Background: We aimed to determine the association between self-reported birth weight and incident cancer in the Women's Health Initiative Observational Study cohort, a large multiethnic cohort of postmenopausal women. Methods: 65,850 women reported their birth weight by category (<6 lbs, 6–7 lbs 15 oz, 8–9 lbs 15 oz, and ≥10 lbs). All self-reported, incident cancers were adjudicated by study staff. We used Cox proportional hazards regression to estimate crude and adjusted hazard ratios (aHR) for associations between birth weight and: (1) all cancer sites combined, (2) gynecologic cancers, and (3) several site-specific cancer sites. Results: After adjustments, birth weight was positively associated with the risk of lung cancer (p = 0.01), and colon cancer (p = 0.04). An inverse trend was observed between birth weight and risk for leukemia (p = 0.04). A significant trend was not observed with breast cancer risk (p = 0.67); however, women born weighing ≥10 lbs were less likely to develop breast cancer compared to women born between 6 lbs-7 lbs 15 oz (aHR 0.77, 95% CI 0.63, 0.94). Conclusion: Birth weight category appears to be significantly associated with the risk of any postmenopausal incident cancer, though the direction of the association varies by cancer type.  相似文献

Aims. We conducted a large registry-based study in California to investigate the association of perinatal factors and childhood leukemia with analysis of two major subtypes, acute lymphocytic leukemia (ALL) and acute myeloid leukemia (AML). Methods. We linked California cancer and birth registries to obtain information on 5788 cases and 5788 controls matched on age and sex (1:1). We examined the association of birth weight, gestational age, birth and pregnancy order, parental ages, and specific conditions during pregnancy and risk of total leukemia, ALL and AML using conditional logistic regression, with adjustment for potential confounders. Results. The odds ratio (OR) per 1000 g increase in birth weight was 1.11 for both total leukemia and ALL. The OR were highest for babies weighing ≥4500 g with reference <2500 g: 1.59 (95% CI: 1.05–2.40) and 1.70 (95% CI: 1.08–2.68) for total leukemia and ALL, respectively. For AML, increase in risk was also observed but the estimate was imprecise due to small numbers. Compared to average-for-gestational age (AGA), large-for-gestational age (LGA) babies were at slightly increased risk of total childhood leukemia (OR = 1.10) and both ALL and AML (OR = 1.07 and OR = 1.13, respectively) but estimates were imprecise. Being small-for-gestational age (SGA) was associated with reduced risk of childhood leukemia (OR = 0.81, 95% CI: 0.67–0.97) and ALL (OR = 0.77, 95% CI: 0.63–0.94), but not AML. Being first-born was associated with decreased risk of AML only (OR = 0.70; 95% CI: 0.53–0.93). Compared to children with paternal age <25 years, children with paternal age between 35 and 45 years were at increased risk of total childhood leukemia (OR = 1.12; 95% CI: 1.04–1.40) and ALL (OR = 1.23; 95% CI: 1.04–1.47). None of conditions during pregnancy examined or maternal age were associated with increased risk of childhood leukemia or its subtypes. Conclusions. Our results suggest that high birth weight and LGA were associated with increased risk and SGA with decreased risk of total childhood leukemia and ALL, being first-born was associated with decreased risk of AML, and advanced paternal age was associated with increased risk of ALL. These findings suggest that associations of childhood leukemia and perinatal factors depend highly on subtype of leukemia.  相似文献

BackgroundZn-deficiency has been associated with numerous alterations during pregnancy including low birth weight; however, the research relating neonatal zinc status and birth weight has not produced reliable results.ObjectiveTo compare the serum Zn-levels of cord blood in healthy newborns and low birth weight newborns, and to assess a possible relationship between zinc concentration and neonatal birth weight and gestational age.Material and methods123 newborns divided in “study group” (n = 50) with <2500 g birth weight neonates and “control group” (n = 73) with ≥2500 g birth weight neonates were enrolled. Study group was subdivided according to gestational age in preterm (<37 weeks) and full-term (≥37 weeks). Serum cord blood samples were collected and the Zn-levels were analyzed using flame Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometry method and the result was expressed in μmol/L. The Zn-levels were compared between the groups (Mann–Whitney-U test) and the Zn-levels were correlated with the birth weight and gestational age (Spearman's rank correlations).ResultsStatistically significant low positive correlation between Zn-levels and birth weight (ρ = 0.283; p = 0.005) was found. No statistically significant difference between Zn-levels of study and control groups [17.00 ± 0.43 vs. 18.16 ± 0.32 (p = 0.053)] was found. Statistically significant low positive correlation between Zn-levels and gestational age (ρ = 0.351; p = 0.001) was found. No statistically significant difference between Zn-levels of preterm as compare to full-term newborns [16.33 ± 0.42 vs. 18.43 ± 0.93 (p = 0.079)] was found. Zn-level of preterm subgroup was significantly lower compared to control group (p = 0.001).ConclusionsDespite low birth weight preterm neonates had significantly lower serum zinc levels of cord blood than healthy term neonates, the correlation between cord blood zinc levels and birth weight and gestational age was lower. The results are not enough to relate the change in cord blood zinc concentration to the birth weight values or gestational period. In relation to complicated pregnancies, further studies regarding zinc levels in blood in our population are required.  相似文献

