Callow workers of the Florida carpenter ant, Camponotus floridanus Buckley, reared with their sisters displayed more aggressive acts towards unrelated unfamiliar foragers than towards related unfamiliar foragers. When callows were reared with foreign nurses they were more aggressive towards their own unfamiliar sisters than towards the unfamiliar sisters of their nurses. Thus callow workers recognized the sisters of the workers they were reared with as nestmates. This ability was not dependent on whether or not callows received cues from older ants during their emergence. Similarly, a forager was less aggressive towards unfamiliar callows reared with its sisters than towards those reared with nurses unrelated to itself. In addition, foragers were less aggressive towards their callow sisters than towards unrelated callows, regardless of the relatedness between the foragers and the rearing nurses.  相似文献

Colonies of the ponerine antPachycondyla tridentata from Malaysia occur with and without queens. In a total of 7 colonies we found more than 80% of the workers to be mated, irrespective of the presence or absence of queens. This is a hitherto unknown social organisation in ants. Queens and workers competed equally for reproduction. In the colonies investigated several ants were laying eggs. Behavioral observations revealed persistent dominance interactions between colony members. A few ants, but not necessarily a queen, occupied top positions. Removal of the most dominant ants led to a new hierarchy in which subordinate ants with developed ovaries were attacked significantly more frequently than non-reproductive ants. On the average, callows were more aggressive than older subordinate ants, displacing most of the older laying workers in one colony. Nestmate recognition tests revealed that non-reproductive ants were much more aggressive towards foreign ants than were ants with developed ovaries.  相似文献

Agonistic behaviours in colonies of the bumblebeeBombus terrestris   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The first aim of this study was to investigate whether specific changes in the frequencies of behavioural characteristics are correlated with the cause or reflect the onset of the laying of haploid eggs by the queen, and whether these changes cause the onset of egg laying and aggressive behaviour by workers. The second aim was to obtain a better understanding of the occurrence of the behaviours in relation to the physiology and function of the queen and the workers. No behavioural characteristics of workers which could predict the occurrence of the queen's switch to haploid egg laying was found nor did any such behaviour indicate that the switch had already occurred. The onset of worker oviposition was not found to be the consequence of the level or the type of agonistic actions between the workers and the queen. With the onset of worker oviposition the agonistic behaviours called trembling and buzzing, which are directed at the queen, disappear. At the same time the frequency of a non-directed behaviour, called humming, increases. This behaviour is seen particularly in the small housebees with developed ovaries. Before worker oviposition begins, the frequencies with which individual workers perform agonistic behaviour are not correlated with the conditions of their ovaries nor correlated with other characteristics of the workers. However, these frequencies are related to the sequence in which workers emerge. The correlations with age are due to the fact that workers of the first brood have higher activity levels than those of the later broods. The first egg layers are to be found among the first workers. In the period of worker oviposition, humming and the aggressive behaviours of darting and attack are performed by workers with developed ovaries. These behaviours are directed particularly towards workers who also have active ovaries. If the queen has disappeared 1 worker usually becomes dominant. This worker is characterized by the relatively high frequency with which she engages in darting and attacks. In addition, this worker is characterized by a specific behaviour, called pumping, which is directed at workers that have mature eggs in their ovaries. Behavioural domination, however, is no guarantee that the bee concerned will eventually become the most productive one. Although at an apparently pre-determined moment in the ontogeny of the colony the queen loses control over worker oviposition and related behaviours, she remains dominant in various other behavioural hierarchies. It is therefore concluded that the queen never loses dominance completely.  相似文献

1. Bumble bees exhibit worker size polymorphisms; highly related workers within a colony may vary up to 10‐fold in body mass. As size variation is an important life history feature in bumble bees, the distribution of body sizes within the colony and how it fluctuates over the colony cycle were analysed. 2. Ten commercially purchased colonies of Bombus impatiens (Cresson) were reared in ad libitum conditions. The size of all workers present and newly emerging workers (callows) was recorded each week. 3. The average size of bumble bee workers did not change with colony age, but variation in body size tended to decrease over time. The average size of callows did not change with population size, but did tend to decrease with colony age. In all measures, there was considerable variation among colonies. 4. Colonies of B. impatiens usually produced workers with normally distributed body sizes throughout the colony life cycle. Unlike most polymorphic ants, there was no increase in worker body size with colony age or colony size. This provides the first, quantitative data on the ontogeny of bumble bee worker size distribution. The potential adaptive significance of this size variation is discussed.  相似文献

