Genetic diversity in a pair of cirripede species, based on electrophoretic analysis of 25 gene loci, is higher for Chthamalus stellatus, the species with a broader biogeographical distribution, and hence, with a broader ecological niche, than that of Euraphia depressa. Comparing the genetic diversity within E. depressa we again report a higher genetic diversity among the specimens exposed to solar radiation (living in the wider ecological niche) versus the specimens confined to the sheltered dark environments in caves or under boulders. The indices of genetic diversity used in this study are polymorphism, heterozygosity, mean number of alleles per locus and gene diversity. We conclude that the niche-width variation hypothesis has been confirmed in this pair of species: genetic diversity is positively correlated with niche breadth.  相似文献

A new species of the insect order Zoraptera, Zorotypus pusillus, sp. n., is described and illustrated based on two ill‐preserved specimens in mid‐Cretaceous amber from the Hukawng Valley in northern Myanmar. Compared with known extinct zorapterans, the new species possesses eight‐segmented antennae and can be readily distinguished from all other extinct and recent members of the order in the presence of a shallow groove connecting two antennal sockets and by unique spination of the metafemur and metatibia. The earliest known suspicious mating behavior of Zoraptera, the intromittent organ of the fossil zorapterans, the egg, and the earliest known basal plate of the male genitalia are briefly discussed. The genitalia of new species are used as an intromittent organ in the majority of mating patterns among living zorapterans. The mating patterns (a copula is performed by males and females) of the most extant species have been present since at least the mid‐Cretaceous. A shared similar aedeagal structure in the new species and in the most extant species suggests an analogous mating behavior.  相似文献

Due to the great number of greater flamingos in captivity and their long life span, studying their behavior and welfare might be useful to improve the husbandry and breeding of this species in zoos. This study aimed to investigate factors affecting the breeding activity of captive greater flamingos (Phoenicopterus roseus) from 2012 to 2016. To estimate reproductive success, the number of pairs, eggs laid, and hatchlings were recorded. In addition, information on age, egg-laying history of the partners, and pair composition was collected. An increase in the number of pairs, eggs, and hatchlings was reported over the years. For each breeding season, there were pairs who laid more than once, especially in 2014 and 2015. Approximately 50% of pairs were monogamous between consecutive years; however, the percentage dropped gradually when comparing nonconsecutive years. Senescence and previous experience seemed to affect the reproductive success of the study flamingos. In conclusion, different factors can influence the reproduction of greater flamingos in zoos. All these factors are related to nonhuman animal welfare and need to be considered in developing and improving management practices.  相似文献

With more than 40,000 species, Malacostraca is the most diverse crustacean class. Most malacostracans are gonochoristic, but simultaneous hermaphrodites are also known. Tanaidacea is one of two malacostracan orders that includes simultaneously hermaphroditic species; so far, simultaneous hermaphroditism has been confirmed externally and internally in only two tanaidacean species, both in the genus Apseudes (Apseudidae). Here we show, through external and internal morphological observations of fixed specimens, that the apseudid Falsapseudes bowmani is a simultaneous hermaphrodite, making Falsapseudes the second tanaidacean genus in which simultaneous hermaphroditism has been confirmed both externally and internally. In this species, the epistome (a projection on the clypeus) was thick and elongate in large specimens but was thin and spiniform in smaller specimens; the brooding of eggs or embryos was observed only in thin‐epistome individuals, although a pair of ovaries was confirmed in both thick‐ and thin‐epistome individuals. This suggests that individuals with a thick epistome may act as males while also retaining the female reproductive organs.  相似文献

This study reports the discovery of the exclusive predation of sea turtle hatchlings by several juvenile blacktip reef sharks (Carcharhinus melanopterus) in Chagar Hutang bay on Redang Island, Malaysia, in the South China Sea. Three dead specimens of C. melanopterus were retrieved from ghost nets, and the entire digestive tracts of these sharks solely contained the partially digested bodies of sea turtle hatchlings, with no evidence of the remains of any other prey. Thus, juvenile C. melanopterus may opportunistically feed primarily on turtle hatchlings during times when hatchling abundance is high.  相似文献