Purpose: Little is known about the relationship between physical activity and thyroid cancer risk, and few cohort data on this association exist. Thus, the present study aimed to prospectively examine long-term activity and risk of papillary thyroid cancer among women. Methods: 116,939 women in the California Teachers Study, aged 22–79 years with no history of thyroid cancer at cohort entry, were followed from 1995–1996 through 2009; 275 were diagnosed with invasive papillary thyroid cancer. Cox proportional-hazards regression provided relative risk (RR) estimates and 95% confidence intervals (CI) for associations between thyroid cancer and combined strenuous and moderate recreational physical activity both in the long-term (high school through age 54 years or current age if younger than 54 years) and recently (during the three years prior to joining the cohort). Results: Overall, women whose long-term recreational physical activity averaged at least 5.5 MET-hours/week (i.e. were active) had a non-significant 23% lower risk of papillary thyroid cancer than inactive women (RR = 0.77, 95% CI: 0.57, 1.04). RR estimates were stronger among normal weight or underweight women (body mass index, BMI < 25.0 kg/m2, trend p = 0.03) than among overweight or obese women (trend p = 0.35; homogeneity-of-trends p = 0.03). A similar pattern of risk was observed for recent activity (BMI < 25 kg/m2, trend p = 0.11; BMI  25 kg/m2, trend p = 0.16; homogeneity-of-trends p = 0.04). Associations for long-term activity did not appear to be driven by activity in any particular life period (e.g. youth, adulthood). Conclusions: Long-term physical activity may reduce papillary thyroid cancer risk among normal weight and underweight women.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to evaluate effects of two production systems (spring and winter), sex and birth type on growth performance in Norduz lambs. Data were collected using 103 and 140 lambs born during the winter and spring, respectively. Lambs born in the winter were heavier (P < 0.01) than those born in the spring at birth, 90 and 180 days of age by 0.5, 1.6 and 1.7 kg, respectively. Ram lambs were heavier (P < 0.01) than ewe lambs at birth, 90 and 180 days of age by 0.5, 1.0 and 2.3 kg, respectively, while lambs born as singles were heavier (P < 0.01) than lambs born as twins at birth, 90 and 180 days of age by 0.9, 1.6 and 2.3 kg, respectively. Lambs born in the winter recorded a higher (P < 0.01) pre-weaning ADG (15 g/day) than spring-born lambs, while ram lambs recorded a higher (P < 0.01) pre-weaning ADG (11 g/day) than ewe lambs. The effect of birth type was not significant on pre-weaning ADG. The influence of lambing season and sex were also not significant on post-weaning ADG. Lambs born as singles recorded a higher (P < 0.01) post-weaning ADG (16 g/day) than lambs born as twins. Results suggest the winter season to give rise to heavier lambs at weaning and post-weaning and suggest lambs born in different seasons to have distinctly different growth patterns. The data also confirm that the influence of sex and type of birth on growth to be very important and to be take into account sheep production.  相似文献