Nestmate recognition was studied in the Southeast Asian stingless beeTrigona (Tetragonula) minangkabau, a species in which worker oviposition has not been observed in queenright or queenless colonies. When conspecific non-nestmate foragers from queenright and queenless colonies were introduced to the observed colony, they were all rejected by guards. Foragers of a different species (Trigona (Tetragonisca) angustula) were also completely rejected. However, conspecific non-nestmate callows were accepted as often as were nestmate callows, although guards recognized the difference. Accepted non-nestmate callows exchanged food with guards equally as much as nestmate callows did.  相似文献

In the queenless ant, Diacamma ceylonense, the cuticular hydrocarbons (C25-C35) of nestmate workers vary in their proportions according to age and fertility. Newly eclosed adults ('callows') initially have the same cuticular profile, but with time this changes to that typical of foragers. In contrast, workers that begin to produce eggs develop a different cuticular profile. Several substances (n-C29 and some methyl C25 and C27) discriminate these different social categories (callows, foragers and egg-layers). In Diacamma ceylonense, inter-colony variation of the cuticular hydrocarbons was much lower than intra-colony variation. We also found qualitative differences between the sexes, with males having a clearly different profile with much more alkanes. We discuss these results in the context of physiological models of the relation between ovarian activity and the synthesis of cuticular hydrocarbons. Variations in cuticular profile are a reliable reflection of ovarian activity, and could be used by ants as a fertility signal.  相似文献

Many behaviours have differential fitness consequences across thermal and ecological contexts, indicating that both ecological shifts and warming temperatures induced by climatic change may alter how organisms behave. However, empirical evidence of temperature-driven behavioural selection in natural systems is lacking. We compared behaviours and behavioural syndromes related to activity, exploration, boldness and aggression in populations of largemouth bass (Micropterus salmoides) from ambient lakes to the those from artificially warmed, power plant cooling lakes to investigate changes in behaviours associated with warmer environments. Activity, exploration, boldness and aggression of juvenile largemouth bass were assessed in laboratory conditions using a novel environment assay and a risky situation assay. We found that activity and exploratory behaviours were higher and decreased through first year ontogeny in populations from heated lakes, whereas these behaviours were lower and showed no relationship through ontogeny in populations from ambient lakes. We attribute these differences to the changes in food source availability in heated lakes associated with temperature-driven ecological effects. Bold and aggressive behaviours tended to differ between populations, as did correlations between behaviours, but did not differ between ambient and heated lakes. The findings of this work identify that large ecological changes associated with warming environments, such as food availability, may drive changes in some aspects of behavioural expression in largemouth bass but that other aspects of behavioural expression may be driven by lake-specific factors not related to warming.  相似文献

In ants, postpharyngeal glands are; the reservoir for the colonial odour which mediates the interindividual recognition. Quantitative and qualitative changes in colonial hydrocarbon profile of these glands were studied in the ant Cataglyphis iberica from emergence of workers. Isolation of callow seems to affect the maturation process. The glandular secretion of the callow workers increases in amount and becomes similar to that of mature workers around 10 d old. However, the rate of hydrocarbon accumulation in the glands of callow workers that were reared in isolation remains lower compared to mature nestmates. Early social isolation also affects the acquisition of the specific colony profile which remains very different from that of their mother colony. These results suggest a transfer of hydrocarbons from matures to callows. This transfer allows the new members of the colony to integrate the colonial odour during the few days following emergence.  相似文献

