Abstract Fresh dormant redroot pigweed (Amaranthus retroflexus L.) seeds were buried 5 cm deep in the field at Stoneville, MS in November 1981. Potassium nitrate (200 kg ha 1) or nothing was applied to the soil in the fall of 1981 and the late winter of 1982. Seeds were recovered at intervals under darkness during the following 2 years and tested for responses to ethylene, temperature, light and carbon dioxide. During the first overwintering, nitrate enhanced loss of primary dormancy and increases seed sensitivity to temperature, light and ethylene. The loss of dormancy reached a maximum at 25 to 30 weeks (early summer) after burial. Examination of the recovered seeds indicated that about 80% of the non-treated seeds and 98% of the nitrate-treated seeds germinated in situ during the period of maximum loss of dormancy. Thus, after one overwintering period, about 20% of the original buried seed population remained dormant in nontreted soil and 2% remained dormant in the nitratetreated soil. After the second overwintering, the percentages of dormant seeds remaining in nontreated or treated soil were both only 1–2%. Nitrate reduced dormancy and enhanced germination in early summer following the first overwintering. Regardless of treatment, the remaining 1 2% of seeds in soil after the second year were of low sensitivity to the germination stimuli (ethylene, temperature, light) and constituted the long-lived portion of the original seed population.  相似文献

Abstract. The effects of diurnally alternating temperatures and of prolonged burial in the soil on germination response of redroot pigweed ( Amaranthus retroflexus L.) seeds to ethylene were investigated. Percentage germination in a 12 h/12 h, 23° C/35° C temperature regime roughly equalled that observed at constant 35° C, and greatly exceeded that observed at 30°C. Preincubation for 61 d in alternating temperatures, which were gradually increased to simulate soil warming in spring, caused little germination in the absence of ethylene, but considerably enhanced sensitivity to ethylene. Seeds kept in soil in the same temperature regime failed to show the response to ethylene, and the soil itself removed ethylene from the soil atmosphere.
After burial in a field plot either over winter or during the summer, seeds had a very low ethylene response threshold (0.01−0.05 cm3 m−3) and strong response to ethylene (70–95% germination at 51 cm3 m−3 compared to 1–20% without ethylene). Germinability of seeds buried overwinter declined between 10 May (85%) and 24 May (7%), and 90% of those recovered on or after 24 May had a visible rupture in the seed coat. Apparently, germination had begun during burial, but was arrested by unknown causes in an early phase and was followed by seed deterioration.
Although the role of ethylene in germination of buried seeds remains uncertain, the greatly enhanced sensitivity to ethylene observed in pigweed seeds after burial deserves further investigation.  相似文献

Abstract. Germination responses of redroot pigweed ( Amaranthus retroflexus L.) seeds to ethylene were determined at 25, 30, 35, or 40° C after preincubation at various temperatures (15–35° C) for different periods (0.5–32 d). After 7 d preincubation, seeds showed a log-linear germination response to ethylene concentration in most of the temperature treatments. Sensitivity to ethylene increased with longer preincubation; response thresholds of 0.03−0.09 cm3 m−3 were observed after 32 d, compared to 0.18−1.6 cm3 m−3 after 7 d of preincubation. Preincubation at 15 or 20° C generally enhanced germinability, whereas 25 or 30° C produced secondary dormancy, which was readily broken with ethylene. Temperature during preincubation also significantly influenced the slope of the dose-response curve. The responses of preincubated redroot pigweed seeds to ethylene suggested that, in the field, seeds would probably not lose their sensitivity to this gas during prolonged burial in soil.  相似文献

The n-hexane-, acetone- and water-soluble fractions obtained from an aqueous acetone extract of lemon balm (Melissa officinalis L.) shoots inhibited the germination and the growth of roots and shoots of cockscomb (Amaranthus caudatus L.), cress (Lepidium sativum L.), crabgrass (Digitaria sanguinalis L.), timothy (Phleum pratense L.), lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.) and ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum Lam.). The inhibitory activity of the water-soluble fraction was the greatest, followed by that of acetone- and n-hexane-soluble fractions in all bioassays. The effectiveness of these fractions on the roots was greater than that of the shoots of the test plants. Significant reductions in the germination and growth of the roots and shoots were observed as the extract concentration increased. Such rate-dependent responses of the test plants to the fractions suggest that each fraction might contain allelochemical(s), but that the greatest potential was in the water-soluble fraction.  相似文献

During germination, the transmembrane electric potential (PD) of cortical cells of the embryonal axis of radish seeds (Raphanus sativus L.) rises from-120 mV initially to a maximum of-150 mV after 5 h incubation, then falls again to stable values of around-120 mV. Treatments inhibiting germination block the transitory PD increase. Administration of uncoupling agents or low temperatures, during the process of germination, produces a marked fall of the PD transitory increase. Abscisic Acid has a parallel inhibitory effect on PD and germination, while fusicoccin produces a rise in both; administration of abscisic acid with fusicoccin inhibits germination, while the PD remains at the high levels given by fusicoccin. The effect of red and white light on ethylene production was investigated in several plant species. In most cases light inhibited ethylene production. However, stimulation or no effect were also observed in a few species. In those plants where light inhibited ethylene synthesis, the effect of red light was much stronger than that of white light.Both red and white light inhibited ethylene production in green and etiolated seedlings and green leaves of Impatiens balsamina L. The inhibitory effect of red light was stronger than that of white light and much more pronounced when the plants were pretreated with ACC. The effect of red light could be reversed by far-red light. These results suggest that light affects the ethylene forming enzyme (EFE) activity and that its action is mediated by phytochrome.  相似文献