Introduction: Obesity is a well-established risk factor for postmenopausal breast cancer, but mechanisms underlying the association are unclear. Adipocyte-derived, cytokine-like adipokines have been suggested as contributory factors. To evaluate their association with breast cancer risk factors and breast cancer risk, we conducted a nested case-control study of 234 postmenopausal breast cancer cases and 234 controls in a cohort of U.S. women with prospectively-collected serum samples obtained in the mid 1970s and followed for up to 25 years. Methods: Adiponectin, absolute plasminogen activator inhibitor-1 (aPAI-1), and resistin were measured by a multiplex immunoassay. Sex hormones were available for 67 cases and 67 controls. Results: Among controls, we found that lower levels of adiponectin and higher levels of aPAI-1 were correlated with increasing levels of estradiol (Spearman r = ?0.26, p-value = 0.033; r = 0.42, p = 0.0003), decreasing levels of sex hormone binding globulin (r = 0.38, p = 0.0013; r = ?0.32, p = 0.0076), and increasing body mass index (BMI) (r = ?0.31, p =  < 0.0001; r = 0.39, p =  < 0.0001). Hormones were not associated with resistin. Among the relatively small percentage of women using postmenopausal hormones at the time of blood collection (13.7%), aPAI-1 levels were higher than in non-users (p = 0.0054). Breast cancer risk was not associated with circulating levels of adiponectin (age-adjusted p for linear trend = 0.43), aPAI-1 (p = 0.78), or resistin (p = 0.91). The association was not confounded by BMI, parity, age at first full-term birth, age at menopause, current postmenopausal hormone use, and circulating sex steroid hormones. Furthermore, adipokine associations were not modified by BMI (p > 0.05). The lack of association with risk may be due to measurement error of the laboratory assays. Discussion: lower levels of adiponectin and higher levels of aPAI-1 measured in prospectively-collected serum from postmenopausal women were associated with increasing BMI but not breast cancer risk.  相似文献

While the neuroprotective benefits of estrogen and progesterone in critical illness are well established, the data regarding the effects of androgens are conflicting. Surgical repair of congenital heart disease is associated with significant morbidity and mortality, but there are scant data regarding the postoperative metabolism of sex steroids in this setting. The objective of this prospective observational study was to compare the postoperative sex steroid patterns in pediatric patients undergoing major cardiac surgery (MCS) versus those undergoing less intensive non-cardiac surgery. Urinary excretion rates of estrogen, progesterone, and androgen metabolites (μg/mmol creatinine/m2 body surface area) were determined in 24-h urine samples before and after surgery using gas chromatography–mass spectrometry in 29 children undergoing scheduled MCS and in 17 control children undergoing conventional non-cardiac surgery. Eight of the MCS patients had Down’s syndrome. There were no significant differences in age, weight, or sex between the groups. Seven patients from the MCS group showed multi-organ dysfunction after surgery. Before surgery, the median concentrations of 17β-estradiol, pregnanediol, 5α-dihydrotestosterone (DHT), and dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) were (control/MCS) 0.1/0.1 (NS), 12.4/11.3 (NS), 4.7/4.4 (NS), and 2.9/1.1 (p = 0.02). Postoperatively, the median delta 17β-estradiol, delta pregnanediol, delta DHT, and delta DHEA were (control/MCS) 0.2/6.4 (p = 0.0002), −3.2/23.4 (p = 0.013), −0.6/3.7 (p = 0.0004), and 0.5/4.2 (p = 0.004). Postoperative changes did not differ according to sex. We conclude that MCS, but not less intensive non-cardiac surgery, induced a distinct postoperative increase in sex steroid levels. These findings suggest that sex steroids have a role in postoperative metabolism following MCS in prepubertal children.  相似文献

Two experiments were conducted to study the efficacy and causes of medium-chain triglycerides (MCT) in sow diet in improving the survival of neonatal pigs. In Experiment 1, beginning on d84 of gestation and continuing through d28 of lactation, 51 sows were fed corn–soybean meal diet mixed with either soybean oil (SO; n=17), coconut oil (CO; n=18), or MCT (n=16) in a proportion of 9 : 1 by weight. The highest improvement in survival of pigs by sows fed MCT (p<0.01) or CO (p<0.05) was observed during the first three days after birth in pigs weighing <1100 g at birth, compared with sows fed SO. Their three-day survival was 98.6, 80.0 and 47.6%, respectively, for MCT, CO and SO groups. In Experiment 2, beginning on d84 of gestation and continuing through farrowing, 24 sows, 8 sows per treatment, were fed diets as in Experiment 1. Liver glycogen content of pigs 4 h after born from sows fed MCT (p<0.10) and CO (p<0.01), and muscle glycogen of pigs from sows fed MCT (p<0.01) and CO (p<0.10) were increased, compared to those of pigs from sows fed SO. Plasma albumin was increased by MCT and CO (p<0.01), relative to SO. The results suggest that MCT or CO in sow diets may enhance the body glycogen stores and maturity of pigs at birth and, hence, their survival, particularly in pigs with low birth weight during the first three days of life.  相似文献