The only previously known Mesozoic fossils of the chilopod order Geophilomorpha are two species from the Late Jurassic and Late Cretaceous, both known from single specimens that cannot be assigned with precision to a family. Four specimens from the Late Cretaceous (earliest Cenomanian) amber of Burma include three that can be identified as conspecific, described here as Kachinophilus pereirai gen. nov. sp. nov. These specimens preserve greater morphological detail in comparison with other fossil geophilomorphs: the form and fine features of the head, the maxillary complex, the trunk sternites with associated glandular pores and the ultimate pair of legs defend the assignment of the species to the extant family Geophilidae, and most probably to a derived subgroup including well‐known extant genera such as Ribautia Brölemann, 1909. Confocal laser scanning microscopy supplements examination under incident and transmitted light to document details of high taxonomic relevance in the head and the forcipular segment. The modern appearance of this species and its membership among deeply nested extant clades are consistent with molecular estimates that most of the diversity of crown‐group Geophilomorpha originated before the Late Cretaceous.  相似文献

Similarity of dispersal behavior among siblings is common invertebrates. However, little is known about the factors (genetic,prenatal, postnatal) generating this similarity. Here we analyzedpotential influences on the dispersal patterns of multiple familiesof hatchling fence lizards, Sceloporus occidentalis. We capturednear-term females from the field, incubated their eggs in thelaboratory, measured various traits of the hatchlings and dams,and then released the hatchlings at a number of sites in nature.We recaptured hatchlings 5–6 weeks later and measuredthe direct distance to the release site. Because we treatedhatchlings (from eggs to release) randomly with respect to sibship,we eliminated the possibility that any observed sibling similarityin dispersal is merely an artifact of common postnatal influences.To analyze dispersal, we developed a new method that does notmake an arbitrary choice of a threshold distance separatingdispersers from nondispersers. We found a significant familyeffect on dispersal. We suspect that this family effect originatesfrom genetic influences rather than from prenatal ones. Indeed,hatchling dispersal was remarkably unrelated to numerous traits(of clutches, mothers, or hatchlings) that might reflect prenataleffects. However, we did find that males were more likely todisperse than females, as predicted for polygynous species.Finally, characteristics of the release site did not appearto influence dispersal.  相似文献

To elucidate the factors responsible for the evolution of host specialisation, prey capture performance in hatchlings of two sibling ladybird species, Harmonia yedoensis and H. axyridis, feeding on four aphid species was examined. Harmonia yedoensis is a specialist predator that preys only on pine aphids in the field, whereas H. axyridis is a generalist predator with a broad prey range. 2. In H. yedoensis, sibling cannibalism in each clutch was intense and predation against pine aphid as well as other aphid species was moderately successful. In contrast, the predation success rate of H. axyridis against pine aphid was quite low. 3. Moreover, it was experimentally shown that increased maternal investment enhanced prey capture performance against pine aphid in H. yedoensis but not in H. axyridis hatchlings, despite their increased body size due to maternal investment. 4. In addition, morphological and behavioural analysis showed that hatchlings of H. yedoensis had longer legs and a larger head capsule size and could walk faster than H. axyridis. 5. In summary, the interactive effects between a large amount of maternal investment and morphological specialisation of the first instars may enable H. yedoensis to capture the pine aphid efficiently, a highly elusive prey for ladybird hatchlings. The ability of H. yedoensis to utilise the three other aphid species in addition to the pine aphid suggests that a trade‐off in prey capture performance is not the main factor in the host specialisation of H. yedoensis.  相似文献

Summary

This paper compares aspects of the reproduction of a semelparous triclad, Dendrocoelum lacteum, with those of an iteroparous triclad, Dugesia polychroa. Cocoon output was less sensitive to ration and possibly temperature for the former as compared with the latter species. Cocoons of D. lacteum were on average bigger and contained more hatchlings than those of D. polychroa. The sizes of hatchlings did not differ between species, but for D. lacteum only, the hatchlings emerging from late cocoons were significantly larger, and less numerous, than those emerging from earlier cocoons. Possible reasons for these differences are considered.  相似文献

We report on a sensational find in central Spain of six specimens of Thyreophora cynophila ( Panzer, 1798 ), a colourful, strange‐looking piophilid fly living on carcasses of big mammals in advanced stages of decay. Published data suggest that the species is known exclusively from central western Europe (Germany, Austria and France), and was observed last near Paris, France, in the late 1840s, i.e. more than 160 years ago. Accordingly, T. cynophila was placed in 2007 as the only dipteran on a list of recent European animals considered to be globally extinct. Collection‐based data from all 16 known extant specimens found in seven European natural history museums revealed a specimen without date of T. cynophila from Algiers, Algeria. The status of the three thyreophorine piophilids known from Europe is summarized. For the smallest species we reinstate the name Centrophlebomyia anthropophaga ( Robineau‐Desvoidy, 1830 ) with Centrophlebomyia orientalis Hendel, 1907 as a subjective junior synonym ( syn.n. ). We speculate as to why thyreophorines, and T. cynophila in particular, have evaded detection for so long.  相似文献