研究了生长于不同生境下的沙芥(Pugionium cornutum(L.)Gaertn.)和斧翅沙芥(Pugionium dolabratum Maxim.)种子萌发对光照和温度的响应。结果表明:沙芥和斧翅沙芥种子在光下萌发受到显著(P0.05)的抑制作用,其中沙芥种子萌发受光的抑制作用强于斧翅沙芥种子。在黑暗10—40℃恒温条件下,沙芥和斧翅沙芥种子在15—35℃范围内均可萌发,在15℃和35℃下沙芥种子的萌发要优于斧翅沙芥种子;其种子分别在25℃和30℃下达到最佳的萌发响应,在此条件下斧翅沙芥种子的萌发特性优于沙芥种子。在黑暗变温条件下,沙芥和斧翅沙芥种子在20/30℃(12h/12h)下达到最佳的萌发响应,此处理下的萌发率高于其各自最佳恒温处理下的萌发率,其萌发后幼苗下胚轴和胚根的长度较最佳恒温处理有明显的下降,但它们的干重却差异较小,说明变温处理有利于两种种子的萌发和形成强壮的幼苗。综上所述,沙芥和斧翅沙芥种子在黑暗和20/30℃变温条件下有利于种子萌发和幼苗建成。  相似文献

The ethylene releasing compound, 2-chloroethylphosphonic acid (ethephon) inhibited nodule development in common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) plants. In contrast, inhibitors of ethylene synthesis or its physiological activity enhanced nodulation. In a co-culture of bean seeds and rhizobia, ethephon inhibited rhizobial growth while inhibitors of ethylene synthesis or action did not influence the growth and proliferation of rhizobia. These data emphasize the role of ethylene as a regulator of nodulation in determinate nodulators and indicate that the ethylene signaling pathway involved in the nodulation process is not limited to the plant host but also involves the bacterial symbiont.  相似文献

Seed viability and germination are key factors in the success of restoration efforts, especially when stored seeds are used. However, the effect of seed storage on germination of most of the native Arabian species is not well documented. We investigated the effect of storage time and role of the seed mucilage in regulating germination, dormancy, salinity tolerance and consequential survival strategy of F. aegyptia in an unpredictable arid desert setting. Effect of light and temperature during germination was studied under two photoperiods and two thermoperiods using intact and de-mucilaged seeds. Presence of mucilage and thermoperiod did not affect the germination. However, seed collection year and photoperiod had a highly significant effect on the germination. Increasing salinity levels decreased the germination of F. aegyptia but ungerminated seeds were able to germinate when salinity stress was alleviated. Seed storage at room temperature enhances the germination percentage, indicating that F. aegyptia seeds have physiological dormancy and it can be alleviated by after-ripening at dry storage. In addition, F. aegyptia seeds show ability to germinate at lower salinity concentration and remain viable even at higher saline conditions, indicating their adaptability to cope with such harsh environmental conditions.  相似文献

研究了不同浓度的钙(Ca^2 )和钙离子载体A23187对水稻早期胚胎离体发育的影响。结果表明:(1)Ca^2 对授粉后3~5d水稻胚胎离体发育的调控具有时间和浓度效应。培养基中不含Ca^2 或Ca^2 浓度较高(10^-1mol/L)时,3d原胚离体分裂和生长完全受到抑制;4~5d早期分化胚受到一定程度的影响;而Ca^2 浓度为10^-3mol/L时,不同时期的水稻胚胎均表现出最佳的生长速度和最高的离体胚胎发生频率;在相同的钙浓度条件下,胚龄越大,胚胎发生频率及总诱导频率越大。(2)A23187影响水稻胚胎的离体生长和形态发生:胚胎越小,影响越大;浓度越高,抑制作用越强。  相似文献

The impact of root exudates, collected from five rice cultivars, on methane (CH4) production was studied in a paddy soil under anaerobic conditions. Root exudates of the cultivars Dular, IR72 and IR65598 collected at four growth stages and of B40 and IR65600 collected at two growth stages showed that (a) CH4 production was commenced rapidly within 2 h upon exudate addition and reached a maximum within a day of addition, and (b) 7-d incubation periods were sufficient to study exudate-induced CH4 production potentials. Among different cultivars, high C releases from roots, increased the methanogenic source strength of the soil, which finally controlled CH4 production. The relationship of the amount of CH4 produced was stronger for the amount of total organic C (r = 0.920) than for the amount of organic acids (r = 0.868) added through exudates. Apparently, CH4 production and CH4 emission are more closely related to the release pattern of root exudate-C than to its individual components. The proportion of exudate-C converted to CH4 ranged between 61 and 83% and remained unaffected by cultivars and growth stages suggesting that the majority of exudate-C served as a methanogenic substrate in the anoxic rice soils. These observations indicate that the use of high-yielding cultivars with lowest excretion (for example IR65598, IR65600) would result in lowest exudate-induced CH4 production. Therefore, cultivar choice could greatly influence regional and global CH4 emissions and screening/selection of exiting rice cultivars, and/or breeding new cultivars with low exudation rates could offer an important methane mitigation option as long as yields are not compromised.  相似文献