Androgens are known to mediate aggressive and defensive behaviour in many vertebrate species. However, high concentrations of androgens might also conflict with the expression of nurturing behaviours and therefore a trade‐off can exist between aggressive and nurturing behaviours during parental care. We explored the role of testosterone in paternal care in bluegill sunfish (Lepomis macrochirus), where males provide both sole defence of the young from predators and sole nurturing behaviour such as fanning of the eggs. At the onset of parental care, we manipulated testosterone levels in males using testosterone propionate implants. We then observed the frequency of nurturing and aggressive behaviours displayed by the males over 6 d of parental care. Testosterone‐implanted fish were more aggressive when presented with a brood predator, performing more bites, opercular flares and lateral displays than control males. Testosterone‐implanted males, however, were not less nurturing than control fish, performing similar levels of fanning and nest‐cleaning behaviours. Thus, our results support a positive relationship between testosterone and paternal aggression but no testosterone‐mediated trade‐off between paternal nurturing and aggression.  相似文献

Invasive species are known to competitively displace native species via direct behavioural interactions, or contests, which can result in limited access to valuable resources such as food or shelter for the native. Here, we aimed to determine the dynamics and outcome of agonistic contests between the critically endangered Fitzroy Falls Spiny Crayfish (Euastacus dharawalus) and the invasive yabby (Cherax destructor) in a controlled laboratory setting. Although C. destructor has been listed as a key threatening process for E. dharawalus, the magnitude and nature of its impact have not been formerly assessed. We recorded the frequency and intensity of aggressive interactions between the species, as well as the winner of the contest and subsequent dominance during staged encounters. In addition to this, we recorded the time individuals spent consuming food and actively moving on the substratum. Contrary to our predictions, the frequency of aggressive behaviours performed by the two species did not significantly differ, but E. dharawalus engaged in more intensely aggressive behaviours and was less submissive than C. destructor. As a result, E. dharawalus won significantly more contests than its invasive rival and subsequently achieved a higher dominance score overall. Despite this result, C. destructor spent significantly more time consuming food than did E. dharawalus. These results suggest that dominance in agonistic contests did not translate into dominance over food resources in our study. Ultimately, reduced access to food, combined with the costs of agonistic contests including injury and the relatively low reproductive rates of E. dharawalus indicate that C. destructor may have a negative effect on the survival and persistence of the critically endangered E. dharawalus.  相似文献

As social insect workers mature, outside-nest tasks associated with foraging and defense are typically performed at higher frequencies. Foraging in ants is often a pheromonally mediated collective action performed by mature workers; age-dependent differences in olfactory response thresholds may therefore proximately regulate task repertoire development. In the ant Pheidole dentata, foraging activity increases with chronological age in minor workers, and is chemically controlled. The onset of foraging in minor workers is accompanied by marked neuroanatomical and neurochemical changes, including synaptic remodeling in olfactory regions of the brain, proliferation of serotonergic neurons, and increased brain titers of monoamines, notably serotonin. We examined the linkage of serotonin and olfactory responsiveness by assaying trail-following performance in mature P. dentata minor workers with normal serotonin levels, or serotonin levels experimentally lowered by oral administration of the serotonin synthesis inhibitor α-methyltryptophan (AMTP). By assessing responsiveness to standardized pheromone trails, we demonstrate that trail-following behaviors are significantly reduced in serotonin-depleted workers. AMTP-treated individuals were less likely to initiate trail following, and oriented along pheromone trails for significantly shorter distances than untreated, similar-age workers. These results demonstrate for the first time that serotonin modulates olfactory processes and/or motor functions associated with cooperative foraging in ants.  相似文献

Alarm pheromones, which have been documented in many species of ants, are thought to elicit responses related to aggressive or defensive behaviour. The volatile odour 6-methyl-5-hepten-2-one is described as an alarm pheromone in several species of ants, including the Australian meat ant, Iridomyrmex purpureus. The alarm pheromone is released by displaying workers that aggregate in the characteristic collective display grounds, located mid-way between colonies or near contested food trees. Workers are typically more aggressive at the latter location, and the alarm pheromone may regulate the collective level of aggression. We investigated this possibility by exposing displaying workers to synthesised alarm pheromone 6-methyl-5-hepten-2-one in a field experiment, and measuring their aggressive behaviour. We found no evidence that exposure to synthesised alarm pheromone caused changes in the aggressive level of workers. Subsequent field experiments revealed that the pheromone functions as an attractant, thereby increasing the density of displaying workers. More densely populated workers also display more aggressively, indicating that the interaction rate of displaying workers may determine the level of aggression in collective displays. This underlying mechanism can explain why displaying ants are more aggressive at the more densely populated food-tree locations than those displaying at locations midway between two neighbouring colony nest sites.  相似文献