Reptalus iguchii (Matsumura 1914) comb. nov., previously known from female specimens, is recognized for the first time in the Republic of Korea. This species is sexually dimorphic, based on observations of a pair in copula. Detailed morphological characters of both male and female were studied and are illustrated. Also, sequence data from ribosomal internal transcribed spacer 2 (ITS2) and cytochrome oxidase subunit I (COI) genes were used to distinguish males and females of the only other congener known from Korea, R. quadricinctus (Matsumura 1914). Artemisia and Prunus are recorded as potential hosts in the Republic of Korea for the first time.  相似文献

番荔枝科(Annonaceae)是基部被子植物木兰目(Magnoliales)中较进化且物种数最多的科。目前的系统发育研究将番荔枝科划分为4个亚科,即蒙蒿子亚科(Anaxagoreoideae)、澄光木亚科(Ambavioideae)、番荔枝亚科(Annonoideae)和排石木亚科(Malmeoideae),有107属,2 400多种,中国原产21 属约110 种。番荔枝科泛热带分布,是热带植物区系的优势类群,中国云南盈江位于云南省最西部边境,与缅甸东北部接壤,并与印度的东阿萨姆较近,植物区系处于东南亚(印度—马来西亚)热带生物区系向东亚亚热带-温带生物区系的过渡地带,属典型热带北缘性质,在植被地理和生物地理上十分重要,成为生物多样性保护的关键和热点地区。该区的热带雨林是印度阿萨姆和缅甸北部的热带雨林向东和向北扩散分布的边缘类型,是东南亚热带雨林在纬度和海拔分布上的极限类型。该文报道了采自中国云南省盈江县,引种保存于中国科学院西双版纳热带植物园的番荔枝科哥纳香属2个中国新记录种,即皱叶哥纳香 [Goniothalamus sesquipedalis(Colebr. ex Wall.)Hook. f. & Thomson]和长梗哥纳香(G. peduncularis King & Prain)。Flora of China将盈江哥纳香(G. lii X. L. Hou & Y. M. Shui)处理为云南哥纳香(G. yunnanensis W. T. Wang)的异名,基于活植物观察、馆藏标本和文献研究,该文对盈江哥纳香的分类地位进行了澄清,将其处理为长梗哥纳香的异名。皱叶哥纳香原记载产于印度、孟加拉国和缅甸等地,长梗哥纳香仅产于缅甸,该文对它们进行了补充描述,并提供彩色图版以便于鉴别。凭证标本存放于中国科学院西双版纳热带植物园标本馆(HITBC)。哥纳香属2个新记录的发现,丰富了中国番荔枝科植物多样性的认识,为中国云南热带植物区系属于热带亚洲(印度—马来西亚)植物区系,以及与缅甸北部、印度东北部植物区系的关系增加了例证。  相似文献

Morphological examination of Potamoglanis specimens from three localities in the Essequibo River basin, Guyana, and one location in the Branco River basin, Brazil, confirmed their identification as Potamoglanis wapixana – a species originally described from only the Branco River basin. Morphological similarity of these miniature catfishes on opposite sides of the Rupununi savannah watershed divide and new records from lentic habitat suggest that either their modern populations predate the Pliocene division of the Branco and Essequibo rivers or the species is capable of living in and/or migrating across the Rupununi Portal – a seasonally flooded hydrological connection known to facilitate the movement of mostly much larger fishes between the Branco and Essequibo basins.  相似文献

