ABSTRACT. The structure and ultrastructure of the chitinous lorica of Eufolliculina sp. are described. The lorica is produced from precursor material secreted by the motile swarmer immediately after settling. This material is located in numerous vesicles found in the cortical region of the cells and is secreted by exocytosis. Initially, material is secreted from the ventral part of the cell to produce the attachment plate of the lorica. After this, exocytosis occurs over most of the body surface as the ampulla part of the lorica is constructed. During the later stages of lorica formation, secretion is mainly limited to the anterior of the cell as the neck is formed. The lorica is shaped mainly by the action of the cilia and by the behavior of the cell. While the neck is being formed, the anterior part of the cell is deformed by a local accumulation of cytoplasmic vacuoles. This deformation is employed in shaping the neck. No changes were detected in the organization of the cortical infraciliature during the first stages of lorica formation, but they do occur after the neck has been produced and as the swarmer develops into the sessile form. 相似文献

Light and electron microscopical observations on the stomatogenesis of Coleps amphacanthus Ehrenberg, 1833, show that this "gymno"-stome ciliate has a well developed oral ciliature made of 19–23 "paroral dikinetids" and three "adoral organelles." These structures were previously known as "circumoral ciliature" and "dorsal brosse," and it was thought that they originated from the distal ends of all the 22–26 somatic kineties. Contrary to this view, only four stomatogenic kineties (K1, Kn, Kn-1, and Kn-2) are involved in stomatogenesis of the opisthe. All paroral dikinetids arise from one single kinetofragment (KF1) to the right of the oral anlage while the adoral organelles originate from the three left kinetofragments (KFn, KFn-1, and KFn-2). In particular, the future paroral dikinetids perform a complex morphogenetic movement that leads to a situation where the postciliary microtubules of the once posterior kinetosome of each oral dikinetid give rise to the cytopharyngeal microtubular ribbons. The postciliary origin of the cytopharyngeal ribbons which could only be detected by an EM study of stomatogenesis shows that the basket of Coleps belongs to the cyrtos-type and not to the rhabdos-type basket, where transverse microtubules accompany the basket-forming nematodesmata. The taxonomic implications of these observations, which may lead to a revision of the systematic position of the genus Coleps , are discussed. 相似文献

Abstract Scanning electron microscopical studies revealed four distinct morphological larva-types (not instars) of Priapulus caudatus whose lorica-length measured 82–860 μm. The smallest of the larvae are round to oval, have 20 longitudinal ridges, a series of transverse ridges, and have two pairs of laterally situated tubuli near the posterior limits. The second larva-type is dorsoventrally compressed, has a single dorsal and single unsculptured ventral plate each with a prominent midridge near the anterior limits, three infolded lateral plates with a pair of tubuli near the posterior limits. The third and fourth larva-types remain dorsoventrally flattened; the third larva-type has less pronounced sculpturing than the fourth larva-type and is smaller; two pairs of tubuli are situated as in the previous stage. The number and arrangement of scalids on the introvert and pharyngeal teeth differ according to each of the four larva-types and are described. The ultrastructure of all organ systems is described. All scalids are sensilla equipped with ciliated receptor cells. The cuticle is similar to the cuticle in the adult and differs fundamentally from the cuticle of larval Halicryptus. The trunk is richly supplied with sensory structures. Trunk tubuli contain secretory cells. Posteriorly, a gland complex was found which presumably is the precursor of the equivalent gland in postlarvae and adults. The implications of the first larva-type's structural similarity to the larva of Tubiluchus are discussed. 相似文献

A 1 mm-long Spirostomum with symbiotic chlorellae has been found in the oxygen-depleted sediment of a shallow fen pond in the South of England (UK). The ciliate lives amongst sediment debris, where it builds a lorica that covers about half the length of the ciliate. Summary In Eufolliculina uhligi and other folliculinid ciliates, a territory has been identified that differs ultrastructurally from other areas of the cell, and that is especially sensitive to mechanical stimuli. This territory is located around the anterior oral apparatus of the loricate trophont and posterior to the membranellar spiral of the swarmer. Each cilium in this territory is closely apposed to a small membrane-covered pin that is supported by transverse microtubules of the cilium. In front of the pin, the base of the cilium bulges out; the ciliary membrane is interconnected with the axoneme by filamentous material. Freeze-fractured cilia show a large rectangular particle array at the site of the basal swelling. Only scattered particles have been observed in the pin membrane. It is suggested that the cilium and the pin act as a unit, which has therefore been named the ciliumpin-complex. Comparison with ciliary organelles of unicellular and multicellular organisms indicates that, because of their polar organization, the complexes are involved in the transduction of oriented, presumably mechanical, stimuli. 相似文献