We investigated the effect of elevated [CO2] (700 μmol mol?1), elevated temperature (+2 °C above ambient) and decreased soil water availability on net photosynthesis (Anet) and water relations of one‐year old potted loblolly pine (Pinus taeda L.) seedlings grown in treatment chambers with high fertility at three sites along a north‐south transect covering a large portion of the species native range. At each location (Blairsville, Athens and Tifton, GA) we constructed four treatment chambers and randomly assigned each chamber one of four treatments: ambient [CO2] and ambient temperature, elevated [CO2] and ambient temperature, ambient [CO2] and elevated temperature, or elevated [CO2] and elevated temperature. Within each chamber half of the seedlings were well watered and half received much less water (1/4 that of the well watered). Measurements of net photosynthesis (Anet), stomatal conductance (gs), leaf water potential and leaf fluorescence were made in June and September, 2008. We observed a significant increase in Anet in response to elevated [CO2] regardless of site or temperature treatment in June and September. An increase in air temperature of over 2 °C had no significant effect on Anet at any of the sites in June or September despite over a 6 °C difference in mean annual temperature between the sites. Decreased water availability significantly reduced Anet in all treatments at each site in June. The effects of elevated [CO2] and temperature on gs followed a similar trend. The temperature, [CO2] and water treatments did not significantly affect leaf water potential or chlorophyll fluorescence. Our findings suggest that predicted increases in [CO2] will significantly increase Anet, while predicted increases in air temperature will have little effect on Anet across the native range of loblolly pine. Potential decreases in precipitation will likely cause a significant reduction in Anet, though this may be mitigated by increased [CO2].  相似文献

Pot experiments were conducted with a calcareous soil (Inceptisol) to elucidate the effects of bicarbonate (0 and 20 mM) and root zone temperature (15° and 25°C) on the uptake of Zn, Fe, Mn and Cu by "Zn-efficient" and "Zn-inefficient" rice cultivars. Bicarbonate decreased concentrations and total uptake of Zn in shoots of "Zn-inefficient" cultivars, especially of IR 26 at 25°C, but not in Zn-efficient cultivars. Bicarbonate decreased concentrations and uptake of Fe in shoots of Zn inefficient cultivars, particularly in IR 26. Concentrations and total uptake of Mn were lower in bicarbonate treatment in the Zn-inefficient cultivars at 15°C, and in all cultivars at 25°C. However, concentration and uptake of Cu were not affected by bicarbonate in all cultivars. Compared to the 25°C root zone temperature, the concentrations and total uptake of both Zn and Cu in shoots at 15°C were lower in Zn-inefficient than in the Zn-efficient cultivars. The results indicate that Zn-efficiency in rice is causally related to high tolerance of plant to elavated bicarbonate concentrations in soil solution.  相似文献

Wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) cv. Minaret was grown in open-top chambers (OTCs) in 1995 and 1996 under three carbon dioxide (CO2) and two ozone (O3) levels. Plants were harvested regularly between anthesis and maturity to examine the rate of grain growth (dG/dt; mg d–1) and the rate of increase in harvest index (dHI/dt;% d–1). The duration of grain filling was not affected by elevated CO2 or O3, but was 12 days shorter in 1995, when the daily mean temperature was over 3 °C higher than in 1996. Season-long exposure to elevated CO2 (680 μmol mol–1) significantly increased the rate of grain growth in both years and mean grain weight at maturity (MGW) was up to 11% higher than in the chambered ambient air control (chAA; 383 μmol mol–1). However, the increase in final yield obtained under elevated CO2 relative to the chAA control in 1996 resulted primarily from a 27% increase in grain number per unit ground area. dG/dt was significantly reduced by elevated O3 under ambient CO2 conditions in 1995, but final grain yield was not affected because of a concurrent increase in grain number. Neither dG/dt nor dHI/dt were affected by the higher mean O3 concentrations applied in 1996 (77 vs. 66 nmol mol–1); the differing effects of O3 on grain growth in 1995 and 1996 observed in both the ambient and elevated CO2 treatments may reflect the contrasting temperature environments experienced. Grain yield was nevetheless reduced under elevated O3 in 1996, primarily because of a substantial decrease in grain number. The data obtained show that, although exposure to elevated CO2 and O3 individually or in combination may affect both dG/dt and dHI/dt, the presence of elevated CO2 does not protect against substantial O3-induced yield losses resulting from its direct deleterious impact on reproductive processes. The implications of these results for food production under future climatic conditions are considered.  相似文献