The higher counts or particular groups (Firmicutes/Bacteroidetes) of intestinal microbiota are related to host metabolic reactions, supporting a balance of human ecosystem. We further explored whether intestinal lactobacilli were associated with some principal cellular and metabolic markers of blood in 38 healthy >65-year-old persons. The questionnaire, routine clinical and laboratory data of blood indices as much as the oxidized low-density lipoprotein (ox-LDL) and baseline diene conjugates in low-density lipoprotein (BDC-LDL) of blood sera were explored. The PCR-based intestinal Lactobacillus sp. composition and counts of cultivable lactobacilli (LAB) were tested. The facultative heterofermentative lactobacilli (Lactobacillus casei and Lactobacillus paracasei) were the most frequent (89 and 97%, respectively) species found, while Lactobacillus acidophilus, Lactobacillus plantarum and Lactobacillus reuteri were present in almost half of the elderly persons. The number of species simultaneously colonizing the individuals ranged from 1 to 7 (median 4). In elderly consuming probiotics the LAB counts were significantly higher than in these not consuming (median 7.8, range 4.2–10.8 vs. median 6.3, range 3.3–9.7 log cfu/g; p = 0.005), adjusted (OR = 1.71, CI95 1.04–2.82; p = 0.035) for age and body mass index (BMI). The colonization by L. acidophilus was negatively related (r = ?0.367, p = 0.0275) to L. reuteri, staying significant after adjusting for age, sex and BMI (OR = 0.16, CI95 0.04–0.73; p = 0.018). However, the blood glucose concentration showed a tendency for a negative correlation for colonization with Lactobacillus fermentum (r = ?0.309, p = 0.062) adjusted for BMI (Adj. R2 = 0.181; p = 0.013) but not for age and sex. The higher white blood cells (WBC) count was positively related (r = 0.434, p = 0.007) to presence of Lactobacillus reuteri adjusted for age, sex and BMI (Adj. R2 = 0.193, p = 0.027). The lower values of ox-LDL were predicted by higher counts of cultivable lactobacilli adjusted by sex, age and BMI (r = ?0.389, p = 0.016; Adj. R2 = 0.184 p = 0.029). In conclusion, the pilot study of elderly persons shows that the intestinal lactobacilli are tightly associated with WBC count, blood glucose and content of ox-LDL which all serve as risk markers in pathogenesis of inflammation, metabolic syndrome and cardiovascular disease (CVD).  相似文献

BackgroundDespite universal healthcare in some countries, lower socioeconomic status (SES) has been associated with worse cancer survival. The influence of SES on head and neck cancer (HNC) survival is of immense interest, since SES is associated with the risk and prognostic factors associated with this disease.Patients and methodsNewly diagnosed HNC patients from 2003 to 2010 (n = 2124) were identified at Toronto’s Princess Margaret Cancer Centre. Principal component analysis was used to calculate a composite score using neighbourhood-level SES variables obtained from the 2006 Canada Census. Associations of SES with overall survival were evaluated in HNC subsets and by p16 status (surrogate for human papillomavirus).ResultsSES score was higher for oral cavity (n = 423) and p16-positive oropharyngeal cancer (OPC, n = 404) patients compared with other disease sites. Lower SES was associated with worse survival [HR 1.14 (1.06–1.22), p = 0.0002], larger tumor staging (p < 0.001), current smoking (p < 0.0001), heavier alcohol consumption (p < 0.0001), and greater comorbidity (p < 0.0002), but not with treatment regimen (p > 0.20). After adjusting for age, sex, and stage, the lowest SES quintile was associated with the worst survival only for OPC patients [HR 1.66 (1.09–2.53), n = 832], primarily in the p16-negative subset [HR 1.63 (0.96–2.79)]. The predictive ability of the prognostic models improved when smoking/alcohol was added to the model (c-index 0.71 vs. 0.69), but addition of SES did not (c-index 0.69).ConclusionSES was associated with survival, but this effect was lost after accounting for other factors (age, sex, TNM stage, smoking/alcohol). Lower SES was associated with greater smoking, alcohol consumption, comorbidity, and stage.  相似文献