SYNOPSIS. A large heterotrich ciliate (Family: Bursariidae) found in a papyrus swamp in Uganda was used for oxygen tension experiments by Beadle & Nilsson, 1959, under the name of Bursaria sp. This organism has now been identified as Neobursaridium gigas Balech. Four interesting strains of marine ciliates belonging to the genus Dysteria, collected from the coastal area of Qingdao, China, were investigated using living observations and silver impregnation methods. New data are supplied in redefinitions of three poorly known species, all of which had two contractile vacuoles. D. crassipes Claparède and Lachmann, 1859 has a rectangular body about 65 x 35 microm in vivo, with a podite subcaudal on the ventral side and a dorsal spine on some specimens; it has four right kineties, the rightmost two of which extend dorso-apically; both plates of examined specimens had a covering of ectosymbiotic bacteria. D. semilunaris (Gourret and Roeser, 1886) Kahl, 1931 has an oval body about 30 x 16 microm in vivo, with a caudal podite and a groove on the left plate; it also has four right kineties, the rightmost two of which extend dorso-apically. D. pectinata (Nowlin, 1913) Kahl, 1931 also has an oval body and caudal podite, but is larger at about 85 x 40 microm in vivo; it has seven right kineties, the rightmost two of which extend dorso-apically and the leftmost one is short and posterior. The fourth strain was D. brasiliensis Faria et al., 1922, which was found to vary in both shape and the presence or absence of a dorsal spine, it also hosts numerous rod-shaped ectosymbiotic bacteria on both plates of the cell. The growth rate of the ciliate Fabrea salina was studied in batch cultures in the presence of three feeds, tested separately from each other: the Prymnesiophyceae, Isochrysis galbana obtained from pure culture, the Chlorophyceae Dunaliella salina, and the commercially available yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae. F. salina, and D. salina were harvested below the surface from the first evaporation pond and the crystallizer pond, respectively in multi-pond salterns (Sfax, Tunisia). The highest density of Fabrea was recorded with I. galbana (26 ind ml(-1)). However, the greatest length (243 microm) was recorded with Fabrea fed with D. salina. The lowest density, length and biovolume values were recorded with Fabrea fed with S. cerevisiae. The ANOVA test showed that density (F=18, d.f.=57), length (F=33, d.f.=57), and biovolume (F=19, d.f.=57) of Fabrea fed with yeast were significantly different (p<0.001) from those when Fabrea was fed with D. salina and I. galbana. The ciliate Fabrea encountered in the Sfax saltern (Tunisia) might be a valuable food source for Tunisian marine fish hatcheries. 相似文献

对海洋盾纤目纤毛虫,冠帆口虫(Pleuronema coronatum)无性分裂期间口器的发生过程做了跟踪观察。结果显示其口器发生与已知的同属种普氏帆口虫具相似的过程。其口器发生及演化的基本模式可简述如下:老口区的三片小膜经历一个分化和移行过程;前仔虫的口侧膜来源于老口区的口侧膜;后仔虫的小膜1~3与口侧膜均来源于老的口侧膜;在口器发生过程中,前、后仔虫口侧膜的后端均形成一个相应的盾片区,其内的毛基粒在进入营养期之前被完全吸收[动物学报49(6):829~834,2003]。 相似文献

The macronuclear chromatin of the ciliate Blepharisma japonicum, in two starvation states, was studied by thermal denaturation analysis. The behaviour of B. japonicum chromatin, native and reconstituted with Tetrahymena pyriformis H1 histone, was analysed. The data obtained are consistent with the hypothesis that B. japonicum macronuclear chromatin contains a H1-like peptide associated with the linker DNA, although this peptide is reduced in amount and/or chromatin stabilising ability when compared to Tetrahymena macronuclear H1. 相似文献