Abstract Aggressive behaviours of female Drosophila melanogaster (Meigen) (Diptera: Drosophilidae) were studied in the laboratory. These behaviours included 'approach', a seemingly intentional movement of a fly to another fly, 'lunge', a dash at another fly, and 'wings erect', a brief erection of wings toward another fly. These behaviours were influenced by social experience and food resources. First, event frequencies of aggressive behaviours were higher in flies that had been held in isolation than in those that had been held in crowded conditions. This difference was the result of the social experience of attacking flies and not that of attacked flies. Second, flies showed aggressive behaviours more frequently when they were on food containing yeast colonies than when they were on food without yeast colonies. Third, flies conditioned to a food solution containing live yeast prior to observation showed lower frequency of aggressive behaviours than flies conditioned to a boiled food solution. Development of aggressive behaviours became apparent one day after eclosion.  相似文献

We examined male–male competition in guppies (Poecilia reticulata) to test for evidence of hierarchy formation and any subsequent effects on male mating success by comparing the interactions of pairs of males that were siblings and life‐long tank mates with those of unrelated pairs that had never met. These pairs of males were first observed in the absence of a female; then a female was added to gauge the effects of the initial male–male interactions on male sexual behaviour. The unfamiliar/unrelated pairs engaged in significantly more aggressive interactions such as physical contacts, nipping and chasing than the familiar/related pairs. Based on several previous studies, we suggest that familiarity played a greater role than relatedness in the differences in behaviour that we observed. Our results suggest that, in some circumstances, more aggressive males may have more mating opportunities than less aggressive males. Our results also indicate that males adjust their aggressive and courtship behaviours to the perceived intensity of competition for mates, based on the number of mature males in their rearing tanks. We suggest that male–male competition for mating opportunities may play a more important role in the guppy mating system than previously thought.  相似文献

A questionnaire was designed to assess the following: why working people chose to eat or not to eat at a particular time of day; the factors that influenced the type of food eaten; and subjective responses to the meal (hunger before, enjoyment during, satiety afterward). Self-assessments were done every 3h during a typical week containing work and rest days, by one group of 50 day workers and another group of 43 night workers. During the night work hours compared to rest days, night workers evidenced a significantly altered food intake, with a greater frequency of cold rather than hot food (p < 0.001). The type and frequency of meals were influenced significantly more (p < 0.05) by habit and time availability and less by appetite. This pattern continued into the hours immediately after the night shift had ended. In day workers food intake during work hours, compared to rest days, was also influenced significantly more often (p < 0.05) by time availability than hunger, but less so than with night workers. Moreover, day workers were less dependent than night workers upon snacks (p = 0.01), and any significant differences from rest days did not continue beyond work hours. Not only did night workers change their eating habits during work days more than did day workers but also they looked forward to their meals significantly less (p < 0.001) and felt more bloated after consuming them (p < 0.05), such effects being present to some extent during their rest days also. These findings have clear implications for measures designed to ease eating problems that are commonly problematic in night workers.  相似文献

Social organization of the queenless ponerine ant Pachycondyla (Bothroponera) sp. was studied in Bogor, West Java, Indonesia. Colonies had no morphologically distinct queens. Worker number per colony was 11 on average. Most colonies contained multiple mated workers (gamergates), however, only one of them laid eggs, whereas additional gamergates were sterile or ovipositing at a low rate, indicating that this ant species shows functional monogyny. Some virgin workers also developed their oocytes and actually laid eggs. Ritualized dominant — subordinate behavior was frequently observed and a linear dominance hierarchy was established among workers. The topranking individual was a fertile gamergate. Sterile gamergates positioned in lower ranks and they often engaged in foraging. Among virgin workers, callows and young workers monopolized higher ranks.  相似文献