BackgroundThe selenium (Se) is an essential trace element that has a critical role in synthesis and activity of a number of selenoproteins with protective properties against free radical damage. This study was conducted to detect the serum Se concentration in very low birth weight (VLBW) preterm infants and its association with bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD).Materials and methodsCord blood Se concentration was determined in 54 neonates with gestation age 30 week or less. Another sample was obtained from these infants at day 28 of birth and serum Se levels were measured by atomic absorption spectrophotometer. All neonates were followed for oxygen dependency at 28 day after birth and 36 week postmenstrual age.ResultsThe mean cord blood Se concentration in studied neonates was 64.78 ± 20.73 μg L?1. Serum Se concentration was 60.33 ± 26.62 μg L?1 at age 28-day. No significant correlation was observed for serum Se concentration at birth and at one month after birth (r = ?0.04, p = 0.72). BPD was diagnosed in 25 neonates (46%). The mean serum Se concentration at one month was 57.16 ± 29.68 μg L?1 in patients with BPD (25 cases) and 63.27 ± 23.6 μg L?1 in 29 patients without BPD (p = 0.40).ConclusionIn our study, serum Se concentration at 28 day of birth was lower than cord blood levels in preterm neonates, but we have not found significant difference among patients who had BPD or not with respect to serum Se concentrations at this age.  相似文献

Background: This study aimed to investigate the incidence trends of colorectal cancer by sex and subsite, in East Anglia from 1971 to 2005. Methods: Using data from the Eastern Cancer Registration and Information Centre, we examined the time trends and the effect of age, period of diagnosis and birth cohort on the incidence of colorectal cancer by sex and subsite. Results: Between 1971 and 2005, 23 875 males and 22 651 females were registered with colorectal cancer in East Anglia. During this period, the increase in the incidence trends was higher among males, more recent periods of diagnosis, and proximal colon. Cohort effects were statistically significant in distal and rectal cancers in males (p < 0.001 and p = 0.05, respectively), and in proximal colon in females (p < 0.001). Period effects were statistically significant across all subsites and both sexes (p < 0.001 for all). Conclusions: Period effects were significant across all subsites for both sexes, whereas cohort effects varied in their significance levels depending on subsite and sex. We suggest that the period effect may be due to an increase in the use of colonoscopy for diagnostic or opportunistic screening, and the cohort effect may be due to aetiological differences in CRC between sexes and subsites.  相似文献

Irisin was recently identified as cleavage product of fibronectin type III domain containing 5 (FNDC5) and shown to increase energy expenditure in mice and humans and therefore was discussed as potential treatment option in obesity. However, the regulation of irisin under conditions of severely altered body weight such as anorexia nervosa and obesity remains to be investigated. We analyzed circulating irisin levels over a broad spectrum of body weight in 40 patients with anorexia nervosa (mean body mass index, BMI 12.6 ± 0.7 kg/m2), normal weight controls (22.6 ± 0.9 kg/m2) and obese patients with BMI of 30–40 (36.9 ± 1.2 kg/m2), 40–50 (44.9 ± 1.1 kg/m2) and >50 (70.1 ± 2.7 kg/m2, n = 8/group). Correlation analyses were performed between irisin and different body indices, parameters of body composition and hormones involved in various homeostatic processes. Obese patients showed higher circulating irisin levels compared to normal weight and anorexic patients (p < 0.05) resulting in a correlation of irisin with body weight (r = 0.47, p < 0.01) and BMI (r = 0.50, p < 0.001). Plasma irisin was also positively correlated with fat mass (r = 0.48, p < 0.01), body cell mass (r = 0.45, p < 0.01) and fat free mass (r = 0.40, p < 0.05). Insulin levels were positively correlated with irisin (r = 0.45, p < 0.01), whereas circulating ghrelin, cortisol, thyroid-stimulating hormone or C-reactive protein were not (p > 0.05). These data indicate that circulating irisin is affected under conditions of altered BMI with highest levels in severely obese patients. The increase of irisin under conditions of obesity may indicate a physiological function to improve glucose tolerance which is often impaired in obese subjects.  相似文献

