. On average, the induction frequency of embryogenic structures was 71.7% in Diószegi 200 and only 4.3% in Mv 15. The haploid induction ability of the two genotypes differed considerably, with Diószegi 200 being much higher. The difference in the in vitro inductability of the microspores may result from genetic differences which are manifested in the survival rate of the microspores during the culture period and their adaptability to in vitro conditions. Special DNA fluorochrornes were suitable for studying the different pathways of in vitro androgenesis. Our data indicate that the repeated equal divisions of the microspore nucleus might lead to pollen embryo formation, and subsequent divisions of the vegetative portion of the pollen grain after the first asymmetric microspore mitosis can result in pollen callus formation.  相似文献

sThe hydrolysis of several esters catalyzed by lipase of Candida rugosa was used to analyse the interaction between the ester substrate and the active site and the geometry and steric restrictions of alk, ar and h subsites. Using 4-R-C H -CH(R)-COOEt and ethyl trans-cinnamate, the presence of a low electronic density zone in the ar pocket is described, the dimensions of the pocket produced by Phe-296 and Leu-297 in the alk subsite and the size of the h subsite are described.  相似文献

I explore the specialization versus generalization paradigm in frugivory and seed dispersal. This view predicts that some tropical trees produce nutritious fruits adapted for use by a small coterie of specialized frugivores that provide reliable seed dissemination. Other tree species are expected to offer superabundant fruits of lower nutritional reward, relying instead on common opportunistic frugivores that are individually less reliable, but collectively disperse seeds effectively. Though widely referenced, many aspects of the paradigm are untested with tropical trees and avian frugivores, primarily because plant ecologists rarely determine whether specialist or generalist foragers are responsible for different patterns of seed distribution, while students of foraging behavior rarely determine the effects seed dispersal by different animals for survival of seeds or seedlings of specialist or generalist trees.Ecological paradigms provide alternative hypotheses, without evolutionary arguments. Keystone species have ecological effects disproportionate to their abundance; it is important for management considerations to know whether fruiting trees or frugivores serve as keystone mutualists in tropical forests. Alternatively, the extent to which vertebrate seed dispersers influence density-dependent seed, seedling, sapling, or adult mortality may have important consequences for spatial dispersion and population dynamics of tree species in tropical forests.  相似文献

Summary An exotic Zea mays L. population (Tuxpeno) was adapted to North Carolina conditions by first introducing genes for adaptability from two North Carolina varieties ([(Jarvis X Indian Chief)Tuxpeno]Tuxpeno) including four generations of intermating, and then selecting for adaptability using maturity as the primary measure. The study evaluated selection for adaptability and the diversity available between adapted Tuxpeno and the local varieties, Jarvis and Indian Chief. Analytical procedures were developed to quantify the diversity between populations and the complementation of local varieties by introduced germ plasms. The analyses utilized the specific effects available from the diallel mating design.Three replicate selections responded similarly under simple recurrent mass selection (1/10) for the earliest disease-free plants initially and additionally for plant types (primarily height) in the final generation. The 1/4 local germ plasm permitted rapid adaptation of Tuxpeno gene pool to local conditions. The adapted Tuxpeno populations yielded similarly to the local populations with an average heterosis for grain yield of 28% when crossed to the local populations used as source of genes for adaptability. The diversity found between adapted Tuxpeno lines and these local varieties based on genes affecting grain yield was 1.5 to 2.5 times that measured between the local varieties (Jarvis and Indian Chief). Diversity lost through intergradation with local material was a reasonable investment. Yield genes introduced from Tuxpeno complemented local gene pools through nonadditive, primarily dominance-associated, gene effects. Reassortment of major gene blocks apparently occurred leading to significant divergence among replicate selections involving both additive-associated and dominance-associated gene effects.Paper No. 6355 of the North Carolina Agri. Summary Large numbers of highly viable mesophyll protoplasts were isolated from shoot cultures of the scion cv Passe Crassane and the rootstock genotype Old Home of common pear (Pyrus communis L.). Protoplasts were cultured for both genotypes either as liquid layers or as liquid-over-agar cultures, in ammonium-free MS medium with 0.5 M mannitol, 50 mg/l casein enzymatic hydrolysate (CEH), 2.0 mg/l NAA and 1.0 mg/l BAP, plus either 0.5 mg/l IAA (for Old Home) or 2.0 mg/l IAA (for Passe Crassane). Protoplast microcalli, obtained by day 60 (Passe Crassane) or day 80 (Old Home), were transferred for further growth to ammonium-free MS medium with 2.0 mg/l NAA and 1.0 mg/l BAP. Shoot bud regeneration from the protoplastderived callus was first attempted between 100 (Passe Crassane) and 120 (Old Home) days after protoplast isolation. For Passe Crassane, shoot buds were regenerated (day 130) on a half-strength MS medium with 0.1 mg/l IBA, 0.5 mg/l BAP, 50 mg/l CEH and 20 mg/l Ca-panthotenate. For Old Home, shoot but regeneration only occurred 30 days later and on the same medium as above, which was additionally supplemented with double the concentration of the group B vitamins found in the original MS formulation and 0.05 mg/l GA3. Following micropropagation and in vitro rooting of shoots, the plants were transferred to soil following standard procedures. Trueness-to-type of the regenerated plants was assessed by analysing their leaf isozyme banding profiles (for EST, AP, PRX, SOD, ENP, LAP, PGI, AAT, ADH, MDH and PGM) and comparing them to those corresponding to the original shoots that provided the protoplasts. No differences between the mother shoots and the protoclones were observed for any one of the 11 isozyme systems studied.  相似文献