Temperate species of turtles hatch from eggs in late summer. The hatchlings of some species leave their natal nest to hibernate elsewhere on land or under water, whereas others usually remain inside the nest until spring; thus, post-hatching behavior strongly influences the hibernation ecology and physiology of this age class. Little is known about the habitats of and environmental conditions affecting aquatic hibernators, although laboratory studies suggest that chronically hypoxic sites are inhospitable to hatchlings. Field biologists have long been intrigued by the environmental conditions survived by hatchlings using terrestrial hibernacula, especially nests that ultimately serve as winter refugia. Hatchlings are unable to feed, although as metabolism is greatly reduced in hibernation, they are not at risk of starvation. Dehydration and injury from cold are more formidable challenges. Differential tolerances to these stressors may explain variation in hatchling overwintering habits among turtle taxa. Much study has been devoted to the cold-hardiness adaptations exhibited by terrestrial hibernators. All tolerate a degree of chilling, but survival of frost exposure depends on either freeze avoidance through supercooling or freeze tolerance. Freeze avoidance is promoted by behavioral, anatomical, and physiological features that minimize risk of inoculation by ice and ice-nucleating agents. Freeze tolerance is promoted by a complex suite of molecular, biochemical, and physiological responses enabling certain organisms to survive the freezing and thawing of extracellular fluids. Some species apparently can switch between freeze avoidance or freeze tolerance, the mode utilized in a particular instance of chilling depending on prevailing physiological and environmental conditions.  相似文献

The dispersal behavior of the larvae of a leaf beetle, Galerucella nipponensis, was investigated to analyze the dynamic interaction between the leaf beetle and its aquatic host plant, Trapa japonica. The hatchlings dispersed from the hatched leaf to other leaves in a rosette within 12 h. Some larvae even dispersed on the water surface. As a result, the hatchlings distributed uniformly within the rosette. This larval dispersal appeared to be adaptive behavior responding to a rapid turnover of T. japonica leaves. Cytogenetic data in cartilaginous fishes are currently very inconsistent, considering that the karyotype morphology of only about seventy living species is actually known. Only in the last few years different molecular approaches, first of all physical mapping on metaphase chromosomes, have been used to investigate the cytotaxonomic relationship existing inside this interesting group of vertebrates. The aim of the work was to characterize new molecular chromosomal markers both to discriminate the different chromosome pairs and to distinguish the probable sex chromosomes in the species Torpedo torpedo, since its karyotype does not seem to exhibit heterochromosomes. Evolution of the SRY gene has received considerable attention, mainly because it has been shown to be the sex-determining locus in mammals. The gene is located in the Y chromosome where it normally occurs as a single copy. Using primers taken from the conserved SRY sequences, we characterized these regions at the molecular level and localized them on metaphase chromosomes. The PCR products revealed similar patterns in specimens of both sexes of T. torpedo, but only one fragment of the male amplification product showed a high percentage of identity with human spermatogenesis related genes, SPATA 16, SPATA 18 and UTY. Fluorescent in situ hybridization with these sequences showed the presence of spots at the subtelomeric level of two chromosome pairs in the male and of one pair in the female. Finally, these sequences are particularly useful as chromosome markers to differentiate between the male and the female karyotypes in this species.  相似文献

A short collecting expedition to Vietnam in 2016 yielded 700 specimens of 170 liverwort species of which 79 were new to the flora of Vietnam, including 43 species new to Indochina. Many of the newly recorded species have meta-Himalayan distributions (that predicts occurrence of these taxa in the areas of north-west Vietnam situated in the south-easternmost spurs of the Himalaya). Some species were recorded based on the study of living material, permitting the examination of oil body characteristics for Riccardia and Calypogeia. The known taxonomic liverwort diversity of Vietnam is currently 379 taxa, estimated to represent ca 80% of the actual taxonomic diversity in the country.  相似文献

The genus Anthurium (Araceae) is one of the most taxonomically complex genera in the neotropics. Studies of living material have shown modes of behavior which probably have a direct influence on pollination biology and evolution. Separation of the sexes is generally accomplished by marked protogyny. Considerable differences also exist in the rate of development of flowers, the presence, source and amount of stigmatic nectar, as well as the method of pollen presentation. The genus exhibits an unusual pattern of staminal emergence. In all species studied, the lateral pair of stamens are first to emerge, usually one at a time, followed by the anterior, then the posterior stamens of the alternate pair. There are also differences in the degree of exsertion, the disposition with respect to the stigma, degree of retraction and changes in pollen color. Some species have stamens which are retracted completely after opening: others have stamens which scarcely emerge but instead force the pollen out in long ribbons. Important differences also exist in flower aromas with both fly and bee pollination syndromes exhibited. All of these aspects of flowering behavior are natural phenomena believed to be important in pollination biology.  相似文献