AimsWe conducted a large registry-based study in California to investigate the association of perinatal factors and childhood CNS tumors, with analysis by tumor subtype.MethodsWe linked California cancer and birth registries to obtain information on 3308 cases and 3308 controls matched on age and sex. We examined the association of birth weight, gestational age, birth order, parental ages, maternal conditions during pregnancy, newborn abnormalities and the risk of childhood CNS tumors using conditional logistic regression, with adjustment for potential confounders.ResultsThe odds ratio (OR) per 1000 g increase in birth weight was 1.11 (95% CI: 0.99–1.24) for total childhood CNS tumors, 1.17 (95% CI: 0.97–1.42) for astrocytoma and 1.28 (95% CI: 0.90–1.83) for medulloblastoma. Compared to average-for-gestational age, large-for-gestational age infants were at increased risk of glioma (OR = 1.86, 95% CI: 0.99–3.48), while small-for-gestational age infants were at increased risk of ependimoma (OR = 2.64, 95% CI: 1.10–6.30). Increased risk of childhood CNS tumors was observed for 5-year increase in maternal and paternal ages (OR = 1.06, 95% CI: 1.00–1.12 and 1.05, 95% CI: 1.00–1.10 respectively). Increased risk of astrocytoma was detected for 5-year increase in paternal age (OR = 1.08; 95% CI: 1.00–1.16) and increased risk of glioma for maternal age  35 years old (OR = 1.87; 95% CI: 1.00–3.52). Maternal genital herpes during pregnancy was associated with a pronounced increase in risk of total CNS tumors (OR = 2.74; 95% CI: 1.16–6.51). Other (non-sexually transmitted) infections during pregnancy were associated with decreased risk of total CNS tumors (OR = 0.28, 95% CI: 0.09–0.85). Maternal blood/immune disorders during pregnancy were linked to increased risk of CNS tumors (OR = 2.28, 95% CI: 1.08–4.83) and medulloblastoma (OR = 7.13, 95% CI: 0.82–61.03). Newborn CNS abnormalities were also associated with high risk of childhood CNS tumors (OR = 4.08, 95% CI: 1.13–14.76).ConclusionsOur results suggest that maternal genital herpes, blood and immunological disorders during pregnancy and newborn CNS abnormalities were associated with increased risk of CNS tumors. Maternal infections during pregnancy were associated with decreased risk of CNS tumors. Advanced maternal and paternal ages may be associated with a slightly increased risk of CNS tumors. Factors associated with CNS tumor subtypes varied by subtype, an indicator of different etiology for different subtypes.  相似文献

The objective of the present study was to estimate genetic trends for body weight traits at different ages in Kermani lambs. Data collected from 1993 to 2006 by the Kermani Breeding Station were analyzed. Genetic trends were estimated for birth weight (BW), weaning weight (WW), 6-month weight (6MW), 9-month weight (9MW) and yearling weight (YW). Maximum number of data was 2654 at birth, but only 1124 at yearling. Different appropriate models for investigation of each trait using multivariate analysis were applied. Variance component were estimated using Simplex procedure and breeding values of animals were predicted with Best Linear Unbiased Prediction (BLUP) methodology under multi-trait animal models. Genetic trends of studied traits were estimated by regressing mean of breeding values on birth year. Direct genetic trends were positive and significant for BW (p < 0.05) WW, 6MW, 9MW and YW (p < 0.01) and were 2, 125, 91, 81 and 156 g/year, respectively. Also, maternal trend for BW was positive and highly significant (p < 0.01) and was 3 g/year.  相似文献

The association of socioeconomic status (SES) with a range of lifecourse outcomes is robust, but the causes of these associations are not well understood. Research on the developmental origins of health and disease has led to the hypothesis that early developmental disturbance might permanently affect the lifecourse, accounting for some of the burden of chronic diseases such as coronary heart disease. Here we assessed developmental disturbance using bodily and facial symmetry and examined its association with socioeconomic status (SES) in childhood, and attained status at midlife. Symmetry was measured at ages 83 (facial symmetry) and 87 (bodily symmetry) in a sample of 292 individuals from the Lothian Birth Cohort 1921 (LBC1921). Structural equation models indicated that poorer SES during early development was significantly associated with lower facial symmetry (standardized path coefficient ?.25, p = .03). By contrast, midlife SES was not significantly associated with symmetry. The relationship was stronger in men (?.44, p = .03) than in women (?.12, p = .37), and the effect sizes were significantly different in magnitude (p = .004). These findings suggest that SES in early life (but not later in life) is associated with developmental disturbances. Facial symmetry appears to provide an effective record of early perturbations, whereas bodily symmetry seems relatively imperturbable. As bodily and facial symmetries were sensitive to different influences, they should not be treated as interchangeable. However, markers of childhood disturbance remain many decades later, suggesting that early development may account in part for associations between SES and health through the lifecourse. Future research should clarify which elements of the environment cause these perturbations.  相似文献