ABSTRACT. Workers whilst still less than a month from emergence rear early stage larvae better in a 16h day than in one of 14h. The callows must perceive the diel rhythm directly because there are no foragers to give them a clue, and the larvae are kept in the dark and cannot respond directly. This, and the study of egg-laying by young workers that preceded it, indicates that the extra hours daylight enable the workers to avoid the reproductive diapause that normally prepares them for hibernation. They retain active ovaries, ingest and share food with larvae either as trophic eggs or as a regurgitate from the crop.
In late summer, callows can rear sexual larvae in spring condition. Queens have a small negative effect on this, expressed as a smaller, though still gyne, pupa produced a little earlier. This weak response to queens develops into a strong negative one at a constant temperature of either 10 or 20°C. The workers then behave as they normally do in spring, and feed a watery regurgitate (dietary control) or, if this fails to arrest sexual development, physically harass the larvae by biting them in the ventral thorax (manipulative control). Large workers then result instead of gynes.  相似文献

In honeybees (Apis mellifera), the process of nectar collection is considered a straightforward example of task partitioning with two subtasks or two intersecting cycles of activity: (1) foraging and (2) storing of nectar, linked via its transfer between foragers and food processors. Many observations suggest, however, that nectar collection and processing in honeybees is a complex process, involving workers of other sub-castes and depending on variables such as resource profitability or the amount of stored honey. It has been observed that food processor bees often distribute food to other hive bees after receiving it from incoming foragers, instead of storing it immediately in honey cells. While there is little information about the sub-caste affiliation and the behaviour of these second-order receivers, this stage may be important for the rapid distribution of nutrients and related information. To investigate the identity of these second-order receivers, we quantified behaviours following nectar transfer and compared these behaviours with the behaviour of average worker hive-bees. Furthermore, we tested whether food quality (sugar concentration) affects the behaviour of the second-order receivers. Of all identified second-order receivers, 59.3% performed nurse duties, 18.5% performed food-processor duties and 22.2% performed forager duties. After food intake, these bees were more active, had more trophallaxes (especially offering contacts) compared to average workers and they were found mainly in the brood area, independent of food quality. Our results show that the liquid food can be distributed rapidly among many bees of the three main worker sub-castes, without being stored in honey cells first. Furthermore, the results suggest that the rapid distribution of food partly depends on the high activity of second-order receivers. Experiments were carried out to determine the influence of food distribution (clumped vs dispersed) on processes of competition among seven captive male hamadryas-like baboons. Spatial cohesion, cohesive behaviours that males performed and received from their females, and aggressive and feeding behaviours of the males were collected during 35 min after food supply. Median values and variability of these variables were compared in both the feeding situations. Food distribution influenced both asymmetries in access and the form of competition. When food was clumped, those with less access fed by means of compensatory or alternative strategies (away from the main source and/or by feeding supplants), and they were more aggressive towards other males. When food was dispersed, all individuals could feed simultaneously, males that were more aggressive were those with less cohesive OMUs, despite the fact that cohesive behaviours remained constant. Females appeared to contribute to variation in the OMU's cohesion through their responses to both food distribution and males' competitive ability.  相似文献

Summary The present paper describes for the first time that adult-to-adult trophallaxis exists in ponerine ants. Furthermore, it shows that the adult castes of the ponerine andHypoponera sp. have different habits of trophallaxis. Workers display a soliciting behavior toward queens, males and workers, but receive regurgitated food only from workers. The workers are forced to stop soliciting for regurgitated food by the whipping behavior of the queen. Callow queens solicit regurgitated food from workers and ergatoid males and receive it, while mature queens do not solicit regurgitation from workers. Ergatoid males receive regurgitated food from workers and regurgitate it to queens. Alate males show no trophallactic food exchange with workers and queens. Trophallactic behavior was never observed between males of either winged or ergatoid types.  相似文献
