The settlement of the “Alta Valsesia” during the XIII century by the ethnic group “Walser” coming from the Switzerland region “Vallese”, left clear historical and cultural traces. In the present study we analysed the “Alagna Valsesia” community (Piedmont). The aim of this research is to reconstruct the demographic and the matrimonial structure of this cultural and geographic isolate over three centuries and to evaluate the degree of isolation through the analysis of some biodemographic parameters calculated on the bases of parish registers, from 1618 to 1899 (1503 marriages). Data on the population dynamics highlighted an early depopulation, since 1500, than led in 1800 to a decline to population of about 60%, relating to the well known phenomenon of the leaving of mountainous isolate. The analysis of the marriages shows a low rate of endogamic mating (82%). This rate reach the highest peak 93% between 1650 and 1659, then it decreases to the minimum values 67% in the middle of 1700. The rates of consanguineous and isonymic marriages are around 20% and 4–5% respectively, reaching the maximum values during 1800; with the only exception for the period between 1700 and 1749, when the rates decreases because of a substantial migratory flow. Inbreeding coefficient stressed out — values between 0,4×10–3 and 2,4×10–3, not so different from the ones reported for other Italian mountainous isolates. The analysis of the seasonality of marriages high-lighted a strong concentration of marriages during winter months, particularly in January and February, when works were suspended because of the cold.  相似文献

In this paper, we address the control problem of bifurcations in the Morris–Lecar (ML) neuron model. With the use of a dynamic state-feedback control, two Hopf bifurcation points in the ML neuron model with Type II excitability can be relocated to new desired locations simultaneously. Also, with the proposed control law, the neuronal excitability characteristics can be transformed from Type I excitability to Type II excitability by changing the type of bifurcation, in which the neuron goes from quiescence to periodic spiking from a saddle node on an invariant circle bifurcation to a Hopf bifurcation. Feathers of today's birds are constructed of beta (β)-keratins, structural proteins of the epidermis that are found solely in reptiles and birds. Discoveries of "feathered dinosaurs" continue to stimulate interest in the evolutionary origin of feathers, but few studies have attempted to link the molecular evolution of their major structural proteins (β-keratins) to the appearance of feathers in the fossil record. Using molecular dating methods, we show that before the appearance of Anchiornis (~155 Million years ago (Ma)) the basal β-keratins of birds began diverging from their archosaurian ancestor ~216?Ma. However, the subfamily of feather β-keratins, as found in living birds, did not begin diverging until ~143?Ma. Thus, the pennaceous feathers on Anchiornis, while being constructed of avian β-keratins, most likely did not contain the feather β-keratins found in the feathers of modern birds. Our results demonstrate that the evolutionary origin of feathers does not coincide with the molecular evolution of the feather β-keratins found in modern birds. More likely, during the Late Jurassic, the epidermal structures that appeared on organisms in the lineage leading to birds, including early forms of feathers, were constructed of avian β-keratins other than those found in the feathers of modern birds. Recent biophysical studies of the β-keratins in feathers support the view that the appearance of the subfamily of feather β-keratins altered the biophysical nature of the feather establishing its role in powered flight.  相似文献

The British naturalist Alfred Russel Wallace (1823–1913), who had to leave school aged 14 and never attended university, did extensive fieldwork, first in the Amazon River basin (1848–1852) and then in Southeast Asia (1854–1862). Based on this experience, and after reading the corresponding scientific literature, Wallace postulated that species were not created, but are modified descendants of pre-existing varieties (Sarawak Law paper, 1855). Evolution is brought about by a struggle for existence via natural selection, which results in the adaptation of those individuals in variable populations who survive and reproduce (Ternate essay, 1858). In his monograph Darwinism (1889), and in subsequent publications, Wallace extended the contents of Darwin’s Origin of Species (1859) into the Neo-Darwinian theory of biological evolution, with reference to the work of August Weismann (1834–1914). Wallace also became the (co)-founder of biogeography, biodiversity research, astrobiology and evolutionary anthropology. Moreover, he envisioned what was later called the anthropocene (i.e., the age of human environmental destructiveness). However, since Wallace believed in atheistic spiritualism and mixed up scientific facts and supernatural speculations in some of his writings, he remains a controversial figure in the history of biology.  相似文献