Background: Improvements in diagnostic approaches and refinements to treatment protocols have resulted in 5-year survival levels above 70% for children diagnosed with cancer in economically developed parts of the world. For some cancers, including leukaemia and tumours of the central nervous system, age and sex have been identified as important prognostic indicators. Methods: We examined long-term survival, and affects of age and sex, in a population-based case–control study. Children (0–14 years) newly diagnosed with cancer were ascertained between 1991 and 1996 (n = 4433). Follow-up information was obtained from the National Health Service (NHS) Information Centre for Health and Social Care which records all exits from the NHS including deaths. Results: For all cancer diagnoses combined, 5-year survival was 72.7% dropping to 67.9% at 15 years. As expected, survival differed between diagnostic subtypes ranging from 38.1% for intracranial embryonal tumours to 96.2% for Hodgkin lymphoma. Compared to girls, boys diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia were at a higher risk of dying (RR = 1.26, 95% CI 1.03–1.53), whereas boys diagnosed with an intracranial embryonal tumour were at a lower risk of death (RR = 0.63, 95% CI 0.43–0.91). Conclusion: Our initial findings are consistent with previous reports, and highlight the importance of considering differences by age and sex. The completeness and population-based nature of the original case–control study is an important feature which will provide the basis for future more detailed investigations linking disease determinants to outcome.  相似文献

This study reports a method of measuring sheep activity in confinement based on recording movement of sheep during weighing. The aim was to show that an algorithm to analyse continuous weight records could be used to measure activity quickly and efficiently using commercial weighing equipment and that this measurement is related to animal productivity, specifically liveweight. A prototype method required magnetic switches on the weighing crate to record gate positioning and enclosure of the animal, with data analysis subsequent to the completion of weighing. The method reported here does not require additional equipment, instead using a computer program to analyse weights in real-time to record the degree of sheep movement. The result is summarised as the coefficient of variation of the weight over a period of 8–20 s and reported as an activity score. The real-time method had a higher repeatability (P < 0.05) than the prototype method and gave a stronger association with liveweight with heavier lambs and heavier young sheep being less active under confinement at 6 months and 18 months, respectively (P < 0.05).These findings indicate that a simple system could be developed enabling real-time reporting of activity scores during normal weighing.  相似文献

IntroductionObesity is associated with low-grade systemic inflammation which is thought to trigger the development of comorbidities such as type 2 diabetes. The soluble receptor for advanced glycation end products (sRAGE) belongs to the innate immune system and has been linked to obesity, recently. The aim of the present study was to examine whether serum sRAGE concentrations are related to the grade of weight loss and improvement of insulin resistance due to a very low calorie diet (VLCD).Methods22 severe obese subjects (Median Body Mass Index (BMI): 44.5 kg/m2) were included in a dietary intervention study of 6 month, consisting of a very low calorie formula diet phase (VLCD: 800 kcal/d) for 12 weeks and a following 12 week weight maintenance phase. Fasting glucose, fasting insulin, adiponectin, leptin and sRAGE were determined from sera. Insulin sensitivity was estimated by Homeostasis Model Assessment (HOMA) index and leptin-to-adiponectin-ratio (LAR).ResultsMean body weight reduction by VLCD accounted to 21.7 kg with a significant improvement of insulin resistance. At baseline, sRAGE serum levels were significantly inversely related to BMI (rS = −0.642, p = 0.001) and HOMA (rS = −0.419, p = 0.041). Of interest, sRAGE serum levels at baseline were significantly lower in study subjects with greater reduction of BMI (p = 0.017). In addition, a significantly greater HOMA reduction was observed in subjects with lower sRAGE serum levels at baseline (p = 0.006). Finally, correlation analysis revealed, that changes of sRAGE serum levels were significantly correlated to changes of BMI (rS = −0.650, p = 0.022) during intervention.ConclusionAnti-inflammatory sRAGE might be a potential future biomarker to predict weight loss and improvement of insulin resistance by a VLCD whereby lower baseline sRAGE serum levels indicate a better outcome of the dietary intervention.  相似文献