The morphology and morphometry of five soil haptorid ciliates (Apospathidium terricola, Diplites telmatobius, Armatoenchelys geleii, Paraenchelys terricola, and Spathidium aciculare), collected from a variety of terrestrial habitats in Slovakia (Central Europe), were investigated using live observation
and protargol impregnation. Emphasis was given on the ciliary pattern, the fine structure of dorsal brush, as well as the
shape and size of the extrusomes. The Slovak specimens of A. geleii differ considerably from other populations investigated in detail by body size and micronuclei number. Furthermore, the most
important difference concerns the number of dorsal brush rows (4 vs. 3). Therefore, it was decided to establish a new subspecies,
namely Armatoenchelys geleii barborae ssp. n., for the Slovak population. Shape and nuclear variants of A. terricola and P. terricola are presented and morphometrically characterized. Novel details on the dorsal brush structure of A. terricola and D. telmatobius are reported. Pair formation and exconjugant nuclear reconstruction in P. terricola are described. Trichoduboscqia epeori Léger was found to parasitize nymphs of the mayfly Rhithrogena iridina Kolenati in southwest Germany for a new host record. It was studied by light and electron microscopy. The pansporoblast membrane is evaginated at several points, usually four, to produce long needle-like appendages >20 μm in length with a resilient inner core superficially resembling collagen, which is thought to maintain their orientation. It is suggested that the pansporoblast appendages may play a role in host infection. The structure and ultrastructure of developmental stages are recorded for the first time. Apart from the pansporoblast appendages, the ultrastructure of T. epeori conforms to the general pattern seen in many other pansporoblastic Microspora. Typically 16 spores are produced per pansporoblast but 32-spore pansporoblasts were also found, and the taxonomic significance of this is discussed. 相似文献

The adoral ciliary zone of the rumen ciliates, Entodinium spp., was observed topographically in the SEM. The upper side of the anterior end of the body was indented by the vestibulum, which had cilia arranged on its right wall and ribs along the left wall. The adoral ciliary zone could be divided into at least two arrangements. The outer ciliary zone had many membranelle-like structures, which consisted of cilia arranged radially from the body axis. Each membranelle-like structure consisted of two rows of about eight cilia each lining up in a single file. It was, however, different from a typical membranelle, because its cilia were connected with the vestibular cilia and were arranged not spirally but on a plane. These cilia extended toward the outside because of the projecting cytoplasm from which they originated. In contrast, the cilia of the inner ciliary zone were aggregated to form relatively unsystematic bundles. Since the vestibular opening was slanted on the upper side of the body, the ciliary bundles were thick on the lower side and sparse on the upper side of the body. Neither outer nor inner ciliary zones completely surrounded the vestibular opening. The ciliature started from the left side of the vestibular opening, encircled the lower side of the body, and entered the vestibulum from its right side. The functions of these two types of ciliary arrangements are discussed. 相似文献

The adoral ciliary zone of Cycloposthium spp., inhabiting the large intestine of the horse, was studied by scanning electron microscopy. It could be divided into four parts: outer, inner, left, and right zones. The outer zone, extending on the anterior periphery of the apical cone of the body, had 20 tuft-like syncilia arranged radially around the longitudinal axis. Each ciliary tuft consisted of about 170 cilia, and in cross section it had a rectangular shape. The cilia of the inner zone, situated at the top of the apical cone, were aggregated irregularly to form shorter bundles than the tufts of the outer zone. The innermost cilia of this zone were shorter than the outermost. There was a distinct non-ciliated border between the outer and inner zones. A horseshoe-like operculum having no cilia was present at the center of the adoral ciliary zone, and the opening of the vestibulum was situated as a cleft crossing from the center to the right periphery of this zone. No cilia extended onto the vestibular wall. The left ciliary zone was situated beneath the outer zone and consisted of five short rows of barren kinetosomes of which only the central row possessed very short cilia. The right ciliary zone, consisting of a few rows of cilia situated at the bottom of the inner adoral lip, was also easily distinguished from the other ciliary zones. This zone was interpreted as an extension of the outer adoral zone passing along the right side of the apical cone.