Although the important role of the non-structural (NS1 and NEP) gene of influenza A in virulence of the virus is well established, our knowledge about the extent of variation in the NS gene pool of influenza A viruses in their natural reservoirs in Kazakhstan is incomplete. 17 influenza A viruses of different subtypes were studied in this paper. Seven types of haemagglutinin and five different neuraminidase subtypes in eight combinations were found among the isolated viruses. A comparison of nucleotide sequences of isolated viruses revealed a substantial number of silent mutations, which results in high degree of homology in amino acid sequences. By phylogenetic analysis it was shown that two distinct gene pools, corresponding to both NS allele A with 5 Clades and B, were present at the same time in Kazakhstan. The degree of variation within the alleles was very low. In our study allele A viruses had a maximum of 5% amino acid divergence in Clade while allele B viruses had only 4% amino acid divergence.  相似文献

We developed a tree-ring chronology based on 52 ring-width series from 25 Pinus tabulaeformis trees at Tianlong Mountain (TLM) using the signal-free method. TLM is located in the middle reaches of the Fen River, North China, and is influenced by the East Asian monsoon system. Tree growth was highly correlated (0.789) with the Palmer Drought Severity Index (PDSI) from May to July and indicated a drought-stress growth pattern. Therefore, we developed a robust May-July PDSI reconstruction for 1792–2011 that explained 62.3% of the instrumental variance for 1951–2005. Severe drought years determined by the reconstruction are consistent with conditions reported in historical documents. The TLM PDSI reconstruction was consistent with other tree-ring-based hydroclimate reconstructions in North China; thus, it may accurately represent dry/wet changes that occur over a large area. Cyclical spectral peaks at 2–8 years in the reconstructed PDSI may indicate ENSO activity, as suggested by the positive correlation with the western Pacific sea-surface temperatures (SSTs) and the negative correlation with the eastern Pacific SSTs on the inter-annual scale.  相似文献

Taxonomic composition and variations in density and biomass of the plankton community in the Öregrundsgrepen, a shallow coastal area, were investigated from June 1972 to November 1973. The phytoplankton biomass was large in spring but small during the rest of the year. The spring bloom was dominated by diatoms and dinoflagellates, especially byThalassiosira spp. which were also important during other seasons. Small forms, such asCryptomonas spp.,Rhodomonas spp. and monads, dominated during summer. Blue-green algae were never of any major importance. During the summer, the trophogenic layer exceeded 10 m in thickness. The metazoan fauna was of lower diversity than the plankton flora. The dominating species, the copepodsAcartia bifilosa andEurytemora affinis, constituted on the average 83% of the standing crop. The low salinities, 5–6 S, were regarded as the principal pertinent limiting factor. The metazoan fauna reached large biomass values from July to October. The protozoan fauna (in the case of ciliates), obtained biomass maxima during the spring bloom. It is suggested that the Öregrundsgrepen represents an area of elevated productivity within a region of low overall production, presumably due to local upwelling. From June 1972 to May 1973, the average biomasses were: phytoplankton 0.464 g C m–2, ciliates 0.040 g C m–2, copepod nauplii 0.010 g C m–2, micro-rotifers 0.004 g C m–2, and mesozooplankton (larger than 0.2 mm) 0.312 g C m–2. It is estimated that about than 60% of the phytoplankton production is consumed by the microzooplankton (<0.2 mm).  相似文献

A long-term monitoring of the upper Váh River was carried out in order to evaluate evolution of water quality by means of ciliate taxocoenoses. One sampling station (Lisková) was located upstream of the pulp and paper mill in the town of Ru?omberok, while two stations (Bystrá and Stankovany) were situated downstream of Ru?omberok. Benthic samples were collected three times a year at each station during 2004–2011. This long-term study enabled us to assemble a comprehensive checklist of ciliates recorded in the upper Váh, and to characterize and compare the ciliate communities in the investigated watercourse. The saprobic index and valency analysis of the ciliate communities allowed us to quantify organic input and to evaluate changes in the saprobity of the upper Váh. The saprobic index ranged from 2.45 to 3.66 corresponding to the quality classes II–IV. Further, there was a prevalence of the α- and β-mesosaprobic levels, but during some periods the polysaprobic level increased along with the decrease of the β-mesosaprobic level. Beside the organic pollution, toxic contaminations were also noticed several times in the studied watercourse. This was documented by a significant drop in the species diversity and abundance of ciliates as well as by various morphological malformations and movement disorders of ciliates and other microorganisms. However, the negative effect of toxic and/or organic pollution wore off relatively quickly, indicating a good self-purification capability of the river.  相似文献

The AR-1 layer, corresponding to the Escucha Formation (Lower Cretaceous) in the Santa Maria Mine of Ariño, has supplied rich and well-preserved macrofloral and palynological assemblages showing interesting data about both taphonomic and environmental conditions. This single layer is located in the Oliete Sub-Basin from the Maestrazgo Basin in northeastern Spain, and it represents one of the most outstanding single layer fossil sites in the world. This site shows abundant and diverse fauna containing exquisitely preserved vertebrate and invertebrate fossils (dinosaur bones, turtles, crocodiles, fishes, molluscs and ostracods) and also plant remains of Albian age. The assemblage is especially significant for dinosaur phylogenetic analysis. The sedimentary environment corresponds to a freshwater swamp plain with sporadic marine inputs within a deltaic–estuarine system under subtropical–tropical climate.  相似文献

Lophomonas striata is a multiflagellate parabasalid commensal in the hindgut of the omnivorous cockroaches Blatta orientalis and Periplaneta americana. Its closest relatives were traditionally thought to include similar multiflagellate parabasalids with a single flagellar area that degenerates during mitosis, such as Joenia and Kofoidia. However, molecular phylogenetic analyses have shown that "lophomonads" are not monophyletic. We have determined the SSU rRNA sequence of L. striata and we find that it branches sister to the Trichonymphida with strong support. This is surprising because all other lophomonads sampled to date branch within the Cristamonadida, and the order Trichonymphida (e.g. Trichonympha, Pseudotrichonympha, and Hoplonympha) is both morphologically coherent and monophyletic in SSU rRNA phylogenies. Trichonymphida, unlike the lophomonads, share a bilateral symmetry, in which their multiple flagella occur in two (or sometimes four) regions, and instead of degenerating upon mitosis, half of the flagella are passed to each daughter cell. The single apical flagellar region characteristic of lophomonads is therefore either plesiomorphic or it has arisen multiple times in parabasalids; our phylogenetic analyses and available ultrastructural evidence suggest the latter. Our results also suggest that parabasalid gut symbionts may have been vertically transmitted in cockroaches before the common ancestor of Cryptocercus and termites.  相似文献

The International Association for Plant Biotechnology (IAPB) was founded in 1963 at the first truly international conference on plant tissue culture, which was organized by Philip R. White. White was a devoted internationalist and was strongly committed to global scientific cooperation. He felt that the time had come for the international tissue culture community to organize so that it could meet regularly and provide a forum to its members for the exchange of ideas and information of mutual interest and use. The various activities of the IAPB since its founding—the publication of its newsletter, its journal, and the proceedings of its quadrennial congresses—faithfully document the remarkable advances in plant biotechnology that were made possible by the successful integration of tissue culture and molecular biology. In particular, the congress proceedings serve as time capsules, providing a wealth of information about the best of science and the most prominent scientists of the time. Temporal and spatial patterns of abundance of the flatfish community in the Mondego estuary were investigated from 2003 to 2007, based on monthly beam trawl samples. During the study period there was a severe drought, with consequential reductions in river runoff. A total of eight flatfish species occurred within the estuary, with seasonal specific richness and abundance varying considerably. It was possible to identify three main groups: one composed of species present throughout the study period and in high densities: Platichthys flesus and Solea solea (maximum densities 3.7 and 4.1 Ind 1000 m?2, respectively); a second group of less abundant but regularly present species: Scophthalmus rhombus and Solea senegalensis (maximum densities 0.2 and 0.3 Ind 1000 m?2, respectively); and a third group of occasional species that occurred only during the drought period: Arnoglossus laterna, Buglossidium luteum, Dicologlossa hexophthalma and Pegusa lascaris. Flatfish distribution patterns varied according to the estuarine use guild: marine‐estuarine dependent fish occurred mainly in the upper reaches, while marine stragglers and marine‐estuarine opportunists occurred mostly in the downstream areas. Species with more northern latitudinal affinities were the most affected by the drought, related with a lesser extent of river plumes to the coastal area, resulting in a reduction in half of the abundance levels. However, flatfish species with more southern affinities increased in abundance during the drought, benefiting also from an increase in estuarine water temperature. Early summer salinity and precipitation values were good proxies for estimating abundance levels of P. flesus and S. solea, respectively, emphasizing the importance of hydrodynamics for the recruitment and abundance of these commercially important species.  相似文献
